Designing for informality
In urban design scholarship and practice, it has been pointed out that dealing with informality falls
within the regulatory and policy realms and there is no important role that urban design can play.
However, the studio is based on the assumption that it is possible for urban designers to address
and respond to the needs and circumstances of the multiple actors of informality if an alternative
design approach can be adopted.
Towards this end, the studio has attempted a 3-pronged approach for developing design strategies:
Designing a system: Garbage disposal, collection and its place in the marketplace social and
physical environment
Influencing the functionality of the urban space through physical and systemic changes
Modulating the spatial experience through a design intervention
