WILDFIRES LEAVE PATH OF DESTRUCTION ACROSS CALIFORNIA

On Jan 7, 2025, a devastating fire erupted in the Pacific Palisades, an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. As of Jan. 28, the fire has destroyed over 12,000 structures, displaced roughly 200,000 residents, and claimed the lives of at least 29 people. Once a vibrant community and home to many, much of the Palisades now lies in ruins, leaving its people to rebuild from the ashes

While the Pacific Palisades is famously home to celebrities including Tom Hanks, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Aniston, it is also a community for a large working-class population. In the 1970s, homes in this area cost between $50,000 and $100,000 Conversely, Realtor com reported a median listing price of $4.9 million a 9.5% increase year-over-year Despite its reputation as an enclave for the wealthy, many residents with median incomes have been left with nothing in the wake of the fire

Although there are speculations, the cause of the fire remains unknown, but it is evident that California’s drought conditions and strong Santa Ana winds contributed to its rapid spread and extensive damage Additionally, efforts to contain the fire were exacerbated by a dearth of water available through the Palisades fire hydrants

On Truth Social, President Donald Trump attributed the situation to Governor Newsom’s alleged refusal to “sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water from excess rain and snowmelt from the north to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way.” Although the origin is not concrete, the Palisades fires were only 14% contained over a week after they manifested, likely stemming from the lack of access to water

In the heart of the Pacific Palisades lies a collection of shops and restaurants, most of which have been destroyed, with the exception of the Palisades Village. Created by American billionaire business owner Rick Caruso in 2018, this outdoor mall survived the fires largely unscathed. The shop owners took proactive measures, hiring private tankers to combat the advancing flames and protect their businesses

In the area were also a handful of schools, which no longer stand. The most significant was Palisades Charter High School, which the Los Angeles Times reported that “about 40% of the campus was damaged or destroyed.” Classes are now being held online districtwide while repairs are going on Independent schools were also affected by the fires including the Village School, Seven Arrows Elementary, Corpus Christi, and multiple others.

To gain insight into how life has impacted the average person, The Pulse spoke with Ruby Fox, a junior at Marlborough High School in Los Angeles. The morning the fires entered the area, Ruby recalls, waking up to a “completely black sky filled with smoke ” She said, “I woke up and thought it was the apocalypse ”

She added, “We went to school that day without access to our phones,” noting that her school enforces a Yondr Pouch Policy. “We had no idea how severe the fire was until school ended Many of my friends lost their homes during this time and couldn’t communicate with their parents about the belongings they wanted to save ”

Although the fire containment efforts improved significantly in the weeks following Jan. 7, the Palisades, Hughes, and Eaton fires left Los Angeles grappling with widespread destruction The full extent of the impact is difficult to quantify, as countless individuals and families were affected

The city has truly united in efforts to rebuild On Jan 30, dozens of Los Angelesbased music artists came together to host the FireAid benefit concert According to The New York Times, the event raised over $60 million As awards season unfolds, several LA shows are also focusing on raising awareness and funds for the wildfires, with the 67th annual Grammys contributing more than $7 million

There are additional ways to support those affected besides donating money. Ruby shared with The Pulse, “I learned from the fires that the best way to truly help is through jumping in and assisting with specific tasks. When people experience such a profound disaster, it can be difficult to articulate the things they need, so helping them buy new clothes or food is far more effective than generally offering help ”

To assist those impacted by the fires, The Pulse encourages you to visit the Los Angeles Times for more information and regular updates And if you are able, we also recommend you donate to the California Community Foundation or purchase NBA Lakers memorabilia, as all proceeds will support efforts to help the Los Angeles community recuperate and rebuild.

CUT TO THE

CHASE

Dear Editors,

If you have been to the movies recently and looked at the “Now Playing” section, you have probably noticed that Hollywood is dominated by flamboyantly long films Between “Wicked,” “Gladiator II,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim,” it is extremely rare that one can see a movie under two hours long

Considering a recent report by Time, film studios need to reconsider this decision, as the average human has been proved inferior to the small, aquatic animals we know as fish in one regard: The average human adult attention span is officially eight and a quarter seconds, compared to a goldfish’s nine seconds. If people cannot even maintain steady focus for a minute, then why in the world are some movie studios excessively increasing their run times to nearly three hours?

Vox reports that “the length of the average top 10 movie is up from two hours in 1993 to two hours and 23 minutes in 2023 ” Although some longer movies can be presented as artistic statements, others seem unnecessarily stretched out To take up more time, unnecessary moments riddle the plot, creating lulls and drops in energy Many plots do not have the substance to keep going for that long, and characters are usually not dynamic enough to keep viewers interested.

Let’s take a fairly recent example: Universal Pictures' “Wicked.” Running at two hours and 41 minutes, the movie experience actually takes around three hours when taking advertisements into account

While I greatly enjoyed this film, seeing it took up my entire afternoon In Westchester County, everything is spread out, meaning most movie theaters are nearly a half-hour away from my house.

Adding an hour of driving time to the halfhour of ads meant I spent one and a half hours preparing for the movie experience Once I sat down, I was ready to sleep, but I still had the entire movie to watch

Having spent five hours of my afternoon on the movie experience, I could not do much else that day. Even if the film had been one hour shorter, I would have had significantly more free time.

However, when I left the theater, it was dark outside, and my energy was at an all-time low. Reminiscing on my childhood, I cannot recall many movies with such obnoxious runtimes, leading me to wonder why movies keep getting longer

As numerous sequels have been released recently, longer lengths are even more noticeable Some examples include the 2023 live action “The Little Mermaid,” which was an hour longer than the animated original, and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which added a half-hour of time compared to the previous “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ”

Graphing average movie times throughout the decades, the writer of Birch Tree says, “I found movies in the 1980s had the shortest average runtime of just one hour and 53 minutes, and the 2020s have had the longest average, a full 17 minutes (15%) longer ”

Between “The Breakfast Club” and “Back to the Future,” the 1980s were full of amazing, original films that everyone loves to this day Now, in the 2020s, movies just seem long and repetitive Therefore, ‘80s movies are also more enjoyable than current releases due to shorter runtimes

One of my favorite movies, “Fantastic Mr Fox,” released in 2009, comes in at a perfect 87 minutes Within this time, characters were developed and a full plot took place. In a straightforward manner, there is none of the unnecessary fluff and filler scenes that riddle the screens today.

One cannot help but wonder if studios are truly benefiting from longer movies. Contemplating this generation’s tendency to incessantly scroll on TikTok and binge short episodes of television, it is obvious that, due to cultural normalization, our minds have adapted to digesting information in quicker intervals.

So why are studios so adamant in their actions? Well, as a publicist told Vanity Fair, “A long film isn’t just a long film A long film is money ”

Now, as a society, we must ask ourselves if we will condone solely monetary motives for the production of media

Many health sources warn against yet another negative consequence of long movies: sitting for long periods without stretching or walking around The Mayo Clinic recommends taking “a break from sitting every 30 minutes,” as “research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns” such as “obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and unhealthy cholesterol levels ”

However, in a cinema setting, common etiquette would deem it rude for a viewer to repeatedly get up to go to the bathroom or take a stroll This issue would not be so prevalent if films simply returned to lower running times, as there would be less concern around having to maintain a sitting-standing balance

Between negative health effects and stretched-out plots, the only benefit of long movies is the financial benefits for studios For us viewers, though, these experiences have become redundant and a waste of time

As a society, it is time we return to the golden age of concise cinema in which the majority of movies did not exceed two hours

Sincerely, Daniela

Time is ticking, but movies just keep going Photo taken by Brian Stauffer for Variety.

“LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS” THE PLANTS COME TO LIFE IN THE LASDON THEATER

On Nov. 15 and 16, 2024, The Harvey School Performing Arts Department presented “Little Shop of Horrors ” Directed by Performing Arts Chair Vinny Alexander, the musical production brought energy, horror, romance, and endless style to the Lasdon Theater

Audiences admired Harvey’s portrayal of the rise and fall of floral shop worker Seymour Krelborn as he reveals to the world his revolutionary, awe-inspiring, and hauntingly bloodthirsty sentient Venus flytrap plant, Audrey II. The production also follows Audrey and her struggling love life, Mr. Mushnik with his failing business and constantly changing relationship with Seymour, and many more supporting characters who lit up the stage with their incredible comedic and singing abilities.

The script, music, and lyrics of Harvey’s production were adapted from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s 1982 musical of the same title. The musical, which has played on and off-Broadway and currently plays OffBroadway, was originally based on the 1960 film “The Little Shop of Horrors” directed by Roger Corman and written by Charles Griffith

Mr. Alexander applauds the entire cast and crew for their hard work and support for the approximately 95-minute musical, especially the students’ efforts and talents in acting, singing, and dancing He is extremely grateful for the seniors and upperclassmen for leading the way, “inspiring and supporting a talented group of underclassmen.”

Specifically, seniors Jordan Cole and Gabi Schneider shined as protagonists Seymour and Audrey, respectively. Jordan wonderfully captured Seymour’s innocence, good heart, and also his flawed judgment.

Opposite Jordan’s portrayal of Audrey II’s inventor, Gabi brought such beautiful heart, vulnerability, and moments of captivating singing talent onstage

The incredible performances did not end there, as the supporting cast was nothing short of tremendous Juniors Steve Liu and Logan Kreisberg offered charisma and endless laughs as Mr. Mushnik and Orin Scrivello, or the Dentist. Senior Meaghan Sullivan, sophomore Sophia Thilo, and junior Lena Boyce sang their hearts out as the Urchins, Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronette, doing a brilliant job of leading the audiences through the events on screen with their catchy tunes.

Three more amazing performances came from the actors behind Audrey II: junior Delilah Hickson-Bilotta as the voice, and sophomore Kyler Warner and junior Jacob Harkins as the puppeteers. Delilah gave the production an energetic pulse with her extraordinarily powerful voice behind the monster, giving the puppet an undeniably frightening presence onstage

Kyler was the first puppeteer of the show, initially bringing Audrey II to life with ease and passion Additionally, Mr Alexander was especially impressed with Jacob’s fantastic contributions as the actor behind the two largest plant puppets. Not only did these massive puppets take a lot of strength and practice to effectively learn “how to operate and make the monster come alive,” but Jacob achieved this praiseworthy feat while only having two weeks of rehearsals with access to the puppets.

Similarly, before beginning rehearsals, Mr Alexander believed that the show would be fairly easy to build; in the end, he told The Pulse, “Boy, was I wrong.” Balancing the production’s “comedy, creepiness, puppetry, special effects, four-part harmony” proved to be no walk in the park, but every student and faculty member on and offstage remained determined to complete the challenging yet extremely fun and rewarding production.

Specifically, Mr Alexander wants to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of choreographer Ms. Sarah Olsen and music director Mr. William Norman, who were given directing responsibilities They greatly supported the students in their work and helped to bring the show to life with their dedication. Mr. Daniel Esposito’s work on props and costumes was also a muchappreciated addition to developing the visually memorable atmosphere that Mr Alexander envisioned

THE PULSE | WINTER 2025 ISSUE SKYLINE SECURITY AT RISK: STOWAWAYS, LOOPHOLES, AND FATAL ACCIDENTS

In recent months, two stowaways have bypassed security; one body has been found in a wheel well; and two major plane crashes have occurred Aviation catastrophes have been covering television screens, leading individuals globally and locally to wonder about current sky safety.

Starting Nov 26, 2024 at the nearby John F Kennedy International Airport, Svetlana Dali boarded a Delta plane en route to Paris, bypassing TSA without a boarding pass. CBS News says that “she is a Philadelphia resident… in the U.S. on a green card. The French Ministry of the Interior identified her as a Russian national ”

Aboard a Boeing 767-400ER, Dali jumped back and forth between the plane’s six lavatories throughout the seven-hour flight to Paris, and she was only discovered when a flight attendant became aware of her lengthy trips. The National French Police arrested her in Paris upon arrival. Seeking asylum in Paris, she, along with her lawyer, Michael Schneider, issued a complaint stating that she was poisoned upon arriving in Paris Schneider claims that her treatment in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center “amounted to torture after she was placed in a very cold room where she felt sick and eventually lost consciousness,” says AP News.

Originally, Dali was rejected by the TSA because she didn’t have a boarding pass when she first tried to enter Terminal Four of the airport Just a few minutes later, she made her way through security screening by entering a special lane for airline employees at the same time that a large Air Europa flight crew walked through In a public statement, Delta Air Lines attributed this major security failure to “deviation from standard procedures.” However, a similar event occurred less than a month later

On Dec 24, on a flight from Seattle to Honolulu, 33-year-old Shenaiah Small committed a first-degree criminal trespass by taking advantage of the holiday rush and bypassing security In a statement, Morgan Durrant, a Delta representative, said, “The Delta aircraft was taxiing at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport around 1p.m. on Dec. 24 when the airline determined that someone was on board without a ticket, prompting the plane to return to the gate ”

Similar to the Paris stowaway, an individual boarded the plane with no boarding pass but with a full security screening Small reportedly hid in a restroom before being arrested, and was then held in Washington’s South Correctional Entity Jail.

Also on Dec 24, a dead body was discovered on board a plane Leaving Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, the Boeing 787-10 was en route to Maui.

United Airlines told USA Today that “once it arrived, a body was found in one of the main landing gears ” Two major factors of this incident still remain unclear: how the wheel well was accessed and who the person was.

Regarding this incident, AP News reports, “Hiding in a plane’s wheel well is the most common method used by stowaways in their sought-after journeys. Over 77% of people who have attempted to hitch an illegal ride on an aircraft have died, the Federal Administration said ”

On Dec. 25, 38 out of 67 passengers were met with a fatal end when an Embraer 190AR crashed en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, spoke, “We can say with complete clarity that the plane was shot down by Russia We are not saying that it was done intentionally, but it was done.”

Since then, Aliyev has continued to comment on Russia’s involvement in the crash, and his surprise at the lack of responsibility Moscow has taken. On Dec. 28, Russia’s Vladimir Putin informed Aliyev that his Russian defenses had been engaging with Ukrainian drones near Grozny at the time of the crash The overall implication of the incident suggests that the Azerbaijani plane was mistakenly identified as a drone and subsequently shot down.

Another fatal occurrence happened on Dec 29 when Jeju Air’s Boeing 737-800 crash landed, leading to the deaths of 179 passengers. The only two survivors of this incident were flight attendants at the very rear of the plane.

The Michigan and Ohio State football match, known as "The Game," is one of the most famous and heated rivalries in sports According to history com, it started in the 19th century with a border dispute between Michigan and Ohio called the Toledo War Both states claimed a small area of land known as the Toledo Strip. The conflict ended peacefully when Michigan was given the Upper Peninsula as compensation This tension carried over into the football programs, sparking one of the fiercest rivalries in sports

The rivalry began in 1897 when Michigan and Ohio State played each other. Michigan dominated early on, establishing itself as a top program in college football Under coach Fielding Yost in the early 20th century, Michigan frequently beat Ohio State, adding to the rivalry’s intensity However, by the mid-1900s, Ohio State became a strong contender, making the annual game much more competitive As Sports Illustrated reported, the rivalry became more than just about football; it turned into a battle for pride and bragging rights for both schools and their passionate fan bases.

A key moment in the rivalry came during the "Ten-Year War" from 1969 to 1978 During this period, Michigan’s head coach, Bo Schembechler, and Ohio State’s coach, Woody Hayes, faced each year in a legendary conflict Both coaches were considerable figures in college football, and their connection only added more drama. Schembechler had been an assistant under Hayes at Ohio State before taking over as Michigan's head coach in 1969. According to the College Football Hall of Fame, in that first season, Schembechler's Michigan team shocked the nation by upsetting an undefeated Ohio State team that was ranked No 1 This victory cemented Schembechler’s legacy and made the rivalry even more intense as both teams battled for Big Ten dominance

THE GREATEST RIVALRY OF ALL TIME

While the rivalry has always been important, it has grown even more significant in recent decades "The Game" has often determined the Big Ten champion, and with the creation of the College Football Playoff, the stakes are higher A great example is the 2023 game, where Michigan and Ohio State ranked in the top five nationally. According to ESPN, the game showed that both teams are still among the best in college football, making their rivalry even more intense This annual November matchup has become a must-watch game, drawing national attention far beyond the regional rivalry.

The Michigan-Ohio State face-off has become more than just a football game it is a cultural event Since 1934, Ohio State players who win the game receive gold pants charms, a tradition started by legendary coach Francis Schmidt, who famously said, "They put their pants on one leg at a time, just like everybody else " According to the Ohio State University website, Michigan also has its traditions, including the famous Michigan fight song, "Hail to the Victors," which echoes through Michigan Stadium after a victory. The rivalry is not just between the teams; it also impacts the lives of fans, alumni, and students Families often split between Michigan and Ohio State fans, leading to heated trash talk and competition.

Social media also fuels the rivalry, with fans sharing memes and trash-talking all year The rivalry has become a significant part of college football culture For many fans, the rivalry is more than just about the game it is a key part of their identity According to sports yahoo com, the energy and passion from both schools and their fans make this rivalry stand out.

In the most recent matchup between Ohio State and Michigan on Saturday, Nov 30, Michigan came out on top, winning that game 13 to 10, beating the sixthranked team in the country, Ohio State

After the game ended, a massive fight broke out in the midfield between both teams when Michigan went to plant the flag According to maizenbrew com, Michigan quarterback Davis Warren stated, “We're going to win in your house, and we're going to plant the flag ” Both teams were going at it, throwing punches and tackling each other.

The fight got so extreme that cops stormed the field with pepper spray, leading many players to get sprayed This considerable fight shows that this is not just any regular game for these players and coaches Many would say it is both teams’ “National Championship.” After the game this year, Michigan running back Kalel Mullings stated, “Some people gotta learn how to lose; you can't just start fighting after a game ”

Even as college football changes, with new playoff systems and conference realignments, the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry remains a constant It is a foundation of college football, where pride, tradition, and competition come together to create one of the most exciting and vital events in sports This annual game is more than just a football game; it is a defining moment in college sports and American culture The NCAA states that the rivalry symbolizes the passion and traditions that make college football unique

Whether it's for the Big Ten title or just bragging rights, the rivalry will continue to shape college football for years to come.

BRYCE UNDERWOOD'S DRAMATIC FLIP

Bryce Underwood, a 17-year-old Michigan native and the No. 1 QB in the class of 2025, has committed to the University of Michigan He was originally committed to Louisiana State University (LSU), but he was offered $10 million by Michigan to come and play, which was one of the main reasons that helped him flip from LSU to Michigan

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, donated $3 million to this cause and contributed a lot to gain this No. 1 quarterback. Even Larry Ellison, the CEO of Oracle, who didn’t even go to Michigan, donated money to the school This is because his wife Jolin went there, and he wants Michigan to see success It is reported by Fox Sports that Tom Brady also helped throughout this recruiting process He is providing a lot of guidance, too.

According to 247 Sport, Underwood had 44 touchdowns and three interceptions in 2023 and was Gatorade Michigan player of the year The high school team he played with was Belleville, and Underwood led this team to a 13-1 record and a third-straight appearance in the Michigan D1 championship

Brandon Levine, The Pulse sports editor, thinks it is the right move for Bryce Underwood to win the National Championship However, he believes it is not a great place to develop as a player, since Michigan is not known for producing quarterbacks.

What also contributed to Underwood flipping is that he was from Michigan It's hard to not accept the Michigan offer given all the unbelievable tools that he will have that will contribute to him being successful.

According to Stadium Rant, “By the way, there is no problem with athletes making big money, even college athletes They generate revenue in the tens of billions for their respective institutions, and if the coaches can make millions, the players should too. This has been a long time coming, and it’s absolutely a good thing in general It’s a bad thing in this particular case because it’s a giant waste of money by the Wolverines.”

This means that if a coach can make millions of dollars, then players should make a great amount of money, too. This is controversial, because people think that players so young should not be making so much Others think that it is fair because it will help the university and school.

Underwood was always playing a grade above, given how impressive his talent was It does not usually happen, though, because it is rare to see a young quarterback competing with players with higher skill levels who are older than him Many believe that he has the chance to be one of the top players in college football.

Michigan also found a way to lure Underwood in by asking him which offensive coordinator they should hire. Specifically, Rivals says, “Bryce approves of the hire He had phone conversations with all the candidates and believes Lindsey will help in his development toward the NFL,” a source told Rivals.

This is one of the main reasons why he decided to flip from LSU to Michigan The coach of Michigan has also explained Bryce Underwood's mindset going into the upcoming season. For example, Coach Moore said, “He wants to earn everything.” Moore continued, “He doesn't want to be given anything," as reported by Fox Sports

Bryce Underwood will be an elite player given all his tools. Also, his talent and mental level are off the charts This can make him a possible first round draft pick, as well With the right team and staff, he will definitely have a successful season and career.

Miami has got it all! The first place I recommend you to stay while visiting Miami is South Beach. There are many hotels, but the specific ones that stand out to me are the SLS and Loews Hotel These two hotels are very different styles and fit different family styles The Loews Miami Beach Hotel is a large, family-friendly destination that offers a wide range of amenities and activities for guests of all ages With its spacious rooms, multiple dining options, and a beachfront location, Loews is an excellent choice for families seeking a lively and accommodating environment in Miami.

On the other hand, the SLS South Beach is a boutique hotel known for its stylish and vibrant atmosphere. The hotel exudes a cool, contemporary vibe, making it ideal for those looking for an intimate and trendsetting experience, while also having an amazing location, being either a 10-minute drive or walking distance from many excellent shopping areas and restaurants.

During my recent stay at the SLS, I was very impressed by the design, personalized service, and lively feeling. The rooms were a bit tight but beautifully designed with a modern aesthetic, and the hotel’s pool scene was amazing – a perfect spot to relax and socialize From the dining options to attention to detail, my experience was great.

MY MIAMI

Let's get to the dining part of Miami During our trip to Miami, my family and I decided to dine at the iconic Joe’s Stone Crab, a restaurant that has been a staple of the city’s culinary scene since 1913. It is known for its legendary stone crab claws and tourists alike, making it one of the most popular dining destinations in Miami When we arrived, the restaurant was packed with energy and people. Despite its size, the demand to dine at Joe’s is so high we had to wait 45 minutes for a table. However, the time passed quickly as we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere Once we were seated, it became clear that the wait was well worth it The stone crab claws were fresh, tender, and perfectly paired with their signature mustard sauce.

One of the first things my mom and I did was stop for Cuban coffee and food Cuban food is full of flavor and shows off the culture Some of the most popular dishes are ropa vieja, picadillo, and lechón asado. Cuban coffee, or café cubano, is strong and sweet perfect for a quick boost of energy

Restaurants like Versailles and La Carreta are super popular and highly recommended for their authentic Cuban dishes. We did not get a chance to go to those spots, but we did eat at Havana 1957, and it was great The food was delicious, and the place had a cozy, welcoming vibe that made the experience even better

Miami’s beaches are some of the best that I’ve ever been to We spent time at the one behind the SLS Hotel, and it was amazing The sand was soft and white, and the water was so clear and blue It is a great beach for relaxing during the day, but it also has a fun energy because of the nearby hotels and lounges. Of all the beaches I have visited, this one stood out for its mix of luxury and natural beauty

Another thing we did was visit the Miami Design District, which is a great place for shopping. It is not just regular shopping, though the whole area is filled with unique art and modern buildings, so it feels more like walking through an art exhibit There are highend stores like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as smaller shops with unique designs. My mom and I also found some neat souvenirs, like Cuban coffee sets and guayabera shirts, which will always remind us of the trip

One of the most exciting parts of the trip was going to a Miami Heat game. It helped that they were playing against my lifelong favorite team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the atmosphere in the arena was incredible Everyone was cheering, the music was upbeat, and the crowd was super diverse. It was not just about basketball; it felt like a celebration of Miami’s culture Watching the game made me appreciate how much pride the city has in its sports and community

Miami has so much to offer, and it is easy to see why people love it Whether you’re trying Cuban coffee, relaxing on a beach, shopping in the Design District, or cheering at a Heat game, there is something for everyone.

WHY AUSTRALIA SHOULD BE ON ANY TRAVELER’S BUCKET LIST

Although Australia is isolated geographically, it is a beautiful country that blossoms with its unique culture It is home to a vast variety of animals and terrain, and it has a diverse population of more than 26 million people.

Reaching Australia commonly consists of two consecutive plane flights, and each of those flights ranges from five to 17 hours The majority of the flight’s destinations will be Sydney, one of Australia’s most bustling cities. While the flights can often seem mundane and draining, there are some tips that are commonly suggested in order to brighten one’s flight to Australia

One of the most important things that should be considered in order for a traveler to not experience the full weight of jet lag is sleeping on the plane When you sleep during your flight, if planned accordingly, you will naturally begin to adjust to the new time zone. Not only does it help with the jet lag that most people experience when they land in Australia, but it lets one relax and unwind for a few hours

Once visitors land in Sydney, Australia, they are met with a vibrant city with beautiful architecture and parks. One of the first iconic landmarks they will see is the stunning Sydney Opera House Right beside it stands the colossal Sydney Harbor Bridge, which according to Britannica, was constructed and opened to the public in 1932, connecting the northern and southern shores of Sydney This architectural masterpiece promoted a new identity for Sydney, for it encouraged both tourism and travel.

In addition, there also is a booming Asian population in Sydney, and with them comes delicious Asian cuisine as well as their vibrant culture. If there is one meal that doesn’t disappoint in Sydney, other than fish and chips, of course, it would most certainly be anything Asian

Sydney is home to a variety of shopping centers and cool shops. Its biggest shopping mall is Westfield Sydney, but Warringah Mall is also home to plenty of interesting stores and businesses Apart from the swarming shopping malls, in Darlinghurst there is a plethora of unique stores that have an inventory ranging from classic Sydney chachkas to awe-inspiring antique pieces

Sydney also has a great deal of secondhand stores that are open frequently and incorporate not only worldwide famous brands but also have some unique Australian brands as well

When it comes to nature and wildlife, Australia does not disappoint It harbors a unique and delicate ecosystem that is protected and preserved by the Australian government. From its boxing kangaroos and stunning birds, Australian wildlife is truly fascinating. Most travelers tend to fret over the more dangerous creatures, and while there is no doubt that Australia has its fair share of harmful specimens, it is important to also enjoy the more “friendly” creatures that call Australia their home

However, there are important rules that many Australians incorporate into their lifestyle in order to keep themselves safe, and any traveler should take into consideration these methods. Snakes and spiders are fairly common in Sydney, Australia Spiders, more specifically, are considered to be more likely to be encountered by travelers and the general common-folk. Spiders, especially species such as the Huntsman, which make their homes in houses, are sighted frequently

While they aren’t usually harmful toward humans, given the fact that they are not known to be aggressive, it can still be a fright to see a spider bigger than the size of your palm in your home. Unlike the Funnel-Web, which is far more dangerous yet do not seek out humans, Huntsman spiders still can be pests It is best to trap them and release them outside safely

Australia, with its stunning geography, unique wildlife, and lovely community made up of cultures from all over the world is undeniably one of the most underrated tourist destinations Next time you are planning a trip to a place that evokes both spirit and joyfulness, consider Australia as your destination.

THE GOLDEN MOVIES OF 2024: WHICH FILMS DEFIED GRAVITY?

As the ball dropped on Jan 1, 2024, Hollywood had big shoes to fill after a legendary year of film in 2023. With pop culture smash hits like “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” award-winning successes like “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and even original, unique beauties such as “The Holdovers” and “Past Lives,” the movies of 2023 hit on all cylinders for both film buffs and the average moviegoers.

Now that the new year of 2025 has rung in, it is time to look back and reflect on the golden gems of 2024 cinema. Although 2024 was a lackluster year for movies in the grand scheme of film history - with a surplus of unnecessary, surface-level sequels and just an overall drop in popularity and attention - there were undoubtedly shining beacons of light in Hollywood that proved that originality, creativity, style, and beauty still exist on the big screen.

Arguably the biggest pop culture success of the year was Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked,” as it was one of the most imaginative, spirited, and hopeful movie musicals in recent history Released in late November, the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway show swept audiences away with its magical production, beautifully executed songs, and two powerhouse lead performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively

The film earned both critical and public acclaim, grossing over $680 million at the global box office - making it the highestgrossing movie musical of all timeracking up ten Oscar nominations, including nods for Erivo and Grande’s performances and the coveted Best Picture.

The cast and crew have already wrapped up filming for the widely anticipated “Wicked: For Good,” which covers the events of the musical’s second act and will be released in November 2025 As people sang their hearts out in the theaters, bought endless merchandise, and listened to the soundtrack on repeat, it is evident that no other film in 2024 captured the universal love and “Popular”-ity quite like “Wicked ”

The highest-rated and most popular movie of 2024 on Letterboxd - a movie-reviewing app with over 17 million users - was “Dune: Part Two,” which also happened to be my personal favorite The direct follow-up to 2021’s “Dune,” returning director Denis Villeneuve and young stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya offered a powerful, thematically strong, visually gorgeous, and action-packed epic full of both thrilling fantasies and grounded social and political commentaries

The critical and audience success of “Dune: Part Two,” with the 2024 film grossing over $700 million worldwide, already allowed the highly anticipated third entry in the franchise to be greenlit “Dune: Messiah,” also based on Frank Herbert’s novels, will be released in 2026 with Villeneuve returning to the director’s chair.

Atop the comic book genre was the summer blockbuster action-comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine ” Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their titular roles, the raunchy, bloody, unfiltered R-rated third entry in the beloved “Deadpool” franchise packed a punch with exciting cameos, beautifully shot action, a hysterically fun soundtrack, and two outstanding lead performances from Reynolds and Jackman that wonderfully balanced wild humor with genuine heart.

Deadpool’s comedically genius first entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) kept Marvel fans satisfied as the rest of the year’s comic book movies, such as “Madame Web” and “Venom: The Last Dance,” proved to be incredibly frustrating to sit through

Ending the year on a high note was “Nosferatu,” released on Christmas Day and directed by Robert Eggers Based on F W Murnau’s 1922 film of the same name which was previously inspired by Bram Stoker’s legendary “Dracula,” the gothic vampire horror flick kept viewers on the edge of their seats with a beautifully dark production, a haunting Count Orlok played unbelievably by Bill Skarsgård, a chilling score and sound design, and a jaw-dropping, emotionally taxing lead performance from Lily-Rose Depp.

GO LOCO FOR BOBO’S!

Bobo’s Cafe, originally founded as a family coffee shop in 1949 by Paul “Bo” Bernardi, has grown into a beloved eatery with five locations across Westchester and Fairfield counties Known for its fresh coffee and diverse menu of distinctive meals, Bobo’s has become a favorite in the community.

The chain currently has locations in Chappaqua, Baldwin Place, and Ridgefield However, for members of the Harvey community, the Somers location just a 10minute drive from campus offers a convenient spot for seniors who seek to eat lunch off campus or faculty craving a coffee break

According to Bobo’s enthusiast and 12th grade representative Benjamin Cutler, “The optimal time to explore the endless delicacies of ‘Le Bobo’s’ is roughly 11:45 a m on weekends right before the big noon rush and just in time to devour some exquisite brunch menu items with friends and family.”

It should be noted that most Bobo’s locations close around 4 p m , therefore it is difficult for Harvey students to obtain Bobo’s treats when they participate in after-school activities. However, the delectable items that Bobo’s is serving up makes the journey to a Bobo's location worth it

When you approach the Bobo’s menu, it is important to build your order based on your cravings and the time of day. For example, if you go early in the morning and are looking for something hearty, The Number One is the perfect choice This sandwich consists of bacon, egg, cheese, a layer of hash brown, avocado, and creamy sriracha on a croissant. Paired with fresh coffee, The Number One is the number one way to start your morning

The Number One is on the heavier side, so a simpler alternative is Bobo’s standard bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich And while the Pulse has previously reported on the best BECs in the area, in this writer's opinion, this sandwich trumps them all! In terms of other breakfast items, you can’t go wrong with any selection of avocado toasts, smoothies and bowls, and even waffles.

Of course, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but at Bobo’s, they are not messing around with lunch either They are serving up mouthwatering and savory sandwiches that will have you speeding to the cafe to pick up your lunch.

While some might gravitate toward the scrumptious barbecue chicken grilled cheese, it is really difficult to make a “wrong” choice. Harvey’s own Ms. Booth recommends the Nacho Libre And needless to say, every sandwich is paired with the signature hot honey chips of ‘Le Bobo’s.’

According to Ms. Holmes, the faculty advisor of The Pulse, a good indicator of a cafe’s quality is through trying their chai Luckily, Bobo’s passes this test with flying colors!

Their chai is not just a sugary, one-note drink; it’s a vibrant blend of spices and flavors that make each sip delightful In addition to chai, Bobo’s offers a variety of beverages, including an array of teas and coffees, both hot and iced.

Moreover, the charm of Bobo’s extends to its inviting ambiance No matter the location you visit, there is an unmistakable warmth that makes you feel at home. Personally, Bobo’s is the perfect spot for a change of scenery – it is effortless to slip on headphones and dive into a few hours of focused study or enjoy a cup of coffee while catching up with friends

Bobo’s is not just a coffee shop - it is a community hub where delicious food, exceptional drinks, and a cozy environment come together to define the ideal cafe experience. Whether grabbing a hearty breakfast, savoring a leisurely lunch, or simply picking up an order, Bobo’s consistently delivers an experience that keeps customers coming back (as my bank account can attest) So, seniors and faculty, when you are planning your next off-campus outing, remember the magical spot just minutes away from campus. And once you visit, I guarantee you will be going loco for Bobo’s.

THE WEST COAST IS BACK ON TOP WITH “GNX”

Continuing his winning streak, Kendrick Lamar has released his most straightforward project to date, “GNX ” 2024 has been a huge year for Lamar, and with the release of this album, it truly feels like there should be no debate around who deserves the title of “Rapper of the Year.” From his monumental win against Drake, to putting out one of the biggest songs of the year (“Not Like Us”), and even the announcement of his Super Bowl halftime performance, Lamar has been more focused than we have ever seen him.

Initially, the album was announced on Nov 22 through a teaser trailer on Lamar’s YouTube channel, but after only a few short hours, the album was officially released. This project is different from his previous releases and is his most surface-level project This is a change of pace for the Compton, California native, seeing as how his previous releases have been full of underlying meanings and messages.

Lamar makes this known on the opening song, “wacced out murals,” rapping, “[Forget] a double entendre, I want y'all to feel this.” For the better part of the record Lamar keeps this energy, being as straightforward as possible with the listener

The song opens with mariachi vocals from Deyra Barrera, who also offers her skills for the songs, “Gloria” and “Reincarnated ” In “wacced out murals,” Lamar criticizes the rap industry and the power struggles within the community. He acknowledges how headlining the Super Bowl halftime show should be a monumental moment for hip-hop, but no one other than Nas congratulated him “wacced out murals” alludes to ruined ideals within hip-hop culture. Overall, Lamar comes off as disappointed by the artists he used to idolize, even mentioning Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne

The song serves as a perfect introduction to the idea of the album that Lamar wishes to make as plain as possible: hip-hop culture lost its message Following up the introduction is “squabble up,” previously teased in the “Not Like Us” music video The song is a West Coast party anthem and makes you want to get up and dance along with the song and sing along with the chorus. The song is shrouded in West Coast energy from the beat to even the song referring to Los Angeles slang for fighting (or dancing)

Following up “squabble up” is “luther,” featuring some gorgeous vocals from SZA. The song is truly beautiful with some melodic flows from Lamar, which are perfectly complemented by SZA’s vocals The song is centered around Lamar wanting to empower his lover and build a better world for her The song is much more laid back than the previous track, but the beat and vocals are still groovy enough to move along with.

Next up on “GNX” is “man at the garden,” which opens with a minimalist beat and Lamar rapping why he deserves it all, even ending each bar with “I deserve it all.” The song is very much about Lamar’s self-worth, and the garden he refers to in the song could symbolize a Rap Legend status, which Lamar feels he deserves

The song builds with the harmonic, almost biblical humming vocals feeling more and more powerful as Lamar’s emotion becomes more and more passionate It almost feels like he’s telling the guard at the gate why he deserves it all The track even ends with Lamar being asked why he deserves to be called “The Greatest of All Time” before he responds, “I deserve it all” as the song fades out.

After a very dense and emotional cut of the record, listeners are given time to cool off with “hey now,” another bouncy track that is just a lot of fun to listen to. On the song, Lamar gives some love to a lesser-known West Coast rapper, Dody6 His verse fits right into the recording and shows Lamar trying to shine some light on West Coast artists who are not manufactured.

Right after “hey now,” we are treated to “reincarnated,” easily one of the standouts of the album While the song is not a banger like “squabble up” or “hey now,” it dives back into Lamar’s more spiritual side. From the start of the track, it is clear that this song is heavily inspired by Tupac Not only does Lamar sample a beat that Tupac has rapped over, but he even uses one of Tupac’s flows for this record, which feels very symbolic of Lamar embodying the heart of the West Coast.

THE CHELSEA FLEA MARKET: HISTORY AT OUR FINGERTIPS

The Chelsea Flea Market, held every Saturday and Sunday rain or shine, is an outdoor bazaar that sits comfortably on 29 West 25th St Ever since its organization in 1976, vendors from all over the city set up cozy booths to display unique antiques from around the world year round. Altogether a little village of sorts is created, sitting among the hustle and bustle of New York City.

The market is located not too far from Grand Central Terminal, as it is only a 20-minute scenic walk down through Koreatown and Madison Square Park Conveniently, there are an array of restaurants and cafes along the way, making it easy to stop and get a bite to eat or sit down for a pleasant meal

As soon as you step into the bazaar, you are greeted by the vibrant community that regularly participates in the Chelsea Flea Market The atmosphere is warm and welcoming; everybody is incredibly friendly, and the vendors enjoy telling the history behind their artifacts

One vendor in particular, who displayed an assortment of designer items such as purses, bags, jewelry, and clothing, explained that every piece was carefully picked out and checked for its authenticity by knowledgeable experts. The items were manufactured by iconic brands such as Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Not only are they sourced from such brands, but some items could be traced back to limited edition collections, meaning that certain pieces could be considered highly valued collectibles

Another vendor sold digital and film cameras that show the different methods of photography The cameras ranged from small handheld cameras to others that were much more hefty The vendor informed that he came into possession of all these cameras throughout his work in photography and videography He was also very open when it came to questions, and he eagerly taught those who were curious about the arts of photography and videography In addition, he had also maintained a steadily growing collection of film, lenses, and other accessories

Stands like the ones mentioned are in abundance at the Chelsea Flea Market. One could also encounter stands selling almost anything they could possibly think of, from antique brass and steel door knobs to vintage comics and magazines The Chelsea Flea Market truly has something for everyone.

Every item has its own unique story, inviting us into a glimpse into the past. One of the items in particular was a one-of-a-kind coat worn by a general in World War II. One can only imagine what experiences this relic has lived through considering the vendor stated that the coat was most likely worn in combat against the Nazis Items like this one truly are priceless, but the fact that they are up for grabs for quite reasonable prices is wonderful This coat, for example, cost only $75

The astonishing thing is that such artifacts are in abundance at the Chelsea Flea Market, and even if you are not looking to make a purchase, you can still enjoy the historical essence the items possess Think of it as a free admission museum, where some of the rarest antiques could be discovered To have such an opportunity to look through the lens of the previous lives of people is a privilege.

However, the most beautiful thing gifted by this unique bazaar is its hospitality and inclusivity. There are no admission fees of any kind, nor any tolerance toward negativity. Anyone who either participates in or explores the Chelsea Flea Market is given the respect and appreciation it deserves for bringing history to our fingertips

“LITTLE SHOP” CONT. FROM PAGE 3

Mr. Alexander specifically wanted to build a setting that would “feel like a comic book ” By using “comic book colors and building designs from ‘Batman’ comics as inspiration,” he created what he described as a “fun but dark” visual palette for the audience that cleverly matched the balancing tones of lightheartedness and grotesque horror

Although several key seniors will be graduating this coming year, Mr Alexander feels that with their leadership and the guidance of the hardworking faculty in this production, the Harvey Performing Arts Department is “building a strong company ” Overall, Harvey’s “Little Shop of Horrors” proved to be a delightful mix of horror and joy for audiences and everyone involved on and offstage

The Harvey production for the Winter Term will be “The Crucible,” codirected by Ms Virginia Holmes and Mr Austin Morgan It will be performed in the Lasdon Theater Feb 7 and Feb 8, 2025

2024 MOVIES CONT. FROM PAGE 10

One of the more under-the-radar films of the year was “Dìdi,” one of the most comforting, relatable, and authentic coming-of-age stories of the century Directed by Sean Wang, the film explores the life of 13-year-old Chris as he goes through the ups and downs of friendships, a stressful social life, complex family dynamics, and the wild roller coaster ride that is high school

With such heartfelt, human performances, an unbelievably down-to-earth script, and an extra punch of incredible humor, “Dìdi” hit all the right notes by telling such a genuine story about identity, family, motherhood and growing up that anyone can watch and connect with regardless of their background or walk of life.

Another extraordinary film with massive popularity on Letterboxd but less mainstream talk was Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers ” This high-energy love triangle story centers around two best friends who communicate their competing romantic desires for one of the greatest female tennis players of all time, played by Zendaya, through the game of tennis itself The film balances comedy with romance, thrilling sports intensity, and drama to create a narrative that connects these genres in a way that has never been seen before

The best way to describe this film is to emphasize the intense, pulsating atmosphere that it builds The three incredible lead performances of Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist all pack so much complexity between their characters, the booming techno score keeps the suspense at an all-time high, and the dynamic cinematography gives each sequence so much energy as the battle on and off the tennis court grows crazier, more competitive, and more intense. Most of all, the brilliantly engaging script throws twists and turns left and right every second to keep the audience guessing on who will come out on top, for whom they should be rooting, and whether the tennis matches between Faist and O’Connor are ever truly about tennis, or if they are about a greater interest

Overall, “Wicked,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Deadpool and Wolverine,” “Nosferatu,” “Dìdi,” and “Challengers” are the 2024 films that stood out from the pack of many unoriginal sequels and cash grabs as unique, authentic, groundbreaking, and unbelievably entertaining stories These films made me remember how special cinema truly can be when passionate filmmakers are given the freedom to put their visions on camera with a mix of a compelling script, memorable visual cues, beautiful music, and complex characters.

SKYLINE SECURITY CONT. FROM PAGE 4

After the plane’s pilot reported a bird strike, he said he would circle the plane around for a new flight landing attempt However, he did finish circling the plane before he began heading it southward

Regarding the technological specificities of the crash, The New York Times reports, “The pilot appeared unable to control the engines and no landing gear was visible as the plane made contact with the runway two critical elements in slowing a plane down during landing The plane also did not appear to have activated its wing flaps, another means of controlling speed ” After plunging down the landing strip on its belly, the plane overshot the runway, crashed into a concrete structure and burst into flames

Brian Rynott, senior vice president of marketing in the Americas at Altavair, an aviation finance company, comments, “These recent incidents underscore the urgent need for a holistic review of aviation security protocols and operational safeguards While aviation remains one of the safest modes of transportation, lapses in procedural adherence and evolving threats highlight vulnerabilities that demand swift and decisive action. Ensuring that every passenger, crew member, and aircraft is accounted for and secure should remain the industry’s top priority.”

From stowaways bypassing security to fatal crashes, the recent series of aviation security breaches underscore the need to reassess safety measures and ensure strict adherence to protocols. Maintaining security and preventing such tragedies must remain a central focus for the aviation sector in the upcoming year

UPDATE: This article was written before the aviation tragedy in Washington, D C that took place Jan 29 The Pulse continues to monitor the story, and our thoughts remain with all those affected

“GNX” CONT. FROM PAGE 12

After the very dense nature of “reincarnated,” Lamar lets us breathe once more for a longer period of time He follows up with “tv off,” “dodger blue,” and “peekaboo ” Personally, I found “dodger blue” and “peekaboo” to be forgettable on the album, as they don’t stand out all that much The tracks are fine but feel a bit unfinished, as if Lamar wanted to take a backseat on these songs to shine some light on the features who also hail from the West Coast

Concluding the album, Lamar ends with “heart pt 6” and “gloria,” which finishes off the album on a high note “heart pt 6” is a touching reflection of his journey as an artist and is not to be confused with Drake’s final diss to Lamar, “THE HEART PART 6 ” Closing out the record, “gloria” is a touching love story. At first, it may seem like Lamar is referring to a woman, but the listener soon comes to understand Lamar is rapping about his love for his pen, or in other words, his love for hip-hop.

Lamar’s most recent release serves as a reminder that he can do it all He can go from party anthems to deep reflective poetry without skipping a beat While the album can feel all over the place, it does not seem like Lamar was conveying an overarching theme like he has in the past.

“GNX” rating - Light 9/10
