What inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start?

I have always been very curious about the age-old occupation of the innkeeper. I think it stems from my love of traveling – an innate curiosity to discover new places, experience foreign cultures, taste exotic cuisine.

The innkeeper would have the world come to him even if he had to remain stationed in one location; he would welcome visitors from far ends of the Earth and enjoy the best seat in the house as they shared stories of their home and their travels. Fortunately, the solution came to me early enough in life. I was out one evening, when this wind-whipped flyer came and wrapped itself around my leg. It was an advertisement, beckoning me to join the hotel management program at IHM Pusa; possibly, it was fate. The rest is, as they say, history.

What are some of the significant challenges you faced during your years in the hospitality industry and how did you overcome them?

I must, humbly, concede that the main challenge I faced during my three decades in the hospitality industry is not mine alone but one, I believe, many of my industry comrades share. We serve guests from all around the world daily and also have the opportunity to host feats that celebrate the food and culture of people from all around the world; we partake in the significant moments that turn into lifetime memories for relative strangers.

Navigating this plethora of proceedings regularly can be challenging in itself, taxing our emotional labour constantly, but they also are what makes working in hotels one of the most alluring jobs on the planet. And this allure often takes us away from our families for longer stretches of time than we would like it to. During my career, I have often had to travel abroad for work, stationed overseas from months on end, missing birthdays, anniversaries, and other significant milestones of my family while, ironically, dedicating myself to meticulously ensuring those same celebrations proceed flawlessly when it came to the guests. The missed opportunities with

my family have been my biggest challenge. The only reason I could continue to pursue this career that I love is because I have an incredibly supportive wife and wonderfully understanding children.

How does your hotel contribute to preserving local culture and traditions, and what experiences can guests expect during their stays?

The preservation of the local culture and tradition, quite literally, exists in the bones of InterContinental Dhaka. The original architecture of the property, designed by William B. Tabler was a marriage of the 60’s Modernist structure with the classic motifs of the mansions and palaces of the local aristocracy.

Furthermore, InterContinental Dhaka is also one of the few hotels to still exist today that journeyed through the 1971 Liberation War as an active participant, witnessing the birth of a nation as Bangladesh gained sovereignty. We have a dedicated lounge, the “Mujib Corner”, that exhibits the shared legacy of the hotel with the catalytic events of 1971 as well as paying homage to the contributions of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman towards the freedom movement. The lounge serves as a relevant source of curiosity to our international and local guests alike.

Moreover, we pride ourselves as being a very inclusive hotel, whereby we take care to share in the celebrations of the many diverse communities in the country, offering both foreign and domestic guests a centralized outlet where they may experience and familiarize themselves with the varied facets of Bangladesh in the lap of luxury.

What makes your property stand out from others in your region?

What Inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start?

My interest in the hospitality industry took root at a young age. By age 13, I had a collection of over 2000 hotel brochures, showcasing my early fascination with the field. Seizing the opportunity to turn this passion into a career, I enrolled in the respected Steigenberger Akademie hotel school in Germany, followed by an apprenticeship in Munich, where I received comprehensive training across all hotel departments.

This journey led me through over 25 successful years in the global luxury hospitality industry, guiding me through various roles. My career eventually brought me to Asia, with Thailand as my first destination. Throughout this time, I’ve played a role in the growth and success of luxury villa properties, including overseeing boutique hotels for the AKARYN Hotel Group in Hua Hin and Koh Samui, managing a mountain resort for the Karma Group in Bavaria and as the Group Development Manager for Hotel Management Asia, with

a focus on two luxury villa properties in southern Thailand.

What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in your region, and how is your hotel adapting to these changes?

The future of sustainable tourism in our region is paramount. At The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, we lead this charge with a commitment to eco-friendly practices. Over 90% of our construction materials are locally sourced, minimizing our ecological footprint. Villas feature recycled interiors, showcasing luxury and environmental responsibility.

Our energy-efficient approach includes passive cooling, water elements and ecofriendly architectural elements. We prioritize sustainability with rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Engaging local suppliers, we operate a water fill-up machine in reusable glass bottles, avoid single-use plastics and implement waste control measures.

Adding to our commitment, we practice responsible farm-to-table dining, sourcing over 40 types of vegetables and herbs from The Banjaran organic gardens and Sunway Organic farm, a 10,000 sq. S. working farm nourished by pure water from the lush, jungle-clad mountains.

What inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start?

My father was in the army and as a child we traveled all over India. On various postings I was fascinated by the diversity of people, culture, cuisines, places, and languages. This facilitated a personal journey of curiosity, and the hospitality industry beckoned to me with this intriguing mix.

After graduating with a degree in Economics, I started out as a Corporate Management Trainee at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. I put in the hard yards and worked in all departments of this iconic historical hotel; hands on, in learning the practical and business skills to become a hotelier. From there it was on to luxury properties in Hong Kong, Singapore, Middle East, China and my home Australia.

I am grateful for the outstanding opportunities I have had over my career and the wonderful professionals and mentors who have shaped my journey.

What were some of the significant challenges you faced during your years in the hospitatlity industry and how you overcome them?

I’d like to compare a hotel to a ship. During challenges, it is crucial to be collaborative and adjust the ship’s sails to go in a favorable direction. It’s important to make sure everyone understands the purpose and is pulling in the right direction. As a leader, it is also vital not to get consumed by the crisis, to inspire resilience and keep a broader view on how best to turn challenges into opportunities.

As a result, we are constantly evolving our guest experience. We are focused on attracting, training, and retaining the best talent. We are re-examining if resources are appropriately channeled and leveraging digitization to improve both guest and employee experience. Leisure travel is expected to drive growth, especially in outdoor, beach, and nature-focused destinations. This customer behavior is shaping our future focused vision, strategy and actions.

What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in your region, and how is your hotel adapting to these changes?

Bali is the epitome of sustainable tourism! Hoteliers here are united in preserving the natural beauty of this island and uplifting local communities. We work with communities and organizations across the travel and tourism value chain to improve environmental and social sustainability as well as develop business models that promote economic sustainability.

At Samabe Suites and Villas we adhere to the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, the desire to create a balance between nature and people in their daily lives.

To this end, we have an abundance of native trees and plants, creating a lush eco system for flora and fauna to thrive. We use responsible water management both indoors and outdoors, to minimize wastage. We locally source our produce from farmers and fisherman. We ensure waste reduction by separating rubbish from paper, cardboard, bottles and cans. We use refillable soap and shampoo bottles and are in the process of eliminating single use plastics everywhere.

With Barcelo Foundation, our team is cohesively engaging with not only the whale shark research center but also supporting the local community by buying all possible resources from them such as organic farmed products vegetables, and fruits from the neighbouring local island.

Also, most importantly we are engaging with the local schools to look for local talents and shaping their career in hospitality.

How does your hotel contribute to preserving local culture and traditions, and what experiences can guests expect during their stay?

What Inspired you to join the hospitality industry, and how did you start?

It was by accident. I did motorcycle trial competitions, I ran the Spanish and European junior championships until one day my father stopped sponsoring me as he wanted me to study and have a career. I was lucky that I was able to go to one of the best schools in the world, Glion Hotel School in Switzerland, where I spent 3 years studying Tourism & Hotel Management. I’d always really liked to travel and discover new destinations, immersing myself in its gastronomy and culture.

What were some of the significant challenges you faced during your years in the hospitality industry and how did you overcome them?

Well, with no doubt the most serious was the pandemic. We thought that what was happening in Southeast Asia would not come here and suddenly, from one day to the next, we had to close the hotel and send all the collaborators to their homes. It was

very hard and very sad at the same time. Not only from the business but from the human point of view we tried to help and support them no matter what. Also, we wanted to contribute to our city helping those most in need. For that reason we served 35,000 meals in 1 month together with the Food for Good association, it was very nice.

We opened at a delicate and challenging time but we are extremely satisfied with the way the market has welcomed a brand as prestigious as InterContinental, and the results have been along these lines.

What do you think is the future of sustainable tourism in your region, and how is your hotel adapting to these changes?

We support a qualitative tourism model for Barcelona based on respectful practices in the environmental, economic and sociocultural spheres. It is essential to commit and take real and measurable actions to generate a positive impact on our local community as a way to preserve the future,

keeping Barcelona among the best cities in the world to visit at the same time. It’s our responsibility, as part of the sector, to reduce our environmental impact and to be an active part of this new model.

As a result of our participation in diverse environmental programs, the hotel has been distinguished with the BIOSPHERE© certification from the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) which guarantees compliance with all international sustainability requirements. Initiatives such as IHG Green Engage, an innovative operating and maintenance system that daily monitors the environmental impact derived from hotel operations, and the building of our garden roof, a landscaping project that has allowed the roof that covers the area corresponding to the rooms dedicated to holding meetings, conferences and congresses to be converted into a 2,000m2 semi-intensive garden roof, have materialized our vision of what good practices in sustainability should be.
