HOW THE ROLEX BUILDING DREAM TEAM WAS MADE

O

n the corner of Moody and North Harwood Street the new Rolex building, Harwood No. 8, is taking shape. Its windows are in place, as are the tiered terraces that will soon hold gardens and cascading waterfalls. When it opens, the seven-story building will harmonize outdoor living with modern office design, and further transform the burgeoning Dallas skyline. The New Rolex Building will also mark over 30 years since Harwood International’s (HI) first

building opened, launching what would become an 18-block eponymous district of world-class architecture. The building represents a collaboration between HDF, HCMS, Sphinx, the Rolex team and three world-renowned artists. Designed by architect Kengo Kuma, Harwood No. 8 also benefited from the landscaping techniques of Sadafumi Uchiyama and the expertise of 15th-generation stone mason Suminori Awata. The Kuma, Uchiyama and Awata trio joined the HI team to build a space

that combines the best of traditional Japanese construction with the European flair that has come to define the HARWOOD District. The trios coming together to help build the latest tower is not a coincidence. It all started in a Japanese garden in Portland. HI CEO and founder Gabriel Barbier-Mueller visited The Portland Japanese Gardens while in town for the opening of “Samurai: Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection.” Article Continued on

There he met Sadafumi Uchiyama, a thirdgeneration Japanese gardener and curator for the Portland Japanese Gardens. Uchiyama, born and trained in Japan, is a registered landscape architect in Oregon and California, with work in the U.S. and Japan. Barbier-Mueller and the HI team shared their plans for Harwood No. 8, and he came on board to help design the landscaping. Uchiyama also introduced HDF to a crucial connection: Kengo Kuma. Uchiyama met award-winning architect Kuma while he was designing the expansion of the Portland Japanese Gardens. Kuma’s architectural philosophy adapts traditional Japanese building techniques for the 21st century. Kuma’s current project, a lattice-timber stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, takes a similar approach, incorporating plants and trees on each level to blend with the nearby park. In Kuma and Uchiyama’s work, HDF found kindred spirits. When Swiss-born Gabriel BarbierMueller first developed the District, he not only built contemporary new buildings in the area, but also filled the spaces between them with gardens and pocket parks reminiscent of his European childhood. The Marie Gabrielle Gardens, a 1.5-acre green space, won Harwood International the Trammell Crow Urban Forestry Award for helping beautify the Dallas environment. It helps that HI is a fully integrated firm able to develop, construct and design all in one. It is a one-stop shop that puts a personal touch on every project through strong attention to detail. Kuma and Uchiyama were able to work in close collaboration with the entire HI team and rely on its resources and knowledge of Dallas. The new Rolex Building is the first office building in Dallas to be designed by a Japanese architect. Uchiyama, in addition to working on No. 8, is the landscape architect for HI’s new residential high-rise, Bleu Ciel. The ideas of designer and developer began to intersect, and another Portland Garden artist was soon added to the fold.

Internationally-acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma is well-known for his use of wood and recently did the expansion of the Portland Japanese Garden. Currently, Kuma is also working on Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Stadium.

At the base of the building, a stone wall gently slopes upward, a medieval complement to No. 8’s tiered gardens. It is the handiwork of Suminori Awata. Kuma made the introduction to Awata, whose family members have been stone masons for over 300 years, and who designed the castle wall at the Portland Japanese Gardens. No. 8’s wall brings the hillside ramparts of Japan to Texas.

exchange.

The stone wall was another artistic touch to a development project that opened the door for a new way of looking at commercial building design, one that embraces traditionalism and balance while offering a modern feel. Harwood No. 8 holds not only the history of the District, but also was built on a foundation of cultural

Harwood International, HDF, and HCMS team with Kengo Kuma, Suminori Awata, and Rolex teams.

Between Kuma’s team, Uchiyama and Awata, Harwood No. 8’s construction maintained the integrity of Japanese building techniques. This past March, HI held a Joutoushiki ceremony to celebrate the construction of the structure of the building and to thank the team for their work.

INAUGURAL HOPE FEST BENEFIT CONCERT IS A GREAT SUCCESS On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Harwood International hosted the first annual Hope Fest: Live from HARWOOD at Happiest Hour to support three nonprofit organizations: Cornerstone Achievement Center, Love Like You Mean It, and Connecting Point of Park Cities. Through the generosity of 30 sponsors along with more than 500 guests and donors, Hope Fest raised over $230,000 in its inaugural year. Proceeds will be used to support the unique initiatives of each organization, which includes funding education, advocacy, and support for individuals with special needs in addition to efforts to eradicate the trafficking of young girls and women in India. When Happiest Hour opened its doors, guests made donations to win one of the many impressive raffle items including diamond jewelry 4

Enjoying special bites and new menu features from Happiest Hour, guests continued to mingle until event chairs Katelyn and Oliver BarbierMueller took the stage for welcoming remarks and an introduction of the first act, Michael Lee & The Wartime Limousines.

committee members including: Katherine Helms; Katlin and Zach James; Laura Reeder; Skyler and Robbie Baty; Meghan Looney; Stefanie and Michael Prentiss; and more. As members of the executive host committee, the following BarbierMueller family members were in attendance: Gabriel Barbier-Mueller; Niña and Trevor Tollett; and Alexis and Bridget Barbier-Mueller.

As the night progressed, Cas Haley, the 2007 runner-up on “America’s Got Talent,” took the stage to perform hit songs for the Hope Fest crowd. Next up was the headlining act Josh Weathers, a local Fort Worth artist and founder of the charity Love Like You Mean It. Weathers captivated the audience with his bluesy, soulful voice and plenty of skillful musical showmanship.

Hope Fest thanks the sponsors including The TOT, Sewell, Haynes and Boone, Jim Beam, and Cristina and Harry Lynch, along with many others whose generosity are helping make a local and global impact. WINE FLIGHTS AT SAINT ANN The debut of an all-new wine program is in session at Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar. A world tour for your senses, the restaurant’s revamped book of wine features representations from more than five renowned regions including New Zealand and Spain. With so many fresh options, Saint Ann also presents four curated wine flights that are well suited for both wine connoisseurs and new wine explorers alike. THE NERD Scents and notes of this wine flight are best described as intricate and interesting. The valedictorian of this flight is certainly the Impatience Rosé from Provence, France which is exclusive to the wine flight menu only. SCHOOL’S OUT This flight is perfect for a new student of wine. With an overall balance that is very light, the School’s Out flight features three highly approachable wines by Crowded House, Van Duzer, and Duckhorn. PROM QUEEN Bookended by two popular California selections, A by Acacia and Charles Krug, it’s the middle glass of the flight that heightens the appeal of the Prom Queen even more. Take your palette on a trip to Spain with the Emilio Moro Tempranillo, perfect to pair with Saint Ann’s signature 8 oz. Certified Angus Filet. THE OVERACHIEVER Just one sip of this wine flight and you’ll know where it gets its name. The most dynamic and powerful of all the wine flights, The Overachiever even doubles as an appetizer. Spiced almonds, olives, and Manchego cheese perfectly complement the ZD Chardonnay, Belle Glos “Las Alturas,” and Stags’ Leap Winery Petite Sirah.

HAPPY HOUR AROUND HARWOOD From sangria filled nights to happy hour delights, the District is bursting with new cocktails and specials to whet your whistle. Happy hour gets the grade at the former-school-turnedrestaurant, Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar. Try one of the new wine flights like The Overachiever, which comes with an assortment of bites. Or sit back and relax on the patio and indulge in a selection of menu favorites for just $6. Heading to a game or a concert over at the American Airlines Center? Get your night started right at Happiest Hour to enjoy drink specials from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Enjoy up to $3.50 off on specialty cocktails, some of which are inspired by the Dallas home teams, like the refreshing Stars Green Envy. SAMURAI EXHIBIT TRAVELS FROM PARIS TO LAS VEGAS

Photo courtesy of The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection has been selectively amassed by Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller and their children over the past 25 years. Centuries of craftsmanship are represented in the collection, with objects dating from the seventh to nineteenth centuries. Samurai masterpieces, including suits of armor, helmets, masks, horse armor, and weaponry are on display in the Museum in the District. A portion of the collection is currently touring the globe in a traveling exhibition consisting of 140 objects that has been seen by over 1.3 million visitors worldwide since 2011. Since September of this year, the exhibition made its way from Le Grand Palais in Paris all the way to the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Samurai: Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection features objects that were used both for combat and ceremonial purposes. The pieces convey the complete story of the samurai, a part of the intellectual Japanese elite who not only fought in battle, but also practiced poetry and calligraphy.

so rich in tradition, history, and creativity unlike anything we’ve debuted before at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art.”

La Biennale des Antiquaires Paris, one of Europe’s most prominent art fairs, featured over 100 galleries from all over the globe showcasing their best pieces. In conjunction with the fair, a major exhibition was organized in memory of Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller, Gabriel Barbier-Mueller’s father. The exhibition honored all four generations of the art collecting family and featured masterpieces from the permanent collections of Gabriel’s grandfather, Josef Mueller; mother, Monique; father, Jean-Paul; brothers Stéphane and Thierry; and niece, Diane.

This exhibition encompasses the entirety of samurai history to allow the visitor to see the evolution of armor as warfare progresses from bows and arrows to swords and guns. Intricate pieces such as lacquered metal helmets adorned with crests, and delicate, detailed armor capable of protecting the samurai in brutal combat, will be on display. Inside the gallery, visitors will experience the masterful craftsmanship of each object and the historical context of the samurai as they walk through this fascinating epoch in Japanese history.

Straight from Paris part of the collection continued on to Las Vegas, Nevada for its exhibition at BGFA. “With each of our exhibits, we look to curate compelling collections that combine elements of history and culture, allowing guests to not only view stunning art pieces, but also learn about the context and significance,” said Tarissa Tiberti, executive director of art and culture for MGM Resorts International. “The exhibit of Samurai: Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection embraces a vibrant Japanese art form

“It is the combination of art and armor, the boundless creativity of the objects’ forms, and the aesthetics used by these fierce and cultivated warriors that drew us in to assemble our collection,” said Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller.

The BGFA exhibit is on view through April 29, 2018. For tickets, visit bellagio.com/bgfa or call (702) 693-7871 or (877)957-9777. To see where the collection goes next and to tour the Dallas museum, visit HARWOODDistrict.com/arts. FALL/WINTER 2017

HARWOOD BRINGS SWITZERLAND TO DALLAS

With its quaint cafes, elegant bistros, and manicured gardens, the HARWOOD District sometimes feels more like Europe rather than Dallas, Texas. That’s because the owner of global real estate firm Harwood International, Gabriel Barbier-Mueller, was born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland. He came to Dallas in 1979 with passion and a plan: to bring international influence to the city. You could certainly say that Barbier-Mueller — who is also Honorary Consul of Switzerland for North Texas — succeeded. In addition to other global ventures, Harwood International owns 18 blocks of prime Dallas real estate and has shaped it into a delightful pocket of Uptown, known for sophisticated buildings, chic restaurants, and

and even a museum with the world’s largest and most renowned collection of samurai armor and artifacts. The under-construction Harwood No. 10 will even have a European-inspired pedestrian walkway dubbed La Rue Perdue, which echoes the stone-lined, open-air corridors of Paris. The lovely Marie Gabrielle Restaurant and Gardens is another spot with European flair, especially when visiting artists perform. On September 27, the Swiss Concert in the Gardens brought a fusion of Swiss culture, music, and food to the HARWOOD District, presented in partnership with The Swiss Club of Dallas and North Texas. There were performances from Accordion Orchestra (from the village of Aesch in Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland), the Yodel

Club Choir from Schlossbrünneli Möriken Wildegg, and special North Texas guests, the Swiss Longhorns and Frohsinn Singing Society. Even though Happiest Hour, one of the District’s seven restaurants, has a more American feel, the majority of the area’s restaurants have a decidedly international vibe. From the coastal Italian offerings at Dolce Riviera, to the contemporary European menu at Mercat Bistro, to the quaint cafe Magnolias: Sous Le Pont, there are plenty of places where it’s easy to forget you’re even in America, let alone the Lone Star State. Whether you’re dining, listening to music, or just strolling, it’s easy to get lost in the European feel of the District.
