Knitting : Architecture

Knitting:Architecture

knitting : architecture :: sewing : engineering The act of sewing is the act of attaching. The act of knitting is the act of creating a fabric, a system of stitches. The core of design is the same, the discipline depends on the scale and materials. Sewing is a kind of engineering, it is the details and how they fit together. Knitting is creating architecture, it is a system made up of smaller pieces connected but different in their pattern and direction.

NEW YORK---PARIS---DETROIT These cities have given me context, but more than that they have been my homes. Each of these places have taught me about how cities grow and thrive. New York, Paris and Detroit have very distinct stereotypes and stimgas about them, but i see their similarities. Each has inspired me and my archtecture.

Materials study: Cast plaster to create a combiniation of fludity and rigity

Creating a buddhist bath House in Chinatown behind and above a preexisting noodle shop required the design to be adaptive, Using the ideas of rigidity and fluidity from the material study, the forms climb upward yet are very geometrical.

The bath house is separated into two arms, divided for men and women as is traditional, yet they are connected by a common pathway between the arms.

NEW YORK/PARIS PROGRAM

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

I saw the path through Central Park as two seperate journeys, where you would have a different experience traveling east to west than you would west to east.

I mapped the views along these paths and the gaps gave me the opportunity to create spaces and use program to enhance those differences. The Cafe and Bodega can only be seen from their specific direction, ensuring that the direction you choose will truly lead to a different destination.

The library was in need of an expansion to hold its new programatic elements such as a cafe and community center. The Alger theater located next to the DPL is also in need of a renovation and combining some of their functions will be benefitial to both. the community element in this poject is strong as the East Warren Buisness Association is very involved in the planning stages.

COMPRESSION + EXPANSION OF SPACE

An urban design component addressed the intersection of E Warren and Outer Drive. My proposed addition to the Jefferson branch of the Detroit Public Library maintains the original building, and adds a multi use community center and gathering space. The project consisted of three main parts: research, a book to display the research and the design of the library to house the book.

Weaving the Site: Creating a YMCA in Mexicantown Weaving requires two strands, the warp and the weft. The site is the warp of the building, the context we are given to work with, creating a structure and grid to build upon. The program becomes the weft, weaving through the warp to create space. The strategy of weaving is born from the rich heritage of textiles in the Mexican culture. The threads themselves hold a meaning similar to text. When woven, these strands create a texture that can be read. A dialogue is created between the user and the building.

Weaving can never be completely closed; a space always exists between the strands. These interstitial spaces enliven the spaces around them. The grid of the site dictates the orientation and layout of the spaces as the weft is woven through the warp. The program of the YMCA can be divided into three categories: social, administration and fitness. The circulation connects the building as people are pulled between programmed spaces and are drawn to the interstitial spaces.

The weave forms the enclosure, reacting to the interior depending on the visibility and opacity the program requires. The materials of the enclosure also change to emphasize the interstitial spaces. Weaving integrates the elements of the site, the program of the YMCA and the culture of Mexican town.

The urban component of this project made use of the form created for the YMCA and repurposing it to create amentites for the city, such as bus stops, bike rental, repair shops and gallery spaces

More recognizable features include Cobo/Joe Louis, Wayne Community ColLege and MGM Casino The Lodge divides our site creating a boundary between the neighborhood and the CBD Our goal is to be conscious of this gap and to develop a cultural center and other amentities to tie together these two communities

A game played by the artists of the surrealist movement, the exquisite corps is a collaborative design drawing where each member makes a contribution, only working from the edge of what the previous had added.

The result is an unanticipated whole, a complete piece made of disparate pieces. The juxtapositions give a richer meaning to the overall form.

LEVEL 2 Focusing on the cultural center itself, the main axis transverses the lodge and cuts through the bookstore to create a connection. The gallery spaces cross the lodge increasing visibilty for both the visitors and drivers below. The theater space anchors the cultural center on the east, completing the connection

LEVEL 3

Being conscious of the gap in Detroit between spaces, cultures and our dreams and realities leads us to ultimately experience this gap, and realize what really connects us.

The commons space connects to the gallery space with leads to the exterior amphitheater

A Socially aware education not only connects students to relevent social issues, but also allows the public to interact with the builders and designers of the future. The inner pocket is a more private space that facilitates interaction between faculty and students

The exterior amphitheater is part of the larger green space that is open to the public. this window wall can be opened in warmer months to create a larger space for lectures and critiques.

The outer pocket is an exterior public space where students and the public intersect. Both the Inner and Outer pocket are unique yet joined spaces.

In the commons, the rainwater collection tank displays data about water collection and consumption. The building serves as both a place to learn and a teaching tool itself.

The dual skin wall serves to bring both light and air into each space. The lower level lecture rooms benefit from the extra light, as do the studios which offer a great view of the city. the whole south facade can maintain a comfortable temeperature with venting

We made use of sustainable elements such as rainwater collection, and a green roof. The dual skin wall on the south facade bring in light, but can be used to either recirculate heat in the winter, or vent excess heat in the summer. The dual skin wall also ties with our raised floor heating and cooling systems. more basic passive ideas such as limiting glazing on the north to minimize heat loss. These strageies along with a few spreadsheets brought us to calculate our design to be LEED Certified platinum.
