DALTILE:

Wood & Stone & Concrete, Oh, My! OPTIONS FOR EXTERIOR TILES & PAVERS by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Summer is the ideal time to spruce up exterior living spaces with tiles and pavers. Robin Bradford, Showroom Designer for Daltile, first establishes the look clients would like to achieve – concrete, wood, or natural stone. “We have a lot of options within those categories once we hone in on their preferred style,” explains Bradford. Daltile has a new product called Metro Impressions, an 8x8 paver tile that is a modern artisan update to a terracotta. It comes in a wide variety of colors, including the cooler grey tones that are currently all the rage. “People like the contrast of the cool mixing with the warm because it looks so natural,” explains Bradford. For homeowners desiring a wood plank look, Saddlebrook XT exterior tile offers a coefficient of friction rating for ultimate slip resistance and is an excellent choice. There’s also Dignitary, a thicker product that is a 2 cm exterior paver with a sedimentary slate look. “You obviously can’t put a wooden deck near a pool, but this enables homeowners to make it appear as if you have,” says Bradford. “Combining wood, water, and nature adds warmth.” Metro Impressions also has a coordinating wall tile that Bradford describes as a “show stopper.” “It’s got this awesome metallic glaze over it,” she says. Though it cannot withstand the elements, it’s a great option if, say, you have an entertainment area in the lower level of your home that opens up to the backyard. “This would make an excellent coordinating tile to use on a bar or accent wall to tie together the indoor and outdoor,” says Bradford. Visit the Daltile showroom at 9901 Kincaid Dr., Suite 400A in Fishers or call 317-841-0833 to refresh your exterior spaces this summer with updated tiles or pavers. For more inspiration, check out Daltile online at daltile.com. 8 H AV E N

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

Custom Details in a Spec Home by Courtney Walker Pope / photos by The Home Aesthetic

While looking for new construction homes, have you ever considered a builder’s custom spec home as an option? G&G Custom Homes carefully considers the details and design trends that make a house a home when building their specs. Hilari Goris, Interior Designer for G&G leads us through her process. “It all starts with a great floor plan,” explains Goris, “whether the end client is a family with young children or empty nesters, we really want the home to appeal to all by having a floor plan that flows properly.” Once the floor plan is finalized, 1 0 H AV E N

Goris focuses on designing the details! “I always try to add extra special details in the kitchen and master bathroom. I want potential buyers to remember the home, so spending the extra time and efforts on cabinet details and beautiful tile can be very important.” Interior design relies heavily on inspiration to make a house a home. Goris spends hours scouring modern trends and timeless style searching for unique elements. It’s true, G&G homes do not look like the house down the street and their team of experts can create both

modern and traditional designs! “We can really warm a modern design by adding wood elements that aren’t busy and by selecting the perfect paint colors for both walls and millwork details,” said Goris. Put G&G Homes Custom Homes on your list as a new build contractor, and make sure to check out their beautiful spec homes. Get more information by contacting a team member at 317-418-7665 or visiting their website ggcustomhomes.com.

Why Build? New Home Design Trends, Part 2 Whether your looking for inspiration for your next home renovation or you’re ready to start browsing for a new home, here are a few of the top design trends you’ll see in 2019 – many of which you can see in person at First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama this fall! BLACK WINDOW FRAMES Do you prefer a sleek and distinctive look for your home? Black window frames are the answer. The bold color choice has a modern appeal and frames are available in every price point. THE CEILING AS THE FIFTH WALL OF DESIGN Ceilings will not be ignored this year. Statement ceilings transform rooms into bigger and brighter living spaces. Creative textures, colors and lighting can bring this seemingly blank canvas to life. CREATIVE INTEGRATION OF OUTDOOR SPACES Small outdoor spots no longer limit design capabilities. Cozy and appealing outdoor living areas can be integrated into homes in even the narrowest lots. You’ll see expert design, carefully selected features and furniture create exciting indooroutdoor spaces. DELINEATION OF SPACES THROUGH MIXED MATERIALS Designers are shaking things up in 2019 with a variety of textured elements to elevate the style of a home. Homes will have better defined spaces, both outdoor and in, with mixed materials like stone or brick.

bagi.com bagi.com

INDOOR/OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS Easy physical and visual connections with outdoor spaces is enticing and generates an abundance of nature light and ventilation. The seamless flow of indoor and outdoor space is a trend gaining momentum each year. MID-CENTURY MODERN AND MODERN FARMHOUSE Bringing out a home’s original character is a style that is sweeping the nation. Mid-century modern homes have a warm and inviting living space with large windows and open design concepts. The popular modern farmhouse incorporates natural wood beams, large sinks and barn doors.

HOMES THIS YEAR WILL FEATURE BLACK WINDOW FRAMES FOR A MODERN APPEAL AND STAIRS WILL

MULTIGENERATIONAL LIVING Overall, this trend is about creating a home to accommodate multiple generations living under one roof. Floor plans and design elements allow for all household members to gather comfortably in living spaces. You’ll notice suites and transition spaces capable of quickly transforming into bedrooms. STAIRS AS A FOCAL PIECE Known more for utility in a home rather than design, stairs are taking a life of their own. Homes this year will have stairs with fine detailing, unique materials and one-of-a-kind designs. Stairs and rails are available in an array of styles and are suitable for any budget.

Questions to Ask When Looking for the Right Builder

As homeownership month concludes, we wanted to highlight a few things to consider when you are searching for the perfect builder. Though builders might generally use similar tools and materials when building homes, not all are alike when it comes to things like technique, training and customer service. Finding the right builder whose business approach aligns well with your personal preferences is essential to a pleasant home-building experience. The builder will be asking you plenty of questions during your initial meeting to discuss the home you envision. But the questions you ask the builder are equally important to determine if it’s going to be a positive partnership. Consider asking your builder about the following:

1. WORK EXPERIENCE

You will want to find a builder with extensive experience building homes similar to the one you want. Ask to see examples of floor plans and designs they’ve done before to ensure their company can deliver what you need. You should also ask if they have or are working toward any professional designations, which show that the builder has advanced training in a particular area. A few examples of such designations include a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), a Graduate Master Builder (CMB), and a Certified Green Professional (CGP). Finally, you’ll want to verify that they are a BAGI builder, as all BAGI members adhere to the Quality Assurance Builder Standards.

2. REFERENCES

Any high-quality builder should be ready to provide you with several names and phone numbers of satisfied customers. If they can’t, consider that a red flag and walk away. When reaching out to those former clients, ask about how well the builder followed through on the initial plans, and if the builder met their expectations regarding budget and timing. Don’t forget the most telling question of them all: If they could do it all over, would they hire that builder again?

3. COMMUNICATION STYLE

Many builders will do their best to accommodate your communication preferences. But it’s always best to establish expectations as early as possible. The frequency (weekly, monthly, as-needed, etc.) and method (phone, text, email) of how you communicate early on with each other is something that will set the tone throughout the whole building process.

For more information about how to find the right builder to create your dream home, visit www.bagi.com.

Alan Goldsticker Memorial Scholarship For those who have not heard, Alan Goldsticker, retired Division President of Ryland, has challenged members to match a generous $25,000 in scholarships to award to students studying the Construction Trades. We kicked off this challenge at the April Casino event, and in total have raised $15,000. Alan being very excited with our progress, has pledged another $5000 to the remaining $10,000 we needed to raise to get to the $25,000, so we are now at a total of $30,000 matching fund from him. We think he is trying to make Barb work harder, so feel free to reach out to her at barbaraz@bagi. com if you or your company can help! The “Fun” committee has come up with some other events they are working on now to raise more scholarship funds. The first idea includes doing an Applebee’s Dine to Donate evening, where you can have dinner out at participating locations and we would get a percentage of that. The other will be some type of Decorated Christmas Tree auction where the fun committee teams up, picks a theme and then promotes their tree to see who can get the biggest donation.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

HAVEN:

FIGHTING – AND WINNING – THE WAR FOR TALENT:

Attracting Great Employees The great news: the home design and construction industry is booming. The not-so-great news: we don’t have enough talent to fill critical roles. All the demand in the world – and all the dollars that go with it – don’t overcome the construction labor shortages we’re facing. So…. what does? FINDING SOLUTIONS TO BUILD A STRONG WORKFORCE How are home construction firms attacking the talent shortage? A FEW WAYS:

■ Hiring more women ■ Hiring more military veterans ■ Offering more extensive on-the-job training opportunities ■ Recruiting year-round (not just ahead of the busy season) ■ Building relationships with trade schools ■ Offering student internships ■ Focusing on retaining current employees (e.g. financial incentives, employee appreciation/engagement programs)

But they’re missing something. Attracting and retaining the skilled and unskilled laborers you need to satisfy your customers and grow your business isn’t just a keep-you-up-at-night problem. The solution lies in marketing your business to the community in innovative ways. Consider using video to highlight a fun team activity or event. Promoting and valuing a team atmosphere can be a key differentiator, and video is a great way to highlight that. The next step is leveraging this asset and telling your story to those who can help you fill labor shortages. Post your videos on your website; integrate them into your blog posts or articles;

send them out in emails; and, perhaps most powerfully, go social. Social media has the power to help you extend your reach, engage with those interested in the construction industry – and even create interest in those who never considered entering the field. Labor shortages are hitting all of us in the industry: fight back. By emphasizing your culture and telling your story through strategic video, you can gain the edge you need to win talent over to your side. If you need help attracting, and retaining, skilled workers, contact Haven today. Visit us online at havenhome.me to learn CRE ATE. more about what we can do for you. We’re your ally in the war for talent.

Telling your company’s story through strategic marketing videos and social media is a great way to create interest in those who never considered entering the construction industry.

LIGHTING

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

IMPROVE THE LOOK OF A ROOM WITH

Pendant Lighting by Matt Keating

Pendant lighting is popular among both homeowners and designers these days. It can provide effective lighting that can improve the ambiance of any room or act as task lighting for certain areas of your home. Jodi Burtner, owner of Burtner Electric in Noblesville, says with so many options and styles available pendant lighting can be used in different ways to greatly enhance a room. “Pendant lighting is typically not used to light an entire room but is used instead as an accent or decorative lighting,” Burtner says. “Pendant lights now come in a large variety of shapes, sizes, and styles to be used as an extra decoration that will also give off light.” Pendant lights are often directed down on a room to highlight a specific space. They give out additional light for people eating dinner at a kitchen island, working in the home office, or having guests over in the basement recreation room. They are also a great way to add light and style to an otherwise dark hallway. “Thanks to their versatility, pendant lights are great for complimenting the décor of any room,” Burtner says. “They look great hanging over a kitchen island or lighting up an entryway to welcome guests. They can be used as bedside lamps or hung over a dining room table or bar.” Burtner Electric has been serving the community since 1986 and are true experts in the electrical and lighting industry. They can help you update your homes lighting plan by thoughtfully incorporating pendant lights! For a free estimate, contact Burtner at 317-773-7663 or online at burtnerelectric.com.

OUTDOOR LUXURY POOLSIDE:

Stone Artisans Invites You to Relax Beneath Both Sun & Stars by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Living in the era of ever-present technology, when we all seem to have our noses stuck inside of some sort of screen and our pockets are dinging, pinging, and ringing, it can be easy for families and friends to drift apart. That’s why creating a welcoming outdoor environment for entertaining is so great; it invites people

to unplug their devices and reconnect with nature, engage in conversation, and simply unwind. Cory Kroger, President and CEO of Stone Artisans, finds that clients with custom pools love to build either a swim-up bar, a grilling section, or a firepit encased in granite or a natural stone product that’s adjacent to the pool area. “We’re in the Midwest, but people still want to take the time to enjoy their beverages in the pool,” says Kroger. “It’s called a ‘staycation,’ and it makes sense because frankly, if you’re going to spend a good chunk of money on a pool with a swim-up bar, you might as well stick around town and enjoy it!” Firepits are wildly popular because as homeowners transition from daytime pool activities to nighttime festivities, it’s nice to have an outdoor gathering spot that is warm, cozy, and inviting. “Our pool and outdoor living area has become everyone’s favorite place to be in the summer months,” says one of Kroger’s satisfied clients. “We often start our day at the firepit with coffee, move to the pool for midday fun, and retire to the firepit for evening cocktails and storytelling.”

For those who like to pop in and out of the pool in the evening but don’t want to freeze, the firepit provides warm ambiance and hot flames to knock the chill out of the air.

For those who like to pop in and out of the pool in the evening but don’t want to freeze, the firepit provides warm ambiance and hot flames to knock the chill out of the air. “Having a spot to warm up and just enjoy the atmosphere of the fire itself is a good way to extend the pool and outdoor entertainment area,” says Kroger. He also maintains that, frequently during the warmer months, families no longer regularly gather in the dining room or kitchen for meals. “The firepit has almost doubled as the dinner table because we put a couch and some chairs around it while we eat and drink,” says Kroger. His family had a firepit by his pool, which they

enjoyed immensely. It was the center place of every gathering – even trumping the draw of basketball courts and volleyball nets. “We were out there every night,” says Kroger. “It was the gathering place in the evening.” So, if your family is looking to detox from technology or just take a break from the constant hustle and bustle of life, consider creating a luxury outdoor connection space by your pool. “I encourage you to turn the television and the smart phones off and turn the fire up,” he says. “It’s like a little piece of heaven.” Stone Artisans is located at 7952 Zionsville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268. FRANKLIN WINDOW & DOOR:

Moisture Barriers: The Important Details You Don’t See by Courtney Walker Pope

The beauty of home: architecture, brick, windows, doors, the interior details. Usually our minds race to elements that can easily be seen and discussed amongst you and your building team. What’s not discussed and put at the top of a new build priority list? Moisture barrier systems. Franklin Window and Door is opening up that important discussion with their representatives from two moisture barrier manufacturers explaining the importance of using a complete system. There are many moisture barrier systems in the marketplace but Franklin Window and Door counts on two systems as their trusted choice: ZIP System and Tyvek Home Wrap. A complete system is composed of moisture barrier flashing and moisture barrier tape made by ZIP and Tyvek, respectively for each of their systems.

2 8 H AV E N

ZIP System is a leading industry product – it’s an integrated OSB (oriented strand board) panel with a membrane. The panel is installed in pieces and secured with their acrylic tape. Around windows and doors, the tape stretches up for a continuous seal or their liquid system can be used to create a seamless watertight seal. “It’s an easy-to-install product and the ZIP System strengthens with time,” explained Justin Grimes, Regional Sales Manager of ZIP. Tyvek Home Wrap offers moisture barrier flexible sheeting and tape. “Our sheets and tape have been engineered and produced to work together. One of the many things I appreciate about Franklin Window and Door is, when they install windows and doors around our product, they consistently do it right the first time,” said Colin Miller, representative of Tyvek. This can be the difference between a

major, costly issue down the road and living your best, uninterrupted life in your home for many years to come. Unfortunately, it is common practice for builders to use a mixture of products, but owner of Franklin Window and Door, Scott Brown, explains this can be a major problem. “If there is ever a failure of the products, the manufacturers have the right to deny a claim if it is not their complete system. They design and test the products for adhesion to each other, not other manufacturers products,” Brown said. Nigel Hoss of Hoss Homes understands how important this is to delivering a quality home. According to Hoss, “As a builder, we want to ensure a perfectly built home. One imperative step is using a complete moisture barrier system including flashing and tape by the same manufacturer.” When builders or customers choose not to use ZIP or Tyvek complete systems, issues can arise. “I have seen homes with button fasters in the corners of windows that eventually leak and cause major issues with other components of the home,” explains Grimes. Don’t underestimate the importance of a correctly installed complete moisture barrier system. Kent Shaffer Homes Celebrates Three Generations of Building Trust with Clients by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Adam Gibson and The Home Aesthetic

K

ent Shaffer Homes, a third-generation familyrun business, has a stellar reputation in the Indianapolis community. They are known for building exceptional quality homes in desirable neighborhoods, utilizing experienced craftsmen & high-quality materials, and providing personal and informative customer service that goes above and beyond. It all began in 1956 when Robert Shaffer started a home construction business, which he ran for a quarter of a century. When he passed the torch to his son it became Kent Shaffer Homes. Kent has been running the business now for 35 years, having built more than 250 industry-recognized premiere homes in the area. Kent’s daughter, Kristen Shaffer, began her apprenticeship with the company when she was just five years old, accompanying her dad to job sites. By 10 years old, she was helping him clean up job sites, and by 16 years, she was assisting in the office. She officially joined Kent Shaffer Homes in 2006. A graduate of Purdue University’s renowned Construction Management Program, Kristen has become an integral part of the Kent Shaffer Homes team. “I love this business and the strong connections I make with our clients,” says Kristen. While big production home builders can rapidly crank out houses, they cannot offer the same personalized care and daily contact with each of their clients that Kristen and Kent do. Erecting just 5-10 homes a year, they purposefully remain a small company that is fiercely devoted to their clients’ needs. “We’re on the job site every day, walking homeowners through the process every step of the way,” says Kristen. When snafus arise, clients don’t have to weave their way through a sea of supervisors to get answers because Kristen and Kent are the center point of contact and promptly correct any issues or concerns.

“The most important thing is to be upfront and honest with customers,” says Kristen. “With hundreds of different subcontractors working the job site on a daily basis, it has to be managed properly and efficiently.” She notes that the most rewarding part of her career is when clients come back to build with them a second or third time. “It’s also neat that we’ve been in the business long enough that we have clients who refer their children to us,” says Kristen. “That has happened quite a few times, and it makes me really proud to know that people trust us with their kids. There’s no greater compliment!” A member of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis and National Association of Home Builders, Kent Shaffer Homes has been involved in home shows for more than three decades. Next year

one of their homes will be featured in the 2020 Homea-Rama in Zionsville’s Holliday Farms. A lot draw was held recently, and building will begin in Holliday Farms starting in November. Last year Kent Shaffer Homes was awarded the People’s Choice honor for the magnificent modern farmhouse they built for the 2018 Home-a-Rama that was located in Westfield’s Chatham Hills. The 6,800 sq. ft. beauty features large picture windows in the living room that offer a stunning view of the Pete Dye-designed golf course. It also has a spacious chef ’s kitchen that opens up into the living and dining rooms, as well as a walk-out basement and patio that extends from the master bedroom to the main outdoor living space. “Our goal is to partner with clients to create peaceful homes that entice owners to slow down and nourish their souls,” says Kristen. That’s certainly what enticed Andre and Erica Porter to purchase the home. Though the pair were looking to build a more rustic farmhouse-type home in Chatham Hills, when they toured the Home-a-Rama house, their plans changed. They absolutely fell in love with the style and structure, and the huge windows across the back that allowed natural light to pour in sealed the deal. “We decided there was no need for us to build because it would have been very difficult to match what Kent Shaffer Homes had already done with this place,” says Andre, who felt that the layout of the home wholly suited their family’s needs. “This home has perfect spaces for the three kids to spread out,” says Andre, noting that there is not only a fully finished basement with space for entertaining but also an expansive playroom. “The boys basically have the upstairs wing to themselves and Erica and I hang out on the first floor when we want privacy,” says Andre. As for working with Kent and Kristen, the Porters couldn’t have been more pleased. “They were very candid and transparent throughout the entire process and have been very responsive to all of our needs,” says Andre. When it comes to dialing in on the features homeowners are looking for, these days Kristen says that people crave open floor plans with a dining, great room, and kitchen all in one central space. “They are going away from larger homes and wanting more functional spaces – not wasted rooms,” she says. Smart home automation and energy efficient homes are also on people’s radar. “Building is starting to incorporate a lot more technology,” explains Kristen, who regularly enrolls in online classes to stay well-informed on the latest building trends, technology tools, and options in energy efficiency. “I want us to stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest building techniques.” As for the Porters, they couldn’t be happier to live in what Andre calls “the number one home in town.” “We love living here,” he says. “We look forward to growing and raising our family in this home.” For more information on building your custom home in the picturesque Holliday Farms community with Kent Shaffer Homes, visit KENT SHAFFER HOMES kentshafferhomes.com. kentshafferhomes.com

VIDA EVENTS & DESIGN:

PAINT SELECTION MADE SIMPLE WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE. We want to freshen up the house with new paint and once we get it on the walls it’s not what we had in mind. Paint is an amazing decor tool and Vida Events & Design has all of your color needs covered.

tips & tricks: 1. CHOOSE A NEUTRAL MAIN COLOR: Find a great neutral gray or brown tone for larger rooms, kitchen, hallways, and entry. Then move to more specific colors in smaller rooms to create a pleasing palette. 2. NOTE EXISTING FINISHES: If your cabinets and fixed items read more gray then choose gray tone wall paint. If your cabinets, furnishings and fabrics have brown hues then stick to a warmer beige wall. If fixed items such as cabinets must stay as-is, yet are not supporting your design goal, there is a way to transition the paint color to ensure other rooms can lean towards your preference. 3. TRY SAMPLE COLORS: Many people create their color vision via Pinterest or Houzz, but the best trick to finding the color you want is to place samples directly on the wall. You can do this by purchasing testers offered by most retailers or by utilizing a Sherwin Williams trade partner, like Vida, who will bring removeable samples to tape on the walls so you can see the color in action. 4. EMBRACE VARIETY: Be prepared for paint to look different at various hours of the day. One of the best traits of a good paint color is it’s difference in morning light and nighttime sky. Embrace the variety, don’t be intimidated by it.

5. USE ACCESSORIES: A house divided? Many clients have one spouse who wants to go bright and bold, and the other who is a bit more conservative with color. In these cases, select a neutral gray or tan base wall color, then use fabrics and accessories to get those punches of fun color. Accessories are easier to change than wall paint. Don’t let the 1,500 plus paint colors on a deck overwhelm you. A quick paint consult with a trained professional can often ease your stress. Let Vida Events & Design help you make your life beautiful!

next steps: EXTERIOR PAINT Exterior paint is a significant investment. Make sure you get it right the first time. BEFORE

Once you have your paint pallette finalized, build another layer to your design by adding wallpaper and custom window treatments. As a Thibaut dealer, Vida Events & Design can take your design to the next level.

HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

Ductless Cooling Systems Keep Your Hot Summer Days

COOL by Matt Keating

3 6 H AV E N

“In homes without existing ductwork, space, or budget to install new ducts, a ductless heating and air system is an excellent option.” – BRIAN SCHUTT Owner, Homesense Heating & Cooling

During the hot summer days and nights homeowners want to keep cool without putting a dent in their budgets. Brian Schutt, owner of Homesense Heating & Cooling, suggests you consider ductless heating and cooling air systems. “They are a newer system that targets hard to cool places in homes like finished attics, four season rooms, and master bedrooms,” Schutt said. “They are becoming increasingly popular because they are convenient and energy efficient.” Schutt noted that a ductless heating and air system is exactly what it sounds like. “It’s a heating and cooling system that doesn’t need ducts for air distribution. The main HVAC unit is connected to individual air handlers inside that distribute air directly into the area they serve.” A single home can have multiple air handlers connected to one system. Temperatures can be controlled in each area, or zone, separately. “The most common application is a sunroom because the extra windows create a unique need for cooling or heating, depending on the season,” Schutt said. Ductless systems are also quiet and help keep energy costs low. Other benefits include improved indoor air quality, a remotely controlled system, and the ability to install out of the way on ceilings or walls. According to Schutt, “In homes without existing ductwork, space, or budget to install new ducts, a ductless heating and air system is an excellent option.” Keep your cool this summer with Homesense, go online to trusthomsense.com to schedule an appointment or get a free estimate.

ELECTRICITY & ENERGY

JEFFERSON ELECTRIC:

For the People:

Jefferson Electric Promises a Lifetime of Quality by Christy Heitger-Ewing

When Joel Walsman recently met with a 60-year-old family-run electrical contracting firm, he smiled because it’s run by three sons who are all now in their 70s. The interaction was special because he felt as though he had gotten a glimpse 50 years into his own future. Walsman, founder and CEO of Jefferson Electric, works closely with his father, the company’s CFO. And he has four sons, all of whom want to be electricians like daddy when they grow up. Walsman started Jefferson Electric in 2011, a full-service electrical contractor in downtown Indianapolis for residential and commercial wiring whose unique expertise is renewable energy – both solar energy and battery storage. Those at Jefferson Electric describe themselves as professionals, innovators, and family. They hold countless master licenses and multiple solar professional certifications. For instance, they are

3 8 H AV E N

currently the only regional contractor certified in the technology for the TESLA Powerwall 2, a lithium battery for residential energy storage. They also do TESLA vehicle electrical vehicle charging. “TESLA goes through a stringent vetting process so it’s definitely a note of recognition for us and speaks well to consumers,” says Walsman. In addition, Jefferson Electric is the most certified renewable energy company in the state of Indiana. They also boast impressive honors. For example, Andy Spohr, their fourth-year apprentice, recently won the national championship for electrical apprenticeships for both residential and commercial wiring. “He’s literally the gold medalist for the nation!” says Walsman. “That’s a huge achievement.” But it all circles back to the people, as people are their number one priority. Daily the staff at Jefferson Electric focuses on relationships, reliability, quality, and integrity. “We think these are the tenets of excellence because excellence isn’t just how we do the technical aspects of our trade. It’s also wrapped up in a significant way in how we value people and interact with our customers,” maintains Walsman. “At the end of the day, we can be awesome at the task and poor at relationships and no one would ever call us excellent, regardless of how many accolades we received.” The company recently extended their three-year workmanship warranty to a lifetime warranty because it’s in line with their values, both internal and outward facing. “We hire lifetime team members to serve lifetime customers,” says Walsman. “Therefore, we wanted to offer a lifetime warranty to

prove that we’re in it for the long haul!” Many electric companies will offer either a solar energy professional installer as their credential or perhaps an electrical license. Jefferson Electric brings a much stronger scope of credentials to the table. “With our solar energy, we provide asset management services. So basically, when we install a solar array for a customer, we also monitor that solar array for the lifetime of the array,” explains Walsman. “If there’s a malfunction, we’re calling the customer. The customer doesn’t have to call us because we have access to monitor the efficiency and production.” Jefferson Electric is located at 2114 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46201. Smart Pergolas Make Every Hour a Happy Hour by Matt Keating

Anna Bertolini, co-owner of The Smart Pergola, with showroom locations in Carmel and Westfield/ Sheridan, believes having a structured louvered roof makes every hour happy hour. “Happy hour shouldn’t be limited to one hour, and it shouldn’t be weather dependent,” Bertolini says. “Your happy hour might be in the morning over coffee while reading the latest news on your smartphone, so angle the louvers to create complete shade so you can see the screen and enjoy!” The Smart Pergola, manufactured by StruXure Outdoor, is engineered and designed to withstand all types of weather conditions, with a built-in rain sensor and smart motors which will allow to automatically close the louvers in case of rain. They can even be connected to the WiFi home system and be controlled remotely or programmed to independently change the position of the louvers during the day. “During the day, let the heat vent out of the open roof, while the fan pulls in and circulates the fresh air. During the evening, angle the louvers the other way, drop the motorized screen to block the bugs and early evening sun,” Bertolini recommends. Additionally, by closing the louvers, lighting up the fireplace, lowering the vinyl drops, and switching on the lights or heater if needed you can continue to use your outdoor space during colder months. The Smart Pergola will keep the snow off your patio and furniture, no shoveling needed. Made from maintenance-free powder-coated and extruded aluminum, The Smart Pergola lets homeowners enjoy it’s comforts without all the work. CONCRETE

CUSTOM CONCRETE:

The Foundation for Quality Custom Homes 4 2 H AV E N

Custom home builders offer homeowners a one-of-a-kind residence, from taller ceilings and larger rooms to personalized details. And, for decades, Custom Concrete has worked alongside custom home builders throughout central Indiana to make dreams and blueprints come to life. Like our builder partners, Custom Concrete’s goal is to create a space that fits the needs and lifestyle of the homeowner by pouring a foundation for their dream to take shape upon. Custom home foundations are three-dimensional, placed on a three-dimensional lot. This makes understanding the land and its elevation a crucial component of any project. It’s imperative to evaluate and thoroughly understand the unique elevation, natural drainage flow, and expectations of final grade for the home site before getting started. As a trusted advisor, Custom Concrete team members spend a considerable amount of time surveying the land and asking all the right questions to make sure the job is done right the first time. The old saying “measure twice and cut once” rings true for the team. You could say it’s something they’ve become experts at doing. Their customer care team has a combined total of over 250 years of experience in custom home foundations. “You only get one shot at pouring a foundation,” Darin Hackman, VP of Residential Construction, said. “We train our team on what to look for, what to ask, and how to confirm the details before our crew ever arrives at the job site. There are some aspects you must see in person to confirm and others that require information from the builder or homeowner. We make sure all our bases are covered before any earth is moved.” It’s not all blueprints and shovels, either. Thanks to advances in technology, builders, as well as their partners, can do better work more efficiently for customers. Custom Concrete invests in the latest advances in

technology for computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to assist in the development of 2D and 3D renderings of projects. In addition, Custom Concrete also invests in the newest equipment used onsite for everything from excavation, footings and walls to waterproofing, drainage tile installation, pouring the concrete floor and even backfilling around the foundation of the home. This helps ensure a more efficient and effective process, providing the best foundation possible. The value of the work can be seen years after the custom home is finished, long after the Custom Concrete trucks have left the address. “It means a lot to us to play a role in the development of our community,” said Custom Concrete Senior Vice President Jason Ells. “It’s a good feeling to know our work helps provide members of the community with homes. Driving by, we have to smile. We helped build that house. It provides all of us with a real sense of accomplishment and pride.” Custom Concrete’s commitment to its work, a job well done, and the community is visible with every job completed. CARRINGTON HOMES:

Doing Things Right Carrington Homes Has Built its Business on Excellent Communications, Relationships, and Creativity by Matt Keating

What distinguishes a custom home builder from the rest? “We believe what sets us apart is our communication, relationships, and our creativity,” said Carl McIntyre, president of Carrington Homes, McCordsville. With communications, the solution is simple. “When our customers call, we answer – period,” McIntyre says. “We believe our customers expect, and are paying for, quick responses.” When it comes to solid relationships with clients, Carrington Homes also excels. “We built our business on strong relationships with both our clients and vendors,” McIntyre says. “Loyalty and commitment are important to us.” Carrington Homes also offers excellent creativity with their work. According to McIntyre, “Creatively, we try to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to both design and our processes.” 4 4 H AV E N

Established in 1992 by Chuck, Sandy and Carl McIntyre, Carrington Homes has a solid reputation as a builder that emphasizes integrity and excellence. “Because we rely almost solely on referrals, it is imperative that we do what we say, when we say we’re going to do it,” McIntyre says. “We are honest even when it’s the hardest and costs the most. We do things right.” By discovering what the homeowner really wants Carrington Homes understands and anticipates the needs of its clients. “We listen,” McIntyre says. “We utilize several tools to extract from our clients what they want in their home. We also work with designers and our vendor partners to determine and deliver what our clients want.” The value of quality vendor partners cannot be understated. The builders and staff at Carrington Homes have enjoyed working with McComb Pella Windows & Doors of Indianapolis, for many years. “I enjoy Jay Amon, my salesman at McComb Pella, because he is thorough, and takes his role in the process very seriously,” McIntyre says. “He is a true professional.” That professionalism, along with quality of product, make McComb Pella a trusted partner. RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:

Affordable Updates for Homeowners

C A N R E S U LT I N P R O F I TA B L E R E T U R N S by Matt Keating

When most people think about updating their homes, the first thing that comes to mind are the big projects. Remodeling the bathrooms, renovating the kitchen with new cabinets, counters, and appliances, or upgrading the flooring throughout the home. But these updates can be a major undertaking. Phil Hotle, a Realtor with RE/MAX At the Crossing, wants homeowners to know there are affordable updates they can do to their houses, that will also provide a profitable financial return in the future. 4 6 H AV E N

“Crown molding is a great idea,” Hotle says. “It makes rooms seem both bigger and taller. It’s an elegant addition to any home. People just need to be careful with their proportions. If your ceiling is nine feet or less, it’s better to go with simpler styles to avoid overwhelming the room.” Hotle also suggests placing a chair railing at one-third the distance of the ceiling height. “A chair railing placed incorrectly can make a room seem out of proportion. Also, don’t forget the trim around entryways, doors and windows.”

Hotle noted that getting new, high-quality fans and updating your paint color scheme also makes a home look better. “If your ceiling fans are old and outdated, new fans, along with a fresh paint job and crown molding, can give your rooms a refreshing update, while saving money,” he says. Hotle also recommends upgrading your insulation and adding some storage. “Upgrading your insulation is not as sexy as a kitchen remodel, but it doesn’t cost as much either ($65,000 versus $3,000). Plus, you’ll save all year long on your utility bills. It’s a win-win.” Another idea is to get creative with storage. Hotle added that you don’t have to sell anyone on the value of extra storage and built-in organization. According to Hotle, here are a few ways to think outside the toy box, “Open drywall to create storage cubbies between your wall’s studs; install platform storage that hangs from your garage ceiling; or you can even use your stairs for more storage. One clever person re-purposed an old chest of drawers and created storage within a basement staircase.”

Don’t forget about updating the exterior of you home. “Adding some trees doesn’t instantly pop into your head, when you think of adding value to your home, but trees are moneymakers that get better with age,” Hotle said. Installing landscape lighting is also an option. “Exterior lighting makes your home shine in the evening, accents features you like most about your home, and keeps burglars away. Installing motion detecting lights can even lower some homeowners’ insurance premiums. Put the lights in a dusk to dawn timer, so you don’t waste energy running them during the day. Choose a warm, white light. It will make your home look and feel welcoming!” With just a few updates, you can increase your home’s efficiency and your enjoyment of it. And when you are ready to sell, those changes can deliver a solid return. If you would like more information on preparing your home for market, reach out to Phil Hotle at 317-919-8504.

PRO TIP: Trees are moneymakers that get better with age.
