Message from the Head of School
Celebrating a Year of Achievements at The Harvey School
As I reflect on the 2023-2024 academic year at The Harvey School, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the remarkable accomplishments that have defined our journey. This was a transformative year, not only in our strategic advancements but also in the extraordinary achievements of our students and the unwavering support of our community. Our school year began with the unveiling of our new strategic plan, a comprehensive roadmap designed to guide our progress over the coming years. The plan outlines four essential priorities: offering meaningful personalized educational journeys, fostering resilience and wellness, updating our campus, and enhancing our financial sustainability. As I think about some of the highlights of the past year, it is evident that these priorities have not only guided us but also inspired us to reach new heights.
Our efforts to tailor education to individual needs and interests have been truly rewarding. For our Middle School students, the introduction of the new Study Skills class was a significant step forward. This class now provides crucial support in organization, time management, and executive functioning, equipping our students with skills essential for success and growth. Additionally, the implementation of The Writing Revolution has helped to enhance our Middle School students’ writing capabilities through strategies that foster clarity and coherence.
In our Upp er School, the launch of the Teaching Fellows program also stands out as a notable achievement. This initiative has provided aspiring teachers with valuable mentorship from experienced educators, supporting their professional growth while enriching our school’s educational environment. One of the most exciting developments last year was the Harvey G.O.E.S. (Harvey Global Opportunities in Enhanced Studies) program’s international collaboration. In January 2024, five Danish students and their teacher visited our campus to embark on a STEM
project focused on designing and building an autonomous underwater vehicle for aquatic data collection. This partnership culminated in an enriching experience for our students and teachers who traveled to Denmark in June. The interdisciplinary project, which involved students in marine science, biology, ecology, environmental science, robotics, and film and media studies, was captured in a student-created documentary. This global collaboration exemplifies our commitment to fostering cultural fluency through innovative educational experiences.
Our students’ extraordinary and varied accomplishments during the 2023-2024 school year were a testament to the wide range of opportunities that a Harvey education offers. Among those many accomplishments: fourteen students were inducted into the Japanese National Honor Society; twelve participated in the American Mathematics Competition 10; five seniors participated in the Katonah Museum of Art’s 41st annual Young Artists 2024 exhibition; and six new members were inducted into the National Art Honor Society. Additionally, the recognition of The Harvey School on the College Board’s 2023 Advanced Placement Program’s Honor Roll highlights our commitment to increasing college readiness and providing opportunities for students to earn college credit.
Outside of the classroom, our students also reached impressive heights. Harvey’s athletics program has continued to excel; during the 2023-2024 academic year alone, our student-athletes won eight league championship titles! Our coaches benefit from training with the Positive Coaching Alliance, ensuring that our young athletes are supported to become their best selves both on and off the field. In the realm of performing arts, our students staged 11 productions and performances last year; our Middle School students dazzled audiences with their production of “Matilda Jr. The Musical,” while our upper school students delivered a captivating performance of Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast: The Broadway Musical.” These achievements underscore our commitment to nurturing creative talents and providing a well-rounded educational experience.
While the concept of fostering resilience and wellness is central to everything we do here at Harvey, last year we set in motion two initiatives in this area that we are now seeing come to fruition. It goes without saying that our most significant recent initiative addressing student well-being is our cell phone-free initiative, which came into effect in September. Research indicates that reducing cell phone distractions can improve academic performance, decrease anxiety, and enhance overall mental health. This change will prioritize face-to-face interactions, promoting stronger
relationships and better communication skills, and cultivating a school culture that emphasizes in-person connections and social-emotional growth. We also recently launched Harvey’s new partnership with Northwell Health to provide school teachers, counselors, administrators, families and caregivers with the tools and resources they need to support our students’ mental health.
Regarding campus development, this year marked the beginning of our Weil House and Barn Complex construction. This project will house our non-academic offices, freeing up much-needed space at the top of the campus for academic use. The red barn will provide a versatile space for extracurricular activities, student gatherings, and community events while serving as a welcoming venue for alumni reunions.
The Weil Hous e and Barn will also serve as an impressive front door to our campus, creating a memorable first impression for prospective families and the community. We are proud to report that we have secured 75% of our $6 million fundraising goal for this project, which is anticipated to be completed by Fall 2025. We remain actively engaged in fundraising efforts to ensure the project’s success and its positive impact on our school community. The Weil House and Barn renovation is the most significant of our Cornerstone Campaign projects, which also include the renovation of the O’Malley and Stafford Dormitories and the lower level of the Krasne Middle School.
As we c elebrate the success of the past year, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Harvey community. Your financial support and volunteer efforts have been instrumental in making this year’s successes possible. Your contributions have enabled us to pursue our strategic priorities and support our students’ growth and achievements. Together, we have made significant strides in our educational mission, and we look forward to building on these accomplishments in the coming year. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to The Harvey School.
With gratitude,
William J. Knauer P’23, Head of School
Message from the Chair of the Board
The purpose of The Harvey School is to provide each student with the necessary tools and support to accomplish their personal education goals both in and out of the classroom.
Each year, The Harvey School team sets out to make each student’s experience an exceptional one. The Harvey faculty and administrators are dedicated to ensuring that our students have the best possible opportunity for success regardless of the external pressures that are always present and very much a part of modern life. The Harvey team, led by Bill Knauer, is laser focused on each child’s educational success. Thank you to every member of that team for their dedication and tireless support of Harvey’s mission.
I am also grateful to my fellow Trustees who contribute to the success of Harvey in so many ways. They are generous with their time and talent, in addition to their financial support to our school. I am proud to report that 100% of our Board has made a commitment to Harvey’s Cornerstone Campaign, a testament to our dedicated Board and their belief in this project.
Philanthropy and you who have provided those funds are just as important to Harvey’s success. I am especially grateful to our generous Leadership Donors who contributed $7,500 or more to Harvey between July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. You are the reason for Harvey’s success.
It is not just the dollars gifted, but the message of belief that comes with those gifts; Harvey and the Harvey mission meet an important need in the educational landscape.
The Cornerstone Campaign has reached 75% of the $6 million goal for the Weil House and Barn Complex. After several years of planning and an extensive approval process with the Town of Bedford, construction has begun. We are grateful to each of the donors to this project. They have helped make Harvey’s vision
for the Weil House and Barn a reality. This project provides much needed space to the school academic programs by housing non-academic departments at the bottom of the hill. We look forward to completing the campaign in the coming year, before the planned opening of the space in the fall of 2025.
The Harvey Fund had an extraordinary year. We exceeded our goal, raising over $1.1 million. This fund supports our annual operations — both academic and extracurricular programs. The Harvey Cavalier alumni community demonstrated incredible support this year. We received more than twice the number of alumni donations than last year during our February Days of Giving. Thank you! We were also honored by alumnus Steven C. Rockefeller III ’75 who generously donated a remarkable painting by the esteemed Chinese artist Ma Xinle. It was showcased alongside student artwork at Harvey’s annual Student Art Show in April.
It has b een an extraordinary year. We look forward to exceeding our goals again in 2024-25, which will only happen with your participation and support. Thank you for all you do, and all you will do.
With thanks and appreciation,
Eileen Walker P’03, ’05 Chair, Board of Trustees

Letter from the 2023-24 Harvey Fund Chairs
Dear Harvey Hilltop community,
As the new school year gets underway, we want to acknowledge our community’s incredible spirit and generosity. Your contributions to the Harvey Fund make many of the opportunities found here on the Hill possible, from small classes to robust arts, athletics, and student trips.
First, s ome highlights: our Inaugural ‘Days of Giving’ raised $254,000 from 447 donors (6th and 9th grade families had the highest participation levels). Of all new parents and guardians, 74% participated in the Days of Giving! We are all genuinely moved by the generosity of the Harvey community here on the Hilltop and from our alumni community across the country and worldwide.
To those who attended the sold-out Spring Celebration: Party in the Park, it was a stunning event that won’t be soon forgotten. The Fenstermacher Athletic Center was transformed with park benches and streetlamps as we raised over $209,000 for the Harvey Fund, including more than $21,000 in individual and corporate sponsorships. We want to thank all the volunteers, staff, and faculty for their vision, effort, and support. A huge thank-you goes out the Spring Celebration 2024 co-chairs: Linda Holden-Bryant P’24, Valerie Nelson P’22, ’24, Deanna Marano P’25, ’27, Gina Stoller P’28, Andrew Jamieson ’09, and Kate Meersschaert!
We are delighted to have been gifted an incredible piece of Chinese artwork by Steven Rockefeller Jr. ’75. It will be displayed at various campus art shows throughout the year. We also thank our alumni whose participation and gifts increased this year. Finally, we close out with great appreciation to the 60% of all current parents and guardians who contributed to the Harvey Fund.
Every gift to the Harvey Fund helps close the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of running the school. Every dollar allows us to meet immediate needs and act on unique opportunities, such as making maple syrup on campus and supporting Harvey Grows, our in-house horticulture program, when they arise. With your support we raised $1.1 million this year which enabled us to move our mission forward and support all the best hallmarks of a Harvey education like small class sizes, Harvey G.O.E.S., experiential learning beyond the classroom, and unique learning opportunities.
So many members of our community give to the Harvey Fund: current families, alumni and their families, and friends of Harvey near and far. We are so grateful for all the different people who show up to support our school and community in this way. We look forward to the next year of exceptional education, sports, arts, and friendship at Harvey — thank you for making it all possible. Have a wonderful 2024-25 school year, and see you on the Harvey Hilltop!
With Gratitude,

The Senior Class Legacy Gift is traditionally a legacy the senior families leave behind as a “thank you” to the faculty and staff who have made Harvey so memorable to them. Traditionally, the gift has two parts: the first is a high priority that will have a long-term financial impact on the school, and the second is a tangible project identified by the administration as something the school needs. This year, the Class of 2024 families raised more than $89,000, which will support an endowment fund in honor of the class for financial aid to ensure engaged students of all socioeconomic backgrounds can attend Harvey and have a broad range of opportunities to explore their interests and passions. Additionally, they contributed toward renovating and updating the Carter Hall Dining Hall, a space used by every member of the Harvey Hilltop community.

Eighth Grade Class Legacy Gift
To celebrate the culmination of our students’ middle school years, the eighth grade families leave a meaningful legacy gift to the Krasne Middle School. This year, we are excited to dedicate the Eighth Grade Class Legacy Gift to renovating the Middle School faculty lounge and office. The parents of the Class of 2028 raised more than $29,000. The money raised will cover the cost of the class gift project, and the remaining balance will be allocated to the Harvey Fund. Thank you to Elizabeth Harris, Dan Bigman, Shayna Klopott, and Michael Frankel for supporting the Harvey Fund and spearheading the Eighth Grade Class Legacy Gift for 2024.

Harvey Fund Alumni
Thank you to all of our Harvey
Alumni!
Our alumni are an integral part of the Harvey community; their support not only sustains us but propels us forward. We are deeply grateful to the alumni who generously contributed philanthropically and to those who shared their time and expertise with current students. Leading by example and engaging in alumni events inspires the next generation and strengthens the bonds that make Harvey so exceptional. Together, we can continue to shape the future and ensure that Harvey’s legacy and the student experience thrive for years.

Cornerstone Campaign
Growing from the need to renovate the Weil House and Barn into usable space for the Harvey community, a process that began in 2016, the Cornerstone Campaign was officially launched in 2022.
The purpose of the Cornerstone Campaign is to raise funds for four pressing capital renovations that will have an immediate positive impact on our community: the Weil House and Barn renovation, the creation of classroom space in Sylvan Hall, the renovation of the lower level of Krasne Middle School, and essential improvements to the Stafford and O’Malley Dormitories.
We are pleased to share that in Spring 2024 we entered the active construction phase of the Weil House and Barn renovation, and that we have raised $4.5 million toward our $6 million goal. We are delighted to recognize all of the members of the community who have so generously contributed to this project since its inception.

All About Endowment
A school endowment is a pool of funds that is invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution.
Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our Investment Committee, our Endowment, including the Ronald Duncan Trust, has grown to more than $7 million. The majority of our funds are dedicated to financial aid and faculty professional development and materially impact the lives of our students and faculty. To discuss how your interests can match a need at Harvey, please contact Sarah Parker at sparker@harveyschool.org.

The Harvey School Planned Gifts
These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, life insurance, real estate, or other tangible property. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, a planned gift may not only greatly benefit The Harvey School but might also provide significant tax advantages for the donor and the donor’s family.

Members of this ever-growing generous group have indicated that they have made provisions for Harvey in their estate plans. We are truly grateful to all those who have made provisions in their will for The Harvey School. Through these generous bequests, Harvey is assured long-term fiscal health.

Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust.
Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcomed since they provide flexibility to the school’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed the most, We recognize that some donors, however, have specific interests that they want to encourage and support.
Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support, or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.
Charitable Trusts
» Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the school, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member, or another beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of the term, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School.
» Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee who invests the principal and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donors. When the term of the trust expires, the principal is transferred to a donor’s family or other beneficiary at what may be a significant gift and estate tax savings.
