s ’ r o t i Ed note 9 years and counting! Happy Anniversary Hawaii Motorhead Magazine! In May of 2004 a long time dream of publishing my own motorsports magazine came to life with a 16 page black & white (well there was what the printers called red spot color on the cover for our Motorhead logo) and we didn’t have a website. In 2012 we launched our new website and expanded our coverage from just the Big Island to covering everything motorsports throughout Hawaii and the 9th Hawaiian Island, aka Las Vegas! In 2012 we had over One Million web hits at www.HawaiiMotorhead. com and continue to grow each month. Mahalo nui to all of you our readers and to all of our advertisers for your support throughout the years. We couldn’t do it without you. We truly value your business and your friendship. And big things are a brewing at Motorhead! You can now read us on your smart phone or tablet without an App and we have lots of events on the way including our next big event, Motorhead’s HOT RODS & HANDLEBARS Memorial Day Weekend Car/Bike Show & Drags. And as we grow we are looking for good people to join our sales team with positions available on the Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Kauai & Las Vegas. If you are interested in a rewarding career in sales & marketing of our magazine publication, web sales and event sales and promotions, send your resume to nelson@teammotorhead. com Till then enjoy the ride! On Saturday, March 30th the Friends of Opiopio held a cancer benefit for Kaleo & Wendy Opiopio of Kona, a husband and wife both battling cancer. To see the outpouring of love and aloha from family, friends and businesses from around the island who came together to make the event the great success that it was, was truly amazing. The event filled the large parking area at Big Island Honda Kona with a car show with rides from all over the island. Classic cars, hot rods and trucks! Motorcycles, Imports and VW’s! Racecars, rat rods and even big rigs! It was impressive. Then there was the live entertainment, food booths, lucky number drawings galore, a jumping castle for the keiki and a silent auction that was filled with great items all donated from local businesses. Beautiful jewelry, canoe paddles, art, Fair Wind Cruises, an Optima battery, gift certificates from every thing from restaurants to Jamba Juice, a BBQ gas grill, tools, koa pieces and lots more. Then their family and friends surprised them with a custom VW

Dune Buggy all tricked out with Porsche wheels, performance engine with dual Weber carbs, roll cage and custom paint! Friends and family donated every thing and the boys built it from the ground up in like a few weeks and presented it to them at the show and there was not a dry eye to be found. Kaleo took Wendy for a ride and when they got back, Kaleo’s brother-in-law Emaile gave him his street bike that Emaile had completely redone. And even though the event is over, the battle continues for the Opiopio ‘ohana. And you can still help with a donation. Call Jeremy at 937-5051 or Willi at 756-1570. You can also find them on Facebook @ FriendsOfOpiopio. Mahalo to everyone who support, your donations and your prayers!

This is one fish we’re glad April & Denny Duquette of Island Performance & Off Road Kona reeled in. It was November of last year, we started the story about a “True Barn Find” and the restified build that followed. In this 4 part series we followed along as April turned this dusty barn find into the prize catch you see here. After stripping it down and evaluating all the parts and pieces, what needed to be replaced and what could be refinished, April dropped the Cuda off at D&L Painting for body and paint. The rear quarters were dented up pretty bad from sitting in the barn for so many years, so Jessie Araki and his crew at D&L Painting replaced the battered pieces with new panels and fenders. Jessie sprayed the two-tone blue and silver paint while Denny’s brother Darren sprayed the realistic fire inside the Mopar hockey stick strip. While the project was at the paint shop Denny was busy rebuilding the original 440 with new pistons, bearings, rods and a Mopar 306 solid roller cam with gear drive. The 915 heads now sport Crane roller rockers and the long block is topped with a dual quad manifold and dual 500 CFM Edelbrock carbs. A Mallory ignition provides the Mopar muscle with plenty of fire to burn all that fuel, and 2” primary ceramicoat headers and custom exhaust help the big horsepower fish breath. When April fires it up there’s no hiding the fact something wild is going under the hood! The 4 speed trans has a Zoom clutch, Passon Performance Slick Shift syncros and the original Hurst Pistol Grip shifter. When the paint was done the assembly started and April hung the Dana 60 rear end that’s been shortened 3” to accommodate the wide custom Foose wheels and also is stuffed with Dutchman axels, 4:10 ring & pinion and a Sure Grip posi. April installed SSBC disc brakes at all fours. All the trim and chrome has been redone or replaced (and what seemed like a million of those little clips) and the original seats, panels and dash were cleaned up. The interior is mostly stock with the exception of the roll bars with custom bent side bar for easy access to the driver’s seat, the custom steering wheel, stereo system and Autometer gauges. The smile on April’s face says it all! The late nights and weekends spent working on Project Cuda was well worth it. Beautiful paint, the perfect stance and over the top streetcar performance. This fish is “well done.”

MOPARS at the STRIP
Craig Tanaka • Photographer
Mopars at The Strip is an annual All-Chrysler/Mopar drag race, car show, swap meet, autocross and manufacturers midway at “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And all though MATS is an “All-Chrysler/Mopar” event, you will see all kinds of Muscle Cars competing for tens of thousands of dollars in prize money offered up. Race classes like MOPARS vs. the World is open to all makes and models but have a $500 Bounty if the overall winner is a MOPAR! And of course there is the “Indy Cylinder Head Quick 16” that’s open to the quickest 16 entries with a Chrysler/Mopar engine! The $5000 winner this year was Judy Radford in her Pro Mod-style Dodge Dakota pickup. Another wahine took top honors at MATS this year with Linzi Theobald Meserve in her Cuda over runner up Dave Walls in the finals. At MATS many come to see the drags but Mopars at the Strip is a whole lot more. This year Hotchkis Sport Suspensions returned to host the autocross event for those who like the thrills and challenges of all those turns and with the growth of the Pro Touring scene the Muscle Car Autocross Challenge has grown in popularity and gives the enthusiasts a chance to compete on a timed short course without leaving the car show parking lot. Participants and spectators compete for trophies, prizes, bragging rights and glory!

Craig Tanaka • Photographer used cars with his brother Len. In 1956 noticing interest in stick shift and performance type cars, they focused on purchasing these types of cars for re-sale. In 1968, Norm teamed up with Gary Dyer and began match racing with a factory altered wheel based Supercharged Hemi Dodge Coronet that changed the course of racing forever by laying the groundwork for what became the professional Funny Car Category. This is only the begining of the story. Read the full Mr. Norm biography at www.matslv.com Amazing! Then there’s the car show. The judged show classes include Stock, Restified/Clone, Modified, Pro Street & Race Car. There is also an award for the “Worlds Ultimate Mopar” for stock and Modified. The GEN X is for 21–year-old and younger hobbiest and includes judged classes for stock and modified. And to be sure no one is left out there are the Fun Field who just want to show off their vehicle and an Open Fun Field for the invited GM and Ford Friends. I like the Platinum display area where previous 1st place winners are on display. Another great thing they do at MATS. One of the Sox & Martin ’68 Hemi Cuda’s was there as well and it was for sale. This factory Hemi racecar was one of only 50 produced and is fully documented from its original owner till today. A rare chance to own a special piece of Chrysler and Drag Racing history. The Valley Isle Timing Association held its April Points Race at Maui Raceway Park on Saturday, April 20th with the Summit Pro & Sportsman Series, Jr. Dragster race and a special Street Car Trophy Dash. In the finals of the Summit “Super Pro” it was Scott Hi-rata in his Vega with a holeshot over Jon Shirota in his dragster to take the win. Scott ran a 9.73 on his 9.74 dial in to Jon’s 7.96 on his 7.97 dial in, but it was Scott’s faster reaction time that gave him the win. In the Summit Pro class Whitey Wojcheski in his VW Ghia red lit and gave the win to Mathew Simons in his Mustang while in the finals of the Summit Sportsman it came down to 2 Corvettes with John Evans first to the stripe besting Thomas Cunningham with a quicker ET for the win. The Summit Pro Bike gave everyone a classic Suzuki vs. Harley contest with Kurt Furumoto on the Suzuki taking the win as Kenneth Harmon on the Harley broke out of bracket running quicker than his dial in. In the April Event Special “Street Car Trophy Dash” Toby Orikasa in his Toyota Tacoma edged out Nicolas Garcia in his Honda Civic for the trophy and the bragging rights that go along with the win. In the Jr. Dragster 8.90 class, Makana Yamashita gave the win to Kayla Yamashita as Makana left early and turned on the red light. But at least the win stayed in the ‘ohana! Next race is set for the Memorial Day Weekend with the 17th Annual George “Flintstone” Andrade Memorial Drags. 2 days of Drag racing plus a tribute to George Classic Car Parade. A
s bike builder Roger Kuwahara of Kustom Fab Choppers, Honolulu once said, “How does a bunch of beach going, wave catching, pineapple eaters, come up with calling their project build “El Toro?” Well it started with the guy they built the bike for, “Da Bull” aka Mel who runs the parts side as a partner of KF Choppers. El Toro has won its fair share of awards and has graced the pages of a good handful of magazines since being completed, and in November of last year, local boy Timmy Travaso of Flight Crew Motorcycle Repair at Hickam Air Force Base purchased the one off ride. Timmy made a few adjustments to make the bike rideable for him and has put about 1000 miles on it since.
jokes tells us “yup just like having a bomb between my legs! Fuel pump, coil and wiring all right there. Hahaha!” I like the slick custom mono spring seat that gives Timmy a bit of an okole cushion on the ridged ride. The rear fender is molded into the frame just a few hairs above the 240 rear tire. The wheels are custom billet units Mel the parts guy had custom made. Richard Carvalho of Aiea (last months cover VW) gets the credits for the sweet paint and graphics. Motorvation comes via a polished 115 cube RevTech with left hand RevTech open belt drive. Love the custom dual carb stacks that fit the theme well. The 5-speed transmission is setup with an automatic shift clutch (note the lack of a clutch lever on the bars too) and a sproter setup in the rear.
The build started with a Paul Yaffe custom frame that Roger, Mel & Darren at KF Choppers fit with a 36 over springer front end and Paul Yaffe handlebars. Note the lack of any top controls on the bars thanks to a side by side double master brake cylinder set up that activate the front and rear brakes with a single foot control.
Timmy is always busy building something new in his spare time at his family owned and operated repair shop. Look for his latest project, a blown S10 pickup in an upcoming issue of Motorhead. Like El Toro, it’ll definitely grab your attention!
There’s also a lack of any wires and cables, which are all hidden, many in the center section of the KF Choppers stretched out tank. Timmy who’s always crackin’

Hawaií Hawaii Motorhead Magazine’s BUG IN 2013 at the Hilo Drag Strip presented by the Big Island VW Car Club, Bears Racing and the Big Island Auto Club on April 20th & 21st was big fun for all. After off and on rain all day Friday, we all got up Saturday morning to a picture perfect day with blue skies and a nice breeze which made for great track conditions for the 4th annual BUG IN. With an early start both the VW’s and the non-VW racers and Jr. Dragsters got lots of runs in and the VW’s got all their qualifying for the Quick 8 and Brackets. The BIAC Bracket racing ran quick as well. Very quick for Saturdays Mega Bracket winner Shon Olivera of Honokaa who ran a 8.63 sec/147 mph pass in his Firebird in the finals over David Francis break out time of 9.00 sec/152 mph.
The show must go on! And a little bit of rain in the morning was not keeping anyone from showing off they’re pride and joys. The All VW car show had all kine VWs from all over the Big Island and a nice handful from Oahu. Here are the winners. Special Interest – Paul Soultz of Hilo, 1975 Brazilia Race Car – Reno Lau of Kona, 1956 Type1 Bug Buggy – Delbert Crivello of Keaukaha, 1955 Buggy Ghia – Darryl Yamashita of Hilo, 1967 Ghia Type3 – Leimana Lau of Kona, 1962 Notch Back

Many of the street and show VW’s did an early morning cruise and photo shoot with R.K. Smith of Hot VW magazine then did a beach cruise before pulling into BUG IN where they filled up the grassy field designated for Sun-
days car show. Now Sunday was a different story as it rained in the early morning and a few passing showers kept the track wet so it wasn’t until after lunch that we could go racing. But the weather did hold up and we were able to finish the entire racing program.

Viva Las Vegas Car Show
The is the best of its kind anywhere featuring 800-1,000 vintage cars, which must be period correct, and pre 1963. There are rows of vendors with the coolest stuff, a huge stage with what seems like an endless amount of 50’s bands. There is nothing like Viva Las Vegas! The Tiki Pool party on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday has become one of the major events at VLV. It’s a great opportunity for girls (and guys) to show off their vintage swimwear. Another major event is the Viva Las Vegas Burlesque Showcase that brings 90 minutes of entertainment reminiscent of burlesque’s golden age. Featuring world-renowned burlesque stars, comedians, and musicians. Past shows have featured such stars as LouLou D’Vil, Roxi D’lite, Michelle L’amour, Kitten De Ville, Kalani KoKonuts, Catherine D’Lish, and Angie Pontani, just to name a few. Other events include Jiving Classes and Jiving Competition, Burlesque Bingo, Guitar Geek Festival, VLV Vintage Fashion Show, Pin up girl workshops by Mitzi’s & Co’s Pin Up Beauty Academy, and Charles Phoenix Slideshow. If you want to attend I suggest you get a move on for next year, as this event is a sell out every year! As I said before, there is nothing like Viva Las Vegas!

The Maui Motocross Association (MMA) held its April dirt bike race on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Maui Motorsports Park in Pu’unene with fantastic weather (that’s why they call it paradise) and many riders on social media were saying, “the track was sick” and “the racing was action!” Anticipation and excitement was high for the first race of the 2013 season after the All Island Invitational Craig Lew Memorial Race on Presidents Day weekend in February. Unlike years past where the adults and kids would race on separate weekends, this year schedule of races will have the adults and the kids racing on the same day with races scheduled for every other month. The track(s) are open every Wednesday from 2 -6pm and just about every weekend, Saturday and Sunday 10-5 for practice. The MMA website has got a facelift for 2013 too. Check it out for track schedule and more info on MMA! Join. Ride. Race! Photos and results submitted by Sue Bell

BLEIZN
for the kids
On Saturday, April 20th Bleizn FX hosted a special Classic Car Show with the Kanehili Hawaiian Homestead Cruz in Kapolei to raise funds for sports equipment at the community recreation center for area keiki. The show was open to pre 1970 classics and hot rods and they filled Kinoiki Street behind the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands office with these beautiful rides. There were food booths, and live music provided by Kanekili Homegrown Artist. There were even a handful of lowrider bicycles on display and local style plate lunch and local crafters too. It’s so great to see the community come together and kokua for the keiki. Everyone loves seeing the classic cars and hot rods, and when they come together as they often do to help our friends, family and community, its even more special! Mahalo plenty to Lei and her ‘ohana from Bleizn FX and to all the classic car and hot rod owners that supported this great event. The NHRA Mello Yello drag racing series rolled into Las Vegas April 4th – 7th with the SummitRacing.com Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Antron Brown, Johnny Gray and Mike Edwards favored by odds maker’s and sports books for the win in their respective classes. Don Schumacher Racing’s Top Fuel driver & defending champion Antron Brown was favored 2/1 and qualified at the front of the class in his Matco Tools dragster on Friday with a stout 3.780 at 320.43 to give him his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 33rd of his career. But in the finals on Sunday it was teammate Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher who claimed his second win of the season and 71st of his career in Top Fuel as he drove to his seventh win at LVMS with a 3.851 at 323.27 in his U.S. Army dragster, finishing just in front of runner-up Antron Brown who ran a 3.956 at 299.60. In Funny Car another DSR entry was favored 2/1 with Johnny Gray who qualified No. 4 at the end of qualifying with a 4.096 at 309.42. But John Force Racing’s Robert Hight qualified No. 1 with a nice 4.053 at 315.19 to claim the top spot going into Sunday’s eliminations. Gray lost to No. 14 qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the quarterfinals and Cruz went on to beat Courtney Force in the finals for his first win of the season, and his 31st career win. Pedregon’s Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry finished with a 4.173 at 298.40, while Force’s Traxxas Ford Mustang smoked the tires near mid-track and trailed with a 5.244 at 175.59. In Pro Stock, Fred Crespi, odds maker for the race and sports book at the Aliante Hotel & Casino tabbed Mike Edwards, who is still winless in 2013 as a 6/5 favorite. Things were looking good for Edwards when he qualified No. 1 in his Chevy Camaro with a 6.642 at 208.26, but he came up short to Erica Enders-

Stevens in the Semifinals. Allen Johnson, who is strong at LVMS and the events defending champion was posted at 5/2 but at the end of the day, won the event for the second straight year and claimed more than $100,000 during the weekend! Johnson, who won the $50,000 K&N Horsepower Challenge all-star event on Saturday, pocketed $25,000 for winning Sunday’s race and the $25,000 NHRA Sweep Bonus for winning both events. Johnson is the seventh Pro Stock driver to sweep both events in the 29-year history of the K&N Horsepower Challenge. This also marked Johnson’s second consecutive win of the season with a final round performance of 6.713 seconds at 206.76 mph in his Mopar’s Express Lane Fast Oil Changes Dodge Avenger. Erica Enders-Stevens had problems early in the finals and shut her GK Motorsports Chevy Camaro off at mid-track. Allen Johnson’s win at LVMS moved him into the points lead for the first time this season, jumping ahead of the event’s No. 1 qualifier, Mike Edwards, by four points.

Aloha fellow racers and car enthusiasts! Seven weeks! That’s how long our members had to wait for March 30 & 31, our first weekend “back to back” event. On Saturday, March 30 the anticipation was in the air as drivers jumped into the 2nd event of our season. The morning had excellent conditions, but that disappeared as clouds built up and heavy downpours became the norm during the afternoon sessions. Ya, I know - rain in Hilo?? Surprise, surprise! And if you were lucky enough to be running “slicks,” life definitely became interesting. If you’re not going to have a chance at best time, you might as well have some fun. And that’s what it’s all about! I beat my major competitor, Rick Bowers, by more than 2 seconds (yeah!) but we were both “smoked” (almost 10 seconds - !!!) by Jonathan Bartsch, a 1st timer friend of Rick’s, who was driving Rick’s Miata!!! Of course, Jonathan ran in the dry morning heat. Humility none the less! I placed 15th - Ouch!!!! Brandon Wilk dominated the day with an untouchable RTP time of 54.269, followed by Michael Oates (58.484,) Allen Stueben (58.585,) Roy Whitney (58.613,) James Hains (59.653) and Vernon Harvey (60.017.) March 31, Sunday, was absolutely beautiful - perfect weather - all day! Brandon Wilk once again showed everybody how it was done. He took fastest time of day, both raw & RTP time - 53.868 - followed by Michael Oates (57.390,) Roy Whitney (58.219,) Hawke Walleman (58.269,) Rick Bowers (58.744) and me (58.781.) Some close times! And then, 2 weeks later, our 4th event on Sunday, April 14 took place. Once again, perfect conditions set the backdrop for some fierce competition. And once again, Brandon Wilk became the driver to beat with both fastest raw (75.080) and RTP (62.917) times. I pulled 2nd fastest raw time (77.678) but ended up in 8th place with the RTP modifier. Second place was once again held by Michael Oates (66.840) - followed by Roy Whitney (66.999,) Ed McMurray (66.225,) David Smith (67.660) and Vernon Harvey (67.773.) So how does Brandon do it? Remember he’s driving a VW TDi. So far he’s accumulated 40,000 out of 40,000 possible points! Great driving??? Come out and see for yourself! Or better yet, sign up, drive and see how honed your skills are. Remember, it’s driver skill as opposed to horsepower! So join us Sunday, May 19 for some sports car fun! Drivers (no experience necessary!) can sign up at motorsportreg.com. Spectators are always our guests! Check us out on Facebook and at bigislandscca.org. And remember, Evolution Performance Driving School will be here June 29 & 30! So sign up now! Go to evoschool.com for more information.“Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F.
