WHAT’S YOUR HARWOOD STORY? B Y A L E X YO U N G
The District is full of exciting opportunities and moments to be made. From storied samurai folklore to delicious delicacies at world-class restaurants, there is always a tale to be told. Our #HarwoodStories series take us from one end of the District to the other to discover fond memories of special moments that are made daily at the restaurants and venues all around the neighborhood. Newly engaged couple, Summer and Dustin Deas, were treated to a dinner they’ll never forget at Mercat Bistro. We first heard of their story when they entered our our Valentine’s Day Stories contest on Instagram and it was a match made in Harwood heaven. Summer tells us how “two swipes right” on a dating site led to a coffee date that resulted in a proposal in the Marie Gabrielle Gardens. Fast forward ten months, they are now married, both work in District and walk past the bench where it all happened every day! Now with the continuation of the Stories giveaways, our followers can expect the unexpected from a District full of excitement and surprises. Be sure to follow along by searching and keeping track of #HarwoodStories and @HarwoodDistrict on Instagram.

NEW MODEL UNITS AT BLEU CIEL BY JANE ROZELLE
Standing sky high in the bustling Harwood District is the newly completed Bleu Ciel – the latest pièce de résistance from Harwood International (HI). This property brings a whole new meaning to Irving Berlin’s symphonic notes Blue Skies (Smiling at Me). HI is ecstatic with the outcome of the project and cannot wait to share it with the Dallas community. Last summer, HI revealed the exciting development plans for the widely anticipated new complex after it first broke ground in 2014. There has been much buzz around the newest concept from the innovative Harwood International team and after several years’ worth of carefully curated planning, expectations were set, and preparation went into full gear. Flash forward to today, the high-rise has hit its peak, the doors are open and it’s time to talk details…décor details in particular. No need to whip out the Rolodex to find a good designer, as HI has enlisted several vaunted names in the biz to do the heavy lifting. Cue in Cantoni, California Closets, Boudreaux Associates, and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. Currently on display for potential tenants are three model units, showcasing these powerhouses’ signature styles and how their visions can unfold into your very own dream home. Here, a sneak-peek inside each one. First up, Cantoni. The contemporary eye of this Dallas-based retailer and design studio lends itself to a sumptuous, modern home for the urban dweller. ”For the model, we wanted to keep it neutral and warm to help prospective residents envision themselves living in the space,” says Benji Rodriguez, Designer at Cantoni Dallas. “We opted for low profile furniture to let the home’s stunning views take center stage and integrated soft textures to add warmth.” Step into the model unit and your eyes immediately lock on a watercolor diptych featuring a striking blue ombré painting mounted on the wall. And the impressive artwork doesn’t stop there: avant-garde swivel chairs, phantom rectangular mirrors, large-scale photographs mounted on acrylic, and chandeliers suspended over the dining table. The space exudes a sense of drama befitting for any modernistic maven. Upon first glance of the next model unit, one would think that someone is currently residing in the space. This is thanks to Glen Boudreaux and his team, who have mastered the art of perfecting a whimsical mix of vintage and modern. Encapsulating a client’s personality along with necessities for his/her everyday lifestyle is a skill that Boudreaux Associates strives to perfect in each project. With meticulous attention to detail yet elevated taste, you can take a look around the room and find pots rendered from a buying trip to India, and tie-dye oil paintings bedecked on the wall. “We design our projects from function first and then create a livable and beautiful environment,” shared Glen Boudreaux. Making for an exotic blend of past and present. Also showcased in this unit are the fully furnished out closets from notable California Closets. If you’re worried your extensive shoe collection will not fit on the shelves or your dress shirts will not line up just right – you can cross this off your checklist. As we all know, CC is synonymous to customized perfection.

Finally, we made our way to the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams model unit. With the open layout and effortlessly chic attention to detail, we had half a mind to think that Meryl Streep was about to walk in for a dinner party. The place exudes a charming laissez-faire atmosphere to where you want to plop down on the couch for an afternoon snooze or pull out the rosé and enjoy the picturesque sunset views on the patio amongst friends. Whichever set up embodies your taste, you cannot go wrong by electing one of these design darlings for your new home. In fact, this spectacular injection of each of their signature styles is what makes Bleu Ciel soar to new heights and truly stand apart from other real estate developments. Designed by the incomparable French architect JeanMichel Wilmotte and HDF, HI’s in-house interior design firm, Bleu Ciel has tactfully composed this new 33-story haven in the sky. As purveyors of resort-style luxury living, each of the HI’s concepts features the absolute best and Bleu Ciel is certainly no exception to the rule – offering premier amenities: floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Miele top quality appliances in the kitchen, patio fireplaces, individual private garages within the master garage, wine room storage in the building, and a resident-only spa. The ground floor boasts 12,000 square-feet of retail and restaurant space featuring a European market. Take a stroll in the landscape podium gardens (designed by renowned landscape architect, Sadafumi Uchiyama) or relax poolside under a canopy of palm trees.
Two junior Olympic pools on the 6th floor Amenity Deck.
Although you will most likely never want to leave the grounds of Bleu Ciel, we would like to point out that the neighborhood alone touts a Walk Score of 92. Leave the car behind and head out to explore the bustling city that surrounds the space. Grab a glass of wine and enjoy the deck at Dolce Riviera; make your way down to Crescent Court to check out the latest exhibit at Bivins Gallery; peruse the latest fashions at Stanley Korshak; or meet your friends for a friendly game of volleyball on the courts and explore the new menu at The Grove. Whether you envision starting out or starting over for your next home, Harwood International invites you to come see what the buzz is all about. We guarantee once you see the space, you’ll be sold. As for furnishing the new pad, with these designers, the sky’s the limit.

GET ARTSY AT MAGNOLIAS: SOUS LE PONT
GETTING TO KNOW ANNA TOVAR B Y A L E X I E E S T R A DA
so I quickly realized that oil paintings weren’t what I needed to be focusing on anymore. I spent a few years asking myself “What’s next?” and it wasn’t until 2011 that I started down the path that I’m on now. What encouraged you to take this big step of getting your work out there? Making art is just a part of who I am. A part that screams so loudly, that ignoring it isn’t an option for me. I’ve always functioned under the mentality that I just need to keep moving forward. Sometimes I don’t know what that next step will look like, or how to do things, but I figure it out. That drive has definitely helped push me along and given me the courage to put myself and my work out there for others to see. We love that it’s a family business. How is working with your husband? It’s actually great. He’s a really hard worker and wants me to be successful as much as I do. There are a lot of logistical aspects to my job that I don’t actually need to be the one doing. He handles all of my wholesale and consignment accounts, and he’s perfect for that. He’s a big people person and skilled at communicating, so I trust him fully which makes it a lot easier to let him run with it. Tell us something interesting about your process or a special piece that you created. In my most recent work, I’ve combined block printing with photorealistic watercolor paintings. Those pieces were definitely the most stressful and exciting pieces I’ve ever worked on. I spent so much time on the watercolor paintings, and knew that if I messed up the block print that was going on top, that I would have to start all over. I’m so thankful they all worked out! If you could have coffee with any other artist, who would it be and why?
Anna Tovar, featured artist at Magnolias: Sous Le Pont.
As both a watercolorist and a printmaker, Anna Tovar has always been fascinated with the pursuit of balance in her work. Balancing the simple with the complex. The negative with the positive. The organic with the fixed. The heavy with the light. Every piece she produces has an overarching theme and ambition of being a harmoniously integrated whole. Anna’s beautiful watercolors and linocut prints are currently on show at Magnolias: Sous Le Pont. Her artwork is also featured on custom to-go cups for Magnolias’ #KindCups initiative. We sat down with Anna to learn more about the person and the passion behind the work. Can you tell us a bit about you – as a wife and mom and an artist? I live in Denton with my husband, Luis, and our three children, Axel (6), Eden (4), and Luca (2). I’m a work from home mom, so I run my business in little bits and pieces throughout each day. It’s definitely challenging, but I am so very passionate about both being a mom and an artist, so I have made a way for it to work. What do you want people to experience when they see your work? I hope that people experience a sense of calm when viewing my work. I focus on achieving a sense of balance in every piece that I make. Primarily in the combination of negative and positive space, but also between natural and geometric elements, and in the colors that I choose. When did you first launch the Anna Tovar shop? That’s always a tricky one for me to answer. I first opened an Etsy shop in 2008 with my photo-realistic oil paintings, as that was my main focus when I graduated from college. The economy was struggling at the time,
There’s a printmaker in California named Lili Arnold who is making such beautiful and inspiring art. I would love to sit down and learn about her life and what inspires her. I know that my stage of life has greatly shaped the way that I make art, so I can only assume that that’s the case for many other artists as well. What words of wisdom do you have for artrepreneurs out there? Two things: Just get started and find a community that builds you up and encourages you. I also work for The DIME Store here in Denton. The people that I have met through that opportunity are all creatives like me, and we have formed a bond of encouragement and support that has become invaluable to me. What’s next for Anna Tovar? I’m working right now on continuing to build my line. Just last year I introduced block printing into my work, and it really transformed how I do things. I started combining the block prints with my watercolor paintings, and my work just feels more “me” than it has in a very long time. I want to keep pursuing that and building up the products that I offer. What’s your favorite piece on display now at Magnolias and why? There’s a series of four block prints that are hanging together on the far wall. I’m most excited about these pieces for a couple of reasons. The first being that they feel very “me.” I was making them and it just felt so natural and effortless. The second reason why I like them so much is because they released a flood of inspiration for new work. It feels a little bit like walking on stepping stones. One stone leads to the next which leads to the next and so on. I’m looking forward to taking each of those steps and seeing where I end up. A FAMILY’S DAY AT THE SAMURAI COLLECTION W R I T T E N B Y C H E RY L N G C O L L E T T
“Why is this samurai armor so small?” asks my 12-year-old. “That’s because it belonged to a child,” our guide answered. We are at The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection, located on the top floor of St. Ann’s Historic School. My son’s face changes at the realization that boys his age trained to be warriors with the foresight that they might be killed in a violent death. Welcome to the fascinating world of the Japanese samurai where Bushido is everything. Bushido, we learned, is a code of conduct or a set of virtues that samurais must follow: honesty, courage, benevolence, respect, sincerity, honor and loyalty. A samurai’s day may be filled with martial arts and other refined pursuits such as poetry, gardening, and music. While many lived a privileged life, they still had a responsibility to serve and protect their community. The Samurai Collection with over 1,000 artifacts ranging from the seventh to the nineteenth century, is the largest of its kind outside of Japan. On display at any given time are about 80 pieces of armor, helmets, masks, weaponry, and even horse armor. On your visit, be on the lookout for the fascinating changes in armor and helmet styles as weaponry moves from the bow and arrow to the introduction of guns. When bringing children, set aside at least 45 minutes to immerse yourselves with a self-guided tour or time your visit with a staff-led tour. While a self-guided tour can give you the freedom to simmer over the embellishments of an Oboshi Kabuto helmet from the Edo period, the staff-led tours are full of stories to capture the imagination. Family Day, on the first Saturday of each month, is a great option with additional activities like story time or a craft like origami for the kids. Plus, Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar located beneath the museum is a perfect spot for post-tour brunch - especially with a new brunch menu. Coming soon this summer, The Samurai Collection will feature a new exhibition of samurai families and clans. Upon hearing this, my son’s eyes lit up and he said, “Let’s go to the library to read up on them, Mama and then let’s come back.” Cheryl Ng Collett is a freelance lifestyle and travel journalist and creator of IttyBittyFoodies.com, a food and travel blog for families. WHAT’S NEW IN HARWOOD
MEET THE NEW HARWOOD B Y LY D I A B OY C E
Melinda Gates visited Magnolias: Sous Le Pont
To commemorate this significant year in the District in terms of projects and to celebrate Harwood International’s 30th Anniversary, Harwood District is getting a makeover. We updated the visuals of brand to better match what the District now represents. The updated identity seeks to speak to all our brands and audiences in the District, continue existing expectations of what the original mark stood for, as well as look towards the future.
Resort-style comes to life as the Bleu Ciel pool deck reaches completion HCMS begins construction on new restaurant concept Model homes at Bleu Ciel open for tours with future homeowners New seasonal menu at Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar launched BCG, HollyFrontier, MoneyGram, Northern Trust, Vista Energy Eyecare Services Partners, Schuepbach Energy renew office leases The Grove reopens for the season and with an all-new, expanded menu
In the coming months you’ll start to see the logo above, a new color scheme, a new newsletter format, and a brand new website. The cow featured in the logo is attributed to the Swiss cows placed around our District to note its boundaries. The Swiss cows throughout the district pay homage to the founder and CEO of Harwood International, Gabriel Barbier-Mueller and to the European influence found throughout the District. Where our previous cow logo mark was an outline, the new drawn version significes the artistic side and sophistication of the District. We’ve also incorporated a new color into our brand palette. Green represents nature, growth, harmony, stability, and ambition - all aspects that represent the District and its developer. A new logo mark to signify the leasing side of our District was also in order. The interlocking HD represents the meeting of corporate work with lifestyle. With amenties to ease the day-to-day lives of our tenants and gardens to enrich them, we pride ourselves on offering a better place to work. Lastly, our previous slogan for the District was “Live. Work. Explore.” To hone in on what makes our District unique, a new tagline “Always a Good Idea” speaks more to the excitement of the neighborhood. Whether you are planning a wedding, seeking new office space, needing a jolt of cold brew, or looking for a new home, Harwood District is simply Always a Good Idea. Visit HarwoodDistrict.com to watch for updates and to sign up for our weekly newsletter.
Always a Good Idea.
