hile the season is far from over, it’s time for me to say goodbye - in print at least. This is the final print edition of the season but golf coverage will, as it has in the past, continue online. If you want to stay on top of regional golf news just go to the website golfbrucegreysimcoe.com and sign up for the e-newsletter. You can also follow us on Facebook, Steve Harron Twitter and Instagram. It has been an exciting season and From the the fun isn’t over yet. In fact, one of the Publisher biggest events of the year is taking place this month. The Senior Ryder Cup Championship is coming to Saugeen Golf Club Sept. 13-14 and this will be the first time in the history of the event that it has been played outside of the Highway 401-QEW corridor (story pg. 8-9). You’ll also find inside this edition club championship results, a tribute to long-time local pro Bill Gallinger who passed away in July and a story on a pro who won $10,000 in a Hole-in-One contest at Legacy Ridge Golf Club. I hope you enjoy the edition! Finally, I would like to thank my advertisers, readers and loyal supporters in the golf community. I don’t think I’ve ever received so much positive feedback on the publication as I have this year. Please know it is greatly appreciated. Enjoy the rest of the season and stay in touch online. harronmarketing@gmail.com The Walkerton Golf & Curling Club would like to recognize and say thank you to both our membership and guests alike for their continued support throughout this past golfing season! We were able to make some improvements this season both on and off the course. We look forward to hopefully seeing everyone again in the 2019 season! Thank you, WGCC Management, Staff and its Board of Directors

on Burrows, at age 81, can still drive the ball between 200 and 230 yards. The 48-year member of Kincardine Golf Club has shot his age or better “five or six times” including this year when he carded an 80. He’s a multiple winner of the Senior and Super Senior club championships and still picks up the occasional prize during the men’s night competitions on Thursdays. Typically, he plays 9 holes with the seniors on Wednesdays, another 9 on men’s night and then 18 holes on Sunday. Born and raised in Kincardine, he moved to Oakville for 20 years before returning to his hometown in 1974. It was after his return to Kincardine that he started playing more golf. Now, at age 81, he still loves the game. “The number one reason for playing is the exercise but I’m always trying to improve. I want the next game to be even better than the last one.” Golf runs in the family as Ron and his wife Barbara have four sons and five grandchildren who play the game.

Fond memories of Bill Gallinger Owen Sound-area pro known as ‘people person’ who was always willing to help

J

im Dinsmore remembers coming off the golf course frustrated with his golf swing and sharing his frustrations with then-pro Bill Gallinger. "I recall walking into the pro shop and complaining about my iron game and he would say ‘Well let’s go outside and take a look at your swing.’ He was always willing to give a quick lesson," Dinsmore Bill Gallinger said. Stories like that and others (see accompanying article) have been coming in since the death of the well-liked and respected golf pro on July 27. He was 75. Bill worked at Owen Sound Golf and Country Club (now known as Legacy Ridge Golf Club) from the mid-70s to 1981 and after that at Chippewa Golf and Country Club (now known as Southampton G & CC) and Sauble G & CC. "He was a real people person who really enjoyed his job," said Dinsmore, a long-time OSGCC/Legacy member. He was also great with junior golfers. And he was a good player as well. Dinsmore recalls going to play with Bill in a Pro-Am at Chinguacousy Country Club (now known as Caledon Country Club) in the mid-1970s and watching Bill shoot 65 and win the event. It was a competitive course record at the time. A life member of the PGA of Canada, he also shot 63 at his par-71 home club in 1986 while playing a non-competitive round with member Jim Burlington.

OUR LEGACY f Legacy Ridge GC had a Golf Path of Fame then the first ‘star’ on that path would be the recently departed Bill Gallinger 1942-2018. Bill was the ‘Pro’ at Legacy {nee Owen Sound Golf and Country Club} from 1963 to 1981. Every present day Legacy member over the age of 55 has a personal ‘Gallinger’ story to tell. These are stories about the comsummate club pro plying his trade in a time before internet shopping, before YouTube video golf instruction, before slo-motion, before telephone tee time reservations, before on-line reservations, “Bill took an interest in before web sites, before dynamic pricing, before me and many other The Golf Channel, before young golfers. And the Golf Town. His was the era of: credit for anything that arrive at the first tee, put your ball in the ‘rack’ and I have achieved in this wait for your turn to play. The club pro was the font game begins with him.” of all golf knowledge. - Long-time OSGCC/Legacy Ridge Hand drawings of golf member Steve Irving swings graced the golf books and golf magazines of that era. Teaching is an important part of his legacy. One of Bill’s students in the early sixties was a 14-year-old Steve Irving. Steve recently added even more shine to his star in our ficticious Golf Path of Fame. Steve came 7th in the 2018 Ontario Seniors Championship and has been our Club Champion in four different decades. A record that will never be equalled. Steve calls Bill Gallinger "The epitomy of the golf pro!" “Bill took an interest in me and many other young golfers." “And the credit for anything that I have achieved in this game begins with him.” When the older members are remembering Bill they are remembering their youth. So memories are naturally of the ‘good old days’ type. The sun always shone. Men’s Night, including prizes and steak dinner, was $7.50. The July 1 tournament had two shotgun starts and a waiting list of entrants. Times change. We get older. However, while Bill’s death is sad, it’s also making us smile a bit. Thanks for the memories, Bill Gallinger!
