This month the Supremacy Car Club, 808 & 702 and our Oahu community and ‘ohana come together with a food drive, show and shine cancer benefit for Kape Pedro on Sunday, April 7th at Keehi Lagoon Park. It’s the clubs 15th Annual Food Drive and always a great event. 9 Classes to enter including Best of Show, music, great raffles and food. Please bring canned goods and non-perishable food items to be donated to the Hawaii Food Bank. Come, bring your ‘ohana. Represent, relax, respect and have a great Sunday. It was Triple the Action, Triple the Fun at the Season Opener(s) at Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Sunday, March 17th as the March 10th Stock Car Races were rained out and moved to the 17th Hulacross & Motocross date for a Rainout Remix! So needless to say there was no shortage of action at every turn and plenty of ooohs and aaahs from the spectators. Hulacross, an Extreme Rally-X event proved to be everything it was advertised it was going to be as racers ran for points in this non-stop flag-2-flag, wheel-2-wheel competition. Action photographer, Nick Latulip gives us a look at this race that’s as hard on the drivers as it is on their vehicles. The TT style Motocross race up the ante with a $500 prize for Bikes & Quads and had racers charging hard for a nice payday. The next race for Hulacross is set for April 14th and will also feature stock car racing. When Jerry Martin of Kailua, Oahu purchased this 1952 Henry J his wife Debbi told him he must be nuts thinking he was going to turn this old heap into show car. But as time went on and the car started to take shape she started to really admire it. So much so that she asked Jerry to put the car in her name so he couldn’t sell it “like he always does” she says. The Henry J is a ’52 Corsair Deluxe with a ’51 grill. Jerry dechromed the rest of the stock body, frenched the headlights, removed the bumpers and filled the bracket holes. He then shaved the door handles before smoothing out the entire body and spraying the deep Black PPG single stage paint and buffed it to its mirror finish. The original frame was modified by Tony Carries with a Fat Mans Mustang II front end with Mustang Rack-n-Pinion up front and a Ford 9” rear end with 355 Posi Lock and triangulated set up out back. Drum brakes in the rear and disc brake in front take charge of stopping duty. Air ride suspension front and back make for a super car ride and can also put the Henry J in the weeds at the push of a button. Jimmy says they used about 40 feet of 1 x 2 box tubing throughout to beef up the original frame. The wheels are Budnik 15x6 up front wrapped in 185x55 rubber and 17x9 in the rear with 255 x 50 series rubber. Stainless brake lines and a stainless steel gas tank are also notable upgrades. The small block Chevy is a 355 from a ’80 Corvette rebuilt with a Doug Herbert Competition Kit. A roller valve train is topped with a set of early Corvette valve covers and the ignition is a MSD Billet unit with MSD Blaster coil and MSD wires. The intake is a polished Edelbrock unit as is the custom Edelbrock air cleaner. A Be Cool aluminum radiator keep things cool under the hood and the trick Serpentine pulley system from March connects the dots in style. Hooker headers, Flowmaster mufflers and chrome tips complete the custom exhaust. The Turbo 400 transmission has been rebuilt and upgraded by Ewa Auto Repair with shift kit and a Lokar shifter. The 30 inch drive shaft was fabricated by Driveline. The interior sports Honda front seats, custom center console and custom door panels all covered with black leather and gray suede with wool carpeting through out the interior and trunk. The custom dash also covered in black leather is filled with VDO gauges, Vintage Air/Heat, Air Ride Technologies digital gauges/switches and billet steering wheel hangs off a chrome Flaming River tilt steering column. Jimmy and Debbi’s ’52 Henry J has captured a good handful of awards since its completion, including a couple of Peoples Choice awards and Jerry also build a ’55 Chevy 2 door post for Debbi that she’s very happy with. Jimmy says his next project will be something odd like a 49 Packard. He says they look like a bathtub or a big roach! Pro Street maybe? Can’t wait to see that one

The 808 Mx/Atv Association held it season opener on March 9, 2013 at its Mx?Atv track at the Hilo Drag Strip facility. The riders were pumped and we had an awesome day of racing. Brian Dominguez, a rider all the way from Oakley, California joined us. He was able to give our riders an unexpected challenge and is taking some medals home for souvenirs. He got a 1st place in the Open class and a 2nd place in the 250cc Expert. Our next race is set for Saturday April 13. Gates open at 7:00am. Sign in and tech inspection at 7:30 - 8:15am and the Riders Meeting 8:45am. Practice is at 9:00am and Racing starts by 10:00am. The Big Island Auto Club held its Season Opener “Take II” drags under mostly cloudy skies at the Hilo drag Strip on March 16th! The Take II drags were in order because of rain in February at the scheduled Season Opener, and with everyone in attendance with fingers crossed managed to pull off a half day of racing on Saturday running a single MEGA Bracket for whomever wanted to race for a cash purse and a Jr. Dragster race! When the smoke cleared in the Jr. Dragsters is was Daesha Tobara of Mt. View taking the win with a 10.24 sec/52mph dash with Nicole Miprano of Hilo finishing in the Runner Up spot with her 15.2 sec/46mph pass. In the finals of the MEGA Bracket winner Tommy Spencer of Keaau in his Chevy S-10 took the prize money with his 9.18 sec/140mph run over the red-light time of 9.96 sec/140mph pass by Gary DeRego of Honokaa in his Chevy Nova.

Best reaction time of the race was Sean Kelly of Kailua-Kona is his VW Dune Buggy as he clicked off a 0.003 light! CRUZZIN with the LUGNUT HUSTLERS 4th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Car Show
Hustlers Las Vegas is big on Saint Patrick’s Day! And on Saturday, March 16th in conjunction with the 47th Annual Sons of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival filled the Water Street District in Henderson with hundreds of classic cars, hot rods and customs! The theme of this year’s parade was The Harp and the Shamrock where the public got its first glimpse of some of the cars that would be on display in the Car Show from noon – 5pm. At the awards the Hustlers also gave away a complete engine they’ve been promoting at their last couple of events. There was lots of entertainment, giveaways and great food was everywhere! St. Baldrick’s Foundation, home of the head-shaving event was also on hand shaving heads to raise funds to help fight children’s cancer. It’s an easy and fun way to raise money for a very serious cause –like a walkathon, but without the blisters! ichard M. Jr., and Leilani Carvalho have their Baby Girl. Three baby girls – Tehani, Rylee, and a ’57 Oval Ragtop. In Hawaii we call these ’54 – ’57 Ovals – Baby Windows. Richard, originally from Ewa Beach, home of the 706 Ewa Beach VW Club, now resides in Aiea. Richard’s other VW is a ’90 sage green and white Vanagon sporting 18” x 8.5” Mercedes Benz S-Class wheels. Richard’s inspiration to get back into the VW scene was Leilani. Leilani’s daily driver is a Lexus GS300, but she wanted to cruise in a VW. What the wife wants, the husband must fetch, so Richard anxiously obliged. And the partnership build begun. Two years ago Richard discovers a descent ’57 Baby Window in Ewa Beach. It was not in his theme so the transformation begins. Roof rack is removed. Radio delete was filled with an original and operational Motorola M7. Bumper guards are sold at the Vintage VW Club of Hawaii swap meet. Wheels are replaced with Billet Specialties Pro Touring 19” x 10” in the rear wrapped with 245/ 35 19 and 18” x 7” up front with 205/35 18. The tired 1200cc was replaced with a 1300cc 36 hp Judson powered mill assembled by ‘Dr. Lani Hood’ of Ma’ili on the West side of Oahu – home of the West Side Ka’a Hui Bradahood VW Club. Richard did the painstaking research in Judson conversion. Thanks to Matthew Kenney of Aircooled Research in Paso Robles, CA the specific combination was precisely blueprinted. Mike Bucchino, Sr. from the East Coast assisted in the hard-to-find fuel lines and the bypass oil filter lines. The Supercharger is from George Folchi,
also from the East Coast. Some notables include that the supercharged engine is stroker, with straight cut gears, stage 2 cam, late case, heavy duty oil pump and a 1.5 quart deep sump. The 4” narrowed front beamnup front is fitted with Wilwood disc brakes from Airkewld at all four corners. The Exhaust and Club Sport Shifter are from Vintage Speed. After the install the fine-tuning was left to Kalihi Valley’s and VW Club of Hawaii Executive Board Member Gordon Ortiz, Sr. Richard is no newbie to cars. Richard Carvalho, Sr. has had many many cars but his current cruiser is a ’32 chopped 5-window coupe. And, Raymond Carvalho has had several lowriders, but currently has a clean silver and green Myers Manx. So, the car enthusiasts rush runs in the Carvalho veins. Coupled with Richard being the Manager for Global Auto Repair by day, this work in progress Baby Window is on its way to hopefully a HotVWs Magazine feature when it’s finally to Richard’s standards. Richard, Leilani, Tehani and Rylee cruise the Fridays Pearl City Gateway Center and the Saturdays Bleizn FX Wendy’s Cruise Nights, and are active members and participants of the VW Club of Hawaii events. Richard and Leilani discovered that the VW community is truly an Ohana oriented organization to the core as they’ve developed lasting relationships. Richard and Leilani’s BABY GIRLS are proud of their Baby Window, and are enjoying the ride with their ‘ohana build. And be sure to stay tune as we revisit BBYGRL in the near future with the finished product.

Sacramento Raceway Park The PSCA’s 14th season continued at Sacramento Raceway Park on March 22-24th with the PSCA/Chris Alston’s Chassis Works Nor-Cal Nationals! The PSCA event featured 6 Heads-Up, 4 Brackets and 2 Index classes and was headlined with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association, a 5 second door-slammer class with cars rocketing down the quarter mile at 255+mph. “We’re very excited to return to Northern California,” said PSCA President Mel Roth. “Dave Smith and his staff are an amazing group who are just as thrilled as we are to put on a great show for the fans in California’s capital city. Our staff and our racers are chomping at the bit to put on a great show and bring our brand of drag racing back to the area.” Making it into the Winners Circle in the Mickey Thompson Tires “Wild Street” class is Winner Artis Houston in his ’71 Chevy Nova. Don Jones almost won 2 classes and PSCA’s $500 “Double Up” Bonus by Winning Ross Pistons “Triple Index”, then a Runner-Up Finish in Mustang Madness in his ’02 Mustang! Sergio Felipe in his ’65 Mustang won the Accufab Mustang Maddness. In the Alpha Omega Swiss “Hot Street” Tony Aneian in his ’68 Camaro won the top prize while the Shelby Goodyear “Open Comp” class was won by Kyle Thorpe in his ’91 Mustang. The Vortech Superchargers “Outlaw 8.5” Winner Casey VanTol took the class in his beautiful ’64 Chevelle and Doug Sikora took the MagnaFuel “Outlaw 10.5” in his ’00 Mustang and the MagnaFuel Xtreme Drag Radial was won by Robert Barrios in his ’70 Nova. You want it when? That was everyone’s initial reaction when Slade Isabel of Puna decided about 4 weeks before Labor Day that he wanted to ride something other than his Heritage for the big LD run! This meant every second had to count, there was no room for error and the biggest challenge would probably be getting parts needed for the build shipped in time to make it all come together. OK, so with the help of the crew at Freaky Tiki Customs, they thought, yeah “we got this!” Oh but wait (what there’s more?) yup, you see Slade was working on the other side of the Big Island at the time and only came home on the weekends. What? So Slade was texting his wife Debra and Lloyd from Friki Tiki having them hunt down the parts and accessories needed and enlisting all his friends and family to pitch in. The frame and 30 over front end came from his buddy Kona in San Diego and was setup for a right hand drive and a 300-rear tire. Slade and Lloyd wanted to change that up though, and modified the frame for the Left Hand Drive and then used a 250-rear tire to compensate for modification. The frame was taken to Patrick Crivello for some custom machine work. Pat’s first question, “so when do you need this by? Not labor day I hope!” Pat only had enough time to set up the wheels, mill the spacers and caps and it was back at Freaky Tiki Customs. In the meantime, Debra and Lloyd went down to Automotive Supply Center to pick out the “green” paint that Slade had wanted. And as you can see, they didn’t come home with green. Instead they found this really nice pink, I mean magenta with micro sequence. Lloyd tells us “I was spraying on Saturday and clearing on Tuesday!” On the Monday in between Greg Kobayashi was laying down the pin stripping, lettering and gold leaf. This is where the bike got its name. When Greg asked if the bike had

a name, the only thing they could come up with for the quick build was “Rush ‘Um!” And now the rush was on to put it all together in 3 days to make the LD weekend run. The front end was fitted with a set of clip on bars, GMA hand controls and rims that Slade and Debra had found on eBay a while back. The rebuilt 80 cube was reworked by Nohea Huddleston and features 10.1 Wiseco pistons and 510 cam. A 6-speed trans with 3-inch open belt drive get the power to the 250rear rubber. On Thursday Dayton from Machine Works made the custom seat pan and mounts and the headlight bracket and Jim Shaw dropped everything to upholster the seat. All of this and the countless hours almost around the clock with help from Chris, Ellsworth, Jarod, Nelson, Gabe, Juergen, and Deighton and the traditional start up ritual with everyone on hand was at 11:30pm. Don’t know if they’ll ever do that again, ok who am I kidding, they probably will. But if anyone can do it, it’s these guys and gals at Freaky Tiki Customs. “Rush ‘Um!”

The Hilo Motor Speedway Association was out kickin’ up dirt again (and a bunch of dust) at their second race of the 2013 season on March 9th at the Hilo Motor Speedway dirt oval next to Hilo Drag Strip. A good turn out of both racers and spectators made for a great day of racing. Dry weather had the water truck busier than it’s been in a while with dust control. The freshly re-surfaced and groomed track made for fast paced action from the get-go to the mains. In the Bomber class Tiffany Perreira spanked the boys with a 1st place finish in Heat 2 and the Main Event to take the top spot on the podium followed by Martin Hesse in 2nd and Jesse Boone in 3rd. CruiseNight Bleizn FX Cruise Night event “Raise The Roof” at Pearlridge Center on Saturday night, March 16th was another awesome event where auto enthusiast from all over Oahu with just about every kind of ride you could think of from hot rods and street rods to VW’s and imports, exotics to classic American muscle gathered to show off their rides and just hang out swapping stories. Show goers love Cruise Night too with not only a trip down memory lane for many, but also a look at 21st Century technology that’s built into these classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Photographer g Nick Latulip The First Hawaiian International Auto Show rolled into the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu March 22nd – 24th with tons of automotive excitement for the entire family including a chance to win $100,000! Now that’s what I call going “green!” Yes! In addition to be able to climb behind the wheel and “kick-the-tires” of hundreds of new 2013 and 2014 models, attendees had the chance to register to win $100,000, courtesy of First Hawaiian Bank and the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association. The new technology that improves safety and entertainment value of today’s vehicles such as the Inflatable Rear Seat Belts were a big hit. When these new air bag belts deploy, they provide added protection for both children and adults in the back seat. With smartphones quickly overtaking the mobile market, many auto manufactures have developed Apps to integrate with their vehicles. Owners can lock/unlock doors, check their tire pressure and even remotely start the vehicle. Some electric cars like the Nissan Leaf, enable drivers to even check the car’s charge through their App. Pretty neat stuff! One of my favorites is the Engine Start-Stop Systems, which improves fuel economy anywhere from 5 – 15% and reduces emissions by automatically shutting down and restarting the engine to minimize idling. And while seeing it all is great, a test drive would really be nice right? Well at this years show they had you covered with a test drive roadway course around the convention center. A vehicle expert would accompany you to highlight the model’s features and as an added bonus, each participant got a free Papa John’s pizza while supplies lasted. There were also local car clubs with displays of antiques, muscle cars, VW’s, lowriders and tricked out tuners, plus a Multi-Million Dollar Exotic Car display of some of the most unique, fastest and most expensive vehicles from Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and Bentley, courtesy of JN Automotive Group. On this March Madness we, vintage/classic Volkswagens, too, have a sweet sixteen. As a sequel to the VW Club of Hawaii’s Shaka Weekend / Hawaii Food Bank Drive at Ala Moana Beach Park Car Show each Labor Day weekend, each of the class winners come together under the Hawaii Convention Center to showcase their ‘kauwelas’ for tens of thousands of Hawaii car enthusiasts to admire and reminisce. We were paid a surprise visit by the President of Northwest Volkswagen Club Brent Moore and Heidi. Irene Ligsay-Vereze graciously hosted and spread the VW Aloha to Brent and Heidi who were excited to see our VDubs. Again, the common passion just brings us together. Notable credits that made this event possible were VW Club of Hawaii Pres. Todd Matsumoto, Vice Pres. Angie Cariaga, and Executive Board Members Gordon Ortiz, Sr., Jeff Marzo, Kevin Meyer, Hannibal Cabacungan, and Geri Salvador. StudebakerVACATION
Show
The “Studebaker Vacation” show hosted by the Tumbleweeds Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club tumbled into Laughlin, Nevada at the Tropicana Express Hotel on March 15, 16 & 17th and was open to all American and European cars and pick-up trucks 1972 and older in addition to ALL Studebakers and Avanti’s. The three-day event included a Friday cruise to Sonic Drive-In in Bullhead City, followed by Saturday’s car show where entries competed for Peoples Choice awards in their respective classes. The show also featured a swap meet with many great finds all followed by Saturday nights banquet. On Sunday it was another cruise, this time to Oatman, Arizona with plenty of time for cruisers to check out some neat places along the way. KRP OVAL KALAELOA RACEWAY PARK
It was an action packed Season Opener at Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu with stock car racing at the Valve Service Stock Car Oval Track. The Season Opener originally scheduled for March 10th was a rain out, so stock car racing was moved to the 17th and was dubbed the Rainout Remix! It was a full day jam-packed with excitement with Stock Car racing, and the already scheduled Hulacross and Motocross races. From the Cruzer-Bruzers to the Winged Sprints everybody got their moneys worth. Talk about excitement, it’s was non-stop wheel-2-wheel action that Oahu fans and racers have been starving for years! Sunday, April 14th is the next scheduled race and will combine stock car racing and Hulacross on the in-field. Gates open at 8am with racing to follow. $10 park admission, kids 5 and under Free! NHRA drag racing is back in full swing for 2013 at Maui Raceway Park with the Valley Isle Timing Association’s March Meet, Maui Style at Pu’unene. The weather was a bit gloomy, but racers and race fans were out looking for some thrills with the Summit Pro Series and the Jr. Dragster program. In the finals of the Summit Super Pro, Kurt Buland in his Chevy II ran right on his dial in of 10.82 to beat John Hultquist in his Nova who ran just a bit to fast and broke out. In the Summit Pro it was Nicole Amoral taking the win over Nestor Cuadro and in the Summit Sportsman it was a classic Chevy vs. Ford showdown in the finals with Ivan C. Ho in his Camaro edging out Patrick Nugent in his Mustang. It was girl power in the Summit Pro Bike class where Marci Calvillo on her Buell beat the competitive field and Ezra Wansor in the finals to take home the gold! In Jr. Dragster competition it was a clean sweep for the Yamashita ‘ohana with Kylee Yamashita beating Kayla in the finals! Keane Lee won the Burn Out competition in his Blazer and the crowd went nuts! It was go till broke or blow the tire which ever came first. The rear end let go but not before Keane filled the entire burn out area with clouds of smoke! Next race is Saturday, April 20th. Test & Tune at 2:30pm with the Jr. Dragsters at 4:30 and Summit Pro Series at 5:30pm. The April Event Special will be a $25 Street Car Trophy Dash. General admission is $10, students and seniors are $8 and children 10 and under are free! 2013 marks 50 years of NHRA Drag Racing at Maui Raceway Park! Each year the Superspeedway at Las Vegas Motor Speedway host the NASCAR Weekend featuring 3 marquee events with Friday’s Stratosphere’s Pole Day, Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Sam’s Town 300 and Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Kobalt Tools 400. This years NASCAR Weekend ran March 8 – 10 with Friday’s practice and qualifying. Moring rain put on-track activities on hold but did not dampen the spirits of a young couple tying the knot with driver Carl Edwards in attendance. We’re not sure what Carl’s role was (witness, best man?) but the couple was Thomas Bensing and Kathy Weber. On Saturday morning the skies were still cloudy but there was rain and the track was almost dry and despite the heroic efforts of the speedway staff, Friday’s rain wiped out any activity on the track and cancelled qualifying sessions for Saturday’s Sam’s Town 300 and Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400. Winner Sam Hornish led 114 of 200 laps to become the first driver to drive the new Ford Mustang to victory in the Nationwide Series. It was also the first NASCAR victory for Penske Racing at LVMS. Hornish was able to hold off Kyle Busch to win by 1.1 seconds. On Sunday, defending Sprint Cup Series Champion Brad Keselowski lead the field to green at high noon for the 267-lap race. Forty-three drivers raced for their share of the $6.4 million total purse. At the checkered flag it was Matt Kenseth with the win as he was able to hold off Kasey Kahne to celebrate his 41st birthday with his 25th career victory. Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards rounded out the top 5.

Matt Kenseth’s win in the Kobalt Tools 400 marked just the third time in series history a driver has celebrated a birthday with a trip to Victory Lane. Cale Yarborough did it once and Kyle Busch has done it once. Moving on from Vegas, Jimmie Johnson holds onto the points lead after his 6th place finish. He is 5 points ahead of Keselowski, who jumped past Dale Earnhardt for 2nd. Kenseth’s win moved him from 18th all the way up to 7th as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup continues!

Aloha fellow racers and car enthusiasts! It was a LONG wait for our March 30 & 31 event - 7 weeks! But it was well worth the wait because we made up for it with our first weekend “back to back” event. This year, once again we’ve invited Evolution Performance Driving School to hold a two day school on June 29 & 30 in Hilo - so mark your calenders! Evolution is a premier driving school that teaches it’s students how to be FASTER! This course definitely teaches you the “skills” needed to be a safe driver on our roads. I took the course three years ago, last year and I’m taking it again - it’s that good! If you want to improve your driving technique and acquire new skills - this is the coarse! Regardless of experience, this course builds upon existing skills, while introducing new ideas to improve one’s times. Students both ride & drive with Evolution trained national caliber drivers to learn where they are fast and where they need to improve. Small student teacher ratio of 6:1 insures quality instruction time. Combined with race proven skills, concepts and techniques, this course will improve the performance of all drivers on both road and track. The two days are divided into Phase One & Two. Students are given twenty four (24) runs per day! At our regular monthly races - we only get 4 runs (and maybe 2 - 4 “fun runs”) - so this school definitely gave LOTS of track time - with instructors on an individual basis. KARTING On Saturday, March 9th the Big Island Kart Club whipped around the Go Kart track at the Hilo Drag Strip facility with a nice turn out of racers young and not so young! Some newbies along with some new karts hit the track for the thrill of ride! You could not ask for a nicer day to go karting with the fam with the sun beaming down and a nice breeze to keep things cool. The Big Island Kart Club has an event each month throughout the year with the next race set for Saturday, April 13th. Club membership is $25/year and $15/class per race ($20 non-member). Karting’s Women...A Broad Appeal Hilo’s Kart Track at the Hilo Motorsports Complex was alive last Saturday with many more than the regulars. From the International Fashion Model, Erin Zajac, headed from her vacation on the Big Island to New York for her next photo shoot, to Kona resident and former Norwegian Kart racer, Grete Brandenborg, to Emily Potter exhilarated newbie, from HPA student Hallie Ann Jacobson to the most “Senior” woman enthusiast, Lin Stahmer...karting once again proved that a woman’s place is on the track! It was not lost on anyone that the women on the track were in their teens, 20’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Quite a broad age appeal for one of motorsports more thrilling and affordable form of racing. Tom Sluder, Hilo’s Track Steward who generously gives his time and effort to assure the Hilo Kart Track remains open, is a great proponent of Kart Racing. On any given weekend, you can find him not only ready for a good race himself but also setting up a kid’s size kart for those keiki who would like to give it a “Go”. South West Area Qualifier at
KAHUKU On March 16th & 17th the Hawaii Motorsports Association held the 2nd Annual Loretta Lynn Southwest Area Qualifier at Kahuku in Haleiwa on Oahu’s North Shore. Local racers from Hawaii, California and Arizona race the Area Qualifiers for a chance to advance to the Southwest Regional Championships at “The Ranch” at Anza, California on May 25th & 26th. A top finishing position there then earns the rider a spot in the “big show”, The Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee July 29th through August 4th. In 2012, there were more than 29,000 attempts to qualify in the select 36 classes for the 1,410 available start positions at the national final. The national event, dubbed “The World’s Greatest Motocross Vacation,” is held annually the first full week of August. As a testament to the significance of winning an AMA Amateur National Motocross title, most of today’s top motocross and supercross stars, including Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Kevin Windham and Ryan Villopoto, won championships at Loretta Lynn’s before graduating to the professional ranks.
