That’s me!
Hello! I’m Hattie and this is my portfolio. I have a passion for all things to do with design. I am currently studying BA Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art, graduating in Summer 2017. My specialties are in branding, packaging and illustrative designs with a quirky, personal touch.

ZERO - ANTI PACKAGING STORE
Portfolio 2017
A theoretical brand for a new store opening that encourages a zero waste lifestyle. Zero aims to reinvent the way that we shop for food, by buying food without the packaging it means less waste will go to landfill. It’s aim is to ‘pre-cycle’ so that if no waste is created there is no need for recycling and therefore excess emissions.
The store works by using bulk bins and baskets for the customers to weigh what they need using re-usable vessels like glass jars, they would then print the label with the weight and pay. A simple colour palette was used to save on ink pollution and recycled stocks were used for the labels and the guide.

ZERO WASTE GUIDE
Portfolio 2017
As part of my research into the antipackaging project I looked into the zero waste movement. I thought it best to compile this research into a two colour risograph zine/guide. Risograph printing was chosen because it is a more sustainable print process due to the use of soya based inks.

STARPACK - OH LUXURY VODKA
Portfolio 2017
As an entry for this years Starpack Packaging Awards I collaborated with another graphic designer to create a new luxury flavoured vodka brand. The name came from the definition for alcohol - an alcohol is any organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group – OH is found . OH could be an exclamation used to describe something that tastes nice or even an adjective to emphasise something e.g. OH
so fruity. OH Vodka oozes sophistication and luxury through the use of serifs similar to that you would find in an editorial fashion magazine, targeting our target market of 25-40 year old women. The design for the bottles was based around the flavours and their visual interpretations. We took botanical illustrations of each of the flavours and added the shapes that came
to mind when tasting the flavours. The use of traditional illustration methods appeals to a more sophisticated target audience who appreciate quality.

LCA FRESHERS BRANDING
Portfolio 2017
As Communications Officer of the Students’ Union one of my main tasks was to brand and create the collateral for Fresher’s. Using the theme of shapes to represent all different shapes and sizes of people who come to university I created a playful, bright identity for the fresher’s events. Taking inspiration from the famous Vernon Street building mosaic and brick work for the colour
scheme I set about to make something fresh and new. For the logo, it needed to be bold and bright to stand out against patterned surfaces. The use of shapes emphasises the playfulness of the students union and the creative ethos of the College.

THE GROWN UP CHOCOLATE COMPANY YCN
Portfolio 2017
In response to the YCN brief we were asked to create a design for chocolate bars that the customers can customise. I collaborated with an illustrator who created the sticker illustrations while I did the bulk of the design and art direction. The theme for our customisable packaging plays on the idea of sending a gift to a loved one. The “postal aesthetic keeps the gifting
process personal, adding nostalgia from the traditional motifs, like stamps and labels, to the texture of the envelope style sleeve. The personal touch of sending mail to a friend is maintained by the digital sticker pack we created. Stickers can be added and removed, giving the sender ultimate customisation of their gift from start to finish. To give them a starting point, we created 6,
fully customisable starter templates for the sleeves. This follows through to the chocolate wrappers themselves, where images can be uploaded within frames, keeping the stamped, stickers and collaged aesthetic consistent.

BEAR DIVING ACADEMY YCN
Portfolio 2017
The oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth’s surface so it’s pretty important. Also I believe that the ocean provides so much interest and mystery to everyone. It is something also that we need to look after, with a rise in overfishing issues, plastic pollution and coral reef bleaching we need to all turn our eyes to the oceans and appreciate the variety of life that it has to offer.
BEAR is head of his own academy in charge of protecting and researching all marine life from around the world. His HQ is a huge submarine which he runs with the help of his cadets, the children who by BEAR products.
I created a series of bold and bright illustrations to attract the audience of 4-9 year olds to learn more about the oceans.

YOU+ NOOTROPICS
Portfolio 2017
You+ is a theoretical brand of nootropics for young professionals with hectic lifestyles. The supplements are built to fit around their lifestyle whether that’s on the go or at home. You+ is all about bettering yourself and your lifestyle by simply adding energy, motivation or relaxation.
This brand was created as part of a collaborative brief with two other members. I worked mainly on the packaging design, patterns and web design. The patterns used were based off the chemical formulas of each of the supplements as well as taking inspiration from the way how nootropics work in the brain - by firing neurotransmitters. As well as taking inspiration from the chemicals themselves, the colour schemes were
based on the feelings that we wanted the supplements to inspire. This was a winning pitch.
Hattie Windley
The sleeve packaging was designed as an on the go solution for the busy target audience. It meant they could leave the main supply at home while still have the option to have the supplements at work or while they are out and about.

SLOEMOTION PACKAGING
Portfolio 2017
I created a simple chutney label for Sloemotion based on their re-branded bottle designs. The design was kept simple with luxurious materials to replicate life on the hedge. This was a live brief so these products are now on the shelves.
I also created the gift box for the mini bottles once again using finishes to make the product look more ornate.

PERRY THE PIG
Portfolio 2017
While researching into vegetarianism and veganism I found that there was a small niche in the market for children’s vegetarian or vegan ready meals.
The book itself encourages children to think about animal welfare but isn’t overly negative or detailed. As the protagonist, Perry the pig, escapes and finds more friends the colour scheme goes from a cold blue palette to one that is bright and warm.
Hattie Windley
Alongside an illustrated book I created a range of ready meals to appeal to children who prefer not to eat meat. The packaging also contains puzzles on the underside so that the children can have an activity to do while they wait for their meal to warm up.

SPROUT SANDWICHES
Portfolio 2017
For my dissertation I researched into the consequences of food packaging on the environment and discovered the use of harmful plastics in packaging should stop. I created this packaging, made out of plantable seeded paper, to raise awareness for the dangers of food packaging as well as to tackle the issue head on.
Sprout is aimed at parents and their children, similar to the demographic of Innocent smoothies. It encourages parents to plant the packaging with their children not only as a bonding activity but also to learn more about the environment.
Thought was also put into the products themselves and how to make them more sustainable. For example no sliced bread was used because of the waste created as the ends of the loaves are never used. Also the sandwiches are vegetarian and vegan as this lifestyle has a much smaller carbon footprint.

CHAPTER 4/5 BRANDING
Portfolio 2017
Chapter four/five was an exclusive cover art exhibition featuring interpretations of seminal texts by level 4 and 5 Graphic Design students from Leeds College of Art. The project won the pitch and the exhibition took place in May 2015. As part of a collaborative team we branded and prepared an exhibition in Leeds Central Library. After coming up with the
concept together, I created the logo while we collaboratively worked on the rest of collateral. This project was a real challenge at the time but was all worth it being able to see the final exhibition with our branding in situ.
