EMPLOYMENT
HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:
DESTINATION EMPLOYMENT is a Win-Win-Win for Company, Employee, & Homeowner by Christy Heitger-Ewing
The companies who make up Home Artisans of Indiana embrace the concept of “destination employment,” which recognizes that what’s good for employees is equally good for the company and homeowners. Jason Ells, Senior Vice President of Custom Concrete, is passionate about recruiting and retaining employees who are happy, engaged, and eager to come to work. The key, he says, is to create a high-stakes winnable game for each employee. “They need to know what winning looks like, what their role in winning the game is, how it’s achievable, and that, at the end of the day, you have their back,” says Ells. “If you think of a time in your career when you felt most engaged, I promise you it was when you thought you were winning.” Employees become apathetic, complacent, disengaged, and disenfranchised when they don’t feel personally invested in their jobs. This is why communication is so vital. Ells suggests employers meet with their personnel weekly or daily rather than monthly or quarterly.
“It’s connecting those dots between what the employee is doing and where the company is going,” says Ells. Christina Garten, owner of Christina’s Complete Clean, notes that as her company has grown, she has increasingly asked for employee input. For instance, she has learned her staff values flexible scheduling, weekly pay, direct deposit, and electronic assignment notification. “We have a glass wall where we invited employees to list things they wanted us to continue and discontinue, as well as suggestions for improvement,” says Garten. “They filled up the walls!” By giving employees a voice and enabling them to take ownership of their careers, workplace morale inevitably improves. According to Ells, employees engage when they mentally and emotionally understand the purpose, which then manifests itself into productivity that moves the company forward. Connect with Home Artisans of Indiana online at homeartisans.com to learn more.

ACo:
Indoor Air Quality & Your Floors WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW COULD BE HURTING YOUR FAMILY
VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS – gasses given off by a number of sources – are everywhere; the trick is reducing them inside our homes where they are much higher. ACo is proud to partner with Shaw Floors to offer safe and envirornmentally-freindly flooring options.

We’re constantly made aware of issues related to outdoor air quality; our weather apps alert us to high pollen counts and Knozone Action Day alerts tell us when it’s best to stay indoors, so, we stay inside. But could the air quality inside our homes be as bad or even worse than the air outdoors? And could our flooring be contributing to poor air quality we breathe inside? Yes and yes. The flooring our babies crawl on, our pets pad across, and our bare feet shuffle over could be emitting volatile organic compounds that can contribute to a number of health issues. But not Shaw flooring. Shaw flooring comes with the FloorScore Certification, the most recognized indoor air quality certification for hard surface flooring materials. Having the FloorScore certification means that the flooring product has been independently certified under stringent standards as a product that will contribute to good indoor air quality. In other words, the FloorScore certification means healthier, cleaner air. And that means healthier babies, pets, and the rest of us. “Shaw is known for being green,” said Todd Moretto, Sales and Design Consultant with ACo.” “They use recycled products, no formaldehyde, are ortho-phthalates free, have low off-gasses, and they have a great FloorScore.” Volatile organic compounds – gasses given off by a number of sources – are everywhere; the trick is reducing them inside our homes where they are much higher. Formaldehyde is one of the most common such compounds, found in many building materials like plywood, particleboard and glues. Other sources of these compounds include the burning of fuels (gas, wood, and kerosene), and tobacco products. They can also come from personal care products like perfume and hair spray, cleaning agents, paints, varnishes, and hobby supplies. Ortho-phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic and other materials flexible but have been shown to alter hormone levels and cause serious health issues. Since the concentrations of all of these compounds are higher indoors than outdoors, we do things like open windows, replace filters,
and keep dangerous chemicals out of reach of children. But these compounds are nearly impossible to get rid of entirely, which may be why in the last few years more and more clients have been asking for ortho-phthalate-free flooring, Moretto said. “People are concerned about the products that go in their homes, so when it comes to a greener, healthier flooring option, Shaw is head and shoulders above other major brands.”

“At Shaw, we fundamentally believe that everyone should have access to safe, sustainable products for their homes and workspaces,” said Troy Virgo, director, sustainability and product stewardship at Shaw. “The effort matters because people matter.” ACo is proud to partner with Shaw Floors to give you a home with flooring that is not only beautiful, but also safe and environmentallyfriendly. HAMILTON HOMES:
A Custom Home That Reflects Your Taste, Personality & Lifestyle by Matt Keating / photos by Nancy Wood
Hamilton Homes Founder Rick Hamilton says every homeowner working with his company knows exactly what they are getting from start to finish. From the initial planning stages of a house, all the way to the moment clients walk into their dream home, the Hamilton Homes team stays with a homeowner every step of the way. “One of the many key things I stress is the fact that we are very transparent,” Hamilton said. “Each project has its own checking account where the client sees every invoice, and they always know where they are on a contract.” Clients also pick every product they want for the build. “The client looks at everything from selecting a house lot, to the design, the exact brick they want, to the stone and roofing that is the best for them,” Hamilton stated. “We listen to what homeowners want and need from a custom home, and build one exclusively to reflect a person’s tastes, personality, and lifestyle. We make it a truly distinctive custom home.” Hamilton Homes, Indianapolis, always makes sure the right choice for the homeowner is a priority. Their distinctive custom home design, combined with an unyielding commitment to excellence, creates homes that surpass homeowners’ expectations. “We are also well known for building structures so that there is no water infiltration,” Hamilton said. “We work with engineering consultants to make sure a home is built to prevent water damage.” Hamilton Homes also does home remodeling to customize and upgrade current living quarters to a space that will fulfill a homeowner’s dreams. “From a simple kitchen or bathroom expansion to an entire guest house or a whole-home addition, our team rises to meet any challenge,” Hamilton said. highest quality they can be,” says Hamilton. “McComb/Pella Windows & Doors always does an excellent job,” Hamilton continued. “They have the absolute best products, and Ryan Lee, trade specialist with McComb/ Pella, is outstanding. Their windows are energy efficient and enhance a home’s appearance.” Hamilton noted that McComb/Pella has designers that review window and door ideas during in-home consultations and determine exactly what homeowners need and want from their replacement windows or doors. McComb/Pella team members work alongside the homeowner to find Pella products that
match needs and align with a budget. “You will get the most protection for your home with products that provide maximum durability, wind resistance, and energy efficiency,” Hamilton said. “These products will not only improve the appearance of your home but will also reduce utility costs and increase value.” These are important factors to consider when building or remodeling your home. Contact Hamilton Homes to customize your current house or start from scratch to build a home that is truly a reflection of you and your family.

CONCRETE CAREERS
CUSTOM CONCRETE:
The Foundation for Quality: CUSTOM CONCRETE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS This year, Custom Concrete in Westfield is celebrating 50 years of business in Central Indiana. And while most builders and residents today are accustomed to seeing the blue and white Custom Concrete trucks and equipment on job sites or in transit during the morning or evening commute, the company we recognize is quite a bit different than how it started out. To understand the business today and its longevity throughout the region, it’s helpful to go back in time to 1969 where it all began. Joe Carr grew up in Arkansas and moved to Indiana after marrying his wife, Betty, to build a life for themselves and start a family. With his blue truck, he started his own business, Custom Framing, and started framing houses for Jim Walter Homes and later CAP Homes. When a poured wall company in Kansas City went out of business, Joe recognized the opportunity and bought a set of their steel forms. Overtime, Joe’s business grew into Custom Concrete and he and Betty led the company with the support of their four children, Tim, Tom, Jim and Missy. Joe believed in making opportunities, not just for himself and his family but for his business as well. He never stopped looking for ways to do business better, so he could offer a more quality product to customers. Most notably, Joe created the concept of the “ready to wear” basement, a completely turn-key style of concrete foundation work. “When you buy a shirt, you expect it to have all the buttons on, be starched, ironed and ready to wear,” Joe said. Joe’s legacy of hard work and dedication has only grown stronger over the years, even as the company grew from his property into a new headquarters in 2005. HEATING & COOLING
HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:
Increased Comfort & Efficiency, All Within Your Budget by Gabe Young
HAS IT ALL! The Daikin Fit System offers homeowners increased comfort, lower bills, and a smaller system that’s whisper quiet.
“It’s rare to say that a product can check all the boxes for a homeowner, but with the new Daikin Fit system, we can,” said Brady Wilson, General Manager at Homesense Heating and Cooling. “Homeowners can get increased comfort, lower bills, a smaller and quieter system, all within their budget.” Standard air conditioning systems are just on or off. And while standard air conditioning has benefitted homes and businesses, the high operating costs, loud operation, and hot and cold areas, leave room for improvement.
Homesense and Daikin Fit system has stepped into that space. “The biggest difference homeowners notice is when they walk upstairs and it’s not 5 to 10 degrees warmer, which they’ve grown accustomed to dealing with,” said Design Engineer Matt Patrick. “Then we hear about the whisper quiet operation, which is almost hard to compare to most systems that sound like an airplane taking off.” The Daikin Fit system has achieved all of this in one system by leveraging decades
of experience with inverter technology, the key ingredient to achieving both comfort and efficiency increases. When you combine the trusted local brand of Homesense Heating and Cooling with the Daikin Fit, it is not surprising that when homeowners need a new air conditioner they are turning to this solution. “When you put everything together: a locally owned company with high integrity, this unique product, and an industry leading 12-year warranty, we really believe
central Indiana homeowners can’t find a better fit for their homes this summer,” said Wilson. Reach out to Homesense for a zero cost, zero pressure evaluation to see if the Daikin Fit is the right fit for your home.

DIGITAL SIGHT & SOUND:
NEW 8K TV’S PROVIDE OUTSTANDING PICTURE by Matt Keating
8K TV is built to not only accept resolutions up to 8K, but scale every signal up with the most advanced technology to date.

Purchasing a high quality television can sometimes be a tough task. Just ask Nathan Robison, head sales engineer for Digital Sight & Sound. “The first question people have when I suggest our new 8K TV (a TV that has the ability to display images up to 8K resolution) for their family room or basement recreation area, is ‘What is the point of 8K, when 4K just came out, and we barely have any 4K programming as it is?’ Well, 4K TVs were released with 4K programming in mind, such as 4K streaming, 4K bluray players, and upcoming 4K channels,” Robison said. “They look great. However, so much of the programming we watch is still not 4K, and we are a ways off from that being true.” Robison noted that the problem is that televisions keep getting bigger and bigger, but people aren’t scooting their couches back. “This
process will continue to magnify the imperfections in any video signal,” Robison said. “So with the latest up conversion technology in the new 8K TVs, we will watch our favorite programming in the absolute best quality we have seen yet.” By doubling the number of pixels both vertically and horizontally, Robison says 4K TVs quadrupled the number of pixels from their 1080p predecessor. “And the 8K TV has done that once again,” Robison stayed. “However, the 8K TV is built to not only accept resolutions up to 8K, but scale every signal up with the most advanced technology to date.” Robison sees a lot of new technology pop up all the time, yet rarely does he find himself genuinely impressed. “The 8K TV impressed me, and the next primary viewing TV I purchase for my own home will be an 8K. These are going to be a very hot item, and we are already stocking them and shipping them out to happy homes.”
LIGHTING
BURTNER ELECTRIC:
Mirror and Lighting on the Wall… by Courtney Walker Pope
By this time of year many of us have traveled for first quarter business or Spring Break 2019 and stayed in hotels with spectacular vanity lighting and mirrors, putting our homes to shame. The glorious lighting found in hotel vanities can help with makeup application and hair styling, leaving guests feeling fresh, confident and ready to tackle their trip all in record time! Talk about self-love and self-care – Burtner Electric is here to help do just that in your home! Specific design elements certainly help with a bathroom’s ambiance, but lighting will seal the deal. There’s a lot to consider when planning for vanity lighting, so where should you start? COLOR RENDERING INDEX: Consider a CRI of 90+ (best being 100). This would include incandescent or halogen bulbs with the highest CRI and specific LED or fluorescent bulbs close behind. COLOR TEMPERATURE: 2700-3000 Kelvins is a great range. It keeps the color a warm temperature, which people are most familiar and comfortable with. ANGLE: If no diffuser is present around the bulb, angle the fixture 45 degrees toward the user’s standing position. FOOT CANDLES: For optimal makeup application and face care, apply 50-75 foot candles (units of light measurement) toward the user’s standing position. BUILT-IN: One of the trends with modern vanity lighting – lighting built-in to the mirror system! This provides all the above without having to consider much else.
ULTIMATE REFLECTION The right vanity lighting can make you feel fresh, confident and ready to start your day. Burtner Electric can help you choose the optimal lighting for your vanity.
Burtner Electric has been serving the community since 1986 and are true experts in the electrical and lighting industry. They are here to help optimize your home with vanity lighting updates! Burtner can be reached for free estimates at 317-773-7663 or at burtnerelectric.com.

ranklin Window & Door, the premiere dealer and distributor for the next generation of products, is changing the face of building in the Indianapolis area. Bringing the latest and greatest products, designs, and ideas to the market from manufacturers and designers, they are leading innovation.
“We’re always trying to raise the game, not only by bringing the best products to the market but by also being thought leaders so that we might help people live more expansively,” says Cori Brown, CEO and Window and Door Designer at Franklin. They’re also helping builders and architects think and work outside the box. For instance, Gary Nance, owner and CEO of Gary Nance Design, is always pushing the extreme of window glass. So, to facilitate a design, he calls Scott Brown, COO and New Construction Specialist at Franklin because he knows that unlike a typical supplier who may decline an idea based on difficulty or cost, Scott will find a way to make it happen. “We take a conceptual idea that an architect may have hand-sketched and find something that fits what the customer wants to accomplish,” says Scott. Franklin features Marvin Modern Products, the hottest new thing in residential design. With their Marvin Modern line, Marvin Windows and Doors has created a type of click-together system where the parts and pieces are assembled into multiple units yet maintains the sight line of one unit. “When you combine a sliding door with a big picture window, for instance, you can maintain that same sight line vertically and horizontally, which is a big deal in modern design for architects and designers,” says Scott. “The sight lines that you can achieve due to the narrowness and the strength of the product is revolutionary. No one has anything like it.” Only one dealer in any given major metro area is selected to carry the product, and Franklin was specifically chosen by Marvin to be their exclusive Modern dealer for the Indianapolis market. “Everyone wants the biggest piece of glass and the smallest frame, and Marvin has designed this system around that concept,” says Scott. The result is expansive views, tons of natural light, and a modern look from the street. Angela Nacinovich, of Angela Nacinovich Interior Design, has worked closely with Franklin. She’s currently working with a client who wanted to flood the home with as much natural light as possible. “By using the Marvin Modern line, we were able to create a dynamic statement that lets the view speak for itself,” says Nacinovich. Expansive glass invites the outside in, blurring the line between interior and exterior living spaces. “As a result, people don’t need to live in an 8,000 sq. ft. house to feel like they have an 8,000 sq. ft. house,” says Scott. For a long while the Indianapolis market has
centered around traditional design with homes that have a historical flair to them. On the other hand, contemporary modern has dominated the west coast scene. Only in recent years has that same contemporary style made its way into the Indianapolis market. As such, architects and builders are beginning to design buildings around a particular product such as Marvin Modern Windows. “A lot of the products on the west coast are not thermally sufficient for the Indiana climate,” says Scott. “Marvin Modern has designed a product that meets the thermal requirements for the Midwest but matches the modern designs on the coast.” It’s a game changer. Franklin is committed to bringing the best and most unique products to market, which changes the way people build and utilize their homes. “Our goal is to partner with builders and architects to source what they are trying to design,” says Cori, who estimates that many of these innovative products will eventually be integrated into SMART home technology where a homeowner can make a door slide open or closed with the simple press of a button. Franklin has recently brought in several cutting-edge European products through Lorenzo Finestre. Oikos world renowned security doors that are as beautiful as they are safe. Xinnix frameless interior doors for a clean, contemporary aesthetic, and thermally efficient MHB steel – the slimmest steel profile systems in the world. The Lorenzo Finestre showroom will be located at Indiana Design Center, 200 South Rangeline Road Suite 214, Carmel, Indiana. Nacinovich, like many others, appreciates Scott and Cori’s dedication to quality and innovative design. “I’m excited to see what they add in the future!” she says. For more information on the modern and state-of-theart products available from Franklin Window & Door, call (317) 993-3660 or visit franklinwindowanddoor.com.

KENT SHAFFER HOMES:
Choosing the Right
Custom Builder

Nestled in the heart of Zionsville, Holliday Farms, with its rolling landscapes, creeks, and ravines, has become the premiere community for homeowners who are looking to build a beautiful custom home in a picturesque location. With more than 300 lot reservations, there are currently 160 lots available. “It’s a great location, featuring nature trails, parks, and countless amenities. There is a clubhouse, tennis courts, swimming pool, and a Championship 18-Hole Golf Course and 9-Hole Executive Course designed by world-renowned architect, Pete Dye,” says Kristen Hale of Kent Shaffer Homes, noting that the 2020 Home Show will take place at Holliday Farms. Choosing a neighborhood is an important part of the process, as is selecting the right custom home builder. When shopping around, Shaffer encourages people to ask for the builder’s financial standings to protect their investment. “Home builders pop up, then maybe a couple of years later when the economy goes south, you don’t hear from them again,” says Hale. Kent Shaffer Homes, on the other hand, has been in business for 35 years. “We bring a hands-on approach to building, only taking on the number of projects we can personally manage ourselves,” says Hale. That typically results in erecting between 6-15 homes annually. “Kent and I supervise every project,” says Hale. “We’re the point of contact for our homeowners as we walk them through every step.” Sometimes during the design process, a client is unable to visualize what the home will look like so Kent Shaffer Homes provides 3D renderings of the floor plans, including rooms and elevation. This way
nothing is unforeseen, and homeowners can see what the finished project will look like before it starts. They also utilize online scheduling software that clients can log into. Throughout construction, all documents between the builder and the client are kept in that program so that paperwork can’t be lost. “They can see the schedule of who is going to be out there on a weekly basis or updates if we get delayed due to weather or some other reason,” says Hale. “It’s easy for everyone to communicate with everything being in one central spot that is easily accessible.” Clients also appreciate that Kent Shaffer Homes employs an interior decorator who helps guide them throughout the selection process. “When clients decide to build, I think one of the things that really stresses them out is all of the choices they have to make,” says Hale, noting that a homeowner can spend upwards of 100 hours making selections. Their interior designer, however, meets with the homeowner to get their sense of style and then pre-selects a handful of options per room to streamline the process. According to Hale, “It really cuts down on the time spent by the homeowner and makes the process easier and less overwhelming.” For more information on Holliday Farms or building your custom home with Kent Shaffer Homes, visit kentshafferhomes.com.

HOME REALTY
RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:
A Healthy Real Estate Market for Buyers and Sellers by Matt Keating
Phil Hotle, a Realtor with RE/MAX At The Crossing, is excited that quality, fairly-priced homes are selling fast within a few days in today’s market. “So far this year, the inventory of homes for sale was at a 3.5-month supply,” Hotle said. “It’s still well below the 6.0-month supply, which is considered a healthy balance between buyers and sellers. The good news is that inventory is three percent higher than a year ago. Hotle noted it’s not unusual to see homes sell for over their list price these days, all because of low inventory and high demand. “We expect these market conditions to continue until the pace of new home construction picks up, or more homes come on the market.” It’s important to keep in mind that employment and wages remain key to a healthy market as well. “The cost of a home is determined by three major components: price, mortgage interest rate and wages,” Hotle said. “Even though home prices are higher than before, wages have risen as well. The most important component in the cost equation – the mortgage rate – is dramatically lower than it was in the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s and 2000’s. It’s currently around 4.3 percent.” Hotle added that the big question is “Are consumers paying a greater percentage of their income towards their monthly mortgage payment today than previous generations? Surprisingly, the answer is no. Historically, Americans have paid just over 21 percent of their income toward their monthly mortgage payment. Today, they are paying 17.4 percent of their income toward their mortgage payment.” If you are buying or selling and want to make the most of the current real estate market, contact Phil Hotle at 317-919-8504 or photle@remax.net.

ALLISONVILLE NURSERY GARDEN & HOME:
Spring Spruce Up Allisonville Nursery Shares Tips on Transforming Your Space for Spring by Christy Heitger-Ewing
After enduring the long brutal winter and fickle first days of spring, we are elated that fullon spring has officially arrived. As Scott Bardash, marketing director at Allisonville Nursery Garden & Home, says, “People are so ready for it!” Thrilled to usher in a new warmer season, homeowners are eager to freshen up their landscaping by utilizing container gardens filled with bright, blooming flowers. “Container gardens can go anywhere,” says Bardash, noting that they look great as groupings as well. “Mixed containers provide a big splash of color and are a relatively inexpensive way to always have something fresh.” A beautiful option is the bobo hydrangea, which is constantly covered with white blooms. A bonus: it stays compact and dwarf so it never gets overgrown and out of hand. “Bobo hydrangea looks wonderful with boxwoods,” says Bardash, who also mentions a new rose called At Last (like the song) that has orange flowers and a sweet fragrance. Not only is it easy to care for but it also blooms profusely. To energize a home’s interior, Bardash recommends adding bright, bold throw pillows and other decorative spring accents. Doing so is especially easy these days since neutral paint colors are currently trending. “The benefit is that you can easily change the seasonal feel of a room by changing out a couple of pieces,” says Bardash. Artwork with vibrant floral shades will also make a space feel like springtime. “And don’t overlook switching your candles and scents,” says Bardash. “Fresh florals or natural grassy scents will help get you in the mood for spring.” Visit Allisonville Nursery Garden & Home for your spring essentials at 11405 Allisonville Road in Fishers, or visit them online at allisonvillegarden.com.

KITCHEN TRENDS

5 BIG KITCHEN TRENDS
for
2019
We love a good trend forecast! It’s exciting to see how homeowners are choosing to integrate new and different options into their decor to enhance style, functionality, and performance. So, what are the hottest kitchen trends of 2019?
4 0 H AV E N

More Drawers
More Functional Storage
Less is More
One mega-trend is the desire to create a more streamlined, clutter-free space. To this end, people are choosing deeper, wider drawers instead of kitchen cabinets with doors. They’re more accessible, making it easier to reach an item when you need it while offering practical storage options. We’ve all had to stretch and strain to grab a spice or a dish that’s way in the back of an upper cabinet! More integrated drawers solve one kitchen problem.
On a similar note, cabinets are becoming more practical. Features like pull-out and roll-out trays and shelves make it easier to access kitchen essentials. Pantry cabinets are also making a big splash, and several models feature sliding and pull-out shelves so finding that must-have ingredient is a breeze. We’re seeing lots of rustic wood for a homey, classic, and ageless appeal.
Simple, streamlined, and clean is no doubt a top kitchen trend of 2019. How are homeowners paring down on clutter and creating gorgeous style? Many are opting for fewer wall cabinets and even eliminating upper cabinets completely. Bold! It certainly is. Removing or designing your kitchen without upper cabinets does open up the space, making it appear larger, airier, and far less crowded.

Handle-less Cabinets These kitchen cabinets do not have traditional hardware; instead, they have channels, or special grooves, that allow for easy opening. The benefit is – you guessed it – a more streamlined look and feel for this important space. Plus, you won’t bump your hip or snag your sweater on handles or knobs anymore!
Open Shelving and Metal Shelving Another option that many homeowners are pursuing is open cabinets. These too, create a more strealined aesthetic look, allowing you to display interesting dishware and other items, while helping you reduce clutter. While wood is the traditional choice (and still a gorgeous one) for open shelving, we’re also seeing more metal. This helps create that sleek aesthetic and adds a little spice to your kitchen.
These top kitchen trends are not just flashes in the pan. They will endure and help you create a look that stands the test of time beautifully, so you can love where you live for years to come. If you are feeling inspired to update and streamline your kitchen, contact ACo at (317) 688-1872 for a free in-home design consultation.

CUSTOM HOMES
G&G CUSTOM HOMES:
A Stellar Wine Cellar by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Leah Tribbett
At his previous home, Jay Jaffe had a wine cellar that was 18 feet deep and 6 feet wide, with racks on both sides. Though the space was utilitarian in terms of storing bottles, making space for people was a different story. “There was no room for anyone to congregate. I’d have a party, and six or seven people would stand in the aisle with nowhere to sit or move,” recalls Jaffe. So, when he built his new home with Joe Garcia of G&G Custom Homes, he designed a wine cellar that was spacious enough so guests could comfortably hang out or even enjoy a meal. Garcia and his team worked with Jaffe to incorporate everything the owner wanted, including the space necessary to hold wine glasses, magazines, corks, and other accessories. “We love coming up with unique ideas that we have either not done before or can tweak to make it their own based on how [the owner] lives,” says Garcia. “That’s the great thing about building 4 2 H AV E N
custom homes. Every house, every person is different so it’s nice to come up with something new that fits their needs and lifestyle.” Jaffe is pleased not only with the quality craftsmanship of the project but also with the constant communication between himself and Garcia, as well as the work of the crew. “Joe is very accountable. Even if something happens during building that’s not his mistake, he’ll fix it,” says Jaffe. “I have the best team in the business. I am only as good as the team I have with me,” adds Garcia. DRAPERY STREET:
Exterior Roller Shades & Bug Screens for a Better Outdoor Living Experience
There’s nothing quite as relaxing as sitting on the back patio, sipping a glass of wine, and enjoying the views… that is until the bugs start biting, the sun gets in your eyes, and the heat becomes overwhelming. There is actually a simple solution to combat these problems so you can fully enjoy your patio. That solution is exterior roller shades and bug screens. We wanted to offer our clients a great outdoor product so we spent an expansive amount of time searching for and testing exterior window treatments. We are excited to announce that Drapery Street customizes and installs exterior roller shades and bug screens. HOW THEY’RE DIFFERENT The exterior roller shades we offer not only look great, they deliver several benefits including: A substantial reduction in sun glare and harmful UV rays without blocking views. THE SMART PERGOL A:
An Aha! Moment
4 6 H AV E N
Ten years ago, Claudio and Anna Bertolini had a “regular” pergola installed at their home. It turned out to be useless. Their patio was always either too hot or too wet to use, and it seemed like every time they planned a cookout it rained. Fast-forward five years to their discovery of louvered roof pergolas and the “Aha! Moment” becomes clear! Upon hearing a friend describe a pergola with the ability to angle, open and close, they were intrigued. Within a month of visiting the manufacturer’s plant, StruXure Outdoors (at that time called Arcadia Louvered Roof) came and retrofitted their existing pergola. “To this day, we feel this was the best home improvement project we have done,” Anna says. Imagine planning a cookout a month in advance with no worry of the weather? Burgers and steaks rain or shine! In fact, the product sensors react to rain and can be set to automatically close the louvers. Not to mention, a smart phone operation allows you to program the system and automatically open, angle, or close the louvers throughout the day. The hottest day of the year is no match when the louvers are angled, providing full shade with the heat venting out. According to Anna, “After more than four and a half years, we still love that this product doesn’t take away the light from our kitchen like a permanent roof would.” Not having to pay each year to get the wooden slats and purlins painted is a huge plus: maintenance free is the only way to go! In the fall, the louvers can be closed and with the fireplace lit the patio becomes a cigar room. A go-to place to watch sports and just generally unwind. In the winter, it’s not necessary to find storage for the outdoor furniture. So, the patio still looks pretty, and you can grill without having to shovel snow. After directly experiencing and loving the product, the Bertolini’s experienced another “Aha! Moment,” deciding to start their own business, The Smart Pergola in the Indiana market. In January 2015, they exhibited at their first Indianapolis Home Show. The louvered roof pergola was a showstopper. Aha! Last January, The Smart Pergola entered their 5th year of operation with over 250 local installations. The Smart Pergola product is in homes, restaurants and various commercial spaces – a truly unique pergola. Transforming a once too wet or too hot space with The Smart Pergola will create one of the most enjoyable spaces in your home. If you are feeling inspired to have your own “Aha! Moment” and enjoy your patio no matter the weather, call The Smart Pergola at 317-682-4072 or visit them online at thesmartpergola.com.

DALTILE:
Beige, Grey, White – How About Some
COLOR? by Courtney Walker Pope
We might be rounding the corner of a long spanned neutral palette in the home! Are you excited?! Daltile works closely with Color Marketing Group (CMG) which identifies the direction of color and design trends, forecasting one to three years in advance for color-related products and services. These color trends translate through all types of consumer goods including automobiles, fashion, furnishings and of course, ceramic tile! One industry influences the other, making color dynamic to our culture. We all want to be mindful of the market and resale, but there are subtle, classic ways to incorporate color in tile and Daltile has that product for us!
CONTRAST One easy way to incorporate color is through contrasting wall and floor tile. Say the choice is classic white subway tile on the walls, consider Daltile’s wide array of color options in the Color Wheel Collection in Mosaics or Linear for the floor!
ENCAUSTIC We have featured encaustic, or concrete tiles, before. They are another great way to bring pattern, warmth and color to any fireplace surround, backsplash, or even floor!
CONFECTIONARY A new designer favorite Daltile line is Confectionary. With colors that pay tribute to the 1950’s, this tile will rock your taste buds and leave you longing to find a way to integrate them.
