HARVEY’S NEWEST COMMON GROUND
By Logan Kreisberg
To any juniors and seniors walking around school and wondering why herds of first-years are clumped together with them at various places on campus, you are probably witnessing the genesis of Harvey’s newest class. Common Ground is a required interdisciplinary course for ninth graders to understand their place in their communities and the world
This class is taught by a wide range of faculty across departments, and it combines multiple academic disciplines together. According to Harvey’s Upper School course catalog, “Through elements of science, literature, the arts, and history, this nature-centered course provides students with the opportunity to experience, question, and create ”
The Pulse reached out to all eight faculty members currently teaching the course to gain a better understanding of Common Ground’s curriculum According to Mr Saltz, “This class is important because it combines English, art, and science, and it is taught by three teachers who have different styles but a shared goal and shared values.” Additionally, Mr. Saltz said this class is unique to Harvey because the course “makes a concerted effort to create a sense of fellowship amongst students and also a sense of connection within the school itself in a physical way
The curriculum fosters a sense of community by taking advantage of Harvey’s surroundings. It is common in the class for teachers to assign individual or group coursework that relates to observations the students make during the school day. For example, on a trip to Westmoreland Sanctuary, first-years learned about orienteering with maps and compasses while hiking across the nature preserve
The class has also been a hit among teachers. Art teacher Ms. Nokes shared, “As a teacher of Common Ground, I get to work closely with two colleagues each day. I am not alone in the art classroom. Instead, I am trying to find connections or new ways of doing things that can highlight ways that art interacts with other subjects ” Ms Nokes also conveyed her enjoyment of bouncing ideas off her coteachers “I get to see the ways they think about how to plan the class periods, which enriches my teaching life.”

“¡Hola, clase!” is what students hear when they walk into the classroom Dr Lily Ryan, Harvey’s new Spanish teacher, emphasizes the importance of Spanish greetings, a recurring theme on exams
Although it is her first year at Harvey, Dr. Ryan has much previous teaching experience During her time as an assistant professor of Spanish at Penn State, Dr. Ryan delved into modern Latin American film and media studies, with a specific focus on auteur movies Coming from that large educational institution, she was excited to join Harvey’s interactive community, where teachers have strong connections with students
Dr Ryan received her undergraduate Spanish and Latin American Studies degree from New York University During her junior year of college, she studied abroad in Buenos Aires and later spent her summers in Mexico City during graduate school

ARE ORIGINAL MOVIES DYING? THE RISE
THE PULSE | OCTOBER 2024 ISSUE
OF FRANCHISES IN HOLLYWOOD
By Benji Cutler
Since the film industry took a huge blow due to COVID-19, Hollywood has made its way back to its usual success over the past three years With smash hits like “Barbie,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and most recently “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it is undeniable that consumers are still making their way to movie theaters day in and day out.
Yet, there has been a pattern in the movies being released throughout the 21st century, and it has become quite obvious by now to even the average moviegoer Originality and creativity are lacking in the film industry, and large corporate studios like Warner Bros. and Disney have relied on franchises, sequels, and intellectual property, or IP, to bring in revenue
As reported by IMDb, of the 20 highest-grossing films of 2023 and the 20 highest-grossing films of 2024 at the worldwide box office, only four were not part of a franchise, based on a book, video game, historical event, or another piece of IP. Taking a step back, only two of the top 25 highestgrossing movies of the entire 21st century were original ideas Those two films are “Avatar” and “Frozen,” which have both become the first films in billion-dollar franchises.
Thus, the majority of movies that are evidently bringing consumers to the theaters are big-budget popcorn flicks that are based on a previous piece of media However, studios are taking the wrong messages from this pattern and are now putting all of their eggs into the wrong basket
These billion-dollar companies believe that financial success in Hollywood comes solely from borrowed nostalgia and endless fan service. In other words, producers take a preexisting idea that they know already has an established fanbase and think that no matter what is in the movie itself, it will put the most consumers in seats as possible These are the takeaways that studios are observing from the recent box office trends, yet they do not match the desires of movie fans worldwide
At the end of the day, people want to see authentic human ideas put on screen, whether they are part of a franchise or not In fact, the most successful films based on IP at the box office are often the ones that are full of emotion, meaning, and power, like “Barbie,” “Inside Out 2,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home ” On the other hand, many IP films like “The Flash,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” and now “Joker: Folie à Deux” have bombed tremendously and lost millions of dollars at the box office recently simply because audiences did not find the films compelling
Whether a film is based on intellectual property or not does not determine how an audience member will respond to the film. Rather, the script, the direction, the acting, the storytelling, the technical work, and all the core aspects of filmmaking determine if audiences will connect with a film, its characters, and its messages. These elements may not always be what bring people to theaters specifically, but these components are what make movies special to fans worldwide
Original movies are not dead, and they never will die Even though they are not the driving force of mainstream Hollywood like they used to be, these movies remain to be some of the most beloved films coming out today, both by audiences and critics Not to mention, original films, usually with realistic budgets, actually tend to profit more at the box office than massive franchise films with excessively high budgets of often over $100 million
Just two years ago, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a fully original A24 movie about an Asian middle-aged laundromat owner traveling through the multiverse, wowed movie fans and became the highest-grossing film that A24 has ever produced with a worldwide gross of over $140 million Since the film cost about $25 million, the film profited phenomenally well, grossing over five times the amount of money spent on the movie.
The incredibly unique film astonished audiences with its phenomenal heart, absurd humor, and insanely creative visuals, garnering over 1 2 million perfect five-star ratings and an average score of 4 3 stars on Letterboxd Furthermore, the movie proved to impress critics as it picked up seven Academy Awards at the 2023 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Director
Similarly, the 2019 South Korean original film “Parasite” became the first foreign language film to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars, picking up Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, as well The film is also the ninth highest-rated film of all time on Letterboxd, with an average rating of 4.6 stars and almost 1 7 million five-star ratings Most impressive of all, the film cost about $12 million and earned over $250 million at the global box office, resulting in a profit of over 20 times the budget.
Stills from "Titanic," "The Dark Knight," "Barbie," "Avatar" and "Avengers: Infinity War," some of the highest grossing films of all time Graphic from deadline com
These two films are universally known to be two of the greatest films of the 21st century, and there are endless more examples of fully original films that stand both as beloved pieces of cinema and sources of substantial profit for film studios Not only are original movies still alive, but they are also more appreciated by movie fans across the nation as they have become rarities in Hollywood.
The next step in making original movies a staple in Hollywood as they once were is for these huge studios to realize that people will go to theaters and see their movies if they have something to say, regardless of whether fans have prior knowledge of the material The numbers also make it seem like franchise films and sequels make the most money, but it is usually the smaller-budget films with original ideas that make the most profit and net gross for the studios
Original movies are dying from the minds of Hollywood executives who solely believe that intellectual property results in box office success and critical and audience acclaim. Yet, it has been proven time and time again that movie lovers do not care if a film is original or not in terms of being associated with an IP People care if a film has original and authentic ideas that pack emotion, meaning, and enjoyment If studios open their eyes to what audiences truly want and begin to realize which films are actually the most successful in the box office, original movies can and will make a return into the spotlight.

STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS
To Our Great Student Body,
First, we would like to sincerely thank each and every one of our voters who made this victory possible. It is truly humbling that so many of you chose us to be your voice. We would also like to extend our congratulations to the other candidates who ran for office, and we hope to see them continue their involvement in our community Now is the time for all of us to come together and embrace the vision that will help our school
This is not the victory of Ted and Jackson but instead the victory of all of us students who want to see our school prosper like never before. There is a lot of progress to be made and not much time, so we will get to work as fast as possible. You all gave us power to actually do something, and we intend to wield Student Council like a hammer, striking against anything that gets in the way of our students having the school that they deserve
In the coming weeks, the Student Council will see a full rebuild New positions will be created so we can have the best and brightest students to make sure we leave behind a legacy of success. Secretary and treasurer will be appointed from among those whom you elected as grade reps. As a show of faith, we will avoid appointing seniors to either of these positions We are presidents of the whole school, and we want the whole school to have a voice in important decisions
To our senior class, we promise that your final year at Harvey will be saved with fun events planned throughout It is our last year of high school, and we intend to make it a great one
To our junior class, we promise we will get you off campus so you can enjoy freedom with all your friends And to our sophomores and ninth graders, we promise that we will treat your grades the same as our own. Again, we are presidents of the entire school, and we intend to unite every single student.
We are committed to accomplishing every single one of our promises: Town Halls, a renegotiation of the phone rule, off-campus privileges, more athletic promotion, field trips, and raising the budget will be top priorities for us
Furthermore, we will not stop there, as we will push to make a mark on this school that will last long after all of us graduate. Creating a Student Bill of Rights is a project near and dear to our hearts. For our vision to work, everyone needs to be treated with respect, and our program would ensure the student body gets that respect On the other hand, we hope to install an honor code to encourage our students to behave in a way that earns them this treatment
As a school, we have a responsibility to create the next generation of Americans. We don't want to limit Student Council to solely school issues but hopefully inspire our students to be productive members of society To accomplish this goal, we want to invest time and effort into not just making us better learners but better people, as well
We look forward to working with teachers, students, and administration to accomplish these goals These three groups should not stand in opposition to each other, but unite under the Harvey banner to make our school greater than it ever has been. The right arm cannot fight the left while the head stands in the crossfire. We are one body, and we are all Harvey.
As your presidents, we will tackle all the issues present on our campus. We will make the right changes at Harvey, because that's what you elected us to do We are very excited for the new era coming, and we hope you are, too
Sincerely,
Your Student Body Presidents Ted Clement & Jackson Saccomanno
Since then, she has pursued her travels throughout Spanishspeaking countries by exploring Bolivia, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and backpacking through Spain for three weeks. She reflects on the impact the language has had on her life, as she tells The Pulse how she met her two best friends – one from Madrid, the other from Venezuela – through study abroad.
From childhood, she never doubted her future career as a Spanish teacher “I always loved Spanish classes,” she said. “I really liked to travel, so when I was in college and I completed my Spanish major, I was able to travel a lot.”
With an Irish mother and American father, Dr Ryan came from a diverse background, with most of her relatives residing in County Louth, Ireland
After growing up in Palisades, New York, with her parents, an older sister, and two younger brothers, Dr Ryan has returned to the New England area to live in Connecticut She began taking Spanish in the sixth grade, and all her siblings also caught on to the language quickly, although they did not pursue it.
Emphasizing Latin American culture in her lessons, she sometimes teaches history about countries’ backgrounds

THE PULSE | FALL 2024 ISSUE
Passionate about the arts, she recommends Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón’s movies and Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges’ short stories.
For students interested in becoming fluent in another language, Dr Ryan recommends, “There are two important things about becoming fluent in Spanish One is that you’re patient. It can be kind of intimidating to hear words that you don’t know for the first time or see complicated grammar.” In class, Dr Ryan stresses conducting her classes in Spanish, so students get into the habit of colloquial conversation in the foreign language.
She adds, “The second most important thing is that you put yourself out there It’s something you learn by trying and by practicing, so you have to be willing to make mistakes You’ll have a lot of fun along the way.”
Dr Ryan emphasizes the benefits of taking a language course in the melting pot of America. “I don’t think there’s any career in the world, especially not in the U S , where a second language does not benefit you,” she says Forbes Magazine states that second to Mexico, the U.S. has one of the largest populations of Spanish speakers in the world.
Whether it means helping to translate for a foreigner or bagging a job due to bilingual education, there are many benefits to high school language classes Reflecting on the professional world, Dr Ryan highlights how Spanish is often applied to other fields of study. History and political science, for example, can intertwine the international studies of South and Central America
Outside the classroom, Dr Ryan spends her time creatively. She can be found making beeswax candles, developing photos in her bathroom, and playing with her dog, Tommy. Another passion of hers includes photography, dabbling in the professional area, but also taking personal pictures of travel scenery She adds, “An interesting fact about me is that I was once an extra in a Hollywood production because I lived in California for a year ”
A dynamic individual, Dr. Ryan is driven in all aspects of her life Starting from a clean slate in both Spanish and photography, she became a professional at both pursuits She is a perfect example for students who hope to advance in a subject they just began learning
When The Pulse interviewed students, some shared their disappointment about certain art electives not fitting into their schedules. For example, many hoped to take standard art classes (such as Painting and Drawing or Studio Art) or more courses in the performing arts
However, there are still many aspects of the curriculum that students are enjoying Ninth grader Sophie Frankel shared her positive experience, stating, “I do wish we had electives, but I also enjoy Common Ground. It's refreshing having the opportunity to go outside more, rather than sit inside all day ”
In addition to the break in the academic day, students have also appreciated the journaling element of the class Ninth grader Nate Wagner stated, “The teachers give you the option to write or draw if writing isn’t your strong suit ” Even though these journals are graded for effort, the creative elements of this class make its course load feel lighter compared to other academic classes
The class functions in similar ways as an elective while also being a part of the ninth grade core curriculum The Pulse predicts that the interdisciplinary nature of Common Ground will provide students with a strong foundation that will serve them well in their last three years of high school.

THE NOVA FESTIVAL EXHIBITION: ‘WE WILL DANCE AGAIN’
The Nova Festival Exhibition is an in-depth remembrance of the lives lost at the Nova Music Festival on Oct 7, 2023. The installation ran in New York City from May 23 to June 22, and in Los Angeles through Oct 8, 2024
The exhibition was created by the Tribe of Nova Foundation, a group that was established following the events of the October attacks in Israel. In the past year, the foundation has worked to aid and empower those who were affected by this ambush
When entering the installation, visitors chronologically travel through the events of Oct 7 Starting with a video that captures the beginning of the festival, the tone of the exhibit quickly goes from lighthearted to devastating After this initial recording, visitors then walk into a room filled with dirt on the floor, cars and camping grounds burnt to a crisp, and videos of festival goers being violently beaten and captured by members of Hamas
By Logan Kreisberg
While entering this area of the exhibition, many describe the feeling of being transported to that fateful day 51-year-old Rachel Schneider visited the New York City-based installation in June 2024 and recalled, “being at the Nova Exhibition made me feel like I was actually there. From the temperature of the room, to the video footage, the cellphones, the tents, the cars, the porta potties, the clothing, the books, the stuffed animals, the toiletry bags; absolutely everything It was the most unbelievable exhibit I have ever experienced in my lifetime.”
Visitors recall viewing footage of chaos and panic conveyed by firsthand accounts of the festival. The installation intentionally contrasted videos of Israeli civilians being forced to take cover with Hamas marching to Nova while chanting anti-Israel rhetoric When Hamas troops arrived at the festival, the accounts of civilians changed; festival goers were no longer hiding from the soldiers, but rather being assaulted or taken hostage.
After watching these videos, visitors were then escorted to a section of the exhibition that reflected on the lives lost and hostages that were taken on Oct. 7. The Nova Foundation ensured these people were featured by including their names, age, and pictures
Next to this collection was a gift shop where visitors could purchase Nova apparel and Israeli dog tags Most of the memorabilia included graphics that stated “We Will Dance Again” and “Bring them Home,” two sayings that serve as symbols for solidarity, as well as hope for the release of the hostages in Gaza. According to the installation's official website, all proceeds will go to the Tribe of the Nova Foundation to continue their efforts in providing aid to Oct 7 survivors
After taking all of this information in, Schneider stated, “I walked out of the exhibit at a loss for words It's so hard to imagine how such a beautiful, spiritual event turned into one of the biggest atrocities and losses of lives in our lifetime Walking through it, seeing people’s belongings, being able to touch the things they left behind truthfully made me physically ill. It made it so much more real that these beautiful human beings were dragged away from their lives by such monsters while they were dancing and loving their lives in such a beautiful way.”
When Caroline D’Amore, founder and CEO of Pizza Girl Inc , visited the exhibit, she had a different takeaway. D’Amore explains that after walking through, she feels “hopeful that there is gonna be a better understanding, more respect for survivors, and people that deserve support.”
Overall, the evocative elements of the exhibit contributed to a lasting remembrance of the October terrorist attacks in Israel Even though the exhibit is no longer accessible for people in the Harvey community due to its location change, The Pulse still recommends learning more about the events of Oct 7 and the exhibit to commemorate the lives lost during this tragedy.
INSTAGRAM’S NEW PLAYBOOK GUIDING TEENS TO A SAFER SCROLL THE PULSE | FALL 2024 ISSUE
Starting in September, Meta began unrolling new restrictions among the young age groups using Instagram. On the app, the “Tips for Parents” section states that the new “Teen Accounts are currently only available in some locations and will be introduced globally in early 2025 ” Even before these updated policies, Instagram had the rule that children must be 13 years of age or older to have the app. However, many argue that this rule has flaws, as children can lie about their year of birth.
By Daniela Rynott
Questions regarding the efficiency of the upcoming security restrictions have emerged, as Instagram has stated that all teenagers under 18 will have private accounts as a default setting However, in 2021, this same policy was instituted for adolescents under 16, and a loophole was found in which young teenagers simply could change settings to public. Instagram argues that this policy will be more effective because teens under 16 will need parental permission to change their accounts to the public setting
In a New York Times opinion article headlined “Instagram’s New Protections for Kids Don’t Go Far Enough,” Zeynep Tufekci writes, “ these new policies will have little impact on many teenagers, because the platform has not set up age verification.”
Bringing to light the popular “finstas,” or fake accounts, Tufekci argues that it will be easy for adolescents to lie about their age For teens ages 16 and 17, in addition, they have the option to reject the security settings themselves. “...Instagram’s new policy is less of a solution and more of a performance of doing something in response to public outcry,” Tufekci states
Attempting to implement safety measures in direct messages the epicenter of inappropriate social media use teenagers will not be allowed to text users with whom the following is not mutual.
Another common theme on Instagram has been accounts tagging young users in posts to grab their attention From naming themselves modeling agencies to benefactors giving out free money, kids can get caught in scams if they are not careful. Therefore, Meta is banning users from tagging people who do not follow them back
From an economic standpoint, Meta may hurt in the short term. From young influencers to the average teenager, young people make up a large portion of Instagram users Although account settings can be customized, the process of having a public account has been riddled with more steps, which will discourage some.
The popular app TikTok is also banning users under 13 from having the app, and those 13-15 years old cannot message others. Between these two sweeping changes, there has been a greater question of the effect of all social media on the youth
The New York Times states that, following numerous lawsuits, the country’s Surgeon General “called for cigarette-like warning labels on social media to indicate the potential mental health risks.” In July, “the Senate passed bipartisan legislation called the Kids Online Safety Act,” also known as KOSA, which mandates more safety features on social media to prevent explicit content and bullying.
The KOSA has received much backlash from adolescents, who say that censorship of content about self-harm and suicide can prevent the access to helpful resources However, tech companies feel a responsibility to implement these adjustments as a result of the devastating effects that social media has had on teenagers
“The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt is a book that has been growing in popularity among parents and educators, as it explores the correlation between mental health issues and social media In a Ted-Ed talk, Haidt stated that his studies have shown an increase in depression rates since 2007, the year the iPhone was released. Throughout the 2010s, when phones became commonplace for teens, rates skyrocketed to an even greater degree Although it cannot be confirmed that the two are directly related, it is interesting to note the direct relationship in evidence

CRUMBL COOKIES THE SWEETEST NEW FASHION STATEMENT
From the creative minds of two cousins with a single gourmet cookie shop in Logan, Utah and no baking experience, Crumbl Cookies was built from the ground up and has become the fastestgrowing unconventional dessert phenomenon with their eccentric flavors, flashy pink advertising, endless amounts of delectable frosting and toppings, and fresh menus of six treats rotating weekly
Founded in 2017 by Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley, Crumbl has grown into a celebrity-like giant in the food industry with more than 15 million followers on TikTok and Instagram combined, almost 1,000 locations across the United States, and collaborations with Oreo, Reese’s, M&M’s, new hit movies like “Wonka” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and even megastars like Kylie Jenner and Olivia Rodrigo
These cookies that are the size of a human hand have stamped their spot in today’s society as a trendy, decorated sweet treat to share with friends and family every week. However, some issues facing the business have slowly been coming to the surface and stirring controversy in the public
By Benji Cutler
As a stylistic cookie shop with frosting and toppings galore, the caloric counts and sugar intakes were bound to get out of control Yet, what specifically frustrated consumers was the blatant false advertising seen on Crumbl’s website concerning the number of calories per cookie When promoting the cookies on the homepage, a calorie quantity ranging from 50 to 250 was placed below each product, but with a tiny asterisk
This asterisk led to a hardto-find indication that these calorie counts only referred to the serving sizes, which is a quarter of a cookie Therefore, the actual number of calories was four times the amount displayed in the front and center of the website, which realistically ranges between 700 and over 1000 calories
This misleading advertising led to confusion and frustration from many customers; for instance, as documented by AK Law ACPC Litigation, a group of former consumers from California filed a lawsuit against the company in September 2023, arguing that Crumbl purposely disclosed the full caloric count to hide health issues.
Additionally, as reported by Today.com, 11 Crumbl Cookies franchises were found to have violated child labor laws in late 2022, including overworking 14 and 15-year-old employees in six different states and letting them operate hazardous machinery
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division levied about $58,000 in penalties to the company.
There have been some other complaints from Crumbl’s customers concerning the high prices of $4 to $6 per cookie, potential plagiarism from smaller businesses, and the use of unhealthy and potentially hazardous ingredients
Yet, despite these bumps in the road, Crumbl Cookies has still won over customers across the nation and is making strong efforts to resolve these issues Concerning the child labor violations, a Crumbl representative told Today com that the company was “deeply disappointed” by this discovery and is “committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming work environment.”

Gathering the perspective of a teenage girl, The Guardian interviewed the daughter of “Anxious Nation” director Laura Morton Sevey Morton, like most girls in Generation Z, downloaded Instagram at the age of 10, and she is now noticing the toll it has taken on her life. “The San Diego High Schooler says all the airbrushed perfection and slickly edited selfies from celebrities and influencers made her hyper-focused on her appearance, causing anxiety and body image issues.”
This quotation brings to mind the question of whether Meta can decrease the effects of Instagram on mental health. Some argue that it may just be a matter of keeping the youth off these apps overall
Safeguarding our community, The Harvey School has adopted the new technology of Yondr pouches to enforce a no-phone policy during the school day Head of the School William J Knauer wrote in an email to the community, “...we believe we have a responsibility to address concerns about adolescent cellphone use and create an environment that supports both learning and student well-being Ultimately, we are confident that this change is in the best interest of our students, which is always our guiding principle ”
With limited access to smartphones, the hope is that high school students will engage more with each other and less with social media.
As Meta rolls out the restrictions on Instagram, the impact of these measures on teenagers’ mental health remains to be seen. Privacy settings and restricted messaging aims to enhance user safety, while challenges related to online age validation continue to exist. The future indefinitely holds discussions on social media’s influence on youth and the promotion of healthier interactions in digital spaces.
Across the western world, a drastic political shift appears to be underway For better or for worse, it appears the days of neoconservative politics seem to be over. In our country, the rise of MAGA has revolutionized right wing politics. However, in Europe, an even more obvious shift is taking place All across the West, it appears that nationalistic, right wing populist parties are replacing moderate conservative parties of old In this article, The Pulse will discuss why this trend is happening, why it matters to both Americans and Europeans, and what will happen next.
As Americans, we will always have ties to the United Kingdom Since we speak the same language and share a very similar culture, similarities in politics often arise.
For example, Brexit was a major win for nationalism in the West that certainly bears similarities to Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 This fact was not lost on Trump, who referred to himself as “Mr. Brexit.” The man primarily responsible for Brexit is Nigel Farage. Farage, in many ways, is the closest thing the U.K. has to a Trumpian figure “I've always been the outsider,” said Farage

FARAGE’S BARRAGE REPORTS
AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
By Ted Clement
He continued, “I've always been regarded as some extraordinarily dangerous figure I'm none of those things! I'm just a middleclass boy from Kent who likes cricket and who happened to have a strong view about a supernational government from Brussels ” The “supernational government” that Farage refers to is the European Union Farage served in the European parliament as a member of UKIP, which advocated for a withdrawal from the EU.
The Washington Post described Farage as: “A bombastic bloke who was often pictured in a pub with a pint in his hand.” His populist image and charismatic nature made him a sort of folk hero among the U K ’s populist right As his popularity grew, so did support for Brexit, which eventually led to the shock vote to leave the EU Farage would form Reform UK, a right-wing nationalist party that opposed Labour (the U.K.’s main left-wing party) and the Conservative party (a party more left wing than its name suggests).
In 2019, the Tories (a nickname for the Conservatives) would win in a landslide However, their governance could hardly be looked at as anything but a tremendous failure. The economy stagnated, COVID-19 hit, Johnson resigned under scandal, his successor Liz Truss would also resign after crashing the economy, and immigration (an issue that fuels Reform UK’s success) would rise This led to the new, unelected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak having a record low approval rating
According to YouGov, on Election Day, Sunak had an approval rating of 18%. Thus, most pundits expected the Tories to get swept in a historical landslide against Labour (a YouGov poll predicted Labour winning 422 seats to the conservatives 140) The final nail in the coffin for the Tories was the return of Farage, who declared Reform would run in the 2024 general election.
Farage, entering to Eminem's hit “Without Me,” would declare his intention "political revolt," adding, "Yes, a revolt A turning of our backs on the political status quo It doesn't work. Nothing in this country works any more." Farage would attack the Tories for their record and declare his intention to replace the Tories At the end of the day, Farage would win a seat in parliament along with four other Reform UK members
Although they did not win many seats, they did finish with 14.3% (up 12.3% from 2019) of the popular vote and finished third overall The Conservative party dipped from 42 4% in 2019 to 23 7% Despite Labour winning in a landslide, they only won 33 7% of the popular vote (up 1.3%) from 2019. It seems that Labour's landslide win has less to do with Labour's popularity and more to do with Reform stealing votes from the Tories

THE PULSE | FALL 2024 ISSUE
When addressing his crowd post victory, the newly elected Farage declared, "The political establishment are in fear in private as to what happened last night with those results in the election." And Farage does seem to be right. Tony Blair, former Labour Prime Minister, stated, “The growth of populism and the rise of the reform vote is something that he has to be aware of and make a priority.”
Ironically, it seems that despite Labour’s victory, the real winners were Reform. When asked if he would unite with the Conservatives, Farage said he would prefer to "let the Conservative Party tear themselves apart." Donald Trump posted, "Congratulations to Nigel Farage on his big WIN of a Parliament Seat amid Reform UK Election Success. Nigel is a man who truly loves his country "
So what is causing this surge to the “further right?” The answer seems to be immigration. According to fullfact.org, 2.3 million people have arrived in the U.K. in just 2022 and 2023 alone. As stated by the BBC, the number of immigrants entering the country illegally by boat has reached 23,533 people alone.
The top five countries represented by these immigrants are Afghanistan, Iran, Vietnam, Turkey, and Syria None of these countries are western, causing many to feel like their country is turning away from the values they grew up with. Since the Conservatives governed over this increase in immigration, many people shifted toward Reform UK. According to a YouGov poll, Conservative party members ranked “failure to tackle immigration” second in the reason why conservatives lost in 2024
The rise of an anti-immigrant party in the U.K. could very well serve as a parallel for what could happen in our election. Trump is running a campaign based on anti-immigrant sentiment. Even if Trump loses in November, his wing of the Republican Party will refuse to endorse any Republican who doesn’t support a hard line against immigration
For better and for worse, it seems the days of proimmigration right wing parties are over. Over the coming years, it seems more democracies across the West will see this rise in nationalism that seems to be dominating the 2024 elections both in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, Crumbl has completely redesigned its website, fixing the advertising issue of caloric counts by displaying the full nutrition information panel as a drag-down option for each treat.
Crumbl’s rapid success over the past few years and ability to keep customers loyal even through controversy may seem perplexing to some, but the company’s intelligent approach to marketing and finding ways to maintain relevance explains it all
Crumbl’s strategy to draw attention has been driven through social media, taking inspiration from the fashion industry to turn each of its cookies into pieces of art With vibrant and mouthwatering promotional videos and the help of endless positive video reviews from TikTok creators, Crumbl’s recordbreaking growth has largely come from catching the eyes of teenagers and young adults online By presenting each rotation of new flavors as a social media spectacle, Crumbl created this feeling within young consumers that they are missing out if they do not try the new flavors of the week.

DEMETRIOUS “MIGHTY MOUSE” JOHNSON RETIRES
Demetrious Johnson (aka “Mighty Mouse”), one of the greatest fighters of all time, recently announced his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) on Sept 6, 2024 at ONE 168
Johnson ended his professional career with a record of 25-4-1, and according to the ESPN website, five of those victories came by (t)ko and eight coming by submission. Throughout his career, Johnson has been a dominant force throughout his time in competitive MMA.
Growing up in Parkland, Washington, Johnson was a star athlete in track, cross country, and wrestling Johnson even went on to place third and second in the state for wrestling in his junior and senior years respectively For his accomplishments in wrestling, Johnson received scholarships to attend various institutions, yet he declined these offers so he didn’t have to leave his family behind Instead, Johnson chose to go to Pierce College for two years while working on the side, according to his profile on martialarts about com
According to mmajunkie com, Johnson started MMA purely for fun However, two years following his start in MMA, he was invited to the AMC Pankration, an MMA gym in Woodinville, Washington It was here that Johnson met Matt Hume, one of the pioneers of MMA, and in 2006, Johnson made his amateur debut winning via first-round knockout
Johnson finished his amateur career with 9 wins and 0 losses to his record, which landed him a deal with the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), where he debuted at Bantamweight. After a few fights with the WEC, the promotion merged with the UFC on Oct 28, 2010
Johnson continued to fight at bantam weight for a few fights before transitioning into flyweight at UFC 152, where he fought in a flyweight tournament to determine who would win the inaugural flyweight belt In the final, Johnson faced Joseph Benavidez, where he won by split decision to become the first flyweight champion of the UFC, according to USA Today Sports
By Connor Harrington
Johnson’s reign as Flyweight Champion lasted from 2012-2017, when he racked up 11 consecutive title defenses, the most in UFC history. Over the course of his reign as champion, he defeated notable names such as Henry Cejudo and Ray Borg.
However, while some fans would argue that the flyweight wasn’t as competitive in the early days of the division, Johnson’s skill is undeniable Everything from his boxing to his jiu-jitsu to his wrestling is incredibly technical, and he is known to have some of the best fundamentals in MMA
Despite Johnson’s once in a lifetime run as the Flyweight champion, Johnson was a largely unappreciated and undervalued champion, and in 2018 Johnson left the UFC following him losing his belt to Henry Cejudo in a split decision
While there were a few reasons for Johnson leaving the UFC, Johnson said it was due to his frustration with his low fighter pay and the lack of promotion for his fights, despite him being one of the best fighters in the UFC Due to these contract disputes, Johnson exited the UFC in a trade deal with ONE Championship for Welterweight Ben Askren
According to ESPN, Johnson made his debut in ONE Championship March 31, 2019, where he faced Yuya Wakamatsu and won by submission.
Johnson went on to win his next two fights by unanimous decision which led him to fight for the flyweight belt in 2021 against Adriano Moraes, and for the first time in Johnson’s career, he was knocked out. Regardless of the loss, Johnson was still hungry, and in a rematch the following year, Johnson claimed the flyweight belt by knocking out Moraes.

Due to the two events being exciting where both fighters showcased their strengths, ONE scheduled a third fight While Johnson did not win this fight by finish, he did control a majority of the fight, landing him a unanimous decision victory After the fight, Johnson said that it was potentially his last fight, and on Sep 6, 2024, Johnson made the official announcement
In an emotional speech in Denver, Colorado, he thanked the fans, his teammates, and his family for supporting him throughout his career. Throughout the speech, Johnson was fighting back tears and even joked, “I sound like a damn mouse.”
Shortly after, Johnson said he was not lying when he said that his last fight was potentially his last, stating, “I am done competing in Mixed Martial Arts ” At the end of his retirement speech, CEO of ONE Championship, Chatri Sityodtong, thanked Johnson and called him the greatest martial artist of all time and presented him with a trophy for the first inductee to the ONE Championship Hall of Fame

XANDER SCHAUFFELE
A NEW ERA OF DOMINANCE IN GOLF?
By Rohan Singh
Xander Schauffele has been one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour for years now, but he has historically struggled with clinching a win in major tournaments. Labeled the “most talented golfer to never win a major,” he has been known as a golfer with numerous tie-breakers but always finishing in second place. It seems Schauffele is flipping the script in 2024, putting up a historic run that’s never been seen before at the rate and pace he's playing.
In 2024, Schauffele has secured two championships so far: the PGA Championship and the Open Championship in a span of two months. This could indicate that Schauffele is finally over his second-place hump and ready to earn the title of the best golfer of 2024
In just three months, Xander Schauffele has done what many golfers on the tour have only dreamed of: claiming back-to-back major championships, making himself one of the most elite players in the game today. According to golfweek com, Xander shot a 62 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, tying the record for best single-round score ever at a major tournament.
He also became the first player to shoot a single-round 62 twice in a major event. The win was a masterclass in consistency, mental toughness, and clutch play under pressure Schauffele battled against Bryson Dechambeau, another top player in the world, but, in the end, Xander came out victorious
But Schauffele didn’t stop there. Just weeks later, he arrived at Royal Troon, Scotland and put on another incredible performance According to The Los Angeles Times, Schauffele finished with a score of 9-under-par. This not only secured his second major in a row but also silenced any doubters claiming that Schauffele is a one hit wonder He proved that his talents were here to stay, and he can perform at the highest stage of golf
Earning back-to-back wins was a statement to Schauffele’s incredible skill set but also showed his ability to perform under pressure with millions of people watching him. Beyond his strong mental game and resilience under pressure, what sets Schauffele apart is his calm vibe and aura on the course Unlike some players who may throw clubs and show frustration after a bad shot, Schauffele stays cool and composed
His sportsmanship and likable personality have earned him a lot of respect from both fans and golfers on tour. He’s not just incredibly talented in every tournament, but he’s also a genuinely great guy, making him one of the most likable golfers on the tour. In a YouTube video titled “Xander Schauffele Winner's Press Conference 2024 PGA Championship,” we can see how friendly and great he is engaging with questions and interacting with his fans.
According to the PGA Tour leadership rankings, Schauffele is on track to potentially pass Scottie Scheffler in the leaderboard as the top-ranked golfer in the world. As of Sept. 23, Scheffler holds 18.110 points, while Schauffele is closing the gap with 11 350 points With momentum on his side and confidence running high, Schauffele is emerging as a dominant figure in the sport, and the world is taking notice.
With back-to-back major victories in 2024, Xander Schauffele has solidified his status as one of the best players on the PGA Tour and has proven he is more than simply a contender His victories at Valhalla and Royal Troon silenced doubters and he has shown his ability for performing well under pressure Now that major tournaments like the Presidents Cup and CJ Cup are approaching, Schauffele is intent on surpassing Scottie Scheffler to become the world's No 1 golfer He might finish the year as the biggest name in golf if he continues at this rate.

ADRIAN NEWEY MOVING TO ASTON MARTIN THE PULSE | FALL 2024 ISSUE
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE FUTURE OF RED BULL?
Over the past few weeks and months of the Formula One (F1) season, which is from March 6, 2024, to Nov 23, 2024, there has been big news, such as Logan Sargent being released by Williams on Aug 28, 2024, and Carlos Sainz signing with Williams on July 28, 2024 Kimi Antonelli was the youngest driver on the grid for Mercedes on Aug 24, 2024 Yet, the biggest news in the past few weeks was chief designer and engineer Adrian Newey leaving Red Bull for Aston Martin for the 2026 season
Adrian Newey is a huge name in F1, and in his 44 years of being in F1, he won many constructors championships and helped gigantic names such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Riccardo, and Max Verstappen punch their way into the record books.
According to Top Gear, “Williams hired Newey as its chief designer in 1990, and alongside technical director Patrick Head, it reaped the rewards almost immediately. Riccardo Patrese’s win in Mexico in ‘91 was the first masterminded by Newey, and the team only lost the constructors’ that year thanks to poor reliability early in the season The FW14B made amends in 1992 Nigel Mansell won the first five races and never looked back, as the team stormed to both titles ” This was his first of many successes in his career.
Newey had a strong year in 2000 with McLaren when he allowed his team to win seven races and gain 22 podiums However, that was not enough to win any titles. In 2013, six years after he joined Red Bull, he had his best year, winning titles with 13 wins and 24 podiums According to the official website of F1 Sebastian Vettel, one of the most famous drivers of all time, he won all 13 races for Red Bull that season, winning nine in a row.
By Jack Amann
Many years after that huge season for Red Bull, their main young talent, Max Verstappen, came onto the grid. Verstappen was one of the best young drivers in Europe since he was 5 years old, not only racing against the older children but also driving against some of the future best F1 drivers of all time Verstappen’s father Jos also raced and worked especially hard with Newey when he acquired a job for Red Bull in 2015
In 2018, when Verstappen started racing for Red Bull, he and Newey had a strong relationship, making him the youngest driver ever to win an F1 race at 21 Due to the increase in popularity with Verstappen, Newey started to become a small name and was only mentioned when Verstappen was named.

In 2024, the car for Red Bull the RB20 was projected to be the most high-quality performing car on the grid during the season due to the gigantic changes. Racecar Engineering stated, “The eye-catching detail was in the three-part cooling system. The horizontal sidepod inlet that draws in air from the front, seemingly vanished in the renders, was hidden underneath a lip ” This modification seemed great, and Newey was thrilled ahead of the new season The 2024 F1 grid started very wide, with Max Verstappen winning the first four races of the year.
This modification seemed great, and Newey was thrilled ahead of the new season The 2024 F1 grid started very wide, with Max Verstappen winning the first four races of the year.
After the race in Spain this 2024 grid, Red Bull started to fall off, losing all top grid positions and placing as bad as P-12 and sometimes not even finishing into the top 10. Newey addressed the situation, saying, "Well, I have heard it I have to be honest I don't read the press for kind of personal reasons going back to my Leyton House days. But the reality is, I can't comment. I really can't comment, because once I'm out, I'm out,” as reported by Sports Illustrated Newey left Red Bull after this statement and signed to Aston Martin two weeks later
Red Bull has a bunch of young talent, and the departure of Newey means that most of them will leave and go to better and more competitive companies. Ferrari and Mercedes, are two examples that have made a bunch of changes in getting new and young talent because in F1 young talent is always better than the veterans
These young drivers are growing as cars and technology are growing, too, so with Red Bull not having a chief designer, they won't be able to build a competitive car for the 2025 season, which will make young talent go to teams that seem more competitive. What will the future hold for F1 due to this massive change? The only way to find out is to hit the apex and let the tires adjust

A SLICE OF NEW YORK
By Arav Shah
Many great pizzerias are within a 45-minute radius of The Harvey School. However, a couple places stand out
The first one is Joe's Pizza, specifically the Greenwich Village location At Joe's, slices start at $3 per slice. All the Joe’s pizzerias have unique tastes, but Greenwich Village is the best That is a great deal for out-of-this-world pizza! The piping hot sauce with a crispy crust but fluffy inside and the perfect sauce-to-cheese ratio is why Joe’s is so famous The best slice has to be the classic cheese slice because of its simplicity
Many people believe John’s of Bleecker Street is better than Joe’s, but I beg to differ. I think John's is too thick to be considered NY-style pizza, and the sauce-to-cheese ratio isn't there, as I compared the cheese pizzas from both places. Also, John’s of Bleecker Street comes as a pie, while you can order just a slice at Joe’s, which makes Joe’s more convenient. Joe’s has a better base than John’s, too Lastly, John’s and Joe’s both have lines, but Joe’s is quicker
The next spot is a bit unique but worth a try It’s called Hudson Oven. Located in Croton on the Hudson, it’s a sourdough bread company that makes baked goods, as well
Their pizza is only offered on Fridays, but it is a very good pie. It is more special than other pies because it's made from 100% sourdough but tastes better than most pizzas It has zero flop, it is perfectly crispy, and it is full of flavor. The pie to get is the margarita, because it's a classic, and the other pies are delicious, too
Additionally, the ratio of the tomato to cheese is perfect, so that's another reason why it’s so appealing. The pie cost $24, but it's totally worth it to splurge once in a while It’s best to preorder the pie online for a specific time to get the best results.
Another place, Pizza Vitale, has great pizza and is very different from New York style. Pizza Vitale’s crust is fluffy, with fresh mozzarella and the freshest tomato sauce It's a pizza truck located in farmers markets throughout New York, and the best way to find out where they are serving pizza is via social media The prices vary by pizza flavor
My go-tos are the margarita, a classic, and Diablo, which is great if you want to eat spicy food. The spicy one has a nice kick and elevates the flavor to its peak The service is fast, as it's a food truck
A photo of Hudson Oven’s margarita pizza.

If you're in the mood for Detroit-style pizza, Emmy Squared is for you, and it is located throughout Manhattan The inside is doughy, and the crust is very crispy The best flavor to get is whichever toppings you want on the pizzas. They are all good, no matter the topping. However, my favorite is the Classic, which costs $16 Emmy Squared is a sit-down restaurant, too
Another pizza spot in Manhattan, Rubirosa, is decent. However, you can get the same thing for a cheaper cost at Joe's Pizza Rubirosa is a bit thinner, but everything tastes exactly the same The cost of a classic pie is $28, which is overpriced. It’s still a great pie, but it's a sit-down place, so the service is slower than getting a slice at Joe’s
There are so many pizza places in New York, and it may be one of the pizza capitals of the world. There is so much variety in pizzas, going from the classic New York slice to Detroit-style pizza All of these spots should be added to your list when you’re craving some pizza!
