PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

“Summertime and the living is easy”. As we enter July and August our thoughts turn to vacations, weekend getaways and outdoor activities with “adult beverages”. That said, this Bulletin will be covering the upcoming events of our Club for both July and August. Our Member Experience Team has done an outstanding job of organizing and executing a series of memorable events throughout the past academic year. They have planned a variety of fun events for our members of all ages throughout the summer and are in the planning stages of developing a schedule of social and intellectual activities for the next academic year. Becky Blaeser ’98, Senior Director of Member Experience has added two members to the team - Carolyn Longden, Member Events Director and Jordan Gallen, Membership & Marketing Specialist. You will have the pleasure of meeting them at various events throughout the summer. Below are some notable events that are available for you to enjoy when you are in town this summer.

• July 11 – Cocktail 374 at Felipe’s Taqueria Rooftop

• July 14 – Ivy Summer Soiree

• July 20 – Evita at the Loeb Drama Center

• July 22 - Run to Home Base

• July 23 – Polo at Myopia Hunt Club

aforementioned events and all other activities. Please also note that the Club Pub will close for two weeks starting on Monday, July 3 and reopening on Monday, July 17.

Last week, the Supreme Court issued its decision on Affirmative Action. Like any ruling, this decision will contribute to various thoughts, interpretations and implications of great significance. As a community of educated people committed to Veritas, it is fundamental for all of us consider diverse perspectives. I trust that we can agree that it is essential to wholeheartedly support the education of our future societal leaders in an inclusive and equitable manner that embraces diversity and provides everyone with a sense of belonging. Attached is President Gay’s message to the Harvard community and the letter signed by our Harvard University leaders. For those interested in the discussion, there will be a webinar titled “Implications of the Supreme Court’s Affirmative Action Decision” on Friday, July 21 at 11:00 AM.

At the June Board of Governors meeting, the FY 2024 Budget was ratified. Kudos to Susan Kendall, Vice President and Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee and members of the committee for their oversight of this process. Many thanks to General Manager Steve Cummings and his management team for their due diligence and timely work during the budget preparation. Our new fiscal year begins on September 1.

As our events calendar is being developed for the next fiscal year, we are building the foundation of success by continuing to incorporate both clubhouse and offsite

1

venues along with traditional, contemporary and new programs. Our Crimson Leadership Series will be expanded beyond leaders in government (Governor Charlie Baker in October) to leaders in business, sports and other areas to share their experiences in conversation with our members. We are working to expand opportunities to engage with Harvard leaders throughout the University and leaders for our affiliated schools. The foyer space will be used for regular member gatherings to bring life and fun to our entrance. Many thanks to the Member Experience Committee and the Member Experience Team for all their efforts to ensure that the member experience is the best it can be and more.

A special thanks and appreciation go to our entire culinary and hospitality teams under the direction of Executive Chef, Dean Moore, Food and Beverage Director, Craig Snee and Catering and Functions Director, Jennifer Sepulveda. They support our member events with a wonderful variety of food and beverages that are beautifully presented with great service. Their collective efforts and attention to detail certainly make a difference in the overall member experience.

Run To Home Base is scheduled for Saturday, July 22 this year. Please consider supporting our Harvard Club with a Heart program by donating to RTHB, which raises money and awareness to support Veterans and their families who are impacted by invisible wounds of war, such as PTSD. Every dollar raised will go directly towards the life-saving care provided by Home Base.

As you go about your summer adventures whether locally or afar, please share your experiences through the HCB social media channels. We especially like to see events when members meet up expectedly or unexpectedly. Please also remember to take advantage of the 180 plus reciprocal clubs in our network and our golf society as you travel. If you need clothing for your travels, consider ordering some with our new contemporary logo. I trust you all have plans for rest and relaxation with your loved ones this summer. Please travel safely, stay healthy and have lots of fun.

When members ask me what they can do to assist the club, one thing always comes to mind. Spread the word, talk to fellow alumni about becoming members and invite them to do so. The most important asset of the Harvard Club of Boston is its members. Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com.

Best regards,

Go Crimson!

HARVARD ALUMNI ALLYSHIP SERIES

NYT BEST SELLER "ROUGH SLEEPERS" IN

CONVERSATION WITH TRACY KIDDER, AB ’67, AND JIM O’CONNELL, HMS ’82

JULY 12TH | 12:00PM – 1:00PM |

VIRTUAL EVENT

Join us for an exclusive conversation between Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning writer Tracy Kidder, author of the “Rough Sleepers,” and Dr. Jim O'Connell, HMS '82, a trailblazer in caring for the city’s homeless people.

For 40 years, O’Connell has dedicated his life to working to improve the lives of inhoused individuals by providing compassionate continuity of care. O'Connell is a founding physician of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) and an organizer of its street team, which offers outreach to the hundreds of homeless people who avoid the city’s shelters and live mainly outdoors – often called “rough sleepers,” a term borrowed from England. Today, O’Connell and BHCHP staff continue to make house calls on the unhoused, serving more than 11,000 people annually.

For five years, Kidder shadowed O’Connell and his team, including nocturnal van rides ministering to “rough sleepers”. Kidder’s latest book, “Rough Sleepers: Dr. Jim O’Connell’s Urgent Mission to Bring Healing to Homeless People,” recounts O’Connell’s career shift in 1985 from an impending oncology fellowship at New York City’s prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital to helping create the Program, of which he is president today.

A MOLECULE AWAY FROM MADNESS

JULY 14TH | 8:00AM – 9:00AM | VIRTUAL EVENT

Our brains are the most complex machines known to humankind, but they have an Achilles heel: the very molecules that allow us to exist can also sabotage our minds. Here are gripping accounts of unruly molecules and the diseases that form in their wake.

With an intoxicating blend of history and intrigue, Sara Manning Peskin invites readers to play medical detective, tracing each diagnosis from the patient to an ailing nervous system. Along the way, Peskin entertains with tales of the sometimes outlandish, often criticized, and forever devoted scientists who discovered it all. A Molecule Away from Madness is an unputdownable journey into the deepest mysteries of our brains.

A summer membership to the Harvard Club of Boston’s athletic program is perfect for you – or for one of your kids or grandchildren who are home on summer break. You don’t need to be an Athletic Member to take advantage of this offer.

• If you are not currently an Athletic Member: each person is $100.00 per month, June, July or August or if you sign up for all 3 months in advance, the price is $250. Lockers are not included but daily lockers are available for use.

HARVARD CLUB OF BOSTON VS. ROYAL ENGINEERS UK

Thank you to the 12 HCB players who took the court on Tuesday June 13th against a very fit and strong team from the UK.

The Royal Engineers team made up of all different military ranks spent the week in Boston training and playing against 6 local clubs. The Harvard Club of Boston had the pleasure of hosting the Royals Engineers on Tuesday, June 13th. The UK team started off with a tour of the clubhouse given by Club President Marcus DeFlorimonte.

The evening matches were played on the squash courts followed by a post-match social in ClubPub where we shared some fun work and squash stories. The HCB squad was victorious which led to a discussion that there should be a return match in the UK so that the Engineers might have a chance to redeem their overall loss on the night!
