What inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start? I began my career in Accountancy, with plans to pursue the ACCA program in Singapore. What Inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start? I started my journey with the hospitality industry very early. I joined the Institute of Hotel Management in New Delhi, India as soon as I finished my schooling in 1987. As a child I would visit hotels with my parents for special occasions and my cousin was also working in a hotel and we got the chance to visit his hotel sometimes. I was very impressed and inspired with what I saw, smart, young, well-spoken and well attired people working in all areas. I knew this is the career I wanted and pursued it with enthusiasm as soon as I completed by schooling. In the year I started with my hospitality education it wasn’t a very popular or a well-known industry in India. Many of my relatives and friends of my parents would make comments about how I was throwing my life away. Fortunately, my parents were extremely supportive and always backed me and my decision to join the industry. I am so glad they did as I absolutely love what I do and I have enjoyed a long and fruitful career till now.

What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in your region, and how is your hotel adapting to these changes? I feel sustainable tourism is the future of our industry. Our natural resources are finite and we all need to make efforts to conserve them. What Inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start? My inspiration is A beautiful Lecturer who taught Sales & Marketing in the Hotel industry subject when I was studying at the university. Every time she came to teach, she came with her confidence and her smart looks, plus her aura, those things inspired me. I told myself that if I graduated and worked, I would be working in the hotel Sales & Marketing department and I started my career as a Sales Coordinator at a small hotel in Bangkok. What were some of the significant challenges you faced during your years in the hospitality industry and how did you overcome them? There are many significant challenges at the moment, and the biggest one is still the same thing which is the Price Wars. Creating a cheap price to compete with competitors is not our main focus. Due to we do have our standing point which is that “The Quality must come up with the price”. We do not focus on creating a low room rate but we

keep the price at a reasonable price and we keep our standard of service even higher. The guests can ensure that our resort is valued for money. What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in your region, and how is your hotel adapting to these changes? I think sustainable tourism will expand more and more in our region and worldwide. Most tourists pay more attention to environmental care and they are looking for hotels that are also aligned with sustainable tourism. We realized that this matter is very important. Bo Phut Resort & Spa has implemented many activities that care for the environment such as Waste separation, and Saving electricity, by installing motion sensors in the toilets, if there is a movement like when somebody is in the toilet, the light bulb will turn on automatically, and once there is no movement for about 30 seconds, the light bulb will immediately turn off. Moreover, we have a small sign in the guest room, to invite the guests to reuse the towels, in order to reduce water and electricity usage and to help our

Other than that, our restaurant has changed to using straws made from bagasse instead of plastic straws, in order to reduce the usage of plastic products and help the environment as well. We will definitely continue to do more sustainable tourism projects to be ecofriendly furthermore.

With regard to the contribution to preserving local culture and traditions, we have inserted Thai elements into the decoration both in the rooms and the dining room. Our signature restaurant is called “Sala Thai”. The restaurant combines the best of classical Thai architecture in a romantic setting enhanced with live entertainment of “Khim”, a traditional Thai musical instrument, whilst overlooking a splendid lotus pond. The guests will experience Thainess from the restaurant’s decorations, atmosphere, and traditional Thai music. In addition to that, the Food containers in the dining room are Thai-style ceramic. The plates are decorated with carved fruits and vegetables to indicate the uniqueness of Thai food.Moreover, our hotel has a policy for all employees to greet the guests by saying “Sawasdee krup or Sawasdee ka” every time they meet the

guests. The word “Sawasdee” is the Thai greeting. The man will say “Krup” and the woman will say “Ka” at the end of a sentence to make the conversation to be polite. We greet guests along with saying “Sawasdee” with a smile. The guests can feel the hospitality and friendly from our staff. What makes your property stand out from others in your region? Our great service at the premium level makes us outstanding from others in our region. We treat our guests like royalty from the moment they step out of the vehicle. During their stay at our hotel, the guests will receive wonderful service and attention from all of our team members. We have many repeating guests coming back to our hotel. Whether the repeating guests for the 2nd time, 3rd time, 4th time, and more than that. What’s even more special is that many guests have returned to stay with us 17 times. That means the guests are impressed with our warm service and they feel that our hotel is their 2nd home, they can be confident that every time they return to stay with us, they will receive a nice welcome as always. However, we will keep our stand of service and will make it beyond.

What Inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start? I graduated from Cape Town Hotel School (located at Granger Bay Campus) part of Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa, where I gained foundational hospitality training. One major challenge is adapting to everchanging guest expectations and trends. To overcome this, I make anticipating and exceeding guest needs a top priority. For instance, when guests are celebrating something special, we explore fresh ways to surprise them, like decorating their villa or preparing a custom menu. I also try to stay on top of industry trends to elevate the experiences at our Karma Beach area, Phoenix bar, Karma Beach Spa and that of our special dining options at our Karma Cliff Spa & Dine experience or Temple Lounge jazz band sessions. Introducing innovative offerings like mixology classes and wellness retreats helps keep our resort energised and distinctive. Mukalya Private Game Reserve officially opened its doors in December 2020. It was once a private weekend home for a Zambian family who share a deep love for nature and conservation. In early 2020 the family decided to name and open Mukalya to the public and share the magic of this beautiful location. It is a scenic 180km drive south of Lusaka on the banks of the Upper Lower Zambezi close to the Kariba Gorge in the Siavonga district. Accommodating 18-22 guests comfortably, in 9 uniquely designed rooms. Mukalya offers guests a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the bush in a tranquil and private setting with lavish attention to detail. Our grand entrance, indoor/outdoor living spaces, and dining areas overlook the Zambezi River with stunning views and fresh air to maximise your connection with nature.

The design of the reserve has incorporated lots of natural elements from the area such as all the pebble work on the walls and wood features from the woodlands nearby. As a boutique and designoriented safari lodge, the owners wanted the design of each room to have a different feel and look to ensure guests have a different experience on each visit. The room configuration at Mukalya is two deluxe rooms sold together, as a family room which share a spacious terrace, three deluxe plus rooms and four executive suites. All rooms/suites are river facing, and selected rooms have outdoor baths/showers, a jacuzzi tub or plunge pools. To maintain coolness and natural light, all windows are made with mesh and not glass, which allows the rooms to be cooled with natural wind.

Situated directly across the Hurungwe Safari Area, Mukalya has the added benefit of offering guests the possibility of spotting elephants, lions, leopard, buffalo, and other common game throughout the year. However, frequent sightings occur in high season which begins in May and ends in October. There is a vast range of safe and adventurous experiences catered for all age groups, such as walking safaris/game drives, sunrise/sundowner cruises, fishing, canoeing, birding, quad bike and buggy tours, and boat excursions into the Kariba Gorge. During the excursion, guests can view the Kariba Dam Wall from below and catch a glimpse of a gigantic rock island which is referred to as the home of the "Nyami Nymai" the river god of the Mighty Zambezi. Mukalya has tailor-made private dining arrangements which can be booked at a surcharge which include bush/boat breakfasts, island picnics and sundowners, and romantic bush dinners , all weather permitting. The cuisine at Mukalya is definitely a wow factor and highlight at the reserve.
