WHERE CLASSMATES BECOME COLLEAGUES
We hail from all parts of the globe, but we will always come from the same home. The Harvard community is the greatest network in the world, and the Harvard Club of Boston is the one place where you can build or expand your Harvard community, reconnect with classmates, engage in lifelong learning, stay informed of Harvard news, and most importantly have a home that you can call your own.
You may no longer be a student, but the Harvard Club of Boston will always be here for you. We are your community. We are your family. We are your home.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Fellow Members:
I hope you have all enjoyed the summer season with your loved ones. It’s been a rainy summer, but when the sun has shined fun times have been had. Our events schedule has been more relaxed but the events we’ve delivered set new standards for member experiences at HCB. Fun was had at Felipe’s Taqueria, Myopia Polo Club and Tanglewood. We had a rousing Send Off Party for the Class of 2027 and toured Boston in style on a Duck Boat Tour. The highlight of the summer was our Member Appreciation Summer Party at The Envoy. More than 370 members and their guests relished the beautiful weather of the evening at the hottest venue in Boston. It was wonderful to see the breadth and depth of our membership gather together, renew acquaintances and build new friendships. The sense of our alumni community was tangible, and the HCB became a club not a clubhouse.
With the academic year beginning in September, Harvard University returns to a full schedule of activities. Please check this link along with weekly updates in Club Chronicle and the reader boards in the Member Commons for activities of interest on campus. Help welcome the Class of 2027 to a vibrant culture that promotes civic engagement across our community by participating in Harvard’s Global Day of Service on September 1st. Registration closes on Monday, August 28th at 12:00 PM. A very special event is happening at Harvard University on September 29th, the Inauguration of President Claudine Gay. This celebration is one of the best traditions at
Harvard. Please click here for more information. We are extending our great partnership with Harvard Athletics and the Harvard Varsity Club. There will opportunities for HCB members to experience the excellence of Harvard Athletics. Check out the Crimson fall sports schedule. Some notable fall events are listed below.
• Harvard Football celebrates its 150th season this year. Home opener - Saturday, 9/16
• Harvard Football Under the Lights - Friday, 9/22
• Harvard Night at Fenway - Tuesday, 9/26
• Homecoming - Saturday 10/28
• Fab Five of Harvard Athletics - 11/15
• Harvard-Yale Tailgate and Viewing Party - 11/17
I hope you all had an opportunity to read the important club and membership updates I sent on August 17th that reviewed our Club’s activities for FY 2023 and outlined some plans for FY 2024, along with our updated dues structure. Our fall season is packed with a variety of events for all to enjoy. The Dean of New England Meteorologists, Harvey Leonard will join us in September for Conversations With, former Governor Charlie Baker is coming to the HCB on October 19th, and our Member Appreciation Gala will take place on November 4th. We continually strive to provide a member experience that you enjoy and want to share with fellow alumni. For the most up-to-date information, please check the HCB app regularly and review Club Chronicle weekly.
Our HCB Values state that – We live Veritas according to these values. We are:
• Visionary
• Excellent
• Responsible
• Inclusive
• Transformational
• Altruistic
• Sustainable
There are two values which I wish to address.
• Inclusive – We are a community where everyone belongs. We all choose to identify in a way or ways that we are most comfortable with our authentic selves. We do this through race, ethnicity, gender etc. Here at the HCB, we are committed to being reasonably accommodating and inclusive where all feel that they belong. To that end, our restroom facilities on our lower level have now been designated for all genders. In our locker rooms we ask that everyone using those areas be respectful of everyone and maintain modesty as they use and traverse the locker room areas.
• Sustainability – We recognize the need to conserve and contribute to the world around us. We are exploring and executing more ways to address the Club’s impact on climate change. Most of our member communications - Bulletin, Club Chronicle, meeting minutes, Annual Report etc. - are distributed electronically. Monthly billing is moving towards a more electronic delivery. Our dining venues and banquet department are testing the use of iPads for ordering. Going forward, members will receive their birthday certificates electronically. We continue expand our recycling program where feasible.
We continue to be mindful about our impact on the environment and strive to remain resolute in our efforts for improvement.
When members ask me what they can do to assist the club, there are two things that always come to mind. First, we want to see you at our events. We strive to provide exceptional opportunities for you to participate and engage in the life of our club. Second, spread the word, talk to fellow alumni about becoming members and invite them to do so. The most important asset of the Harvard Club of Boston is its members. Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com.

AUTHOR SERIES
RED BISHOP: DR. ROBIN YUAN '74, M'78
SEPTEMBER 7TH | 5:30PM – 7:30PM |
MEMBER WORKSPACE
Red Bishop is regarded as a sweeping historical novel that colorfully tells the life and family story of Bishop Robin Chen, encompassing the entire 20th century, including the Cultural Revolution in China. Dr. Robin Yuan '74, m'78 will speak on the story of his grandfather Robin Chen, the last presiding bishop of the Anglican Church in China. Yuan charts Chen's intricate journey, ranging from his early childhood years and his conversion to Christianity as a schoolboy at an Anglican missionary school to his death under house arrest decades later, showing a more nuanced picture of the Cultural Revolution than the version found in propaganda periodicals of the time disseminating "idyllic pictures of a communal utopia with caring barefoot doctors, smiling farmers, and singing factory workers."
AFTER THE IVORY TOWERS FALL
SEPTEMBER 8TH | 8:00AM – 9:00AM | VIRTUAL EVENT
In After the Ivory Tower Falls, award-winning journalist Will Bunch embarks on a deeply reported journey to the heart of the American Dream. That journey begins in Gambier, Ohio, home to affluent, liberal Kenyon College, a tiny speck of Democratic blue amidst the vast red swath of white, post-industrial, rural midwestern America. Bunch traces the history of college in the U.S., from the landmark GI Bill through the culture wars of the 60’s and 70’s, which found their start on college campuses. We see how resentment of college-educated elites morphed into a rejection of knowledge itself—and how the explosion in student loan debt fueled major social movements like Occupy Wall Street.

QIFLOW EARTH SERIES
In the ancient Five Element Theory of Chinese medicine, there is a short window of time when the vibrant energies of spring/summer transition into the more introspective energies of the fall/winter.
This special transitional period is represented by the Earth Element, which is one of balance, harmony and nourishment.
In this flow, the Qi Gong exercises incorporate the spleen+ stomach energy system, and grounding earth energy in order to help us stay in harmony with nature’s rhythm.
