Finding The Path Forward JESSICA JOHNSON

T

here’s something about springtime for me that signals a new beginning—I know technically the calendar changes in January to a “new year;” and then of course there’s the new school year starting in August or September. But for me, I always feel like spring is the new year. Maybe it’s because the heat starts coming and the grass is growing. In the power equipment dealer universe it is the beginning of the boom. Now, I know what you’re all collectively thinking: This girl is insane, yammering about spring when it’s June; it’s summertime. But, with the wind here in the Deep South, I don’t officially count summer to be here until the end of July or August when it will reach approximately 7,000,000° in the shade, and the humidity makes it feel like I’m swimming to my car from the front door. For me, this time of year marks the passage of time. My mother has reminded me I am in my mid-30s. Yes I know, you’re all thinking I am such a baby with so much to learn. But, I’ve just realized lately, my kids are getting older. Making their way through the ranks of elementary school. They have their own lives and personalities and we’re all having to navigate which one might make the All-Star team and which one won’t, who is more into sitting and reading Harry Potter and who would rather be plotting his fantasy baseball team roster. It is all very interesting to me, how everything with my athletic little boys is shaking out. Carbon copies, born just 20 minutes apart, so alike from the start, but really changing and moving in different directions. Staying true to who they have always been, give them a ball and they are happy for hours, but also finding their way in a new and different time…I see a parallel between them and a certain manufacturer and its recent flurry of announcements. (I’ve got most of them crammed into Power Suppliers, beginning on page 6, if you’re not quite sure what I am talking about.) It has me wondering if the “most recognized power equipment brand in America” is just simply growing and changing in a natural way, or is it something deeper. Are they like Fitzgerald and Alexander still on the same plan, just sometimes adding things to the list, or is it a great shift towards something…else. Of course, I know the worst thing possible you can do in life is be resistant to change: Staying stagnant is like a pond in the Deep South—good for nothing but mosquitoes. I can’t help but wonder about the timing of the announcements, drawing again to the idea that springtime is the time for new beginnings. Our world is dependent on new things, new ideas, innovations. Our industry is not unique in the pursuit of something different. How are we going to use the natural next step in the world of self-driving cars and vacuums and even mowers? God help us all as the robots from the Jetsons have come to life. But a robot can’t climb into my tree and trim it; a robot won’t shape the hedges at Disneyworld into Mickey Mouse, and a robot sure as heck can’t fix itself when it is broken. So, instead are we going to move to the disposable model while more and more dealers shrink to service-only? I don’t see that as the path forward. Maybe we need to borrow a business idea or two from the Boxes—multiple locations to share knowledge, employees, whole goods and parts, convenience for customers to buy online and pick up in store. I know, I am going to get hate mail about all this, so I am going to take this opportunity to remind everyone I am the girl who publishes pictures of Parts Counter Cats and Dogs on Mowers shop pets regularly, alongside slightly off-color power equipment memes under PETcetera on page 39. Don’t come for me! But, I wonder, as I click “submit” on just one twin’s travel baseball health evaluation, should we look at something differPET ent than we planned as the perfect path forward?

POWERsuppliers Stihl To Enter Zero-Turn Market Stihl has announced it has a new manufacturing relationship with Briggs & Stratton that will expand the offerings of Stihl products in the U.S. Through this relationship, Stihl will launch a line of zero-turn mowers for professionals and homeowners. The new products will be available in select authorized local Stihl dealers beginning in January 2023. Combined with the existing gasoline and batterypowered handheld power equipment range, the addition of zero-turn mowers allows Stihl and Stihl dealers to provide one of the broadest ranges of power equipment in America. Briggs & Stratton will manufacture the new line of zero-turn mowers to meet Stihl specifications and quality standards. “The introduction of zero-turn mowers allows our network of authorized local Stihl dealers to offer an even greater breadth of product solutions for our customers who turn to Stihl for world class products and support to meet their garden and landscape needs,” says Terry Horan, Stihl Inc. President and CEO. “Working with Briggs & Stratton, a well-established leader in this product category, allows us to bring a superior product to market for both demanding professionals and discerning homeowners.” “We take great pride that Stihl has seen in Briggs & Stratton what we have known for years—we design, engineer and manufacture the best zero-turn mowers on the market,” adds Steve Andrews, Briggs & Stratton President and CEO. “With a 114-year legacy of power application and manufacturing expertise, Briggs & Stratton is a trusted leader in this industry, and we look forward to applying our superior product and manufacturing capabilities to produce Stihl zero-turn mowers.”

Toro To Invest $50M In Intimidator Group

The Toro Co. plans to invest roughly $50 million in Intimidator Group to double the company’s business within the next five years or so, company officials told Arkansas Business, after purchasing the company in a $400 million deal in January. Toro’s Rick Olson told Arkansas Business that the deal took just six months. He also said Toro’s planned 6

technology investments are mainly in three areas: alternative power for its products; smart, connected products; and robotic or autonomous products. And plans to implement a policy that 35% of sales must come from products that were introduced within the past two years at Intimidator, he added. Toro will provide capital and access to experts from other parts of the company to help its new acquisition grow. Intimidator Founder Robert Foster, who started the company with his wife Becky, spoke at a gathering in Batesville, Ark., to celebrate the purchase, said Intimidator turned down several interested buyers before it was approached by Toro. “Y’all know us enough to know that there’s no way possible that we could ever let our employees, let our dealers, let our city or let our state have someone come in that we wasn’t 100% confident they can do better than we could do,” Foster told the crowd during his comments. Foster will stay on at the company, but not run it; his role will be more focused on research and development and dealer relations. According to Foster, Intimidator does “the same amount of business in eight days as we did our first 14 months when we started. So, the growth has been unreal.”

AriensCo Purchases Thomas Equipment

AriensCo has purchased Thomas Equipment from A-L Parts Inc. This development allows AriensCo to offer a new four-season product line under the Gravely brand to reach into the rental and construction markets. Thomas Equipment has been a high-quality manufacturer of outdoor equipment for 79 years based in Beechwood, New Brunswick, Canada. Started in 1943 by the Thomas brothers as an agricultural repair business, Thomas Equipment quickly expanded into manufacturing equipment for agricultural purposes, namely potato harvesting and handling. In 1969, the company introduced the world’s first hydrostatic drive skid-loader. Thomas Equipment was purchased by A-L Parts Inc. in 2013. AriensCo is partnering with Al Downy and Leon Butterfield, owners of A-L Parts Inc., to launch the production of the Gravely branded mini-skid steer line in their Canadian facility. AriensCo is providing management sup-

port for the production ramp. Five Gravely branded mini-skid loaders (three diesel and two gas powered models) are planned for this fall.

Exmark Releases Videos With Landscapers

Exmark has launched a new video series designed to shine a light on the landscape maintenance professionals that rely on the company’s mowers every day. Each Exmark Signature Series episode offers a look inside the dayto-day operations of some of lawn care professionals across the country. According to Exmark Director of Marketing, Jamie Briggs, Exmark Signature Stories were created to tell the stories of landscape contractors who are living the life and doing it right. In the first Exmark Signature Stories episode, Exmark chatted with Congerville, Ill. landscape contractor, Jeremy Knecht of J. Jacobs Grounds. Along with his wife, Kalsey and their four children, Knecht discusses how the reliability, durability, and productivity of Exmark mowers allows him to effectively run his business while also leading a family-focused rural lifestyle. ‘Mr. Chain Saw’ Seeks Streamlined Path Dealer looks to adapt to future. BY DAN SHELL

D

ealer Paul Linden finds himself in a predicament many dealers have found themselves in over the years: Expansion and growth are a challenge thanks to labor issues, as he seeks the best way forward. It helps that his services are in demand thanks to decades of building a loyal customer following by the business owners who preceded him.

12

n

JUNE 2022

n

Linden and his dealership are challenged by the pandemic and recovery, but that’s nothing compared to the challenge of dealing with a huge hole in his life and business when his wife Sherri died unexpectedly in 2014, throwing his life into turmoil and derailing a major business expansion that was in the works. A native of Peoria, Ill., Linden had followed his brother West to the University of Oregon, graduated and had

operated a gas station and restaurant-lounge in the Eugene area. He had married a local girl, Sherri Watson, the daughter of “Mr. Chain Saw” Cecil Watson, her father who was operating the dealership at the time. Linden went to work in the business in 1994 and began learning the small engine industry and handheld equipment and technology.

Background Way back in the early 1970s, experienced saw dealership employee Watson had been working at the wellknown Wolford’s saw shop in Medford, Ore. About that time, he moved from southern Oregon to the Eugene area and bought the small dealership and supply company, Gross Logging Supply, in 1973. When he was getting his new chain saw business off the ground, Watson would occasionally have to get parts and supplies from other dealers. One, in particular, said that whenever Watson would show up, the dealer would exclaim, “Well, here comes Mr. Chain Saw!” The competitor’s joking aside, Watson thought that might not be such a bad way to be known if you’re selling and servicing chain saws. A few years

Linden, right, with experienced counter technician Marci Cartmill

later in 1978, when Watson built the building that the dealership still occupies on Sixth Avenue in downtown Eugene, he took the nickname as his own for the business, and “Mr. Chain Saw” was born. As a handheld equipment dealership specializing in chain saws, the business has seen the arc of chain saw technology and market dynamics since the earliest days of mass manufactured saws.

Like most, the dealership has weathered many storms, and is still trying to fight its way to the other side of the pandemic.

Homelite, Pioneer and Jonsered were early product lines, as well as Sachs Dolmar. The business sold and serviced saws by the hundreds back in the day, working with many of the area’s logging companies and timber fallers. The dealership had already seen its pro logging saw heyday come and go by the time Linden went to work in the business in 1994, as the logging industry was well on its way to mechanizing many chain saw functions. Currently, Mr. Chain Saw is offering Husqvarna, Echo and Shindaiwa whole goods. The dealership also sells lots of Oregon chain. Soon after Linden went to work with Mr. Chain Saw, he and Sherri bought the business from her father. Watson continued to work at the dealership for several years afterward. The couple and dealership perked along, and the two were planning an expansion in 2015 with a new and larger showroom. Sadly, the plan still remains on the shelf after Sherri’s tragic death from a brain aneurism on Christ-

Mr. Chain Saw Antiques The Mr. Chain Saw power equipment dealership dates to the 1970s, and owner Paul Linden has his share of chain saw antiques and old-timey stuff: 1950s vintage two-man chain saw; Mall promo clock (reconditioned); McCulloch tomato slicing marketing art oddity; and Mall bench grinder that still moves the metal.

6/2/22 3:02 PM

mas Day 2014. The death threw Linden into a haze for years after losing his life partner who worked so closely with him in the business. Looking back, he says he was just going through the motions for several years, “still hanging around because of our customers and employees,” Linden remembers. He says that if anything the tragedy has left him with a different perspective of what’s important in life: It takes a lot more nowadays to get him upset, and he’s not as controlling as he was before, he believes. Marci Cartmill, Sherri’s best friend who’s worked the counter at Mr. Chain Saw since 2006, says Sherri was a joy to be around, and occasionally customers will still ask about her. Linden was coming out of his personal fog when the pandemic provided another shock to the business. Linden remembers he worked buy himself for two weeks when some of the initial restrictions were announced in March 2020, then a technician came back to help, but the pandemic took a toll: Two employees had to step away with COVID issues, and another quit with heart problems. The dealership limped along at reduced hours for a few months, then by summer 2020, some employees had returned.

The dealership’s labor rate is $70/hr., and Linden reports turnaround time in late May was anywhere from five days to almost a month depending on the job and parts required. “We still have a lot of back orders, but at least we’ve gotten some whole goods in,” he says. The dealership has also been doing some brisk saw business with several local firefighting companies that are gearing up for the summer season. Linden says that looking to the future he’d like to streamline a bit, spend less

time working on old equipment and possibly find a niche product of wheeled or industrial equipment to sell and service. He’s also like to better develop Mr. Chain Saw as a brand and potentially as an online business. No matter what he decides Linden says he’ll follow the principles that have led the business for years: Be flexible, adaptable and creative in finding a niche while continuing to pursue top-notch customer service. “As new stuff comes out, we’re always looking to adapt,” Linden says. PET

Spring Ready Linden notes that in his experience, 2020 was the big cash year when customers had money to burn, while 2021 was not quite as good as supply chain issues and labor concerns arose. And now, 2022 has started off a bit flat with a late spring, though weather forecasts were predicting big shots of sun beginning late May, Linden noted. He adds that he’s seen a move back toward more repair business for the shop after the big sales year of 2020, though supply chain difficulties have made getting inventory a problem. Linden notes he finally received a long awaited shipment of saws this spring only to be told inventory and supply chain concerns would likely get worse before they get better. The staff is currently four: Marci and a full-time technician, plus two parttime technicians in addition to Linden. He’d like to add at least one more fulltime technician. “Customer relations are what’s kept us going,” Linden says. “We have a reputation for doing good work.” POWER EQUIPMENT TRADE

Due to metric-to-non-metric and non-metric-to-metric conversions, some measurements may not be exact. Also, weights were requested “dry, engine only,” but some may include cutting attachments. The "—" symbol indicates no reply; it does not necessarily mean the feature is not available. “C” stands for consumer or homeowner, while “P” stands for professional or commerical designations regarding warranty information. Manufacturers’ suggested retail prices are provided for most of the brands listed; however, some prices were withheld 18

at the request of the manufacturer. These prices are designed to serve only as a general guide. Prices are shown as of May 30; all specifications are subject to change. We made every effort to make this chart as complete and accurate as possible; however, those companies marked by a “**” notation did not return changes to us by press time. The models listed for them are the most accurate we had on file. Should manufacturers, suppliers, distributors or dealers spot any missteps, please notify Jessica Johnson, Managing Editor, Box 2268, Montgomery, AL 36102-2268/334-834-1170; fax: 334-834-4525; email: jessica@hattonbrown.com. ASPEN Aspen Fuels has successfully launched in the U.S. market and is now offering its premixed Aspen 2 (for 2-stroke engines) and Aspen 4 (4-stroke) fuels to professional and residential power equipment operators. Aspen fuels are alkylate-based fuels, which are among the cleanest and most stable gasoline products that can be produced. As clean high-octane gasoline, Aspen provides a much better user-experience, particularly for operators of chain saws and other handheld machines, and extends the life of power equipment. Over 30 years ago, Aspen first developed alkylate fuel in Sweden to benefit forestry workers and improve the conditions for chain saw operators who were suffering from various health problems associated with running pump gasoline. Aspen’s fuels are engineered to be virtually free of the harmful substances that are found in pump gasoline such as sulfur, benzene, toluene and other aromatic hydrocarbons. According to Ulf Augustsson, who works as a Forest Engineer with the Swedish Forest Agency, “You notice the difference immediately using alkylate fuel when operating chain saws without the headaches, without the gasoline smell. Other than feeling better, you also notice the benefits over time of the fuel quality with your equipment and you can store the product for long periods of time, of five years. Alkylate-based fuels have become the standard for chain saw instruction and operation here.” Aspen is increasingly becoming the choice for forestry and arborist professionals in the U.S. as well. Aspen 2 is premixed with fully-synthetic biodegradable oil and suitable for engines requiring 40:1 or 50:1 mixes. Aspen fuels offer a cleaner ethanol-free formulation that helps minimize engine corrosion and soot buildup for longer-lasting engines with less maintenance. In the U.S., Aspen Fuels are available to dealers through Oscar Wilson Engine & Parts, Power Equipment Systems, Marr Bros and John E Landis Co. Aspen fuels can be purchased in quarts, 1.3 gal., and larger pails and drums, ideal for shop or professional use. 26

SAWproducts CANNON BAR WORKS Since 1995, Cannon Bar Works has manufactured saw chain guide bars for the worldwide forest industry where only the highest quality bar stands a chance of longevity. Cannon started with one bar—the SuperBar—a chain saw bar truly made for professionals and grew their offerings from there. Cannon now manufactures a wide range of bars, including package cutting bars for sawmills, chain saw bars designed for narrow-kerf chain, wood carving, pruning, fire rescue, double-ended bars for chain saw milling, bars for mechanical harvesting, and more. Most recently, Cannon has introduced the Cannon DuraLite SuperBar. The DuraLite SuperBar is made from a virtually completed SuperBar. After the bar has been grooved and the rails have been flame hardened, they eliminate weight by milling out pockets on either side of the SuperBar, leaving a steel core in the center for strength. The center section is then perforated with holes. This method of construction is based on the same principal that one would see in an I-beam. Cannon then uses a special adhesive, which not only bonds the steel to two flexible aluminum inserts, one on each side of the bar, but also creates a chemical bond or weld between the two inserts. The new DuraLite SuperBar remains ridged, durable, and tough, has the same quality characteristics as the traditional SuperBar, but weighs up to 25% less! Every single Cannon bar is individually made by their skilled craftsmen and put through rigorous quality assurance checks prior to packaging. There are no exceptions to their quality standards. In fact, if a bar is not up to standards, it is scrapped. The old age “You get what you pay for,” certainly pertains to Cannon bars. For good reason, their bars sell for approximately 15% to 30% more than some of the mass-produced bars on the market. Positive feedback from professional loggers using Cannon bars say that they will often get over three times the life out of one compared to a less expensive mass-produced bars. Cannon Bar Works’ objective has always been to provide their customers with the highest quality chain saw bars at the fairest possible price.

SAWproducts IDEAL You wouldn’t use a pole saw to do the work of a gas-powered chain saw—you’ve got to match the right chain saw with the right job. Your customers aren’t any different. Getting the right messaging to the right customers can help your dealership get better reviews, more often. Here’s how Ideal TargetCRM helps dealers leverage their happiest customers: Create a communication loop Many dealers are focusing more on digital marketing channels including social media, digital ads, and text messaging. Nowadays, the customer journey begins before they’ve ever set foot in your store and continues even after they’ve purchased from your dealership. It’s important to be able to create a consistent cycle of engagement with your customers, while also creating long-lasting relationships with them. Send targeted promotions An automated sales and marketing platform, like Ideal’s TargetCRM, can help turn one-time customers into repeat buyers— all year round. You can continue to engage with customers through targeted text messaging and emails based on their purchase history, distance, and other personalized factors. This ensures your marketing efforts are timely and relevant to your customers. For example, if a customer purchased a chain saw from you, you could send them targeted promotions related to chain oil, accessories, or attachments. Get feedback from your customers After every sale or repair, send an automated survey to your customers to find out how their experience was. You can use their feedback to identify your happiest customers, so you can direct them to Google or Facebook and ask them to leave positive reviews that help you stand out. Data tracking inside TargetCRM lets you know invoice histories, search invoices, and whether a lead is a new or repeat customer. You can then group customers based on their feedback. That means you can identify trends and resolve problems faster.
