Featured in Architectural Digest, this world-class residence showcases panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, the skyline of San Francisco and Sausalito. This magnificent masterpiece in a dramatic setting on the most prestigious location is comprised of a ±8,131 sq .ft. home on a ±0.67 acre lot, featuring 4 bedrooms and 5.5 baths. This architectural work of art was designed by architect Charles Gwathmey, with spectacular outlooks from every corner of the expansive 4-level floor plan. The primarily vertical organization of this home takes advantage of its sloped site on the southern coast of Belvedere Island. The uppermost level contains a 3-car garage with glass doors, an elevator which descends to a courtyard, a detached one bedroom, one bath guesthouse and a spacious wine cellar. The remaining levels of the main house are situated between two large retaining walls, which follow the natural contours of the site and splay outwards towards the Bay. The house’s compact organization within the precinct formed by the retaining walls ensures privacy. An interior circular stair winds around an elevator and forms the cylindrical focal point of the house’s massing. A barrel-vaulted ceiling articulates the living and dining room at the entry level of the main house, and a large deck projects towards the Bay to extend the space into the landscape. 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, a study and a two-story entertainment room occupy the intermediate floors, while a media room, a beautiful wet bar, a full bath with steam shower and sauna on the lowest level open onto a spacious outdoor terrace with a pool, whose “infinity edge” of water establishes a poetic connection to the Bay. The interior floors are limestone and wide plank Bubinga wood and cabinets are lightly stained maple. The exterior is clad in gray stained cedar, with a curved standing seam zinc roof. All exterior windows, doors and decks are teak, all terraces are beige/gray flamed limestone pavers and the retaining walls are painted warm white stucco. This is one of the very rare large size newer contemporary homes on Belvedere Island on south and west facing waterfront.

NEW YEAR, NEW HOME STYLE TRENDS

Thoughts of trends from Bay Area’s top luxury home agents

AT THE START OF EACH YEAR, WE FEATURE OUR HOME design trends cover article as we step into a new year and explore new looks for our homes. Our home is our most important sanctuary and often our biggest investment, too. The year 2025 comes with new trends in color, architectural styles, interior décor, and other design aspects to embrace. We have asked top luxury home agents in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Napa Valley, and East Bay to share their thoughts of new design trends in this article. Examples of the homes they are selling are pictured in this article, following my observation of design trends and pictures of three newly built luxury homes I am selling in Belvedere-Tiburon areas.

THE COLORS

The Pantone Color Institute™ is recognized around the world as a leading source of color information through seasonal trend forecasts, custom color development, and palette recommendations to leverage the power, psychology, and emotion of color in their design strategies. More than 10 million designers and producers around the world rely

on Pantone products and services to help define, communicate, and control color from inspiration to realization. Each year, Pantone selects a color that captures the global zeitgeist. Pantone has announced its 2025 color of the year to be Mocha Mousse (pantone.com/color-of-theyear/2025). A warming brown hue imbued with richness, Pantone 171230 Mocha Mousse nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.

Several year-end design magazine articles define a warm taupe (similar to Mocha Mousse) as the color of the year, too. This rich, versatile shade has captured the attention of trend forecasters and industry leaders alike for its unparalleled ability to bridge contemporary elegance with timeless coziness. Veranda Magazine states, “Warm taupe exudes a quiet sophistication, offering a perfect foundation for creating spaces that feel both grounded and inspired. With its medium light reflective value, this shade reflects a balanced amount of light, making it ideal for a variety of lighting conditions. Light reflective value is a fascinating concept in design; it’s a fun and intriguing way to understand how colors interact with light and shape the mood of a space.”

THE STYLES

Residential architectural styles have distinctively changed over the years. In San Francisco, we have massive numbers of Victorian and Edwardian style homes built from the turn of the 20th century to the 1920s. Those were followed by the elegant Mediterranean style villas and imitation French châteaux trending in the 1920s and 1930s, simple, basic wartime housing in 1940s, and the mid-century modern style in 1950s and 1960s. Italian villa style homes with stucco walls and red tile roofs became popular in the 1970s through the 1990s, followed by contemporary style homes in the early 2000s and continuing now.

In recent years, open floorplans with living-dining room combinations opening into the kitchen, tall ceilings, wall-towall windows, light and airy interiors with wood and glass, and rectangular, boxy exterior designs have been very popular. Contemporary white and gray furniture with artwork, decorative pillows, rich textures, and a touch of color from shawls on beds and sofas have been popular in most high-end homes and enhance the more elevated beauty while keeping a relaxed and uncluttered look.

I have been staging homes for my sellers since 1998. I have followed this trendy aesthetic with some touches of colors here and there. (See my listings at 26Peninsula.com and 465BelvedereAve.com.)

In the last half-century, the kitchen became the focal point of the home, a place where family and friends gather, unlike the 1920s and 1930s when luxury homes were built for families with chefs who did the cooking and kitchens were tucked away in the back of the house. Another modern development was the media room where families watched television together after TVs became widely available in every household. An in-house office and a gym with sauna and steam room also became luxury home amenities, plus exterior amenities such as tennis courts, golf putting greens, pools and cabañas, and outdoor entertainment spaces with wet bar, kitchen, and pizza oven. (See the poolside kitchen and bar with pizza oven at SpringMountainEstateNapaValley.com) Also popular are wall-to-wall sliding doors that disappear into the wall pockets and create a wideopen, indoor-outdoor lifestyle. (See 2215VistazoEast.com designed by Sausalito-based architect Scott Couture.)

THE DÉCOR

The most popular home décor trend last 10-plus years has been the “quiet luxury trend” with neutral white and light gray colors and rooms with minimal decoration. This look has been shown on almost all staged homes and at design stores. However, I am tired of this aesthetic which many call the “white shoebox” look, and I know many designers are ready to depart from the monotone color scheme and see it evolve into something more stylish and colorful. Especially, the wives of high-end home buyers want more color and richness in design. They are over entire homes drenched in gray-on-gray and white-on-white interpretations of quiet luxury. They want more accents and contrast and stronger visual impact, but are not ready for overcrowding rooms with furniture and antiques yet.

I also added more color and uniqueness to my recent staging. The light and airy look—such as glass dining tables—is still popular, but the glass-and-chrome aesthetic is too cold-looking now. Glass with richer looking brass is more popular now, and wood is back—but not dark wood yet. Light, wide plank French oak flooring and light, neutral wood cabinets and consoles are popular and have replaced monotone stone tile floors. Social media trends and mass-produced furniture are fading away. More unique and enduring luxury furniture, crafted with high quality materials and artistic designs, that may be an investment and collector’s items and last for decades are back. The color palettes that will last the test of time are calming colors, neutrals, rich jewel tones, natural greens and blues, and earthy browns such as Pantone’s Mocha Mousse.

I don’t think most of the population is ready for antiques yet, contrary to the predictions of several design magazines and designers. (Many decorations in recent issues of Architectural Digest are full of antiques.) Having formerly owned two 17th century French châteaux, I was an antique lover for many years, but I sold the châteaux in 2012 and changed the décor of my other homes, including a classic London condo, to contemporary styles. I liked that interior design aesthetic ever since I redecorated and removed my antiques. My London condo pictures are on LuxuryRentalsLondon.com.

JOEL GOODRICH

MODERN MINIMALISM HAS DOMINATED HOME DESIGN for two decades with sleek lines and monochromatic palettes. However, classic architecture, with its timeless charm and craftsmanship, remains highly appealing. Styles like Colonial, Victorian, and Georgian offer history and character through features like arched doorways, wainscoting, and coffered ceilings. We are seeing buyers increasingly value unique, personal homes over cookie-cutter trends, blending Old World charm with modern amenities. This reflects a desire for spaces with stories and soul, as classic designs provide warmth, depth, and enduring beauty. While trends fade, the love for classic architecture proves true style never goes out of fashion.

For example, see one of my recent sales at the iconic 1001 California Building, dubbed “Paris meets Park Avenue” on Nob Hill. Step into a world of timeless glamour in a spectacular San Francisco residence situated in one of the city’s most legendary Beaux-Arts style buildings. This super-elegant, full-floor residence enjoys stunning views of the world renowned, classic Fairmont Hotel, Mark Hopkins Hotels, the Pacific Union Club, Huntington Park, and Grace Cathedral, with the shimmering waters of the bay and glittering towers of the Financial District and Bay Bridge as a magical backdrop.

The grand scale of the interiors and extraordinary architectural detailing, as well as the irreplaceable design and finishes, are reminiscent of a grand Park Avenue co-op in Manhattan or a historic hôtel particulier in Paris. Starting with the dramatically opulent circular entrance foyer, the unparalleled nature of the public entertaining rooms has been extensively captured in a variety of design and lifestyle publications, including the ultimate Architectural Digest feature, while the luxuriously outfitted private areas create a serene retreat. MICHAEL DREYFUS

ABOUT MICHAEL DREYFUS

THE COVID-19 TRENDS OF BUYERS WANTING LARGER, move-in ready homes with amenities such as pools and lush gardens continued in 2024 and into 2025. Buyers also continue to seek modern, open floorplan styles over traditionally styled homes. Homes needing work languished on the market as buyers feared the high cost of construction and supply chain issues. As listing agents, we are making more pre-sale improvements to homes to try to enhance their chances of selling. Prices in Silicon Valley and the Peninsula held steady despite rising rates, as inventory remained scarce, and actual sales remained low. Silicon Valley’s growing population and high-tech industry buyers are in need of more new housing construction. We look forward to easier development approvals and building permits process as well as lower construction costs in 2025.

Michael Dreyfus has had 30 years of repeated success in residential real estate. He currently ranks as one of the leading sales agents in the Silicon Valley/Peninsula area and has regular appearances on the Wall Street Journal/Real Trend’s list of America’s top 250 agents. He is a co-owner and the top sales agent for Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty with over 450 agents in 20 offices across the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. His recent sales included some of the highest sales recorded in Palo Alto, Woodside, Portola Valley, and Atherton. In addition, he has represented sellers and buyers in high-end transactions throughout California, most recently representing ranches and vineyards in Northern California and an estate in Montecito/Santa Barbara area. Dreyfus is considered a thought leader in residential real estate and is often interviewed in local, regional and national press for his opinion on the residential market. Michael is a licensed real estate broker as well as an attorney-at-law.

Trendy New Homes for The New Year

What attracts Buyers to Napa is a penchant for wine.  To live among the vines and the large open vistas a vineyard view offers distinguishes Napa from other bucolic locations in California.  Optimized private views, from the valley floor or our beautiful rolling hills are all that some buyers require while others want to take the next step.  Owning a small, sustainable, turnkey vineyard where one can explore a new, more intimate relationship with their land and perhaps create their own wine label is also a popular choice and can represent the ultimate expression of what it means to move to wine country.  Whether you produce your own wines or simply collect from the hundreds of award-winning vintners in the area, most Buyers will also seek a home with a substantial wine cellar or entertainment cave.

Luxurious wine country vineyard estates are timeless, no matter the design trend. The estate is a singular environmental haven employing the most technologically advanced methods of land management. HERMAN CHAN

MILLENIAL “GRIEGE” IS OVER. THE COLOR PALETTE (or lack thereof) that once seemed sleek and modern now appears cold and sterile. My clients grew tired of the “white shoebox” aesthetic. Expect to see more tinges of neutral earth tones like taupe showcased in homes. People want warmth and coziness with more colors. Arches are making a comeback. That quintessential 1990’s semi-circle has been popping up in graphic design, and it was just a matter of time before it returned to architecture. Keep your eyes out for arched windows and hallways. Again, it’s a return to a softer aesthetic. Even decorations are more textured now, like fuzzy furniture, tactile decorative pillows, shawls on beds and sofas, and wallpaper.

ABOUT HERMAN CHAN

After brokering over half a billion dollars’ worth of property, it is no secret that Herman Chan is a leading expert in all things luxury. The Bold Symphony of Tequila Corrido

A toast to tradition and innovation

AS A WINE COUNTRY AMBASSADOR, I’M NOT ALWAYS drinking wine. My second go-to beverage of choice is tequila. In a world that offers so many different variations of this spirit, my goal is to seek out true tequila brands crafted in the most authentic way. One such brand that has captured my attention is Tequila Corrido, known for its commitment to excellence and the artistry behind each bottle.

Tequila Corrido is not just a brand; it’s a narrative that celebrates the rich traditions of tequila making and the stories behind each expression. The name “Corrido,” translating to “ballad” in Spanish, pays homage to the historical tales of rebellion and freedom that flow through the heart of Mexico. The brand prides itself on crafting ultra-premium, additive-free tequilas that uphold the highest standards of quality.

Tequila Corrido offers a diverse lineup of expressions that cater to various palates, each meticulously crafted under the expert guidance of master distiller Ana María Romero. The brand’s offerings include Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, and the newly launched Blanco Overproof, each with its own unique character and depth.

The Blanco is the foundation of Tequila Corrido’s offerings. The Blanco expression is unaged and unadulterated, capturing

the raw spirit of the blue Weber agave sourced from the highlands of Jalisco. It boasts a vibrant sweetness, harmonized with subtle notes of pepper and earthy undertones, creating a refreshing and complex profile that serves as a perfect base for cocktails or as a delightful sipper on its own.

Then there’s the Blanco Overproof, the newest addition to the lineup. This high-proof version of the Blanco is crafted for those who appreciate bold flavors. Bottled at 50% alcohol, the Blanco Overproof offers an intensified experience that brings forward enticing aromas of vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and fruit intertwined with the essence of cooked agave. The vibrant citrus notes and delicate spices culminate in a minty finish, making it an excellent choice for adventurous cocktail creations.

The Reposado, my best friend Laura’s favorite, is aged for six months in hand-selected symphony oak barrels. The Reposado’s expression embodies a beautiful balance of flavors. It presents a delightful trail of vanilla, caramel, and coconut, complemented by fruity notes of pineapple, cherry, and apple. The robust heartiness of cooked agave pairs seamlessly with the warm spices of black pepper and cinnamon, resulting in a slightly sweet yet luxurious finish. This tequila is perfect for sipping slowly and savoring its complex layers.

Then there’s my personal favorite, especially for those who appreciate the art of patience: the Añejo expression is a masterclass in complexity. Aged for a minimum of one year, it showcases a rich amber hue that hints at the depth within. Layers of dark chocolate and roasted coffee emerge alongside fruity and herbal notes, creating a luxurious experience that invites contemplation and enjoyment. It’s the ideal choice for a sophisticated evening or as a centerpiece for a special occasion.

What sets Tequila Corrido apart from other brands is its unwavering commitment to traditional methods while embracing innovation. Each batch undergoes an artisanal aging process, nurtured in a careful selection of barrels that impart unique characteristics to the final spirit. From American and Hungarian oak to Missouri oak and Mexican Merlot wine barrels, the symphony of flavors is crafted with meticulous care.

Tequila Corrido’s dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed. The brand won three medals at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition—two gold and one silver— and was named a “2021 Brand of Promise” by Tequila Aficionado

These accolades underscore its reputation for excellence in the world of spirits.

Tequila Corrido isn’t just about the liquid in the bottle; it’s about fostering a community of enthusiasts who appreciate quality and craftsmanship. The brand’s mission is to enhance one’s liquor-ish experience, ensuring that every interaction with Tequila Corrido is an invitation to celebrate life’s moments, big and small.

Having tasted all of Tequila Corrido’s expressions, I can confidently say this tequila lineup is a delightful journey through the heart of Mexico, celebrating tradition while introducing bold flavors. Whether you enjoy the Blanco neat, savor the Reposado with friends, indulge in the Añejo during a special gathering, or experiment with the Blanco Overproof in cocktails, Tequila Corrido brings an experience that is both rich and memorable.

In a world filled with options, let Tequila Corrido be a choice that leads you to explore the captivating stories behind each sip. Raise your glass and indulge in the vibrant world of Tequila Corrido—where every sip tells a story.

A Culinary Odyssey at Etéreo: Discovering the Exquisite Flavors of Auberge’s Sanctuary in the Riviera Maya

AS THE SUN BEGAN TO DIP BELOW THE HORIZON, CASTING A golden hue across the Caribbean Sea, I found myself enveloped in the ethereal beauty of Etéreo, an Auberge Resorts Collection property. This luxurious haven, nestled within the lush mangroves of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, served as the perfect backdrop for a much-needed four-day escape with my mother, Ana Victoria. Our journey was more than just a holiday; it was a celebration of my mother’s Latin American epicurean roots, love, and the exquisite flavors of Mexican cuisine.

From the moment we arrived, Etéreo embraced us with its warm hospitality. The lobby, an artfully curated space that seems to float above the greenery, welcomed us with the soothing scent of white copal and the refreshing taste of hibiscus tea—a place we did not return to see until our departure. Our assigned host guided us through tranquil pathways where every structure, crafted from natural stone and surrounded by shimmering pools, felt like a meditation in motion.

Our stay was punctuated by culinary adventures, with Itzam, the resort’s signature restaurant, leading the charge. Under the expert guidance of the executive chef, Carlos Segura, Itzam offers an immersive dining experience that celebrates the rich tapestry of Mexican heritage. Each dish tells a story, a narrative woven from local ingredients and traditional recipes passed down

through generations. The highlight, undoubtedly, was the cena de la abuela—a tasting menu that showcased cherished family recipes from the culinary team, each bite echoing the love and passion embedded in their grandmothers’ kitchens, which brought us back to my own family’s epicurean history. Imagine a Like Water for Chocolate film unfold in real time as we enjoyed every special meal. As I like to say, each meal was prepared with love.

The Flavors & Spirits of Etéreo program further enriched our culinary journey, featuring rotating chef residencies and innovative bar collaborations. We were fortunate to experience a special dinner prepared by celebrated chefs from around the globe, each bringing a unique flair to the table. The evening was a feast for the senses, with vibrant flavors and expertly paired beverages that transported us to the heart of Mexico’s culinary landscape.

Chef Segura’s commitment to sustainability resonated deeply with us. Each menu was crafted with an ethos of responsibility, sourcing ingredients from local farmers, fishermen, and artisans. Our taste buds danced with delight as we savored Oaxacaninspired wagyu tetelas and the refreshing vuelva a la vida verde, a zesty seafood medley that spoke to the coastal richness of the region. The toro taco, featuring bluefin tuna from Ensenada, was a testament to the resort’s dedication to honoring both tradition and sustainability.

Beyond the culinary delights, our days at Etéreo were filled with exploration and relaxation. We indulged in rejuvenating treatments at SANA, the resort’s spa, where ancient healing practices merged seamlessly with modern wellness trends. The serene atmosphere enveloped us, inviting us to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with ourselves.

Our evenings were spent beneath the stars, dining al fresco at Itzam, where the open-air setting offered panoramic views of the ocean. We relished the carefully curated wine and spirits experiences, which provided us with the opportunity to learn about the history of Mexican viticulture. The Mexican Wine Club and Spirits of Mexico tasting experiences were particularly memorable, as they unveiled the richness of local varietals and the intricate processes behind mezcal and tequila production.

Each meal became a treasured memory, from the casual elegance of Che Che, where Nikkei cuisine was redefined, to the beachside ambiance of Changarro, which served up mouthwatering ceviches and shrimp tacos that were simply irresistible. The vibrant colors and flavors of every dish were a feast for the eyes and palate, making each dining experience at Etéreo a remarkable celebration of culture and cuisine.

One evening, we participated in the much-anticipated Abuela Dinner, a collaborative effort among the resort’s chefs to pay homage to their roots. With each course, we were transported on a culinary journey across Mexico, exploring flavors from Puebla to Michoacán. Each dish was lovingly crafted, reflecting the unique stories of the chefs and their grandmothers. The camaraderie in the kitchen was palpable, and it was a joy to share this intimate experience with my mother, who reveled in the nostalgia of her own culinary heritage.

As our four-day retreat drew to a close, I was left with a profound sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared at Etéreo. This luxurious sanctuary offered us more than just opulent accommodations; it provided us with an immersive journey through the heart of Mexican culture, cuisine, and community. The connections we forged with the people and the land left an indelible mark on our hearts.

Etéreo, with its seamless blend of nature and luxury, truly captured the essence of what it means to travel. As we departed, I vowed to carry the spirit of this enchanting destination with me, reminding me that every meal is a story waiting to be told, a connection waiting to be made, and a memory waiting to be cherished.

Bernardus Lodge & Spa: Where Luxury is Defined

by the Details

The smallest of niceties sets Bernardus apart from the region’s hospitality crowd.

IN AND OF ITSELF, BERNARDUS LODGE & SPA ALWAYS delivers a luxurious experience. The chic resort, located in bucolic Carmel Valley, features a central pool and hot tub; verdant gardens in which to stroll; a pampering spa; an expansive, 10,000-sqarefoot bocce lawn; and destination dining. It’s just a 10-minute drive from charming Carmel-by-the-Sea and less than a mile from nearly 25 wineries and wine tasting rooms along Carmel Valley Road. Yet despite its overt appeal, it’s the smallest of niceties that set Bernardus apart from the region’s hospitality crowd.

More than just a luxurious retreat, Bernardus offers an experience. While the beauty of its grounds first captivates, subtle but thoughtful details elevate Bernardus from a beautiful getaway to a destination of true indulgence. Here, luxury is found not only in the spacious and sumptuous rooms but also in curated moments that surprise and delight, such as a glass of chilled rosé offered at check-in or a mini fridge stocked with beverages for the taking. That luxury is in the lobby’s live piano music and the Mercedes-Benz® program which provides guests the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary drive in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Luxury here is also found in the lobby’s complimentary morning coffee service and in Friday and Saturday morning poolside yoga. And it’s especially found in the resort’s “Silver Linings” philosophy in which intuitive staff adeptly lead guests to a place of calm with a warm and welcoming manner.

Bernardus celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. Its staying power is attributed to all the aforementioned aspects as well as its destination dining restaurant, Lucia Restaurant & Bar, where an all-season, nearly al fresco dining terrace and chandeliered main dining room offer an enchanting place in which to dine. Executive chef Christian Ojeda’s progressive style lends a fresh take on classics which he infuses with local, seasonal influences. Many of his ingredients, such as Meyer lemons and fresh herbs, come directly from the restaurant’s two-acre organic garden, and some dishes feature honey gathered from the property’s apiary program featuring Italian honeybees. (Guests may take pre-dinner stroll through the herb garden where they are invited to pluck fresh rosemary or lavender to enhance their own meals.) And with a 15,000-bottle wine cellar and a garden-to-glass craft cocktail program, guests are sure to find the perfect aperitif and wine pairing.

The revered Spa at Bernardus also contributes to the resort’s staying power. Offering an in-depth, individualized approach to wellness, the spa features luxe treatments infused with botanical ingredients, many culled from the local vineyards and on-site gardens. Indulge in more traditional facials and massage or take your wellness journey in a different direction with a tarot card reading, a healing crystals workshop, or an intention-setting session with the resort’s wellness and reflections provider, Destynee Gray, an experienced practitioner whose guest interactions yield

powerful and life-changing results. Before or after your treatment, enjoy the spa’s private warming pool or pull up a chaise near the larger pool overlooking the bocce courts and outdoor terrace. And don’t miss the spa boutique’s great assortment of clothing and gifts, particularly the line of eye-catching women’s swimsuits made expressly for the resort.

Bernardus’ 73 large rooms and suites are equipped to please even the most pampered traveler. Scattered throughout the property and overlooking either the main pool, the central bocce and croquet lawn, or the rose and chef’s gardens, each is the epitome of ranch house chic featuring refined décor, comfy furnishings, and heated bathroom floors—a highly under-rated indulgence, especially in the cold of winter. The resort’s villas are the choice for those seeking a little more living space. Plus, they provide quick access to the adults-only infinity whirlpool and firepit, which provide lovely mountain and vineyard views. At 1,050 and 2,100 square feet, these deluxe quarters feature vaulted ceilings; French doors; large master baths with freestanding, hammered copper soaking tubs; al fresco showers; doublesided fireplaces; and fully furnished private patios with firepits.

Bernardus provides little reason to leave its property, but if you must, the resort is within arm’s reach of hiking and biking trails, championship golf courses, working ranches, a 4,000-acre regional park, and Refuge, a two-acre water park of thalassotherapy pools. The concierge team doesn’t just provide recommendations—they craft personalized itineraries. Whether it’s securing a last-minute reservation at a nearby restaurant, arranging a private wine tasting tour, or even organizing a bespoke yoga session in the vineyard, every experience is tailored to the guest’s preference. This ease and thoughtfulness with which wishes are met is a Bernardus trademark.

A Bernardus stay and its seamless blend of nature, luxury, and warmth make it so much more than just another resort. Thoughtful touches, immersive experiences, and dedication to detail ensure guests leave with a sense of enrichment, peace, and connection. This is a place where time seems to slow down and every moment feels like a gift.

Legendary East Coast Charm: Rhode Island’s Ocean House

Where elegance and quiet serenity suspend time

OOZING OLD-WORLD CHARM AND A REFINED GRACE, Ocean House embodies the fantasy and romanticism that many envision when considering a visit to Rhode Island. With its grand, shingled facade and expansive verandas overlooking the Atlantic, Ocean House evokes a timeless elegance that indulges guests with an experience capturing the Ocean State’s maritime history, its rugged coastal beauty, and the kind of quiet serenity that seemingly suspends time.

A quintessential example of New England luxury, the Relais & Châteaux property is a landmark of architectural splendor and a symbol of the region’s gracious hospitality. Perched high on the bluffs in the charming and tony seaside village of Watch Hill, Ocean House boasts panoramic views of Block Island Sound and what is considered one of the Eastern Seaboard’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. The resort transcends the traditional hotel experience by offering a true sense of place and a legacy of exceptional service. Originally opened in 1868, the resort is a stunning example of Victorian seaside resort architecture. Long a refuge for celebrities, dignitaries, and a loyal clientele who value privacy and quiet luxury, the hotel was painstakingly reconstructed in 2004 and recreated in homage to New England’s golden age of hospitality. Great attention was paid to preserving its historic charm while integrating modern comforts. After the $140 million rebuild, it

reopened its doors in 2010 with 49 spacious guestrooms and 20 signature suites.

The owner’s commitment to generosity is more than evident. Staff is attentive and anticipatory, and the little extras that make a big difference are abundant: decadent Molton Brown bath amenities, complimentary in-room snacks and sodas that are replenished daily (malted milk balls were a delightful surprise), turn-down chocolates, morning coffee service and complimentary pastries that rival your favorite European café, afternoon tea and delicious sweet treats made by the resort’s super talented executive pastry chef, Jessica Quiet, and a small gift upon departure.

Resort activities for all ages are abundant and include croquet, shuffle board, squash courts, and billiards. (Golf and tennis may be arranged by request at a private facility.) The state-of-the-art fitness studio offers yoga and exercise classes. An indoor lap pool, a screening room with movie library, and ocean activities such as surfing and paddleboarding provide activity for every interest. Bike tours and private yacht and fishing charters may be arranged. The hotel’s Center for Wine & Culinary Arts offers near-daily complimentary wine tastings and cooking classes. Children will delight in the self-guided Mortimer Mouse Scavenger Hunt, the clues of which reveal whimsical, hidden details throughout the hotel. (Those who complete the hunt receive a special prize.) And

the Ocean & Harvest Spa, recipient of the Forbes Five-Star award, features 12,000 square feet of luxury with a full menu of decadent, seasonally changing treatments. Adding to the resort’s allure is its walkable proximity to quaint Watch Hill Village with its many shops and galleries.

Ownership also reveals a commitment to great art. Fans of the Madeline series of children’s books by Ludwig Bemelmans will thrill upon entering the Bemelmans Gallery at Ocean House, North America’s largest permanent, private collection of the illustrator’s architectural commissions, product campaigns, and Madeline sketches. The gallery showcases select pieces never before seen by the public. Hotel hallways feature original and amusing works by the French artist SEM (also known as George Goursat) who, in the years before World War I, created caricatures satirizing the beau monde of French high society. Even the lobby-adjacent ladies lounge features a panoply of artworks over which to idle: original 19th century watercolors of society ladies depicting fashions of the time. And if you can sneak a peek into the resort’s members-only Club Room with its Ferrari red leather bar stools, you’ll find the famed Burt Britton collection of celebrity self-portraits lining the walls. The hotel also hosts exhibitions of leading contemporary artists from major galleries in the region.

Key criteria for a Relais & Châteaux designation is exceptional gastronomy, and Ocean House delivers with a variety of gourmet and casual dining options. Year-round, The Bistro serves seasonally inspired dishes within a convivial setting, and fine dining COAST (a Forbes Five-Star establishment) offers a menu showcasing the finest seasonal products from local farmers and purveyors, typically sourced same day. Additional dining options are offered during spring and summer, such as the Veranda Raw Bar serving shuckedto-order local oysters, clams, jumbo shrimp, and lobster. The entire culinary and wine staffs are open, engaging, and more than willing to share and instruct via the resort’s variety of wine tastings and cooking classes.

Simply put, Ocean House is an iconic destination and quintessential Rhode Island experience that appeals to the senses, the spirit, and the desire for something both legendary and unique. The beauty of the exclusive location and the combination of serene natural surroundings, historic charm, and world class luxury create an unforgettable coastal New England experience that’s timelessly romantic and enchanting.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe Enchants

An oasis of tranquility where nature, art, cuisine, and luxury intersect

NESTLED IN THE HEART OF THE STUNNING SANGRE DE CRISTO foothills, Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe immerses guests in the timeless beauty and spirit of New Mexico. Located just beyond Santa Fe’s iconic downtown plaza, the resort allows for a “best of both worlds” scenario: proximity to the history, culture, and art that define the region and seclusion within a bucolic setting that encourages both relaxation and adventure. This was my first time exploring beyond the central plaza, and I was beguiled by the resort’s setting and its expansive panorama. The state’s nickname— The Land of Enchantment—suddenly made sense. Particularly captivating was witnessing the area’s first snowfall of the season. The flakes appeared just as I arrived, and within hours, the resort was blanketed in pillowy white. The soft powder remained during my 48-hour visit, and it was pure magic. My stay concluded a nearly two-week cross country trip of travel assignments, and the snow-imposed respite was more than welcome. Clearly a “been there, done that” scenario for the entire Four Seasons team, the staff kept walkways cleared and fireplaces roaring, allowing guests full use of the snow-packed property. I warmed both my inside and outside with a happy hour cocktail at the cozy bar before retreating to my suite for a room service dinner by the soft glow of a wood-burning fire. A hot bath in a deep soaking tub led to a peaceful night’s sleep within the heavenly Four Seasons bed.

What might otherwise have been a following day of hiking and biking was spent within the luxurious spa—for which I was not at all sorry—and where I enjoyed the Mountain Spirit purification treatment: 110 minutes of pure bliss that began with a sage smudging, followed by an adobe clay body mask, a warm wrap, a scalp and foot massage, and finally, a juniper-sage hot stone massage. Santa Fe, due to its natural beauty, rich cultural history, and spiritual energy, is considered to have healing powers. After this decadent spa treatment, I became a believer.

I will definitely have to return some day in order to partake in the exploration as planned for me by the resort’s “Adventure Architect,” Hans Loehr. The charismatic, 10-plus year veteran of the resort customizes experiences that cater to all desires, such as geological and archeological expeditions to ancient indigenous dwellings, a Georgia O’Keeffe Country and Ghost Ranch tour inspired by the legendary artist whose solo adventures through the New Mexico desert made her a cultural icon, or an e-bike excursion to the Valles Caldera volcano, one of the largest young calderas on earth. I was looking forward to my three-hour e-bike ride to Lamy along the Rail Trail, part of the old Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway corridor. The route apparently offers stunning views of New Mexico’s high desert landscape, with wide vistas, rugged terrain, and the distant Sangre de Cristo Mountains—something to look forward to during my next visit.

“My passion is sharing my love of the outdoors and this magical destination with guests who are looking for authentic cultural experiences,” says Loehr. “The reward of seeing our guests enjoying the breathtaking beauty of New Mexico is priceless.”

In addition to Loehr’s curated activities, the resort features complimentary offerings such as a daily guided hike along the Camino Encantado trail with its sweeping mountain views, yoga sessions, and varied cooking and mixology demonstrations. And the lovely swimming pool and hot tub are no doubt a draw during Santa Fe’s annual 300 days of sunshine.

The Santa Fe vibe is more than captured within the resort grounds where iconic adobe architecture and art installations that change monthly pay homage to this artistic and cultural mecca. Santa Fe is home to more than 250 art galleries, the highest concentration of any city its size and the third largest art market behind New York and Los Angeles. Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe champions local art by featuring an artist of the month. Each selected artist’s work is displayed throughout the resort, with a new installation highlighted monthly. The resort also features an art concierge program that allows guests to completely personalize their art experience. Led by Mike McKosky, a fixture in the Santa Fe fine art scene since opening InArt Santa Fe in 2006, the program provides a range of services allowing guests to customize an itinerary. McKosky can coordinate artist meet-and-greets with world renowned artists, private showings, or after-hours experiences at some of the city’s top galleries.

Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado is home to 65 intimate and newly transformed casita guest rooms and suites within its 57 acres. All rooms and suites have been significantly enhanced with new, custom-made furniture, technology, lighting, window treatments, artwork, and a new color palette with notes of coral and rust, reminiscent of the surrounding vistas. All have furnished terraces and patios, heated bathroom floors, wood-burning fireplaces, Nespresso® coffee machines, and deluxe minibar libations and treats. The resort also recently debuted a landscape redesign embodying the essence of the region’s natural beauty and culture with a focus on sustainability.

Sustenance comes via Terra, the resort’s signature restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner within a cozy dining room where large picture windows bring the outside in. (The visuals are particularly mesmerizing during a snow storm.) Santa Fe’s culinary landscape blends Spanish, Native American, and Mexican influences and flavors, and Terra’s menu reflects this. Think huevos rancheros and chilaquiles for breakfast, green chile corn chowder and beef brisket tacos for lunch, and duck confit sope and cedar-smoked barramundi seabass for dinner, among many other delectable and seasonal offerings.

Santa Fe has long beckoned those seeking a solo getaway, journey of personal discovery, or navigating a time of change. Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado offers an oasis of tranquility where nature, art, cuisine, and luxury intersect, providing the ultimate destination, sun or snow.

Savor the Winter Season at Meadowood Napa Valley

SET IN A BEAUTIFUL, TREE-LINED LANDSCAPE IN ST. HELENA, Meadowood Napa Valley offers 36 rooms and suites on 250 stunning acres. The resort combines rural rusticity with comfortable refinements, making it an ideal locale for the holidays.

SEASON’S GREETINGS

Meadowood is all about relaxation, rejuvenation, and getting centered. The resort offers many unique wellness options to suit a variety of tastes. In addition to a robust lineup of daily, complimentary fitness classes, their In Good Health series focuses each month on a specific theme. A recent program featured December Dance, which brought expert instructors in barre, salsa, cardio dance, and other styles.

Meadowood has a great family vibe. During the holidays, the resort set up a Santa’s Helpers Camp open on December 22 and 23. There were scavenger hunts, crafts, festive food, and many other activities for children. The resort also created its own North Pole setup with more crafting and yummy treats. Of course, the kids (or those who were simply young at heart) stood in line to get that cherished picture with Santa. And though December festivities may feel like a distant dream about now, the resort continues to be a Napa Valley winter gem.

FOOD AND WINE AT FORUM

Forum is Meadowood’s delicious farm-to-table restaurant offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with weekend brunch. Enjoy dishes infused with vegetables and fruit from their gardens.

The beloved restaurant also opens its doors for Golden Hour every day from 3 to 6 p.m. “Not only is it a great time to be in Forum, as the natural light changes dramatically with the sunset, but it’s a great value in terms of cocktails and wines by the glass as well as some small bites from the kitchen,” said Justin Eddy, Meadowood’s director of food and beverage.

Forum is an incredibly versatile public restaurant nestled in a peaceful, wooded location. Even though Meadowood is a hotel and private club, anyone may visit to dine. “All are welcome. Whatever the occasion, our team will curate an experience that exceeds expectations. We have a fantastic cocktail program, a great wine list, and a menu that is hard to match across the valley in terms of quality and value,” said Eddy.

As Forum continues evolving as a premier Napa Valley dining destination, they are excited to bring more specialized dining experiences to guests, such as themed weekly dinners or live entertainment.

THE WINE CENTER AT MEADOWOOD

Tucked in the private, forested hillsides of Napa Valley is The Wine Center, an amenity unique to Meadowood and led by venerable wine authority and author Kelli White. Guests may tailor a single class to the proclivities of their palates or take part in an “Oenophile’s Escape,” a multi-day journey throughout the valley taking them behind the scenes with luminary winemakers, deep into vineyards with viticulturists, and back to the table over curated dinners that explore the nuances of wines from the Napa Valley and beyond.

“All our classes are private, which means it’s the perfect time to ask any nagging wine questions you might be embarrassed to extend in a group. Our instructors are knowledgeable and charming, and we serve utterly fabulous wines. What’s not to love?” said White, director of education at The Wine Center at Meadowood.

Every season The Wine Center introduces new classes and events. White is currently developing a class that focuses exclusively on stemware—how and why the different shapes affect the taste of a wine—as well as a tasting that examines the wines some of Napa Valley’s top winemakers have made abroad. “There will be many rich experiences in 2025. We are also confirming our series of vintner chats, wine dinners, and immersion weekends,” said White.

MEADOWOOD SPA

An exciting new spa treatment starting in January is Pietro Simone’s Corrective Lift Facial, which combines five different signature massage techniques with five advanced technologies such as face cupping, microcurrents, LED therapy, and nano-pen delivery system.

“It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with Pietro Simone Skincare, and we are excited to be the first property in North America to offer this truly bespoke experience and revolutionary skin science to our discerning guests,” said Jennifer Brunetti, spa manager.

WINTER WONDERS OF WINE COUNTRY

Experience the charm of Napa Valley in the winter, a blissfully uncrowded time compared to summer. The extra chill in the air enhances the season’s beauty.

“There’s no better time to drink Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon than in winter. It warms the soul,” said Eddy. “Winter is my favorite time of year to explore Napa Valley. Weather is a factor, but there are still plenty of bluebird sky days, and the rainfall turns the hillsides green. It’s easier to get into restaurants and visit wineries. There’s less traffic on the roads, and people tend to be relaxed and approachable, particularly those in the hospitality industry who’ve had a chance to catch their breath from harvest.”

THE LUXE BUCKET LIST

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME ADVENTURES FOR THE ONE PERCENT.

A KENYAN SAFARI

It’s a dream to see the Big Five out in the wild (leopards, rhinos, elephants, lions, and African buffalos), but it is not easy to do so. Forget about the logistics of actually getting up close and personal with these majestic beasts in their natural habitat, and think about yourself for a second. After what could be upwards of 30-plus hours of traveling from the States, most will want a cozy bed, a great place to stay, and a stiff drink — and not necessarily in that order. Sadly, not all safaris are built the same — which is why we recommend staying at Cottar’s 1920s Camp, located in the private, 7,608-acre Olderkesi Conservancy, on the border of Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara National Reserve (and letting the experts at ProAfrika Safaris do all of the logistical planning for you). This is truly one of the most bespoke, upscale experiences available — especially in that one with deep pockets doesn’t have to “glamp.” In addition to its own private airstrip (a true essential when arriving from Nairobi) Cottar’s Safaris offers one of the most truly exceptional places to stay Mara-wide in its Private Bush Villa. This behemoth, 10,000 square-foot retreat comes with eight dedicated members of staff, has its own private 82-foot swimming pool, and boasts breathtaking views onto the savannah plains with a backdrop of the Olentoroto Hill. Although the Bush Villa is part of the main camp, it feels like it’s set apart, and that could be because it is: guests will need to be escorted by jeep, security guard, or Maasai Warrior to the main mess tent which is where the action happens. Situated with a hilltop view of the rolling savannahs, the camp’s center encompasses an Art Nouveau bar where dedicated staff members make a mean Mint Julep amid vintage-era décor such as first-edition books, sextants, binoculars, and telescopes. This particular safari features a spa, and also offers a traditional safari bath, best enjoyed with bubbles and champagne at sunset, as well as unique activities including immersive walks with a local Maasai medicine and foraging expert, an immersive raptor experience, evening talks on the history of African travelers, and visits to local Maasai villages — which is among one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences modern-day travelers can have. Perhaps most importantly, however, Cottar’s Safaris has become known throughout Kenya for its conservation efforts, becoming the first camp in Africa to attain Preferred by Nature’s “Ecosystem Restoration Validation” certificate, and are one of only 11 accredited Long Run Global Ecosphere Retreats in the World, working via its Cottar’s Wildlife Conservancy Trust (CWCT) to conserve critical wilderness and wildlife corridors and areas bordering the Maasai Mara and Serengeti National Reserves.

CRUISING TO ANTARCTICA

How many people in the world can say they’ve been to Antarctica? The answer: not many. It’s expensive, precarious — the Weddell Sea being one of the most dangerous in the world — and time-consuming, in that you’ll be at sea for days at a time without land in sight. But if you’re going to make the trek, you had best do it right, and glamorously — and that’s where Swan Hellenic comes in. The British company relaunched in July 2020 with the sole purpose of offering upscale cultural expedition cruising via its purpose-built boutique ships that feature elegant Scandi-design interiors, extensive outdoor spaces, and dedicated expedition facilities. SH Diana, a PC 6 ice-class vessel, launched in May 2023 as a luxury expedition vessel, with on-board elements inclusive of a dedicated presentation and lecture theater, on-board Tender boats to take guests ashore more comfortably than customary expedition Zodiacs, a state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna, club room, swimming pool, and three restaurants. But what sets Swan Hellenic apart is its experts: famous explorers, seasoned expedition guides, and leading authorities in their fields join in on the Antarctic fun, as do unique organizations such as JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, Chopra, and the SETI Institute. On many cruises, you can also participate in Swan Hellenic’s Citizen Science partnerships, contributing valuable data obtained during your expeditions and on board, reporting cloud data with NASA, recording whale sightings with Happywhale, monitoring phytoplankton with the Secchi Disk Study, and Antarctic seabird numbers with Stony Brook University. And best of all, you’ll be able to witness, first-hand, an untapped part of the world: the emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill Island, Adélie penguins, blue-eyed shags, humpback whales, minkes, and leopard seals at Pléneau and Petermann Islands; and finally, finally say you’re among the few to have conquered that tumultuous Weddell Sea.

WINE-TASTING IN SOUTH AFRICA’S STELLENBOSCH

In the States, we have Napa and Sonoma, along with the Willamette Valley, Central Coast, and newer wine regions in Virginia and Texas. But wouldn’t it be a dream to sip and swill in South Africa’s Cape Winelands? We think so, at least. Indulge in some of the best food and wine in Franschhoek, which is considered the gourmet capital of the Cape and is home to some of the country’s best restaurants, before heading to Stellenbosch, the country’s most famous wine region — and what is considered to be the birthplace of Pinotage home to over 150 wine estates. You can stay where it all began in Constantia, which is considered to be the first-ever wine estate in South Africa, located just 20 minutes from Cape Town, and known for its Sauvignon Blanc, Bordeaux-blends, and Muscat Blanc. For your stay, we recommend first checking into the magical Royal Portfolio collection properties of The Silo Hotel, a sanctuary in Cape Town celebrating art, style, and design that is defined by its shimmering pillowed-glass windows with panoramic views stretching from Table Mountain to the Table Bay harbor and which is located six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (which houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art) and is close to some of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, such as Fyn Restaurant and La Colombe. Then, head to La Residence, a glorious property located on a private 30-acre estate in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley. Here, you can enjoy the best of the region with private wine tastings at nearby wineries; helicopter flights through the Winelands; strolls through a natural backdrop of olive trees, vines, and roses; and dinners at one of the many award-winning restaurants in the Valley.

LAISSEZ LE BON TEMPS ROULER

DURING MARDI GRAS

Mardi Gras is something that should be experienced once in a lifetime. It’s a rite of passage, an opportunity to really let laissez bon temps rouler in a cloud of purple, gold, and green. French for “Fat Tuesday,” the season, known best as Carnival, begins on January 6, and continues until the midnight before Ash Wednesday. It’s wild to think that this ode to revelry didn’t become a renowned event until the late 1830s, with street processions of carriages and horseback riders, all featuring masked and mysterious patrons, lit by gaslight torches. Today, there’s a decidedly more hedonistic bent to Mardi Gras; a revelry that consumes the city via costumes, krewes, balls, dining (including the ever-present King Cake) and, of course, drinking. Becoming part of this giant party is unlike anything you’ll be likely to experience in life. That being said, when it comes to a place to stay, those who like their creature comforts will want to confine their French Quarter ministrations to partying only. Stay at the tony Four Seasons New Orleans, which is just far enough away to take a break from the crowds should you need some peace and quiet, and close enough that you can easily join in. Plus, the property features the crème de la crème of the Big Easy in Donald Link’s Chemin à la Mer eatery, Alon Shaya’s Miss River restaurant, the gorgeous and glorious Chandelier Bar, and a spa that will melt all traces of late Mardi Gras nights away.

CAMPING UNDER THE STARS IN WADI RUM

In Wadi Rum, Jordan — otherwise known as the Valley of the Moon the stars appear so close that you can touch them. Or it seems that way, at least. In this valley, cut into the sandstone and granite rock of southern Jordan near Saudi Arabia’s border, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ideal spot for a proper Bedouin experience under the stars. Which, as it happens, is one of the many reasons to go: throughout the year, Jordan becomes a popular destination for astronomy enthusiasts and skywatchers alike to catch spectacular starry displays and meteor showers (including this past summer’s Perseid meteor shower, November’s Leonid meteor shower, or the upcoming Geminids meteor shower in mid-December). The Memories Aicha Luxury Camp is definitely the most luxurious glamping experience in the area — 55 tents, bordered by rugged mountains and the stunning Arabian desert — a standout being its lavishly-decorated panoramic luxury suite with plush furnishings inspired by the colorful sands of the desert. Beyond that, Jordan also now has a Hollywood pedigree: Olivewood Film Studios, located just outside of Amman, consist of two 16,000-plus square foot soundstages, where the likes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Dune 1 & 2 and The Martian were filmed.

TAKING A DIP IN THE BLUE LAGOON

Blue Lagoon Iceland was founded in 1992 to unlock the benefits of geothermal water, but it’s become one of (if not the most visited) tourist attractions in Iceland thanks to its unusual natural phenomenon of ocean water and freshwater converging in a tectonic realm of searing heat and extreme pressure, creating geothermal seawater over a mile beneath the earth. The water, which is enriched with silica, algae, and minerals, is known for its healing, rejuvenating, and nourishing abilities. It’s a great introduction to the Land of Fire and Ice, though Sky Lagoon, a man-made geothermal spa just 13 minutes from the center of Reykjavik, is certainly as incredible, though in a more convivial, less wildly outrageous way. We recommend trying both though the latter is certainly more convenient in that it’s closer to our recommended, over-the-top, five-star hotel pick, The Reykjavik EDITION, which opened its doors in 2021, the very same year as Sky Lagoon. Located in the historical, scenic heart of downtown Reykjavik by Old Harbor port next door to the Olafur Eliasson-designed Harpa Concert and Conference Center, the sleek, sensual hotel boasts a variety of distinctive food, beverage, and entertainment outlets. On a good night, you might even see the Northern Lights from the seventh floor bar, The Roof, though hidden sanctuary TÖLT, which is named after the unique fourth gait of Icelandic horses and which is inspired by Icelandic culture, with local Icelandic spirits dominating the menu, is much cozier —and what we feel is the perfect venue for late night cocktails come winter.

EXPERIENCING THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN NORWAY

There is nothing quite so majestic as the aurora borealis. Seeing the colors swirl and dance, live in person, is nothing short of incredible. In our experience, the very best place in the world to see the Northern Lights is directly beneath the Aurora Oval in the coastal city of Tromsø, Norway. Though many believe winter to be its peak time, statistically, the most active seasons are autumn and spring, when the earth’s orientation towards the sun maximizes the probability of solar flares interacting with the planet’s magnetic field. Plus, as a bonus, you’ll be able to see the aurora without freezing your buns off, and it’s less crowded, which is much more appealing. Despite being in the Aurora Zone, the aurora can be a finicky bombshell, and as such, you definitely need the right guide to get you to witness her glory. Should all else fail on a cloudy night, North Experience can take you to their nearby aurora base station for a glimpse of this outrageous spectacle; they’ll take care of everything including showing you how to best take photos to witness the lights. While in Tromsø, there are a variety of activities to engage in outside of aurora hunting. Float peacefully on a lake — underneath the stars or in broad daylight — with Authentic North; tour the Troll Museum and Arctic Cathedral for pieces of Norway’s legendary folklore; and indulge in some incredible meals with local, native fare at restaurants like Bardus Bistro, Smak, Fiskekompaniet, and Walter & Leonard. Should you choose the more convenient option of staying near the city’s center as a opposed to a more private luxury lodge outside of town, Clarion Hotel The Edge a Scandi-cool stay located on Tromsø Harbor — is our top pick.

RANGE ROVER SPORT EDITION TWO: First drive across the Cotswolds

JLR’s new track worthy car dressed in British countryside finest

I FIRST MET THE RANGE ROVER SPORT SV EDITION TWO AT RANGE ROVER House in Carmel during Monterey Car Week in August 2024. It was love at first sight. I mentioned then how little time with the car was needed to make you aspire to own one of the limited edition models. In mid-October, I found myself waiting to be picked up by Land Rover in Southwest London after what has become a regular flight for me back to my home country of England from San Francisco.

It was not long before a Range Rover SV in Sunrise Copper appeared to take me to the Rectory Hotel in the Cotswolds to experience what Jaguar Land Rover’s SV (Special Vehicle) division does to amplify the core characteristics of their iconic vehicles and push the boundaries of what is possible from the brand that has become a symbol of British engineering, adventure, and luxury. Being chauffeured in the Range Rover SV gave me the ability to experience the quality of the interiors curated by SV, delivering comfort, technology, and tranquility. Designed to feel like flying in first class, you really feel cocooned in the SV

signature suite with the added luxury of numerous massage seat settings, including a hot stone massage that quickly allowed me to catch up on some of the sleep missed the night before.

While the Range Rover SV, with its most exclusive materials and finishes commonly seen in the worlds of luxury watches and jewelry, is putting up a good contest to be the most luxurious car on the market, that was not why I was here. I had traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the home of Range Rover to experience the specially tuned 626-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 engine of Range Rover’s most powerful and fastest-ever vehicle: the Range Rover Sport SV EDITION TWO.

It quickly became clear how special this car is when Jamal Hameedi, director of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicles Operations (SVO) since 2018, explained how rare this Range Rover Sport is going to be and that it is unlikely that there will ever be a full lineup of them in one place again. Jamal, who was previously Global Performance Chief Engineer during

Range Rover SV at the Rectory

his 27-year career at Ford Motor Company and known as the “Father of the F-150 Raptor,” knows a thing or two about performance SUVs. On Michelin Pilot All-Season 4 tires the 0-60 miles per hour of the EDITION TWO is 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 180 mph.

A beautiful autumnal afternoon greeted me when we stepped onto the driveway of the Rectory to SV EDITION TWOs demonstrating four new design curations: the Blue Nebula, inspired by the Northern Atlantic coast; the Marl Grey Gloss with a gloss carbon twill exterior pack; a Sunrise Copper with satin carbon twill; and the final exclusive curation featuring a Ligurian Black gloss exterior with an exposed carbon fiber bonnet. The gladly accepted mission was for each driver to test the limits of the English countryside’s highway code, taking each car from the Cotswolds west across the Severn Bridge and up to Eastnor Castle to assess the offroad capabilities on the tracks which have been used to test every Land Rover product ever made, before looping back in the autumnal darkness.

I’m not sure that the local farmers were expecting to see five SV EDITION TWO Range Rover sports roar by in SV mode down the A429 towards Cirencester, but for the drivers, these cars were in their element, eating mile after mile of A and B roads without any sign of slipping on the damp orange and yellow leaves. The Body and Soul Seats (BASS) only enhance the connection between car and driver as the in-car sensory technology delivers a physical and immersive audio and well-being experience through the use of haptic transducer technology.

Despite feeling slightly uneasy taking such a beautiful and pristine car, with performance tires, around the Eastnor Castle tracks where Land Rovers are still pushed to their limits during testing to this day, each SV EDITION TWO took every wet and muddy obstacle with ease, utilizing the leading technology and superior design that have made Range Rover the luxury offroad icon that it is. The mainly highway drive back to the Cotswolds was the perfect segment to experience the sheer comfort and quiet tranquility of the comfort drive mode coupled with my favorite hot stone massage mode. How will I live without this?

Range Rover Sport SV EDITION ONE navigating the hill climb

The final test of the well-rounded experience took place at the historic Prescott Speed Hill Climb in Gloucestershire. We were lucky enough to test the car’s track capabilities on one of only 30 days that this track is allowed to be driven on annually. Despite the track being only 1,031 meters in length, this was enough to really feel the outstanding performance, comparable to much lighter sports cars, enabled by the aerodynamic enhancements of the carbon fiber bonnet and carbon ceramic brakes.

So, what did my 48 hours in the Range Rover Sport SV EDITION TWO teach me? It’s fast—really fast—and sounds great. One of my biggest fears is the day we will no longer hear the distinctive sound of the V8 on our roads. It doesn’t crackle like the old SVR or F-Type, but it has a very powerful grunt.

Like the rest of the SV lineup, it’s luxurious, comparable to the titans of automotive luxury.

It’s practical yet stylish. You can easily do the school run, fill the boot full of Labrador retrievers, and scale some of the British countryside’s muddiest and harshest terrain before heading out to dinner in Knightsbridge where, no doubt, the valet will position it right out front.

This Range Rover, like many before it, is full of firsts which shows how far this brand has come, since it was the first car to be displayed at the Louvre, the first car to ever have ABS brakes in 1989, and the first to have electronic suspension in 1992, to name a few. It’s now the first car to have this level of luxury and curation and which can compete on the track as well as scale mountains. What on earth will they think of next? A Land Rover Defender designed to tackle the Nürburgring?

THE TRIFECTA

A. Lange & Söhne celebrates 30 years of the Lange 1 with four limited editions.

IN HONOR OF THE 30 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ICONIC Lange 1, A. Lange & Söhne has released four limited edition pieces that pay homage to the timepiece’s legacy. Known for its off-center dial, outsize date display, and meticulous craftsmanship, the Lange 1 has been a hallmark of German precision watchmaking since its debut in 1994. To mark this milestone, the brand has presented two special editions of the Lange 1 and two of the Little Lange 1.

The anniversary collection features the Lange 1 and Little Lange 1 in 950 platinum with a striking black onyx dial and in 750 pink gold with a radiant blue dial crafted from 925 silver. Limited to 300 pieces each, the Lange 1 models are paired with a 38.5mm case, while the smaller versions, limited to 150 pieces each, sport a more refined 36.8mm case. Both models maintain the signature esthetic of slender bezels and prominent lugs, adding a touch of sophistication to this commemorative release.

Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of A. Lange & Söhne, notes, “When the Lange 1 launched 30 years ago, it broke the existing design rules and defined its very own style. It symbolizes our unyielding ambition to innovate and refine.” The design of the Lange 1 has always

been about balance and refinement, guided by the principles of the golden ratio. With Roman numerals, lancet-shaped appliqués, and a harmonious arrangement of its dial elements, the watch remains visually captivating even 30 years after its introduction. The off-center dial configuration, complemented by the power-reserve indicator and subsidiary seconds display, is a testament to its enduring design.

The watches also feature the L121.1 manufacture caliber, a movement that powers both models. Introduced in 2015 as the 50th manufacturer movement, it offers a seamless date change at midnight and a 72-hour power reserve, all thanks to the reliable twin mainspring barrel. The movement, visible through the sapphirecrystal caseback, showcases exquisite hand-finishing, including a three-quarter plate crafted from untreated German silver and decorated with Glashütte ribbing, along with eight gold chatons secured by blued screws for contrasting accents.

Since its inception, the Lange 1 has inspired an entire family of watches, expanding its impact with models like the Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar and the Time Zone, carrying the weight of the invaluable reputation of A. Lange & Söhne.

Introducing The Cubitus

Patek Philippe debuts a new collection for the first time in 25 years.

PATEK PHILIPPE PRACTICALLY BROKE THE INTERNET THIS October with the official debut of its first new collection in over two decades. The brand introduced the all-new Cubitus collection, a daring departure from tradition that embodies elegance and modernity. Featuring a distinctive square-shaped case with rounded corners, the collection debuts in three versions, each unique in its character.

The focal point of the collection is the Cubitus Grande Date, Ref. 5822P-001, which introduces an all-new complication in Patek Philippe’s portfolio. Powered by the newly developed caliber 240 PS CI J LU, this ultra-thin self-winding movement drives a grand date, day, and moon-phase display, offering precision and legibility with patented innovations in energy management. Its 45mm platinum case houses a horizontally embossed sunburst blue dial, framed by white gold markers and hands, and is completed by a navy-blue strap. A baguette-cut diamond at six o’clock adds another luxurious element to the timepiece, exemplifying the perfect marriage of esthetics and craftsmanship.

The Cubitus collection expands with two additional models: the Cubitus Ref. 5821/1AR and the Cubitus Ref. 5821/1A. The Cubitus Ref. 5821/1AR is a two-tone rose gold and steel version, boasting a bold 45mm square case with rounded edges and a slim profile. The blue sunburst dial with rose gold applied markers enhances its legibility and sleek design. Powered by the caliber 26-330 S C, this self-winding model features a 21K gold rotor and a stop-seconds function, ensuring precision and functionality. The rose-gold-and-steel bracelet with a patented fold-over clasp adds a contemporary yet timeless appeal.

Finally, the Cubitus Ref. 5821/1A is a 45mm steel model with an olive green, horizontally embossed dial. The ultimate Patek Philippe design that blends sophistication with sportiness through the watch, the Cubitus Ref. 5821/1A features a polished and satinbrushed finish. In contrast, its self-winding movement that features the same 21K gold rotor ensures optimal performance.

A brand-new collection from Patek Philippe was certainly not on our Q4 of 2024 bingo card, but it has breathed some fresh air into the industry for the end of the year.

Safe & Sound’s Gala: A Night of Community and Generosity

A legacy of preventing child abuse and empowering families in San Francisco

FOR OVER 50 YEARS, SAN FRANCISCO NONPROFIT SAFE & SOUND has been a beacon of hope, dedicated to preventing child abuse, empowering families, and fostering community healing. With a mission rooted in advancing equity and justice, this organization has transformed countless lives, serving as both a lifeline for families in crisis and a driving force for societal change.

A Night of Purpose: The 2024 Blue Ribbon Celebration took place on Saturday, December 7. Safe & Sound hosted its 2024 fundraising event at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco. The evening, filled with cocktails, a live auction, dinner, and dancing, raised vital funds for the organization’s impactful programs. Over the years, this annual event has consistently generated more than $1 million, supporting initiatives that have contributed to a remarkable 66% reduction in child abuse rates in the Bay Area over the last 15 years. “Our community’s generosity enables us to continue the fight against child abuse,” said Dr. Pegah Faed, CEO of Safe & Sound. “While we’ve made incredible strides, the journey isn’t over. The dream of a world free from childhood trauma drives us forward.”

SHARED VISION AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Co-chair Farah Makras, who has been actively involved with Safe & Sound for over two years, reflected on the evening: “It was my absolute honor to co-chair this amazing event with Wayne Osborne. Seeing a full house tonight, with so many people here to support this mission, fills my heart with joy.” Makras also praised the live auction, led by charismatic auctioneer Liam Mayclem: “Liam is an absolute treasure. His energy and ability to captivate the audience make the experience unforgettable.”

SPOTLIGHT ON RESILIENCE: ANNA KELLEHER’S INSPIRING STORY

One of the evening’s most poignant moments came when Anna Kelleher took the stage. A survivor of abuse, homelessness, and poverty, Kelleher shared her journey, leaving the audience in awe of her resilience and determination. As the eldest of six children, she

faced immense challenges, including domestic violence and literacy struggles. Her connection with Safe & Sound began in the late 1990s when the organization, then known as the Child Abuse Council, invited her to speak about her experiences. This opportunity became a turning point, sparking a lifelong commitment to advocacy. Today, Kelleher is pursuing her Licensed Clinical Social Worker credentials and works with San Mateo County Forensic Mental Health Services, helping individuals reintegrate into society after incarceration. She is also a certified domestic violence advocate and a proud mother. “Safe & Sound gave me a platform to share my story and inspired me to pay it forward,” Kelleher shared. “I’ve dedicated my career to supporting survivors and helping others rebuild their lives.”

BRINGING JOY TO THE HOLIDAYS: THE HOLIDAY GIFT PROGRAM

Safe & Sound’s commitment to families extends into the holiday season through its holiday gift program. From December 12-14, the organization hosted a holiday toy store at its Bayview office, providing hundreds of local children with toys, books, and clothing. Community members can contribute by selecting gifts from Safe & Sound’s Amazon gift list, ensuring that every child experiences the joy of the season.

Safe & Sound’s work underscores the transformative power of community and resilience. Whether by attending the Blue Ribbon Celebration or contributing to the holiday gift program, supporters play a critical role in advancing this mission to protect children and empower families.

The celebration drew an impressive lineup of guests, including former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, Jr., and KTVU Channel 2 newscaster Betty Yu, whose presence highlighted the community’s shared commitment to Safe & Sound’s mission.

Rieko Tsuchida, Christina Maxwell, and Sienna Peck perform at the U.S. Embassy Beijing American Center, celebrating the launch of Festival Napa Valley’s China cultural exchange

Festival Napa Valley Launches Cultural Exchange with China at US Embassy IN BEIJING and Presents Olivia Decker Power of Music Concert in Shanghai

“MUSIC, EDUCATION, CULTURE, AND WINE: THESE ARE powerful unifiers for all of us,” said Festival NapaValley President and CEO Rick Walker when he announced a multiyear artistic exchange with China. Unveiled December 6 with the signing of an MOU with Beijing Poly Theatre Management Company, which operates more than 80 theaters across China and celebratory concerts at the U.S. Embassy’s Beijing American Center and the Peninsula Shanghai, Festival Napa Valley’s China Cultural Exchange aims to foster collaboration and dialogue through music, education, food and wine events, and cultural tourism.

The signing ceremony took place at the Beijing Poly Theatre, an iconic venue symbolizing China’s rich cultural heritage. Attendees included Festival Napa Valley Vice President Charles Letourneau, Chief Sponsorship Officer Hilary Vartanian, and Executive Producer Sienna Peck. Poly Theatre’s leadership was represented by Wang Bo, chairman of Poly Culture, and Yao Rui, general manager of the Poly Theatre Management Company. “This initiative showcases how music can bridge linguistic and cultural divides, deepening understanding through shared artistic experiences,” remarked Letourneau.

Through this partnership, Festival Napa Valley will highlight Chinese artists and repertoire in its year-round programming, including a Lunar New Year celebration at The St. Regis San Francisco on February 6, featuring the Beijing Guitar Duo and a Novack Concert for Kids in Napa on February 7 with guitarist Meng Su. The 2025 summer season will feature several Chinese artists and programs, including pianist An Tianxu and a performance of the iconic “Butterfly Lovers” violin concerto on opening weekend, July 11 and 12.

In spring 2026, Festival Orchestra Napa will tour China, further solidifying the cultural bridge.

Education is a cornerstone of the exchange. Select college and preprofessional musicians from China will have the opportunity to participate in Festival Napa Valley’s summer instrumental and vocal training academies. Students selected from these programs will have the chance to join the Festival Orchestra on its spring 2026 tour in China. Additionally, a group of talented high school students from China will participate in educational and performance programs in Napa Valley during the 2025 summer season.

This initiative “showcases the power of music as a cornerstone of U.S.-China diplomacy,” remarked Colleen Altstock, Acting Deputy Consul General, U.S. Consulate Shanghai, in welcoming guests. “Music is more than just entertainment—it is a means of connection. Beyond the music, this partnership emphasizes community and cultural investment. The exchange creates a platform for artists and students to share, learn, and grow, enriching both the American and Chinese cultural landscapes. As Wray Armstrong, chairman of Armstrong Music & Arts, aptly described, this initiative is a “cultural milestone forged through music.”

“This collaboration is an important step in fostering cultural dialogue and mutual understanding between our two countries, and [it] will have a lasting impact on the artistic and educational communities in San Francisco, Napa Valley, China, and beyond,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed in a letter endorsing the initiative.

Since its inception in 2006, Festival Napa Valley has been a beacon of innovation, blending music, education, wine, and culinary arts to create transformative experiences. This new cultural exchange reflects the FNV’s commitment to global dialogue and its mission to inspire through the arts. Maestro Carlo Ponti Conducts Concert Extravaganza with Pasquale Esposito and Sophia Loren

ON NOVEMBER 22, ITALIAN TENOR PASQUALE ESPOSITO partnered with the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra led by Maestro Carlo Ponti to present a musical extravaganza at BroadStage, a contemporary performing arts presenter, located at The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center. Established in 2008, BroadStage is one of Los Angeles’ leading venues to experience daring artistic performances, energizing audiences and community through bold performances and personal connections.

The concert celebrated Sophia Loren’s 90th birthday and helped to raise funds for Esposito’s nonprofit, Notable Music and Arts Organization, and the nonprofit Los Angeles-based Virtuosi Orchestra (LAV). This unforgettable evening honored Loren’s legacy in cinema and her profound influence on Italy’s rich cultural heritage, celebrating her timeless inspiration for future generations. It paid tribute to Loren’s remarkable life and cinematic achievements. This special evening was highlighted by a magnificent concert featuring Pasquale Esposito, accompanied by the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra conducted by Maestro Carlo Ponti, the son of Sophia Loren, with enchanting melodies and captivating storytelling. It was an extraordinarily memorable evening honoring the iconic Sophia Loren, who was radiant at age 90 and graced the event with her presence at a pre-concert meet-and-greet reception.

The LAV is a dynamic ensemble devoted to the advocacy and support of music education. Founded in 2013 by Ponti, LAV was formed on the core belief that an orchestra is a unique educational resource. LAV’s 10th anniversary season kicks off with this emotional tribute to Sophia Loren’s cinematic legacy and Neapolitan roots in celebration of her 90th birthday. For information and to donate to LAV, please visit lavirtuosi.org.

Pasquale Esposito founded the Notable Music and Arts Organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity promoting music education in the spring of 2012. The organization provides music instruction to underserved students in the San Francisco Bay Area and develops and produces educational programming for public television. Esposito travels nationally to major universities and colleges, offering masterclasses in vocal technique. He also provides private instruction at his studio in San Jose, California. For more information about NMAO or to donate, visit www.notable-music.org.

Esposito was born and raised in Naples, Italy. He emigrated to the United States, winning the Green Card lottery in 1998 and pursued his passion for music by studying at San Jose State University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree where he was a distinguished alumnus in 2009. He is an international crossover recording artist, acclaimed for his pop-opera delivery of songs. Esposito has released 13 albums and four DVDs. In 2025, he is set to release two new albums: his

second full-length Christmas compilation and a new album of original compositions in the rock-opera genre.

Esposito made his debut at the San Francisco Opera in June 2015 with the premiere of Marco Tutino’s Two Women (an opera adaptation of the 1960s film La Ciociara starring Sophia Loren). The New York Times stated that Esposito sang with “airy charm” for his performance of Ragazzo del Popolo, while the San Francisco Chronicle described Esposito as “a charismatic and dulcet-toned singer.”

Esposito has partnered with PBS and produced four public television specials, starting in 2015 with Pasquale Esposito Celebrates Enrico Caruso The program was filmed in the historic Castello Giusso in Vico Equense on the Amalfi Coast. He was accompanied by the Orchestra Santa Chiara conducted by Maestro Renato Serio. The “docu-concert” pays homage to Caruso by taking the audience on a musical journey in Italy, highlighting the life, career, and songs that made Caruso an international star. Maestro Placido Domingo collaborated in the program with an intimate interview. The PBS special, coupled with a current live touring version, had over 220 million potential viewers. A CD, DVD, and Bluray of the program were also made available.

In spring 2018, Esposito released his second public TV special on PBS: Pasquale Esposito Celebrates Italian Piazzas. Esposito was accompanied by the Orchestra Talenti Napoletani conducted by Maestro Adriano Peninno. This docu-concert is a unique musical journey of culture, art, and tradition where Esposito dedicates a song to each of the beautiful piazzas (squares) performed in the prestigious Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, Italy. A live concert version of the program followed with a 2018/2019 national tour. In 2020, Esposito filmed two more PBS specials in Naples, Italy at the historic Teatro Politeama. The first was a Christmas special, In the Spirit of Christmas (released in 2020) conducted by Maestro Adriano Peninno, and the second was a special titled Il Tempo (Time) conducted by Maestro Ettore Gatta. Pasquale was accompanied in both programs by the Orchestra Talenti Napoletani. Il Tempo was released in March 2021.

An Evening On Opera Stage FundRaising Gala 2024

SAN FRANCISCO OPERA GUILD’S AN EVENING ON THE Stage gala dinner celebrated the Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Emerita of the U.S. House of Representatives, and her husband, Paul Pelosi, on Monday, November 18, at the War Memorial Opera House. The honorees received the Crescendo Award, bestowed by the guild upon individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary support to the guild and San Francisco Opera.

“Over the more than a century of the San Francisco Opera’s existence, Paul and I have had the privilege of attending 52 opening nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary,” Nancy Pelosi said. “We are honored to receive the Crescendo Award because opera has always been unifying, bringing people together—and we believe the arts will save us. Our celebration of the opera and the arts reminds us that, despite whatever is happening in the world, human connection and human creativity endure.”

Paul and Nancy Pelosi have long been dedicated champions of the arts in San Francisco, supporting a diverse range of local organizations. From fine art museums to theater companies and film festivals to dance companies, they are often found supporting San Francisco’s world class artistic community. This year’s An Evening on the Stage celebrates their unwavering commitment to San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Opera Guild.

The Pelosis have not only been faithful attendees of San Francisco Opera performances, but they also regularly participate in events like

the Opera Ball and An Evening on the Stage, demonstrating their deep dedication to the arts in our community. Through their generous contributions and tireless advocacy, they have played a crucial role in ensuring the arts continue to thrive in San Francisco.

Guided by her belief that “the arts will bring us together,” Pelosi has actively championed arts funding at the federal level, emphasizing that a great nation must prioritize cultural development alongside other essential investments. Her efforts have been instrumental in safeguarding and advancing the arts, ensuring that future generations can thrive creatively. In 2010, Speaker Pelosi received the Congressional Arts Leadership Award for her advocacy, particularly in securing funding to protect nonprofit arts jobs during the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Most recently, in 2023, she announced nearly $1.4 million in federal grants for 57 organizations in San Francisco through the National Endowment for the Arts, including a leadership gift to San Francisco Opera for the premiere of Omar, a groundbreaking work by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels.

Paul Pelosi has also been a vital supporter of the arts through his service as a trustee of the War Memorial & Performing Arts Center. In this role, he has worked to uplift the cultural heart of the city as one of the world’s great artistic campuses. He has been tireless in his participation in the life and health of the campus and in the resident companies: San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, and San Francisco Ballet.

Speaker Pelosi has often shared her belief that the three most important issues facing Congress are “our children, our children, our children.” This has been her “why” in public service. When she was sworn in as Speaker of the House and called the House to order, she said she did so, “for the children.” This unwavering value has given her strength throughout her political career and has kept the future generations of our country at the forefront of her focus.

Nancy and Paul Pelosi have directly supported the San Francisco Opera Guild’s music and arts education programs, providing invaluable opportunities for aspiring artists and K-12 students throughout the Greater Bay Area. They continue to support these vital programs which nurture creativity, foster academic achievement, and promote personal growth for students of all backgrounds.

Now in its 11th year, the black-tie benefit presented by San Francisco Opera Guild offered 250 guests the opportunity to dine on the historic War Memorial Opera House stage, where, since 1932, operatic legends like Luciano Pavarotti, Leontyne Price, and Renée Fleming have performed. The evening’s décor included set pieces from Bizet’s Carmen, a production by Francesca Zambello.

Co-chaired by Ginny Ziegler and Olivia Decker, An Evening on the Stage included a cocktail reception in the War Memorial Opera House foyer followed by dinner, musical performances, presentation of the 2024 Crescendo Award, and dancing on the opera house stage. Musical guests included current San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow soprano Caroline Corrales, former Adler Fellows tenor Moisés Salazar, and pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg performing Pedro Elías Gutiérrez’s “Alma Llanera,”

“Casta diva” from Bellini’s Norma, “A Tribute to Caruso,” “O soave fanciulla” from Puccini’s La Bohème, and “America the Beautiful.” Event stylist and frequent Opera Ball designer J. Riccardo Benavides reunited with the San Francisco Opera Guild for this event, and McCalls Catering & Events crafted a sumptuous dinner. Renowned guitarist Freddy Clarke provided Spanish flamenco music, adding ambiance to the Carmen stage, and the band, Vybe Society, performed for dancing after dinner.

Co-chair Ginny Cartwright Ziegler remarked, “An Evening on the Stage is life-changing for those who experience it and for K-12 students in the Bay Area. The event blends the magic of dining on the opera house stage, the artistry of gifted performers, and the joy of sharing a passion for music and arts education. We are delighted to shine the spotlight on longtime arts advocates Nancy and Paul Pelosi. Our organization is full of gratitude for their work, and we thank all the Guild’s supporters for recognizing opera’s power to give voice to potential, helping students become more confident, collaborative and compassionate.”

Co-chair Olivia Decker added, “An Evening on the Stage has become a favorite event of San Francisco Opera Guild patrons. Not only do we raise funds for the guild’s education and outreach programs for Bay Area schools and young talented opera singers, but we also honor one of our top contributors and supporters each year. This year’s honorees, Nancy and Paul Pelosi, are long-standing supporters of opera and education programs for our community. I firmly believe that music unites people, inspires our spirits, heals our souls, and builds a better world for all ages and nationalities.”

San Francisco Opera Guild President Courtney Labe said, “The Guild’s cherished annual event, An Evening on the Stage, helps Bay Area students experience our award-winning education programs. Through the generous community of supporters and the dedication of our teaching artists, the guild’s programs foster greater cultural understanding while sparking creativity in the hearts and minds of children across the Bay Area. We are thrilled to honor Nancy and Paul Pelosi, and we thank them for being champions of the arts.”

Guests at the special event included San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock; San Francisco Opera Association President Jack Calhoun and Board Chair Barbara Wolfe; past honorary chair and past honoree Diane B. Wilsey; Lieutenant Governor of the State of California Eleni Kounalakis; Chief of Protocol for San Francisco Maryam Muduroglu; president of the board of trustees of the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center Tom Horn; San Francisco Opera Company sponsor Maria Manetti Shrem; and past stage dinner honorees Carol and Dixon Doll, Pitch Johnson, John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn, Karen J. Kubin, Mary and Bill Poland, and Jake Heggie.

Shilvock said, “Speaker and Paul Pelosi have such a passionate devotion to keeping arts at the center of this great city, and they have both uplifted the cultural fabric of San Francisco and of the nation in many deep and profound ways. It is very fitting that the San Francisco Opera Guild is recognizing the Pelosis at An Evening on the Stage this year, celebrating their vitally important championship of the arts in America.”

Tickets for An Evening on the Stage event were priced from $2,500 through $10,000. Proceeds support San Francisco Opera Guild’s innovative education programs which reach thousands of students in Greater Bay Area schools.

An Evening on the Stage is made possible through the generous support of presenting sponsor TriplePoint Capital; event sponsors Five Star Bank, Neiman Marcus, and Pearson; wine sponsors Castellucci Napa Valley and Scharffenberger Cellars; and media sponsors Haute Living, San Francisco and Nob Hill Gazette. Global Women Asia Fellows and Board at the Women-In-STEM Groundbreakers event

Women Leaders from Asia Present Groundbreakers Award

A GLOBAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH THE MISSION TO spotlight global leaders with Asian perspectives, Global Women Asia hosted its inaugural Women-in-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Groundbreakers Award at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View on November 9, 2024.

”Global leaders with Asian perspectives are not based on race or ethnicity. It’s about the experience and perspectives,” explained co-founder and chairwoman Wenchi Yu, whose career spans government, nonprofit, business, and media sectors. “We are committed to enhancing understanding and interconnectedness between Asia and the world and to elevating the voices and perspectives of Asia.”

Women-in-STEM honorees include categories of impact, leadership, citizenship, and community. Neeru Khosla, co-founder of CK-12 Foundation, was awarded the Impact Award for promoting AI in education. Khosla thanked her husband, Vinod Khosla, for his encouragement and support and her team for their commitment to bringing education to over 300 million students around the world through technology and AI.

In accepting the award, Khosla shared her love for education and how her upbringing in India inspired the CK-12 Foundation’s mission to improve access to critical learning resources. Today, her organization is leveraging AI technology to build a human-like tutor, Flexi, to keep students interested and engaged in STEM subjects.

The award was presented by GWA’s 2024 Women-in-STEM Fellows, Monica M. Chan, EdD, Sarah Tong, and Irina Sthapit.

Global Women Asia awarded the Groundbreaker Citizenship Award to Mastercard, in recognition of their Girls4Tech STEM program. Tara Nathan, founder of Mastercard®’s Community Pass, accepted the award on behalf of the company, noting, “We’ve grown to be the largest program focused on girls in STEM, reaching about 7 million girls in over 64 countries and territories.”

Nathan shared how “doing well by doing good” through technology is core to Mastercard’s DNA. In addition to highlighting Mastercard’s signature Girls4Tech initiative, a program that inspires

girls to build their technology skills, Mastercard also supports smallholderfarmers in remote and rural communities through a digital ecosystem through Community Pass.

The award was presented by GWA’s 2024 Women-in-STEM Fellows, NashinMahtani, and Van Tran.

Dr. Telle Whitney, co-founder of the famed Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing, presented Global Women Asia’s Groundbreaker Community Award to Huma Hamid and Farah Ali of Pakistani Women in Computing (PWiC), a global diaspora network of Pakistani women engineers, for supporting each other’s professional and career growth.

In accepting the award, Huma made this dedication: “This award represents every young woman who dared to dream, seek learning and growth despite challenges, and every ally who stood by our side and supported our vision to connect, learn, and grow together. It’s a celebration of resilience, courage, and community, proving that when women with a vision rise, they lift entire communities with them.”

Global Women Asia presented the Groundbreaker Leadership Award to Professor Nancy Ip, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). In her acceptance speech, Professor IP said, “Receiving the award motivates me even more to continue pushing boundaries and striving for excellence.”

Professor Ip started her career as a neuroscientist, focusing on discovering a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Being an educator brings her immense satisfaction because she believes “it is a privilege to teach and mentor young people.” By nurturing their interest in science, empowering them to overcome challenges, and helping them recognize their potential, she aims to shape the future of scientific discovery and innovation. Professor Ip hopes her journey as ascientist inspires future generations, especially young women, to pursue their passions with determination and strive for excellence to make a difference.

In a panel discussion on AI, technology and education, “Keeping children engaged and interested in learning so they don’t drop out is half of the work done,” remarked Khosla, whose organization

has benefited over 300 million students around the world. Nathan noted, “When we support smallholder farmers in remote and rural communities, we are supporting small businesses and creating economic opportunity for them through technology.”

As a key male ally, Dr. Chenming Hu of University of California, Berkeley, recipient of the National Medal of Science and Technology in 2016 and the inventor of FinFET, the technology breakthrough that changed the semiconductor industry, gave a visionary talk on the future opportunities and constraints of AI technology, semiconductors, and energy use. Dr. Hu also demystified the need to be good at math to succeed in STEM. “If you like any math, science, or computer classes, there is room for you in STEM.”

The Groundbreakers Award ceremony also concluded GWA’s 2024 Women-in-STEM Fellowship program. This new cohort of fellows is comprised of promising women leaders from around the world who came to the San Francisco Bay Area earlier the week before for a three-day leadership program.

Global Women Asia launched its flagship fellowship program as part of the APEC summit hosted by the United States in San Francisco in November 2023. Its flagship fellowship program, targeting high-potential young women leaders of 25-35 from around the world, has a different focus each year. From 2023’s sustainability to 2024’s women in STEM, 25 fellows from more than 20 countries and territories have gone through the leadership program. As the U.S.’s top government female leader of Asian descent, Vice President Kamala Harris, lent her support to Global Women Asia.

In 2025, Global Women Asia will focus on women in health innovation. “We look for nominations of outstanding fellows from around the world, role models, as well as honorees who exemplify global leaders with Asian perspectives. Stay tuned for more information,” shared Ker Gibbs, an advisor to Global Women Asia.

Luxury and Legacy

Wilkes Bashford opens new California flagship store

ON A COOL NOVEMBER EVENING, I STEPPED INTO THE NEW FLAGSHIP store of Wilkes Bashford and was greeted by the warm smile of Andrew Mitchell. Unaware of my role for the night—covering the grand opening for this publication—Mitchell introduced himself with genuine enthusiasm, eager to show me around. As my friend Susie and I engaged with our gracious host, our exploration began, delving into the captivating legacy of the Mitchell family and their commitment to delivering luxury service to a discerning clientele. Nestled in the Stanford Shopping Center, Wilkes Bashford unveiled its stunning, 25,000-square-foot space, a replacement for the beloved location that catered to fashion enthusiasts for over two decades. This momentous occasion not only signifies a new chapter but also marks a significant evolution in a brand that embodies luxury and bespoke shopping.

Wilkes Bashford, part of the esteemed Mitchell Stores portfolio, has long been a pioneer in elevating the retail experience. The store’s new design, crafted by the renowned San Francisco architectural firm Gensler, embraces the Italian coastal aesthetic with its airy, light-filled interiors and natural materials. This thoughtful design pays homage to California’s iconic coastlines while seamlessly blending modern luxury with classic elegance.

Andrew Mitchell, a member of the fourth-generation Mitchell family, emphasizes the importance of crafting a shopping experience that resonates with the community. “Shopping should be experiential,” he remarks. “We believe that luxury shoppers are looking for more than just merchandise; they want a connection to the legacy of the brands they choose.” This sentiment is deeply rooted in the Mitchell family’s philosophy which centers on relationship building and personalized service—a hallmark of the Wilkes Bashford experience.

Founded by fashion icon Wilkes Bashford in 1966, the brand has always been about more than just clothing; it’s about nurturing relationships that span generations. As Mitchell recalls, “My grandfather shopped here, my father

shopped here, and now I’m shopping here. It’s the legacy of being a business that is multi-brand.” The new flagship store celebrates this rich history and boasts over 41 designer collections from celebrated names like Valentino, Bottega Veneta®, and Thom Browne, among others.

The bespoke shopping opportunities at Wilkes Bashford are unparalleled, with personalized styling sessions led by expert style advisors who are dedicated to curating the perfect wardrobe for each client. The spacious upstairs private VIP suite, complete with a living room feel and a full kitchen, allows customers to enjoy a day of luxury shopping in comfort. Enchanting Winter Wonderland at The Meritage Resort & Spa in Napa

THE NEWLY RENOVATED MERITAGE RESORT & SPA DRAWS THOUSANDS of people from the Bay Area and beyond during their beloved Merry Meritage holiday season, running November 2024 through January 11, 2025.

Guests glide across the holiday rink, enjoy private igloos and firepit experiences, and delight in a flurry of snow from their snow machine. “Bringing holiday magic to our resort was essential. We wanted to offer a welcoming place where families and friends can come together to celebrate the season and create cherished memories,” said Joe Leinacker, managing director at The Meritage Resort & Spa.

For those who love to toast the season, Santa’s Tavern returned with its signature hot toddies, festive cocktails, and merry mocktails, offering a cozy retreat after a day of skating.

The Meritage Resort & Spa’s annual tree lighting ceremony was held on Saturday, November 23, drawing more than a thousand attendees. As part of the spirit of giving, guests were encouraged to bring a toy to donate to Toys for Tots, spreading holiday cheer to those in need. The festivities also included an artisan market where guests shopped for locally made gifts, such as handmade jewelry, candles, chocolates, and more.

The grand finale—a sparkling illumination of the resort’s towering, 40-foot tree accompanied by falling “snow”—captured the season’s magic. The first “Merry Meritage On Ice” ice skating performance, hosted by the Redwood Ice Theatre Company, featured appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Cinderella, Moana, Tiana, and other beloved characters.

“From live music and artisan markets to gourmet seasonal dining and familyfriendly activities, there’s a unique blend of relaxation and festivity waiting for everyone. Merry Meritage has become a highlight of our calendar, and we’re committed to enhancing the experience to bring even more joy and holiday spirit to our guests next year,” said Leinacker.

The Meritage Resort & Spa offers a range of accommodations, including 322 newly transformed guest rooms, a refreshed lobby, an expanded bar area, and revamped ballrooms. The resort’s exciting updates include a newly opened Ember Steak and the Sora Napa Champagne lounge, providing guests with exclusive culinary experiences.

In 2025, Build and Protect Your Muscles

Getting plenty of quality protein is key.

WHILE YOU MAY NOT BE A BODYBUILDER OR SERIOUS ATHLETE, your muscles are important for a long and healthy life. How you take care of them may determine your eventual fate as you age. Besides avoiding an older adulthood of frailty, muscles do more than we might think. They enhance metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity, and protect against type 2 diabetes. Strong muscles are fueled by consuming quality dietary protein along with strength (resistance) training and adequate calorie consumption.

As we flock to the gym post-holiday, New Year’s resolutions in tow, we should focus our efforts more on health than vanity as we seek to get into shape, whether that be shedding a few pounds and/or increasing our physical activity. Just eating less food to lose weight or doing any random exercise, however, may not help you achieve the benefits you want when it comes to building muscle. What we eat and how we train ensures we do not lose strength and muscle in the process.

To achieve optimal improvements in muscle mass and strength requires a balanced program of strength training and a diet packed with quality protein. Strength training really deserves its own article, so here for the sake of space and simplicity, let us tackle protein. Historically, an obsession with dietary protein intake was mostly the domain of weight lifters. For the rest of us, the subject was confusing and filled with contradictory information around frequent questions such as: how much protein do we need, what kind of

protein should we choose, and when should we eat it? The answers impact our overall training results, health, and longevity.

Protein supports many functions in the body, particularly the building and maintenance of muscle, which we can, without intervention and determination, slowly lose as we age. But if you are not in older adulthood yet, why be concerned now? The bad news is that loss of skeletal muscle starts early and happens slowly—without our noticing. It pays to be preemptive and start with a good baseline. “Beginning around age 50, we can lose up to 1% of our muscle mass as well as a loss of strength up to 3% annually. Without strength training intervention, this pace can accelerate to a 4% loss of strength annually by age 75.” Too, extended bedrest due to a temporary illness, injury, or hospitalization may accelerate muscle loss, even in younger individuals, in as little as two to three weeks (although younger adults recover and regain muscle much better). This is yet another reason to build muscle reserves—think of it as a muscle savings account.

WHY DOES MUSCLE MASS MATTER?

Losing too much muscle mass eventually results in frailty and a condition known as sarcopenia, defined as the gradual and progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. Avoiding a future of frailty should provide a strong motivator as this condition can lead to suffering and take a toll on your future quality of life (and, in aggregate, our society as a whole). The mortality rate of older adults with sarcopenia is 41% higher than those without sarcopenia (Koon Yee-Lee et al. 2021)—not to mention their disability and suffering—and the estimated cost of just hospitalizations in the U.S. in individuals with sarcopenia was estimated at $40.4 billion (Goates et al. 2019). There are currently no recommended drug treatments for sarcopenia.

According to an article and study published in the American Journal of Nutrition that pooled data from 16,155 individuals aged 20 to 93, “Increased muscle mass is associated with a 30% reduction in early mortality risk.”

WHY IS IT HARDER TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN MUSCLE MASS AS WE AGE?

As we age, we have what is called reduced anabolic resistance to protein intake versus when we were younger, making it harder for us to build muscle from protein. In other words, we are not able to utilize the protein we eat to build muscle as well as when we were younger. Authors Paulussen, McKenna, and Beals in NIH’s Frontiers in Nutrition describe it physiologically as “a blunted stimulation of muscle protein synthesis rates (MPS) to common anabolic stimuli in skeletal muscle tissue such as dietary protein and exercise. … Ultimately, the blunted responsiveness of MPS to dietary protein and exercise underpins the loss of the amount and quality of skeletal muscle mass leading to decrements in physical performance.”

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO WE NEED?

Many of us do not get enough protein due to a variety of reasons. Older individuals may experience a loss of taste and smell (which may decline with age), influencing appetite, Too, motivation to cook and pay attention to daily diet requirements often decreases for those of all ages who live alone. Then, there is the easy convenience of take-out and processed food which is frequently filled with empty calories. Hectic schedules and busy careers leave little time to prepare meals from scratch. And weight loss diets sometimes do not provide enough protein to prevent muscle wasting while shedding pounds.

So, how much protein do we need? A study conducted by Traylor, Gorissen, and Phillips published in Advances in Nutrition cited “the Dietary Reference Intakes set the protein RDA (recommended daily allowance) for persons older than 19 y[ears] of age at 0.8 g[rams] protein per kg (kilogram) (or 0.36 grams per pound) of body weight.” (One kilogram (kg) equals 2.2 pounds, and converters are online.) “However, a growing body of evidence suggests, that this protein RDA may be inadequate for older individuals.” Some think reduced anabolic resistance in older adults suggests they may need “up to double the amount of protein in a single meal” than younger adults do.

Even in younger individuals, some experts view the standard RDA as inadequate, suggesting that “1.2-1.6 grams of protein per kg (kilogram) of body weight daily (or 0.54.-0.72 grams per pound.)” is more appropriate. While “evenly distributing protein across meals may be ideal, (20-25 g[rams] of high-quality protein per meal; 20-30 g[rams] for older adults),” recent studies show even consuming a large amount of protein such as “100 grams after exercise elicited a robust and prolonged anabolic response.” Historically, there has been “an assumption the body cannot use more than 20-25 grams at a time.” The net-net here is that “total daily protein is more critical than precise distribution.”

Critically, “the often-cited potential negative effects of consuming higher protein intakes on renal and bone health are without a conclusive scientific foundation in healthy humans without pre-existing kidney disease.”

WHAT KIND OF PROTEIN SHOULD WE EAT?

When selecting protein foods, factors like digestibility, plant or animal protein, and amino acid composition (complete versus incomplete) are considerations and determine a protein’s quality.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. There are 20 our bodies need in all. Eleven are called nonessential amino acids because we can make them ourselves. The other nine must be obtained from food, and these are called essential amino acids. You may have heard food protein being categorized as “complete proteins” (contains all the essential amino acids) versus “incomplete proteins” (contains some but not all the essential amino acids).

Animal proteins (including eggs and dairy) contain a complete amino acid protein combination, providing all the essential amino acids. Plant proteins (except for tofu, edamame, tempeh, and miso), on the other hand, tend to be incomplete, so a larger quantity and diversification of total protein sources are needed to achieve complementary amino acid profiles (protein combining) to get all nine essential amino acids. Vegans must eat a variety of legumes, nuts seeds, whole grains, and vegetables during the day to balance complementary amino acid profiles to obtain the required essential amino acids. Also, “supplementing with plant-based protein isolates or concentrates” may help vegans and vegetarians reach their protein goals. Supplementing with whey may be “particularly effective in stimulating MPS and casein offers a prolonged release of amino acids that sustain MPS over time.”

The study by Traylor, Gorissen, and Phillips further proposed “that it should be recommended that older individuals place an emphasis on the intake of the amino acid leucine, which plays a central role in stimulating skeletal muscle anabolism.”

Katsanos et al. showed “that a mixture of all EEAs (essential amino acids) with leucine content at 1.7 g[rams] stimulated MPS (muscle protein synthesis) in younger adults; however, this response was not observed in the older adults. When leucine content was increased to 2.8 g[rams] there was an observed increase in MPS rates in the older adults.”

While leucine triggers this process, “all essential amino acids are needed to sustain MPS for four to six hours,” hence the importance of a balanced diet with adequate quality protein intake.

WHEN SHOULD WE EAT PROTEIN?

Recent studies have shown “no meaningful difference between pre- and post-exercise protein intake.” In fact, the anabolic window once thought to be limited to a 30-minute to 2-hour post-exercise period where muscle protein synthesis is elevated, research now indicates that muscle protein synthesis “remains significantly heightened for up to 24 hours after exercise.”

EXERCISE AND PROTEIN: A DYNAMIC DUO.

While a sedentary lifestyle exacerbates anabolic resistance, the good news is exercise does just the opposite. One study showed “older adults can even achieve the muscle anabolic response of younger individuals when protein is consumed after exercise.”

Some longevity experts believe high protein diets lead to accelerated aging and cancer. However, this is unfounded in studies with healthy humans. A high protein diet, when combined with exercise, “directs growth factors (like IGF-1) and proteins (like mTOR) toward beneficial functions” rather than nonbeneficial ones like “promoting the survival of precancerous cells potentially raising cancer risk. Exercise fundamentally alters how IGF-1 behaves in the body.”

Exercise and a quality protein diet go hand in hand.

CONCLUSION

When checking off those 2025 New Year’s resolutions, make a goal of building and keeping your muscles in good shape. Your future self will thank you. Wishing you a healthy and active aging journey!

Aubrey About Town

Velveteen Forest

A magical afternoon

PHOTOS DREW ALTIZER PHOTOGRAPHY

LYING JUST BEYOND THE MANOR GATES, THE VELVETEEN FOREST lures the curious to explore its woodland enchantments.

With props being built (yes, I built a fireplace, y’all!) and deliveries of various décor to San Francisco’s Neiman Marcus, the store was all abuzz about the over-the-top soiree I was planning next. As hints unfolded, it quickly became the talk of the town and grew to a much-anticipated afternoon. For those guests who attended the first Velveteen Forest luncheon the year before, the excitement for the afternoon and finding the perfect outlet soon became a sport—but more of that later.

First, let me take you back to the very beginning!

It was Monday, the day after my Southern-themed Yellow Social Sunday brunch last May. I was sitting at my usual table (aka, the office) at The Rotunda, Neiman Marcus’ iconic restaurant in San Francisco, typing away on my laptop over a hot bowl of lobster bisque while working on the press release and recap of Sunday’s event when, suddenly, San Francisco’s former mayor, Willie L. Brown, Jr., dapperly dressed with a determined expression and grinning from ear to ear, came rushing in a beeline toward me. “What a party, the décor, the food, everything! That was your best one yet!” WB proclaimed.

“Even better than Elysian Dream?” I reiterated. Elysian Dream was my birthday party last March for which we transformed Neiman Marcus’ posh Penthouse on Five into an over-the-top ancient Grecian fantasy. Not listening to a single word I said, he continued, “Wow, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it, and I think you should make it an annual thing.”

Hailing from Mineola, Texas, I knew the Southern cuisine and aesthetic would resonate that genteel nostalgia of the South in him. Though a proud Californian, his heartstrings are still woven into the Southern tapestry.

He went on to say, “It should be the official event that inaugurates all summer parties! And then you should kick off the Thanksgiving and holiday season with that one with all the owls and branches!”

“Do you mean Velveteen Forest with the little woodland creatures?” I asked.

“Yes, that one!” He was very convincing in pleading his case, but honestly, WB was on to something!

Later that afternoon when I got home, Ed asked how my day was and whom I saw, and I mentioned I had a lovely visit with former Mayor Brown. I conveyed his brilliant suggestion, and Ed’s eyes lit up. He agreed with Willie, “I was thinking the same thing!”

So, the thought was born, and in between hosting the rest of our summer soirees, the planning of the second annual Velveteen Forest luncheon started.

To bring the second annual Velveteen Forest into fruition, I knew I had to think big from the start. That meant topping the previous year by creating grand visual statements. The vibe: an elegantly well-kept English manor and its woodsy estate grounds full of vivid autumnal colors. The goal was simple: to immerse guests through enchanted English autumn woodlands and into a stately dining room of the manor house.

Guests made their way through a nine-foot-tall iron estate gate adorned with perched forest quail, garlands of fall leaves, and a metal sign I had made in Bulgaria by Fran Johnson House that read “Velveteen Forest” in gold over the gate’s capital to welcome curious wanderers into the forest and for memorable photo ops to mark the occasion.

As the chic partygoers arrived, they did not disappoint, taking to the theme in their stunning ensembles. Among the glamorous, were Tracy Chen in Christian Dior, a heather gray tea dress accented with a black leather saddle-style belt and opera gloves, and her husband, Tom Schoenherr, in head-to-toe Hermès; Sonya Molodetskaya in a floral sequined dress, proving glitter means glamour, and her partner, Willie Brown, impeccably dressed in his favorite Isaia. With an eye for detail, couture designer Vasily Vein designed a pair of English wool trousers for the host, moi, pairing it with a blush beige silk Valentino shirt and matching shoes.

Guests were greeted with French champagne, refreshing cranberry Grand Marnier highballs, and specially curated, cozy, maple-spiced bourbon old fashioned cocktails in an hour-long cocktail reception, enjoying the fête and snapping more photos while sitting on chic iron fleurs de lis arbor benches dressed in comfy burnt sienna cushions, weeping willow branches, and fall leaves to complement the iron gate.

As lunch was announced and guests made their way to their seats, they were warmed and enchanted by the walls draped in lush, burnt sienna, orange velvet, and a working white and gold gilded Beaux-Arts

style fireplace. Built-in bookcases flanking the hearth displayed book collections by Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. G. Wells, and the Brontё sisters, to name a few. A stunning arrangement of flowers and fruit by talented farmer and florist Bonnie Lummis (who also created the exquisite table centerpieces and flowers for the luncheon), ornate 27-inch white porcelain urns, and garland decorated the top of the fireplace’s mantlepiece. Towering, 10-foot Japanese maple trees canopied the room.

Elegant moss green and white pheasant-patterned linen from the U.K.’s fabulous MrsAlice.com draped the 24-foot table. The tablescape’s hotel silver service ware; gravy boats and silver candelabras; decorative urns; whimsical owls, pheasants, rabbits, and squirrels; and charming velvet mushrooms (another MrsAlice.com find) added whimsy to the elegant setting.

In keeping with the opulent afternoon, guests dined on herb roasted turkey with pan gravy, my Grand Marnier cranberry relish, spiralcut HoneyBaked® ham with assorted mustards, cornbread and spicy sausage stuffing, truffled vegetable medley (haricot vert, brussels sprouts, artichoke, asparagus, and julienned red peppers), candied yams (toasted meringue, brown sugar, and pecans), and whipped potatoes with chives. Guests further indulged their appetites with a selection of sweets from the two dessert carts offering apple, pumpkin, mixed berry, and pecan pies; chocolate, carrot, and lemon passionfruit cakes; and cranberry-apple frangipane tarts from San Francisco’s iconic Noe Valley Bakery, which also made the scrumptious challah dinner rolls that were served with cranberry butter, a take on Neiman Marcus’ strawberry butter.

The afternoon’s attendees included hosts Aubrey Brewster and Dr. Edward Winger; former San Francisco mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. and his partner, socialite and fashion icon Sonya Molodetskaya; David Shimmon and wife, socialite Mary Beth Shimmon; Nob Hill Gazette’s associate publisher, Jill Pietrowiak; Lin Huber, vice president and general manager of Neiman Marcus; couture/fashion designer Vasily Vein and his husband, Alex Axel-Vein; KTVU/Fox2 anchor Betty Yu; Heide Betz; Gary Love; ABC7 anchor (retired) Carolyn Tyler; real estate mogul Victor Makras; socialite Clara Shayevich; Bacca DaSilva; Tom Schoenherr and his wife, socialite Tracy Chen; founder Look model agency Marie Christine Kollock; luxury realtor Joel Goodrich; Navid Armstrong; Liz Curtis; David Millstein and his wife, Andrea “Ondee” Millstein; Katrina Parlato, The Rotunda’s general manager; Annemarie Conroy; and Teresa Rodriguez, president of Liberté Press.

San Francisco, I am often asked how I come up with the editorial angles that offer a unique perspective into the world of food and wine. For this particular piece, the answer started 21 years ago. Now that my son, Lukas, recently attained drinking age, we wanted to celebrate this milestone with not just a “Las Vegas” birthday celebration, but more of an introduction on how to now dine well. Selecting one of Las Vegas’ most recent additions, we went to stay at Fontainebleau.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Fontainebleau stands as a beacon of opulence and culinary innovation. With 36 first-to-market restaurants and bars, the resort is not just a visual masterpiece but also a gastronomic destination reshaping the dining landscape in the city. Central to this culinary transformation is a seamless collaboration between chefs and sommeliers, elevating dining into an extraordinary experience. During our exploration, we had the privilege of speaking with Kevin Reilly, the director of wine and spirits at Fontainebleau, who shared insights into this collaborative spirit and the philosophy behind their exceptional wine program.

At Fontainebleau, the bond between sommeliers and chefs is deeply rooted in collaboration, communication, and shared

HAUTE COUTURE AND CAVIAR MAY SEEM LIKE UNLIKELY companions, but they share striking similarities going beyond their association with luxury. Just as haute couture represents the pinnacle of craftsmanship and artistry in the fashion world, caviar embodies the epitome of culinary refinement. Both are synonymous with elegance, exclusivity, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Few delicacies evoke the same level of opulence and fascination as caviar. From the shimmering pearls to the delicate burst of flavor, caviar has long been hailed as the epitome of culinary refinement and luxury. Among the esteemed purveyors of this exquisite delight, Haute Caviar Company stands out as a champion of ethical sourcing, sustainability, and uncompromising quality. experiences. Reilly explains, “We foster a culture of collaboration where we encourage chefs and sommeliers to taste wine and food together.” This hands-on approach not only enhances professional growth but also nurtures a profound understanding of the intricacies involved in both crafts. Through organized tasting sessions, teams delve into cooking techniques, regional cuisines, and cultural influences, culminating in remarkable food and wine pairings that delight the palate.

finer things in life, are we now seeing caviar on so many menus and not just for special occasions? “When enjoying caviar, you know it’s meant to be a special occasion,” says Suppes. Like couture, you are wearing the absolute best, and with caviar, it sets the tone for luxury. Most recently on a lunch date with her son, Michael Suppes, at the The Village Pub, they dined on caviar and champagne. It’s not just a collectors’ thing, it’s a mindset of wanting to indulge in the very best, no matter one’s age.

AS A WINEGROWER AND WINEMAKER MYSELF IN KNIGHTS Valley, Sonoma County, I am always looking to support local wineries when dining out. Whether in Silicon Valley or Napa Valley, I do my best to select unique, exceptional wines to support my wine community. When I travel abroad, it’s all about the local fare. When in Italy, I look for the best Barolo; in Spain, a Rioja Gran Reserva; and when in France—where do I start?—a Blanc de Blanc Champagne or a hidden gem of a Bordeaux. So, when dining locally, I drink locally.

On our first evening, we stepped into the enchanting ambiance of Don’s Prime, where mid-century glamour effortlessly intertwines with contemporary culinary artistry. The exclusive steak program, featuring meticulously selected cuts of beef, was nothing short of extraordinary—each bite practically melted in our mouths, especially when paired with a robust red from their impressive wine list which started with a Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Barolo Riserva 1955. It was a celebration of flavors that only a luxury property like Fontainebleau could deliver. A standout moment of our dining experience was our white truffle dinner, an exquisite culinary event that showcased the talents of chef Patrick Munster. Inspired by Kevin Reilly’s recent travels to Piedmont, Italy, this regional pairing menu

To deliver the very best, Lisa Simon, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for the finer things in life, founded the Haute Caviar Company which has become synonymous with excellence in the industry. Simon’s journey began as a young restaurateur in New York, managing two of the largest champagne and caviar bars in the United States while completing her college degree. It was during this time that her fascination with caviar was ignited, laying the foundation for her future endeavors.

Reilly’s ambitious vision for the wine program at Fontainebleau aims to surpass any other wine program in the United States. “Our wine program was built to showcase the world’s greatest wines and most renowned wine regions,” he states. This commitment is reflected in a carefully curated wine list that promises to achieve accolades and recognition within the next three years.

While Napa Valley holds a special place in the program, Reilly asserts that regions like Burgundy and Champagne are equally pivotal. This diverse selection, such as the exclusive Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru ‘Clos de la Boudriotte’ Rouge and the Salon Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut 1997, will surely guarantee guests access to an array of wines that enrich their dining experiences, providing a taste of both local and international terroirs.

As my family continued to celebrate Lukas’ 21st birthday, we embarked on a culinary odyssey through Fontainebleau’s impressive offerings, reveling in the artistry of its renowned chefs and the magic of thoughtfully curated wine pairings.

Our journey took us to Chyna Club, where eclectic Chinese cuisine takes center stage, masterminded by Alan Yau. The cozy atmosphere set the tone for an unforgettable culinary adventure. Each dish was a delightful surprise, combining familiar flavors with daring presentations. Trust me and try the clear infused Bloody Mary. There is nothing like it!

For an extraordinary culinary experience, we dined at ITO, an omakase restaurant perched on the top floor of Fontainebleau. With a mere 12 seats, it offers an intimate setting that distinguishes it from any other omakase experience in Las Vegas. Reilly notes that the meticulous attention to detail and the quality of the fish program make it one of the finest in the country. “Guests are left with a memory they won’t soon forget,” he says, and it was easy for us to see why.

Our culinary adventure continued at Komodo, where Southeast Asian flavors and a lively atmosphere combined to create a memorable dining experience. The Peking duck stood out, expertly prepared and harmoniously paired with refreshing cocktail aptly named Fortunes Told.

As Fontainebleau Las Vegas continues to redefine luxury hospitality, the collaboration between chefs and sommeliers, along with a meticulously curated wine program, ensures that each dining experience transcends mere sustenance—it becomes a celebration of flavors, culture, and creativity. Whether indulging in an intimate omakase at ITO, enjoying a lavish steak dinner at Don’s Prime, or commemorating a milestone birthday with family, the culinary team’s commitment to excellence is palpable in every bite and sip. For those seeking a culinary adventure on the Las Vegas Strip, Fontainebleau stands as a premier destination where luxury and flavor intertwine seamlessly. Cheers to unforgettable experiences!

Post-election tax planning : what to do now

CHARLES R. JOHNSON, WEALTH DIRECTOR, FIDUCIARY TRUST INTERNATIONAL, RICHARD PIANOFORTE, HEAD OF NEW YORK PERSONAL TAX GROUP, FIDUCIARY TRUST INTERNATIONAL, ED MOONEY, DIRECTOR OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, FIDUCIARY TRUST INTERNATIONAL

The post-election tax landscape is coming into focus, creating more certainty about how to plan for income and estate taxes in the years ahead. The most significant outcome for tax policy is that we believe many key provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) for individuals, which would have expired after next year, are now likely to be extended.

For most taxpayers, this may mean:

• Reduced individual tax rates continue: Republicans aim to extend today’s lower rates to prevent tax increases on individuals. If extended, the top rate on ordinary income would stay at 37% versus 39.6%.

• Standard deduction remains high: The TCJA nearly doubled the standard deduction. For 2025, it rises to $15,000 for individuals and $30,000 if you’re filing jointly.

• High estate and gift tax exemption remains: Estate tax exemption increases to $13,990,000 per individual in 2025, $27,980,000 for couples.

• State and local tax (SALT) deductions: The TCJA capped state and local tax deductions at $10,000 per person and per couple. This provision may revert to being unlimited or may instead be capped at a higher amount. But be aware that the alternative minimum tax exemption is also scheduled to be reduced unless extended, potentially lowering the actual tax benefit for many taxpayers. Given

this, traditional tax planning strategies, such as looking for ways to reduce taxable income, transferring wealth, and giving to charity, remain beneficial for most taxpayers. Find ways to reduce your taxable income

Since we do not expect taxes to increase in 2025, we generally advise clients to focus on reducing their taxable income or postponing their tax liabilities to the following year. This can be accomplished by accelerating deductions in the current year, while postponing income events into the next year.

• Harvest unrealized losses. Consider taking unrealized losses in your taxable investment portfolios to offset realized gains. If you take losses in excess of gains, you can use up to $3,000 of those losses to offset ordinary income in the current year and carry over the balance to future years. Bear in mind that, to abide by wash sale rules, you cannot buy back that security or any other substantially identical security within 30 days before or after you sold it at a loss.

• Increase your retirement account contributions. Income can be reduced by making maximum deductible contributions to your eligible retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA or 401(k). IRS limits for taxdeferred retirement accounts are indexed to inflation, so typically increase each year, providing a chance to build your retirement savings.

• Send your required IRA distribution to charity. If you are older than 70½ and have an IRA and charitable intent, another technique is to do a QCD (qualified charitable distribution) for which you may give up to $105,000 (in 2024) and $108,000 (in 2025) directly from your IRA to charitable organizations and not have that amount count toward your income (or get a deduction).

• Bundle charitable contributions. If your taxable income is below the standard deduction threshold, consider “bundling” two years of charitable contributions into the current year. This could move you past the standard deduction threshold, allowing you to itemize your deductions. Then take the standard deduction the following year. By doing this, you help maximize the way that charitable contributions can reduce your taxable income in both years.

• Postpone income. If you can’t reduce your taxable income any further, take whatever type of income event you can control and postpone it to next year. This can be done by postponing things such as Roth IRA conversions; taking capital gains, a bonus, or a commission; or, exercising stock options. By postponing those income events, you’ll push off paying the tax for another year.

Capitalize on wealth transfer opportunities

Before the election, many aimed to reduce their taxable estates to avoid the 40% tax on amounts exceeding the estate tax exemption, fearing the exemption might be halved in 2026. Although we believe the exemption amount is unlikely to be reduced, trust structures established to transfer wealth remain useful. Trusts enable you to specify how and when assets are distributed, and they also help protect the assets from creditors.

Tax-effective ways to transfer wealth include:

Establishing a SLAT. With a spousal lifetime access trust (SLAT), you can use your lifetime gift and estate tax exemption while preserving the availability of the trust property for the support of your spouse and family. The assets in the trust are allowed to grow income tax free. Once the trust is established, you, as the grantor, will be considered the owner of the trust for income tax purposes. This means that the trust income is taxed to you, not in the trust. Freeing the trust from the payment of income tax preserves more of the trust property for growth, in addition to the tax payments serving to reduce your taxable estate— all without additional gift tax—as well as providing some asset protection for your beneficiaries.

Using your annual gift exclusion. This allows you to gift assets to as many people as you want without paying estate tax or tapping into your estate tax exemption amount. In 2024, you can gift up to $18,000 per person, or $36,000 as a couple. In 2025, that amount is $19,000 per person, $38,000 per couple.

You can give more than that amount if desired. If you gift more than the annual exclusion amount, you are required to file a gift tax return, but if your taxable gifts remain below the estate tax exemption amount, you will owe no tax.

Use charitable contributions to reduce income and estate taxes

Charitable gifting is one of the few deductions remaining that allow individuals to reduce their tax liability. In doing so, you also reduce the amount of your estate that may be subject to estate tax.

• Donate appreciated securities. One of the most efficient ways to gift is to do so with appreciated property. The reason is that you will not pay capital gains tax if you simply donate the appreciated property to charity. You should use property that has a low cost basis and make sure that you have held it for more than one year.

• Establish a donor advised fund (DAF). If you have charitable intent but are unsure of which charitable organization will ultimately receive the gift, consider a DAF. This allows you to put any amount of cash or appreciated property away before year end, get the deduction in the current year, yet decide who benefits at a future time. These are especially useful vehicles at year end when you might have an unexpected income event but are undecided about which organization to give to.

• Create a charitable remainder trust (CRT). If in your estate documents you have named—or have considered naming—a charity or charities as a beneficiary of some of your assets, funding a CRT now can provide you with a current income tax deduction. If you fund the CRT with appreciated securities, the trust can diversify the portfolio and provide a stream of income to you for life or a term of years.
