Welcome Travel broadens the mind and opens the heart. Take the ultimate journey via the power of arts through Harrogate Festivals’ line-up of international artists. A Sense of Place 2015’s theme ‘A Sense of Place’ celebrates our long heritage of delivering world-class acts. Explore how music creates identity, and transcends borders. Live La Bella Vita with the Italian Quartet, Quartetto Di Cremona as they present ‘The Italian Journey’. Indulge in Iranian Mahan Esfahani as he takes you on a ride through time from Bach to the neo-classical music of Martinu, as he reclaims the harpsichord to create a new sense of place in the modern age. Music can transcend deep divides, including the Arab-Israel conflict, as the Polyphony Foundation demonstrate. Experience how national identity impacts on music from the perspective of growing up in that land of pilgrims, Nazareth, with our Artist in Residence, pianist, Saleem Ashkar. Closer to home, there’s a chance to celebrate how the son of Tennessee slaves, Thomas Rutling, transcended the legacy of chains, taking his music and soul to Europe – and Harrogate, where he lived for some years. Finally, look out for musicians from the Harrogate Festival Orchestra who will be popping up with free events in and around our beloved spa town. Music is in the air as My Place, Your Place brings performances to you, without the need for grand concert halls.
Artist in Residence The Festival is proud to present Saleem Ashkar as the 2015 Artist in Residence. Born in 1976 in Nazareth, Saleem Ashkar is truly a man of the world. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and in Hanover, before becoming a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Saleem played with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, debuted at the Carnegie Hall, New York, and appeared with the Chicago Symphony and Staatskapelle Berlin, all before he turned 22. Now, the renowned Palestinian-Israeli pianist is in demand all over the world. Saleem will be performing a special programme exploring national identity in music that crosses cultural boundaries, including personal insight from his youth growing up in Nazareth.
Ashkar will continue his exploration of place and identity with the Polyphony Foundation, whose mission is to bring Arab and Israeli communities together. With the belief young talent can create beauty, find common ground and correct inequalities; this is music with an urgent vitality.
A 50 Year Heritage Revel in a month of music, literature, talks and screenings that celebrates our landmark 50th Festival in style. We welcome back some of the biggest names in music including living legend Alfred Brendel. Plus Julian Lloyd Webber returns as Guest Curator to champion our prestigious Young Musicians Series, of which he is an alumnus. Supporting the next generation of musical talent through his Masterclass and presenting young pianist Jenna Sung, Lloyd Webber points us in the direction of the next 50 years. Fast becoming a leading authority for attracting iconic jazz artists, Gregory Porter headlines this year’s Festival, following in the footsteps of previous artists such as Wynton Marsalis and Van Morrison. Continuing to be a Festival that innovates, we present the unique opportunity to see Psycho Live! with the Harrogate Festival Orchestra. Festival favourites, The John Wilson Orchestra, launch the Festival in style and the grand finale is courtesy of the magnificent Flanders Symphony Orchestra. Explore what place means to you through our diverse programme throughout the month of July. Explore the world with our series of pre-concert talks, create your own place to hear music with our live broadcast with Martin James-Bartlett and bring the family to our Children’s Concert introducing great music to a new generation as part of the BBC’s Ten Pieces campaign. This summer, discover your Festival in our world of music, literature, theatre and film.

A Lecture with Alfred Brendel It is an honour to welcome back to Harrogate the world-renowned pianist Alfred Brendel, whose place among the great pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries is assured. In this unique lecture Brendel distils a lifetime of musical knowledge, from how to tackle the extremes of the repertoire to how best to stifle a cough during a recital. “Looking back at sixty years of giving concerts, making records, and writing, I realised that I should put some order into my thoughts and collect concepts, from A to Z. My lecture will try to convey some of a thinking pianist’s concerns: music, composers, instruments and the public, balance, cohesion, and even love and humour.” Alfred Brendel

Adrian Chandler - Violin/Director
Experience a classic afresh. The Four Seasons is one of the most popular pieces of music of all time, beloved by film-makers and a staple at weddings. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was one of the greatest Baroque composers, second perhaps only to Johann Sebastian Bach, who himself was deeply influenced by Vivaldi’s work. Award-winning ensemble and leading exponents of Vivaldi’s music, La Serenissima presents the celebrated Four Seasons using a new edition from manuscripts in the hand of Vivaldi’s father, Giovanni Battista. Plus the medieval violino in tromba marina has been recreated from evidence surviving in the archives of the Ospedale della Pietà (a convent, orphanage and school in Venice where Vivaldi worked during his lifetime) to present several of Vivaldi’s Concertos for this unique instrument. This will be a truly rare, and beautiful, concert experience.
“These are musicians who quite simply love their Vivaldi and their spirit is contagious.” BBC Music Magazine Tickets: £20

Protégé of Daniel Barenboim, Ashkar performs a special programme exploring national identity in music that crosses cultural boundaries. Ashkar started to learn the piano at the age of 6 and found composers such as Chopin to be strange and unfamiliar, however, it was that same cultural difference he found fascinating. Ashkar discovered that music could enable a search for local identity and form a Sense of Place and a sense of self. In this programme Ashkar explores how composers throughout history have used folklore as a way of finding social and national identity. Join our artist in residence in a pre-concert talk to hear his personal insight from his youth growing up in Nazareth. “Ashkar’s is an art that disguises art and his performances are among the finest in the catalogue” Gramaphone Magazine Tickets: £18

Polyphony Foundation with Saleem Ashkar

Piano Quintet No.2, Op.81 Piano Quintet Piano Quintet in G minor, Op.57
The Festival’s Artist in Residence, Saleem Ashkar, continues his exploration of place and identity through music with young musicians from the Polyphony Foundation, who are travelling to Harrogate from their base in Nazareth. The Foundation – established by Saleem and his brother Nabeel Abboud Ashkar - aims to bring Arab and Israeli communities together through music eductation. With on-going tensions between Israel and Gaza, young Arabs and Jews work and play together in this ground-breaking programme. With the belief that young talent can create beauty, help to find common ground and correct inequalities; this is music with heart, soul and an urgent vitality. Performing an eclectic programme including music by Nazarene composer Wisam Gibran, experience the uniting power of music first hand. “The most moving performance of the year for me was the coming together of Jewish and Palestinian Israelis in their teens, at a time of the highest tension in the land they’d just left behind…superb by any standards, thanks to pianist Saleem Ashkar’s peerless lead.” The Arts Desk Tickets: £15

An Evening with
Julian Lloyd Webber
He’s from one of the most influential musical dynasties of our time. This unforgettable night promises a musical journey into the extraordinary life of Julian Lloyd Webber. In Julian’s words: “The show is a celebration of my life as a musician and some of the wonderful artists I was privileged to make music with. The evening is underpinned by live music from my fellow cellist wife, Jiaxin and our pianist, Pam Chowhan, who will play music from Bach and Fauré to Rachmaninov and my father William Lloyd Webber. There are readings, video clips of my live performances - with such legendary musicians as Yehudi Menuhin (with the Royal Philharmonic and filmed in Harrogate!), Joaquin Rodrigo, Dame Cleo Laine, Stephane Grappelli, Nigel Kennedy, Katherine Jenkins and MANY others – I even found one clip with Kenny Everett! There is also a Q&A with the audience - so you have plenty of time to prepare awkward questions! – and further surprises on the night. All in all it’s an interactive ‘fun’ evening which would make a good introduction to classical music for young people.”

Michael Lewin) Homenaje Danza Española No.1 (arr. Michael Lewin) Girl from Ipanema Besame mucho Mas que nada Sonata for solo guitar Op.47
Since he topped the classical music charts in 2011, the Montenegrin guitarist Miloš Karadaglic´ – hailed as ‘the biggest classical-guitar phenomenon since John Williams’ by The Times – has risen to stardom. Born in 1983, Miloš was 8 when Yugoslavia began to break up. At that time he found a dusty guitar with broken strings on top of a wardrobe. When the war ended and the country opened up, Miloš played in Paris, aged thirteen, and ‘finally saw the world in full colour’.
One of today’s strongest advocates of classical guitar for a new generation, Miloš effortlessly combines traditional pieces with pop classics from the 60s and 70s in a dazzling programme that champions the classical guitar in the 21st century. “The guitar itself was the breakout star here – a sleight of hand that makes Karadaglic´ not only a magician, but a serious and accomplished musician.” The Independent Tickets: £22, £20, £18, £15, £12 Boxes: £54, £36

Armonico Consort
Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil “Vespers”, Op.37 Christopher Monks - Conductor Sung in Church Slavonic with translations Attracting five-star reviews from The Times to The Independent, Armonico Consort is one of the UK’s most acclaimed choirs. Following their sell-out performance at Harrogate Festival in 2013, the Consort returns in 2015 to present a performance of Rachmaninov’s deeply moving All-Night Vigil, marking 100 years since it was written. Performed in the enchanting glow of candlelight in the stunning surroundings of St Wilfrid’s Church, be transported to heavenly heights with this spine-tingling performance. The All-Night Vigil is considered to be one of Rachmaninov’s finest achievements, reflecting the deep religious spirit of his countrymen. Set to texts taken from the Russian Orthodox liturgy including several from the canonical hour of Vespers, sung in its original Church Slavonic language. Although not religious himself, Rachmaninov found the music of the Russian Orthodox Church deeply moving and this piece became one of his favourite works, requesting one of its movements to be sung at his funeral. Profoundly stirring, this promises to be a mesmerising evening featuring the extraordinarily sublime music that has made the Vespers so timelessly moving. “The listener can marvel at the singers’ superb breath control and rock steady intonation.” Gramaphone Magazine Tickets: £20

Gerald Finzi was an influential and well regarded British composer who lived in Harrogate from the age of 7. Here, he studied composition with another celebrated British composer – Ernest Farrar. In this illustrated lecture, Ben Crick, conductor of the Harrogate Festival Orchestra, will chart a path that shows how these two men played a significant part in transforming British music - particularly British Song - into a genre with the depth, integrity and sophistication to compare favourably with that long established heavyweight of the song world, the German Lied. Mahan Esfahani Iranian harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani is hailed as the leading champion of his instrument and was the first harpsichordist to be selected as a BBC New Generation Artist (2008 – 2010). Mahan takes us on a journey through time with music by François Couperin and J.S. Bach to the 20th-Century work of ° and Elizabeth Maconchy, exploring how the harpsichord repertoire has Martinu developed to create a new Sense of Place in the modern age. “The solo harpsichord recital is itself a completely modern construct and it is interesting that much of the great music for the harpsichord is written indeed ‘out of place’ and ‘out of time’. Whether by Bach’s eldest son, the mysterious Wilhelm Friedemann, who was writing for the instrument as it was being superseded by the newfangled piano, or by Domenico Scarlatti, writing as an exile living in Iberia for over thirty years. New life was breathed into this great instrument by modern °, who used it to composers, like Martinu express neo-Classicism - itself an aesthetic completely out of place and out of time!” Mahan Esfahani. Join the charismatic Mahan Esfahani in a pre-concert talk and meet a persuasive advocate for the harpsichord.
