The Big Island Kart Club was enjoying karting in Paradise with an absolutely beautiful day at the Hilo Raceway on Saturday, June 15, 2013 with a nice lineup of racers showing up to take advantage of the great weather and to fill they’re need for speed with your okole riding an inch off the ground! The Big Island Kart Club also invites you down to give it a whirl and join in on the fun. Although I should warn you! Once you get bit by the karting bug, you may never be the same! Karting is probably the world’s most popular form of motorsport. It is practiced around the world by hundreds of thousands of racing enthusiast at widely differing levels of competition. For many, it’s simply a great way of enjoying competitive racing on a small and manageable budget or just hanging out at the track with friends. For others, it’s a serious stepping-stone into a career of racing. Most top auto racers including Stock Car and Formula 1 racers started their racing careers racing karts. The Big Island Kart Club has classes for adults and keiki and have racers from beginners to advanced racers and are always willing to help a fellow racer. Each year, on Fathers Day weekend, the Los Angeles Roadster Club put on one of the biggest roadster shows, swap meets and commercial vendor shows in Southern California. The famed L.A. Roadster Show! This year was the 49th time the L.A. Roadsters produced its worldrenowned show and the 34th year its been held at the Fairplex in Pomona, California. This year’s event was held on Saturday, June 15th and Sunday June 16th and brought some exciting new additions. The show had a new look and was located in the beautiful inner fairgrounds and in exhibitor building #4. The main attraction of course is the more than 800 roadsters, 1936 and older open cars of all types and makes, some original and others modified, but all of the highest quality. There were also more than 2000 Rods in Specialty Parking and a huge inside and outside manufactures area. In fact, it is the West Coast’s largest trade show; where over 200 manufacturers and vendors of reproduction hot rod parts and accessories display their products and services. The popular Cacklefest was back this year as they fired up the Top Fuel Dragsters twice on Saturday to the delight of the crowds. Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! It was another full day of racing at Kalae-loa Raceway Park on Oahu on Sunday, June 23. The day started off with Hu-laCross on the infield of the Dirt Oval Track with lots of non-stop action and more than a few bumper ridin’, fender bendin’, bump and go action going on. Kalaeloa Raceway Park’s photographer Nick Latulip gives us a photo look at the day’s action-packed event. HulaCross is a motorsport series that was born out of a need for racing without a real racetrack. It first started in the form of rally cross that is common across the US and made up of a mixture of sedans and trucks. Since the re-birth of Stock Car racing at Kalaeloa the HulaCross series has evolved a bit and the track now utilizes the dirt oval pit entrance/exit area and the infield to create a sort of arena style off road racing.

There were many who at first glance thought Greg Green’s ChopSmitty custom was some sort of kids bike, a mini chopper, a really cool mini chopper maybe, but still not the real deal when they recognized the Briggs and Stratton engine. But upon closer inspection realize that this was not just some mini bike with nice paint and a fatty back tire! Greg built the bike for his wife Jennifer and calls it SheWinns, a play off the Schwinn bicycles many of us grew up with. And win she does. When Greg & Jen planned to relocated to Waimea on the Big Island from Michigan, they took the almost finished custom to Florida and won at a couple of real serious shows including a 3rd place at the Rat’s Hole and 1st place at the Chop-n-Block show at Daytona 2012. Besides being a bike builder, Greg’s a high-performance car guy with features in magazines like Car Craft, Hot Rod, and 5.0 Mustang. But the racing was getting very expensive playing at the level Greg was playing at so he started looking at custom motorcycles. And of course with his dare to be different attitude, and the engineering skills to back it up he built his 1st bike called Orange Julius, which was a stretched out Pro Street style chopper with billet wheels that Greg machined himself. A bit more on the norm as far as the style, with the exception of a 20-horse Briggs & Stratton Racing Engine and an

Auto-transmission secured with Green Architecture. Greg says, “In a world of $30k and $40k custom bikes, this was a real alternative for real budgets and it is actually hand built, and not a kit.” Jen tells us “and it gets 90 miles to the gallon and will easily get up to over 100 miles per hour!” Greg fabricated the swingarm frame for SheWinns with a unique leaf spring setup under the seat rather than the traditional mono shock or air ride that we find on many rides today. The rear houses a 330mm tire on a 17x12 Black Bike aluminum wheel that Greg delaced, powdered coated then relaced and trued, another first for him and also the first set of spoked wheels he’s used and they are perfect. The closer you look at SheWinns the more you start to appreciate all the hand built parts and the engineering that went into the build. Note the lack of the typical triple trees. Instead he fabricated a modernized springer front end and a handle bar neck more like you would find on maybe a Schwinn? Of course this neck was carved out of tool steel. Look closely at what you don’t see is really what you start to notice the more you look at the bike, custom milled bushings, hidden steering stop, reverse mounted brackets and hardware for a super clean look.

SheWinns Now at this point you maybe wondering where is the gas tank? The triangular shaped belly pan, that’s the gas tank. The frame rails and the front and rear bulkheads are the frame for the tank so it’s also very strong. Slick. And what about that Briggs & Stratton engine? Isn’t that a lawnmower engine? Actually, it’s a far cry from your old lawnmower power plant. It’s an aluminum air-cooled Vanguard-series high-performance V-twin displacing about a 100cc’s more than an 883 Sportster. What? Yup! Stock, it pushes out 35hp as is and that’s not too far off a dead stock 883. Greg of course has done some performance work including a Stromberg carb that goes with the hot rod old school look and a set of open stainless headers. Now she’s putting out about the same power as the sportster but with this custom weighing in much less than a sportster, you get plenty of get up and go. Enough to even light up that giant 330 rear tire! Greg fabricated all the engine covers once again with simplicity in mind. The V-twin comes from the factory with an open belt primary and the torque converter clutch that engages with RPM. Greg fabricated a cross-frame jackshaft setup to convert the left-side belt drive to the chain right-side drive. The autotransmission and torque converter also cleans up the rest of the bike with the lack of a shift or a clutch lever on the swept back bars. The grips and foot controls are K-Tech units from Italy. The slick grips and throttle are made up of 12 pieces and probably why they cost more than most everything else on the bike. Duane Ballard stitched up that sweet seat while Greg applied his body and paint talents with the classy white finish. Dave Marfia gets the credit for the pinstiping. The paint scheme is simple, but stunning! The build has been 5 years and Greg continues to add to the ride including the new way cool headlamp that represents over 200 hours of design and machining. Its LED powered and made of polished bronze, brass, stainless steel and copper and is designed to resemble an antique camera or film projector. Greg is now an engineer and fabricator for Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and is not sure if he’ll be building any customer bikes anytime soon but will have both of these show-winning bikes in the Auto Value Car Show at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo in mid July. Be sure to go get yourself an eye full!

Kahului, HI – Brienna Gomes recently placed 2nd overall out of 17 women at the Southwest Regional Championship held in Anza, CA. She is the first ever female from Maui to make it to the Red Bull AMA National Amateur Motocross Championship held once a year at Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Brienna will be competing in the women’s class and needs the funds to get there. Over 20,000 racers from all over the world attempt to qualify in 33 classes for the 1,400 available spots at this prestigious National Championship race. There are 52 Area Qualifiers and 12 Regional Championships. Only the top 5 from each class from each regional race move on to this National Championship, to be held in July/August. Hailed as the world’s biggest and most esteemed amateur motocross race, Loretta’s has been the launching pad for many of today’s professional racers, including the legendary Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey. Highlights of this race will be televised on NBC on August 3rd at 3pm, Eastern time as “Red Bull Signature Series”. Due to financial constraints, Brienna traveled alone to California, flying out the very next day after graduating from H.P. Baldwin High School on May 17th. A race of this magnitude will take support from all of us, including dad who serves as her mechanic. On Sunday, June 23, 2013 Kalaeloa Raceway Park on Oahu held its monthly Stock Car races at the new dirt oval at KRP. Its so exciting to see both the field of racers, (in every class) and the spectators looking for the kind of excitement only stock cars racing can provide has been growing with each race now that stock car racing is finally back on Oahu! Winged Sprints, Econos, Modifieds, Super Streets, Mini Mods, Mini Stocks, Mini Trucks, & Cruzer Bruzers were all out kickin’ up dirt, and as the field of competitors continues to grow so does the level of competition. Lots of new racers are getting in on the action and a lot of the old racers (as in former Hawaii Raceway Park racers) are dusting off and updating their cars and once again are racing for the hardware! Cruzzin With The Lugnut www.vegas-rides.com It was a Cruise-In to Hackers Hot Rods & Customs in Henderson, Nevada On Saturday, June 1st with the Grand Re-opening of Jeff and Bud Hacker’s brand spankin’ new shop. Jeff and his son Bud build some pretty sweet hot rods and customs, and they celebrated their new shop with a great event that drew even more sweet rides to the new facility. There were muscle cars and classics, Camaros and Mustangs, trucks and Corvettes. Many rides that Hacker’s had built were also on hand as a great testament to their fine work including O’s ’70 Chevelle, Randy’s ’55 Chevy Shoe Box, Jesse’s ’71 El Camino, George’s incredible ’69 Firebird Convertible and Alan’s 1972 Datsun Z car with a Hacker transplanted LS2. And that was just some of the rides outside. In the new shop were some current builds including several ground up restorations like a 1934 Buick, something that Jeff and Bud specialize in. A 1969 blown Road Runner was a big hit as was a 1969 Z28 with an LS transplant. The family gave everyone a tour of the shop and also fired up the grill. IT’S NOT A FAD, IT’S A LIFESTYLE… Team Foreign Objects (TFO) held its annual event at the Podium Raceway in Kalaeloa, Oahu on May 25, 2013. This event brought out ALL Euro enthusiasts – 73 Euro vehicles – 40 Volkswagens, 15 BMWs, 10 Audis, 7 Air-cooled VWs, and 1 Porsche. This 6th annual event was even bigger and better than last year’s. About TFO: TFO started in February 2003 on Oahu, Hawaii by two men who just did a simple front end swap then decided to embark on something ‘good’ – a Euro team / a European car club. The forefathers of Shane and ‘Gonzo’ Ryan brought in a few enthusiasts who shared the same passion of the Euro scene. Pres. Gonzo and Vice Pres. Dino now leads an elite 24 members spanning to Maui, Texas, Oklahoma, Northern California, Washington, Nevada, and most recently S. Korea. There are no standards to be a member of TFO, just attend three meetings. TFO is a family oriented club and understands that family, school and careers are priority to its members. Like a typical family TFO members are there for each other in time of need. Whenever TFO holds an event it brings positive attention to the car scene, especially the Euro scene. TFO donates generously to the Hawaii Food Bank, US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots, beach clean-ups, and other notable community events. And, can’t forget its regular BBQs which is open to anyone how wishes to join them. The 6th Annual TFO event was a totally non-stop action event. From roll-in early in the morning to late afternoon multiple events were occurring. From the electric go-cart racing inside the Podium Raceway to the remote control drifters outside to the home-made Big Wheel cruising the parking lot to the beautiful models taking pictures next to the cars, everywhere you turn something is happening. Wild Wes on the MIC entertained the massive crowd, controlled the tempo, and gave away numerous valuable door and raffle prizes. Besides the trophy awards for each class winner the crowd favorite was the Car Limbo Contest. Guys and gal were stuffed in trunks and every little space a body could fit into to get their Euro as low as possible and under the limbo bar. Believe it or not Dan Soulliard’s Scirocco limbo’d a $128,000 2013 paper plate Audi convertible R8 Spyder. This TFO event would not have been a success for without its sponsors – Island Air, Premier, Shea’s Luxury Detailing, Gatorz Eyewear, BMW of Honolulu, ECS Tuning, Poly Love Clothing, Audi of Hawaii, Honolulu Volkswagen, SantiaGOphotography, Electrical Innovations, Performance LEDs, The Cubcake Engineer, TalagananCrazy, Eastside Graphics, Jamba Juice, BSH, Function clothing, and Freelance Clothing. #EASTENDHOTRODS #KAHALAMALL Kahala Mall and the East End Hot Rods hosted the Kahala Mall’s 5th Annual Cruise Night “Classic Car Show” at the popular Oahu shopping center on Saturday night, June 8, 2013. It’s the biggest Cruise Night we’ve seen this year and the crew from Kahala Mall and East End Hot Rods did a super job of organizing the event. Hundreds of cool cars, trucks and motorcycles filled the rooftop parking above Longs giving attendee’s lots to see. An antique fire truck that was turned into a shuttle bus, kinda like the old Sampan buses was a fun way to get around for the day. Attendees could get a ticket to ride the fire truck with a real Honolulu Firefighter for a $5 donation or a donation of 5 pounds of food for the Hawaii Food Bank. Local comedian Augie T was on hand and on the microphone and that’s always a good time when Augie T in in the house! Inside Kahala Mall there was also Fathers Day card making for the keiki and that too was a big hit. A big Mahalo to Whole Foods for their participation and to all the car owners who each brought either a monetary donation of canned food donation for the Hawaii Food Bank. What a great event for everyone. Mahalo also to Korey Higa, who is home from college for the summer for providing Motorhead with all the great photos. Aloha fellow racers and car enthusiasts! We hope you’re having a great summer - we know we are! June 16 was our 6th event of the 2013 RTP Championship Season. The Hilo weather blessed us once again with perfect conditions! We had a turnout of nineteen drivers. Two new drivers joined the ranks - Cathy Kadooka in her new 2013 Mazda 3 and Case Vanderhout in his 2002 BMW 330 Ci. Cathy was finally able to put her vehicle through it’s paces. What a great way to find out what your ride can and cannot do, in a controlled, safe and fun environment. If you make mistakes here the only thing that get’s “bruised” is your ego. Oh ya - there’s also that poor orange traffic cone that shows the “battle scars” from drivers pushing their cars just a little too hard. But as I explained to Cathy, imagine a person unexpectedly steps right in front of your vehicle (sound familiar?) Instead of frantically stomping on your brakes, loosing control and possibly hitting the pedestrian, you can deftly steer around that individual (or orange traffic cone.) You learn to be “one” with your car, knowing it’s strengths and weaknesses - as well as yours, the driver. Case had heard about us “cone chasers” and was “interested,” but rumor has it what finally got him out to the track was a friend’s dare as to who was the faster driver. That friend, Felipe Martin (1989 BMW 325i) who was at our last month’s event had to do the “walk of shame” as Case, a first timer, with a heavier Bimmer (newer & faster?) was able to post the better raw & handicap time. Don’t worry Felipe, we’ve ALL been there! What’s even more humiliating is being beaten in one’s own vehicle - there’s just something wrong about that! I know - I’ve been there! Brandon Wilk was once again the autocross “poster child,” taking FTD (Fastest Time of Day - 75.600) and top RTP (Racer’s Theoretical Per- formance) adjusted time - 63.352 - which earned him another 10,000 RTP points. Allen Stueben in his 2005 Lotus Elise again placed a close 2nd with a raw time of 77.057 - and a RTP time of 66.192 - enough to keep his second place position. For raw time: 3rd- Rick Bowers- 78.091 4th- Michael Oates- 80.696 5th- F, Brian Dorr- 81.912 & 6th- Vernon Harvey- 82.360 Now for adjusted RTP “shuffle”: 3rd- Michael Oates- 66.897 4th- Vernon Harvey- 67.894 5th- Brittni Watanabe- 67.950 & 6th- F. I drove his 1999 VW Jetta TDi and I have new found respect for Brandon. His Jetta has LOTS of torque - and lots of torque steer - and it’s heavy - and it beat me up. I had bruises the next day to prove it. It definitely ISN’T a Miata. and that’s what even more amazing is what Brandon can do with this car while driving. He makes it “dance.” And that is what they say makes a “great” driver! And that’s why he’s accumulated 60,000 out of 60,000 possible points! So come out and see for yourself! SO-CAL Speedshop
Each year on the Friday before the Great LA Roadster Show, So-Cal Speed Shop in Pomona California has its Annual Open House. This year So-Cal also celebrates Sixty-Seven Years of Speed & Power with the open house event falling on Friday, June 14, 2013 and what a day is was. Many great rides So-Cal has built for their selves and for customers over the years were there to share So-Cal’s rich history of building some of the worlds finest traditional hot rods, racecars, customs and mid-sixties supercars. A sweet ‘32 Highboy from The Justice Private Automotive Collection was on display as was the famous Wilton & Doss T/F Dragster that was making some serious noise while Pete and Ed Justice were on hand doing Rod & Custom Radio. In the speed shop you got to see where the magic happens with a handful of cars being built including Billy Gibbons 1934 Ford in bare metal. All the Hot and Cool So-Cal Speed Shop Gear for summer were available including t-shirts, hats and those way cool Vintage Retro Coolers. Every rodder should have one of those for the road. If you worked up an appetite taking in everything the open house had to offer, they had you covered with food trucks that lined the street. What an event. Congratulations So-Cal Speed Shop on sixty seven years of shaping a culture! So if you’re gonna be in Pomona for the LA Roadster Show, do yourself a favor and be there a day earlier and check out the coolest open house in town.

Race Day, Saturday, June 8th the 808 MX/ATV Association ran its monthly points race at their motocross facility at the Hilo Raceway. Perfect weather and a great turn out of riders made for an exciting day of racing. 808 MX/ATV sends a BIG Mahalo out to their new sponsor, Monster Energy and Anheuser-Busch for they’re support and of course the awesome track crew for all your hard work. Without you the races wouldn’t be possible. “And especially a big mahalo to all the racers for coming out. It’s always a blast seeing a full gate of keiki ready to battle it out!” The next race is set for Saturday, July 20, 2013. The West Coast-based Pacific Street Car Association headed east this summer with the MagnaFuel Rocky Mountain Summer Series with “Heads Up Racing” Rocky Mountain Style at the legendary Bandimere Speedway near Denver. The first of three summer series events was held at Bandimere on June 1st & 2nd as Bandimere drag strip celebrates its 55th Anniversary. If you missed this first race, not to worry, the second event will also take place at Bandimere on August 16-17, and the third event, just announced will be at Albuquerque Dragway on September 27-28. The three-race summer series features the PSCA’s Outlaw 10.5, Xtreme Drag Radial/True Ten Five and Outlaw 8.5 classes. At Bandimere it was Mark Everhart of Aurora, Colorado winning the Paint by Krusty Outlaw 8.5 over Derek Cooper of Thornton, Colorado. In the AOS Hot Street presented by Santa Fe Sand & Gravel, it was Rod Dewild of Henderson Colorado over Jason Kenzevich of Las Vegas and in the MagnaFuel XDR/TT5 Presented by OverKill Race Cars LLC, Mike Keenan of Albuquerque taking out Reunion Colorado’s Rick Holtz in the finals. And finally in the MagnaFuel 10.5 we saw Dave Walters in his Chevelle grabbed the win beating Jeff Andre in his Camaro to the stripe.
