On behalf of the Mayor, Council and staff, welcome to Owen Sound! The 20182019 Winter Guide is an excellent resource that provides a snapshot of what makes our City and area a winter destination. Owen Sound is well-known for our exceptional recreational, cultural and leisure activities year-round, and the winter season is no exception. Whether it is crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, skating, fishing or snowmobiling, we have it all right here in our backyard. If your desire for entertainment and activity lies inside, we boast a vibrant Arts, Culture and Music scene or you can head down to the Bayshore for OHL hockey featuring the Owen Sound Attack. If you are visiting, new to our community, or a long-time resident, we trust you will experience and share the warmth and hospitality for which we are known. I encourage you to attend this year’s Festival of Northern Lights, now in its 31st year. The festival is a grand attraction, made possible by countless volunteer hours. When you see the displays of thousands of twinkling lights along the Sydenham River to the harbour and at Harrison Park, you will see why people come from near and far to take part. There is so much to see and experience in Owen Sound. Savour Owen Sound, Chinese New Year Celebration and 1st Friday events downtown. Visit our local farmers’ market, museums and art galleries, or enjoy a night out at one of our many venues for performing arts. I hope that you will visit Owen Sound’s unique downtown stores, dining and accommodations. There is something for everyone.

Winter in Owen Sound brings its own kind of charm - especially if you like the outdoors. Waterfalls become exquisite snow sculptures, trails lead through quiet forests & open fields, while hills beckon anyone with a toboggan. Read on for ideas & places to enjoy the Winter Wonderland in our area.

Outdoor Skating & Hockey - The Scenic City Order of Good Cheer free outdoor rink at Harrison Park is especially pretty during the Festival of Northern Lights (November & December). The H.O.S.E. rule applies on this rink - Hockey Odd, Skating Even, based on the day’s date.

Tobogganing - Harrison Park’s toboggan hill is legendary! The perennial favourite of thrill-seekers, it also has a smaller hill at the bottom. Gentler slopes can be found in Owen Sound at Ryerson Park off 8th Street East, or near Indian Falls off Grey Road 1.

Snowshoeing & Winter Waterfalls - Snowshoes are your ticket to discovering the beauty of our trails, forests & nearby waterfalls when the snow gets deep. Inglis, Jones & Indian Falls surround the city, with hidden gem Weaver’s Creek Falls located in Harrison Park.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides - Glendale Farms in nearby Benallen offers private sleigh rides through the woods. Windsong Horse & Carriage will tour you around Owen Sound during the Festival of Northern Lights, or you can head to their farm for a trail ride in the country.

Snowmobiling - Many routes begin & end in Owen Sound, a sledder’s paradise. There are more than 3,600 KM of trails in the region (District 9) & numerous clubhouses, plus delicious restaurants & rest stops along the way.

Cross-Country Skiing - For 11 KM of skate-skiing, classic skiing, or a refreshing night ski, head to Sawmills Nordic Centre near Hepworth. The Owen Sound Cross-Country Ski Club offers another 10 KM of groomed wilderness at Massie Hills, south-east of Owen Sound.

Ice Fishing - Georgian Bay reaches Owen Sound’s downtown & inner harbour & it makes for great ice fishing when it freezes over (usually in early February). Open water angling on the Sydenham & Pottawatomi rivers will net you rainbow trout.

More to love about festival

Organizers add spectacular 120-foot drive-through tunnel of lights at Harrison Park By FONL Fanatic

Visitors to this season’s Owen Sound Festival of Northern Lights can be literally surrounded by holiday magic. New this year to the seven-week festival, which kicks off Nov. 17, a section of Harrison Park will be transformed into a spectacular drive-through light tunnel. “It’s going to be 120 feet long, 17 to 18 feet high and 22 feet wide and it’s going to have animated lighting with sound. It’s going to be very, very exciting,” says Jamie Walpole, chair of the festival’s board of directors. About 4,000 feet of computercontrolled light strands will be used to illuminate the tunnel. “You will be able to turn your radio to a station in your vehicle and it will play music to match the lights,” Walpole says. The new experience will be called the Infinity Light Tunnel, in honour of Infinity Network Solutions, which is sponsoring and helping to build the immersive display. “We always want to make something bigger and more exciting and this is something we hadn’t done before. This is something that’s truly interactive,” Walpole says. It will be free to drive through the tunnel - although donations to the

festival are always encouraged and appreciated - and people can experience it as many times as they wish. The Festival of Northern Lights features nearly 400 displays and more than 25 kilometres of light strands that illuminate the harbour, banks of the Sydenham River, downtown core and Harrison Park in Owen Sound leading up to and during the holiday season. The non-profit Festival organization also holds several events when the lights are illuminated. They include an opening celebration on Nov. 17, which is to get underway at about 3 p.m. and feature activities in the area of the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market, library and Queen’s Park bandstand. There will be free music, activities, crafts, wagon rides and more. The highlight of the celebration is a fireworks display over the Sydenham River followed by the ceremonial flipping of the switch for the festival. The popular Festival in the Park, also organized by the Festival of Northern Lights, is scheduled for Dec. 8, starting at 11 a.m., at Harrison Park. It will include many activities, like wagon rides to “Santa’s cottage,” face-painting, cookiedecorating, crafts and pony rides. A closing event, called “Until We Light

Again,” is planned for the evening of Jan. 5. It will include various free, familyfriendly activities inside and outside of the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market, such as dance groove, outdoor fun with At Last Adventures, wagon rides and hot chocolate. Walpole says the light tunnel at Harrison Park won’t be the only new element this year. Some new displays will also be installed, including one of the beloved super hero Spider-Man. Walpole says there are ways for people, businesses, organizations and others to get involved in the festival to help keep it successful. Organizers are always looking for sponsors and volunteers, he says. Volunteers can lend a hand with tasks like painting the displays, setting them up or taking them down or by helping at the special events or with security. “This is completely a volunteer-driven event, so anybody who wants to be a part of it is welcome to come and join and it’s pretty rewarding,” he says. More information on the festival, volunteering and sponsoring is available online at www.fonl.ca or by emailing info@fonl.ca or calling 519-376-4440, extension 1225.

Our Cultural Hub Strong local support results in robust arts scene

By Keira McArthur Our dinnertime conversation centred around a choice between living in Auckland or Wellington, New Zealand for the duration of a year-long work visa. The 22-year-old woman (who grew up in Owen Sound) has a new Urban Sustainability degree, had just bought her plane ticket and was in the next stage of planning her year ahead. My welltravelled oldest friend said, “find out which city has the best independent arts publication, and go there.” He’s right. Artists have always known where to find the most interesting places, then make them home. Even the economists are on board with this now, with coined phrases like ‘creative capital’, and ‘cultural creatives’ to explain why investors should look for signs like the one my friend pointed out: if the arts are supported and healthy, then you’re in a good place (where property values are most likely on the rise). Owen Sound has not one, but two regular arts publications. Mosaic is a print version that has been around for decades (greybrucemosaic.ca). Founded by local hero Vi Bland, the magazine was recently taken over by The Ginger Press Publishing House, which runs a

where Owen Sound is the cultural hub. Owen Sound’s community organizations answer by organizing excellent music events like Summerfolk, SweetWater Music Festival, Lupercalia Winter Arts Festival, which in turn connect this place with incredible players and music from the rest of the world. These festivals are ritual sell-outs.

“Must be something in the water”, says a touring musician who’s just moved here. Screenwriter/musician John Brownlow, who splits his time between here and Los Angeles, tells me that our ‘music scene’ reminds him of what happens in the Maritimes, what happened in Seattle. He’s amazed by how many of us are playing live, jamming out new stuff and laying tracks on each other’s recording projects. What John says makes me think about how easy it is here to be connected across every genre, through music.

I look into other Ontario towns this size. Turns out it’s true. Maybe because if you’re a musician you can take your new material out here on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday on any given week to try it out with an audience. That audience is loyal, too - they will support locals first before they support unknown touring artists. It’s also not unusual for a string quartet to show up after lunch at The Frog Ponds Cafe, a summer park or the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, to play. Oh, and there’s also a symphony with 60 regional classical players and a good range of choirs - all presenting full concert seasons. Yes, and all those excellent backyard recording studios....

Two Owen Sound venues have made it their business to provide regular space for live music. Jazzmyns is an intimate restaurant space close to the Roxy Theatre, where pros play every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, year-round. Open mic night there is every Wednesday. Heartwood Hall, upstairs from the main street’s Heartwood Home, is a beautiful 150-seat venue complete with stage, sound system and a full bar. The venue has strong local ties, with events and concerts that range from Joni Night in Canada, to local CD releases, to a regional film festival, to solo shows by david sereda, Coco Love Alcorn or other touring artists based here, new-gen Rrampt events like Celtic and Cider, packed reggae nights with the Human Rights, whose beloved bass player was born up the hill. There’s always more to see and hear than there is time for. Must be something in the water.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Appetizing assortment of dining options in Scenic City By Keira McArthur Writers love good restaurants. To be relevant it’s necessary to be among people, for health it’s important to eat well. When working to a deadline, restaurants, their food and their staff become part of the story. It’s Thursday morning breakfast at the beloved European Bakery. The place is full; I share the room with a mother and daughter, three construction guys, a gaggle of perfectly dressed older women. A man walks around the space to peer at art that Billy Goodkat from Belfast has painted on the walls. These are famous paintings - American Gothic, The Last Supper, Whistler’s Mother - but faces have been replaced by those of the staff. Carla, (also Mona Lisa), brings me a beautiful latte, and the first bite of my comfort breakfast hits the spot. I hear George Michael’s “Father Figure” amid the bustle and hum, and settle in to write. Lunch is at The Bleeding Carrot, where I meet with two visionaries in the local arts scene. It’s full here, too. Couples, friends, folks in for take-out - a nice buzz. I order a “green machine” (spinach, ginger, lime, frozen mango,
