This issue is an emotional one for me, as the cover story about Gordon Getty and the story of Susan Williams on her late husband, Robin Williams, were close to my heart. I met Robin a couple of times in Paris, the first time at the celebration of Lance Armstrong’s victory in the Tour de France. He told me jokes about Tiburon-Belvedere. It was one of the saddest moments when I heard of Robin’s suicide. I went to his Tiburon home and placed flowers at his front gate, along with dozens of other fans. Our editor-in-chief’s interview with Robin’s widow, Susan Schneider Williams, seeks to understand his life and death. Susan’s dedication to the beloved comedian and actor’s impact was immeasurable and gives Robin’s legacy new meaning. Susan spoke to Teresa about the details and complexity of the Lewy body dementia Robin suffered.
For the cover story, we feature a different journey: the journey of Sharon Stone through her art exhibition, currently in San Francisco and titled “My Eternal Failure.” I have fond memories of my journey with Sharon, which started in 1998 when she contacted me to buy a home. It wasn’t easy to find a home matching Sharon’s artistic taste and need for maximum privacy.
Our cover story subject, Gordon Getty, is truly an original Renaissance man. I’ve met Gordon dozens of times over the last 35 years, since we were both on the board of the now-defunct Marin Opera in early 1990s. Gordon is larger-than-life, not because of his billions, but because of his big personality and openhearted generosity. He inspired my pledge of $5 million to Festival Napa Valley for the Olivia Decker Power of Music Series. Gordon announced his $5 million matching grant when he hosted a dinner at his home to welcome me and others as new board members of Festival Napa Valley in November 2019. His grant was for five years and matched anyone who donated to festival during that period. My donation fulfilled his remaining grant within less than three years. Gordon was impressed and donated another $5 million matching grant in January 2023. At nearly age 90, Gordon’s long, rich life is iconic and fascinating. It’s truly interesting to read even a glimpse of his vast world.
I finally found her dream home in Sea Cliff, which belonged to a gay couple who had no interest in selling. I tricked them into letting me bring Sharon to their home. When we arrived, Sharon took one quick look and saw Pacific Ocean on one side, the Golden Gate Bridge on the other side, and a beach below. She grabbed my hand, pulled me into the kitchen, and told me, “Get me this fucking house!” I had to convince the owners to sell, although they had nowhere to go. They moved to Ritz Carlton Hotel for a few months.
We also profile Daydreamers founder, Bay Area entrepreneur Katina Bajaj, who is a clinical psychology researcher, author, speaker, and creator. You must read this article to understand why, although daydreaming seems to be not doing anything, it works the brain to make myriad connections through creativity and help us with burnout and stress.

We also profile British fashion designer Marchesa’s co-founder, Georgina Chapman. I met at her at a 2019 fashion show for San Francisco Opera Guild’s annual fundraiser. I won the bid to go to New York Fashion Week, where I visited her at the Marchesa atelier. Georgina returned to Fashion Week this year. Her flowing, colorfully floral gowns are so feminine and romantic. I think the world would be much more peaceful if every woman dressed in Marchesa!
I got the home in escrow for Sharon in May 1998. She invited me to the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of her movie, The Mighty. We walked up the red carpet together and faced hundreds of cameras taking her picture. She also invited me to amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS auction gala where Sharon was the auctioneer. I watched her sell off all the items. Before the concert started, she surprised everyone and auctioned the songs Elton John was about to perform for $250,000 each, Ringo Starr’s drum sticks for $200,000, and a dance with her for $250,000.
In this issue’s Haute Events, I cover the San Francisco Opera’s 100th anniversary concert and a dinner with the artists. This one-night-only centennial celebration featured a program spanning San Francisco Opera’s first century with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus; conductors Eun Sun Kim, Sir Donald Runnicles, and Patrick Summers; and 15 vocal soloists who have been active on the opera stage for decades. The concert included projected archival imagery from 100 years of San Francisco Opera history. Founded in 1923, San Francisco Opera is only the third American opera company to reach the centennial milestone.
In 2007, she auctioned off a kiss from George Clooney for $350,000! She really knows how to open wealthy wallets. Sharon served as the global fundraising chairman for amfAR for 22 years, starting in 1995 when she was asked to step in for Elizabeth Taylor. She has raised over $235 million at the Cannes Film Festival Cinema Against AIDS auctions for AIDS research. “Sharon has turned the element of auction into entertainment,” says amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole. “People don’t feel imposed upon. She has this way of engaging people, and it’s very hard to say no to Sharon.” Her contribution to the AIDS Foundation to find cures is truly remarkable.
Sharon has a big heart and passion for humanity. With a high IQ of 154, she is no dumb blonde sex symbol. Over the 26 years I have known her, Sharon has continued reinventing herself and stayed on the world’s stage.

Young Bocelli has an amazing voice like his father, Andrea. He will perform a mix of classic and contemporary songs. The Manetti Shrem Opera on July 21 will be Don Pasquale, starring Lucas Meachem, Alexey Lavrov, Serena Saenz, and Xabier Anduaga. Both concerts go on stage at Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena. Sharon used her surreal interpretation of color and light, acquired after her near-death experience, to paint her heartbreak and emotions on the canvas. Her exhibit at the 181 Fremont penthouse gallery in San Francisco ends on August 31, 2024.

FOR THOSE HEADING TO THE BEL PAESE THIS SUMMER (and who isn’t?), shake up the typical itinerary: head to the islands. Italy has over 400 isles and 13 archipelagos, and not only do these islands grant sun and sea, but they also have white wine varieties that pair perfectly with island life and, of course, island fare.
Some are familiar, like Montecristo (yes, the Count), Elba (where Napoleon lived in exile), Capri (full of international celebrities), Sardinia (full of Italian celebrities), and Stromboli, an Aeolian Island with an active volcano. These islands often have volcanic soils that enrich wines with a unique minerality, and due to the challenging terrain and remoteness, their vines need hand-harvesting. They benefit from sunny warmth and cooling sea breezes, good day-to-night temperature fluctuations, and the preservation of native grapes by virtue of their relative isolation.
Beyond Sardinia’s Vermentino and Pantelleria’s Passito di Pantelleria, there are many little-known island wines to explore. Mother Nature has graced these islands with breathtaking panoramas and rare wines that are lively, summery, and highly quaffable.
GORGONA
Vermentino & Ansonica
Tuscan wine producer—and 30th generation of Frescobaldi— Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi chose Gorgona, the smallest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, to grow vines for the Gorgona Project. Once home to hermits and monks, the island became a penal colony in 1869 and is now Europe’s only working penal island. Here in the sun and sea air, inmates live out the remainder of their prison terms, moving around freely to work and learn new professions, which will help them assimilate into society at the end of their sentences. The Frescobaldi agronomists and oenologists work with the prisoners, planting, growing, and harvesting Vermentino and Ansonica to make the extraordinary white blend Gorgona. It shows floral and mineral aromas and oozes exotic flavors like pineapple, mango, and passionfruit, followed by citrusy tangerine.
Biancolella
The Pontine Islands off the Roman Coast—where Romans go on holiday—hold a special place in literature: a reference in Homer’s Odyssey in which Ponza was known as Aeaea and where Odysseus drank “wine as tawny mild as honey” and was bewitched by Circe. Casale Del Giglio grows its Faro Della Guardia Biancolella fruit in the volcanic limestone soils on the island. Its aromas of peach and apricot meld with citrus notes and island minerality.
Falanghina & Greco di Tufo
The most famous Italian island, Capri, is a part of the Campanian Archipelago in the Bay of Naples and boasts its own DOC (denominazione di origine controllata). Capri Bianco wine blends Greco di Tufo and Falanghina, believed to be a part of the Roman Empire’s famous Falernia. There is no time like the present to try Capri DOC wine—some landowners are removing vines because the island’s tourism makes vineyards less profitable than other tourist attractions.
Etna Bianco
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, yet it also incorporates the archipelagos known as the Aeolian and Egadi Islands and Pantelleria, Lampedusa, and Mozia. Still, mainland Sicily’s Mount Etna gives white varieties Carricante and Catarratto (also known as Lucido) grapes a place to thrive before combining them to make ultra-refreshing Etna Bianco. Etna Bianco typically displays high acidity and minerality, with lemon, lime, and grapefruit notes and delicate undertones of jasmine and orange blossom.
Malvasia
Named for Aeolus, god of the winds, the Aeolian Islands are gorgeous slices of paradise known for Malvasia grapes. In the past, the island of Salina was primarily known for its Malvasia delle Lipari Passito, a sweet wine with a rich, aromatic profile. Tasca D’Almerita, an eighth generation Sicilian winemaking family and Wine Enthusiast’s 2019 European Winery of the Year, produces a beautiful Malvasia Passito along with two dry Malvasia wines, Didyme and Vigna di Paola, with fruit grown on Salina and nearby Vulcano Island. Tasca d’Almerita’s estate, Capofaro, sits on a promontory overlooking the vast sea, and with its on-site lodging, it may be the ultimate in enotourism. Capofaro, named after the 19th-century lighthouse that stands over the village and vineyards, is part of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux collection.
Grillo
Tasca d’Almerita does it again, taking on the entire island of Mozia and planting it to vine in 2007. Mozia is off the western coast of Sicily close to Marsala, Trapani, and Saline’s salt flats.
There are only two things on the island—vines and ancient ruins. Mozia’s significant archaeological finds date to Phoenician times. Alberto Tasca explained, “Imagine the Acropolis with vineyards. That’s Mozia.”
Here, they grow the Sicilian grape Grillo to make a crisp, slightly savory wine. A crossing of native grapes Catarratto and Moscato d’Alessandria (Zibibbo), Grillo shows broad versatility depending on where it is grown and cultivated. The water around Mozia is so shallow that ships cannot approach it, and because Tasca cannot vinify on the island, they pick at dawn and quickly transport the grapes in small boats to the mainland to press them while they are still cool.

In the Egadi Islands off the west coast of Sicily, Favignana Island is a stunning gem accessed only by boat from Trapani and Marsala. It is owned by Sicily’s Florio dynasty and home to Firriato’s Calamoni Estate, the only wine producing facility in the archipelago. The Firriato “Favinia” collection includes a vinification of three grapes cultivated on the island—Zibibbo, Grillo, and Catarratto—to make white blend La Muciara, renowned for capturing the fresh and vibrant flavors of Sicily.

CHAMPAGNE, BUBBLES, AND SPARKLING WINE ARE ON everyone’s minds these days. However, not all bubbly is created equal, and Champagne, which is only made in the Champagne region of France, is considered the best of the best.
Decades ago, French Champagne experts brought their skills to California wine country, expanding their production to include sparkling wine made on American terroir. By doing so, they increased their visibility and made their wines more widely available in the robust U.S. market. In a way, they invented an American version of Champagne.
The French houses chose to establish in certain areas of California wine country, such as the southern part of Carneros and the northern California coast’s Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. These regions have climate conditions like those in the Champagne AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), the only place in the world where sparkling wine may be called Champagne.
Most California outposts use the same grapes typically used by their parent companies in Champagne—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meineur. They also use the time-intensive méthode traditionelle of sparkling wine production, which involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, the source of the iconic bubbles.
Despite their similarities, the U.S. and French wine regions are a study of tradition versus innovation. The French houses follow centuries of regulations and strict control over the final product’s quality, while the U.S. subsidiaries exist in relative freedom. They can choose which varieties to use, where to plant, and when to harvest.
Because most U.S. producers follow the traditional method and use the same varieties, the apparent difference between locales is terroir. Three California-French producers are making remarkable American versions of French Champagne: Roederer (The Roederer Estate), Taittinger (Domaine Carneros), and Moët & Chandon (Domaine Chandon).
The most popular region for growing grapes used in sparkling wine is southern Carneros, where cool maritime conditions allow longer hang time and better acid retention in the fruit, and the long, hot days and cooler nights produce an ideal amount of acidity and ripeness. The Taittinger family was so impressed with the region’s potential for excellent sparkling wine that, in 1987, they expanded operations there and named the winery after the area—Domaine Carneros.
Remi Cohen, CEO of Domaine Carneros, described how the U.S. location has adopted Taittinger’s Champagne techniques. “In California, we are not beholden to the same rules and regulations as they are in Champagne, so we could release a sparkling wine three months after the second fermentation. But because of our ownership with the Taittinger family, we pay homage to the rules. So, all our wines are vintage dated, and they are all aged a minimum of three years. Our Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs is aged a full six years.”
It’s the largest Champagne house in the world, producing close to 30 million bottles annually. Based in Yountville with vineyards in Carneros, Napa Valley’s Domaine Chandon opened in 1973 and became America’s first French-owned sparkling winery. It had all the ingredients for phenomenal success: the French experience and backing, an innovative approach, and the California sun. Another claim to fame: The French house has the honor of making the world-renowned Dom Perignon.
The original Louis Roederer established his eponymous Champagne house almost 200 years ago, and former Louis Roederer president Jean-Claude Rouzaud founded the U.S. winery just four decades ago in Anderson Valley. The winery has been one of California’s leading and most consistent domestic sparkling wine producers.
In 2023, Arnaud Weyrich, senior vice president and winemaker of Roederer Estate, was quoted in The Press Democrat, explaining the philosophy behind Roederer’s U.S. expansion. “Champagne has a finite acreage in the appellation,” Weyrich said. “The family felt that creating its own estate in California with a similar philosophy of its farming and winemaking in France would help expose Louis Roederer to a new generation of fine wine drinkers in the U.S.”

The accomplished artist shares the intimate story behind her art exhibition, “My Eternal Failure.”

When Sharon Stone announces she is a failure, your basic instinct is to protest. Here is a 66-year-old, ravishingly beautiful, and accomplished painter and actress with worldwide recognition, multiple gallery shows, an Emmy, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award nomination, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But her most recent foray into the arts, a powerfully moving exhibit of paintings at Gallery 181 in San Francisco, is titled, “My Eternal Failure.” The title refers to the late 1990s, a period in San Francisco when she experienced the breakdown of her marriage, a protracted custody battle over her toddler son, and a brain hemorrhage which left her clinging to life for nine days in the ICU. “A lot of it was painted because I wanted to work out all these feelings and thoughts ... like get it all out,” she explains. “And you have to not bite into that seed of bitterness, like, ‘Oh, me and my stroke. Me and my bad relationship.’ And then this is where you get to this happy place. But it’s a journey.”
The exhibition is hung between the sweeping Bay views from the gallery’s 56th floor, high above SOMA. It showcases Stone’s complex and chastening experiences from a 6-year span at the height of her Hollywood career. In 1998, Stone married Phil Bronstein, then executive editor of the San Francisco Examiner and later the San Francisco Chronicle, and relocated to the city. Together they purchased a house in Sea Cliff and, in 2000, adopted their son, Roan. In 2001, a life-threatening, ruptured brain artery left her impaired and in severe pain, arresting her film career and upending her already stressful home life. “Phil was never there,” she says. “He never had his phone. I don’t know where the hell he went. Our marriage was a desert.” By 2003, divorce and custody proceedings were underway, sending Stone into a tailspin of confusion and circumstance.
Although her brain injury came with significant challenges to her body and mind, it also amplified her creative abilities, enabling her to sense color in an entirely different way: a phenomenon called synesthesia. She returned to painting to process and reinterpret this painful time. As an academically gifted child who won a college scholarship at 15, Stone had studied art, architecture, and design at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, but left to pursue modeling and acting. She returned to complete her degree in 2016.

While most of the titles directly refer to her SF sojourn, most canvases in the show were painted over the past few years. “Once I got the San Francisco show, I was like, ‘Okay, we’re going to look at my eternal failure. San Francisco was where everything fell apart for me.’ And then I was able to finish this painting that I’d been working on for three years.” Stone points to the large canvas that titled the entire show. “I’d been putting it away and pulling it back out, throwing it out in the garden and letting it get rained on. Then finally it all came together.”
She points to another canvas, “The Party,” a dark background writhing with serpent shapes. “They’re snake skins. There’s only one actual snake. Everybody changes. And snakes are the only animal that let go of their skins and change and change and change.” Stone recalls an aggressive gallerist telling her that she should replicate these motifs multiple times, as they were very marketable. “I got approached by people who create commercialism for artists. And they wanted me to do nothing but this. They were like, ‘We can do a whole show of just your snake paintings, and we can make prints and t-shirts and sweatshirts and really do it.’ And I just thought, ‘Nope.’ I’m not just a painter of snakes, I’m a painter of my feelings and thoughts … like so.” She gestures to a mysterious canvas across the room, titled “Hoisted On My Own Petard.”
Her creative inspiration involves lucid dreaming. “Sometimes I dream them before I paint them, or I get an idea and pull out a canvas and start working. The canvas has a kind of vibration and
tells me what it wants to do.” She leads us to the work depicting rocks and spikes. “I was so clear what I was going to do before I started. This brown I love so much. This is about how your life starts and people tell you, ‘Okay, this is what you are doing. You have this big pile of rocks, and I expect you to do this, this, and this. You’re going to put them over here, and that’s going to be your life. And then you think, ‘Whose fucking life am I living? I’ve got to go make my own goddamn life.’” She adds, “When I was dead on the table, I thought, perhaps the life you gave me is killing me. I just did this because that’s what everybody said a woman had to do.” She points to another canvas, titled “Be Like Water.” “This was something I had to learn. If you want to survive the craggy road, you have to be like water.”
She ushers us into a room and gestures toward “The Bridge,” which refers to her brain hemorrhage. What at first looks like a mountain becomes a view of the top of a head with outstretched arms extended toward both edges of the canvas. Below the body is a swath of deep blood red. Hovering across the top is a graphite grey field punctuated by five luminous orbs. “I kept hearing Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ when I was in the MRI machine and after. And this is me. And these are the people I saw when I died.” She points to the hovering orbs. “They were all around me, saying it was okay. I didn’t know what to do and I was so afraid, but you become like a temple, and then all this happens … and then you come back.”
When questioned about why she has chosen to reveal such personal backstories for her art, Stone demurs. “You know how Van Gogh went to a mental hospital, and then he painted his best paintings because he felt safe to hear the voices from the divine? And we still hear it every time we look at his paintings.”
The conversation shifts to Stone’s painting practice. “I have a studio next door to my home. And I have a really good studio manager whom I feel so safe with because he leaves me alone. He handles the business side. I work on multiple pieces. I might leave this in the studio; I might put this in storage. That one I left outside. I have literally sprayed paintings with the hose, mopped them with a Swiffer®. Sometimes, you just have to beat them up.” She sighs “It’s like they are beings, you know? You have to talk to them. You have to romance them. You have to yell at them. It just depends.” She takes a deep breath. “The more I get engaged in this process, the more I understand that all things just have different densities. Nothing is solid. If there are degrees of density and everything is a wavelength, then … everything sounds like color. If steam turns into water, then water can turn into steam, right?” Stone becomes even more animated. “Once you understand that, you can do whatever you want. You can make whatever you want. You can change the direction of things that you could stop being afraid
about, especially phony people doing phony things, because they’re not really changing anything.” She takes another deep breath.
In light of her depiction of “failure,” we ask Stone about her definition of success. “It’s the exact same thing. I just had to accept that my greatest failure—all the terrible things that happened to me here—was the greatest thing that ever happened. The most horrible person I ever met, who did the most horrible things to me that you could ever imagine, was my greatest teacher, the greatest illuminator possible. Lucky me.” She takes a deep breath then adds, “I picked the typeface for my show on purpose: Click Clack. But it took me a long time to turn back into steam.”
The face that launched so many films gives a knowing look, hovering 56 floors above the earth with the same concentrated gaze that has hovered so memorably on screen. “Life is never really like the fairy tales. It’s different, you know, beautiful but different.” A smile emerges as she spreads her arms to include the San Francisco light pouring over the paintings that transport her back to this place and time. “So, this is kind of where I have traveled.”

Aman New York is one of those rare properties; the one that comes along once in a blue moon and makes such a significant impact that it has all of the world — never mind all of Manhattan — abuzz. The JeanMichel Gathy-designed property is nothing less than an oasis in the city, so quietly luxurious that it’s very nearly like not being in New York at all. Yet, here it is: smack dab in the center, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, two blocks away from Central Park, close to Broadway, Rockefeller Center, and more. Its 83 suites are among the largest in the city and inspired by the airy architecture of Aman’s properties in Southeast Asia. Luxury brand Raffles has come to play in the States in a big way, opening its first North American property in Boston’s Back Bay. The 35-story, 147room, sustainable, new-build hotel represents the first mixed-use development for the 136-year-old Singaporean brand. The $400 million investment in the project is a reflection here: this LEED-certified building is a beautiful property, with a dramatic exterior sheathed in reflective glass — a tribute to its neighbor, the John Hancock Tower. Awardwinning hospitality design firm Stonehill Taylor drew inspiration from the city’s historic and cultural surroundings to imagine the locally inspired design. Guests will notice details like copper accents (a nod to Paul Revere’s copper plating company), historical illustrations that adorn custom wall coverings, and greenery that references the window boxes found throughout the Back Bay. The opening of Fontainebleau Las Vegas is easily the biggest of the year, and I do mean in every way: scope, size, prestige, and fanfare. The hotel, which makes its debut this month on December 13, is a 67-story affair residing on nearly 25 acres of land at the end of the Las Vegas Strip with 3,644 luxury rooms and suites, 550,000 square feet of customizable meeting and convention space, more than 150,000 square feet of gaming space, a collection of world-class restaurants and shops, exquisite pools, vibrant nightlife, and vitality-enhancing spa and wellness offerings. It features designs and collaborations with some of the best players in the game: Carlos Zapata Studio, David Collins Studio, Rockwell Group, Lissoni & Partners, Jeff Leatham, Lifescapes, and Jeffrey Beers International, among others. The rooms and suites, as designed by an in-house team led by Fontainebleau Development’s John Rawlins, evoke an understated, timeless elegance in a color palette of blue and silver water tones with dashes of coral-pink, accented by mercury-glass mirrors and brass details. Los Angeles has been having a bit of a hotel renaissance in recent years, and this is apparent in Hotel Per La, the latest five-star stay to open downtown. As with many things in the area, what’s old has become new again. The hotel is housed in the former Giannini Place building, originally built in 1922 as the headquarters of the Bank of Italy. Reimagined by HN Capital Partners and Sage Hospitality Group, the property features 241 rooms and suites, as well as grand public spaces for guests and locals alike. The hotel includes 10,000 square feet of event space and an array of dining options such as Ristorante Per L’Ora, an upscale Italian restaurant; Café Ora, a daytime café; and Bar Clara, a rooftop bar offering poolside drinks and dramatic views of the LA skyline. “Per La” — “for the” in Italian — is a nod to the building’s Italian beginnings: its founder, Amadeo Pietro Giannini, believed in the dignity and abilities of those commonly overlooked, and as such, “Per La” means “for Los Angeles, and people like you.” Today, the 12-story property retains the building’s signature neoclassical architectural features. The new crowning jewel of Dallas’ 19-block Harwood District is Hôtel Swexan, a 134-room boutique concept that charmingly fuses the family-owned property’s Swiss heritage with quintessential Texan hospitality. It is, indeed, where its rather unique name comes from, “Swexan” meaning “Swiss meets Texan.” The hotel has a serious pedigree as well: it’s located in a 22-story modern tower designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who was not only recognized as one of Time magazine’s most influential people of 2021, but who is responsible for the Tokyo Olympic stadium, the new Rolex Building in Harwood District, and the LVMH headquarters in Japan. The mirrored structure exemplifies Kuma’s philosophy that buildings should enrich the connection between their architecture and the environment they’re in. And in the case of Hôtel Swexan, the interiors mirror the exterior, with art and design elements inspired by exploration and adventure drawing cues from various global cities inclusive of 100 different types of natural stones and woods and decorations of antique fireplace mantels from the 19th and 20th centuries. The newly opened St. Regis Chicago has a pretty impressive pedigree: the 101-story tower is the tallest building in the world designed by a female architect, and who wouldn’t be here for that? Beyond this unique selling point, its design is very creative, featuring a distinctive design made of an interconnected series of stacked, frustum-shaped towers that extend to various heights. The building’s crystalline form nods to the facets of a shimmering gem, with a gradient of greenblue glass inspired by nature, meant to be a reflection of the colors of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Its 159 guestrooms and 33 suites, all designed by Gensler in a curated palette of natural stone and wood, follow suit on the nature front. In contrast, the hotel’s common spaces, spa, and Presidential Suite, designed by KTGY Simeone Deary Design Group, are decorated in metallic materials and colors such as copper and rust. Interwoven, geometric details and angular lines nod to the Great Chicago Fire as well as the city’s geographic interconnectivity of waterways, buildings, and green spaces. The Mayfair House Hotel & Garden isn’t a new hotel per se, but this Coconut Grove original just completed a massive remodel two years in the making, debuting a brand-new name to boot — it was known as the Mayfair Hotel & Spa. This haute hotel, with the glittering and glorious Victoria Harbour as its backdrop, is guaranteed to be a must-visit destination for the jet set amidst landmarks like K11 MUSEA, Avenue of Stars, City Art Square, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Native designer Chi Wing Lo has managed to seamlessly blend the city’s historical past with its innovative present via a rich tapestry of 368 rooms and 129 suites, as well as gentle references throughout the property, balancing tactile natural materials. An iconic white marble staircase, resembling a miniature waterfall, and the grandeur of the classic design set the stage for a magnificent experience, transforming even the smallest of details into a study of the city’s past. And while guests may appreciate this insight into the past, they’ll fully love its modern, endlessly epicurean present. There are very few places in the world that are more traditional or distinctive than Kyoto, and at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa, those traditional elements are adhered to respectfully and perfectly, creating an incredibly authentic experience. The Mitsui Fudosan Group’s flagship is located right in the heart of Kyoto, directly opposite UNESCO World Heritage site Nijō Castle, the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period, across Horikawa-dori. This 75,000-square-foot property was the former home of the Mitsui family for over 250 years, which is reflected in its current reincarnation of 160 guest rooms — because what makes this hotel such a standout is its sense of history. There are quiet Japanese gardens set among lily ponds, tiny wooden bridges, and water features, visible from many of the guest rooms, as well as a subterranean natural hot spring in the THERMAL SPRING SPA. There are even two private onsens for a decadent experience (best enjoyed whilst nibbling on caviar and sipping champagne, in my humble opinion). The culinary concepts echo the wonders found throughout the property. At TOKI, a mix of Japanese and French cuisine is perfectly prepared item by item on a long, teppan-brushed steel counter. That the highest-quality Matsusaka wagyu beef found anywhere in Japan is served here is no accident: Mie Prefecture — the current home of the Mitsui family — is the source of said meat. At Italian eatery FORNI, guests can experience all the 24 distinct terms of the solar calendar through flavorful dishes made from the freshest Italian and locally-sourced Kyoto ingredients (many of which are prepared on an okudo-san — a traditional Japanese kamado-style cooking range — reimagined as an oven for pizzas and oven-roasted dishes). Visible from all seating locations, the garden at FORNI reflects the seasons. There is also THE GARDEN BAR, which serves up both local and global liquor-forward libations, as well as SHIKI-NO-MA, a private space created from reconstructed Japanese cypress, a private dining space where among other experiences — some of the last remaining Kyoto geisha or geikos (traditional Japanese female entertainers) treat guests to a dance, a lingering look at an ancient art form of yesteryear.

Dramatic, nearly 400-foot green columns tower through the terraces, creating a spectacle of thriving flora. Mirrored ceilings reflect each unique landscape, from the sparkling pools of Beach Terrace to the manicured lawns of Garden Terrace, while open-air spaces welcome abundant fresh breeze and natural daylight for exquisite alfresco experiences. It’s no surprise that this 347-room hotel is as green as they come, with a slew of sustainability features inclusive of renewable solar panel technology, an in-room filtered water system, and a bio-digester system that transforms food waste into cleaning water. But make no mistake: this is still a luxury hotel, and one that’s complemented by the crème de la crème of concepts to boot. Aman Tokyo doesn’t have to shout how great it is: this stunner need only whisper, and it will catch the wind. Aman’s first urban concept hotel is a true oasis, set high above the Japanese capital, offering dramatic panoramic views of the Imperial Palace Gardens and neighboring Ginza shopping district. The Otemachi Forest, a meticulously created natural oasis at the foot of the hotel, is brought inside through natural materials, earthy bamboo, and traditional Japanese design elements like washi paper, stone, and large ofuro soaking tubs, found in all 84 suites. This design aesthetic is most visibly apparent in the property’s masterpiece of a lobby, where an engawa — a wooden detail seen in traditional Japanese residences that divides the inside and out — impressively soars nearly 100 feet high. It’s a city hotel to be sure, a beautiful respite for business travelers that offers a plethora of quiet and calm experiences throughout the stay, from an ethereally elegant afternoon tea at the beautiful Japanese-style garden Lounge by Aman to the lovely spa. There’s also enough on-site dining to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters, from Aman’s Italian staple Arva, which offers views of Mt. Fuji and houses a two-story, glass-fronted wine cellar; and Musashi by Aman, a fine dining experience where traditional Edomae-style sushi is served.

Regent Phu Quoc, one of the newest hotels in the tony Regent portfolio, is one of the most self-contained of the group’s properties. Located off the southwest coast of Vietnam and set alongside a UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve in the country’s largest island of Phú Quốc, this all-suites-and-villas resort takes barefoot luxury to an entirely new level. Its thoughtful, carefree, home-awayfrom-home (but better) aesthetic was brought to life by BLINK Design Group, which created a resort experience, highlighted by unobstructed views of sparkling sea from every angle via expansive windows and verandas that invite natural light. Here, there are 302 suites and villas, our favorite type of which features private infinity pools that soar above the sultry skyline. There are some incredible dining options throughout, and an equally impressive spa, all surrounded by vast schools of Koi fish (as well as daily complimentary yoga on the rooftop and indoor and outdoor yoga pavilions or, for a bonus, a personal holistic wellness coach). But it’s the extras here that make this jungle-like resort the one to beat. There’s ‘Bath Hour’ on offer from the privacy of the Oasis bathrooms; access to Serenity, the resort’s personal yacht (as a side note, it is the only resort in the area to offer this kind of upscale amenity); and the totally wild, private dining experience that is Taste Gallery, where the resort’s six restaurants and bars converge to create a totally unique, art-focused, creative, immersive experience that is spearheaded by the property’s head chef, Bruno Anon. Gangnam-style is a thing, and there isn’t one hotel in Seoul, the K-Beauty capital of the world, that embodies this more so than the Signiel Seoul. Located atop the 1,821-foot LOTTE World Tower, the sixth tallest building in the world and Korea’s largest, this stunner can literally be likened to the very height of extreme luxury. The hotel feels different from other luxury properties. While many of America’s wealthiest get away with lowslung baseball caps and artfully disheveled, unbuttoned designer coats, the guests here look like they’d be right at home on a runway (or at least sitting front row). Signiel (a composite of the words “signature” and “LOTTE”) is the group’s most premium offering, clearly, even winning the Grand Prix of the Best Grand Hotel in the World at the 2022 Villegiature Awards. This is obvious in every possible way, from its signatures restaurants, STAY by Michelin three-star chef Yannick Alléno, and 1 Michelin star Korean eatery, Bicena (becoming the only hotel in Korea to have two Michelin starred restaurants at the same time), to its Rolls-Royce house car and upscale sky bar, Bar 81, which, with 80 different brands, hosts the largest champagne collection in South Korea. The hotel also has its very own wine, La Tour D’Arche Signiel Margaux, from Bordeaux, and a collection of 235 rooms and suites, the largest of which, the Royal Suite, at over 3,800 square feet, has its own jacuzzi and secretary room. There’s also a pool, sauna, and fitness center with panoramic sky views, and the Retreat Signiel, a top-notch K-Spa, which has its own tea and oil ateliers. Can you see now why it was named the very best?

Luxury-based hotel group Anantara, responsible for creating high-end luxury hideaways across Asia, has opened one of its latest and greatest efforts in Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas, a secluded oasis located on an untouched island in the middle of Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay. Once a coconut palm plantation, the 27-acre site is situated between a wooded hill and a turquoise bay dotted with jungle-clad limestone islets that dot the horizon. Unfolding over a mile of golden beach, this new luxury resort is the height of tranquility, spaciousness, and luxury, just a 35-minute boat ride from Phuket and 20 minutes from Krabi. From the moment travelers arrive at the resort’s private jetty, they are immersed in the atmosphere of exclusivity and luxury, highlighted by a sprawling green lawn, a shaded swimming pool, and a golden beach. “WHY DO YOU GO ALL THE WAY TO THE CARIBBEAN when Hawaii is so close?” is a question I’ve been asked many times since I began traveling from California to the Caribbean decades ago. While the proximity of Hawaii’s beaches certainly entices, the Caribbean’s soul and flavors seduce me like the irresistible scent of freshly baked pastries wafting from a Parisian boulangerie. And, Saint Barthélemy, the distinctive crown jewel of the Caribbean, tempts like no other island.
Commonly called St. Barths, St. Barth, or St. Barts, the tiny French island is worth the journey, whether it’s your only destination or you are island-hopping. Known for its mesmerizing turquoise and deep indigo waters, white sand beaches, luxurious hotels, world-class villas, gourmet restaurants, and designer shopping, St. Barths also famously draws the world’s most spectacular superyachts each winter to its Gustavia Harbor.
During my recent trip to the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin, I took a breathtaking, 15-minute flight from Princess Juliana Airport on St. Maarten to the chic island for a weekend during the 2024 St. Barths Bucket Regatta, a must for superyacht racing fans.
After originating in Nantucket in 1986, the Bucket debuted at St. Barths in 1995 and has grown into the island’s second most popular week behind its legendary New Year’s Eve festivities. Every March, elite superyacht sailing vessels and their billionaire owners, along with crème de la crème sailors and well-heeled spectators, flock to the 8-square-mile island for an exhilarating three days of racing powered by reliable trade winds and set against the picturesque island backdrop.
Viewers congregate to watch the ballet on water from hillside villas, Fort Karl in Gustavia, coastal roads, and their own personal or chartered yachts. The Bucket participates in Clean Regattas, the world’s leading sustainability certification for water-based events, and donates a portion of the entry fees and proceeds from the sale of the popular Bucket posters to local charities.
This regatta is renowned for its unique tactical challenges. Back for the sixth time was San Francisco native Paul Cayard, a celebrated yachtsman and professional sailor who first participated in the Bucket in 2014. He’s won multiple times as the tactician for the 56-meter Rosehearty, originally commissioned by Rupert Murdoch and now owned by Joey Kaempfer.
“The people who own these boats like to go cruising on them,” Cayard told me. “These are the owners who enjoy the luxury of their boats, and once or twice a year, they get their heart rate up when we bring a competitive team on the boat. Joey gets all excited about the race.”

previous competitor, The Maltese Falcon, the iconic 88-meter sailing yacht commissioned by her first owner Tom Perkins, was one of five non-racing social entries and welcomed special guests onboard.
The presence of massive motor yachts—including Rising Sun, the 138-meter yacht sold by original owner Larry Ellison to David Geffen, and 116-meter Multiverse, anchored in the bay facing Gustavia and nightly dockside fun with a welcome party—Bucket Bar, Bucket Bash with live music and dancing, crew party, awards ceremony, and more combined to make the 30th edition of this regatta truly special. Events such as the owners party were by invitation only, but most activities were open to the public.
It’s no wonder St. Barths’ hotels and restaurants were at capacity, and Cayard is a regular at the event. He sits on the board of AmericaOne Racing, a developmental program focused on supporting young athletes along Olympic and other highperformance pathways. The nonprofit also supports Bay Area Association of Disabled Sailors and Treasure Island Sailing Center. He also serves as as president of International Star Class and consults for Translated, a Rome, Italy-based company presently fielding a team in the Ocean Globe Race, an 8-month adventure around the world for ordinary sailors on normal yachts. Cayard, a two-time Olympian, seven-time world champion, seven-time America’s Cup sailor, and member of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, enjoys St. Barths so much that he has visited without sailing.
“I love the island,” he says. A dual citizen of France whose father is from Paris, the yachtsman reminisced about summers spent with his Parisian cousins at his grandmother’s house in Sainte-Maxime in the south of France from the ages of 10 to 15.
When he’s on St. Barths, he begins each morning with a walk to Shell Beach, one of the more popular beaches, for a 25-minute swim and is reminded that the island is home for 9,000 people.
“I see moms dropping kids off at school,” he says. “Of course, there’s the excesses with the Louis Vuitton® and Prada® shops, but there’s a real, home-grown life to the island. That’s the underlayer of this glamorous, ritzy, billionaire aura. It has a true core, real people doing real things in a very European style. I see that and feel that. Sometimes I hallucinate about living there.”
A certified pilot, Cayard has even done the unimaginable on St. Barths: land an aircraft on the island’s notoriously short runway which is a mere 2,119 feet and ends at St. Jean Beach where sunbathers soak up rays and the aviation action. While pilots need special certification to take off and land on St. Barths, Cayard was allowed because he was accompanied by the instructor who taught him to fly 25 years ago and has the proper credentials.
“I love flying, and that airport is so intriguing and challenging,” says Cayard, who usually doesn’t land on runways under 3,000 feet, but managed three landings on St. Barths.
St. Maarten’s airport (on the Dutch side) accounts for the majority of the approximately 140,000 passengers who arrive by air on St. Barths each year, but there are also nonstop flights from St. Martin (on the French side); San Juan, Puerto Rico; Pointe à Pitre, Guadeloupe; Antigua; Anguilla; and St. Thomas. For travelers who cannot handle the thrill of an aircraft’s sharp descent onto St. Barths runway with the sea so close, the ferry is another option to reach the island.
St. Barths closes for the season at the end of August and reopens in early October. Mark your calendars for the next two Bucket regattas: March 13–16, 2025, and March 12–15, 2026. Or, if you just can’t wait until next year, the St. Barths Gourmet Festival takes place November 5–10, 2024, and is a delicious reason to visit this fall.
The illustrious Eden Rock St. Barths, in the town of St. Jean, celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2023 and continues to draw glitterati from around the world. “THIS IS AFRICA. I’M REALLY HERE.” IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW many times you go on safari, you’ll say it. It happens as you watch the sun begin to descend in orange hues toward the horizon. You’ll mutter it as you feel the lasting warmth of the bush or veld clinging to your khaki clothing. You’ll whisper it as baboons bray, elephants trumpet, a bird trills, and a faraway lion roars as if in homage to the sunset. Enraptured, you skim the grassy veld or scrubby bushland with your eyes, lost in the nature, becoming one with the wild you’ve watched all day on game drives. JUST 20 MINUTES FROM THE BATH SPA RAILWAY STATION, OUR driver turned into the grounds of the secluded Georgian manor house. If it weren’t for the sign, “THE PIG - near Bath,” it could be hard to spot. Early clusters of daffodils stood as testimony to the weather news everyone was talking about—the wettest month on record in the South of England, turning the expansive acres surrounding Hunstrete House to a deep emerald green.
At the hotel’s entry hall, all sizes of Hunter Wellington mud boots are thoughtfully provided for guests’ use. Inside, there’s a warm greeting from reception staff at this mellow, honey-colored stone manor house. Peeking at the billiards room, old dining room, the bar, and several more lounges with crackling log fires, I found them delightfully buzzing with family activity on English Mother’s Day. After collecting the key to room 16, I settle comfortably into an oversized yet cozy first floor guest room with sunflower wallpaper and a freestanding roll top bathtub as well as a big monsoon rainfall shower. Gently pulling back a lacy curtain from the period sash window for a look at the view, I spot signs of spring: brave crocuses popping up in the meadow where a herd of deer browse beyond the period walls of a working kitchen garden.

They work hand in hand on a daily changing menu featuring wild, seasonal produce grown here and supplemented by a community of local purveyors—farmers, fishermen, foragers—all within zero to 25 miles.
In addition to visiting frolicking pigs, I saw chickens and quail, beehives, a mushroom house, poly tunnels, original greenhouses, fruit cages, a smokehouse, and a wood-fired oven. Secluded in the foliage are two renovated potting sheds used as spa treatment rooms where guests choose from a menu of fresh infusions, botanical ingredients, and aromatherapy oils.
Be banned, minimalism! Each of THE PIG locations is rooted in its surrounding countryside and oozes a characterful sense of place in some of the prettiest settings in England. The much-loved interiors are a higgledy-piggledy mash-up of mismatched china, shabby chic vintage furniture, and eclectic pieces that make you want to move in for good. As interior designer Judy Hutson said, “Imagining different characters brings each house alive. We like each of our places to have its own identity, but because they are all related, they have some things in common, too.”
Although it’s fun to debate the personal pros and cons, trying to choose a favorite among THE PIG hotels is like trying to choose a favorite grandchild.
If you go, know this: You cannot go wrong. The surroundings are dreamy, the food is delightful, and the staff are competent and charming. THE PIG shows off the beautiful British countryside at its (unstuffy) best, so simply pick your PIG. For example, in Studland Bay bordering the English Channel, you’ll find unspoiled views of the sandy Dorset coast at THE PIG-on the Beach. Walk to Old Harry Rock on the Jurassic Coast and explore the nearby ruins of 11th century Corfe Castle. In Cornwall, THE PIG-at Harlyn Bay has far-reaching sea views from a 15th century manor house just 10 minutes from the beach in Padstow.
Expanding the litter to 11 properties, three more country houses have been selected as THE PIG’s next siblings. Two are coming in 2024: one in Shakespeare country at Stratford-uponAvon and another in a quintessential Cotswold village. Fascination with this stunning corner of Southeast England has soared lately, due in part to the phenomenon known as “setjetting”—that is, visiting real life set locations of made-for-television series and big screen films. Research from VisitBritain shows that films and TV are powerful motivators for travel, so the destination organization has long been promoting these locations, from Jane Austen to James Bond and Harry Potter to Paddington Bear.
I was fortunate to make three rural getaways to THE PIG: 1) near Bath by the Cotswolds, 2) in the New Forest near Winchester, and 3) near Studland and Lyme Regis in Dorset. From medieval cathedral to windswept coastline, each was convenient for exploring film locations for The Crown, Wonka, Bridgerton, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Ammonite, Broadchurch, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, On Chesil Beach, Nanny McPhee, and Dunkirk, among others. Jane Austen stories filmed in Lyme Regis include Persuasion, Emma, and Mansfield Park. Approaching the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, the celebrated English novelist, interest remains strong into 2025 and beyond.

Brown, Jr., Assistant U.S. Attorney Annemarie Conroy, and District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. A gourmet dinner in the gallery ballroom followed, where Mayor Breed welcomed the crowd.
“The arts are magical. They spark emotion, they spark excitement, and they make us feel something that truly represents joy,” she said. “Tonight, we are here to celebrate 30 years of Smuin and all the work that they have done to bring that joy to us.” Fushille, a founding member of Smuin and its principal dancer for more than 12 years before taking the helm in 2007, was recognized for her incredible 30-year tenure with the company. ON APRIL 19, MERCURY SOUL TRANSFORMED SAN FRANCISCO’S ICONIC Grace Cathedral into a magical evening of luxe DJ beats, classical music, and immersive visuals. Between classical performances, artistic director Mason Bates interspersed ambient house beats by DJ Masonic (Mason Bates himself), DJ Justin Reed (Illmeasures Chicago), and special guest GARZA (aka Rob Garza), plus immersive visuals by Mark Johns and performances by SF Opera Adler Fellows, the SF Conservatory of Music Brass Ensemble, solo violinists Ava Pakiam and Diego de la Cruz Iwadare, and pianist Kristie Janczyk with conductor Daniel Stewart. The sacred music of Arvo Pärt, Francis Poulenc, and William Byrd were performed by brass chorale and organ. Smuin Ballet choreographed the entrancing early minimalism of John Adams; violinist Ava Pakiam brought Jules Massenet’s exquisitely beautiful “Taïs Meditation” to life; and Grace Cathedral’s Christopher Keady performed scintillating organ toccatas on the majestic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ which is one of the largest church organs in the West. SF Opera Adler Fellow Arianna Rodriguez performed an aria from Bellini’s La Sonnambula, and the SF Gay Men’s Chorus filled the cathedral with choral music of the Renaissance.
Attendees explored the beautiful surroundings—the awe-inspiring architecture of Grace Cathedral surreally converted into an otherworldly realm through a lavishly blended tapestry of music, dance, and visual arts—while being transported from classical masterpieces to a club dance party and back again. This was truly one of the most extraordinary musical evenings I have ever seen, despite my concert experience at the best opera houses in the world, such as La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, Paris Opera House Garnier, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro la Fenice in Venice, and the Vienna Opera House.

THE CHICAGO RIVER WAS STILL SPORTING ITS TRADITIONAL green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day when Festival Napa Valley made its debut in the Windy City on Thursday, March 21, 2024, with A Taste of Festival Napa Valley in Chicago. The elegant evening took place at The Row Fulton Market, Related’s newest luxury residential development and was part of the Festival’s Olivia Decker Power of Music series as well as the debut of a new partnership, The Art of Life with Related
Featuring musical performances and a choice selection of Napa Valley wines, the event brought the renowned hospitality of California wine country to a full house gathered in The Row Fulton Market’s Library. The event included a reception featuring wines from Festival partner wineries Darioush, Far Niente, Frank Family Vineyards, JCB, and Raymond Vineyards, and light fare from the appropriately named nearby restaurant, Oakville Grill & Cellar.
The concert featured Broadway singer Christina Maxwell, pianist Rieko Tsuchida, and violinist Sienna Peck. Celebrated Chicago violinist Masha Lakisova opened the concert with an invigorating performance of an excerpt from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess. Christina Maxwell and Rieko Tsuchida—just returned from a tour with Classical Music Collection Japan—then took the stage with Sienna Peck to perform a selection of songs from iconic films, including
“Diamonds are Forever” from the James Bond film of the same name, a stunning rendition of “Shallow” from A Star is Born, and an emotional Joni Mitchell’s famous hit Both Sides Now featured in films like Love, Actually and set to a score of piano and strings.

On March 22, I took the red eye flight back to San Francisco and spent the day visiting the world renowned Art Institute of Chicago. I was impressed with the vast Impressionist collection of paintings by Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Picaso, Matisse, Caillebotte, Seurat, Chagall, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cezanne, Manet, Degas, Sisley, and Gauguin. I felt I was in Musee d’Orsay in Paris! I also took the magnificent architectural tour of Chicago on the river cruise and saw hundreds of amazing buildings along the Chicago River. GORDON GETTY, A LEGEND OF THE ARTS WORLD AND ONE OF Festival Napa Valley’s founding benefactors, was presented with the Angels of the Arts Award in a gala ceremony at the San Francisco War Memorial Building’s magnificent Green Room on March 7, 2024. The elegant evening included intimate musical performances, a gourmet dinner, Napa Valley wines, and tributes from vintners and world-renowned artists. The Angels of the Arts Award is Festival Napa Valley’s highest honor, celebrating outstanding contributions to the arts. “Gordon Getty is a true angel of the arts,” said Festival Napa Valley President and CEO Rick Walker. “His artistry and generosity have made a profound impact on audiences and arts organizations across the globe, and we are proud of our association with him as an artistic partner, supporter, vintner, and most of all, friend. We are honored to celebrate him with the Angels of the Arts Award.”
Guests enjoyed a reception and dinner prepared by culinary stars Sarah and Evan Rich, the duo behind San Francisco’s Michelinstarred Rich Table. The evening featured wines from Alpha Omega, Darioush, HALL, JCB, and PlumpJack, all Festival Napa Valley partner wineries. The evening’s performers included sopranos
Alexandra Armantrading and Lisa Delan, mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, tenor Nathan Granner, baritone Lester Lynch, baritone/ librettist Curt Branom, clarinetist David Barnett, pianist Kevin Korth, and pianist/composer Jake Heggie. Special tributes from Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, composer John Corigliano, mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato, and Francisco J. Núñez and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City were also shared. Mr. Getty received a special gift when Apple’s Vice President of Engineering Payam Mirrashidi announced that Apple experts personally curated a list of their favorite Getty works and recordings to create a Gordon Getty Essentials playlist, available now via the Apple Music and Apple Music Classical apps. The evening was truly a beautiful and intimate celebration as Mr. Getty stood up to sing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “If I Loved You” a cappella at the dinner table in his strong voice and Lisa Delan read her commissioned poem in his honor from the stage. Attendees were given a copy of the poem to take home along with unforgettable memories of the evening’s celebration of the legendary Mr. G., as he is lovingly called.

The San Francisco Symphony premiered his first opera, Plump Jack, in 1984; San Francisco Opera gave the U.S premiere of his opera, Usher House in 2014; and Festival Napa Valley presented the world premiere of his opera reimagined for film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, in 2021.

That evening, the Olivia Decker Power of Music Series presents world-renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and violinist Ray Chen performing on the Festival Napa Valley Stage at Charles Krug followed by a patron dinner at ONEHOPE Winery.
The Arts for All Gala at Nickel & Nickel crowns Opening Weekend on Sunday, July 14.
“The gala is always a highlight of Festival Napa Valley, combining great music, food, wine, and generous philanthropy. On Wednesday, July 17, they commemorate the centenary of American music icon Henry Mancini with a Mancini at 100 tribute, featuring his daughter Monica Mancini and the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, followed by a patron dinner at Freemark Abbey.
Sophia Loren fans won’t want to miss Maria Manetti Celebrates La Dolce Vita!, honoring the legendary actress on Tuesday, July 16. Loren’s son, Carlo Ponti, conducts his dynamic Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra, and his own son, 16-year-old pianist Vittorio Ponti, makes his festival debut. Naturally, the evening concludes with a patron dinner, this one at Jean-Charles Boisset’s fabulous Raymond Vineyards.
Other dinner hosts include Antinori Napa Valley, the Donum Estate, Sterling Vineyards, Charles Krug Winery, and Castello di Amorosa.

YOU LIKELY NOTICED THAT ASTON MARTIN HAS HAD A LONG RUN of cars starting with “DB.” That designation came from David Brown, the owner of the company from 1947. The company’s lineup has included a “DB”-branded car for more than 75 years.
The one-off, so to speak, in the run of numbers was the DB10 which, as it turns out, was made in very limited production (only ten units) for use in the 2014 James Bond film Spectre. That was quite the homage to a fifty-year collaboration between the James Bond films and the storied car manufacturer (the first such alliance being the DB5 in the 1964 film Goldfinger). Not long thereafter, the DB11 was announced, and it was a stunner. Large clamshell hood (all one piece with upper fenders attached, opening forward), as svelte as it was fast. So how to improve on that, which surprisingly has been around for over ten years? Behold the DB12. This newest iteration of the Aston road kings dubbed by them as the “World’s First Super Tourer” is even more sculptural than its
predecessor. It’s a gorgeous machine but, even more surprisingly, it’s quicker, quieter, and even more comfortable than the DB11 that it replaces. It even was named car of the year by a prestigious car magazine, beating out the McLaren Artura and the Bentley Flying Spur Speed.
So, what does it take to create such a winner? Starting with the V8 motor, the DB12 has over 670 horsepower with 590 pound feet of torque, potent enough to motivate this big touring machine (weighing about two tons) from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. The twin-turbo engine is mated to a very slick eight-speed transmission an automatic trans which can be driven in manual mode with the paddle shifters. Thoughtfully, there’s even an exhaust-sound adjustment button and several driving modes GT, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Wet. Needless to say, my normal start-up sequence includes the loud button, choosing the Sport+ mode, selecting the manual transmission and reducing (or completely turning off) the traction-control switch.
As a long-time devotee of the brand, I can say that Astons present several delights, including their sinuous lines and sleek, sumptuous curves. When opening the door, you get to experience the wafting sweet fragrance of premium leather and marvel at the beautiful tooling that presents interesting designs. Sliding into the driver’s seat, you feel coddled, almost like wearing a custom suit that’s well-made and fitted. And when firing up the motor, you can’t wait to drive off, at one with the machine, loving the ergonomics, sound, and speed.
While this two-plus-two (which, as usual, has a small back seat) coupe is heavier than many sports cars, the performance is impressive. With an impressive a top speed just north of 200 miles per hour, what struck me most was the way the car rode so smoothly, especially on uneven surfaces, and then handled through the corners like a slot car. No doubt, the 22-inch wheels help, but the new adaptive dampers and first-of-its-kind Aston e-differential get most of the credit. When added to the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S tires (developed specifically for the DB12) that include what’s become de rigueur noise-cancelling foam inserts inside each tire the DB12’s road-going manners are awesome. Often, power and performance are the enemy of calm and comfort, and vice versa, but this latest Aston does both so well that it truly is a grand tourer.
Another major improvement over the DB11 is that this newer model has its own switchgear, rather than having it come from the MercedesBenz parts bin, as Aston had done for many years. The result is that everything each driver touches is metal or leather-wrapped and feels substantial and luxurious. The new transmission seems slicker and smoother-shifting than the earlier version and the lower rear-end gearing makes for a quicker response time when accelerating. “My” DB12 had the optional Bowers & Wilkins 15-speaker 1,170-watt sound system, which added to the aural delights, especially as the car can be quiet enough to really enjoy the music, be it Billy Joel, Aaron Copland, Robbie Williams, The Fugs, or Blodwyn Pig (now that’s a playlist!)
As a side note, at press time for this story, I also was able to enjoy the drop-top version of this fine machine, the DB12 Volante, but that’s a tale for another time since the information embargo imposed on the Volante extends until after this article goes to press. Stay tuned, though, as it’s a real stunner.
I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you may not agree with my raves about the design of the DB12, but when coupled with exemplary performance, comfort, world-class handling, and more, the DB12 coupe is one of the top grand touring cars made today a Super Tourer indeed.

BY LYDIA GRAHAMFOR CENTURIES, HUMANS HAVE FLOCKED TO MINERAL BATHS and hot springs, sweat lodges and saunas for their healing properties. Long before any scientific data could validate their benefits, human instincts prevailed anecdotally.
Although hot and cold therapies have become mainstream in recent years in America (or at least in the mainstream of the healthconscious crowd), these therapies were widely used thousands of years ago. The word “sauna” is the only English word to have its root in the Finnish language. It is thought the use of saunas in Finland dates back as far 7000 B.C. But the use of heat to heal started even before that in tribal and indigenous cultures around the world, seeking to purify the body through intense perspiration and, in the case of disease, to cure infection. Roman and Greek bathhouses foreshadowed the modern spa and were a cornerstone of civil society. During the Ottoman Empire across the entire Islamic world, the Turkish hammam bathhouses foreshadowed what we know today as hydrotherapy circuits, as they encouraged heated experiences finishing with cool waters. These Turkish bathhouses spread across Europe and influenced what became the Victorian Turkish bathhouse which also incorporated hot-to-cold experiences.
Of course, the Finns (who just had their 6-year winning streak as the happiest country worldwide) are the most famous for their frequent sauna use. It would make sense then to study them. An ongoing prospective study of 2,300 middle-aged male Finns did just that. The Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (KIDH) found sauna usage lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s and all causes of premature death. These findings remained true across age, activity, and lifestyle factors. The study also found the effects were “dose dependent,” in other words, the more saunas, the better. Sound a bit hedonistic? Not really. The data was impressive. Men using the sauna two to three times a week were 27 percent less likely to die from age related cardiovascular (CV) disease and had a 65 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Those using a sauna four to seven times a week were 50 percent less likely to have CV disease. Impressive.
How could the simple, relaxing, and enjoyable act of taking a sauna bath have such a profound impact on health outcomes? Truth is, the effects of a sauna bath may equal the effects of a moderate to high-intensity physical activity.
Why? A number of physiological changes happen in a sauna: skin and core temperature rise to approximately 104 degrees; cardiac output rises 60 to 70 percent; blood flow redirects from the core to the skin; and the extreme heat induces a beneficial stress. Extreme heat has been shown to increase longevity in both flies and worms. A review of evidence by the Mayo Clinic linked sauna use to reduced risk of high blood pressure, CV disease, and neurocognitive and pulmonary disease as well as lessening of symptoms in arthritis, headache, and flu.
What is the best way to safely enjoy a sauna?
Always check with your healthcare practitioner first. Let your body guide you—listen.
If you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated, or lightheaded, STOP. Avoid alcohol.
Limit exposure to 15 to 20 minutes.
Be sure to hydrate before a sauna and drink two to four glasses of water after use. Consider an electrolyte drink. Do not take a sauna if you are ill.
If you are using a red light feature, be mindful to protect your eyes.
While the subject of voluntary exposure to and immersion in cold water continues to be debated scientifically, there is some consensus that it may correlate to better health. Again, we turn to the Finns. A 2004 study cited in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health (yes, there is such a journal) of 49 Finnish swimmers who swam four times a week and 33 non-swimmers found the swimmers reported “a decrease in tension and fatigue and improvement in mood, memory and relief from pain and inflammation.” The study concluded, “Winter swimming improves general well-being.”
For those who are not swimmers, the cold plunge offers a viable alternative. Cold water immersion has been associated with a myriad of benefits: reduction and transformation of brown fat, reduction of insulin resistance and improved insulin sensitivity, reduction in inflammation and improvement in immunity, mental resilience, and improved sleep quality. These benefits happen due to certain physiological responses that occur during a cold plunge, such as cutaneous vasoconstriction and coldinduced vasodilation, shivering thermogenesis (which increases metabolic heat production), non-shivering thermogenesis (which activates brown adipose tissue), and cardiopulmonary responses (cold shock response, increased blood pressure).
The temperature at which benefits occur may differ between the sexes. According to Stacy Sims, Ph.D., exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, the temperature at which women derive benefits from cold plunging is “not as cold for women as it is for men.” While the general recommendation for cold plunges is between 50-and-60 degrees Fahrenheit, “… when women start to shiver or when women start to feel cold (is usually) around 55°F (to) 56°F water.”
Those who do cold water immersion swear by it. And some folks caught on way before cold plunging became a thing. Consider our very own Dolphin Club (aka Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club) and those who swim regularly in the bay at Aquatic Park. Joan Schriger, principal at Parallel Advisors headquarterd in San Francisco and a competitive swimmer, has been swimming in the bay for years. She says, “It is hugely invigorating to go for a swim in the San Francisco Bay; you feel like a thousand bucks. I backed into it slowly. First you build tolerance, then it becomes like an addiction. In my early days, we would go for a swim and then jump into our cars and crank up the heat intuitively.”
Those who plunge frequently in cold water mention anecdotally how it is a mood enhancer and staves off depression. They rave over its many positive physiological benefits. One of the earliest advocates of cold therapy was Wim Hof. In 2011, a study by Radboud University showed that “by using his method, Wim was voluntarily able to influence his autonomic nervous system—something which until then was thought virtually impossible.” Today, he teaches the Wim Hof Method® which consists of three pillars: breathing, cold therapy, and commitment.
Still, there remains a need for large, controlled studies on cold immersion, as most studies have been done in small groups, often on a single gender, and have confounding factors such as healthy user-bias and self-reporting.
If cold plunges or swimming in the bay is not your style, then there are cold water baths or showers—available to almost everyone.
If you decide to cold plunge, here are some tips:
Always check with your health practitioner first.
Start with short stints; increase slowly over time: start with one or two minutes.
Work up to three to five minutes.
Let your body guide you—listen.
If you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated, or lightheaded, STOP. Protect your skin if you do ice baths.
Always end on cold to get the benefit of thermogenesis.
Take breaks between days.
Hydrotherapy circuits offer an opportunity to alternate between hot and cold exposures to promote wellness. Increasingly, spas are offering hydrotherapy circuits, but you can accomplish a lot just with your own shower.
“Both heat and cold are healthy stressors for the body,” says Dr. Marcus Coplin, naturopathic medical director and medical director of The Springs Resort in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. “By stimulating the body to regulate against the temperature shift, a variety of physical and biochemical changes occur. As a regular part of a health and wellness practice, contrast bathing is a rational approach to keeping our bodies well-tuned and adaptable to life’s stressors.”

For those living in the Bay Area who want to indulge a little closer to home, if you are visiting the Carmel area anytime soon, reserve and buy a day pass at the Refuge in Carmel , California. Enjoy the Refuge Thermal Cycle for an invigorating yet relaxing experience. Then top it off with a Swedish or deep tissue massage. Do not plan on chatting with friends or scrolling on your devices while there; they have a silence policy which is a huge part of its draw and a real opportunity to unplug.
To make heat and cold therapies part of your weekly wellness regimen, you cannot beat the convenience of home access. Many companies sell these products. Do your homework.

For saunas, there are so many options available on the market today. Do your research to find the perfect fit for your needs. Two considerations most people do not think about are EMF exposure and whether the wood has been sprayed coming into the U.S. Ask about it. Brands frequently use the terms “low EMF,” “ultra-low EMF,” or “near-zero EMF.” It is worth researching before you buy.

THERE MAY BE A KERNEL OF TRUTH IN THE OLD WIVES’ TALE THAT those married in June are blessed with a lifetime of prosperity and happiness. Even the word “June” is derived from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, and the word “honeymoon” refers to the first full moon in June following the summer solstice. With so many friends born in March, it’s nearly impossible to keep track of all the birthday festivities. From lunches, dinners, and get-togethers, March was busy. I mean, I’m no reproductive expert, but I can count to nine from June!
This spring welcomed some fabulous celebrations, and it all began with the planning of my annual bash. Boy, it was the event of the season!
For the last couple decades, I have hosted my annual birthday bash at my home away from home, San Francisco’s luxury retailer Neiman Marcus. I was driven to top the previous year, so this latest soiree was no exception. This year’s theme, “Aubrey’s Elysian Dream Birthday Luncheon,” was notably inspired by ancient Greek poet Homer’s writings of the Elysian Fields, a heavenly place of the gods in his epic poem The Odyssey. Delivering a spectacular Greek-themed event worthy of the 12 Olympian gods of ancient Greek mythology and most worthy of guests’ collective imagination entailed transforming Neiman Marcus’ exclusively posh Penthouse on Five into an enchanting and magical Grecian paradise and fictional land of pure escapism.
In true Grecian elegance, guests made their fashionable entrance into the “Poseidon Lounge & Caviar Bar” for an hour-long pre-lunch cocktail reception where they were greeted to scrumptious lamb lollipops, mini spanakopita, and zucchini cakes. And to add to the afternoon’s opulence, a generous caviar bar tantalized guests, featuring exquisite osetra from my friend, the cowgirl of caviar, Texas-born Petra

Higby (CEO and co-founder of The Caviar Co.), and served from a giant seashell flanked with golden seahorses (adorned with flowers) and octopus statuary and with a grand silver fan coral honoring the god of the sea as a backdrop.
When lunch was announced, guests made their way through one of two dramatic 10-foot, white marble-like, 4-pillar colonnade arches with a capstone whimsically decorated with a grotesque (i.e., face) of the Greek god of wine, Bacchus, overlooking the fête, cascading fruit-bearing grapevines spiraling from the columns, and two grand, 8-foot-tall weeping wisteria trees. A backdrop of a 16-foot Greek amphitheater, a 6-foot, working, flowering water fountain, and a 6-foot pomegranate tree with a statue of the goddess Persephone honored springtime.
Guests sat down to lavishly adorned tables under an abundant canopy of delphinium and viburnum, white ranunculus, garden roses, and lisianthus (to match the ornate floral-patterned, imported linen tablecloths), designed by SF’s renowned Bella Fiora Floral Design. Set on the tables awaiting guests to start the feast were elegant gold vine and silver dip caddies filled with hummus, tzatziki, and melitzanosalata. Mezze platters of stuffed grape leaves (dolma I had flown in from Greece for the occasion), soutzoukakia (spiced meatballs with green olives), and aginares (artichokes with roasted red pepper sauce) were served on gold Greek key patterned, Versace-style, porcelain china platters. The same porcelain was used throughout the meal, from salad to cake: creamers and sugar pots, teapots, cups and saucers, and other service ware, purchased for the fanciful afternoon.
Neiman Marcus’ Rotunda Restaurant General Manager Katrina Parlato oversaw the event’s catering operations, and executive chef Erik Harrelson curated the delicious, 4-course meal, starting with horiatiki salad (cucumber, tomato, kalamata olives, feta, caper berries, and lemonoregano vinaigrette). Six kilos of the finest HORECA by Iliada Kalamata olives were flown in from Greece for the chef to create his take on this classic Greek salad. Comforting avgolemeno (egg-lemon soup with chicken and rice) followed, and chicken souvlaki with lemon potatoes ended the scrumptious meal.
During the first and last courses, guests were surprised and enchanted by a beautifully exotic sword dance performance by acclaimed belly dancer Shabnam (of Shabnam Dance Company) who completely mesmerized everyone.
San Francisco’s iconic North Beach pâtisserie, Victoria Pastry Company (established in 1914 and a childhood favorite of mine), created this year’s cake: three layers of citron génoise, lemon curd, and raspberry mascarpone cream iced with vanilla Italian meringue buttercream and enrobed in marzipan—a custom flavor that I had originally developed with Victoria’s Pastry for my partner and the afternoon’s host, Dr. Edward Winger, on his birthday. (It’s become Ed’s annual favorite and a favorite among friends, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, since I served it at her birthday party which Ed and I had hosted back in August 2022, also in Neiman’s Penthouse on Five.)
Party revelers continued late through the afternoon, sipping on French Henriot Champagne, a full bar, and specially tailored, Greekinspired libations, including themed cocktails such as “Ambrosia” (an alluring and intoxicating concoction of rum, Pama pomegranate liqueur, orange and pineapple juices, and strawberry and banana purées), the “nectar of the gods” served from Greco-Roman style rock-cut crystal urns and the “Persephone” (a delightful blend of vodka, Pama pomegranate liqueur, Cointreau® , pomegranate juice, sour, club soda, and

orange bitters), named for the goddess of the underworld and bringer of spring, served in a whimsical pomegranate-shaped cocktail glass I had imported just for this cocktail.
An ever-so-clever Greek take on the espresso martini, the “Kafé Greco” (vanilla vodka, Kahlúa coffee liquor, ouzo, and Greek coffee, shaken ice cold to a creamy froth), was served up. To amuse guests, attendants made Greek coffee sweetened to taste and brewed over hot sand on a genuine hovoli from Greece, a copper and brass heating vessel that cooks the coffee (or kafé) in a copper ibrik pot. The idea was inspired by the grand hovoli at Kokkari Estiatorio (another home away from home of ours), displayed near the kitchen. And if that weren’t enough, to add to the afternoon’s decadence, a self-service soft serve frozen Greek yogurt machine station with an assortment of toppings to play on guests’ childhood nostalgia was offered in the lounge.
“This magical afternoon is about you—a moment to escape and spread the love around. I love each of you more than I can express,” I said in my address to our guests. That love reverberated throughout the afternoon. Longtime friend and partygoer, former Mayor Willie Brown, Jr., said of these events, “I don’t know how many of you are repeat invitees, but it is something to look forward to because you know every year Aubrey is going to do something incredibly unique, unbelievable, as is the occasion.” Guests couldn’t have agreed more.
What am I planning for 2025 to top this, you ask? The hint … space and Planet X. But that’s just between you and me!

Spring kicked off a month-long celebration of our beloved former mayor of San Francisco, friend to many of us, and now nonagenarian, Willie L. Brown, Jr., as he marked his 90th orbit around the sun.
Official festivities began on Brown’s birthday, March 20, with an afternoon of honoring him at San Francisco’s City Hall where San Francisco Mayor London Breed hosted an afternoon and where people who worked with Willie during his years in service could get together and reminisce. Later that evening, his longtime friends and colleagues, Steven Kay and Victor Makras along with his wife, Farah Makras, were delighted to host an exclusive evening with 85 of his closest friends in the posh banquet room at the iconic Harris’ Steakhouse for an intimate dinner of filet mignon and baked potato, followed by birthday cake and root beer floats (WB’s favorite!).
He later confessed to me that he prefers pie over cake—sweet potato being his absolute favorite—but I already knew that and am sure to bake one for him every year he and Sonya come to our home for Thanksgiving. Though by day a real estate mogul, Victor made the perfection of WB’s birthday his passion project and took upon the task to personally select every aspect. No detail was overlooked to make his friend’s birthday extra fabulous. From the beautiful tablecloths, napkins, and stunning floral arrangements to the printed menus and the chic, custom-engraved, crystal keepsake trinket boxes that guests took home to commemorate the auspicious occasion, every detail was perfect. Farah and I proudly joked that Victor may have a new calling in event planning: it was truly beautiful in hues of red, the birthday boy’s favorite color. Not only speaking for myself and Ed, but I’m also sure I can speak for all of us guests that everyone in the room felt special and cared for. I’ve always believed that love is in the details, and Victor Makras proved this sentiment that evening!
The room was filled with love and tears of adoration for the beloved former mayor, and it was a who’s who of generational San Francisco. Illustrious guests included Willie Brown’s longtime partner, socialite Sonya Molodetskaya; Governor of California Gavin Newsom; California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis; San Francisco Mayor London Breed; former SF Mayor Art Agnos and his wife, Sherry; event designer Riccardo Benavides; Carolyn Chang; David and Mary Beth Shimmon; Attorney General of California Rob Bonta; former manager of the (San Francisco) 49ers, Carmen Policy and his wife, Gail Policy; SF Giants CEO Larry Baer and his wife, Pam Baer, who presented a custom baseball jersey to the joyful man of the hour that read “BROWN” with the number 90 on the back.
On Thursday, March 28, the parties honoring “da mayor” (a term of endearment dating to his time in office) continued with an exclusive luncheon at SF’s famous Sam’s Grill. The afternoon’s hosts, Jo Schuman Silver of SF’s famed and now defuncted variety show Beach Blanket Babylon, and lavish event designer extraordinaire Stanlee Gatti (whom I’ve often been compared to) brought a bit of tongue-in-cheek whimsy to set the ambiance. As guests pulled up to Sam’s Grill, they were greeted by valets wearing yellow fedora hats that read “Here’s to Willie!” on the hatband (hats were also given to guests to keep) to honor Willie’s love for the fedora, his iconic accessory. He arrived in a cashmere fedora in navy blue.
As they made their way up the yellow carpet, guests were greeted by a larger-than-life photo op cardboard cutout of Willie dressed as a king and wearing a white ermine cape and crown. They sat at one long table adorned with yellow sunflowers. Guests were amused by a performance by Beach Blanket.
The afternoon’s guests included Governor of California Gavin Newsom, Paul and Nancy Pelosi, SF Mayor London Breed, and California Academy of Sciences trustee and philanthropist Penny Coulter (wife of billionaire businessman James Coulter), just to name a few.
On Saturday afternoon, Willie and I met for lunch at Neiman Marcus’ Rotunda restaurant (a Saturday tradition) to continue the birthday celebration with cheeseburgers and french fries and a huge strawberry ice cream sundae with a candle in it for Willie! We needed the sustenance for the evening’s big event just hours away.
Willie Brown’s birthday gala was a San Francisco affair to be remembered. The elegant, sold-out ($1,000+ per plate), black tie dinner at the swanky Bimbo’s 365 Club benefited the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Institute on Politics and Public Service. His youngest daughter, Sydney Brown, (who takes after her pops in both charm and a love of politics and service to her community) took to the stage in a stunning, metallic, art deco, embellished, black mermaid gown and led the room in a sweet rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” as the birthday cake was presented. She introduced her father to the stage.
The room gleamed with love and joy, and it seemed as if everyone the former mayor ever met were there. To WB’s surprise, 39 members of Willie’s family flew in from around California and the country to join in celebrating the nonagenarian, including his brother, James L. Walton, Tacoma, Washington’s first African American city manager, who flew down from Washington to join the merriment. Willie’s guests sipped on festive libations and dined on delicious braised short ribs and ice
cream sundaes catered by McCalls before they danced the night away to classic, old-school R&B, disco, and pop covers by the stylings of Grammy Award®-winner, singer, and songwriter Narada Michael Walden. And y’all should’ve seen me spinning around like a banshee to the late Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” to everyone’s surprise—sans the fringed dress, of course!

Valley, Sonoma County, I am always looking to support local wineries when dining out. Whether in Silicon Valley or Napa Valley, I do my best to select unique, exceptional wines to support my wine community. When I travel abroad, it’s all about the local fare. When in Italy, I look for the best Barolo; in Spain, a Rioja Gran Reserva; and when in France—where do I start?—a Blanc de Blanc Champagne or a hidden gem of a Bordeaux. So, when dining locally, I drink locally.
In 2016, Amulet acquired an estate winery and vineyards at the base of Napa Valley’s renowned Howell Mountain. CROSS-BORDER WEALTH PLANNING MAY BE MORE COMPLICATED for families who reside and work in different countries. If you are not a citizen or resident of the U.S., you may have to pay U.S. wealth transfer taxes (federal gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer taxes) when you transfer assets to U.S. recipients, such as your children or grandchildren. The following techniques may help reduce the tax burden.
Non-U.S. persons may not be subject to U.S. estate tax, but their children in the U.S. likely will be.
You are not liable for U.S. estate taxes if you are not a U.S. person, meaning you do not have citizenship or residency in the U.S., unless you transfer assets that are considered to be located in the U.S.
But even if your assets are not subject to U.S. estate tax, you may still need to plan for them since these taxes could impact your U.S.based beneficiaries in the future. If you transfer assets directly to your children in the U.S., those assets become part of their taxable estate for U.S. estate tax purposes. You are effectively bringing those assets into the U.S. estate tax system, and currently a 40 percent estate tax will be imposed on any amount in your children’s estate that exceeds the U.S. federal estate tax exemption. Some states impose additional state-level estate tax, so the impact could be even greater.
In 2024, the federal estate tax exemption is capped at $13.61 million per person, so you can pass up to that amount to your heirs without paying any federal estate tax. This tax-free exemption amount is scheduled to be reduced significantly in 2026, when it reverts to the previous Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) level. Unless there is new tax legislation, the inflation-adjusted estate tax exemption is anticipated to land at around $7 million, effective January 1, 2026. The current top 40 percent rate for the gift and estate tax is also scheduled to rise to 45 percent in 2026.
One of the best ways to avoid future U.S. estate taxes for any U.S.based children and grandchildren is to leave the assets in a trust instead of transferring the assets to them directly. Children and grandchildren in the U.S. will be subject to U.S. estate tax on their worldwide assets, so they are not in the same position as you to protect your assets from future U.S. estate taxes. By creating a trust, you can keep assets out of their estates and avoid future estate taxes for as long as the assets are held in trust for their benefit.
A trust may complement your will in your home country and potentially serve as your main vehicle of wealth transfer. You can
design the terms that define how and when your beneficiaries gain access to the trust assets. If your trust is revocable, you retain control over the trust while you are living, and you can change or revoke it at any time. The main condition is that any U.S. beneficiaries must have limited access or control over the trust property to avoid it being subject to the U.S. estate tax when the beneficiary passes away.
A strategy to consider if you want to make immediate gifts to U.S.-based family members is to utilize a long-term, irrevocable “dynasty” trust. If funded with intangible personal property such as mutual funds, stocks, or bonds, no gift tax would be imposed when the trust is created. The trust interests created for the family members would not be subject to taxation in their estates. In addition, as successive family generations enjoy the benefits of the trust, trust assets would not be subject to the generationskipping transfer tax.
A “foreign grantor trust” is a foreign trust for U.S. income tax purposes and is only subject to U.S. income tax on certain defined categories of U.S. source income, such as dividends from U.S. stock or interest. Capital gains are generally exempt from U.S. taxation if you are a non-U.S. person. With a “grantor trust,” you, not the trust, own all income and any non-exempt gains produced by the trust. You are responsible for any U.S. income tax reporting or payment on any U.S. source income. A properly structured trust likely will not produce any U.S. income tax, except for U.S. withholding on any U.S. source income. If the trust will have U.S. beneficiaries upon your death, it may be designed to become a U.S. taxpayer and will report and pay income tax just like your beneficiaries would have to do if you had instead left the assets directly to them. It offers the same estate tax benefits as a non-grantor trust.
One of the most common challenges is transferring U.S. real estate, which is subject to both U.S. income tax and to federal estate and gift taxes. Noncitizens may often eliminate estate tax exposure by setting up a trust or non-U.S. holding company to buy the property and name family members as beneficiaries.
Several factors come into play, such as if and how long you plan to live in the U.S. and if any U.S. children will use the U.S. property. The longer you own the property and the longer the property will be held by U.S. persons weigh in favor of funding a U.S. trust to purchase the U.S. real estate. This way, there should never be a U.S. gift or estate tax, and the capital gains rules apply only when the property is sold.
One option is the use of “directed trusts” which permit separation of the responsibility for the management of some or all the assets from the administrative responsibilities of the trustee. This may be important to families who have a mixture of complicated assets, such as real estate, a family business, or a range of investment managers.
