THE HOME FOR HARVARD ALUMNI
We hail from all parts of the globe, but we will always come from the same home. The Harvard community is the greatest network in the world, and the Harvard Club of Boston is the one place where you can build or expand your Harvard community, reconnect with classmates, engage in lifelong learning, stay informed of Harvard news, and most importantly have a home that you can call your own. You may no longer be a student, but the Harvard Club of Boston will always be here for you. We are your community. We are your family. We are your home.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Fellow Members, I trust that you and your loved ones are well and hope 2024 is off to a successful start. Here at the HCB, we have begun the year with great events and have many more in concept and planning for the rest of the year. In January we welcomed Courtney B. Vance ’82 at our club along with his co-author Dr. Robin L. Smith for an insightful discussion about their book “The Invisible Ache.” We also had the pleasure of hearing from Susan Goldberg, President of GBH about her experiences in journalism and at National Geographic along with her vision and goals for GBH. We now have recordings of selected events on our website in case you could not join us in person or want to enjoy these events again in the future. In our ongoing efforts to strengthen our collaborations with the University, Boston chapter leaders from the Harvard Alumni Association Shared Interest Groups will meet Club representatives in February. This meeting is a follow up action step as result of the HAA Alumni Leadership Conference held last October. Our goal is to support each other’s work through partnership along with increasing membership in both the Club and the SIGs. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 13th for HAA Global Networking Night. Our partnership with Harvard Athletics continues to provide more opportunities to cheer on the Crimson in February. There are HCB nights for basketball and hockey that will deliver fun fan experiences. We are also having our annual first round Beanpot Viewing Party in the Club Pub on February 5th at 5:00 PM. Please check our app and website for details. The Harvard Alumni Association Nominating Committee has released its slate of candidates for the spring 2024 elections of new members to the Harvard Board of Overseers and elected directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. The HCB has fellow three members that have been nominated as candidates. Scott Mead ’77 and Tim Ritchie MPA ’98 are candidates for Overseer and Madeleine Mejia Ed.M. ’00 is a candidate for elected for the HAA. The voting website will be available from April 1 through 5:00 PM (EDT) on May 14, 2024. Harvard University and the Harvard Club of Boston lost a true friend in Joe O’Donnell ’67, gb ‘71 in January. Joe served in many capacities as an alumni leader for the University, most notably as a member of the Corporation and the Board of Overseers. Joe was a member of the HCB for 47 years and served on the Board of Governors. Joe was known for his dedication to his family, friends, and all things Harvard. We extended our condolences to his loved ones and are thankful for his life with us. With the new year upon us, there are some exciting improvements that are being planned for our clubhouse. A lactation room is being created on our lower level. This is an important amenity for our members and staff who
1
are nursing mothers. The space is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month. Work on upgrading our Wi-Fi system throughout the clubhouse will be completed shortly. This vital improvement will create a consistent experience for both our members and guests. Plans are being finalized to upgrade the Veritas Lounge. The work will be done in phases over the next six months so there is minimal disruption to service. The renovations will include new furniture, lighting etc. This work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer, subject to supply chain issues. Many thanks to General Manager, Steve Cummings and his team for their excellent management of club resources that have allowed to us embark on these projects. Kudos to Glen Ballard, Director of Facilities and his team for the planning and execution of projects that enhance the physical attributes of the clubhouse experience. On January 17th, our HCB Catering Team received well deserved recognition for their work in the wedding hospitality industry. They were awarded a 2024 Wedding Wire Couple’s Choice Award. This award recognizes the top local wedding professionals who demonstrate superiority in quality, service, responsiveness, and professionalism. Congratulations to our team of Jennifer Sepulveda, Hannah Larson, Chelsea King, and Lindsey Deaton. Thank you for the work you do to make the special day for our member couples truly wonderful. It has been a challenging time for our Harvard community, particularly the past month. As we encounter each other going forward, let’s do so with grace and the willingness to listen in order to understand and find common ground. Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. As a member of the greatest alumni network in the world, thank you for filling our Club with a spirit of unity and congeniality, respect, and kindness. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com. Best Regards,
Marcus DeFlorimonte Marcus O. P. DeFlorimonte gb ’95, pmd President, Harvard Club of Boston Go Crimson!
