THANKS TO OUR ANNUAL FUND LEADERSHIP THANK YOU MARK NADLER & MICHAEL SCARSELLA!
THANK YOU!
This is the largest annual fund in Harvey’s history—$780,000 raised—with 92% parent participation and 100% faculty and staff participation!
For the past two years, Mark and Michael have led the Annual Fund effort with dedication, enthusiasm, and inspiring personal support. Instrumental to their success was the support from their Grade Captains which included Paul Breitenbach for the sixth grade, Kirsten Carillo and Ingrid Wittmann for the 9th grade, Nancy Gurman for the 10th grade, and Patty Lambert and Baron Hersh for the 11th grade. This year’s senior class gift effort was led by Chairs Lori Peraglia and Elizabeth Schwartz. The class raised a record breaking $300,000 for the endowment to support financial aid. This gift was allocated to the capital campaign and is not included in the annual fund results.
We welcome Charlene Bocklet to the current parent Annual Fund team!
Alumni (Fifth Form) Garden & Fountain
Restoration and leadership of the garden and fountain was due to the efforts of Robert Hard ’66 and Robert Sullivan ’77. ALL ABOUT ENDOWMENT A school endowment is a pool of funds, often donated, and invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution. It is a vital resource and supports a variety of purposes within the school’s operating budget. Headmaster Fenstermacher often says, “It is the gift that keeps on giving.” Harvey’s endowment has grown to over $3.6 million as of June 2014. Within the endowment, there are restricted and unrestricted funds. To discuss how individual or family interests may match a need at Harvey, please contact the Development Office. GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUNDS UNRESTRICTED FUNDS The Ronald Duncan Trust was established in 1991 by a former teacher, Ronald Duncan, who left a bequest to Harvey in his will. Trustees outside the School are entrusted to remit to Harvey 5% annually of fair market value.
RESTRICTED FUNDS
The Rose Baldwin Reading Center Fund was established in 2013 in honor of former teacher Rose W. Baldwin to create a permanent place in the Harvey library where students can continue to be inspired by the literature and books she so loved.

The Dennis Dilmaghani ’62 Photography Fund was established by Dennis Dilmaghani, class of 1962, who has been a long-time supporter of Harvey and was a member of the Alumni Executive Board. His strong interest in supporting the arts, specifically photography, led him to subsidize this fund.
FACULTY ENDOWMENT FUNDS
The David M. Muntner Memorial Fund was established in memory of David M. Muntner, husband of Sally Breckenridge, Director of Alumni Relations and father of Harold Muntner ’06. This fund supports an annual award given at graduation to an outstanding technical theatre student. The recipient of this year’s award was Emily Silk ’14.
The John P. McMahon Fund for New Teachers was established upon John McMahon’s death in honor of his 39 years of teaching at Harvey. These funds will be used specifically to support and mentor new teachers. Recent donors to the fund are: Stephen C. Brooks ’69 Marni and Jerold Feuerstein Thomas A. McGraw, Jr. ’67 Lars A. Reierson ’83 Janee Waner-Szekely and Steven Szekely The Capital Group Companies, Inc.
The Rose W. Baldwin and James M. Robbins Fund
was established in 2006 as a 1950’s Reunion Class Gift— represents an unprecedented alumni effort that established a named fund to honor and recognize outstanding contributions of former teacher and librarian Rose Baldwin and one of our longest-serving former Trustees, James M. Robbins, for their years of service. Alumni James O. Robbins ’56, Howard Baldwin ’56 and Nicholas Firth ’56 provided the matching funds. More than $250,000 has been received. A recent donor to the fund is: Deborah H. Robbins
The Barry W. Fenstermacher Fund for Faculty and Staff Development was established by the Board of Trustees in honor of Barry’s 20th anniversary as Headmaster of The Harvey School. The underlying purpose is to provide the Head with one more means to attract, retain, and recognize outstanding faculty and staff. Approximately $250,000 was raised to launch this Fund. A recent donor to this fund is: Ann H. Munro

Mrs. Gene Lasdon Memorial Fund Gifts are received in recognition of her life and commitment to The Harvey School. Her son, Jeff and his wife Jeannette, along with their daughter, Jackie ’06, remain active and supportive. This fund will be used for the sole purpose of supporting and retaining Harvey’s faculty and staff. The Black Box Theater in the Arts Center was named in honor of the Lasdon Family. The Salice Endowment Fund This fund was created by former trustee Susan Salice and her husband, Tom, for the exclusive purpose of supporting and encouraging the professional development of The Harvey School faculty, staff and administration. Harvey graduates include daughters Sarah ’07 and Regina ’09.
WAYS OF GIVING TO HARVEY Parents, past parents, alumni, faculty and grandparents can demonstrate their commitment to The Harvey School with contributions of many kinds:
ANNUAL FUND Every year, the Annual Fund drive raises funds to support daily operations and help balance the budget. These funds make it possible for The Harvey School to attract and retain an outstanding faculty, to support the academic program, to provide tuition assistance to some of our families, and much more. Annual support helps to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and total instructional expenses (approximately $3,000 per student). Gifts to the Annual Fund are outright gifts which are fully deductible for income tax purposes. These gifts can be made in three ways: Cash is the simplest way to give and goes to work immediately for students and teachers. Checks and credit cards are the common way to give. Appreciated securities enable the donor to take a tax deduction on the full value of the gift and avoid capital gains on the transfer. In many instances, the real cost to the donor is far less than writing a check. Matching gift contributions from employers total nearly $60,000 each year. Please verify whether your employer or your spouse’s employer has such a program. If so, donors will be credited with the total combined gift in Harvey’s Annual Report.
EVENTS Every year, the Parents’ Association sponsors an auction which is held in the spring. In addition to being a wonderful way to meet new friends and get involved, last year’s benefit, A Taste of Harvey, was a tremendous success and helped to provide support for Harvey’s Educational Excellence Programs. Each family is asked to participate in some way.
PLANNED GIFTS These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance, real estate or other tangible property. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, a planned gift may not only greatly benefit The Harvey School, but may also provide significant tax savings for the donor.
Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.
CHARITABLE TRUSTS These are two popular ways to invest in The Harvey School’s future. Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the School, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member or other beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of this time, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School. Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee, who invests the amount transferred and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donor. When the trust terminates, the principal is transferred to a donor’s children or grandchildren at what may be significant gift and estate tax savings.
ALUMNI MEMORABILIA Alumni are also encouraged to send Harvey any school memorabilia they may have. This could be in the form of photos, school publications (Rambler, yearbooks, etc.), articles from their school years, athletic or academic awards, or any personal mementos. (Original photographs can be returned once they are copied, if requested.)

BEQUESTS AND WILLS
All you need to do is:
This gift is an important asset in planning for the future. Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust.
• Click Quicklinks (upper right)
Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcomed since they provide flexibility to the School’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed most. However, we recognize that many donors have specific interests that they want to encourage and support.
• Go to The Harvey School website, www.harveyschool.org • Click Amazon Store for Harvey • You’re in! Now whatever you buy in that purchase order will return 3–7% to Harvey. • Bookmark this link so that all of your purchases are linked to The Harvey School.

ALL ABOUT FINANCES A Message from Harvey’s Business Manager, Mike Drude Having the largest enrollment in school history has obvious benefits to the bottom line. When you combine that with the incredible generosity of our Harvey families and the introduction of a very successful international student program, you have a very special year and a comfortable budget surplus. That is the financial story of 2013–2014. Previous fundraising efforts were shattered by the class of 2014 which raised over $300,000 for a new endowment dedicated to financial aid. The bar is now quite high for future giving as this fund continues to grow with alumni contributions. What a wonderful gift it is to ensure that qualified students can afford a Harvey education for generations to come! The International Student Program was a wonderful addition to Harvey because it brought us six bright, interesting and talented students from China. Everyone agrees that these engaging young adults taught all of us as much, if not more, than we taught them. As Harvey students grow up in a global community with ever shrinking boundaries, the importance of this program and its success, is evident. The school year was not without its challenges. The costs of running a school continue to rise, but I am proud of how our community works together to ensure that every dollar spent is done so wisely and with one question in mind: “Does this expense help our mission of helping students maximize their potential?” In addition, providing quality and affordable healthcare insurance at little to no cost to the employee is a difficult endeavor but one that the school deems important and has continued.
The school’s future is bright due to the leadership of our trustees. Under their guidance, Harvey made great strides in the completion of a new Strategic Plan. While we look forward to sharing this plan with the entire Harvey community, I would like to mention two committees that grew out of the planning process. First, a Marketing Committee has been working all year to evaluate and enhance the school’s marketing efforts. Results from the committee’s work are being seen already in the coordination of various departmental efforts and the strengthening of the Harvey brand. You will hear and see more as the year unfolds and as the fruits of the committee’s labors become evident. Second, a new Investment Committee was formed and is dedicated to investing the endowment in a prudent manner while maximizing annual returns. Finally, our students’ pride in the Harvey community has never been higher. The Student Council continues to grow and bring fresh ideas for greater programs, the formation of a Senior Leadership Class is wrestling with real issues of how to improve the Harvey campus and communication, and the Neperan/Pocantico tradition is still alive and well. You can feel the energy everywhere you go on campus and I encourage you to stop by and feel the Harvey Pride. Thank you for your continued investment in The Harvey School! Thank you,
J. Michael Drude, Business Manager

2014 senior class gift
The Largest Senior Class Gift in School’s History! A tradition began 13 years ago when the senior class was looking for an additional way to say “thank you” to The Harvey School. Since then, numerous class gifts have literally transformed the way the Harvey campus looks and operates. There have always been two components to the class gifts: part of the gift is allocated for Harvey’s endowment and part supports a more tangible and visible project that is selected by students, parents and the administration. This year, the Student Council proposed the idea to purchase new furniture for the Walker Center for the Arts which has greatly enhanced the seating and look of the gallery. The larger part of the gift was the establishment of an endowment to specifically support the financial aid program. Thanks to the leadership of Class Chairs Lori Peraglia and Liz Schwartz and our challenge donor, over $300,000 was raised which will provide meaningful support to families who could not otherwise afford a Harvey education. As the 2014 scholarship fund grows, it will play a vital role in helping to continue to attract qualified students and maintain the diversity for which Harvey is so proud.
Past tangible gifts include: Class of 2013 equipment for Fitness Center Class of 2012 construction of Athletic Center lobby Class of 2011 new bleachers and softball field Class of 2010 solar panels on Carter Hall roof Class of 2009 parking lot beautification Class of 2008 patio construction and new landscaping around Sylvan Hall faculty endowment
A plaque will bear the name of each senior in recognition of this class’s generosity. Thank you to all who made this record-breaking gift possible!

CHARITABLE GIVING
2013–2014
ANNUAL FUND (unrestricted and restricted) $780,000 This is the largest annual fund in Harvey’s history with 92% parent participation and 100% faculty and staff participation. This support along with the Benefit proceeds comprise over 8% of the School’s operating budget and directly support faculty salaries, tuition assistance and new programs. Each year, the entire Harvey family is asked to contribute to the annual fund. While unrestricted support is preferred some gifts are allocated for a specific purpose. Thanks to the efforts of Class Gift Chair Debra Alexander, the largest 8th grade class gift ($15,000) will provide funds for new furniture and educational materials to maximize teaching at the Middle School. The Krasne Project, funded by Board Treasurer Charles and his wife, Tammy, continues to provide technology support and computer hardware for use in the classroom. This past year, a robotics program was begun and new 3D printers were purchased. A new space in Sylvan Hall was specially created for this program. Also, the Click-N-Save program continues to bring revenue to the school through Amazon on-line purchases made by the Harvey community. These funds are earmarked for new Athletic Center equipment and furnishings. In addition, our alumni Robert Hard ’66 and Robert Sullivan ’77 spearheaded an effort to raise $20,000 to restore the Alumni (Fifth Form) Garden and Fountain. And finally, the Parents Association’s annual benefit, A Taste of Harvey, was one of this year’s highlights and raised $180,000 for Harvey’s programs. Held for the first time in our new Athletic Center, parents, faculty, alumni and staff enjoyed an unforgettable evening with restaurant samplings from many local venues. A special thanks to Co-Chairs Dawn Robertson and Pamela Slater and their amazing Benefit team.
CORNERSTONE FOR THE FUTURE—CAPITAL CAMPAIGN $729,000 Athletic Center and tennis courts—The new Athletic and Fitness Center is now complete and in daily use by students and faculty. The next project will be to construct six new tennis courts to support Harvey’s three-time HVAL Championship tennis team. Parent volunteers, under the leadership of Campaign Chair Phil Bowers ’70 and Parents Committee Chair Liz Schwartz, continue to reach out to every family. Gifts received after March 2012 now have twice the impact since four generous trustee families have initiated a “leadership challenge” to ensure the campaign’s successful conclusion by matching every dollar received from the community. Endowment—Thanks to our Co-Chairs Liz Schwartz and Lori Peraglia, this year’s senior class broke all records for their class gift by raising $300,000 to establish an endowment for financial aid. Gifts to this 2014 Class Scholarship Fund and the Rose Baldwin Reading Center Fund helped push us over our $1 million endowment goal for the current campaign.
TOTAL CHARITABLE GIVING (as of June 30, 2014) $1,509,000
