WITH HELP FROM THE DINING DOLLS Grabbing a bite to eat in LA is a never ending opportunity to discover something new. Taking advantage of the plethora of culinary options at their fingertips, Stephanie and Lula, share their foodie adventures through their Instagram page The Dining Dolls. We caught up with the sisters to get the tastiest tips on where to dine in LA.
Fried chicken is really having a moment right now and we’re loving it! Also, people are switching over to milk alternatives such as oat milk and house-made almond/ macadamia nut milk for all their coffee needs. It’s a great alternative worth trying because it adds a nice consistency that’s a bit thicker than milk with a nutty and sweet flavor.
What lead you both to start The Dining Dolls? We have always been passionate about food, and cooking from a young age. It was very natural and exciting for us to start sharing with the world all of our culinary experiences, delicious adventures and knowledge we’ve learned along the way. We are grateful to live in Los Angeles where the food scene and talent is unmatched. It’s our absolute joy to be able to spread the word and to showcase all of the incredible cuisine, along with the ultra talented chefs that work hard to innovate, inspire and feed not only our bodies but our souls. What are a few LA food trends we should know about?
Is there a cuisine you enjoy blogging about the most? There is not one cuisine we prefer over another, we really love all the diverse cultures and cuisine that this city has to offer. It’s the only way to keep expanding our palettes. What’s the best place(s) to grab tacos? BS Taqueria has to be our favorite, for many reasons. They have traditional tacos that are as good as any. But in addition, they have unique combinations with different ingredients and flavor profiles unlike any other Mexican restaurant. They even have vegetarian tacos that won’t make you miss the carne asada and their churros are out of this world. What’s the best place(s) to grab donuts? We’d have to say Sidecar donuts. They’re on a different level. How has your blog changed the way you eat at restaurants? The only thing that’s changed is now our camera eats first before anybody else. Are there any quintessential LA restaurants you’d recommend to first time visitors? If you’re on the West Side, the Gjusta and Gjelina family of restaurants by chef Travis Lett have perfected their interpretation of LA cuisine. You’ll be in for a real treat. If you’re in Downtown, visiting one of chef Josef Centeno’s restaurants is an absolute must. Our favorite is Orsa & Winston, a restaurant that we frequent a few times a week.

Is there anything surprising you’ve learned about food blogging since you started The Dining Dolls? We’ve learned that people in hospitality and restaurant industry are the best people! What’s the most mind-blowing dish you’ve experienced in LA? That’s a hard one because there’s been so many dishes that are shockingly good but if we had to pick, it would be the Big Mec Burger from Petit Trois. It’s a double Cheeseburger with brioche buns which comes smothered in Foie Gras infused red wine Bordelaise, it’s pure decadence. What’s the most Instagram-worthy restaurant for someone looking to impress their friends? That would have to be Bestia. With a long list of well deserved accolades, their extensive menu of rustic Italian cuisine is always executed to perfection and every single one of the dishes is as carb worthy and photogenic as the next. Just plan ahead, it’s one of the hardest places to get a reservation. Is there a signature LA dish? The coveted Avocado Toast.

How did you get involved in the furniture design industry? My undergrad at UCLA was my design foundation within the Art & Architecture department. I still do not know where my future talents lie, as I have curated exquisite high profile events throughout South Florida to owning a landscape and graphic design company in Los Angeles to finding a niche in interiors for the past decade. What are some of the top selling products among shoppers? Roche Bobois has been around since the 50’s and heavily inspired by the Bauhaus designers such as Minvielle, Steiner and Airbourne. Being a well branded international powerhouse, Roche Bobois first settled into north America in the early 70’s. When clients see the evolution of the ‘Iconic Mah Jong’ or many other collections over the years, each decade has its own unique time stamp in design history. What is your favorite piece(s) from the Roche Bobois collection? The Mah Jong which illustrates the future for Roche Bobois, holds onto the handmade detailing of such a luxurious and simple design but with well-known designers from fashion houses of Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel and Missoni Home make it a unique player in terms of high-end furniture. What are a few of the popular trends occurring in home design? Bold color and expressions through your interiors. Each room can tell a fabulous story and more and more clients are willing to utilize interior designers or our inhouse design teams in our 3D studio to see where the professionals can bring a room or home to a new level. It’s very basic to show beige and every color has its purpose, but our job is to listen to the clients’ needs and see what they need first and then create a storyboard that can inspire them, and bringing color to a project does just that. What is your process to ensure each client has selected a piece ideal for them? Being a good listener and understBeing a good listener and understanding the dynamics of the
home or entertaining needs are essential to a good relationship. Some clients have had no budget for their pets and dedicated a 4k budget for a chic bed for there beloved fur ball. Other clients are either entertaining a ton of work functions or need a cozy modern retreat away from the city & work life. I also love to introduce my design contacts to see if they would work as an interior designer or architect as they can make the process seamless and have so many resources for any portion of the home remodel or updates. With the re-release of the Ozoo collection, which past collections would you like to see make a comeback? The Ozoo has always had a following and to see the complete desk back in production in the high-gloss plastics is inspiring. Design concepts of modeled indoor or
outdoor furniture was first introduced to the global market in the 60’s and never slowed down. I love where future design concepts are pushing technology with built in LED lighting or movable parts like any or our casegoods. We also have a few materials that are unique to Roche Bobois like the dynamic Aqua Table with its silky touch and fingerprint resistance. This material withstands scratches, abrasions, friction and dry heat. It is also extremely resistant to impacts, solvents and cleaning products. It has antibacterial properties that makes it easy to clean. FENIX NTM is also water-resistant and mold-resistant which is very unique for a dining surface. Roche Bobois is a vibrant departure of the Italian brands or American Mid-Century I have done over the past decade but I’m all about embracing new trends and color is my new best friend.

CEO – DESIGN EQUITY, INC. What would you characterize are the key characteristics of the classical SoCal Coastal home buyer? We are talking about an extremely discerning clientele that have a deep appreciation for art, architecture and nature alongside a very specific need for perfection and high construction standards. When looking to buy a home by the water, they are, by definition, buying a luxury product. As such, they expect every last detail to be addressed with the utmost scrutiny and care. They are typically not first time home buyers. In fact, in many instances they are buying their forever homes. Therefore, they have very well defined needs and expectations. How do you design homes that can be universally appealing for such discerning clientele? Despite meaningful differences in needs, there is a good bit of commonality amongst what the modern consumer appreciates - simplicity, elegance, visibility and very importantly

convenience. Lives have gotten infinitely busier and more stressful over the last several decades. Multitasking is the norm. Working from home is continuing to become more pervasive. Entertaining is less ostentatious and more woven into the daily fabric of our lives. As a simple manifestation, the modern kitchen is not only a functional space but a social space. A kitchen must be designed for much more than just the convenient culinary experience. Our designers develop empathy for our target consumer group and how they will interact with the house. That’s the first and crucially important step in the design that ensues. We focus a lot on what feelings we would like to evoke in the residents as they interact and spend time in the house. Most coastal buyers want to feel refreshed, energized, empowered, successful, hopeful and at peace when they come home. Our designers work with focus groups to create design elements that work alongside the beautiful natural elements, the awe-inspiring Pacific, in most cases, to generate those responses. They are adamant that everything, from the high ceilings designed for optimism, to the wall details for homey elegance, to the closet drawers for basic utility, from the infinite views upon entry, to how groceries will be carried inside, every minute detail contributes to the overall living experience. We are also pursuing a slightly different model, where we are not trying to make all the decisions for our consumers. We do the heavy
lifting, create the vision and the artistry and leave some of the finer details as blanks for the residents to fill suiting their lifestyles and needs How do you see the RE market trends pan out over the next several months? The interest rates and steady rise in home prices have affected affordability some. That said the So Cal economy is the strongest it has been in years and incomes are rising. Coastal properties with strong views and good designs are bucking the general market trends and are continuing to command a solid premium. Furthermore, the So Cal coastline is almost completely built out. There are a finite number of coastal homes that have a strong interest from three distinct groups - affluent residents of inland LA and OC; East Coast buyers that simply cannot get enough of our weather; and, International clientele – principally from Asia and Europe, that recognize So Cal as a combination of a stable and diversified economy; absolutely gorgeous scenery; and an environment that is very amenable and encouraging of different cultures and ways of lives. A rare combination anywhere in the world, that continues to make us very bullish on the So Cal coastline.
