Having been in the hospitality industry since 1998, Heikkinen says that initially at the age of 18 he wanted to become a lawyer and thought that his ability to speak four languages would give him even further of an advantage in that field. Chef Tuomas eventually ended up pursuing his dream by getting a job in a restaurant in London, continuing his career in Italy, in India, on the Caribbean and most recently in Dubai. Heikkinen has been on the road since then and never looked back. Summarising his extensive career, Heikkinen says that the proudest moment till date has been accepting his first job as head chef at a restaurant with a very challenging management team. “I took this as a self-challenge and saw opportunities instead. After a year of hard work we managed to turn it around to become a very successful and an award winning food and drink destination. To stand in the middle of that restaurant with that buzz and great atmosphere, full of people enjoying the food and having great time was the ultimate reward during my career,” smiles Heikkinen looking back to the experience.

As someone who once suffered from low self-esteem due to a poor complexion, I used to visit a lot of spas searching for solutions for my skin, and can absolutely empathise with all my clients who are now going through the same thing they know that I understand what they are going through, and that I’ll make sure they’re in good hands. My Cozy Room is the result of putting together what I personally experienced as best practices from the spas that I visited, avoiding all the things that I disliked as a customer, and constantly improving our offerings and services. Our genuine aim has always been to help our customers look and feel their most beautiful, and as such we treat every one of them with sincerity. All our therapists are experts at what they do, and take the time to understand the individual needs and concerns of our guests, ensuring that they are properly taken care of with only the right treatment for them, not necessarily what is ‘trendy’ at the moment. After every session, we also make it a point to gather feedback from them, to see how their treatment went, and if they have any suggestions for improvement. We take all of this seriously, and constantly work to improve ourselves. I believe our loyal customers understand our firmly-held values, and appreciate the fact that we are genuine with them, and want only to provide the best possible service. We are also in the midst of developing our own line of spaquality skin care products, to ensure that our clients can maximise the results of their treatment. By Summer 2016, our hotel has completed massive renovation projects that spanned almost 4 years, involving all of our 542 rooms and suites, Grand Club Lounge, Grand Ballroom and Grand Café. In Summer 2017, there will be refurbishment work for Tiffin Lounge (located right above our hotel lobby), and Salons event venue. As our hotel will soon celebrate our 28th anniversary, there are always plans to update and refresh. What advice can you offer to young aspiring hoteliers that hope to achieve a General Manager position one day? Of course it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be in a senior management position, taking care of a big team. However, I personally believe that caring for team members and colleagues goes a long way. Empathy keeps your listening ears open, and thus helps you (as a leader) to focus on issues
