Háskóli Íslands – Lykiltölur
Fylgt úr hlaði Háskóli Íslands er alþjóðlegur rannsóknaháskóli sem hefur jafnframt ríkum skyldum að gegna við íslenskt samfélag, menningu og tungu. Rannsóknavirkni starfsmanna hefur vaxið hratt á undanförnum árum og sýna alþjóðlegir mælikvarðar að áhrif rannsókna þeirra hafa aukist verulega. Þá er skólinn í nánu samstarfi við marga af helstu rannsóknaháskólum og háskóladeildum heims auk þess að vera í samstarfi við öflugar íslenskar vísindastofnanir og fyrirtæki. Markmið Háskóla Íslands er ætíð að sækja fram á við á sviði rannsókna, kennslu, stjórnunar og stoðþjónustu ásamt því að efla gæði og styrkja innviði allra þátta háskólastarfsins. Drifkrafturinn felst ekki hvað síst í að skapa nýja þekkingu og verðmæti byggð á rannsóknum og vísindum. Háskólar eru ómissandi hlekkur í þekkingar- og verðmætasköpun nútímasamfélaga og munu lífskjör í framtíðinni byggjast á þekkingu, vísindastarfsemi, nýsköpun og frumkvöðlahugsun. Styrkur háskólans í kennslu og rannsóknum varð til þess að koma honum á lista Times Higher Education World University Rankings árið 2011 yfir þrjú hundruð bestu háskóla heims. Árið 2016 var Háskóli Íslands í 242. sæti og jafnframt í 15. sæti yfir bestu háskóla á Norðurlöndum á sama lista. Í þessu riti birtast í þriðja skipti lykiltölur í starfsemi Háskóla Íslands og tekur hún til áranna frá og með 2012 til 2016. Jón Atli Benediktsson Rektor Háskóla Íslands

Um Háskóla Íslands Háskóli Íslands var stofnaður árið 1911. Við skólann eru fimm fræðasvið og 25 deildir ásamt námsleiðum í þverfaglegu framhaldsnámi og sjö rannsóknasetrum á landsbyggðinni. Háskóli Íslands hefur brautskráð yfir 50 þúsund nemendur og býður upp á fjölbreytt nám á háskólastigi. Háskóli Íslands er eini háskóli landsins sem býður bæði grunnnám og framhaldsnám á öllum helstu fræðasviðum.

University of Iceland – Facts and figures
Introduction The University of Iceland is an international research university that also plays an important role in Icelandic society, culture and language. Research productivity at the University has grown rapidly in recent years and international standards also show that research impact has increased significantly. In addition, the University of Iceland works closely with many major universities and research faculties around the world as well as cooperating with Iceland’s many dynamic scientific institutions and companies. The University of Iceland always aims forward in terms of research, teaching, administrative and support services in order to improve quality and strengthen the foundation upon which all university activities rest. The driving force lies not least in the generation of knowledge and value in research and sciences. Universities play a vital role in the creation of knowledge and wealth in modern societies, since human progress has always been determined knowledge, research, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. The University of Iceland’s excellence in teaching and research earned it a spot among the top three hundred universities worldwide on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2011. Today, the University of Iceland holds the 242th place on the list and is also ranked 15th among the best Nordic universities, according to the same source. This publication is the third of its kind and shows key facts and figures for the University of Iceland during the period between 2012 and 2016. About the University of Iceland The University of Iceland was established in 1911. It consists of five schools and 25 faculties together with interdisciplinary postgraduate studies and seven Research Centers around Iceland. The University of Iceland has awarded over 50.000 degrees and offers diverse tertiary education. The University of Iceland is the only university in Iceland to offer both undergraduate and post-graduate studies in all major fields of study.
