Inthelate1700s,Viennawasseizedbyenthusiasmfortheclarinet.Mozartfell inlovewiththesoundofthisfashionablenewinstrument,consideringitthe closesttothehumanvoice,especiallyinthehands ofthebrilliantvirtuosoAntonStadler.Hewas movedbyStadlerandclarinetbuilderTheodor Lotz’latestinven�on,thebassetclarinet,to composehisClarinetQuintet,withitsperfect propor�onsandmelodicinven�onmakingitone ofhisbest-lovedpiecestothisday.
