PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Fellow Members, November was a month to remember at our club. The Gala gave us moments to cherish, the Harvard Expressions got the party started and the Massachusetts Room became “Club HCB”. The Krocs, Pitches and Opportunes entertained us while we dined in Harvard Hall. The Fab Five (link) shared their journeys and insights from the court, rink and fields of Harvard to the highest ranks of professional sports management. A special thanks to our Membership Experience team aka “The Fun Bunch” for their efforts in planning and executing all our member events in November. The variety of offerings had something for everyone. Most important is thanks to all of you for participating in the fun. The Holiday Season is here, and the fun continues. The Harvard Club of Boston is the place to celebrate and enjoy the festivities of the season with family and friends. Whether attending one of the many member events scheduled between now and Christmas or using the clubhouse as your pre or post gathering place when attending other events, the HCB is your place to be. Harvard University had lots to celebrate the past month, from the naming of Rhodes Scholars to Ivy League or National Championships in several sports. Harvard winter sports are in full swing with Ivy League Conference play commencing in January. Cheer on our Crimson teams in the Club Pub or stop by the clubhouse for a meal before attending a home game. The University has many social, intellectual, and athletic events to enjoy during the winter season. There are discounted ticket prices for HCB members at basketball and hockey games and admission to the Harvard Art Museums is free of charge. A new year gives us a chance to initiate or reinvigorate goals we may have for our lives. At the HCB in the area of health and wellness, we have options to help you achieve your goals. From our virtual fitness classes to our fitness center and squash courts as well as relationships with MIT Draper Recreation, Equinox and a boutique yoga experience at Down Under Yoga, we have ways to assist you to be the best version of yourself. Please contact Valerie Phillips, Athletic Department Manager, at vphillips@harvardclub.com for more information. We are also planning a series of professional development events for members interested in advancing or changing careers. As a reminder, starting in January, HCB monthly statements will be sent electronically. If you have any questions, please contact accounting@harvardclub.com. This change continues the Club’s ongoing sustainability efforts. We continue this work and will have some other improvements in the new year. I hope everyone has had an opportunity to view our new app. It’s easier to use and contains more information about HCB happenings. We are also working on updating our website in the new year. Many thanks to our HCB staff for their efforts to enhance our member communications. This edition of the Bulletin covers December 2023 and gives a glimpse into what is ahead in January. I encourage you to 1
review the Club Chronicle that is issued every Monday for the latest updates about upcoming Club events and information about and around the University. In this season gratitude and appreciation, we give thanks for our HCB staff who strive for excellence in their efforts as they work to provide a wonderful member experience. Thank you for all you do. We are grateful for our friends at Harvard – University Administration, Harvard Alumni Association, Harvard Varsity Club and Harvard Athletics to name a few. Current partnerships have been strengthened and new ones have been established all with the goal of our commitment to One Harvard. We are appreciative for all the entities and affiliates that support and service the Harvard Club of Boston during the year. As 2023 ends and 2024 is upon us, during this season of gatherings, may your days be filled laughter, fun and tears of joy. Let us be grateful for our Harvard Club of Boston community. Saying that we are blessed is an understatement. Let us be thankful for the fellowship of our fellow members. Let us remember those who are no longer with us but live on in our memories. As we embark on the season of appreciation and giving, may we be forever mindful of those who are struggling with life in ways that may or may not be obvious. May we all strive to maintain an attitude of gratitude not only during this season but throughout the new year. Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly at president@harvardclub.com. I wish you and your loved ones all the blessings of the holiday season. Happy whatever you may celebrate and best wishes for a new year filled with good health, happiness and peace of mind. Please remember those who are less fortunate. Safe travels and be well. Peace,
Marcus DeFlorimonte Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston Go Crimson! 2

GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER Dear Valued Members: The holiday season is a special time when we feel truly blessed and honored to be a part of this community. Special thanks to all who contributed to the holiday fund to show appreciation for the staff at the club and all they do for our members. Over the past year, we have seen a growth in our membership. Members who stepped away during Covid continue to return, and new members have embraced our community with open arms. We had a record number of recent graduates make a decision to stay connected to their alumni community by becoming members. Our partnerships with the University and Harvard affiliated groups have never been stronger, so we have been heartened by the fact that nearly all of the Harvard Deans now proudly call themselves members. We also saw an increased number of Harvard-affiliated groups host their special events at our clubhouse this past year. Your welcoming spirit has allowed our Membership Experience Committee to continue to bring in compelling speakers who enjoy the opportunity to talk not just about their professions, but more importantly about their journey and how their experience at Harvard helped to shape them as adults. Governor Maura Healey and Former Governors Charlie Baker, Bill Weld and Deval Patrick are just a few examples of leaders who enthusiastically and exclusively came to your club to tell their stories. We took a lead from another one of our recent speakers - renowned Harvard Business School Professor Amy Edmondson - and are not being afraid of failure by trying out new events and activities with the goal of creating experiences that speak to the interests of our members. From mini golf in Harvard Hall, to virtual writing workshops to bourbon tasting to museum tours to Duck Tour adventures and most recently our Membership Appreciation Gala that brought more than 600
members together, we want to provide you with the experiences that bring us all together in unique and special ways. We realize the importance of fitness and wellness and have expanded our fitness and wellness options to include access for all members to MIT Recreation as well as a new partnership with Down Under Yoga Studios. Looking ahead to 2024, we are committed to investing in our membership. We continue to make critical investments into the clubhouse which include the completion of the major roof replacement project. We will be upgrading our Wi-Fi system to ensure the best work environment for our members. We are working with the City of Boston to expand our outdoor patio space. We have completed a year-long audit of our internal systems and processes and will be rolling out a new member web site this year. We will challenge ourselves to grow our Member Benefits, Reciprocal Network and Golf Society. Earlier this month, we performed an upgrade of the member mobile app which you will hear more about in the coming weeks. This is just one small step towards a full revamp of our member communication platforms. In the coming months, we will continue to let you know about the work we are doing for our members. In the meantime, I encourage and urge you to reach out to me. It is our honor to serve you, and I wish you all a very happy holiday season.
Steven P. Cummings, CCM, CCE General Manager 4
MEMORABLE MEMBER MOMENTS What a November it was! Over the course of one month, our members traveled the world through our ever-expanding Reciprocal network, connected through our global network of membership, enjoyed daily complimentary fare in ClubPub, and took part in nearly 20 events both virtually and in the clubhouse. Highlights from this past month included welcoming more than 500 members for Thanksgiving in Harvard Hall, learning about how we can create a safer and more sustainable world, and an engaging fireside chat with five of the most influential leaders in local professional sports (who also happen to be Harvard alums). Let us also not forget about our amazing Member Appreciation Gala (see photos on the next page) and the many other exclusive and intimate events that bring our members together such as Book Club, Conversations With Dinners, Entrepreneurs’ Roundtable, Author Series, wine tasting and shuttle rides to the Symphony. 5

However, to include all of the muscles of the core there will be some additional strengthening of the hip, glute and/or shoulder musculature. By strengthening all of these muscle groups we help protect the spine and improve posture. This class can accommodate all fitness levels. Equipment needed: mat, dumbbells.
The main focus of this class is to improve balance, coordination and range of motion in various joints throughout the body. There will be some standing drills as well as exercises done on the floor. All fitness levels welcome. Equipment recommended: mat, foam roller, lacrosse/tennis ball.
