Publisher’sLETTER GREETING THE NEW YEAR 2020, THIS ISSUE WE SPONSORED TWO of San Francisco’s beloved events: the San Francisco Ballet’s Opening Night on January 16 and the San Francisco Symphony’s Annual Chinese New Year Concert and Banquet on February 1. Our cover story features Helgi Tómasson, Artistic Director and lead choreographer of San Francisco Ballet for the past 35 years. In an exclusive interview with Haute Living, he shared some insights from his childhood in Iceland and Denmark to his dances at the Joffrey and Harkness Ballets and his 15 years with the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer, an outstanding career that earned worldwide recognition. He danced for George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins who created roles expressly for him. Tómasson joined San Francisco Ballet as artistic director in 1985. He has staged dozens of ballets, including Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo & Juliet, Giselle, Don Quixote, and Nutcracker. The 2020 ballet season will start with the celebration of Tómasson’s 35th year at the Opening Night Gala themed SPELLBOUND, performing vignettes from A Midnight Summer Night’s Dream, Cinderella, and Jewels. You must not miss this unique evening! For equal opportunity coverage of a great female dancer, we profiled Celia Fushille, the amazing Artistic Director since 2007 of Smuin Ballet, San Francisco’s premier contemporary American ballet company. A founding member of Smuin Ballet and its principal dancer for more than 12 years, Fushille worked closely with founder Michael Smuin. In a performing career spanning 25 years, she appeared on stages in the U.S. and Europe, on television, and in film. As Artistic Director, she has expanded the company’s repertoire, adding the work of renowned choreographers while maintaining Smuin’s legacy. I have a nearly allfemale team at Haute Living; her story inspires us. We also feature an exclusive interview with Margaret Liu Collins and Gorretti Lo Lui, who share with us 20 years of history and programs of the San Francisco Symphony’s Chinese New Year Concert and Banquet. This annual concert and impressive, imperial-style banquet unite Chinese from San Francisco, China Town, Silicon Valley, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. The San Francisco Symphony performs Eastern and Western music. This is a beloved, sold-out event for the entire San Francisco community. Collins co-founded this event. Lui and her husband, Lawrence, again generously sponsor and chair the event this year. We are proud to be media sponsor. For your attention to detail

Elegant, Tuscan-style, country estate expertly designed with unparalleled attention to detail. Stunning architectural elements imported from Italy add texture and a sense of history. The fifteenth century Venetian painted ceiling and hand-carved wooden doors are just a few of the features that immediately transport you to the Italian countryside. Dine al fresco in grove of redwoods lit by a chandelier, walk along the meandering stream, or play a spirited game of tennis or bocce ball - all of this and more is offered in a setting that feels remote and private, yet is close to all that the Bay Area has to offer.

Editor-in-Chief ’sLETTER WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME TO BE ALIVE! IT IS BOTH A NEW year and a new decade. For most of us, it is an important time to take inventory of our priorities, set goals, and focus on things that bring us joy. That is exactly what we did at our San Francisco office. We wanted to ensure that we are bringing you, dear reader, stories, profiles, and features that inspires you. While Haute Living is a national media company that showcases the world’s most luxurious brands, in San Francisco our focus has always been a bit different than the rest of the world. Along with being the epicenter of technology, we also lead the charge with philanthropy, wellness, and travel trends. The editorial team wanted to capture the true nature of San Francisco and the wonderful things we find essential here. So, we’ve updated our editorial line up to include subjects that interests you the most, including Wellness, Beauty, and more Personal Profiles of bright leaders in our community. In this issue, we celebrate the performing art with features about famed San Francisco Ballet Artistic Director Helgi Tómasson, Smuin Artistic Director Celia Fushille, along with an intimate interview with San Francisco Symphony’s Chinese New Year gala’s chairs Margaret Liu Collins and Gorretti Lui. Relax and read about the top-ten day spas in town, learn about the latest trends in hairstyles, and rediscover charming Polk Street. Travel to Singapore with our feature about Singapore’s endless summer, discover quaint European towns via river cruise, and adventure to the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe for a family-fun ski vacation. Sit down with icon John Konstin of John’s Grill, meet Yael Ron, the first female general manager of the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco and have a seat with San Francisco’s interior designer Jeff Schlarb. We love hearing from our readers, so feel free to email me with your comments and ideas to Teresa@HauteLivingSF.com. Terrific handling, great power, wonderful comfort, and outstanding luxury: the Continentals deliver it all with ease and grace. Day three brought us a new ride, the all-new

KEN FRANK 40 years of shining bright THROUGHOUT HISTORY, ONLY A FEW CHEFS HAVE MAINTAINED stellar reputations of excellence for over four decades. One of those is chef Ken Frank, who made a name for himself in the Seventies. In the Eighties, Ken Frank became a household name in the culinary world, frequently being labeled a “wunderkind” by the nation’s top food critics. Now, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his Michelin-starred La Toque — a rare accomplishment for a restaurant — Chef Frank’s light still burns bright, illuminating an unquestionable institution in the rarified world of fine cuisine. Chef Frank first achieved national acclaim in 1977, when he was chef of La Guillotine Restaurant at the young age of 21. At that time, he was a pioneer, insisting on using only the freshest, seasonal, quality ingredients. He was part of the opening team at Michael’s in Santa

In 1998, he finally heeded the call of Wine Country and moved north to open a new La Toque in Rutherford, California. The second incarnation of La Toque made its debut in Rutherford at The Rancho Caymus Inn. La Toque was awarded a Michelin Star in 2007, the first year that organization published a San Francisco Bay Area guide. In 2008, Frank moved the restaurant to The Westin Verasa Napa, and the following year it was honored again with a Michelin Star, which it still retains. CREATE DRAMA THIS NEW DECADE Top hair stylists share the magic of a new look Along with the New Year, we beckon in a new decade. So, what could be better than a dramatic—yet easy—change to your looks to welcome 2020? No need to get liposuction or a facelift, one of the simplest and most dramatic ways to change the way you look is with a new hair length or color. We talk to the city’s top hair stylists to find out the latest trends and exciting changes happening in the world of hair. Jerome Molles – Colorist to the Stars of Silicon Valley San Francisco native Jerome Molles began his career at Vidal Sassoon in LA before training in Beverly Hills with world-renowned colorist Tracey Cunningham. While there, Jerome worked

with a celebrity clientele and learned extensive color techniques that shaped him into the master colorist he is today. Passionate about creating gorgeous, lived-in color palettes while maintaining the integrity of the hair, Jerome delivers a transformative salon experience that helps women to feel confident. In the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square at Studio 323, Jerome has become the

Jerome Molles

man behind the hair of Silicon Valley’s most powerful women. Jerome shares his predictions for trends in 2020. “Coppers had a very real moment last fall, but as we are moving into winter, look for lived-in blondes and warm, multidimensional brunettes. Tone-on-tone colors create a soft effect and allow for a subtler regrowth process. Healthy hair is always on-trend. Maintain the integrity of your hair by requesting glosses in deeper tones to adjust the depth of your current highlights and create multidimensional color. The darkness should fade just in time for your spring brightening.” Even a subtle change of your hair color immediately updates your look and increases self-confidence. The key is to work with a colorist who takes your skin tone, natural levels, and lifestyle into consideration. In a world of instant gratification, beautiful hair color that brightens and enhances your natural beauty is far easier than a 30-day cleanse or gym routine.

After moving to the United States in 1994, he soon became recognized as one of the most talented hairstylists in the Washington, D.C. area. Christophe’s talents are quickly expanding into the Bay area. Originally from Normandy, France, Christophe has trained with some of the best names in the beauty industry, including celebrity stylists Jean Mark Maniatas and Christopher and Sonia Dove. He has worked fashion shows in Paris for designers such as Jean Paul Gautlier, Lagerfeld, and Chanel. He has also done work for Oscar DeLa Renta, Vera Wang, and Reem Acra. Several magazines, including Allure, Washingtonian, I Do, Baltimore Bride, and Elegant Bride, feature his work. Christophe’s a passion for doing hair extensions and for formal events has made him one of the most desired stylists on the D.C. social circuit and given him the opportunity to travel around the world. Christophe’s philosophy is that great hair doesn’t have to be what’s fashionable at the time; it may not always work. He believes in partnering with each client to create that person’s individual style and look. “With the right look, each person will be able to move through life with confidence and style,” says Christophe. “I am passionate about the chance to change someone’s looks in a few hours without surgery, without too much time. the season, the change can be dramatic — up to 10 inches of new hair. One day you could have a short bob, and the next day you can have long, flowing locks of this hair.” Christophe can add three to four different shades. He states, “I have done multiple bright colors, like pink, purple, or yellow — you can add it and there is no damage to your hair and you are not stuck with a silly color for six months. Haute SHOPPING SHOP Two of Polk Street’s best and most charming shops are Molte Cose — specializing in men’s fashion and vintage items — and Bella Cose —selling vintage kitchenware, lingerie and mid-century items. The shops are interconnected, though they have separate entrances. Here you find everything from sleek men’s bow ties and cufflinks to vintage women’s boudoir attire. Long one of SF’s best cheese shops, Cheese Plus also offers charcuterie, wine, beer, and food items like Tuscan olive oil or local honey. Locals also go for the sandwiches, many with neighborhood names and NorCal references, like the Monterey tuna salad sandwich packed with capers, roasted red peppers, cornichons, and kalamata olives. Established in 1974, Russian Hill Bookstore survives as one of the last independent used and new bookstores in the city. MARRAKECH MENTALITY Creating a genuine dialogue with Moroccan landscapes and culture, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s vision in her Cruise 2020 collection for Dior came from the mystifying geographical crossroad itself—a place where creatives and explorers and the inquisitive minds of the world collectively sought inspiration. The varied textures, fabrics and finishes in the extensive collection aptly reflect Morocco’s rooted diversity, particularly in the special wax print fabric sourced from the country; it serves as a very real metaphor for its “melting pot”-like nature, bringing together people from all walks of life. With each of her collections for the House, Maria Grazia Chiuri—taking this notion one step further—so effortlessly and respectfully blends elements of heritage with a modern identity, creating something so new, so fresh, so unmistakably Dior.

ACH NOVEMBER, THE NAPA VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL BRINGS HOLLYWOOD TO Wine Country. And though the long weekend celebration is built around film, that’s really only the starting point. Because it’s Napa, amazing food and wine are part of the package. Celebrating its ninth anniversary, the 2019 festival featured more than 80 films, screened between Wednesday, November 13, and Sunday, November 17. Here are my top ten highlights from the Patron Circle Experience, during which guests enjoyed reserved seating at screenings, invitations to special events, luxurious vintner dinners, and more …

BARRE NONE ONE OF ONLY A FEW FEMALE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS IN THE MALE-DOMINATED UPPER RANKS OF BALLET, A FORMER DANCER’S JOURNEY TO LEADING LADY BEGAN WITH WAITING PATIENTLY IN THE WINGS. BY STEPH KEAY

Celia Fushille, prima ballerina turned artistic director of San Francisco’s Smuin Contemporary Ballet. Photo credit: Chris Hardy.

Celia Fushille’s decades of dancing are apparent in her flawless posture. Though petite, she is a powerhouse—one might never guess she is one of only 12 women who lead a major ballet company in the United States. Despite her eventual prima ballerina status and even a small role in Star Wars, Fushille was quite shy in her formative years. She first enrolled in dance classes at the age of four but relegated herself to the corner of the room, too shy to participate. The fifth of seven children in a large Catholic family living in El Paso, Texas, Fushille grew up with a strict father who emphasized the importance of academia. She never dreamt of becoming a professional ballerina, much less the artistic director of San Francisco’s wildly innovative Smuin Contemporary Ballet. When Fushille turned eight, she begged her mother to let her try dancing again. “I don’t know what inspired me to make another attempt, but I fell in love with it,” she says. She prevailed, receiving a scholarship to the San Francisco Ballet School when she turned 13. Surprisingly, it was Fushille’s scholarly father who recognized her gift for the discipline and encouraged her to pursue it professionally. “[He] came to love ballet and took an interest in it like a father normally takes to a son’s Little League baseball,” she recalls. As an SFB summer student, Fushille attended dress rehearsals, admiring the action from afar in the darkened balcony of the Geary Theater. There she would hear the voice of SFB’s artistic director—Tony Awardwinning choreographer and showman Michael Smuin—booming over the “God Mic” in the theater. “He was an imposing, yet charismatic, director to an aspiring dancer,” she says. “I was transfixed by what I saw on the stage.” Thanks to a guest teacher who grabbed Fushille by the wrist, dragged her over, and proclaimed, “Michael, Celia is a good dancer. You should hire her!” and Fushille’s own diligence, she went on to become an apprentice at SFB. She toured with the company across the US and Europe and performed highly technical works such as Balanchine’s Symphony in C in the hallowed War Memorial Opera House.

It’s such a San Francisco moment, sitting with John Konstin at 112-year-old John’s Grill at the table his father once called a favorite. It’s a busy Friday afternoon in December, and the restaurant is packed with delighted holiday shoppers. On the table draped with white cloth, in front of us is a reporter’s notebook and a famous Jack LaLanne’s Favorite Salad piled high with crab, shrimp, avocado, and seasonal greens. How has John’s family been successful stewards of this legendary spot for the past four decades, a place sought out by both Dashiell Hammett and Dianne Feinstein? Let’s find out.

companied the reading as original artwork by Gretchen Schields was projected above the stage. Amy Tan also read from her book The Joy Luck Club, while the symphony played music from the film’s soundtrack. Grammy-nominated erhu (Chinese violin) player Jiebing Chen played “The Butterfly Lover’s” concerto. On January 18th, The Foolish Magistrate’s Fanfare, a lavish pre-concert party, was held in the Green Room of the War Memorial Veterans Building and catered by Yank Sing Restaurant. This beautiful first celebration was chaired by Ann Getty and acclaimed Bay Area actor/director Joan Chen. HL: WHEN DID YOU START YOUR INVOLVEMENT? MLC: I chaired the event in 2002, 2003, and 2004. During those three years, SFS Resident Conductor Edwin Outwater conducted the symphony for each Chinese New Year concert. The 2004, program featured the Chinese ensemble Melody of China performing with traditional Chinese instruments in a salute to Cantonese and Beijing opera with Cantonese opera star Wong Chi Ming (performing Cantonese opera in full costume), and the world premiere of Chinese Opera Suite by local composer Gang Situ. This event was recognized with the 2004 MetLife Award for Excellence in Community Engagement. In 2003, the symphony performed the final movement from Gang Situ’s “Double Concerto” with Jiebing Chen and SFS violinist Nadya Tichman. Soprano ManHua Gao made her SFS debut singing Rossini’s “Bel raggio lusinghier” from Semiramide, Zheng Qiufeng’s “I Love you, China,” and other traditional Chinese works. In 2002, the Year of the Horse, the program featured Tan Dun’s Academy Award-winning music from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a world premiere of “Red Seal – Strings Calligraphy II” by local composer Gang Situ, and “The Butterfly Lovers” concerto performed by Grammy-nominated erhu (Chinese violin) player Jiebing Chen.

HL: WOW, HOW COULD YOU TOP THESE? MLC: I couldn’t and passed the baton to Jessa Wu who chaired in 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2005, her program featured world premieres of two new works by Gang Situ written especially for this concert: “Echoes,” which feature members of Chinese music ensemble Melody of China performing with traditional instruments, and “Festival Suite,” a work honoring various traditional Chinese festivals. Nine-year-old Tyler Thompson performed traditional Chinese Opera in his SFS debut. This event was recognized with the 2005 American Symphony Orchestra League Gold Ribbon Award for fundraising. In 2006, the program featured the world premiere of “Drum” overture Gang Situ, written especially for this concert and featuring Melody of China with Wu Man, an internationally renowned virtuoso of the pipa performing music by Tan Dun; and 18-year-old piano prodigy Yuja Wang performing the Grieg Piano Concerto (SFS debut). In recognition of the orchestra’s far-reaching commitment to community and audience-building activities, including the annual Chinese New Year concert, the SF Symphony received the prestigious 2006 Wallace Foundation Award. The award, which was one of only two given to California organizations, recognizes the San Francisco Symphony’s extensive efforts to increase audiences for classical music. The 2006 CNY Concert kicked off the Symphony’s first tour to China, featuring

concerts in Hong Kong and Shanghai conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. HL: GORRETTI, WHEN DID YOU START YOUR SPONSORSHIP IN THIS CELEBRATION? Gorretti Lui: I started in 2011, the Year of the Rabbit. Carolyn Kuan conducted the concert and the program featured Li Bo, one of the world’s most accomplished morin khuur (horsehair fiddle) players performing his own composition, “The Tale of Matou Qin;” violinist Ray Chen in his SFS debut performing Beethoven’s “Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1,” and Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen;” and Tan Dun’s “Overture: Dragon and Phoenix” from Heaven Earth Mankind. The concert also included traditional Chinese works: “Fung Yang Drum Song” arranged by Nakagama and “Plum Blossoms in the Snow” arranged by Zi Huang. We had the post-concert Imperial Dinner, co-chaired by Yurie Pascarella and Jennie Chiu, in grand rotunda at San Francisco’s City Hall. HL: YOU RETURNED TO HOST IN 2019, WHEN I ATTENDED. One other fun item last year was the special appearance by LiLou the pig — San Francisco’s very own and first-ever therapy pig. Dramatic video projections by Adam Larsen reflected the theme of “Dîner en Rouge” at the post-concert banquet at Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall. Dinner guests were treated to a musical moment by Alisa Gasperi. Mayor London Breed was the honorary chair. HL: WHAT OTHER MEMORABLE EVENTS HIGHLIGHTED PAST CELEBRATIONS? GL: In 2018, the concert was dedicated to the Honorable Edwin Mah Lee, 43rd mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, who passed away unexpectedly before the New Year celebration. This was a bittersweet moment of sadness for our beloved Chinese mayor. Each year, there are always great programs and fabulous banquets to remember. Past chairs XiaoJun Lee , Iris Chan, Patti Lee Hoffman, Sharon Seto and Mindy Sun, all did amazing jobs contributing to this wonderful event in the last 20 years using the international language if

about 300 seats left of the 2,700 seats at Davis Symphony Hall, and I am sure it will be sold out soon, too. HL: WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THIS ANNUAL EVENT FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO COMMUNITY? GL: I think we succeeded in bringing the Chinese from China Town, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and Silicon Valley and uniting them each year to celebrate the Chinese New Year together with the San Francisco Symphony and with our Bay Area community friends and supporters. The event proceeds benefit the San Francisco Symphony’s music education for Bay Area schools and community engagement programs. A JETE’ INTO SAN FRANCISCO BALLET’S 2020 SEASON BY MARIA CASTELLUCCI • PHOTOS BY DREW ALTIZER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND LEAD CHOREOGRAPHER FOR ONE of the greatest ballet schools in the world, Mr. Helgi Tómasson is highly regarded as a master of dance, one of refined technique and poetic grace, whose musicality unveils a true gift for exquisite choreography. His artistry has adorned center stage, marking this his 35th year as director of the SF Ballet. To celebrate this momentous milestone, San Francisco will kick off the 2020 ballet season embracing the spirit in unprecedented fashion: think dreamy, bemused enchantment from vignettes of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to whimsical Cinderella and dashes of Jewels. This year’s opening night gala, SPELLBOUND, is sure to rouse your senses and awaken the dancer within you. To date, he has led over 40 choreographed ballets under his own company and has earned global reputation and recognition as one of the alltime greats. Talent now comes to him, as San Francisco Ballet is regarded as one of our world’s finest dance institutions under Helgi’s leadership. In observance of this jovial occasion, SF Ballet will open its 2020 dance season with a spectacular gala honoring Tómasson’s 35th year as Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer. In an exclusive interview with Tómasson, he shared some insight spanning from his childhood memories to this year’s gala selections. Tómasson’s mother introduced him to this beautiful art form. After witnessing his first ballet performance by the Royal Danish Ballet in Iceland

as a 5-year-old boy, he was hooked. His mother would find him reenacting performances in the living room, dancing around and trying to mimic what he had seen on stage. “I have vague memories of light, color, music, and, of course, movement. Every time there was music playing on the radio, I tried to do what I saw, the jumps, leaps, and turns,” Tómasson reminisced. He stresses the importance of parents exposing their children to the arts. “You never know what is going to trigger. Here I am at my age, directing this wonderful company, and if it hadn’t been for this one performance my mother took me to, I might never had been here.” Tómasson touches upon the European and American forms of dance, the differences and the similarities: from the names of the ballet steps being universal and classical to the influx of modern and contemporary movement be-

coming increasingly popular and widely used in conjunction with more classical acts. Both continents have benefitted from this greater contemporary style. “I try to hire and engage to work for the SF Ballet one who has a good knowledge of the classical technique with contemporary influence of movement and how they see dance. This is what diversifies us,” he says. Under Tómasson’s direction, Yuányuán Tán, principal dancer from Shanghai, has delighted audiences for a quarter century. Promoted to principal dancer in 1997, she has earned merits regionally and internationally in roles from Juliet in Romeo & Juliet to Giselle in Giselle to Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and beyond, comprising a truly impressive résumé. Named “Hero of Asia” by Time magazine, Tán brings highly regarded, international influence to our stage. Under Tómasson’s team of talent and direction, this season ignites tremendous excitement and curiosity.

What inspired these selections? Tómasson: “I like to bring a new work to the gala each year, whether it be a pas de deux or a short piece. It’s a wonderful opportunity for choreographers to explore new ideas. This year, for the first time in 30 years, I decided to ask three choreographers to create new pas de deux or pas de trois for opening night. What

His choreography is rooted in classicism, but is influenced by all forms of movement, from modern dance to the dances of far off regions and cultures. “Yuri Possokhov is our choreographer in residence, and is in demand across the globe, creating works everywhere from the Joffrey to Bolshoi Ballet. I brought Yuri to the company in 1994, and he danced with us for 12 years before transitioning to choreography full-time, a transition I pushed him towards after seeing what an exceptional talent he had. “The third world premiere is by our current corps de ballet member Myles Thatcher, who is well into his career as a choreographer, though he’s still in his twenties and dancing. Just a few years ago, he was the first corps member in at least three decades to choreograph a new work for our subscription season. He’s since created a handful of works for us, including one of the ballets from our 2018 Unbound festival. I’m looking forward to seeing how these pieces play altogether.

“Our three world premieres are complemented by a robust program that showcases the immense talent and capability of our dancers. I find myself in awe and filled with pride every year at this event.” HL: How does SF Ballet continue to keep its level of global prestige? Tómasson: “Cultivating a global presence was a focus of mine since the early days. Being Icelandic and spending my early years dancing in Europe, before eventually coming to the United States and spending many years as a principal dancer in New York, I saw the art

form through an international lens. Creating personal connections with some of the best choreographers in the world, bringing them out to San Francisco, inviting some of the greatest dancers and artists out there to come work for us—it put San Francisco and the West Coast on the map in a new way and offered something special to our community here as well. “This company has also valued touring since the beginning, and I’ve continued to push our sights to new places and cities. We’ve been all over the world—in this past year to Copenhagen and London, but in recent memory also to Shanghai and Beijing, Paris, Moscow, Spoleto, and to Reykjavik, Iceland. We’re local to San Francisco, but our art is universal and part of representing where we’re from.” Sincere passion and dedication to excellence have driven Tómasson in earning supreme merits in this artistic expression. Selections enveloped with technicality, lyrical measure, and supreme artistic definition open this year’s ballet season. “I try to show the audience everything ballet can be. It’s such an exciting and beautiful art form.”

Tómasson’s Nutcracker version is unique to San Francisco, set in our city by the bay during the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker; meanwhile, Tómasson has made this holiday tradition one of a kind in his own style specific to San Francisco. His prolific chorographical talents make Tómasson a unique and unprecedented asset to San Francisco’s cultural community and beyond. The way that ballet seems to defy physics, by being controlled and exuberant at the same time, and how movement connects music with emotion, is something that we all need in an era in which our world has become as small as the devices we hold in our hands. I think dance gives us peripheral vision: it is three-dimensional and almost forces us to look up, take notice, and see what happens beyond our screens and ourselves. Excellence transcends all art forms, be it music, opera, or ballet. That standard of excellence that is a signature of Tómasson’s artistic leadership is what attracted me to SF Ballet. First-year executive director for the SF Ballet is Kelly Tweeddale. Her arrival brings added buzz and excitement to this year’s gala and programming. One strong attribute of the SF Ballet Company is their gift of empowerment to local youth, a level of inspiration that Tweeddale can take and extend beyond the walls of the performing arts theatre. “Often, a music, art, or dance class at school or a trip to a community center is the child’s first exposure a child has to the arts. With the 40th anniversary of SF’s

SF Ballet Student Showcase Marlene and Helgi Tomasson, Richard Barkar, Catherine Schmidt

Dance in Schools and Communities Program, this year we can extend that reach even further. I believe we have one of the most creative generations ever to have existed before us,” notes Tweeddale. Celebrating her first gala, Tweeddale and Haute Living take a closer look at her educational insights for this year and beyond. In asking Tweeddale how the educational forums and programs have shaped the SF Ballet of today, she comments: “To me, ballet has always been way ahead of other art forms in the commitment to invest in how we train the next generation of artists. Training facilities are an investment in the pipeline, both by creating the future dancers, but also choreographers, audience members, and advocates. We also know that the impact of SF Ballet School is seen not only on our stages, but on stages around the world as alumni find professional careers at leading companies. It reminds us that we as a company exist not only to keep the art form alive and evolving, but that ballet is a human endeavor that transcends both past and present. One important element about the SF Ballet School is the concept of mentorship. Technique can be taught, but mentorship is how the traditions of the company, the aesthetics of the art form, and safeguarding the well-being of future professional dancers are transferred from the professional to the trainee.” The future of SF Ballet Company feels bright. The longevity of commitment to excellence, precision, and the simple act of bringing refined culture and promise to our community and our youth holds the standards high. The institutional training involved at this level showcases immense passion and pledge in bringing the highest form of this medium to our local stage. “That is the power of what we do, putting ideas into action. And, in our case, it’s physical action, using the body and mind to make a statement,” notes Tweeddale. With such significance and commitment to this art form and with intense affection and fervor in showcasing the greatest agility and elegance on San Francisco’s stage, all while giving back to our community, there’s no question the longevity of SF Ballet Company stands tall and strong and enjoys immeasurable support. At the helm with continued promise to quality sits Mr. Helgi Tómasson, our leader, our luminary, bright as can be, as robust a leader as one can have, who imparted these final words to Haute Living: “For me, the amazement of what the human body can do to create such beauty through the body’s movement and body’s language is outstanding. It takes years to perfect; yet, when I see it done extremely well on stage, I am in awe. You don’t need the spoken word to know what’s going on. That, to me, is very exciting.”

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS Supporting California’s Wine Country After the Kincade Fire I’LL NEVER FORGET THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO SONOMA after I moved from San Francisco to Rutherford, a bucolic hamlet in Napa Valley, in 2015. At Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville to attend the opening night of the ninth annual Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, another guest asked me where I lived. I replied, “Napa.” He quipped, “Isn’t that an auto parts store?” While folks in Sonoma Valley may joke about Napa Valley, both regions get along as well as wine and cheese. One area may be perceived as being ritzier and more sophisticated than the other, which is the birthplace of California wine (I don’t need to tell you which is which), but together the two valleys make up the two best-known components of California’s Wine Country. Although separated by a mountain range, they are intertwined in the eyes of many. When one hurts, so does the other. That was most evident during the Kincade Fire, which started northeast of Geyserville on October 23, 2019, and burned more than 77,000 acres, largely beyond where most visitors go, before it was contained on November 6. While the wildfire may not have spread to Napa Valley, thanks to the Farmhouse Inn

brave firefighters who risked their lives to ensure this, Napa Valley was still greatly affected. Many Napa Valley businesses have employees who

LIVING IN THE RESOLUTION ZONE WITH DR. BARRY SEARS Resolving inflammation: reduce it, resolve it and repair it. THE ZONE — WE’VE ALL EXPERIENCED IT AND ATHletes talk about it—those peak moments when your energy is optimal, no task seems insurmountable, and you could easily conquer the world. For some of us, these moments are sustainable; for others, unfortunately, they’re fleeting. Whether we reach or stay in the Zone is determined not so much by our personal drive, but rather by an ongoing, behind the scenes, bio-chemical drama and its cast of characters, a.k.a. the chemical processes busy at work in our bodies throughout the day. In the mid-90s, I first learned about the work of Dr. Barry Sears from an athletic and health-obsessed friend when Sears published The Zone (more than 2 million hardcover copies sold and a #1 New York Times best-seller). He is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response and

a former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Sears’ passionate and relentless decades-long research pursuit has elevated food and our perception of it from more than simply a source of calories to being recognized as an exceptionally powerful drug — with one caveat — when carefully calibrated. He calls this the Zone Pro-Resolution Nutrition system. It’s fascinating to follow the evolution of Sears’ research.

Measuring the Markers: How well are you doing? Besides the more obvious markers of homocysteine and CRP that are most often used to measure inflammation, to drill down further, Sears suggests the following:

Step One: Diet plays a critical role in reducing inflammation.

ASPIRATIONAL LIFE HACKS: QUEEN MERYL BY ERIN CARLSON A life well lived on one’s own terms — isn’t that the goal? Meryl Streep’s story reveals instructive gems even for us mere mortals. An unpopular kid from New Jersey whom an early casting director considered too ugly for the part becomes the unchallenged queen of the silver screen! This is an epic journey, the kind that only a seasoned entertainment journalist and novelist can guide. Luckily, San Francisco-based author Erin Carlson is on the case. She tells Haute Living: “Digging into Meryl Streep’s extraordinary life and career, I discovered the real source of her longevity in Hollywood: confidence, and grit. At 70 years old, she remains in the game more than ever, whether stealing scenes as Aunt March in the new adaptation of Little Women or fueling content for funny internet memes and GIFs. She has truly earned the title of Queen Meryl.” APPROACHABLE MINDFULNESS: JOY ON DEMAND BY CHADE-MENG TAN Self-help books can feel awash in unattainable woowoo, but the Dalai Lama’s pal and one of Google’s first engineers, Chade-Meng Tan, writes important mindfulness books that are as positive habit-forming

AUDRA MCDONALD SERENADES ST. JOSEPH’S ARTS SOCIETY Ken Fulk and friends celebrated the first anniversary of St. Joseph’s Arts Society on a high note, welcoming Audra McDonald for a memorable serenade. The 6-time Tony winner captivated the audience with her warm banter and incomparable soprano which elevated Broadway ballads to a form of worship. Deconsecrated, St. Josephs’ Church is now a chic private club dedicated to creativity and sociability. The event raised funds to support emerging artists. Noted New York theatre producer Mark Cortale and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich hosted the festivities which drew a vibrant crowd of techies, titans, and theatre buffs. They were sustained by delectable bites from Tosca Café, revived by Fulk, chef Nancy Oakes, and restauranteur Anna Weinberg. HauteRESIDENCE Albany Marina

THE OCEANSIDE COMMUNITY OF ALBANY, BAHAMAS THE NEW YORK TIMES CALLS IT “A RARE FIND,” WHILE FORBES DESCRIBES IT AS THE MODERN Monaco. Since opening in 2010, the 600-acre luxury resort community of Albany has been recognized as a place where families can play, live, and work. This majestic oceanside community was the collective vision of its founders —Tavistock Group founded by Joe Lewis, golfing greats Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, and actor/musician Justin Timberlake. They wanted to create something special that appealed to every age and stage. Today, Albany’s resort-style setting, combines with stellar service, amenities, luxury, and privacy to create a sophisticated enclave recognized around the world. Situated minutes from Nassau’s international airport, Albany has established itself as the next great sophisticated enclave and a true sportsman’s paradise. Among its growing, world-class features is one of the Caribbean’s largest berthing facilities, the 71-slip mega-yacht marina for yachts up to 250 feet; a 7,400yard, links-style desert golf course designed by Els for all levels of the game; a luxury spa and salon; and numerous family-oriented and adult-minded amenities and recreational outlets, including pools, a racquet complex, and an expansive fitness center with CrossFit, multiple dining venues, and equestrian facilities. Perhaps another part that makes Albany so attractive is the multitude of real estate lifestyle options, ranging from charming beachfront villas and luxury marina residences to Bahamian-inspired courtyard villas and estate homes with golf, ocean, or equestrian access and views. Numerous custom home lots are available within Albany with a variety of types — some overlooking the championship golf course, a collection just steps from the beach, and the latest offering surrounding the planned equestrian center.
