Message from the

Head of School As I sit down to write this letter and contemplate all that we have experienced at Harvey this year, an overarching theme emerges. Despite the many challenges raised by COVID-19, we managed the effects of the pandemic with a great sense of hope, reassured by the knowledge that our community is resilient and committed to ensuring the best possible experience for our students, regardless of the circumstances. At our core, we understand that we are at our best when we come together as a community to support each other and the values we share. During the last year, everyone at Harvey rallied behind a unifying belief: Together we can. Working to ensure that Harvey’s doors remained open all year for in-person instruction required the commitment of our entire community — families, students, and faculty and staff alike. We were able to foster the crucial connections between teachers and students that enabled our students to continue to thrive even during a pandemic. Through all of the challenges and uncertainty of the past year, Harvey’s mission and values were regularly reinforced. Our relationships and our community are at the heart of everything we do and underpin our approach to education and the overall life of the school. In conjunction with our traditional Founders Day celebration, we introduced a Day of Giving as an innovative addition to our Annual Fund and as a way to support the needs of the school while commemorating Harvey’s rich tradition of transforming lives. For part of the day, alumni, students, and families shared their personal stories of transformation within the Harvey community. The common thread linking these stories was a connection to the special teachers who inspired their students each day. In collaboration with the Board of Trustees, who mounted a generous challenge gift, our community raised more than $420,000 in one day from more than 330 donors, establishing a new tradition to support the Annual Fund and ensuring that Harvey continues transforming lives.

While our dedicated faculty and staff worked tirelessly to make sure that our students gained as much as possible from their Harvey experience, behind the scenes there was also work being done “turning inward” to assess Harvey’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Faculty and staff joined the administration, the Board of Trustees, and key volunteers to participate in laying out our strategic plan, which will become the blueprint for all we want to achieve as a school and as a community in the coming years. We look forward to sharing the findings and plans in the year ahead. Additionally, as a school that prides itself on being warm and welcoming, we could not do this work without continuing to focus on the culture of the Harvey community. Now more than ever it is vital that we reflect and take action to ensure that we are supporting all community members in an environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Through these two lenses, we strive, as always, to create the best possible school for students, faculty, and families. Looking back on this year, I am proud of all that we have accomplished. We have proven once again that the Harvey community can make an impact on individual lives and a difference in the world beyond our campus. Together, we can face challenges and rise to overcome them; create partnerships that endure even when we are apart; assist our students in finding the courage to pursue their passions; and provide the guidance students need to find their own voices and use them for good in the world. This is why we come together to invest in this important work. Thank you for your trust and support during the 2020–21 academic year. We quite literally could not have done it without you. Together we did. With gratitude,

William J. Knauer, Head of School

Message from the

chair of the board As we look eagerly to the 2021–22 school year, I want to pause and reflect on this last year and express my gratitude to you, Harvey’s faculty, staff, families, friends, and fellow board members. You continue to ensure that Harvey remains the special place it is: a place of learning and a place of community. As I look back on the 2020–21 school year — a year that magnified the importance and value of Harvey — what stands out most is our community’s commitment to each other and our school mission. What began as a year of uncertainty, requiring courage and commitment on behalf of everyone, ended positively with on-campus athletic competitions, engaging arts performances, and the well-attended Parent Association (PA) spring celebration. The finale was the inspiring senior commencement and eighth grade moving-up ceremonies. What was always certain was the steadfast support of the entire Harvey family that allowed us to finish the year with a sense of joy, celebration, and a deep appreciation for Harvey — for it is Harvey that brought us together. We have so much to be thankful for: » The doors stayed open and our community of learners thrived. » Harvey teachers and leaders went above and beyond to create a sense of continuity and inspiration for our students. » Parents and alumni, unable to visit campus, enthusiastically joined us for virtual events to stay involved in Harvey life. That exceptional level of participation and appreciation for Harvey was demonstrated by the extraordinary successes of our Annual Fund and our inaugural Day of Giving. Alumni and parents participated in record numbers to ensure that our school remains as fiscally sound as it is unified in our vision to provide growth-oriented, innovative experiences to our students. This level of passion and commitment from the Board, the PA,

2

countless volunteers, teachers, staff, students, parents, alumni, and friends has enabled Harvey to emerge from this year stronger than ever. Although every gift is important to the fulfillment of Harvey’s mission, I want to give special thanks to the growing group of donors within our community who seed our success with their extraordinary generosity. Chair’s Circle members made contributions of $7,500 or greater for the 2020–21 year. These donors provide the foundational financial strength for our fundraising campaigns so that we can continue to fulfill the commitment to provide an enriching, robust educational environment. Thank you for your part in this year’s success. We have come out the other side of an extraordinary year — stronger and more resolute in the support of Harvey’s mission. With thanks and appreciation,

Our Alumni:

Alumni with Heart With the world changing around us at an unprecedented pace, the Harvey family pulled together even more tightly and proved what it means to be part of a community. Our alumni were no exception. They stepped up in more significant ways than ever before to support the school with their time, their talent, and their financial support. Whether it was through our class agent program, sharing a profile, speaking at our inaugural Cavalier Speaker Series, or participating in the Founders Day/Day of Giving celebration, the support of our alumni community could be felt. We would like to recognize our “Alumni with Heart” who are steadfastly there for us in so many ways. The pages of this report include profiles of several of the members of this esteemed group, and we hope that they will motivate and inspire you.

Impact Story

Doniella McKoy ’07 When Doniella (Doni) McKoy joined The Harvey School as a ninth grade boarding student, she hit the ground running. Doni was actively involved as a soccer player, as a basketball player, as a member of the Model U.N. and Student Government; she also started a chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). Both the faculty and student body saw the leadership qualities Doni possessed even back then. She was awarded the Headmaster’s Citizenship Award by the faculty for displaying outstanding qualities of citizenship. Her classmates voted her most likely to make $10 million and to win a Nobel Prize! Given her background, it is not surprising that Doni has stayed deeply connected to Harvey as she has pursued an inspiring — and important — career in healthcare emergency management. Doni is currently the Business Continuity Program Administrator for Health Partners Plans — a nonprofit insurance company in Philadelphia, PA — and also an adjunct instructor at The University of Alaska, Fairbanks campus, teaching Business Continuity, Crisis Management and Risk Analysis. Previously she was the Continuity of Operations (COOP) Planner at New York City Emergency Management, where she managed a portfolio of more than a dozen New York City agencies and offices, communicating the importance of planning to sustain their operations during an emergency. Doni is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, a board member of BCI USA Chapter, and the co-founder of Cultivated Sips LLC. with classmate Ashley Abraham. Her commitment to Harvey is equally as inspiring. Despite her busy schedule, she is committed to being a 2007 class agent and staying connected to her class through outreach and events. This past year, in addition to attending all of our alumni events, Doni sat on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, helping to guide and shape the future direction of the school. Doni is also a committed donor to the Annual Fund and has done everything in her power to get her friends, classmates, and her sister Noelle ’09 to give with the same level of commitment and passion that she has. For all you do, Doni, we salute you and thank you for your continued commitment and support to The Harvey School. You are a true impact donor!

Letter from the

Annual fund chairs Dr. Carter’s founding vision was based on a resolution to send Harvey students “into a future of usefulness and service.” Placing one’s education at the service of others is integral to the Harvey legacy. Our students and our faculty — and indeed, our entire community — are the living embodiment of this concept. We are enriched by the many ways our community embraces that aspiration through generosity, gratitude, and goodwill. And during this unprecedented time when we needed it most, we took good care of one another. As the co-chairs of the Annual Fund, we have been particularly touched by the responsiveness and generosity of our fellow community members this year. With a cadre of dedicated volunteers, we told our Harvey stories, encouraged others to share what matters most to them, and inspired everyone to contribute as much as they could. The stunning result is that not only did we reach our original pre-pandemic goal of $1,000,000, but also we achieved a higher participation level than we’ve historically had, while launching our inaugural Day of Giving, which became the cornerstone of our fundraising for the Annual Fund. When we each do our part, the result is transformative. Each and every gift to Harvey’s Annual Fund has a profound and positive effect on our students, our faculty, and programs, bridging the gap between Harvey’s tuition revenue and the actual cost of running the School. Your gift enables us to meet our most immediate needs, while at the same time affording us the flexibility to act on special opportunities that support our incredibly talented and 8

dedicated faculty, enrich essential programs, and supply vital academic resources. We were overwhelmed but certainly not surprised by the number of gifts we received honoring the Harvey faculty whose dedication to our students was evident through everything they did this year. We are profoundly grateful to our teachers for their care and dedication. Clearly, our success in the Annual Fund was our community’s answer to their devotion and was inspired by their constancy. We are deeply thankful to all of our donors who joined us to support Harvey. Harvey is indeed a special place and stands out because our mission is lived every day and embodied in our whole community by their dedication to the care of one another.

Impact Story

Lara Casano ’95 The Casano family has been part of the Harvey family for more than 25 years, on the board, on the playing field, and in the classroom. When the Alumni Association was looking for a new president in July 2020, it was no surprise that Lara Casano ’95 was the name on the top of the list. Lara has been an active participant in Harvey life as an alumna since she first became a class agent in 2004. She has taken on even more responsibility since her son Cade joined the Class of 2025 in the sixth grade. Despite a busy career on Wall Street, starting her own commercial real-estate advisory firm alongside her sister, and raising her three children, Lara has always been a faithful supporter of Harvey’s mission and has proven herself to be a willing and diligent volunteer on behalf of our community. Although sports were a big part of her Harvey experience, she reflects fondly on the influence of the great teachers she had. “The Harvey community is truly one of a kind and has helped me to cultivate lifelong friendships that I cherish greatly,” said Lara. While Lara credits Harvey for having an impact on who she is today and the reason she was excited to send her children to Harvey, as an active alum and parent volunteer, she has also had a considerable impact on our community. Her contributions ranged from fundraising to using her networking skills to reconnect with fellow alumni to encouraging parents to get involved. She was instrumental in the launch of our inaugural Cavalier Speaker Series, which featured storied NFL agent Greg Barnett ’93, helped us create the alumni messages for the launch of Harvey’s first Day of Giving, and connected the Class of 2021 with fellow alumnus and NBC-TV meteorologist Raphael Miranda, who addressed the graduates at their Alumni Association induction ceremony. With her tenure as Alumni President just getting started and Cade now entering the ninth grade, our community is indeed fortunate that Lara’s legacy continues to positively influence our growth and impact our success in a myriad of ways. We are so grateful for the extraordinary difference you have made, Lara, thank you.

Impact Story

Kathy and Jeremy Treat The Treats arrived at Harvey in 2012 from New York City, looking for a home for the four boys from their blended family. From the beginning, both Kathy and Jeremy got involved to support Harvey’s mission as class parents, as avid supporters on the sidelines of all of their boys athletic endeavors, and ultimately as leadership donors. Despite being very busy with their foundation, Speranza, which is committed to creating a more hope-filled world, including partnering with World Vision to work on gender issues and HIV/AIDS, Kathy joined Harvey’s Board of Trustees in 2016. Kathy has been a dynamic and influential volunteer, stewarding the effort for our campus vision and fundraising on a number of fronts. As a member of the Campus Master Plan and Development Committees, she has offered valuable insights and support as we have mapped out a strategy for achieving a physical plant that is as compelling, engaging, and welcoming as our faculty/staff and program. Through their work, Kathy and Jeremy made a historic leadership gift to the Weil House & Barn Complex that has anchored this important initiative and helped set the stage for its successful completion. Kathy and Jeremy can always be counted on to participate in gatherings to share ideas and to inspire others to make their own commitment to get involved in the stewardship of Harvey’s mission. We could not have progressed this far as a school or as a community as a whole without their thoughtful guidance and generosity. Their impact is felt today and will be felt long into the future. Thank you Kathy and Jeremy — you are an inspiration.

Annual Fund

Leadership Donors The Annual Fund is the philanthropic foundation at Harvey; it fuels our pursuit to fulfill the promises we make to students and their families. It provides the resources that support educational initiatives not covered by tuition alone, enriching every facet of student life — academics, art, athletics, and technology. So much more is made possible for Harvey students and faculty through a robust Annual Fund; our leadership donors hold the keys to our success. With profound thanks, we recognize their generosity and acknowledge the impact they have on the school’s ability to provide experiences that change lives.

Current parents Harvey makes a commitment to its students and their individual development. We ask our families with the expectation that every one of them will commit to participating in the Annual Fund at a level that is appropriate for their family to ensure the quality and depth of a Harvey education and to fulfill our mission to inspire passion and curiosity and create community. The parents of the Class of 2025 raised more than $40,000 to support two small building projects that will maximize the functionality of learning spaces for the entire school as well as for the middle school. An expansive outdoor amphitheatre for instruction and gatherings has already been started. Impact Story

William and Glenda Bland The 2020–21 academic year was particularly difficult for new families joining the Harvey community, as they could not come to campus to feel the sense of community and belonging for which Harvey is known. That, however, did not stop William and Glenda Bland, parents to new seventh grade students Wyatt and William ’25. Despite their busy careers (Glenda is a physical therapist, and William is an educator), they jumped right in and used every opportunity to participate in campus life. They enthusiastically participated in all our new parent offerings, and it was evident that they would be wonderful candidates to help lead the effort to drum up support for the Eighth Grade Class Gift. Together with the extraordinary efforts of the Class of 2025 parents, Glenda and William and the committee raised more than $40,000 to expand outdoor space for the benefit of the entire campus and to renovate and expand much-needed spaces in the Middle School for instructional purposes. Once restrictions were eased, the Blands were there, ready to continue spreading their zest for Harvey and expanding in person the connections they had already made on Zoom. We are so grateful to the Blands for enthusiastically embracing our community and not only participating in fundraising activities but showing up to everything to which they were invited. Although they are new parents, they quickly moved to become connected and did their part to help others to become engaged as well; they truly embody and communicate what it means to be part of a community. Although they are just beginning to make their mark on our community, we know that they can be counted on to contribute to Harvey’s ethos. We are grateful for their efforts thus far and look forward to many years of partnership with them!

Impact Story

James Wood ’41 Harvey’s alumni program would not be nearly what it is without the dedication and commitment of Jim Wood. His passion for Harvey has been apparent since he made his first gifts to support Harvey in the 1970s. His input was instrumental to the Alumni Office as they began to gather information about the school’s history and locate and connect with alumni. Jim was a treasure trove of information and institutional memory about the Hawthorne campus. He spent countless hours recalling memories about beloved faculty and his fellow students, as well as depicting student life on the Hawthorne campus in the years just before the Second World War. Through his care and diligence, he helped find and reconnect students from that storied era as he served as one of the first class agents for the classes of 1938–1945! Throughout the years, Jim has remained an active and generous donor — not only to the Annual Fund but also to the various capital initiatives that have shaped the Harvey campus in Katonah as we know it today — most recently as an inaugural donor to the Jock Burbank Memorial Scholarship Fund. He was instrumental in garnering support from the “Hawthorne boys” for both the endowment and the construction of new athletic facilities in 2010. His advice for current and future Harvey students is “Study hard, play hard.” And he has made good on this motto. Not only does Jim make every effort to attend Harvey events — whether in person or now more recently on Zoom — but also he continues to “work hard” on Harvey’s behalf as a class agent. In addition to becoming a charter member of the Carter Legacy Society and remaining active with the Alumni Association, he has also assisted our community service club by participating in their projects. Jim would say that his commitment to Harvey stems in part from his receiving the Ballard Loyalty prize at commencement in 1941. “I felt it was a GREAT honor then and still do. As a consequence of receiving that prize, I have felt it to be another reason to be Loyal to Harvey!” The impact and influence Jim has had on our community past and present are innumerable! Jim can also look back over the decades of his accomplishments. After nearly 30 years with the Bank of New York, he worked for an investment firm and found time for other activities as well: the Bedford Farmers Club, the Interfaith Food Pantry, Mount Kisco Child Care Center, the boards of trustees for Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College, and various conservation and environmental causes. He has been honored locally for his service as a long-time board member and supporter of many of these organizations. We are also proud to have honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus. He is known throughout the local area for his leadership, philanthropy, and kindness. We are indebted to him not only for all he has done for our local community but also for the profound impact he has had to ensure that our Harvey community endures. Go Neperans!

Impact Story

Philip Bowers ’70 When Philip Bowers ’70 matriculated as a sixth grader at The Harvey Middle School for Boys, it was a very different place than it is today. Harvey back then was perhaps more austere — the boys wore coats and ties; lacrosse sticks were wooden; students competed in the old gym and performed plays in the Study Hall; half of the students boarded; and if students weren’t pulling their weight, they were given demerits, which they’d work off in the kitchen; students took Latin every day and worked with their hands in Mr. Coe’s woodworking class in the Red Barn. Philip eventually found his way “back home” to Harvey in 2006 when he enrolled his eldest son, also named Philip, in the sixth grade. “While the age of technology ushered in sweeping changes, Harvey’s core values and ethos have remained unchanged,” said Philip. Recognizing that the spirit of the faculty who inspired, encouraged, and influenced generations of students before so profoundly — Rosie Baldwin, John McMahon, Mr. Engel, Mr. Dodd — lingers still, Philip became increasingly more involved to ensure that the value of a Harvey education would endure. By the time Philip’s second son, Andrew, joined Harvey in 2008, then Alumni Council President Dan Chapman ’73 had recruited him to join the Alumni Council. In addition, he became a valued member of the Annual Fund volunteer corps reaching out to both fellow alumni and parents to encourage their giving. He became a critical part of building the Harvey we know today. In 2009, he led Harvey’s Capital Campaign, and, under his aegis, Harvey built the Fenstermacher Athletic Center, renovated Carter Hall and the new science labs in the Middle School, and made significant strides to add to and grow the endowment. Although his sons have long since graduated, Philip remains a key member of the Board of Trustees and the Annual Fund team. He serves on the Development Committee and has been instrumental to all our fundraising success with alumni and parents through the Annual Fund — especially through the Day of Giving. To imagine our school without Philip’s dedication and generosity is difficult. He has strengthened our school’s finances, enhanced our facilities, and provided leadership within our alumni community and our entire school community. When we think of “impact” stories, Philip’s is top of mind. We are so grateful for all he has done and continues to do for Harvey. We salute you!

Annual Fund On February 11, 2021, Harvey inaugurated a new tradition that both celebrates Founder’s Day and honors our rich legacy of providing a transformative environment for students to become the best version of themselves. For 24 hours, Harvey families, students, faculty, and alumni connected with each other to maximize the value of their contributions to make a HUGE impact. The Board of Trustees mounted a $200,000 challenge to our community to reach a goal of 105 gifts and $200,000. Our community’s support was overwhelming, raising more than $430,000 from more than 350 donors, ensuring that the Annual Fund continues to support Harvey’s vision and the programs and people that make Harvey extraordinary. Our thanks to all those who made this new tradition a success!

Endowment A school endowment is a pool of funds that is invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution. Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our Investment Committee, our endowment, including the Ronald Duncan Trust, has grown to more than $7 million. The majority of our funds are dedicated to financial aid and faculty professional development and materially impact the lives of our students and faculty. This year we established the Maury A. Leone Scholarship Fund to honor the memory of former trustee Maury Leone. Thus we will be awarding our first scholarship this fall to an incoming ninth grade student. To discuss how your interests can match a need at Harvey, please contact Susie Danziger at sdanziger@harveyschool.org

Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors might receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust. Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcome since they provide flexibility to the school’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed the most. We recognize that many donors, however, have specific interests that they want to encourage and support. Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor might want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support, or a particular program. The donor's attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.

28

Charitable Trusts » Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the school, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member or other beneficiary. The donor might choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of the term, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School. » Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee, who invests the principal and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donor. When the term of the trust expires, the principal is transferred to a donor’s family or other beneficiary at what could be a significant gift and estate tax savings.

Weil House &

Barn Complex Continuing the tradition of the Senior Class Gift, the families of the Class of 2021 have rallied support for this special project. The historic house and barn was once the childhood home of Frank Weil ’44, Trustee Emeritus and Harvey benefactor, making this project of particular significance to Harvey’s history; its restoration and renovation to create a welcome center marks a new era. We offer our thanks to the Class of 2021 as well as alumni and friends, whose combined gifts between July 2020 and June 2021 bring us closer to our goal.

Message from the

Parent Association The Harvey Community truly danced between the raindrops this past year. With the incredible support of the Harvey staff, administration, parents, and all of the generous donors like you, Harvey students continued to grow academically and to be supported emotionally and socially in a safe and a supportive environment. In addition, the Parent Association (PA) was able to raise significant funds to support the programs and curriculum enhancements that make Harvey so special. While so many students and families were struggling with online education, Harvey students were learning and engaged in ways that worked for them. The Harvey School graciously offered the option of everyday, in-person learning, online classes from home — be that in Katonah or Taiwan — or a combination of both. The Harvey administration and faculty made sure that students were still reading thought-provoking novels, exploring eye-opening science topics, and delving into complex mathematical problems, from wherever they were based. Teachers did triple duty teaching, making sure their lessons translated both live and virtually, and then staying late to work online with students overseas. Equally impressive, the School found ways to weave joy into students’ daily lives through food trucks; spirit days; daily exercise; options to hike, play basketball or tennis during free periods; after-school programs this spring in the arts and athletics, and so much more. The year was not perfect. Students dealt 30

with hardships, loss, and major changes in the way they had to learn and conduct themselves. But with thoughtful planning and execution, Harvey students stayed safe, healthy, and connected in a year when connections were so rare. In the meantime, parents sipped coffee and cocktails together online in numerous creative gatherings, led by an enthusiastic PA. We found new ways to enjoy each other’s company through the launch of book clubs, parent hikes, online cooking classes, outdoor ropes courses, visits to apple orchards, virtual author evenings, and more. And, finally, we gathered as a group — in person — for a spring celebration full of hope and happiness! On May 15, we sipped canned wine and sampled bourbon from a tasting bar under a blue sky, as the sun went down. We caught up, played cornhole, ate creatively curated boxed gourmet goodies, and, in the meantime, surpassed our fundraising goal for the evening, raising $70,000. On behalf of the PA, I want to thank all who contributed to Harvey this year through your donations, innovative ideas, support, and participation. This community truly showed up, even though it often felt so much easier just to stay in bed and hide. And somehow, we found mini-rainbows throughout this stormy year, and perhaps even a pot of gold — the safety, growth, and unity of our Harvey Community. With gratitude, Leslie Caney Berni, President, Harvey PA

The 2020–21 school year will go down in the history books as an unprecedented year that required resilience, nimbleness, and fortitude on everyone’s part. The year will also be remembered as one that the Harvey PA went above and beyond to ensure that each faculty and staff member felt cared for and supported every step of the way. Whether it was a handwritten note in September, a pie for Thanksgiving, a cup of coffee and a doughnut in December, or a beautiful bulletin board filled with notes and mementos — we could all feel the love of this steadfast group of dedicated and passionate volunteers. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Impact Story

Liz Jones Liz is the parent of recent grad Syrreal Watson, Class of 2021. An educator herself, Liz teaches fifth grade at Richard J. Bailey Elementary in Greenburgh, N.Y. Liz innately understands the importance of being involved in your child’s education and has never missed a chance to be part of Syrreal’s high school experience. Liz could always be found in the stands or on the sidelines when Syrreal was competing; given his talent, that meant a lot of games! But, Liz didn’t stop there. She has always been quick to jump and offer a hand when help is needed — whether it is calling a prospective parent, participating in a Zoom open house, volunteering her time at Homecoming or, most recently, making phone calls to ensure participation from all of the graduating families in this year’s Senior Class Gift, the important Weil House & Barn Complex. Liz never shrinks from a challenge — no mountain is too high nor asks too much! Although Syrreal is now an alum and, for the moment, Liz doesn’t have a reason to be on campus regularly, we know that she isn’t far away and ready to help when the call comes. Liz, we are honored to have had you as part of our community and are hopeful you will be part of our community again soon!

Parent Association Event

Each year, the Harvey Parent Association magically converts a space on campus to become a gala wonderland to bring our families together and celebrate our community. This year was no different and that celebration, Together at Harvey, was held on a beautiful warm and breezy evening in May under a tent on the Quad. It was the first time the Harvey family had been together in more than 15 months. To say we were grateful to be together would be an understatement. What in the past was our most important fundraising event of the year became an evening of reconnection and friendship. An incredibly optimistic committee, under the leadership of Harvey parent, Juliet Howe, organized a silent auction, a selection of grab ‘n go food and drinks, and some fun yard games to keep us engaged. The evening far exceeded our expectations and will surely remain a highlight of the year. 32

Impact Story

Wendy and Tom McLean Wendy and Tom McLean have made an indelible impression on our community since 2013 when Sarah ’18, the older of their two daughters, joined the Harvey family. Their participation deepened throughout the years when Katie ’21 joined her sister on campus, and it was bittersweet when their eightyear commitment to the Harvey community ended with Katie’s graduation. For the past five years, our entire community enjoyed a creatively planned and fun parent benefit in May through the tireless efforts of many volunteers; but it was Tom and Wendy’s ingenuity that shaped the benefit’s themes and brought it roaring to life, starting with the Centennial Celebration — “An Evening to Remember.” However, Wendy’s creativity was not confined to just the benefit. Harvey has been the beneficiary of her time, talent, and passion in a myriad of ways. Active in the Parent Association from the beginning of her time as a Harvey parent, Wendy served as co-chair of the Arts Booster for six years, as the Treasurer for two years, and as a member of the Senior Parent Committee as well. Additionally, Wendy also served on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, providing insights and guidance as we embark on our next strategic plan. She dedicated herself to supporting the arts at Harvey, celebrating student creativity and encouraging others to do the same. We were thrilled and so grateful that at the end of this year, she organized a thank you gift from the arts parents to present the Development Office with a check for more than $2,000 in support of arts programming. Wendy routinely has shared her passion and creativity to benefit the entire community. However, it was a stroke of good fortune that Wendy also volunteered to bring the concepts of Positive Education to the Harvey community. Two small group sessions with administrators in the summer of 2019 led to a professional development session for our entire faculty in August 2021 on positivity, success, and Character Strengths. She continued through the year, giving presentations on Character Strengths to the Senior Bridge classes, the English department, and the middle schoolers. Her presentations sparked enriching conversations about our mission and how we consciously deliver the tenets to our students and our community as a whole. When we think of going “above and beyond,” we think of the McLeans. They have used their gifts to positively impact our community on so many fronts, from their creativity to their generosity to the numerous initiatives to support Harvey faculty and students. Although Katie is off to her next chapter at NYU, we know that the McLean family will remain a committed part of our family. We salute you all, and thank you so much for being a part of us.

Impact Story

Andrew Jamieson ’09 Andy began his Harvey experience as a seventh grader in 2003. He jumped at the many opportunities Harvey provided to expand his view of the world at home and abroad. As a member of the choir and the early music ensemble, he had the opportunity to travel throughout Italy performing; and as a seventh grader, he began to cultivate his interest in politics and civics, whose study he continued at Wheaton College. Andy also credits Harvey with ensuring that what could have been a devastating year due to a family illness was one of the most life changing, because his teachers and advisors partnered with his family to provide love, support and guidance. Because Andy reports that Harvey taught him how to be a better friend, a fierce advocate for his ethical beliefs, and a lifelong learner, it’s not surprising that Andy remained engaged in the Harvey community on a number of fronts. Just five years after graduating from Harvey, he was a guest chef at the 2014 Benefit, Taste of Harvey, offering his services from his newly formed catering company that he began with his late father. And his support of Harvey has grown from there. He has been an enthusiastic class agent, encouraging his classmates to re-engage with Harvey. He was an exuberant and compelling voice in Harvey’s successful inaugural Day of Giving. He also recently became a member of our Alumni Executive Committee, where he has helped shape some of the alumni programming to ensure that alumni are reminded of the compelling reasons they should get reconnected to Harvey. Although professionally Andrew is dedicated to advancing the development program at Hackley School, that has clearly not prevented Andy from sharing his passion and many gifts to ensure that Harvey continues to thrive and to strive to become even stronger. We are so grateful to Andy for the impact he has made bringing his talents and enthusiasm to bear as he reaches out to his fellow alumni to re-engage them. He is an example of an alumnus who felt he had every benefit available to him as a student and now in return is helping ensure that the Harvey students of today and tomorrow enjoy those benefits and the impact they will have as well. Thank you, Andy!
