Thanks to our Parents Association Volunteers Having served as the President of the Parents Association for the past two years has been an honor and a privilege. I will always treasure the time I spent at Harvey and the lifelong friends I’ve made along the way. I would like to thank all of the individuals who have volunteered and made my job look easy. It is truly astounding to me how a small group of volunteers can magically create so many wonderful events for Harvey parents and students. Take it from me, there is no way any of this could happen without the talent and dedication of our parent body. From the bottom of my heart, thanks to each and every one of you! I know you are all in great hands with the new PA President, Vivien Levy, and I wish you all the best as Harvey celebrates its Centennial. Always, Debbie Finkel, Outgoing Parents Association President

All About Endowment A school endowment is a pool of funds, often donated, and invested for the purpose of generating consistent interest income for the institution. It is a vital resource and supports a variety of purposes within the school’s operating budget. Headmaster Fenstermacher often says, “It is the gift that keeps on giving.” Harvey’s endowment has grown to almost $3.8 million as of June 2015. Within the endowment, there are restricted and unrestricted funds. To discuss how individual or family interests may match a need at Harvey, please contact the Development Office.
General Endowment Funds unresticted funds
The Ronald Duncan Trust was established in 1991 by a former teacher, Ronald Duncan, who left a bequest to Harvey in his will. Trustees outside the School are entrusted to remit to Harvey 5% annually of fair market value. restricted funds
The Rose Baldwin Reading Center Fund was established in 2013 in honor of former teacher Rose W. Baldwin to create a permanent place in the Harvey library where students can continue to be inspired by the literature and books she so loved.

This mural was created as a collaborative project with students who were directly involved in every aspect of its creation. The class chose to celebrate the arts, expressing themselves completely with the randomness qualities of collage, working in a similar fashion to, Romare Bearden, an artist we used as an inspiration for this project.

Ways of Giving to Harvey Parents, past parents, alumni, faculty and grandparents can demonstrate their commitment to The Harvey School with contributions of many kinds:
Annual Fund Every year, the Annual Fund drive raises funds to support daily operations and help balance the budget. These funds make it possible for The Harvey School to attract and retain an outstanding faculty, to support the academic program, to provide tuition assistance to some of our families, and much more. Annual support helps to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and total instructional expenses (approximately $3,000 per student). Gifts to the Annual Fund are outright gifts which are fully deductible for income tax purposes. These gifts can be made in three ways: Cash is the simplest way to give and goes to work immediately for students and teachers. Checks and credit cards are the common way to give. Appreciated securities enable the donor to take a tax deduction on the full value of the gift and avoid capital gains on the transfer. In many instances, the real cost to the donor is far less than writing a check. Matching gift contributions from employers total nearly $60,000 each year. Please verify whether your employer or your spouse’s employer has such a program. If so, donors will be credited with the total combined gift in Harvey’s Annual Report.
Events Every year, the Parents Association sponsors an auction which is held in the spring. In addition to being a wonderful way to meet new friends and get involved, last year’s benefit, Harvey Uncorked was a tremendous success and helped to provide support for Harvey’s Educational Excellence Programs. Each family is asked to participate in some way.
Planned Gifts These gifts include bequests, charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance, real estate or other tangible property. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, a planned gift may not only greatly benefit The Harvey School, but may also provide significant tax savings for the donor.
Bequests & Wills This gift is an important asset in planning for the future. Bequests can take many forms, including a specific dollar amount or a portion of what remains of an estate after obligations to others are fulfilled. Donors may receive generous tax reductions for themselves and their heirs by naming The Harvey School as a beneficiary of an estate or trust. Unrestricted bequests are particularly welcomed since they provide flexibility to the School’s trustees to use the gift in whatever way is needed most. However, we recognize that many donors have specific interests that they want to encourage and support.
8
Gifts for specific purposes should be described as broadly as possible. For example, a donor may want to leave a gift restricted for scholarships, faculty support or a particular program. The donor’s attorney or estate planner as well as a Harvey School representative should be consulted to accommodate individual circumstances.
Charitable Trusts These are two popular ways to invest in The Harvey School’s future. Charitable remainder trusts place assets in trust for the benefit of the School, while a fixed percentage of the trust or annuity is paid out to the donor, a family member or other beneficiary. The donor may choose to have income paid for the life of a beneficiary or for a certain number of years. At the end of this time, these assets are transferred to The Harvey School. Charitable lead trusts are established by transferring cash or other assets to a trustee, who invests the amount transferred and pays income to Harvey for a period designated by the donor. When the trust terminates, the principal is transferred to a donor’s children or grandchildren at what may be significant gift and estate tax savings.
John G. Davis ’50 loved Harvey, noting, “I received an outstanding education and have always felt beholden to the spirit and guidance of the school. The Harvey experience remains far more important to me than my later schools and shaped who I have become.” John established a Charitable Remainder Trust with Harvey as one of the beneficiaries. Upon his death, the school was notified that his bequest amounted to a six-figure donation. With the Davis family’s love of and involvement in tennis, his bequest was used to fund the six new tennis courts at the school.
Alumni Memorabilia Alumni are also encouraged to send Harvey any school memorabilia they may have. This could be in the form of photos, school publications (Rambler, yearbooks, etc.), articles from their school years, athletic or academic awards, or any personal mementos. (Original photographs can be returned once they are copied, if requested.)

Total Charitable Giving
2014–2015
Annual Fund (Unrestricted & Restricted)...................................................................................................... $600,000 Thank you to our Co-Chairs Mike Scarsella, Mark Nadler and Charlene Bocklet and their team of volunteers for another strong annual fund year. We reached 90% parent participation and 100% faculty and staff participation. This support along with the Benefit proceeds comprises over 8% of the School’s operating budget and directly supports faculty salaries, tuition assistance and new programs. Each year, the entire Harvey family is asked to contribute to the annual fund. While unrestricted support is preferred, some gifts are allocated for a specific purpose. Thanks to the efforts of Class Gift Chairs Stephanie King and Kim Latham, our 8th grade class gift ($8,000) will provide funds for new outdoor picnic tables, benches, soccer goals and a storage shed for the playground at the Middle School. Finally, the Click-N-Save program continues to bring revenue to the school through Amazon on-line purchases made by the Harvey community. These funds are earmarked for new Athletic Center equipment and furnishings. The Parents Association’s annual benefit, Harvey Uncorked, was one of this year’s highlights and raised almost $200,000 for Harvey’s programs. Held for the second time in our new Athletic Center, the event brought parents, faculty, alumni and staff together for an unforgettable evening with restaurant samplings from many local venues. A special thanks to Co-Chairs Debra Alexander and Suzanne Pope and their amazing committees for a magical evening of fun and dancing.
Cornerstone for the Future—Campaign......................................................................................................... $809,000 The final project for this campaign was the building of six tennis courts. Construction began in the spring of 2015 and the courts will be finished this fall. Thanks to a generous bequest from John G. Davis, class of 1955, total fundraising for the courts has reached $457,000. Many thanks to Board Vice Chair Phil Bowers ’70 and Trustee Liz Schwartz for their work on this campaign which closed in September 2015. Last year, the campaign received significant support from a few Harvey parents who helped to close this fundraising effort so that we can move to the next phase of Harvey’s Master Plan. A Campus Master Planning Committee has been busy identifying future building needs and sequencing of projects.
Centennial Endowment Campaign.................................................................................................................. $208,000 Planning for the School’s Centennial began last year with a trustee-led effort to raise funds for Harvey’s endowment. This Campaign runs from July 1, 2014 through June 30 2017. The Barry Fenstermacher Fund for Financial Aid was established to honor our Headmaster’s 30 years of service while providing critical funds for families that qualify for need based tuition grants. A top priority of the Centennial Committee is to double the number of alumni contributors. Many thanks to our Centennial alumni Co-Chairs, Jackie ’03 and Evan Walker ’03 and Dennis Dilmaghani ’62 for their guidance and support of our Alumni Centennial activities. Senior Class Gift—With the leadership of Class Parents Anita Bae and Joani Grodin, this class raised funds for a two-part class gift: to establish the 2015 Scholarship Fund and to build a patio outside The Walker Center for the Arts. Four leadership families provided a $75,000 challenge to the rest of the class which resulted in $150,000 being added to the endowment to support our financial aid program.

2015 Senior Class Gift
Class Co-Chairs Anita Bae and Joani Grodin present Headmaster Fenstermacher with the 2015 senior class gift A tradition began 14 years ago when the senior class was looking for additional ways to say “thank you” to The Harvey School. Senior class gifts have now literally transformed the way the Harvey campus looks and functions. In addition, the endowment has grown by approximately $450,000, thanks to the vision from recent classes. There have always been two components to the senior class gift: one part allocated for the endowment—specifically to support financial aid—and one part a more tangible and visible project chosen by students, parents and the administration. Last year, the Student Council was instrumental in choosing the patio that was added to the front of The Walker Center for the Arts. This new space allows for outdoor student programming as well as provides a relaxing place for students to study and relax. In addition, four families created a challenge, totaling $75,000, to continue to build the endowment in support of financial aid. With leadership from the Class Chairs, Anita Bae and Joani Grodin, another $75,000 was raised from the rest of the senior class totaling $150,000. This generosity will provide meaningful support to families who could not otherwise afford a Harvey education and play a key role in maintaining the diversity that is so key to the student body. A plaque is hung in The Walker Center for the Arts bearing each student’s name in recognition of this special class. Thank you to all who participated in this wonderful tradition - the Senior Class Gift! Past tangible gifts include: Class of 2014 colorful furniture and seating for the Walker Center Gallery Class of 2013 equipment for Fitness Center Class of 2012 construction of Athletic Center lobby Class of 2011 new bleachers and softball field Class of 2010 solar panels on Carter Hall roof Class of 2009 parking lot beautification
