SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1933 AS THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL ballet company in the United States, San Francisco Ballet has served as an innovator in the art form and an originator of beloved cultural traditions, from staging the first American production of Swan Lake to annually producing generationally cherished Nutcracker. A trailblazer in dance locally, nationally, and internationally, SF Ballet balances an innovative focus on new and contemporary choreography with a deeply held dedication to the classics. This season, the company’s programming includes high-drama story ballets, inventive contemporary voices, and works rarely seen by U.S. audiences.

Curated by Artistic Director Tamara Rojo, this season will feature ballets envisioned by Rojo and Sir Kenneth MacMillan, a quartet of ballets by Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, and works by innovative contemporary choreographers Christopher Wheeldon, Akram Khan, Wayne McGregor, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. The company also announced its first international tour since 2019, to the Teatro Real in Madrid. Its roster includes returning principal dancers, Dores André and Max Cauthorn, as well as newly promoted and appointed soloists and corps de ballet dancers.

The January 25, 2025, Opening Gala is followed by works such as Manon, Cool Britannia, Rojo’s own Raymonda, Frankenstein, a tribute to Hans van Manen, Broken Love, a double bill of two standout hits from the 2024 season, Ashton’s Marguerite and Armand, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Broken Wings. As always, beloved family holiday favorite NutcrackerNutcracker is staged throughout the month of December; this year celebrates the 20th anniversary of this Bay Area tradition.

New this season is SF Ballet’s partnership with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), in which local talent is commissioned to create new stage drapes for season productions. Not new this season are SF Ballet School’s education and community programs which help to cultivate the next generation of professional dancers for ballet companies around the world. Grounded in strong classical technique, the school brings a sense of energy, freedom, and joy to dance, and emphasizes the importance of a well-rounded, multidisciplinary artistic training. Nearly 70% of San Francisco Ballet dancers trained at SF Ballet School, and students in the school appear in SF Ballet productions throughout the season.

AS THE LEAVES BEGIN TO CHANGE AND THE AIR TURNS CRISP, the San Francisco Opera is set to unveil its 102nd season, led by the dynamic Caroline H. Hume Music Director, Eun Sun Kim. The festivities kick off on September 6 with the much-anticipated Opera Ball and a captivating concert in Golden Gate Park on September 8.

The San Francisco Opera will launch the 2024-2025 season on September 6 with the Opera Ball and the performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera. This is the SF Opera’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and it’s the most glamorous opening night experience. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with walking the red carpet to an exquisite cocktail reception. Following is an enchanting culinary spectacle at City Hall, prepared by McCalls Catering at 6 p.m. then, at the War Memorial Opera House, the 8 p.m. opening night performance of Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) starring tenor Michael Fabiano. When the curtain falls at the opera, guests will return to City Hall at 11 p.m. for an after-party of dancing to live music or spend time in the lounge with libations, bites, and excellent company.

“I think this season will continue to engage and delight our audience with new work and some incredible classics and audience favorites. We have had two very successful seasons with increasing ticket sales that are even above our pre-pandemic attendance,” says Jack Calhoun, president of the board.

OPERA KICKS OFF 102 ND SEASON WITH OPERA BALL AND CONCERT IN THE PARK

The fall season is packed with exciting performances, including the West Coast premiere of Poul Ruders and Paul Bentley’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which runs from September 14 to October 1. This gripping adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel explores a dystopian future and showcases talented artists such as mezzosoprano Irene Roberts. Additionally, audiences can look forward to Wagner’s monumental Tristan und Isolde and a special performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to mark its 200th anniversary.

This season, as always, SFS attracts world class musicians, soloists, and conductors, providing guests the opportunity to experience performances by some of the best talents in the field This season also includes a fond farewell to Music Director EsaPekka Salonen, whose five-year tenure culminates in June 2025.

“Over his time as music director, Esa-Pekka has brought with him a palpable spirit of collaboration and adventure that has inspired our musicians, staff, board, and audiences to think more expansively about the possibilities of the orchestral experience,” said San Francisco Symphony CEO Matthew Spivey, who acknowledged Salonen’s leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “His work with the orchestra has made a lasting impact on this organization. Esa-Pekka is an unparalleled artist and visionary, and I am deeply grateful for what his creative leadership has brought to the San Francisco Symphony.”

Highlights of Salonen’s final season as music director include the September 25 Opening Gala with superstar pianist Lang Lang performing Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Throughout the season, Salonen will conduct the orchestra in 12 programs bookended by two massive, showstopping works:

Verdi’s Requiem (September 19-21) and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection (June 12-14). Throughout the season, Salonen will conduct world premieres of works by Nico Muhly, Xavier Muzik, and Gabriella Smith, as well as the first SFS performances of his own Cello Concerto and Magnus Lindberg’s Chorale. Salonen will continue his exploration of the works of Igor Stravinsky, welcome familiar guest artists and up-and-coming talent, and lead the orchestra in interpretations of significant works from Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Sibelius, Strauss, and Verdi, among others.

Guest artists making their SFS Orchestral Series debuts this season include sopranos Lucy Crowe, Amanda Forsythe, Leah Hawkins, and Liv Redpath; mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill; countertenor John Holiday; tenor Arnold Livingston Geis; baritones Will Liverman and Douglas Williams; pianists Michelle Cann, Francesco Piemontesi, and Alexandre Tharaud; and violinist Sayaka Shoji. Rainer Eudeikis, San Francisco Symphony’s principal cello and Philip S. Boone Chair, makes his Orchestral Series debut as soloist, giving the first SFS performances of Salonen’s Cello Concerto

Returning instrumental soloists include violinists Ray Chen, Isabelle Faust, Hilary Hahn, and Gil Shaham; pianists Kirill Gerstein, Hélène Grimaud, Gabriela Montero, Víkingur Ólafsson, Conrad Tao, Daniil Trifonov, and Yuja Wang; and cellist Johannes Moser. Returning vocalists include tenor Mario Chang, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, bass Eric Owens, soprano Susanna Phillips, and baritone Michael Sumuel. “EsaPekka’s time as music director has been artistically rewarding and exciting for our whole organization,” said San Francisco Symphony Board Chair Priscilla Geeslin. “I’m looking forward to experiencing his creativity and artistry through his final programs in this role during the 2024-25 season.”

FRESCOBALDI WINERY

On an island off the Tuscan coast, Maria Grazia Giampiccolo, the former prison director of the Gorgona Agricultural Penal Colony, the last penal island in Europe, recognized the potential for a winemaking program using the vineyards planted by monks long ago. She contacted over 200 wineries in Italy to collaborate, but only Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi of Tuscany’s Frescobaldi Winery responded. The Frescobaldi family has been making wine for over 700 years and is one of Italy’s leading wineries.

What is now the Gorgona Project is a beacon of hope, offering redemption and second chances to inmates. The project paves the way for their successful reintegration into society upon release by involving them in the vineyards and winery to learn valuable skills they can utilize upon reentry. Currently, 62 inmates are part of this transformative social project, and since its inception in 2012, 100 inmates have participated.

Still, Gorgona is a maximum-security facility. All participating inmates have committed serious crimes (unrelated to the mafia). To be placed on Gorgona, inmates must not have psychiatric issues or drug use problems. Upon release, trained inmates are offered

employment at Frescobaldi estates, with salaries on par with those of other Frescobaldi workers. Twenty-five inmates have opted to work at Frescobaldi estates, five of whom are currently employed.

When asked if he foresees extending the Gorgona model to other prisons, Frescobaldi pauses before saying that a prison in Washington State had inquired. It was a no-go when the American side explained the prisoners could work the vineyards but could not make the wine, as they were not allowed access to alcohol. For Frescobaldi, that was a dealbreaker. He believes involvement in the entire winemaking cycle is imperative to the prisoners’ sense of accomplishment.

JACKSON FAMILY WINES

Sonoma County’s Jackson Family Wines boasts a globally renowned portfolio of wine brands, annually producing over 5 million cases of wine, but what truly distinguishes them is their unwavering dedication to philanthropy. Breakfast is three courses spread over two hours with the option to add on either a 5-kilometer run with Durham or a serene morning meditation with Wołosz. Set aside three hours to enjoy a five-course lunch, an immersive experience allowing guests seated on bar-height chairs at the butcher block counter to easily observe and interact with their hosts who move graciously around the range, an island made by Boos Block. Among the popular staples are an herb and cheese soufflé; dates stuffed with two types of blue cheese and almonds, wrapped with bacon, roasted, and drizzled with balsamic vinegar; and “Cracker Jeff,” Durham’s elevated spin on Cracker Jack® with the peanuts swapped out for cashews, walnuts, and pecans and with sour cherry molasses, pomegranate molasses, sumac, and cayenne. WINE COUNTRY ELEVATES PAIRINGS TO AN ART FORM

NOT TOO LONG AGO, VISITORS TO WINERIES HAD LIMITED food options, and restaurant goers had to rely on servers for wine suggestions to pair with their meals. However, the wine scene in Northern California has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, and the new norm that deserves attention is a heightened focus on culinary excellence.

While not all wineries in Northern California offer food pairings, some do much more than provide them: they hire on-site chefs and create culinary experiences typically found in full-service gourmet restaurants. And it’s not just the wineries; restaurants are raising the bar high, too. These Napa and Sonoma spots are setting new standards using leading wine and bites experts who have made the traditional cheese and charcuterie board a thing of the past.

1. CAKEBREAD CELLARS

One sure sign that you are in for a culinary treat is an on-site garden promising as-fresh-as-it-gets dishes. Cakebread’s executive chef, Brian Streeter, has been highlighting Cakebread Cellars’ world class wines with seasonal, product-driven menus since 1989. His expertise shines in his hands-on cooking classes at the winery and an annual American Harvest Workshop at the winery’s Rutherford location, a four-day “boot camp” for chefs, sommeliers, press, and consumers.

For the Perfect Pair tasting, Cakebread’s culinary team gets creative with whatever’s growing in the winery’s garden. The wines are paired with inventive bites like red flint corn polenta with

burrata, chiles, and artichokes. Another sublime summer pairing— little gem lettuces grilled with harissa shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and a preserved lemon dressing paired with 2020 Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Reserve.

2. B CELLARS

Napa Valley’s B Cellars Oakville Trek tasting starts with a tour of B Cellars’ garden and estate grounds and concludes with a seated wine and food pairing. If you’re lucky, the man behind it all, chef Derick Kuntz, will stop by your table for a chat.

His pairings include 2022 B Cellars Rosé with báhn mi lettuce wrap (pork loin, Fresno chili aioli, and pickled vegetables) and 2022 Game Farm Vineyard Sangiovese with tempura squash blossom and ratatouille with basil pesto and cherry tomato.

3. FARMHOUSE INN

One benefit of restaurant over winery pairings is that most restaurants are not tied to a winery and can incorporate a wide variety of libations in their pairings. Farmhouse Inn is a perfect example, using everything from Vincent Joudart Brut Réserve Côte des Blancs Champagne to Kamonishiki Junmai Daiginjo Nama Niigata from Japan. Two recent notable pairings are abalone shell with 2022 Processus Maria Gomes Western Cape, South Africa, and apple mooncake with 2005 Château RaymondLafon en Magnum Sauternes.

4. THE MATHESON

Set in the culinary town of Healdsburg, The Matheson’s culinary level is exceptionally high. So, when owner Dustin Valette’s wine, 2021 Valette Wines Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, was awarded 100 points, the wine pairings were already destined for greatness. Owen Bargreen (Vinous and Decanter magazines) loved the wine, writing that it is “a must-taste for any lover of Napa Cabernet.” Chef Valette paired his prized wine with butter roasted “eye of ribeye” with preserved blackberry, garlic confit, beef bushi, and black truffle.

Valette’s chief operating officer, Michael Riel, summarized the restaurant’s philosophy: “We believe that food and wine belong together and become more enjoyable when paired right.”

5. SEQUOIA GROVE

Sequoia Grove is known for its location, which is flanked by towering sequoia redwoods, and for being one of the first five Napa Valley vineyards certified under Napa Green guidelines. Inside its 1908 tasting barn surrounded by sustainably farmed vineyards, Sequoia Grove’s executive chef, Spencer Conaty, showcases the variety of ways Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon may be paired with food. Conaty’s background in Japanese and Michelin-starred cuisine brings a unique twist, complementing the flavors in the wines in unexpected ways.

Experience a multi-course tasting to discover the surprising versatility of Cabernet Sauvignon when placed in an expert chef’s hands. But unlike at the Orpheum or the Curran, this performance encourages audience participation, its principals more than happy to engage those with a front row seat to the cuisine and crafted cocktail action.

With the newest iteration of Le Comptoir (opened in 2018), Bar Crenn maintains its reputation as one of San Francisco’s swankiest spots in which to both imbibe and dine, illustrated by its repeated annual Michelin star designation. The velvet banquettes, the lowslung tables, and the epic, vinyl record-lined wall continue to provide a sultry backdrop to the Le Comptoir dining experience at the marble bar. A recent touch-up from Hollywood set designer, Crenn’s buddy Ethan Tobman (the two bonded while working together on the set of Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu), adds a bit of additional pizzaz. The ambiance is relaxed yet elevated, with a bit of French ooh-la-la combined with Japanese-inspired hi-fi listening bar-vibes. (The record collection is not just for show; guests are welcome to make requests, and inspiration is often found in the bar’s coasters—tiny vinyl replicas of classic albums. Think The Dark Side of the Moon and Aladdin Sane.)

But it’s the Bar Crenn team, most of whom also share adjacent Atelier Crenn kitchen duties, who elevate the Le Comptoir

experience. The chef crew shifts roles with each course, displaying wit, humor, and the composure necessary to serve and artistically plate while answering a multitude of guest questions. The experience, featuring pescatarian, nut-free, and dairy-free menu items, offers an intimate look inside the chefs’ craft; dialogue includes stories of product procurement, inspiration, and the secret behind inventive culinary techniques. The menu, inspired by Chef Crenn’s travels and the season’s best produce and seafood, changes every two months or so, with a possible variation in particular items depending on seasonality. On this night, the menu entailed:

• A starter of beetroot and caviar served with a seeded cracker

• Lobster mushroom bao bun, preceded by an encased display of the mushroom in its organic state

• Cuttlefish and bouillabaisse

• A dramatic, shell-opening presentation of one perfect scallop, sprinkled with shaved, dry cured tuna heart which imparts a briny, umami flavor, reminiscent of bottarga

• An always-welcome bread course of sourdough epi with cannellini bean “butter”

• Incredibly succulent poached halibut with sauced ramp and a side of carrot, ceremoniously released from the clay envelope in which it was baked

• A demitasse cup of siphon-brewed dashi, lemon, and noir fish broth

• And for dessert, Atelier Crenn’s pastry chefs took the “stage” to present a GPS Popsicle™ of guava, passionfruit and sea buckthorn. A mignardise selection followed.

Bar Crenn being first and foremost a cocktail lounge, aperitif and beverage pairings are a must. With the tools—and the agility—of chemists, the bar team fashions a remarkable collection of thoroughly original tipples, each a reimagination of the classics. The Timur, for instance, Bar Crenn’s citrusy perspective on the timeless Negroni, is made with Timur peppercorn, pink grapefruit, vermouth, Campari™, and Beefeater gin. (My bar seat neighbor proclaimed it the best cocktail she’s ever tasted.) The Santos features salted pomelo juice, lemon, and Campari, and is the bar’s take on the classic Garibaldi. The mixologists work their magic on other classics, such as the Paper Plane, the Hanky Panky, and the popular espresso martini. Coursed pairings might pull from these selections, with the inclusion of a few wines and perhaps even a mocktail, of which incredible flavor makes the absence of alcohol negligible.

Theater production or Le Comptoir? A show, even a Tony® winner, can’t satisfy, satiate, and entertain like a Le Comptoir meal.

The price is $198 per person, exclusive of beverages. Beverage pairing is $130; non-alcohol beverage pairing is $75.

Guide to good wine

ANNA FENDI, NOW IN HER NINTH DECADE, IS A FORCE to be reckoned with. Her boundless creativity, far from diminishing, seems to have reached new heights. As one of the iconic five Fendi sisters, she is the daughter of Adele Casagrande and Edoardo Fendi, the founders of FENDI, a name synonymous with luxury in the global fashion industry.

Anna Fendi, the head of development at FENDI for 30 years, saw the family business transition when Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey (LVMH Group) acquired it in 2000. Her daughter, Maria Silvia Venturini Fendi, the creator of the iconic Baguette handbag, stepped up to continue the family’s dedication to the brand, collaborating with the then-Artistic Director Karl Lagerfeld, and currently working with the Artistic Director of Womenswear, Kim Jones. Delfina Delettrez Fendi, Silvia’s daughter and Anna’s granddaughter, now heads the company’s jewelry division, ensuring the family’s legacy lives on.

As part of one of Italy’s most prominent families, Anna Fendi grew up celebrating her country’s rich cultural heritage and reputation for exquisite products. After leading the family business creatively for many years, she ventured into a new field of Italian expertise by curating a collection of wines and accessories designed to complement the Italian lifestyle.

She collaborated with her husband, wine enthusiast Giuseppe Tedesco, and a team of wine experts, selecting over 20 top Italian wine producers to be a part of her collection. She focused mainly on small producers who embraced a traditional approach to winemaking, basing her choices on each producer’s reputation and each wine’s distinct characteristics. The cherry-picked wines are presented in bottles labeled with Anna Fendi Vini (AFV). It’s important to note that Anna doesn’t produce the wines herself; instead, she curates a collection of her favorites.

To complement the wine collection, Anna collaborated with Venice’s Murano Island glass artists to create wine glasses and cases in Plexiglas® and leather for her design collection, “AFV—Anna Fendi—The art of tableware.”

Anna’s fashion influences are always apparent—the wine collection pays homage to her family’s craft. The fanciful names of the wines are a nod to the intricate patterns and textures often seen in the fashion world, effectively connecting the two industries. Even the labels have a crocodile print texture. Some of AFV wines include Brocatto (brocade) for a Montepulciano d’Abbruzzo DOCG, Spina di Pesce (herringbone) for a Soave DOC, Gabardine for Castel del Monte Aglianico, Bolero for a Barolo DOC, and Voile for Gavi di Tassarolo DOC Bio.

AFV is not Anna’s only post-FENDI venture. After stepping down from her position, she oversaw the restoration of Villa Laetitia, a former historical residence along the Tiber River in Rome. She transformed it into a luxurious hotel concept and added a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, Enoteca La Torre. In 2013, Forbes named Villa Laetitia one of Rome’s three most romantic residences. Condé Nast Traveler described it as “a charming hotel oozing old world Italian glamor, appealing to the fashion-forward of the world.”

The AFV collection is offered at Villa Laetitia, Enoteca La Torre, and other select locations. Notably, it can be found at a former Fendi family home, today a B&B also called Villa Laetitia, on Ponza Island in the Pontine Islands off the Roman coast, and at La Canonica Dei Fiori, a Fendi country home now operating as a boutique hotel in Ronciglione, Italy. The collection is also available at Archeo Wine Gallery in Rome’s Testaccio neighborhood. Situated near a former river port, the wine cellar is built around and focused on the thousands of layers of terracotta amphorae that Roman wine vendors smashed and disposed of by neatly arranging them at the site thousands of years ago. Located in the north end of Yountville, Ciccio is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike.

Discover the allure of RH Yountville where guests can savor dishes from the significantly reimagined menu, including mini lobster rolls with caviar, signature salads, and fried chicken sando. Pair your dish with a Napa Valley wine, specialty cocktail, or craft beer while dining amid fountains, olive trees, and elegant chandeliers.

Next door to RH Yountville, you’ll find The Restaurant at North Block which offers cuisine from coast to valley and delicious cocktails like their P.O.G. Sour with Meyer lemon vodka, guava, Lillet Blanc. (I ordered two.) Their menu showcases locally farmed, fished, and foraged ingredients and a variety of fresh pastas and wood-fired flatbreads.

THE NORTH BLOCK HOTEL

Described by guests as a little gem that packs a punch, North Block Hotel radiates Mediterranean vibes and features 20 rooms surrounding a tranquil courtyard complete with an outdoor fireplace and fountain. The exterior is also adorned with lush ivy and lined with warm lanterns. Each room offers a private entrance as well as a balcony or patio. Other amenities include comfy bedding and bathrooms with marble vanities, plush robes, double sinks, a soaking tub, and a rain shower.

The hotel provides a light complimentary breakfast (mimosas included), cruiser bikes, an intimate fitness studio and spa, plus a yearround heated pool and hot tub. I loved basking in the warm California sun at a poolside cabaña, surrounded by succulents for a natural touch. The charming Napa Valley Wine Train passes by, enhancing the relaxing Napa Valley ambiance.

Vintage House, located in the exquisite Estate Yountville, is a charming boutique hotel that captures the essence of California wine country. From its bungalow-style cottages set among mature olive trees and rose gardens to its chic lobby lounge, Vintage House exudes laid-back luxury.

Exquisite family retreat at ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki

FINDING A PLACE TO ENTERTAIN OUR TWO YOUNG ADULT sons on holiday may be a bit of a challenge. Both wanted to surf, and one did not want to go to our beloved Malibu for our annual surf holiday, since he attends university in Southern California. With one day to plan, I found the crown jewel in one of the best surfing spots (ahem, I’m an intermediate surfer at best), landing us in Oahu. I reached out to friends and asked for recommendations; Bergen Soudan of Magma Global Travel came up with the perfect spot. One flight five hours later, we were received at the airport and whisked to an oasis of tranquility. We arrived at ESPACIO The Jewel of Waikiki which was nothing short of extraordinary. This lavish hotel, which opened most recently, redefines luxury with its unique blend of privacy, comfort, and top-tier amenities. Traveling with my husband and our two young adult sons, we embarked on a memorable vacation that combined ultimate relaxation with the opportunity to go surfing with my sons.

“Espacio,” the direct translation of which means “room” in Spanish, doesn’t quite translate to what this luxury hotel is really all about. From the moment we arrived at ESPACIO, we were captivated by its elegant design and welcoming atmosphere. Each suite occupies an entire floor, providing an unparalleled level of privacy that made us feel like we were in our own oasis. Our multi-room suite featured Italian marble bathrooms, a dry sauna, and a private Jacuzzi® on the oceanfront lanai, offering the perfect amount of privacy and family space for the four of us. Facing one of the best beaches for our ideal surfing holiday, the suite offered luxury and space that was much needed for our family of four.

The hotel’s omotenashi-inspired service—rooted in the Japanese philosophy of hospitality—was evident in every interaction. The 24/7 butler and concierge services ensured our every need was met promptly and discreetly, from arranging our surf boards to lunch on the beach to securing reservations at the acclaimed Mugen restaurant.

The location of ESPACIO, directly across from Kuhio Beach on Kalākaua Avenue, was perfect for our surfing escapades. After spending the day surfing, You realize that ESPACIO is not just a hotel; it’s an experience. The rooftop infinity pool, where we spent relaxing afternoons soaking in the sun and enjoyed the daily champagne and caviar sunset hour, offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Spending time with my husband on holiday was easy. Spending time with two grown young men, who clearly were missing their schoolmates and girlfriends, added some challenge in entertaining. However, sitting rooftop and reminiscing about the day’s great waves really made for a memorable time together.

The Spa at ESPACIO provided rejuvenating treatments, allowing us to recharge after our active days.

No stay at ESPACIO would be complete without indulging in the culinary delights offered at Mugen, the hotel’s Forbes Five-Star award-winning restaurant. Under the direction of executive chef Colin Sato, Mugen provides an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates contemporary cuisine with hyper-seasonal ingredients sourced locally and globally. More importantly, we were truly impressed by their sommelier, Douglas Priesel, who

complemented our dining experience perfectly with the right combination of wines from around the globe. It truly was a feast for the senses with beautifully presented dishes that evoked the spirit of Hawaii.

ESPACIO’s prime location on Kalākaua Avenue placed us at the heart of Waikiki, where we could easily access myriad activities and shopping and dining experiences. The convenience of being steps away from the beach and local attractions allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in Waikiki.

Knowing she was a fan of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album, Duerr commissioned a custom Kemo Sabe cowboy hat with an orange band as a gift. “Texas Hold ‘Em” blared as the daughter arrived at the venue where she received the hat. In a touching twist, the butterfly hat token Duerr arranged to be donated held profound significance, as the daughter had a memorable experience during chemotherapy when an orange monarch butterfly landed on her scarf-covered head.

IN THE LAVISHLY ADORNED PARLOR ROOMS AT SHANGRI-LA Paris, ensconced in a palatial residence built by Prince Roland Bonaparte—grand-nephew to Napoleon Bonaparte—we settle into a velvet sofa for one of the hotel’s much anticipated nightly rituals: Champagne sabering. The room’s omnipresent chatter ends abruptly when a nattily dressed sommelier enters, bows, and draws a saber from its scabbard. In her other hand, she wields a chilled bottle of Veuve Clicquot which she points aloft. With no further ado, she smiles confidently, then whisks the sword along the bottle’s seam. Pop! Off flies the cork, faster than we can blink.

As she pours wine into proffered etched-crystal flutes, the sommelier explains that sabering, now a theatrical way to serve up a bottle of Champagne, was, according to legend, invented by Napoleon Bonaparte and his light cavalrymen, the Hussars. Purportedly, the general and his men (lovers of French Champagne) were gifted celebratory bottles of Champagne as they rode victoriously through French villages. Never

stopping to dismount, they discovered it was easier to open the bottles with their swords while astride their steeds than to stop to uncoil the foil and pull the cork. Today, the tradition lives on.

Of Champagne, Napoleon said: “In victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it!” Though not defeated after a hard day in Paris’ galleries, we’re pleased to have a tipple. THE WONDERFUL JOURNEY TO THE LOUIS VUITTON 37TH America’s Cup in Barcelona between August and October 2024 began with a series of preliminary regattas that proved to be the perfect warm-up ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series) with some thrilling, nerve-wracking racing at two of the most outstanding sailing venues in the world. The first event was held in Vilanova i la Geltrú between 14-17 September 2023 and, despite some challenging weather conditions, gave an early indication of form as the teams raced in one-design, fully equalized AC40s. By the time of the second preliminary regatta in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 29 November to 2 December 2023, a much clearer picture had emerged, although there were some very notable performances through the competitive fleet. The third and final preliminary regatta ran from August 22-25, 2024 in Barcelona, but the big difference was that all teams were racing their new AC75 yachts, built specifically for the Spanish Mediterranean sea and weather conditions.

The holder of the America’s Cup is the Emirates Team New Zealand representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, but strong competition is coming from INEOS Britannia from the United Kingdom as the “Challenger of Record.” The unique format of the Cup affords the defender, as the holder of the America’s Cup, the automatic right to bypass selection and proceed directly to the final “match,” whereas the challengers will undertake an intense, multi-race series of round robins to find the top yacht to take on the New Zealand team. Confirmed entries are INEOS Britannia (GBR), Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI), Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli (ITA), NYYC American Magic (USA), and Orient Express Racing Team (FRA).

and highly refined, the result of tens of thousands of hours of computer and on-water testing. The sailors are the very best on the planet, drawn from the worlds of the Olympic Games and high-performance foiling. Some are at their peak, others are still endeavoring toward their peak, while for some, this is their first America’s Cup. What unites all the teams is their “commitment to the commitment,” to quote the famous America’s Cup winner (and loser) Dennis Conner. Project Zin 2024 raises over $400,000 for Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area

PROJECT ZIN, AN ANNUAL FOOD AND WINE EVENT, RAISED OVER $400,000 to benefit the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area (DSCBA) at its 14th annual celebration on August 17. Held at Bricoleur Vineyards in Windsor, California, the event united wine enthusiasts, renowned chefs, and a community dedicated to making a difference in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Project Zin’s origin in 2010 was sparked by a family’s personal journey. When Clay and Carrie Mauritson’s son, Brady, was diagnosed with Down syndrome at two and a half years old, they teamed up with renowned chef Charlie Palmer, owner of Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg, to create a charitable event to champion inclusivity for individuals within the extended Down syndrome family. Over a decade later, Project Zin has evolved into a pivotal Sonoma County tradition.

The sold-out crowd enjoyed world class Zinfandels from 21 top producers, cuisine from acclaimed chefs, and a lively auction, culminating in a feeling of shared purpose and celebration. This year’s success brings the total funds raised since the event’s inception to over $2.5 million. One hundred percent of funds raised will support DSCBA’s mission of providing support, education, and resources.

The live auction, hosted by the Golden State Warriors’ “hype man” Franco Finn, raised over $250,000. Auction lots included exclusive travel experiences, such as an escape to Les Bourdeillettes in the Dordogne region of France, a private jet trip to Aspen for a ski getaway in the Rocky Mountains, and a wine, culinary, and ski weekend in Park City centered on the 2025 Red, White & Snow experience. Several lots featured wine collections, including the ultimate Lodi getaway, plus Project Zin’s 21 winery bottle collection which featured rare and large format bottles from Project Zin’s participating wineries. In a special moment after a lot featuring a signed rare bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23 Year Whiskey which sold for $18,000, Julian Van Winkle himself came to the stage with an additional bottle, allowing 16 attendees to bid $2,000 each for the opportunity to enjoy a shot of the rare whiskey.

Project Zin will return for its 15th year in 2025.

V Foundation Wine Celebration raises $10.5 million for Cancer Research

THE V FOUNDATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH CONTINUES to boost the fight against cancer, raising $10.5 million during its annual V Foundation Wine Celebration. Held in beautiful wine country, August 1-4, the 26th annual event welcomed over 500 guests and was hosted by Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, the legendary former head coach of the Duke University men’s basketball team and V Foundation Board Member. V Foundation founder Jim Valvano’s iconic “Don’t give up … Don’t ever give up!” philosophy was highlighted throughout the long weekend.

The V Foundation Wine Celebration kicked off on Thursday with the popular Dinner with the Docs, a unique opportunity to dine and meet with both V Foundation grantees and the world class oncology experts who lead the V Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee.

Friday began with the President’s and Vintner Grant Honoree Luncheon at Stanly Ranch, celebrating 2024 Vintner Grant honoree Ellie Anest, founder and CEO of Eleven Eleven Winery. The luncheon also included a surprise announcement: a grant named in honor of Wine Celebration board member and Tony award-winning Broadway performer Christian Hoff to recognize his contributions to the cancer research community. The grant was awarded to Jonathan Peled, M.D., Ph.D., at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The day culminated with Rock the V, the biggest party of the Wine Celebration weekend, held at the luxurious Estate Yountville. The event featured famed restaurateurs, award-winning chefs,

Saturday started off with the Krzyzewski Family Answer for Cancer Symposium where guests learned firsthand from V grantees about advances in cancer research. The Gala Dinner & Auction, held at Nickel & Nickel Winery, capped off the event weekend, hosted by Mike Krzyzewski along with Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation; Amy Marks Dornbusch, chairwoman, Wine Celebration; and Chris Spatola, ESPN college basketball analyst.

They were joined by gala chef Dustin Valette, owner of The Matheson, Valette Restaurant, and Valette Wines, for an incredible gala dinner paired with Nickel & Nickel wines. A rousing standing ovation ensued as the Spirit of Jimmy V Award was presented to George Bodenheimer, former ESPN president, to honor his decades of service and passion for the V Foundation’s mission.

“I am at a loss for words,” Bodenheimer said from the stage. “I’m so honored and humbled to receive this award. I love the V Foundation, and to receive this award, it’s truly special. When Jimmy announced the V Foundation at the inaugural ESPYs he said, ‘We are going to need your financial support to fund this world class research, because the life you save may be somebody that you love.’ Let’s please remember that powerful thought and get after it.”

The live auction included dozens of incredible lots up for bid. The evening’s top lots included a VIP experience for eight at the U.S. Open Semifinals and Finals in New York, hosted by renowned vintner Beth Nickel with a winning bid of $1.6 million; a country music festival and barbeque with Blakesley and Cyril Chappellet at $300,000; and a VIP Super Bowl LIX experience for four in New Orleans with the Staglin family, coming in at $200,000. A winner was also selected for the Legend Motor Co. Sweepstakes, who took home a custom-built Signature Series 4x4 vehicle.

The generosity continued through the Fund-a-Need paddle raise for colorectal cancer research, and when the final gavel came down at the end of the auction, $10.5 million had been raised to support lifesaving cancer research.

Since 1999, the Wine Celebration has raised over $168 million to support the V Foundation and its game-changing research, led by all-star scientists who are working to accelerate Victory Over Cancer® and save lives.

The 27th Annual V Foundation Wine Celebration will be held July 31-August 3, 2025.

A Summer Night With ArtSmart

ON AUGUST 21, ARTSMART CO-FOUNDER AND WORLD-RENOWNED tenor Michael Fabiano and friends performed a concert at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. A dinner, hosted by Kelly Clarke and Lilian Tsai, followed at Uccello Lounge. About 100 guests, including ArtSmart board members and enthusiastic supporters, attended the inspirational performance.

ArtSmart is one of the music charities I have supported since 2016, as I share the same belief that music has the power to change our lives and inspire us to achieve higher goals in life. I have hosted several fundraising concerts for ArtSmart with Michael Fabiano, including the first Olivia Decker Power of Music concert presented with Festival Napa Valley in September 2021 at a Belvedere private home during COVID-19.

ArtSmart was co-founded in 2016 by Michael Fabiano and John Viscardi after an extensive analysis of the United States education system and the economic landscape for artists living and working in the United States. It was born from a central idea: to offer students in under-resourced communities an opportunity to pursue their dreams and develop holistically, while supporting working artists in accomplishing their own professional goals. Through weekly, one-on-one, tuition-free music lessons over a full school year, ArtSmart students receive world class instruction and personalized mentorship from professional musicians. Using an evidence-based curriculum, ArtSmart’s teaching artists, known as mentors, work with their students to set goals, learn music, develop healthy self-esteem, and ultimately chart a course for the rest of their lives. “Having that one guiding light every single week, one mentor [whom] they can relate to and say, ‘this person cares about me,’ provides direct inspiration in all their other studies. Inspiration leads to personal growth, emotional growth, [and] academic growth. Inspiration is the key to success in school,” said Fabiano.

As of January 1, 2024, ArtSmart has provided over 38,000 music mentorship sessions to over 1,665 students in New York City, Newark, Jersey City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle. It has paid over $1.4 million in dependable income to teaching artists, who are now named the Maria Manetti Shrem Mentors after a $1 million grant donated by arts philanthropist Maria Manetti Shrem in January 2024. ArtSmart not only helps young people achieve their dreams, but also provides income to performing artists. The mentors contribute to their professions by teaching young students and performing the art they love to perform. It’s a great program for both music professionals and talented youngsters.

Run by Bill Hammond, founder and president of Hammond Entertainment in Southern California, Hammond Blessed 25th is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting underserved communities in Northern and Southern California. Napa Live Experience raises monies for On The Move, Boys and Girls Clubs of Napa Valley, EASE Sacramento, an initiative of ACED, and PAL Fairfield.

It included dinner, silent and live auctions, and remarks from title sponsors Lexus, Kaiser Permanente, Meritage Resort and Spa, and Hammond. The live auction included a variety of packages ranging from a Los Cabos getaway to an “Ultimate Napa Experience” package. The night ended on a high note with live musical performances from Aneesa Strings, Skyelor Anderson, three-time Grammy winner Narada Michael Walden, Mike Phillips, keyboard bassist Kevin Wong, and guitarist Jackson Allen.

The following morning under bright blue skies, golfers gathered at Silverado Resort’s North Course for the Celebrity Golf Classic. Guests enjoyed an al fresco breakfast on the lawn before Phillips, a renowned jazz saxophonist, dazzled the attendees with a memorable rendition of the national anthem to kick off the tournament. At each hole on the course, guests had the opportunity to engage with local vendors, their experiences ranging from noshing on fare from Flavor Train BBQ on Hole 1 to donating to the event’s cause at Hole 18 through the Long Drive Fundraiser with Sofia Arthur. The golf tournament closed with an awards reception where the first, second, and third place winners received awards and prizes.

Festival Napa Valley 2024 : A unique fusion of music, art, and culinary excellence

FESTIVAL NAPA VALLEY’S 18TH SEASON, HELD FROM JULY 6-21, 2024, once again enthralled audiences with a grand celebration of music, art, and culinary brilliance. This summer’s event, featuring diverse performances and initiatives, showcased the festival’s commitment to artistic excellence and its significant impact on community engagement. With a blend of international stars, emerging talent, and innovative programs, the festival’s dedication extends beyond the stage with impactful education programs for youth and seniors and tuition-free academies, fostering a thriving and engaged community.

The Frost School of Music at Festival Napa Valley’s Blackburn Music Academy provided an unparalleled educational experience for 60 pre-professional young instrumentalists from around the world. Under the leadership of flautist Jennifer Grim and a core faculty of musicians from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and leading orchestras and institutions, including Philadelphia Orchestra concertmaster David Kim, the academy gave participants the chance to study and participate in chamber and orchestral concerts, workshops, and a variety of professional development activities.

The Bouchaine Young Artist Series continued its tradition of discovering and promoting extraordinary talent with a sold-out series of three concerts, featuring New Zealand-born American violinist Geneva Lewis, Mexican American pianist Daniela Liebman, and Russian harpist Alisa Sadikova, with guest appearances by BYA alumna, pianist Audrey Vardanega, and Napa native, ballet dancer Emma Zoe Harris.

Recognizing the importance of bringing joy and engagement to all community members, Festival Napa Valley continued to expand its robust program to bring the arts to underserved communities. This included daily Meet the Musician concerts for the Boys & Girls Club of Napa Valley, reaching hundreds of children ages 6-18, many of whom never had the chance before to interact with professional musicians. And for the first time since the pandemic, the festival returned to the California Veterans Home, with singer/songwriter Matt Costa leading a moving concert and conversation with a large and enthusiastic group of residents, showing the festival’s commitment to spreading joy and inclusivity.

The Joel Revzen Conducting Prize, established in memory of the beloved conductor, continues to support emerging talent. This year’s recipient, rising star Italian conductor Filippo Ciabatti, led the Grand Cru Classics and Symphonic Finale concerts while mentoring the participants of the Blackburn Music Academy. His appearance was supported, in part, by the Italian Cultural Institute.

This year, the Khaledi Prize for excellence and innovation in classical music was awarded to the crossover supergroup, Time for Three. The two-violin, bass, and vocals trio dazzled audiences on several occasions during the festival, including the Donor Exclusive at Antinori and the Symphonic Finale, where they performed “Contact” by Kevin Puts (which earned them a Grammy award last year), as well as a rousing popup appearance at Freemark Abbey.

The Manetti Shrem Opera and Opera Program brought the magic of opera to the festival once again with a full-scale production of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, featuring soprano Brenda Rae, tenor Michele Angelini, bass David Soar, Volti Chorale, and fellows of the Manetti Shrem Opera Program, directed by Jean-Romain Vesperini. Festival Orchestra Napa was conducted by Carlo Montanaro.

The Novack Concerts for Kids series continued to delight young audiences with engaging family performances, presented this summer for hundreds of students from the Boys & Girls Club by the Flamenco Quadro with Pirouz de Caspio and Carola Zertuche and pianist Daniela Liebman in a bilingual English/Spanish program.

The Olivia Decker Power of Music series highlighted the transformative power of music this summer with Grand Cru Classics, an unforgettable orchestral concert on the Festival Napa Valley Stage at Charles Krug. The evening featured star violinist Ray Chen in Mendelssohn’s violin concerto and festival favorite pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” celebrating the iconic work’s 100th anniversary. The Mendelssohn concerto was accompanied by stunning, original visual artwork projected on the festival’s giant LED wall, part of the Suzanne Deal Booth Visual Arts Program.

Taste of Napa, Festival Napa Valley’s signature tasting event, celebrated the bounties of wine country and Napa Valley’s role as leader in the world of wine and hospitality with more than 70 wineries, breweries, restaurants, and culinary artisans, including the Wines of Great Britain, participating this year at the Meritage Resort and Spa. DJ Lady Ryan and the dance band Neon Velvet entertained the crowd of over 1,000, who could also play in Audi Ring Swing and life-sized games in Kaiser Permanente Thrive’s play court.

In addition to in-person events, Festival Napa Valley expanded its reach through a live stream of the Symphonic Finale concert in partnership with The Violin Channel, reaching thousands of music lovers worldwide.

Many audience members and participants alike commented that it was the festival’s best year ever, creating an unparalleled experience that has become unique in the world. The overwhelming success and positive feedback from the 2024 edition have set the stage for an even more exciting and memorable Festival Napa Valley in 2025. Festival Napa Valley Raises Record-Setting $4.5 Million at Arts for All Gala

Lionel Richie headlines the nation’s biggest arts charity event.

FESTIVAL NAPA VALLEY CEO/PRESIDENT RICK WALKER and his team delivered an amazing festival this year, delivering memorable moments to all attendees and raising a record-breaking $4.5 million at the Arts For All fundraising auction and gala. My favorite highlights included several events. First was the Grand Cru Classics (July 13) with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and world class violinist Ray Chen performing with Festival Orchestra Napa conducted by Filippo Ciabatti. The Maria Manetti Celebrates La Dolce Vita! event (July 16) honored Sophia Loren on the festival stage at Charles Krug. It continued with a patron dinner at Raymond Vineyards, the vineyard grounds transformed into an Italian street night market with pizza stand, food stalls, gelato cart, and strolling Napolitan style musicians. The exquisite Dance Gala (July 19) featured BodyTraffic accompanied by cellist Suuvi, percussionist Ricky Matute, and composer Pedro Osuna. That performance was followed by a patron dinner at Castello di Amorosa, where festival favorite Christina Maxwell performed Broadway showtunes, a show funded by the Suzanne Deal Booth Visual Arts Program, which brings visual arts to the live stage, creating the interdisciplinary and multisensory performances that made the evening so magical.

The crown jewel and most memorable event of Festival Napa Valley is the Arts for All Gala and Auction. The 2024 gala took place on July 14 and reached new fundraising heights, raising a record-setting $4.5 million to support access to arts education programs and to

provide free or affordable concerts to the community. Filled with fine food and wine, camaraderie, and timeless, musical enchantment, the gala contributes to a legacy for future generations, supporting access to world class performances, public school arts education programs, Festival Napa Valley’s music academies, and scholarships for students and talented emerging musicians. The gala has raised over $24 million to date and is one of the nation’s leading arts charity events.

Again, held at Nickel & Nickel Winery in Oakville this year, the gala was headlined by international superstar Lionel Richie. Renowned for his musical contributions both as a member of the Commodores and as a solo artist, Richie brought his soulful voice and charisma to the Festival Napa Valley stage, drawing more than 450 guests to their feet to dance and sing along to his timeless megahits, including “Hello,” “All Night Long,” “Easy Like Sunday Morning,” and “Say You, Say Me.”

Paired with single vineyard wines provided by Nickel & Nickel Winery, guests enjoyed an elegant dinner prepared by chef Elliot Bell, owner of Charlie’s, a family-run, community-focused, neighborhood restaurant in St. Helena. Bell served as the executive sous chef at Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry, where he spent the past decade of his career, and he also served as a volunteer firefighter for several years as a member of the St. Helena Fire Department.

experiences. It was a chance to make memories that lasted not only all night long, but for a lifetime. The evening’s top lot was a bespoke, allelectric Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Tignanello created for Marchesi Antinori exclusively for the gala and in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Tignanello wine. Other top lots included a Festival Napa Valley-hosted trip to Japan during cherry blossom season, which generated spirited bidding and more than 30 participants, including me; a four-night getaway to Bordeaux and Milan with iconic jewelry brand Pomellato; a luxurious grand tour of France as a guest of Opus One; a once-in-alifetime food and wine experience with renowned chef Massimo Bottura in his hometown of Modena, Italy; an invitation to the legendary Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda; and a private concert with rising star Matteo Bocelli and dinner featuring Tusk Estate wines at Solage Resort & Spa, for which I also bought a spot. Other unique buy-a-spot lots included a luncheon hosted by vintner Kathryn Walt Hall and daughter Jennifer Brown at Hall’s Rutherford home, a gourmet barbeque at Alpha Omega Winery hosted by Festival Board Chair Robin Baggett, and a private concert and dinner with international superstar Kate Hudson at Tusk Estates.

Other glamorous, bespoke experience lots included red carpet access and orchestra level seats to the 76th annual Emmy Awards, followed by attendance to the Television Academy Governors’ Gala

and premier seats to the 2025 Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony in Washington, D.C., with access to the exclusive opening act, pre-ceremony dinner, and the post-performance celebration. Lionel Richie also donated a pop-up lot, offering VIP tickets to his Las Vegas residency and an invitation to join him backstage. Conservationist and philanthropist Nan Parks broke the record for Fund a Need with her pledge of $400,000. Tim Busch and family, owner of Maritage Resort & Spa in Napa, donated a $250,000 pledge, joined by a $100,000 donation from arts philanthropist Maria Manetti Shrem. More than $1.2 million in Fund a Need pledges were raised, double last year’s record.

“We are grateful for our generous donors and sponsors who made this year’s Arts for All Gala such a monumental success,” said vintner Leslie Frank, gala chair and Festival board member. “Together, we are making a profound impact on the quality of life in Napa Valley and beyond.”

Reflecting on The Rolling Stones: The Hackney Diamonds Tour 2024

This may be the last time the legendary group performs in the U.S.

THE 2024 HACKNEY DIAMONDS TOUR RECENTLY CONCLUDED with electrifying performances in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, both brimming with enthusiastic fans from multiple generations. Each concert was a captivating spectacle, showcasing a powerful blend of newer tracks and classic hits that had audiences singing along with nostalgia and admiration for a band that has long defied the limits of time. The Rolling Stones, now well into their eighties, show no signs of slowing down; on stage they continue to deliver energy and passion that rival performers half their age. The band’s resilience and longevity in an industry known for its ephemeral nature are nothing short of remarkable. From their early days capturing the rebellious spirit of the 1960s with hits like “Satisfaction” and “Paint It Black” to their evolution into living legends, the Stones have consistently pushed boundaries. They have not only adapted to the changing music landscape but have also shaped it, paving the way for countless artists who came after them. As I reveled in the joy of their legendary music, a bittersweet undertone lingered, as many of us in attendance pondered the possibility that this might be their final U.S. tour. The atmosphere was electric, with fans celebrating a legacy that has profoundly shaped rock music for decades, leaving us to wonder how many more unforgettable moments this iconic band has in store for us.

NOBODY MOVES LIKE JAGGER

I was in attendance for the July 10 performance at SoFi to hear the Stones begin the concert with with the only song that makes sense, “Start Me Up.” Mick Jagger, despite his years, moved with the same

vibrant energy of his youth, effortlessly commanding the crowd with his magnetic presence and captivating stage antics. The crowd roared so loudly in Los Angeles you almost couldn’t hear the music. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood wielded their guitars with the familiar vigor that fans have come to expect. Meanwhile, Steve Jordan held down the fort on drums with the same intensity that defined Charlie Watts’ legacy, infusing the performances with a soul that kept the energy soaring throughout the night. The atmosphere was electric, with fans singing along, dancing, and sharing in the joy that only live music can bring, leaving everyone with memories to cherish long after the last note had faded.

Yet, beneath the euphoria of these performances lies an undeniable truth—The Rolling Stones are human, and like all of us, they are subject to the passage of time. While their music will remain timeless, the reality of their age brings a bittersweet tinge to their legacy. The likelihood that the Hackney Diamonds Tour was one of their last tours and even greater likelihood this is their last U.S tour left me in a melancholy state. That was crystalized as Keith, Ronnie, and Mick gathered after the last song on the long catwalk at SoFi Stadium. When they embraced and closed their eyes, I did the same to take in the moment. My moment brought me back to my early twenties in 2002 at Madison Square Garden. It was the first time I saw the Stones live, and the July 2024 concert could have been the last. But (I can get) satisfaction knowing all the moments they’ve given us, the emotions they’ve stirred, and the unforgettable legacy they’ve created for fans around the world.

IT IS NOT EVERY DAY YOU GET TO RUB ELBOWS WITH A NOBEL Peace Prize nominee, and not only rub elbows, but engage in fascinating conversation one-on-one in one of the grandest living rooms in all of wine country.

Beneath a moody magenta sky, VIP guests graced the magnificent Castellucci Oakville Estate in a global toast to peace, poignantly put by the founder and visionary behind Roots of Peace, a humanitarian nonprofit organization which de-mines war-devastated land and, in turn, regenerates the soil, planting vineyards and orchards worldwide. This grand celebration honored not only the stately Napa Valley vintners who dove in head-first to give Mrs. Heidi Thomas Kuhn her seed funding and encouraging beginning, but the remarkable pedigree of being named a 2024 Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Kuhn, in her 27th year of undying dedication, devotion, and monumental vision for a more peaceful world, has singlehandedly changed our Earth and those who grace it.

“Our Mother Earth is contaminated by warfare and land mines; there are an estimated 60 million landmines in 60 countries worldwide,” stated Kuhn in her opening speech. “Children should have the same freedoms worldwide: to be able to kick a soccer ball out of bounds without having to worry about losing a limb or a life.”

Her moving opening speech touched the hearts and souls of all 110 guests. Esteemed consuls general, representing 20 different countries from Japan to Georgia, local politicians, Napa Valley vintners, supporters, and their guests gathered in support of a hopeful, peaceful future for generations to come. Roots of Peace, based in Marin County, California has become the leading cornerstone of Peace through Agriculture, a business model for peace to be scaled around the world.

The Pax Agricultura event at Castellucci Napa Valley honored the 27th anniversary of Roots of Peace, uniting under the vision of transforming mines to vines, turning dangerous minefields into thriving vineyards. Kuhn’s groundbreaking work has profoundly impacted millions of farmers and families worldwide, converting wartorn fields into sustainable agricultural landscapes. The San Francisco Opera performed melodic Italian arias and, most touching, the Prayer for Ukraine, sung in Ukrainian. The voices of soprano Olivia Smith and tenor Christopher Oglesby, accompanied by pianist Yang Lin, sent an angelic, harmonious tone throughout the event: we are globally united through custom and culture and have a responsibility to better the lives of those living among war and destruction.

“We are all connected through song, through cultural avenues,” said Marcus Nobel, great grandson of Nobel Peace Prize creator Dr. Alfred Nobel. Presenting a particularly expressive and gripping keynote speech, Nobel gave insight into the Nobel Peace Prize, its origination, and Kuhn’s remarkable achievements. He spoke of the need for understanding cultures in a more profound way to dramatically aid in healing the world, a piece of Nobel’s speech that hit home for many in attendance. Among the impressive list of accolades, Kuhn was awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice this year and, most notably, was designated a 2023 World Food Prize Laureate, coined as the Nobel Peace Prize for agriculture.

Consul General Dymtro Kushneruk of Ukraine commented on the state of his country and the positive impact that Roots of Peace will have as they take the necessary steps to move into Ukraine to begin de-mining once it is deemed safe. Needless to say, the stunning Castellucci Estate overflowed with talented voices, activists and global leaders all banding together for the welfare of others. It was philanthropy at its finest!

Gracious hosts, Maria Castellucci Moore and her parents, Antonio and Rita Castellucci of Castellucci Napa Valley, have been dedicated supporters of Kuhn and her transformative work since its inception. As pillars in the community, the Castellucci family is proud to support Kuhn’s valiant efforts and heroic deeds, serving millions of people and economies around the world. “As an immigrant, being able to give back to a cause that has such incredible reach around the world has been very fruitful, no pun intended,” stated Antonio Castellucci. From the initial support of the Mondavi family, Tor Kenward of TOR Wines, and Diane Disney Miller of Silverado Vineyards, to name a few, the tremendous patronage and blessings from the Napa Valley vintners have rooted Kuhn in her life’s calling: “We are all connected and grounded in the Earth we share, in the soil we nurture, giving life and opportunity toward a peaceful and prosperous future.”

Highlights of the 2024 Monterey Car Week

OVER THE COURSE OF THE ANNUAL MONTEREY CAR WEEK IN AUGUST, automotive manufacturers, connoisseurs, collectors, marketers, and enthusiastic spectators come from all around the world to the Monterey Peninsula to celebrate the ultimate in automotive design, engineering, and innovations among fellow aficionados. The events unveiled to the public market pristine new car models and examples of the world’s finest and most unique vintage automobiles during a week dedicated to showcasing the very best of the best. Here is another year of exceptional offerings at various shows and events we attended at 2024 Monterey Car Week.

ON AUGUST 18 AT THE 73RD ANNUAL CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE, 214 cars from 16 countries and 29 states pulled onto the competition field at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Thousands of spectators and a dozen judges viewed the cars and participated in the award ceremony at the ramp built on the 18th green in front of The Lodge. This year, for the first time in its history, the judges awarded the Best of Show to a preservation car: a 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports presented by Fritz Burkard of The Pearl Collection in Zug, Switzerland. Concours Chairman Sandra Button noted at the award ceremony, “This storied Bugatti, the first Type 59 built, is a rare factory race car that recorded multiple Grand Prix victories at the hands of several important racing greats—and it also has ties to royalty. Perhaps most importantly, it wears all of its history to this day, having been preserved in the livery it was given when redressed by King Leopold of Belgium.”

Thrilled owner Fritz Burkard exclaimed, “I’m so happy for the car, so happy for Bugatti. This car is incredible. It has so much history—one of the most successful Bugattis in history—and to win with this car means a lot to me. For the first time, a Swiss wins, [the] first time a European wins, [the] first time a preservation car wins. It’s important that preservation also gets recognition because a car can only be once original. And it drives so beautifully.”

With this win, Bugatti and Mercedes-Benz are tied for the most Best of Show awards at Pebble Beach: 10 wins each. In the past, the Best of Show winners were vintage cars restored to 100 points perfection.

This year’s race for Best of Show featured other strong contenders, including the 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Saoutchik Fastback Coupé presented by Robert Kudela of Chropyně in the Czech Republic; the 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve LeBaron Sport Phaeton presented by Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati, Ohio; and, perhaps most surprisingly, the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero Bertone Coupe which was presented by Phillip Sarofim of Beverly Hills, California, in a history-making display of wedgeshaped concepts and prototypes.

The competition got underway on Thursday when the majority of Concours entries participated in the 26th Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance which traces about 70 miles of scenic coastal roads. Entries that complete the Tour have the advantage if they tie in the Concours class competition. Sir Michael Kadoorie, the owner of Peninsula Group and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, won the special Alec Ulmann Trophy with his 1934 Hispano-Suiza J12 Vanvooren Cabriolet. And Concours d’Elegance veteran classic collector Arturo Keller’s 1906 Mercedes 70 HP Rothschild and Fils Triple Phaeton won the Class Award for second place in the A-1 Antique category.

Sadly, Keller passed away earlier this year. He attended the Concours every year since 1979, when I first met him, showing over 108 cars and winning 80 awards, including three Best of Show trophies. No one else has earned more awards.

The Pebble Beach Concours has been a nonprofit charity event since its start. It has already raised more than $3 million for charity this year, bringing the event’s total charitable donations to over $41 million to date. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit nearly 100 local nonprofits focused on youth education, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.

Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for the 20th year, hosted its largest auction to date, grossing over $105 million in sales. The top lot of the Pebble Beach Auctions was the award-winning, highly desirable 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider which sold for $14,030,000.

The Quail is one of the most prestigious events at Monterey Car Week each year. The event celebrates the highest echelon of automotive excellence, featuring unveilings of new luxury cars, supercars, and hypercars, while showcasing the most significant classics influencing automotive history with their design, engineering, and innovation.

Winning Best of Show this year was a particularly incredible classic car, a 1937 Delahaye Type 135. The stunning car was inducted into the Rolex Circle of Champions on The Quail Golf Club’s greens. Originally made as an open-wheel race car, the Delahaye Type 135 has a 12-cylinder engine capable of 240 horsepower, incredible when it was made. It’s believed to have been driven by Renee Dreyfus in the Prix du Million, the 1938 Pau Grand Prix, and the Cork Grand Prix. Eventually, it received new bodywork as a roadgoing sports car, covering its original racing components.

Other award-winning cars at this year’s The Quail included a 1949 MG TC which won the Spirit of The Quail award and the 1963 Jaguar E-type FHC which won the Hagerty Drivers Foundation Award. Along with reveals and debuts of some of the world’s most anticipated and desirable new supercars and hypercars, incredible classics were spotlighted and celebrated at The Quail this year, and the award winners were truly special gems of the automotive industry.

Casa Ferrari: Ferrari’s glamorous outpost at Pebble Beach

BENVENUTI A CASA FERRARI. CELEBRATING A MOMENTOUS 70 years of Ferrari in America, the Italian carmaker transformed Pebble Beach Golf Links into a glamorous Maranello outpost for this year’s Concours d’Elegance. The savviest Ferrari collectors and superfans could appreciate the nods to Ferrari’s milestones in America, but any guest with an eye to detail was impressed by the level of hospitality and elegance the Ferrari team delivered.

Access to Casa Ferrari required a VIP Scuderia Ferrari-etched lanyard, but guests with general tickets to the Concours could explore the lawn decorated with 70 iconic Ferraris from the past seven decades. Each with its own elegant design and unique story to tell, it was impossible to choose a favorite car from the lineup.

Given their historical significance, two deserve a special mention. The 365 GTB4, with its powerful, front-mounted V12 engine, famously won first, second, and third places at the 24 hours of Daytona in 1967, garnering its unofficial nickname, the Daytona. Inspired by that legendary Daytona, Ferrari’s latest supercar, the 12Cilindri, features the iconic, front-mounted V12 engine, top performing power, and high-tech specs.

With power output reaching 830 horsepower, and maximum revs reaching 9,500 revolutions per minute, the 12Cilindri has no competition on the road. As always, Ferrari designed the supercar with sport, class, and elegance in mind, drawing from aeronautical design evident in the 8-speed DCT gearbox and independent four-wheel steering. If you are eager to add this model to your Ferrari collection, your next decision will be choosing between the 12Cilindri coupe and the 12Cilindri Spider which cleverly maintains the sleek, streamlined proportions with a reverseopening bonnet design. Although initially debuted at the Miami Grand Prix in May, the Concours allowed the rest of the world

to get an up-close look at Ferrari’s latest supercar next to the historic models that inspired it. Matteo Torre, CEO of Ferrari North America, emphasized that this was the first global launch for the Maranello-based carmaker in the United States. With such a momentous unveiling, the 12Cilindri quite aptly celebrates Ferrari’s 70 years in the United States.

For Ferrari VIPs, the fun did not stop on the Pebble Beach Golf Links lawn. Through a private gate next to the supercar display, Ferrari’s top clientele could enter Casa Ferrari, a Maranello outpost decked out with Italian hospitality and glamor. Chic white couches and tables adorned with Ferrari red flower arrangements decorated the lawn. Of course, there was plenty of room on the table to set down a slice of pizza, served pillowy and hot by the Una Pizza Napoletana team. Chef Anthony Mangieri garnered worldwide recognition for his pizzeria located in New York’s Lower East Side, winning the number 1 pizzeria in the world in 2022 and endless accolades from Esquire and the Michelin Guide to name just a few.

To cool off from the California sun, guests enjoyed a selection of beverages, including a tequila-based lemon spritz or a glass of Vermentino from the Antinori family’s estate in Bolgheri: Tenuta Guado al Tasso. For those who may be less familiar with Vermentino, it is a white grape varietal indigenous to the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy, which picks up minerality and aromatic qualities due to its proximity to the sea. I chose to sip my glass of Vermentino on the Casa Ferrari terrace, overlooking a cinematic viewing stage which live-streamed the competition field throughout the afternoon. The only regret from my afternoon at Casa Ferrari was not driving away from the Concours d’Elegance in a 12Cilindri Spider of my own.

Bentley’s Remarkable Presentations and Hospitality at Monterey Car Week

BENTLEY MOTORS PRESENTED A TRIO OF FIRSTS, SHOWCASING the breadth of the marque’s automotive diversity at Monterey Car Week. The new, fourth-generation Continental GT Speed made its U.S. debut with a personalized example from Bentley’s bespoke and coachbuilding division, Mulliner, spearheading a fleet of more than 30 pre-production examples at the event. Journalists and customers were able to sample the new GT Speed on the road for the first time anywhere.

Also making its debut at Monterey Car Week was Bentley’s own 1961 S2 Drophead Coupe. Purchased from a French owner in 2022 as part of the work to rebuild the in-house Heritage Collection—one of just 15 examples created by Mulliner in the 1960s—the car was in very poor condition and took two years of extensive restoration to become the first Bentley ever entered into the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance by the marque itself. The S2 Drophead Coupe is a forebear of the new Continental GT Speed Convertible in two distinct ways. The new Continental GT Speed family utilizes Bentley’s new Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain—created around an all-new V8 engine paired to an electric motor—becoming the next member of a Bentley V8 bloodline which started with the S2 and which introduced a 6.23-litre V8 to replace the straight-six engine of the S1.

The latest project from the Mulliner’s Classic division, the Speed Six Continuation Series, was also used on the road for the first time. An exact continuation of the Speed Six which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1930, Speed Six “Car Zero” is a newly built example crafted by hand to the original drawings and using original materials and original manufacturing techniques. The car was driven for several thousand miles during engineering, development, and sign-off, ahead of the trip to Monterey, to offer an authentic Speed Six experience to Mulliner customers who have ordered one of the 12 examples to be created.

I had a nice chat with Christophe Georges, Bentley Motors’ global sales and marketing director, about the impressive presence of Bentley at Monterey Car Week, which continues to be one of the most comprehensive of any brand. Nearly 90 Bentleys were brought together on the Monterey Peninsula for the week, and Bentley hosted more than 3,000 customers and friends throughout different events.

The Quail formalized the arrival of the new Continental GT Speed in the USA, alongside a new Bentayga S Black Edition finished in satin silver with orange accents. Friday evening was Bentley’s return to Seal Rock for its iconic Beach Dinner in conjunction with brand partner The Macallan, where it was announced that the Bentley Environmental Foundation will fund a U.S. kelp forest initiative with its partner, SeaTrees, restoring vital carbon dioxide-absorbing kelp forests along key coastal sites. There was also the Bentley hospitality villa near the Pebble Beach Lodge and Bentley’s famous Signature Party on Saturday night at Pebble Resorts’ The Beach & Tennis Club where hundreds of Bentley clients and guests danced the night away.

On Sunday, Bentley again hosted guests at the beach for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where a small group of Bentley executives served as honorary judges and the 1961 S2 Drophead was showcased, while a new Continental GTC Speed appeared on the Concept Lawn. Meanwhile, a pair of Mulliner designers hosted specification sessions with clients across the events, with scores of new Bentleys imagined.

As a proud owner of a Bentley Flying Spur, I am absolutely impressed by Bentley’s presentations and remarkable hospitality. My only regret is that I didn’t drive away with a new Continental GT Speed, which is the only super deluxe four-seater convertible sports car I would like to own.

Hispano-Suiza Celebrates 120th Anniversary with Debut of Carmen Sagrera

CELEBRATING 120 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN AND performance, Hispano-Suiza debuted its Carmen Sagrera to the American public at The Quail during Monterey Car Week. The Carmen Sagrera boasts a new design, 1,114 horsepower, and a 103-kilowatt-hour battery. The 2024 Carmen Sagrera completes the range of its electric “hypercars” redefining the “gentleman driver” concept and marks the future design line of the brand with a total of 24 exclusive and limited Carmen Sagrera units available. The design draws inspiration from the iconic 1938 Hispano-Suiza Xenia Dubonnet, also on display, which inspired the current range of Hispano Suiza hypercars. The Xenia was one of the most extravagant and aerodynamic cars of its time.

Mateu family and today continues under the great-grandson of the founder Miguel Suqué Mateu. Hispano-Suiza CEO Sergio Martinez said, “Presenting the Carmen Sagrera in the United States on our 120th anniversary is a significant milestone for us.”

Illustrating the company’s legacy, two Hispano-Suiza cars took top prizes at the 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The 1934 Hispano-Suiza 112 Vanvooren Cabriolet owned by the Honorable Sir Michael Kadoorie of Hong Kong took the Alec Ulmann Trophy Special Award as well as second place in the J-1 European Classic Touring Early category; the 1923 Hispano-Suiza H6B Fernandez et Darrin Cabriolet, owned by Sam and Emily Mann of Englewood, New Jersey, took first place in the touring category.

To step into the world of Hispano-Suiza is truly to enjoy the “pleasure of belonging to the unique.”

LAMBORGHINI WOWED THE CROWDS WITH ITS EXCLUSIVE

Lamborghini Lounge Monterey, a luxurious villa where the brand showcased its latest creations. The star of the event was the newly revealed Lamborghini Temerario, a supercar that sets a new standard in hybrid performance.

Presented in two vibrant configurations, Blu Marinus and Verde Mercurius, the Temerario is now available with the lightweight Alleggerita package, perfect for track stars. VIP guests had the opportunity to explore the Temerario’s state-of-the-art features through a mixed reality experience, combining virtual elements with the physical car.

In addition to the Temerario, Lamborghini displayed its fully hybridized lineup, including the Urus SE, the first PHEV version

of their luxury Super SUV, and the Revuelto, a hybrid supercar with 1,001 horsepower. Guests also experienced Lamborghini’s new collaboration with luxury audio brand Sonus Faber, which showed off an exclusive demo of the Revuelto’s bespoke in-car sound system. Lamborghini Squadra Corse further impressed with its showcase of three motor sports models, including the SC63— Lamborghini’s first hybrid race car prototype—the Huracán GT3 EVO2, and the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2.

The highlight of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance saw Lamborghini’s Temerario standing out with its ingenious design on the prestigious Concept Lawn in front of the Pebble Beach Lodge. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann served as an honorary judges at the Concours.

Karma Automotive Unveils Innovation and Excellence

HEADQUARTERED IN IRVINE, CALIFORNIA AND THE STATE’S first and only ultra luxury automaker, Karma Automotive manufactures electric and E-REV (extended-range electric vehicles). They announced a bilateral collaboration with Intel Automotive to co-develop software-defined vehicle architecture (SDVA) which will underpin its upcoming vehicles, including the Karma Kaveya super coupe. Through the shared expertise from their respective industries, the companies will demonstrate and validate critical concepts for the advancement of open standards for SDVA which may be shared openly and commercially to support the transformation of the broader automotive industry. The Karma Kaveya super coupe, with up to 1,000 horsepower, optional all-wheel drive, and a sub-three-second 0-60 miles per hour, will be priced from approximately $300,000 when it arrives in 2026. It is anticipated to be the world’s first vehicle developed from the ground up with true SDVA. All future Karma automobiles to follow the Kaveya, including the potential production version of Karma Automotive’s “GT-UV” design study which made its global premiere at The Quail on August 16, will follow this same path, utilizing SDVA co-developed with Intel Automotive.

On August 15, I attended Karma’s exclusive dinner on the Vineyard Lawn at Carmel Valley Ranch, hosted by Karma Automotive President Marques McCammon who unveiled the new Karma Kaveya. “Karma Automotive, together with Intel Automotive, will realize SDVA’s full potential to create innovative, intelligent, and beautiful Karma automobiles which, in addition to delivering unparalleled driving dynamics, will be highly efficient and offer an exceptional ownership experience,” said McCammon. “For Tier 1s and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) not quite ready to take the leap from the old way of doing things to the new, Karma Automotive will play as an ally, helping them make that transition with business-to-business SDVA solutions in the same way we do today with Karma Connect, our proprietary vehicle data management and over-the-air services platform, which presently provides services to the world’s second largest OEM.”

“At Intel Automotive, we can see that the industry is facing a perfect storm of unprecedented change. Intel has assisted other

industries with such transformations in the past, and we’re honored to do the same in automotive,” said Jack Weast, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive. “Together, through this collaboration with Karma Automotive, we’re in a position to prepare the industry for the leap forward to SDVA without leaving anyone behind.” McCammon and Weast first aligned on the vision for the future of the automobile during their work as colleagues over a decade ago at Wind River, formerly a division of Intel.

Since the invention of the automobile in 1888, its architecture has remained relatively unchanged: power trains have become more powerful and efficient, and vehicle safety has greatly improved, but the format has stayed largely the same. With the addition of each new feature from fuel injection and power windows to air-conditioning and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), today’s vehicle typically has over 100 electric control units (ECUs), each delivering a single function and requiring over a mile of copper cabling to connect. Layer upon layer has been piled atop a foundation which can no longer support the future of the automobile. The solution may be found in the information technology industry which long ago moved away from single function devices to high-performance computing systems where multiple workloads run on a single, centralized system. Similarly, SDVA looks at the vehicle systems as a whole and allows for the seamless movement of workloads between software-defined central “compute” systems and software-defined zonal “compute” sub-systems, ensuring maximum flexibility, optimal cost, and performance with significant energy efficiency benefits.

The Karma portfolio embodies California’s spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial boldness, reflected by the signature Comet Line which is the central hallmark of Karma’s new design language. The third generation Karma Revero sport sedan, the world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid, will be introduced in late 2024 and offer luxury balanced with conscientiousness, delivered without compromise. The Gyesera four-seater is anticipated in 2025, and in 2026, the Karma Kaveya super coupe, with up to 1,000 horsepower and butterfly doors, will arrive.

NESTLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAWN AT THE QUAIL Lodge & Golf Club with The Peninsula Hotel’s Californian themed hospitality tent at one end and South Korean at the other was an unmissable car that looked like it had come straight from a comic book.

This is exactly the point of the new and unique “one-ofone” B95 Gotham which was inspired by Bruce Wayne, the alter ego of DC Comics superhero Batman. The creation is the first car from a groundbreaking collaboration with Warner Bros., which made a world debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 16.

The car’s physical world premiere followed its virtual debut on April 30, when Italian ultra-luxury car maker Automobili Pininfarina launched its four bespoke, one-off vehicles during the partnership announcement. The four were the B95 Gotham shown at The Quail, the Battista Gotham, the B95 Dark Knight, and the Battista Dark Knight. If, like me,

you do not speak Italian, “Battista” is an Italian name that may be used as a given name or surname meaning “baptist” or “baptized” and often used to honor Saint John the Baptist who is said to have baptized Jesus Christ in the River Jordan.

Given this, it took me a little by surprise when Richard Yarrow, PR director for Automobili Pininfarina, spoke with a familiar British accent, making me feel much more at home on the Monterey Peninsula. Richard kindly spent a generous amount of time taking me around all the little details of the car, explaining how the idea behind the partnership was to demonstrate the company’s ability to coach-build automobiles in whatever bespoke manner a customer would request—the fictional customer in this case being Bruce Wayne. Yarrow proudly echoed the brand’s promise of “Dream Cars, Made Real.” As Dave Amantea, Chief Design Officer at Automobili Pininfarina, said, “The B95 Gotham exemplifies how we bring our brand promise to life for our clients.”

Range Rover House, The House of Maserati AND the Luxury Collection

SHELTERED WITHIN THE MONTEREY CYPRESS TREES OF POPPY Hills Golf Course, Poppy Lane was clearly the place to be during Monterey Car Week 2024 as the location of Range Rover House and The House of Maserati, both of which I had the pleasure of stepping into.

For the second year running, I have been lucky enough to make Range Rover House a second home during the week, last year helping to host the launch dinner for the 2023 Range Rover SV Carmel Edition and this year hosting an illustrious whisky tasting masterclass, the Four Corners of Scotland, with my team from J.P. Morgan Private Bank and partners at Chase Auto.

As always, the style and ambience of Range Rover House was the perfect setting for the Range Rover brand to debut the 2024 Range Rover SV Carmel Edition and the high-performance Range Rover Sport SV EDITION TWO. The guided exploration of the flavors and aromas of Scotland’s spirit and learning about the history of Scotch whisky from the Diageo Rare & Exceptional Private Client Team were purely added benefits.

The Carmel Edition is a highly exclusive offer, with only 17 units priced at $370,000. It was first offered to Range Rover House guests wanting the opportunity purchase the long wheel base Range Rover meticulously finished by the SV Bespoke team. The high-performance Range Rover Sport SV EDITION TWO has a specially tuned 626hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine, making this Range Rover’s most powerful and fastest ever vehicle. I spent a good amount of time admiring the Blue Nebula SV Ultra Metallic matte finish exterior across the weekend, experiencing it in both the famous golden light of a Californian sunset and the rolling Monterey fog that reminded me and my new right-hand drive comrade of our motherland. Needless to say, the car looked beautiful throughout, and it took restraint of the highest order not to put an order in for now.

It’s no secret that I have been a fan of Land Rovers since I learned to drive in a Land Rover Series III Lightweight at the age of eight in the fields of our farm in England. Therefore, the Land Rover Classic showcase of a curation of the vehicles belonging to Queen Elizabeth II at both Range Rover House and the show field of the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was something very special to me. Apparently, I was not alone in this view as the showcase and Land Rover Classic garden party on Sunday attracted some of the largest Land Rover collectors from around

the globe. Queen Elizabeth’s association with Land Rover began shortly after the first Land Rover was produced in 1948, with the royal family being one of the earliest adopters of the vehicle due to its robust utility being particularly suited to the British countryside and royal estates. The Queen was often seen driving Land Rovers herself on official and private occasions; some of the cars made it over to Carmel. Even in her later years, she continued to be seen behind the wheel of a Land Rover, demonstrating her enduring connection to the vehicle and brand. Rest in peace, ma’am.

Just down the road, Italian luxury and performance brand Maserati, the literal poster child of the 2024 Concours, celebrated 110 years of innovation, showcasing its storied past, present, and future across an array of activations during Monterey Car Week 2024. The House of Maserati served as the home base for Maserati’s activities throughout the week, bringing a taste of la dolce vita hospitality to all who were lucky enough to visit.

Matt Rindon, head of PR & communications for Maserati North America, kindly invited me to introduce the officially launching Classiche department with an MC12 Special Edition to serve as a nod to the trident’s rich racing heritage. Across the property was a diverse array of models including the all-electric Folgore line: GranTurismo Folgore, GranCabrio Folgore, and Grecale Folgore as well as the GranCabrio Trofeo and MC20 Cielo.

Kept completely under wraps until The Quail, Maserati unveiled its latest creation: a one-of-a-kind super sports car that represents a seamless fusion of the Maserati GT2’s racing heritage and the elegance of the Maserati MC20 halo car. With a top speed surpassing 320 kilometers per hour, an increased 640hp, a reduction in weight by 60 kilograms, and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in a mere 2.8 seconds, the debut is not something to be messed with and yet another reflection of the brand’s pursuit of excellence in automotive engineering.

My friends at the Luxury Collection, owned by Price Family Dealerships, the largest exotic and luxury vehicle dealership group in Northern California, hosted their annual Monterey Car Week in Carmel Valley at Gardener Ranch, a beautiful outdoor venue with endless amenities situated in the Carmel Valley. Over the week,

their clients from their three campuses in Los Gatos, Walnut Creek, and Palo Alto partnered with me to invite guests of J.P. Morgan Private Bank. The dealership brands include Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Czinger, and Automobili Pininfarina, and they work with some of the highest level of car collectors.

Thursday’s customer appreciation party was a highlight of the week, providing guests with not only the opportunity to talk cars, but also live entertainment, dinner, caviar, Cazcanes tequila, AXR Napa Valley wine, and LOUIS XIII cognac. I do not think that I am alone in my opinion that this was a luxurious end to a day that included Rolls-Royce drives in the Spectre, Cullinan, and Ghost in attendance with Chris Brownridge, the chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

My focal point of the week—and certainly that of the guests whom I invited to join me and Chase Auto at Gardener Ranch— was the Saturday spent driving with Aston Martin Los Gatos and Walnut Creek. As a Brit, I have had no choice but to be in awe of Aston Martin, along with the rest of the world, since the DB5 first appeared in the 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger Aston Martin also feels somewhat related to the Jaguar Land Rover family as Ian Callum—who was the chief designer at Aston Martin between 1993 and 2001 and therefore responsible for some of the brand’s most iconic models including the DB7, Vanquish, and DB9—was also the director of design at Jaguar until 2019. I knew it could not just be a coincidence that the Jaguar F-Type looks a little more than a distant cousin of the Aston Martin lineup.

It was very difficult for not only me but everyone involved to contain their excitement when the team at the Luxury Collection gave us the keys to the 2025 Aston Martin Vantage, two DB12s, and two DBX707s. This was a recipe for arguably one of the more exciting and colorful convoys blasting through the Carmel Valley hills with the thundering sound of turbocharged V8s sourced by Mercedes-AMG and tuned to perfection by Aston Martin.

FOUNDED IN 1857, BUENA VISTA WINERY IN SONOMA IS RICH in history. It’s also known as the first premium and one of the most colorful of all the wineries in California. Its founder, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” Agoston Haraszthy, was a vivacious and eccentric pioneer with a veritable love and true commitment to California wine.

In addition to delicious tasting experiences and tours, Buena Vista winery hosts many exclusive events in wine country, including a gala held on August 4. The gala supports The Way of the Rain, a nonprofit founded by Sibylle Szaggars Redford. In attendance was Academy Award-winning actor, producer, and director Robert Redford, vice president of The Way of the Rain.

The nonprofit is dedicated to the mission of developing, producing, and performing educational and artistic performances to promote public awareness and support for the protection of the Earth. The memorable gala was part of Festival Del Sole, which features wine and culinary events as well as performing arts.

The gala dinner poured Buena Vista wines as well as a Bordeaux wine crafted by enologist Michel Rolland especially for The Way of the Rain.

Pre-gala, the documentary, The Way of the Rain: Hope for Earth, was screened. Narrated by Robert Redford, this moving piece combines music, dance, and art to tell the story of life on Earth. The Redfords were honored to share this special film with the audience.

Can the Creative Arts Make Us Healthier?

THE BAY AREA HAS LONG BEEN A CULTURAL HUB FOR WORLD class arts along with attracting its respective creators, affording locals many opportunities for artistic immersion and enjoyment. But besides just sheer pleasure, for those of us on a wellness path, can the arts also actually improve our well-being?

An entire field, neuroaesthetics, devoted to answering that question explores the interaction of the arts and wellness and the “impact of artistic beauty on the human psyche and biological well-being.” In her article “Your Brain on Art: The Case of Neuroaesthetics,”Susan Magsamen, founder and executive director of the International Arts + Mind Lab, an initiative of the Brain Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, states: “The field of neuroaesthetics offers research-based evidence that a variety of arts-based approaches may work to improve quality of life, mobility, mental health,, speech, memory, pain, learning and more. Such interventions could potentially lower the cost and burden of chronic disease, neurological disorders, and mental health issues for millions of people.”

Art is everywhere—if we look. The choices of how we engage with it are endless, from traditional, more passive, experiences such as visiting a museum or a performance to actively creating art ourselves or dropping into a high-tech art immersion installation. We just must make the time.

Increasingly, research is showing it really does not matter what kind of art you engage with to improve well-being, although active participation is the best. “Art” in this article refers collectively to a myriad of creative expressions: music, singing, dance, visual arts, writing and poetry, etc. Whether you are an appreciator or a creator, it is all good—within reason, of course. (If you are a musician or rock concert goer, you might want to watch those decibel levels to protect your hearing, for example.). And if you choose to actively participate and be a creator or maker, you do not have to be Chopin or Monet. No need for judgment or high achievement to gain benefits: it is the creative act that brings the benefits. Even something as simple as doodling, journaling, or coloring (as a child or an adult) qualifies.

ART’S MANY HEALTH BENEFITS

A Mayo Clinic blog post, “The intersection of art and health: How art can help promote well-being,” cites the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine on how “making or even just seeing art can impact health” in the following ways:

• “Increases serotonin levels.”

• “Increases blood flow to the part of the brain associated with pleasure.”

• “Fosters new ways of thinking.”

• (Helps us) “to imagine a more hopeful future.”

Art helps us in other ways, too. Artists and appreciators alike talk about “getting into the zone” or a state of “flow” through the creative arts. In this state, our anxiety decreases; we become more focused and present in the moment, more creative. It is a way to fast-track mindfulness. Through the arts, we can escape the pressures of daily life: work, family pressures, and other toxic influences such as a 24/7 news and social media cycle. Too, art fosters connection to ourselves and to others, the artist to those who love the arts we love providing us with community. It connects us to a sense of place—sometimes spanning centuries—to our history as humans, and to our humanity.

Art is a form of communication between the creator and the viewer/listener that transcends time. The simple act of selfexpression can release emotions, heal trauma (with professional support), and improve confidence and self-esteem. Engaging with the arts exposes us to innovative ideas, new learnings, and ways of thinking and doing which, in turn, increase the brain’s neuroplasticity, its ability to form new connections.

A 2022 study of participants in four age groups asked them to rank artistic activities that helped them “feel better.” “Across all age groups, singing was ranked among the top activities.” According to Susan Magsamen, an assistant professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, “music can be effective at reducing stress because things like rhythm and repetitive lyrics and chords engage multiple regions of the brain.”

It was her love of singing and music that inspired Haute Living, San Francisco publisher Olivia Decker to launch the Olivia Decker Power of Music series with Festival Napa Valley. “I firmly believe music heals the mind, inspires the spirit, and relaxes the body more than anything. It also unites people,” Decker said.

Too, artistic endeavors may help manage chronic pain through a concentrated focus. Jackie Armstrong, Associate Educator, Visitor Research and Experience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shared on her blog, “In living with autoimmune illnesses and chronic pain, art has helped me to be with my symptoms in a different way. The emotional outlet art offers can help dial down the physical sensations, sometimes by simply turning my mind away from them.” No wonder some doctors now prescribe museum visits, art classes, and other creative experiences as a complement to other therapies and treatments. Julia Cameron, renowned speaker and author of many books on creativity, including the worldwide bestseller The Artist’s Way, encourages us to take a weekly solo “artist’s date” which she says is essential to creative awakening. The artist’s date is sheer play, and “that makes it much harder to do,” she says. The idea is to leave your daily routine behind and go on an outing that inspires you. It could be a visit to a museum, a bookstore, a special garden or a flower shop, whatever you fancy. It is your date and no one else’s. She says to think of these “dates” as one-half “artist” and one-half “date.”

HIGH-TECH WELLNESS-ART-TAINMENT: A NEW TREND

Global Wellness (GW) in their TRENDIUM mentions a hot 2024 trend ushering in “a new era of Wellness-Art-Tainment” with “more high-tech, multisensory experiments” particularly in spa and wellness.” These new multisensory art installations and experie nces are becoming more popular across museums, hospitals, hotels, and spas. GW attributes this emerging trend to the convergence of new technologies in generative AI, projection mapping VR, holograms, LED screens and spatial sound, etc. But the word “experiments” is on point. There is still much neuroscientists don’t understand about the calibration of these multi-sensory immersions and their effect on the brain and body; caution must be exercised. The “Sensory Techtopias” report by creative agency VML notes, “while 64% of people expect virtual experiences to activate all their senses; 54% report finding multisensory experiences overwhelming.” This may be particularl y problematic for certain individuals prone to migraines and other conditions. Just watching the video that garnered 70 million views on TikTok of QC Terme’s multisensory cinema pool in its Milan Spa seemed overwhelming to me.

However, not all these experiences max out the senses—some can be soothing and even pique curiosity. I remember attending Asia’s leading technology show several years back. The National Museum had an exhibit whereby via virtual reality one could enter a 12th century painting of a peasant village. It was ethereal and beautiful once you forgot about the clunky VR set on your head. Recently, the San Francisco’s deYoung Museum had their “Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style” exhibit. Visitors could see themselves in three iconic looks via a Snapchat Augmented Reality Mirror. These two examples mix old and new media into a real-life experience. The world is your oyster. Technology has made it possible to visit museums virtually all over the world without leaving home This is a terrific opportunity for folks too busy to travel or for older adults who might have mobility issues. Through Google Arts and Culture, you can access more than 1,200 international museums and galleries through virtual tours, including the Met. Other museums such as the Vatican and the Louvre provide access to virtual tours via their websites.

HEALTHCARE SETTINGS ARE INCORPORATING MORE ART

As the benefits of arts in healing become more accepted, the arts are being incorporated into healthcare settings such as hospitals and health care, and drug and alcohol treatment facilities. Implementation, according to Mayo Clinic Press, usually falls into one of two general categories:

• “Arts in Health: which can include artists trained to help patients have positive creative experiences in a healthcare setting or art in the physical spaces where care is delivered.”

• “Creative Arts Therapies: which includes a licensed professional engaging a patient in arts to address a specific condition or health goal. Therapy can be delivered through visual art, dance, music, poetry or drama and there are corresponding licenses for each type of art specialization.” These therapies theorize “that artistic expression helps people feel better and more motivated to recover while addressing clinical needs such as reducing anxiety and blood pressure.”

The Mayo Clinic’s Dolores Jean Lavins Center for Humanities in Medicine manages internal arts programs, including:

• “Arts at the Bedside: artists visit with patients and offer opportunities to create art during their hospital stay.”

• “Mayo Humanities TV Channel: featuring recorded concerts, lectures, and other art programs on demand in patient rooms.”

In addition to arts in traditional healthcare settings, there are community arts-based programs that have evolved and are available to address certain health issues, such as Dance for Parkinson’s (the Bay Area has five locations). On their website, they cite the following health benefits of dance: “develops strength, fluidity, stamina, and balance; improves cognition connecting the mind to the body; offers social connections and a sense of belonging; sparks creativity and develops problem solving skills; can express stories and emotions through our bodies and how the essence of dance is joy.” We are learning how important movement is for optimal health. Sounds like we should all be dancing, doesn’t it?

In short, carve out time to engage in the arts as part of a wellbalanced wellness program and indulge your creative spirit!

I was hooked on every single comedic scandal the moment I started watching Palm Royale. It quickly became an obsession. When I found out some of my best friends were hooked, too (but, like me, were keeping it a guilty little secret), it was a great relief when the cat (or if you’re watching Palm Royale, the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet) was out of the bag, so we all could obsess over the show together. And if you got goddess Bastet reference, we’re now “palm” pals!

The show stars comedic genius Carol Burnett as Norma, the queen of Palm Beach society; her handsome houseboy and the Palm Royale’s gatekeeping bartender, Robert, played by Ricky Martin; and the country girl, Maxine Dellacorte (Kristen Wiig), who aspires to take her place among Palm Beach’s high society (yet unknowingly married into it). Laura Dern plays Linda, the heiress-turned-anti-Nixon activist who doesn’t want it, and Allison Janney plays Evelyn (whose name says it all), who is determined to take it all. It all began with a conversation I had with fellow Palm Royale enthusiast, my friend and best-selling author Jennifer Walske. I was looking for inspiration for a luncheon to cap off my summer entertaining, and we both were in the midst of watching the show. The aesthetic of affluent Palm Beach, Florida in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the elegant décor of the decadent Palm Royale club, with its lush palms and chic tropical accessories, were the perfect backdrop for a late summer soiree. Jennifer asked me to co-host a birthday luncheon for our mutual friend, Jorge Maumer, before he left for the summer to his home in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in the south of France. She thought Palm Royale would be the perfect theme for his birthday. However, Jorge wished for something more low-key, and Jennifer ultimately opted for hosting an intimate Mad Hatter-themed lunch at San Francisco’s Town & Country Club instead.

But determined to bring this to life, the planning of “Palm Royale: A Scandalous Luncheon” was on!

I immediately turned to my next fellow Palm Royale-obsessed palm pal, the general manager of the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus San Francisco, Katrina Parlato. Just as excited as I was, Katrina and I sought out to plan the perfect menu. Together, we revisited the show and researched what culinary items were en vogue in country clubs of the era. She found some vintage menus from the late 1960s, and we were quick to narrow down the perfect menu offerings—but back to the food later and on to the décor!

To pay homage to the Palm Royale club itself, it all started with the colors used throughout the club where pink and white stripes and hues of palm leaf green are prevalent. Throw in some glamor and a bit of high camp and—voilà—Palm Beach!

In typical Palm Beach fashion, guests made their entrance and took their colorful outfits in all seriousness. Guests entered through two eight-foot potted palm trees into the “Monstera Lounge” where they were greeted with French champagne and signature vintage-themed cocktails featured in the show, including decadent Grasshoppers, (Maxine’s favorite drink), a creamy combination of green crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and heavy cream; classic tropical Mai Tais, which were created in Emeryville, California at the famed tiki bar and restaurant, Trader Vics; and Manhattans (Ed’s way) in honor of my partner, Dr. Edward Winger’s favorite throwback cocktail.

As they sipped on vintage cocktails in the Monstera Lounge, partygoers snapped photos as they sat at retro white marble and brass martini tables on a whimsical, canopied rattan loveseat planked by six-foot Monstera plants. Guests were seated to lunch at a 24-foot table adorned by four whimsical, towering, vividly hand-painted, metal flamingos; hanging, hand-painted, metal hummingbirds; green and white Chinese palm leaf-patterned ginger jars overflowing with exotic florals; gold palm tree candlesticks; elegant, palm leaf-printed bone dishware; and tropical statuary, beneath a canopy of pink and white striped canvas pool umbrellas to mimic the poolside patio umbrellas used in the show.

Inspired by popular country club cuisine of the late 1960s and early ’70s, Katrina and I curated a menu to reflect the era. Neiman Marcus’ corporate executive chef, Jessica Oost, flew in from Dallas, Texas and, along with the assistance of the Rotunda’s executive sous chef, Josh Cochrane, brought the menu to life. Amused guests began with a hearts of palm salad (butter lettuce, cucumbers, Toy Box tomatoes, watermelon radishes, Champagne vinaigrette, and Green Goddess dressing). Keeping with the theme, the second course was seafood in aspic (Dungeness crab

and bay shrimp salad, avocado mousse, soft quail eggs, daisy-shaped carrots, and petite English peas suspended in aspic fumet), and broiled New York Strip Steak with duchess potatoes. To appease every guests’ sweet tooth, an individual baked Alaska finished the scrumptious meal (house-made Bananas Fosters ice cream and vanilla génoise enrobed in toasted meringue over pineapple coulis). And if that weren’t sweet enough, guests took home chic pink crystal glass apothecary jars, each with a keepsake rhinestone brooch (available in a palm tree, flamingo, and pineapple shapes) and filled with Godiva® chocolates.

COCONUT MACAROONS

I’m delighted to share these scrumptiously chewy and decadent coconut macaroons with you, and they may very well be the last recipe you’ll ever need. Dipped in chocolate or not—white chocolate, dark chocolate, or if it is milk chocolate that you prefer—these macaroons are equally marvelous, no matter how you dress them. They’re perfect for your next tropical soiree, Passover, or any special occasion these coming holidays.

INGREDIENTS

~ 3 cups sweetened, shredded coconut

~ 3 large egg whites

~ 2/3 cup baker’s sugar (superfine)

~ 2 tablespoons potato starch, plus 1 teaspoon (or cornstarch)

~ 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract

~ 1 teaspoon coconut extract (optional)

~ ½ teaspoon kosher salt

~ 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips

PREPARE MACAROONS

1. In a large bowl, toss thoroughly to combine: shredded coconut, potato starch (or cornstarch, if using), baker’s sugar, and kosher salt. Set aside.

2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together egg whites, vanilla extract, and coconut extract until foamy (about 20 seconds).

3. Stir egg white mixture into coconut mixture until thoroughly combined.

4. Tightly cover with plastic wrap and set aside for 1 hour, allowing coconut to soften. Give it a good stir every 20 minutes.

5. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Line one half-sheet pan with parchment paper.

6. Give the macaroon batter another stir.

7. Using a medium-sized scoop (1½ ounces), scoop macaroon batter onto the parchment-lined sheet pan, 1 inch apart.

8. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 minutes or until the tops and bottoms are golden brown.

9. Let cool on the pan 5 minutes, then transfer the coconut macaroons to a cooling rack to cool completely (about 40 minutes).

DIP MACAROONS IN CHOCOLATE

1. Line a sheet pan with parchment and set aside.

2. In a microwave-safe bowl in increments of 20 seconds, microwave (on HIGH) to melt chocolate chips (about 1½ to 2 minutes total), stirring in between. When most of the chocolate chips have melted and only some lumps remain, stop using the microwave and stir to finish melting. Alternatively, use an electric chocolate melting pot.

3. Holding the top of the cooled coconut macaroon, gently dip the bottom into melted chocolate, pressing to coat up the side ¼ inch. Gently wipe off any excess chocolate with a rubber spatula. Set the dipped macaroon onto the parchment-lined sheet pan.

4. Repeat with all macaroons. Microwave the chocolate at 15-second intervals if it starts to thicken.

5. Transfer any remaining melted chocolate to a disposable pastry bag or zipper bag. With a pair of scissors, cut the tip just enough to allow chocolate to easily pipe a thin line.

6. In a back-and-forth, zigzag motion and using slight pressure, pipe a drizzle of melted chocolate over the tops of the coconut macaroons.

7. Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature for 3 hours or set in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

8. Store in an airtight container. Keeps for a week.

Too Much of a Good Thing: Overcoming Concentrated Portfolio Risk

EVERYONE KNOWS THE OLD SAYING ABOUT NOT PUTTING ALL your eggs in one basket. This is especially important for investors, yet we still often find concentrated positions in client portfolios.

Whether these assets were acquired through an inheritance, a liquidity event, an employer compensation structure, or the appreciation of a long-held investment, the result may be too much of a good thing. A high concentration of a single investment within a portfolio—one that may even be an outstanding performer—may become a growing investment risk as time goes on. It’s like sitting down at the roulette table in a casino and putting down a good chunk of your net worth on a single number or color. What could go wrong?

UNDERSTANDING TOTAL INVESTMENT RISK

Using a broad definition, total investment risk can be calculated by adding systematic risk and unsystematic risk. Systematic risk, or market risk, represents the risk of loss arising from a potential broad market decline. Unsystematic risk, or idiosyncratic risk, represents the risk of price changes due to the unique circumstances of a specific security.

Total Risk = Systematic Risk + Unsystematic Risk

Unsystematic risks will generally be higher if you have fewer investments in your portfolio. As the number of holdings rise, the volatility of return, or risk, typically falls.

The implications of this conclusion are crucial to expected returns. A high-risk stock does not necessarily have the greatest expected return. Consider a biotech stock with a drug that is in clinical trials to determine its effectiveness. If it turns out that the drug is effective and safe, stock returns should be high. If, on the other hand, the clinical trials are deemed a failure, the stock will fall. However, if an investor buys a fund holding a group of biotech stocks, the sensitivity to trials at a specific company will be partially mitigated.

HOW TO REDUCE THE CAPITAL GAINS DILEMMA

Investors generally hold concentrated positions for psychological and financial reasons. A common psychological reason is an attachment to the holding because it was a gift from a parent or part of an estate settlement. A common financial reason is to defer paying capital gains.

One way to manage capital gains tax liability is to tackle the issue head on. Once an investor understands the actual versus perceived tax liability, the problem may be more manageable than feared. Consider an investor with a $5 million portfolio that contains a $1 million position with a cost basis of $500,000:

• At a 20% long-term capital gains rate, the sale of the position would generate a $100,000 tax bill.

• The tax cost would represent a 10% cost relative to the position but only a 2% cost relative to the total portfolio.

In this example, the 2% cost to remove the unsystematic risk may be manageable. Alternatively, selling half the position would lower the risk and only cost the portfolio 1%. In the end, a 1% to 2% tax liability is likely more tolerable when the market is up 10% on the year rather than flat or down.

UNWINDING CONCENTRATED POSITIONS MAY BE DIFFICULT

Determining the tax liability for unwinding a concentrated position is easy. The hard part is calculating the future benefits of diversifying a portfolio. This can only be accomplished using return assumptions for both the single security and the overall market. As a result, the ultimate decision to sell or hold comes down to other factors, such as risk tolerance, total portfolio risk, costs, and time horizon.

• Investors with higher risk tolerance may be comfortable with more concentrated positions.

• A portfolio with singularly large or multiple concentrated positions will increase total portfolio risk.

• Both tax liability and transaction costs should be determined before reducing a position.

• A long-term time horizon may compound the unsystematic risk over time. Hence, reducing the position sooner is generally the most prudent decision.

PLAN AHEAD

Here are some commonly used solutions that may fit your liquidity needs and risk tolerance:

1. Tax-efficient gifting. Instead of gifting cash, consider donating long-term appreciated securities. Contributing long-term appreciated assets directly eliminates capital gains taxes. Fund a charitable remainder trust (CRT). A CRT allows an investor to receive a charitable deduction as well as an annual income stream if the client is the beneficiary.

2. Monetization. Set a long-term diversification plan to reduce concentrated positions over several tax years. Setting a capital gains budget will allow your advisor to advantageously reduce positions when rebalancing your portfolio throughout the year. In addition, if in any year your income declines, you may find it beneficial to sell a larger portion of your concentrated position.

3. Hedging. Use derivatives (puts, calls, and collars) to reduce the risks of a concentrated position. This solution, however, may be complex and costly.

4. Tax-efficient diversification. Tax loss harvesting strategies help investors balance the capital gains they are willing to realize against an acceptable

deviation from their intended market exposure. Direct indexing may be a powerful tool to facilitate tax loss harvesting. By enabling investors to own individual securities directly rather than through a fund, direct indexing provides the flexibility to selectively sell and replace securities with gains or losses while maintaining the investor’s intended market exposure. Cash additions to the portfolio (via dividends, interest, or additional funds) organically diversify concentrated positions.

History reminds us that high-quality companies can disappear. Whether through competitive innovation (JCPenney, Eastman Kodak, and Blockbuster Entertainment), scandal (MCI WorldCom and Enron), acquisition (Tiffany & Co and Mattel), or market duress (Lehman Brothers), it is easy to recall how a onceproud, large company’s stock or bond prices were quickly decimated.

Although investors may profit from holding large quantities of a specific asset, it is important to recognize the risk and consider strategies to offset concentrated positions.

Anya was recently appointed as a youth ambassador for the Vatican to the United States as well as a representative of Pope Francis’ personal foundation, Scholas Occurrentes. Scholas’ U.S. ambassadors lead programming in the United States and abroad on issues dear to them. Their commitment to the foundation is approved and blessed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

Anya’s leadership, sense of community and justice, love of travel, ability to form new friendships, and love of soccer made her the ideal candidate to represent the U.S. and California as a youth ambassador. In May, Anya joined youth ambassadors from all over the world at the Vatican to learn skills to facilitate open and meaningful conversations from Pope Francis through art, sports, and music. Anya’s recent trip to Italy was not a vacation; it involved long days of work for the purpose of lifting others. Anya left inspired with a commitment to bring her skills back to Marin where she is a student at Marin Country Day School and plays competitive club soccer.

Pope Francis, an ardent lover of soccer since his youth in Argentina, saw the unique potential for soccer to bring together kids, engaging both their minds and hearts. Soccer is the most universal of sports—loved globally and accessible across all income levels—making it perfect to engage teens and high school students from all backgrounds. With this idea, Scholas’ pivotal program, Pelota de Trapo, was born. His Holiness sees soccer as a way to build connection and community, unifying communities of young people and opening up a pathway for young people to have deeper, more meaningful conversations without the usual defensiveness.

Scholas was created by Pope Francis in 2013 when he assumed the papacy, with the goal to promote connection and community among youth. It collaborates with half a million educational institutions globally, coming to the United States in 2023. It currently operates in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, and Dallas. Pope Francis was troubled by the mental health challenges and loneliness of youth in the United States and thought sports would be a unique way to engage American youth. The program aims to focus on listening and understanding in a world that no longer prioritizes these fundamental skills. The vision for Scholas is to lead educational transformation within the school system to develop a new generation of teens emotionally skilled and able to lead changes and transformations for a more equitable and just society.

When asked about her message to youth in the United States, Anya said, “Make sure that you support and include everyone, even if it is not in big ways. Find something you care deeply about and make sure to work on it as hard as you can.”
