YOUR INTERNSHIP ABROAD An international internship is part of your education at HAS, but you have freedom in deciding what it will look like. The better you prepare, the more you can benefit from your internship. This booklet is issued by the International Office and includes practical tips and advice to help you.
YOUR INTERNSHIP ABROAD
HOW TO START? The internship coordinator is your first point of contact for arrangements concerning your internship. He/she knows all substantive conditions applicable to your internship. He/she may also appoint you an internship lecturer. Please check the intranet to find out who your internship coordinator is. The International Office informs and advises on practical matters regarding your international internship. A few of these are briefly mentioned in this booklet. HAS intranet: Internship Abroad u Starting Point u Your study programme
Your internship coordinator and the International Office can both help you with preparations for your internship, but obviously you yourself are responsible for all arrangements. This means you need to find an internship, make contact with the internship provider and arrange all practical matters (e.g. visa and insurance).
YOUR INTERNSHIP ABROAD
FINDING AN INTERNSHIP ABROAD Start your search for an internship about a year in advance. Think about what you are looking for in an internship. What do you want to learn? Which country can offer the best experience in your field? What is your budget? Obviously, the costs involved in an internship differ per destination. Will you have to travel far? Is cost of living higher or lower than in the Netherlands? What are the costs of any visa, insurance, etc. On the intranet you will find a lot of tips to get you started in finding an internship.

YOUR INTERNSHIP ABROAD
SECURITY POLICY Since HAS University of Applied Sciences feels responsible for the welfare of its students, it has drawn up a security policy i.e. emergency policy relating to the international internship. This includes observance of the travel advice issued by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an availability service for students during their stay abroad, and the digital Emergency Form. Please check the information on the intranet for the travel advice category of your internship destination, and for the digital form link.

PRACTICAL PREPARATIONS
VISA AND WORK PERMITS If you are an EU citizen you don’t need any visa or work permits for countries of the European Union. However, if you do your internship outside the EU a visa and work permit are (almost always) required. It’s your responsibility and obligation to hold the correct work and residence permit. You can apply for a visa and work permit at the embassy or consulate of the country of your destination, or through an internship agency. If it subsequently appears you have travelled abroad without the proper permits, your internship will still be rejected. As the application procedure may take a long time, it is expressly advised to start the application at least three months before your departure date. Please take into account that costs vary greatly per country.

PRACTICAL PREPARATIONS
INSURANCE During your internship abroad you are not insured through HAS. Before your departure, you need to check the following insurances, and if necessary, modify for adequate coverage abroad: • Liability insurance • Health insurance • Accident insurance • Legal aid insurance • Baggage insurance and/or travel insurance All of the above can also be insured through the IPS insurance (Insurance Passport for Students). IPS is a dedicated insurance for study and internships abroad. For more insurance information, please check the intranet.

HOUSING It could well be that your internship provider provides accommodation or can mediate in finding accommodation. Don’t hesitate to ask them for help. If you’re going to find accommodation yourself, try the internet, local estate agents, student housing agencies, local tourist office, local papers, or ask former students who did their internship in the same region. If your stay abroad is less than eight months, do not deregister at the municipality. For more housing information, please check the intranet.
