Artists’ Co-op an inviting place to visit New location features 45 local artists, cafe and money rail system

T

The old money rail is an attraction in itself; many remember it being in use when McKay’s was a dry goods store.

he Owen Sound Artists’ Co-op, open daily, is an inviting place to shop, lunch and linger in the heart of downtown Owen Sound.

The new, spacious floor plan of the coop allows easy access for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers - plus bus tours and groups.

The not-for-profit, volunteer-based co-op has been a mecca for artists and art lovers for more than two decades. Last year the collective took a huge leap of faith and moved into a much larger space on 2nd Avenue East, in the historic McKay building. It added a cafe, enlarged its gallery space and now offers a community display area for non-profit groups. It will mark its first anniversary there in February, during downtown Owen Sound’s Frisky 1st Friday celebration. “We have kept the old wooden floors that creak just right, and restored the original money rail system. The high tin ceilings give us a great feeling of space,” says co-op president Diane Edwards, an Owen Sound artist who specializes in marquetry.

Visitors and locals are drawn to the uniqueness of the space and the vast array of quality art and crafts by co-op members, including pottery, woodworking, jewelry, glass, textiles and sculpture, along with fine art in many mediums, from painting and collage to photography and printmaking. There is always an artist on call when you visit, which adds to the co-op’s charm. Most of its 45 members are able to speak eloquently about their colleagues’ work. Some have been involved for more than 20 years. Photo by Don Sankey

Amping up the excitement More activities planned for 29th season of Festival of Northern Lights

O

wen Sound will transform on Nov. 19 into a magical, brightly lit Christmas wonderland. This year, the Festival of Northern Lights will kick off on the same day as the annual Kiwanis Owen Sound Santa Claus Parade.

And, as a special treat, festival organizers have been working as feverishly as Santa’s elves to include more events and more fun into the opening day celebration.

“We want to turn this festival into more of a community event,” says Jamie Walpole, chair of the Festival of Northern Lights board of directors. The celebration is set to begin at 3 p.m. with activities at the Owen Sound Farmer’s Market, the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery.

Sandcastle Theatre will perform, while Santa Claus is slated to read holiday stories. There will also be facepainting, crafts and plenty of other activities for families to do.

Lights, which features more than 400 displays and 30 kilometres of lights that stretch along the Sydenham River and into Harrison Park.

The daytime fun is all a lead-up to the exciting flipping of the switch, which is set to take place at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks over the Sydenham River.

Walpole said a new, younger board of directors is now overseeing the festival.

Starting at 5 p.m., there will be musical performances at the Queen’s Park bandstand.

Walpole said nighttime activities include horse-drawn wagon rides around the festival and more music at the Farmer’s Market.

“We are inviting everyone to participate,” he said. “We want to make this an inclusive event for everyone.” This year will mark the 29th season of the Owen Sound Festival of Northern

Once a city-run event, the festival has since 2011, been organized and put on by the non-profit FONL organization with continuing support from the city.

“Everyone is very passionate about it,” he said.

The board has adopted a new, fresh logo for the festival and it will be incorporated into a few new displays.

Walpole is also putting the finishing touches on a new 10-foot-high, threesnowmen display, built by Rob Thomas. It is being programmed so the snowmen appear to be singing Christmas carols. Continued on next page

The board is also planning to hold some community celebrations on a few Saturdays during this year’s festival, which runs until Jan. 8, 2017. One of the organization’s main goals, Walpole said, is to make the festival economically prosperous by attracting more visitors to Owen Sound to take in the lights and enjoy the many other things that the city has to offer.

In recent years, about eight to 10

tour buses of people have travelled to the Scenic City to see the festival. Organizers hope to boost the number of visitors.

Walpole, a father of two daughters, said the Christmas season is often a busy time of year for families, with all the decorating, shopping and entertaining that goes along with the season.

The Festival of Northern Lights remains a popular event, he said,

because it’s a chance for people to take some time to enjoy and celebrate the holidays with friends and family. “It’s a time to slow down and just enjoy the lights, enjoy Owen Sound and enjoy the beauty of this area,” he said. “We really are very fortunate that we have a river flowing through our city as well as Harrison Park that we can decorate for the Christmas season.”

Roxy offers up warm winter nights Full line-up of theatre, music and films at downtown location

W

inter at the Roxy Theatre means theatre, music and film. There are few better places to hunker down during the cold winter months than a warm theatre filled with the sounds of a live performance. In November the Owen Sound Little Theatre presents Irving Berlin’s White Christmas for a three-week run. In the final stretch of 2016 the Roxy will close out the year with: The Stampeders (Nov. 28; Beatlemania (Dec. 2); A Johnny Cash Tribute (Dec. 3); Toronto All Star Big Band (Dec. 4); Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (Dec. 8); Next Generation Leahy (Dec. 9); A True Country Christmas (Dec. 10) and, to ring in the new year, The Beckett Family New Year’s Concert.

By mid-January theatre-goers who venture out are typically hardy folks – a perfect match for the Banff Mountain Film Festival (Jan. 21), where audience members spend the night watching outrageous feats of outdoor adventure. In late January the Roxy moves into pre-production for its February play, Having Hope at Home. Pre-production is when a show gets exclusive use of the theatre to build sets, manage technical needs and rehearse nightly with full lights and sound. Owen Sound Little Theatre’s production of Having Hope at Home runs Feb. 2-11, 2017. A Canadian play by David S. Craig, the story unfolds, rather appropriately, in a drafty farmhouse on

a winter’s night. An expectant young couple has invited the wife’s parents for dinner, but tensions rise when the mother-to-be reveals her plan for a home birth, much to the chagrin of her father, the head of obstetrics at the local hospital. Hilarity ensues. In March, as winter lets up, the Roxy is still going strong with Celtic rockers The Mudmen (March 4), Cinderfella (March 11) and Clockwork Mysteries (March 18). The Scenic City Order of Good Cheer rink at Harrison Park

Bring on Winter! Here are some fun things to do in the great outdoors

I

f you live in a snowbelt, as we do, you may as well embrace it. Owen Sound gets about 9 feet of white stuff in a season, which is great for snowshoeing, tobogganing, skiing (both downhill and cross-country), snowmobiling and good old-fashioned snow angels and snowmen. What if it’s a light winter? We still have skating, fishing, trail rides and our awesome winter waterfalls. Here’s a handy check-list of outdoor winter pursuits:

Tobogganing

The Harrison Park toboggan hill is the perennial favourite for thrill-seekers, and best of all, you can warm up later with a hot drink or poutine at the park restaurant. Gentler slopes can be found in downtown Owen Sound at Ryerson Park off 8th Street East or near Indian Falls off County Road 1.

Outdoor Skating

Harrison Park wins again with its Scenic City Order of Good Cheer rink, which is especially pretty during the Festival of Northern Lights. The HOSE rule applies, meaning Hockey on Odd days, Skating on Even-numbered ones. Free admission. Continued on next page

Winter Fun! Snowshoeing our Winter Waterfalls

A pair of snowshoes is your ticket to discovering the beauty of a waterfall in winter. Inglis Falls, Weaver’s Creek Falls and Jones Falls are wondrous to behold and accessible with snowshoes. Bring along a ski pole or walking stick for good measure. (If you’ve planned a waterfall trip and there isn’t much snow, you can hike to the waterfalls instead).

Trail Rides and Sleigh Rides

Glendale Farms in nearby Benallen offers sleigh rides through the woods! Call 519-376-9027 or visit glendale-farms.com. Windsong Horse & Carriage will tour you around Owen Sound in a horse-drawn carriage during the Festival of Northern Lights, or you can head out to their farm for a trail ride in the country. Call 591-3761518 or visit windsongcarriage.com.

Fishing

Owen Sound bay is great for ice-fishing when it freezes over, usually in early February. Open water angling on the Sydenham and Pottawatomi rivers will net you rainbow trout.

Festive and Frisky Downtown merchants plan Friday evening events

T

he next “1st Friday” celebrations in downtown Owen Sound will be festive and frisky!

December 2nd will mark Festive 1st Friday, in the spirit of the holiday season, and February 3rd will be Frisky 1st Friday, a nod to the winter weather and also Valentine’s Day. More than three dozen downtown merchants stay open late during the 1st Friday celebrations, offering sales, music, special events and some delightful surprises. The event is organized by BoOST (Businesses of Owen Sound Together) in collaboration with the local Downtown Improvement Area. This will mark the second year for both 1st Friday events. “From a shopkeeper’s point of view it is great exposure to what’s available downtown,” says Ruth Parsons, head of a joint 1st Friday planning committee. “It’s also bringing back that old feeling of shopping downtown on a Friday night, which everyone loves.” On Festive 1st Friday there will be carollers in the street, horse-drawn sleigh rides and perhaps some old fashioned roasted chestnuts, she said. Parson’s Foto Source will also be offering souvenir photos.

ANDREW E. DRURY, B.A., LL.B. Barrister & Solicitor

The band “Santa with Muscles” will be appearing at Heartwood Concert Hall and there will be specials in the Heartwood Home store, says owner Joanna Bottrell, also a member of BoOST. Frisky 1st Friday will see the return of a popular burlesque show at Heartwood, she added. Bottrell says the 1st Friday events are “catching on” with people, who often return to stores once they realize the selection and service that is available in downtown Owen Sound. ALWAYS

FOR SO LITTLE

The Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame provides a fascinating glimpse into the city’s rich sporting history.

Did you know, for example, that city native Harry Lumley is considered one of the Toronto Maple Leafs all-time greatest goalies? He was, at age 17, the youngest goaltender to play in the NHL and went on to win a Stanley Cup with Detroit Red Wings in 1950.

Owen Sound native Harry Lumley is among the sports heroes honoured in the city’s Sports Hall of Fame.

He won the Vezina trophy in 1954 for being the best netminder in the league and recorded a total of 71 shut outs during his NHL career.

He is one of the many featured sports heroes in the local Hall of Fame, which is located in the facility that bears his name – the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. The hall of fame was formed in 1981 by the Ramoca Shrine Club and the Knights of Columbus and it underwent a major renovation in 2004.

Ring in the Year of the Rooster Local festivities planned to celebrate the Chinese New Year

I

t’s the Year of the Rooster and the Chinese community in Grey and Bruce counties has something to crow about!

by the Bayview School Choir (singing some songs in Mandarin), cultural presentations and demonstrations by the Golden Tiger Kung Fu club of Owen Sound. It will continue at the gallery and library with crafts and hands-on activities, such as 3-D paper folding, Chinese brush painting, a Chinese name game and chopstick challenge.

January 28 will mark the fifth annual Grey Bruce Chinese New Year Celebration and the event is growing to include new activities, workshops and perhaps even a lion’s dance.

“We’re aiming to get the lion’s dance to Owen Sound, and fundraising activities are planned.” The Chinese New Year is based on a lunar calendar and celebrations traditionally continue for about two weeks, from the first new moon to the full moon, says May Ip, founder of the local event. “We’re aiming to get the lion’s dance to Owen Sound, and fundraising activities are planned,” she said. Ip has held Chinese paper folding workshops, health seminars, a mid-autumn festival at Grey Roots Museum and abacus making workshops to raise money to bring the lion’s dance to the celebration. It typically requires seven performers, who would be coming from Toronto.

Don’t be surprised if you see Chinese cultural activities in Heritage Place Mall as well. “Chinese people love malls,” says Ip. “They are gathering places and cultural centres.” An art auction may also be part of the fundraising plans. The Tom Thomson Art Gallery will present an exhibit, The Year of the Rooster, from Jan. 15-29. (Artwork from the Year of the Monkey in 2016 may also be on display). Artists interested in submitting pieces for the show should email gbchineseheritage@teldyn.com. The Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage & Culture Association – the group behind the Chinese New Year event – has worked hard to build partnerships with supporting groups such as Grey Roots, the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library, the gallery and the City of Owen Sound. The Chinese New Year celebration will begin at Grey Roots with performances

GREG, JOANNA, ROD AND GAVIN BOTTRELL Owners, Heartwood Concert Hall and Heartwood Home

For the Bottrell’s, Owen Sound was once a place you bypassed en route to the cottage … until a real estate brochure changed everything. The move from Toronto to Georgian Bluffs was unplanned, but the family quickly fell in love with the area and its local music scene. After 20 years in the music industry, Greg wanted to build the perfect live music venue. Their next move to Owen Sound brought that dream closer. With a 2nd Avenue East location confirmed, Joanna’s happy accident began. Drawing on a love of auctions and antiques and a background in floral design and photography, Heartwood Home was born. Add a dash of espresso bar and a hairdresser’s chair and the Heartwood vibe is unmistakable—upstairs and down. Between running 2 unique businesses and shuttling the boys to Georgian Bay Nordic practice, the Bottrell’s are never idle but always smiling.
