Impact Report 2022-23

Message from the Head of School

The theme for the 2022-23 school year was Imagine the Possibilities, and as the year comes to a close, it is evident that we took the opportunity to do just that.

Whether it was in the classroom, on the athletic field, or on the stage, we found multiple ways to bring opportunities to our students and faculty to make this an engaging and fulfilling year for our community. I say this both as the head of school and as a proud parent, who watched my daughter, Emiliana, graduate in June, the culmination of seven remarkable years at Harvey.

The 2022-23 academic year began and ended in a more traditional way than it had for the past few years. We had a traditional convocation in September where we welcomed back our students — including 100 new students — and faculty members, and we ended the year with a full commencement honoring our largest class in history with 82 students graduating and moving on to an impressive array of colleges, universities, and other programs, opening a world of possibilities to our new graduates.

Additionally, we welcomed parents back to campus and returned to in-person PA meetings with several held at night to ensure that we were welcoming all parents to be engaged as well. We also held a number of community-wide events on campus during the course of the year. We kicked off the year with our State of the School dinner, which featured new programming and projects. We welcomed the fall with our annual Homecoming, where a record-setting number of families and alumni showed up to support our teams and enjoy the campus. At Winterfest, a new community gathering in January, families came together to share their favorite foods and traditions. Finally, we transformed our athletic center for our spring celebration, “Don’t Stop Believing,” where 240 members of our community came together for the evening to share school spirit and raise more than $250,000 to support our programs and the opportunities we provide for our students.

We had many highlights this year, including several championship athletic teams, terrific arts performances, robotics competitions, and Model UN trips. We also were fortunate to have received approval from the Town of Bedford to begin work on the Weil House & Barn Complex, which is now part of the Cornerstone Campaign and includes expanded classroom space in Sylvan Hall, the renovation of the

lower level of the Krasne Middle School, and renovation of the O’Malley and Stafford dormitories. This year, we raised nearly $1 million in contributions toward the project, bringing our total raised to $4 million toward our campaign goal of $6 million.

We rebranded our annual giving program as the Harvey Fund to reinforce that support of our annual giving program acts to enrich the Harvey community and makes a difference in the lives of our students and faculty. Through your generosity, we reached our $1.1 million goal, enabling us to build and enhance the experience for all of our students and faculty.

As you have heard me say many times in many forums, none of this would be possible without you, our engaged and generous community. As you read through the pages of this Impact Report, you will see the results of all the work we did together this year and read features on a few of the people, among many, who stepped up to make a real difference in our community. Whether you are a PA volunteer, a class parent, a member of the Alumni Association, or a Harvey Fund donor, collectively you make a difference to our students, our staff, and our school.

Your generosity provides the foundational financial strength for our fundraising efforts that allow us to continue to fulfill our commitment to provide an enriching and exceptional educational experience for all students. Once again you have demonstrated the incredible impact the Harvey community can make on our students and our school. I am grateful for your trust and support of Harvey’s mission. Thank you for helping us to imagine the possibilities.

With gratitude,

Message from the Chair of the Board

It is an honor and a privilege to lead The Harvey School Board of Trustees. As I reflect on the 2022-23 school year, and all that we have accomplished as a community, I am grateful for my fellow Trustees, for the passionate and committed faculty and staff, for Bill Knauer’s steadfast leadership, and for all of you who have continued to support the school to ensure that we are able to help our students and faculty Imagine the Possibilities.

The 2022-23 academic year was precedent-setting on many levels. From a fiduciary standpoint, it was one of our most impactful fundraising years. Having received final approval from the Town of Bedford for the Weil House & Barn Complex project, we were able to shift our efforts more fully to fundraising, and with the help of the Cornerstone Campaign Committee, we have reached two-thirds of our $6 million goal. This year alone, thanks to the deep generosity of our Harvey community, we raised $1 million toward the completion of the project.

Our Harvey Fund effort was also outstanding, raising nearly $1.1 million. As you know, annual giving funds, especially those that are unrestricted, provide Bill and his team with the most opportunities to meet and exceed the needs of the students. Thanks to your support, we have established a Teaching Fellows program that gives young teachers the opportunity to join Harvey, honing their skills as new teachers while providing additional educational resources to the school. Additionally, your giving supported enhancements to all of our academic, athletic, and arts programs. All of this is a result of your generosity.

We have also added more than $150,000 to Harvey’s endowment, the lion’s share of which will go toward the financial aid endowment, enabling students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford Harvey to attend and be fully engaged in the program.

Our two named scholarships, in honor of Maury Leone and Jock Burbank ’56, continue to grow and support our students as well.

It is the supp ort from each of you that enables Harvey to provide an outstanding educational experience for all of our students.

S pecial thanks to our leadership level donors, who led our success with their generosity by contributing $7,500 or more (all funds included) in 2022-23. These donors provide the financial foundation that allows us to continue to fulfill our mission.

Thank you for being a part of another successful year!

With thanks and appreciation,

“Always be present for the students. Go to their games, concerts, plays and art shows.
Show them you care outside the classroom.”

Why I

Give

Marcie Hajem P’28

Marcie Hajem joined the Harvey faculty in 1998, just a few years out of school herself. She began as a science teacher, dorm parent and girls’ basketball coach, and quickly added Department Chair, Grade Dean, and Assistant Head of Middle School to her roles. As if that were not enough, for years, Marcie has volunteered to assist the arts department with making and choosing the costumes for Middle and Upper School productions. Marcie has truly thrived in all of these varying roles, treating Harvey as much more than just a place of work, and treating her fellow teachers and students like family. Over the years, as Marcie’s own family has grown, they have joined her on campus and have become beloved members of the Harvey community as well.

Marcie’s father had a long career as an educator, so with him as a role model, it was not surprising that she became a teacher. When Marcie decided to pursue a career in education, her father advised, “Always be present for the students. Go to their games, concerts, plays and art shows. Show them you care outside the classroom.” These words of wisdom have driven Marcie’s heart and passion throughout her teaching career. Over the last 25 years, Marcie has had a meaningful impact on hundreds of students as a teacher, coach, and dorm parent. Her willingness to jump in and give back in whatever capacity she can is truly the Harvey way. We are very fortunate to have Marcie in our community and are honored to recognize and thank her for the tremendous impact she has had on all of us.

Letter from the 2022-23 Harvey Fund Chairs

As the co-chairs of the Harvey Fund, we sincerely thank you for all your support this year.

At Harvey, our goal is to offer our children the best educational experiences and create endless exciting opportunities to prepare them to become their best selves. The school relies on every community member’s support to do what it does best — create a special place for our children to engage, become empowered, and grow joyfully.

Together, this year, we raised nearly $1.1 million for the Harvey Fund. Your contributions, whether by giving your time, your talent, or making a financial gift, are deeply appreciated and directly impact the students and faculty. Harvey Fund gifts are spent in the current academic year to help cover the cost of daily needs, enabling the school to hire and retain the most qualified and passionate teachers; invest in the academic program; increase financial aid; ensure Harvey’s signature small class sizes; maintain leading-edge technology; and more. Imagine the possibilities!

In February 2023, the school celebrated Harvey’s Founders Day and Day of Giving. At drop-off, we watched the students welcome their parents and caregivers, offering coffee and sweet treats and giving away Harvey swag. The fun continued with the entire student body and faculty enjoying the cake-cutting tradition by the youngest Harvey students, followed by an exciting spirit contest to conclude the morning gathering. It was truly a joyous, memorable morning! Founders Day and Day of Giving are also heartwarming for another reason: they present the Harvey community with the opportunity to show our gratitude.

On the Day of Giving, on campus and virtually via the Harvey interactive platform, more than 350 supporters came

together and raised $250,400 in just one day! Further, in the spirit of giving, the Development Office hosted a book drive and distributed the books to the children in Blythedale Children’s Hospital on Valentine’s Day — such an impactful way to give back the love Harvey received on Founders Day to such an important cause.

We are also grateful to Harvey’s faculty and staff who work tirelessly to build the best academic foundation for our children and guide and encourage them daily. Last, but not least, we give a shout-out to the Harvey Fund ambassadors who offered their time and commitment to supporting our fundraising efforts throughout the year by cultivating and communicating to their peers the importance of annual giving. The ambassadors’ roles significantly impact the school’s fundraising efforts, which are greatly felt by the entire Harvey community.

We’re looking forward to another successful year on the Harvey hilltop! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all your continued support.

Have a great school year!

Thank you!

Harvey Fund Lead Donors

The Harvey Fund is the philanthropic foundation for everything we do at Harvey; it closes the gap in operational expenses that tuition alone is not able to cover. It supports educational initiatives enriching every facet of student life — academics, arts, athletics, and technology. So much more is made possible for Harvey students and faculty through a strong Harvey Fund.

It is with profound gratitude that we recognize our Harvey Fund leadership donors’ generosity and acknowledge the impact they have on the Harvey community. Please note that this list only includes gifts made to the Harvey Fund, both unrestricted and restricted gifts. Gifts made at the Spring Celebration: Don’t Stop Believing in The Possibilities (excluding sponsors and underwriters), to the Endowment, or to the Cornerstone Campaign are recognized separately in the Impact Report.

Eighth Grade Class Gift

To celebrate the culmination of our students’ middle school years, the eighth grade families leave a meaningful legacy gift to Krasne Middle School. The 2022-23 Eighth Grade Class was excited to dedicate their gift to renovating the Krasne Middle School Commons Room and creating an Outdoor Fitness Trail. The parents of the Class of 2027 raised more than $70,000. The money raised will cover the cost of the class gift project, estimated to be between $25,000-$30,000, and the remaining balance will be allocated to the Harvey Fund. A big thank-you to Jennifer Fisher and Jean Kouremetis for supporting the Harvey Fund and chairing the Eighth Grade Class Gift project.

Senior Class Gift

The Senior Class Gift is a legacy the senior families leave behind as a “thank you” to the faculty and staff who have made Harvey so special for them. Traditionally, the gift has two parts: the first is a high priority that will have a long-term impact on the school, and the second is a tangible project that has been identified by the administration as something the school needs in the immediate future. The Class of 2023 families contributed to an endowment fund for financial aid, to help ensure that engaged students of all socioeconomic backgrounds are able to attend Harvey and have a broad range of opportunities to explore their interests and passions. Additionally, the Senior Class parents contributed to the renovation of Mennen Library, including a redesigned space to provide students additional resources to work individually, in small groups, or to meet with faculty. Enhancements include the resizing of the circulation desk and office, new carpeting and paint, as well as the addition of a glass-encased study room. Thank you to the Class of 2023!

Why I Give Jenny Rynott P’23, ’25

The Rynott family joined Harvey in September 2019 when their son, Alexander, enrolled as a rising ninth-grade student. While Harvey was much larger than Alexander’s previous school, the Rynotts immediately felt the warm embrace of Harvey and Jenny committed herself to playing an active role in the community. Jenny quickly joined the Parent Association and was a major contributor in relaunching the Parent Ambassador Program, becoming a regular presence on campus and continuing to be actively involved at Harvey even through the pandemic.

In 2021, the Rynotts brought their daughter, Daniela, to join Alex at Harvey. Daniela became the first recipient of the prestigious Maury Leone Scholarship, which prompted Jenny to explore how she might further

give back to Harvey by lending her talents to fundraising.

During the 2022-23 school year, Jenny made her first foray into fundraising at Harvey, co-chairing the Senior Class Gift Committee with veteran fundraiser and Trustee, Jerri-Lynn Galgano P’20, ’23. These two women had a formidable partnership, creating a committee of six Senior Class parents who worked collaboratively to surpass their goals.

Jenny’s impact can be felt in so many areas of the Harvey community, and she continues to be actively involved in the Parent Association. We are so lucky to have Jenny as part of our team and look forward to working with her for years to come. Thank you for all you do for Harvey, Jenny!

Harvey Fund Alumni

Thank you to all of our Harvey Alumni!

Our alumni are an integral part of the Harvey community. We are grateful for our network of alumni who support Harvey philanthropically, and in many other ways, volunteering their time to mentor current students and helping to craft alumni engagement events.

Harvey Fund

On February 9, 2023, Harvey celebrated its third Day of Giving as our entire community came together to support and show gratitude to Harvey by raising more than $250,000 from 370 donors across all constituencies. Alumni, current parents, past parents, faculty and staff, and friends of Harvey all joined together to make a strong statement of support for Harvey in its mission “to prepare and inspire students to become independent, adventurous thinkers and engaged, compassionate citizens in courageous pursuit of knowledge and truth.”

G enerating incredible enthusiasm early on, we were able to surpass our “Early Bird” challenge before 10 a.m. to unlock a $25,000 gift from a generous donor. The alumni and development office utilized a user-friendly web page that updated supporters in real time throughout the day, keeping tabs on the various challenges and helping classes take part in some friendly competition.

Through the generosity of the Harvey community, we surpassed our goals for both the athletic and art departments, enabling the school to fund vital projects including upgrades to The Walker Center for the Arts, the transformation of Krasne Middle School classrooms into flexible learning spaces, and the purchase of a Turf Tank for our athletic fields. Thank you to all of our Day of Giving supporters!

Mark your calendars for our Week of Giving: February 5-9, 2024!

Highlights of the Day

Grades with the highest participation: Grade 7 (Class 2028) and Grade 8 (Class of 2027)

We surpassed last year’s faculty and staff participation of 65% which unlocked an additional gift from an anonymous donor in honor of the 2022-2023 faculty and staff.

We received 57 donations from new parents and guardians, which unlocked an additional $5,000 gift from an anonymous member of our Board of Trustees

Congratulations to our winning alumni class, the Class of 2009, for leading both in participation and total amount raised!

All About Endowment

A school endowment is a pool of funds that is invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution.

Thanks to the commitment and dedication of our Investment Committee, our Endowment, including the Ronald Duncan Trust, has grown to nearly $7 million. The majority of our funds are dedicated to financial aid and faculty professional development, and materially impact the lives of our students and faculty. To discuss how your interests can match a need at Harvey, please contact Sarah Parker at sparker@harveyschool.org

Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves or their family by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust.

Unrestricted bequests are particularly appreciated since they provide flexibility to the school to use the gift in whatever way is needed the most.

Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support, or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.

Charitable Trusts

» Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the school, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member, or another beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of the term, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School.

» Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee who invests the principal and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donors. When the term of the trust expires, the principal is transferred to a donor’s family or other beneficiary at what may be a significant gift and estate tax savings.

Cornerstone Campaign

Growing from the need to renovate the Weil House and Barn into usable space for the Harvey community, a process that began in 2016, the Cornerstone Campaign was officially launched in 2022. The Cornerstone Campaign addresses, in addition to the Weil House and Barn, the creation of classroom space in Sylvan Hall, the renovation of the lower level of Krasne Middle School, and essential improvements to the Stafford and O’Malley Dormitories.

We are pleased to share that during the 2022-23 school year, the Weil House and Barn project has transitioned to the pre-construction and construction phase. We have secured the necessary approvals and permits from the town of Bedford, have begun to implement our landscaping plans, and are in the process of bidding out the construction portion of the project. The groundbreaking for the Weil House and Barn Complex was held at Homecoming on October 21, 2023.

We are deeply grateful to all of the members of the Harvey community who have been so supportive as we have managed the various phases of the Weil House and Barn project, and now the Cornerstone Campaign. We have raised $4 million toward the $6 million Campaign goal, and are delighted to recognize all of the members of the community who have contributed to these projects since their inception.

Message from the Parent Association

When the three of us were invited to lead the Harvey Parent Association (PA) for the 2022-23 school year, we were honored to be selected, and we knew we had big shoes to fill.

We had a lot to learn as our involvement in the PA before that time had been limited. Previously, the COVID-19 pandemic had put a damper on volunteering and we were all relatively new to the school. However, the opportunity to lead was exciting. Our families have had such a great experience at Harvey and we knew that by working together we could positively impact the parent community. In addition, with the pandemic in the “rearview mirror” by the fall of 2022, we were confident that we could offer programming in a more typical school year. Connecting parents was more important than ever as life started to feel normal again.

The 2022-23 school year began with the Upper School parent socials where current parents mingled with new parents and each grade grew a little closer. Then Homecoming offered a beautiful fall day filled with a variety of fun family activities. The PA supported the school’s efforts by organizing a farmers market, which included many interesting vendors offering everything from handmade pottery to baked goods. The PA also supported the event with spiritwear sales, communications, and by setting up a craft activity for middle schoolers.

Before the winter holiday break, the PA brought back a Harvey tradition — Parent Trivia Night! Senior parents were particularly enthusiastic as they recalled competing in the event years ago when their children were students in the Middle School. When we returned to campus in January, the PA introduced a new family event to help offset the winter doldrums. Our first WinterFest: A Culture Celebration was held on a Saturday afternoon, bringing together families and staff members in the athletic center to celebrate the food, the music, and other important aspects of culture. We will continue this event in January 2024. Rounding out the month of January, the PA participated in an informative DEI Workshop which focused on “Othering, Belonging and Radical Empathy.”

Throughout the school year, there were many ongoing PA activities. The PA made a big effort to recognize our wonderful teachers and staff members by providing good food … and lots of it. For Thanksgiving, families donated pies as part of our “Pies of Gratitude” collection. Our Staff Appreciation Committee then organized a wonderful Holiday Luncheon in December with a combination of catered food and items donated by families. For Valentine’s Day, families donated cookies, candy and other sweets as part of our “Cookie Palooza,” which transformed the staff room into a candy store! In March staff members received small treats in their mailboxes and we wrapped up the year with a catered lunch during Teacher Appreciation Week in May, which included delicious Greek food.

Taking it to the great outdoors, the Harvey Hikes group spent quality time in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation where parents hiked together, often with their canine companions. During the course of the year, the PA Book Club read five books together and enjoyed Latin fusion cuisine after reading the Cuban story, Next Year in Havana.

The PA also held regular PA meetings on campus to bring important school matters to the attention of our parent community. One of our meetings included school counselor, Jacquie Butera, and learning specialist, Danielle Meyer, who gave an outstanding presentation on social media. We also had an informative PA meeting in November, which highlighted our school’s strong international program. Together with the director of the international program, a current student from Poland was joined by his American host parents and his biological family who were visiting. At each meeting we made sure to have administrators available to answer any questions brought forward by parents.

Throughout the year, the PA also provided valuable support to our athletics and arts programs where parent boosters organized awards; assisted school administrators, coaches and team parents; promoted the programs on social media; and organized end-of-year/season dinners.

In April, the PA, in collaboration with the Development Office, threw an 80’s party like no other for our annual Spring Celebration fundraiser. The athletics center was completely transformed and 240 parents, faculty, staff, and alumni came out to celebrate 80’s style. Once again, our community was exceedingly generous and went above our fundraising goals, raising $250,000

On b ehalf of the PA, we would like to thank everyone for contributing to our school this year by sharing your time, creativity, talents and generous donations. We are grateful for so many dedicated parent volunteers and donors who made the year a big success.

Kind regards,

Why I Give Linda Holden-Bryant P’24

Linda Holden-Bryant and Jay Bryant joined the Harvey community in September 2020, when their son Ian joined the school as a ninth-grade student.

With over fifteen years of volunteer experience in independent schools, Linda has a deep understanding of school operations, particularly the importance of development and philanthropy. Whether supporting Harvey’s fundraising efforts as a member of the Cornerstone Campaign Committee, or helping to plan and execute events like the Spring Celebration, Linda prides herself on creating an atmosphere of fun, creativity, and community engagement. Did we mention she is also a big supporter of Ian’s athletic endeavors? Linda is known and beloved for her competitive cheering and Harvey spirit on Stark Field during football and rugby games.

This past spring, Linda co-chaired the 2023 Spring Celebration, “Don’t Stop Believing.” The event was a

“blast from the past” as attendees were transported back to the ’80s. The night was filled with surprises and successfully raised $250,000 for The Harvey Fund. The same team of parent volunteers has already begun planning the 2024 Spring Celebration, which is sure to be another success. This year, Ian’s senior year, Linda is also generously dedicating her time and fundraising talent to serve on the 2024 Senior Class Gift committee.

Linda says that she is involved at Harvey because it is important for children to see their parents personally invested in the growth and success of their school. Becoming actively involved at Harvey has been unexpectedly transformative for the Bryant family and Linda has made some wonderful friends along the way. She invites all Harvey parents to join her in any way possible — large or small. Linda, we are truly grateful for all your time and commitment to Harvey, and most importantly, thank you for the positive energy you share with those who surround you.

Parent Association Event

Co-chairs Linda Holden-Bryant P’24 and Valerie Nelson P’22, ’24 chaired this year’s “Don’t Stop Believing” Spring Celebration, which transported guests back to the rad ’80s.

The Fenstermacher Athletic Center was transformed into an ’80s time capsule through the extraordinary vision and finesse of Deanna Marano P’25. Gina Larson-Stoller P’28 prepared ’80s-themed communications that made sure the Harvey community was prepped and primed for the evening’s festivities, which included an exquisite menu prepared by Chef Suchada and her FLIK team, a DJ spinning ’80s hits, and a gnarly duo of breakdancers who opened up the floor as attendees took their cue from Whitney Houston and “danced the night away.”

Everyone came dressed in the spirit of the ’80s and enjoyed bidding on both live and silent auction items throughout the evening. Through the generosity of the Harvey community, we raised $250,000 to benefit our students and school. This year’s event was truly the capstone to our year of “Imagining the Possibilities.”

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped with the benefit planning and execution, as well as the wine pull and set-up and break-down of the event! We understand how important parent/guardian volunteers are to the success of Harvey, and we truly value the time and commitment you and your families dedicate to this wonderful community.

We’re looking forward to next year’s Spring Celebration April 20, 2024!
