We’ve been fortunate enough to have three of Jason Sanborn’s rides in the pages of Hawaii Motorhead Magazine over the years. In fact all 3 made our “Best of Motorhead” issue back in February of 2012. The first of the 3 in ’06 with his Dodge 3500 with Kelderman Air Ride Suspension and massive rollers. Then in 2009 with his Phat 53, a 1953 F100 with Blown Big Block and Air Ride and in 2010 with his Hawaiian Sled, a 1949 Mercury also with a Tiki theme. See all three in our Best of Motorhead in our back issues, February 2012. Now Jason is back with another over the top ride, this time a 2 wheeled Hawaiian Tiki Ride. Jason bought the 2012 custom as an unfinished project, which is based on a unique War Eagle “Holy” soft tail frame. The up-tube is fabricated then CNC machined so the holes run parallel to the ground, the tubes are then fitted with CNC machined tubes. The swing-arm holes are also machined to angle them at 15 degrees. The Russell Iyo built 113 cube is built and stuffed with only the best including Hyperformance Jugs with Wiseco Pistons, R&R Machine Heads, S&S block with Carrillo Rods, Sputhe Roller Covers and Jim’s Tubes and Lifter Box. 44mm Weber carbs are mounted on custom intakes, one for each cylinder. And check out the right side motor mount that doubles as breathers with custom milled billet covers. The custom exhaust like the drives are opposite of the norm exiting out the left side. The trans is a Revera 6speed, right side drive with a Billet 4U Belt Drive and a Speedway Belt Drive Trans Brake that really keep things super clean at the rear wheel. And speaking of brakes, to keep things as clean as possible there is no front brake hand control on the Clip-On handlebars. Instead both front and rear brakes are controlled by the foot controls and a proportioning valve. The front end is a Mean Street “Stiletto” unit and Jason powder coated the centers of the Weld Magnum rims, 21x3 ½ up front and 18x10 ½ in the rear wrapped in a 300 Avon. Chris Calicdan of Twisted Bike Worx in Hilo assembled the bike and also put his own “Twist” on many features including the trick brake set up, hidden wiring and lines, ignition and custom battery mount. Daryl Nagasako sprayed the mirror finish while Greg Kobayashi did the Gold Leaf and pinstriping. Jason who owns and operates his own trucking business, Sanborn Trucking had some exciting news to share when we did the photo shoot at his home garage, Sanborn Speed Shop. He had just bought an auto collision and refinishing business in Hilo and has brought on well know body and paint guy Daryl Nagasako to handle that aspect of the business. They will do mostly collision repair and refinishing work, but you can bet we’ll see some badass custom rides roll out of Sanborn Collision Repair. Stay tuned for news on their Grand Opening in early 2013!

The 21st Annual Moon Eyes “Hot Rod Custom Show 2012” was held on Sunday, December 2nd at the Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, Japan with not only some of the coolest cars on the planet from all over Japan, but special guest and their cars from abroad including Dale Snoke’s and his 1964 Mercury Comet B/FX The ROCKET, that’s featured in the Moon Illustrated Magazine, volume 9. The original Schley Brother “Lighting Bug” also made the journey showing off the restored racer that made history with its first 10 second pass back on October 6, 1972. The MC world was also well represented in a new show feature called Early Days Chopper Extravaganza with 9 motorcycles and their owners/builders from abroad including such notables like Scott Jones of Noise Cycles in Santa Ana who took Best of Show Motorcycle and the Retro Cycles Pick with his Cherry’s Company 2012 H-D Knucklehead. Another new feature was the VW Air Cooled in Action segment with over 80 VW’s clustered together including the blue ’57 VW of Yoichi Irie of Shirley Mama Speed & Custom in Nagasaki, one of our Facebook friends and this months feature VW! And talk about a great international automotive event. Here’s an alpha list of the visiting countries. Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, United Kingdom and the USA! Live music with a nostalgic twist included The Black Tibetans, Jackie and the Cedrics, The El Caminos and the Minnesota Voodoomen! A neat tradition at the Moon Eyes Yokohama show is just before the official kick-start of the show at 9AM, the doors to the main entrance are opened for spectators who line the entryway while each of the guests from abroad physically ride in, down the center and make they’re way towards the front in parade fashion. And when everyone is at the front, each of the guests from abroad grabbed the microphone to say hello to the welcoming crowd! How cool is that! The Moon Eyes Hot Rod Custom Show is growing each year, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year. Photos by Yoichi Irie

Honoring Our Vets

Bliezn FX – Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade The Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade commemorating the anniversary of the invasion of Pearl Harbor each year on December 7th rolled through Waikiki, this year commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Arizona Memorial. In order to establish a memorial to honor those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated in 1962. It has been visited by countless people from all over the world during the past 50 years. The Arizona Memorial is one of the few wartime memorials in the United States where actual survivors volunteer. The Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade provides a meaningful tribute to our veterans and armed forces while featuring talented performing groups, associations, local, state and national dignitaries and organizations, along with military groups and officials joining together to share the Spirit of America with the citizens and visitors of Hawaii. The Ohana from Bleizn FX Cruise Nights did their part bringing together the classic cars and hot rods as they almost every weekend, this time to honor our servicemen. In 2005, Yoichi Irie of the world famous speed sho Shirley Mama Speed & Custom in Nagasaki Japa got a cover shot in Hot VW magazine with this on of-a-kind 1957 Oval Window uniquely named, B Tortoise! The ’57 was built to be a show piece fo his work which started with a custom suspension The front beam was shortened 5” and the rea 10. Looking to create something totally unique special tubular mounts were fabricated front and rear to mount the Canover air suspension units Back in ’03 the rear parcel shelf was left wide open to show off the trick suspension, detailed t wishbone trailing arms. Today its been sealed up tuck-n-roll upholstery to finish things off.

Up front the original shock towers were trimmed a trailing arms, CB Performance drop spindles, Jam Yoichi also rebuilt the transmission with a 4:10 ri gears, heavy-duty side cover, Super Diff and cus

Yoichi then built a 2074cc street monster with Type 1 case, CB 78.4mm forged stroker crank, connected to 94mm Cima/Mahle pistons and cylinders with stroker rods from Gene Berg. Topped with CB Street Eliminator heads and dual 48 Weber carbs, Yoichi’s ’57 is just as fast as it looks! When Yoichi decided he wanted to make a things on the bug for this years big Moon Eyes Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, he added the style panel graphic paint scheme and repla the street rod style interior with this old schoo spired tuck-n-roll interior.

Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! Happy New Year! By the time you read this, December’s event will already have taken place - and the results will be on our website, on our Facebook page and in Hawaii Motorhead’s February issue. But I will tell you about our November 25 event! Great weather, great day! Especially for Michael Oates who once again dominated the competition. But it wasn’t easy. Brandon Wilk was once again trying to shake Michael off the podium and end his winning streak. And in a Jetta diesel! Now that’s driving skill! And Allen Stueben, who had been driving a Toyota Celica GTS, finally got his Lotus Elise back from the repair shop. And he took 3rd place. So his worries of forgetting how to drive a rear wheel car were unfounded. Just ask the drivers who weren’t as fast. Fourth place was taken by Vernon Harvey in his S2000, an SCCA DC Region member, who has now made the Big Island his home. He narrowly beat Roy Whitney in his Mini Cooper S by a mere 3 hundredths of a second! And that’s after getting lost on the course a couple of times! And the wahines were well repre- sented by Margie Oates (of the Oates Miata Team) and Brittni Watanabe (Mazda 3) who placed 6th and 7th - only 15 hundredths of a second apart! And they put 11 other (slower!) male drivers in their place - including me! Ouch! The 11th and final race of the 2012 season will take place on December 23, 2012 and that will bring our season to a close. Looking back on 2012, I’d say it was a pretty good year. Our club has definitely gone through some changes. We have added a bunch of new faces to the driver’s ranks. We were able to purchase a “killer” timing system to replace our old one. We held an Evolution Performance Driving School (our second!) and plan on having another this year. We now use motorsportreg.com for registration. It makes life a whole lot easier. I’d highly recommend it to other clubs. But none of this would be possible without the commitment and dedication of the people behind the scenes who make it happen for everyone. Those “guys” who show up early, open the gates and set up the track (and break it down.) Roy Whitney, my Assistant RE, who manned the waiver booth and made sure things ran smoothly. Brandon Wilk, who consistently created challenging courses, month after month. Margie Oates, who tirelessly captained the registration desk, kept things organized, and put a smile on even the grumpiest early morning riser. Mark Pernell, who oversaw our safety, trained and mentored other steward trainees. Paul Zabel, whose contributions would take up way too much space - mahalo for guiding me through 2012. Luke McKay, who made “those laptops” work. And the list goes on.......... From our club to you - have a happy and safe 2013! Our 2013 schedule will be posted on our website and Facebook. Watch for the date of our Annual BBQ and Test & Tune! You’re invited! Come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com. We’ll be looking for you! Aloha! We’ll be looking for you! Aloha!“Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Brian Dorr, Regional Executive Big Island of Hawaii Region Sports Car Club of America

SLICK

World Champ! SLICK RACING WINS LUCAS OIL 2012 PRO ELIMINATOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP A buddy of mine, Slick from Slick Racing, a Douglas County based drag boat race team, who lived on the Big Island for a while, competed in the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series World Finals last weekend at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona, and clinched the 2012 Pro Eliminator Class World Championship. Paul “Slick” and Nancy Fontenot, owners of Slick Racing, with their boat, “I’m Back~Hot-n-Bothered” #669, a blown alcohol pickle fork hydro, that competes in the 8.000 second 1/4 mile Pro Eliminator class only needed a 1 round win at the World Finals to clinch the championship. With “Slick” at the wheel, the team accomplished their 2012 goal to take the season long championship. Slick Racing would like to thank its sponsors: Percival Construction – Stateline; Carson Valley Carquest – Gardnerville; Carson Valley Welding – Carson City; Carson Valley Transmission – Gardnerville; New Pioneer Plumbing – Minden; A Sign Shop – Gardnerville; Sun Shadow Window Tints - Aspen, CO, and its crew: Jim Burkett; Don Heldoorn; Frank Robinson; Jason Spohr; Bill Abbott; Jerry Keller; Sean Karow; Scott Knauf; Andree’ Pothier; and Misty Summers for all the support and hard work throughout the season. You can visit www.dragboats.com and www.lucasoildragboats.com to view pictures, schedules, results, TV coverage and more. Congratulations Slick and we look forward to following you in 2013!

KAUA’I

motocross

Cienna Barretto Photography

The Kauai Motocross Riders Association held its last race of the season on Sunday, November 25 at its track in Wailua. And unlike MX racing on the Big Island where the last race was pretty soggy, the KMRA track at Wailua was hot, dry and dusty. In the keiki 50cc it was Kaimana Kaui racing his way to the front of the pack in the 50cc “C” followed by Eddie Silliman finishing 2nd and Colt Jefferies in 3rd. In the 50cc “B” Pookela Silva finished at the front of the class with Talan Goias-Arzadon placing 2nd and Channyn Moke in 3rd. Cory Goias-Soares took the win in the 50cc “A” with Alexander Nelson finishing up in 2nd. Bryson Yoro doubled up with a 1st place finish in both the 250cc and 450 amateur as did the top 3 finishers in the 250 and 450 expert class with Brandon Carvalho, Puna Gallardo and Brian Mederios finishing 1, 2 and 3 in both classes! And as usual there was no catching Paul Medeiros who took the Quad class. For complete results and point standings for the 2012 season visit KMRA online at www.808kmra.com. You can also find more information about the Kauai Motocross Riders Association and their events.

While much of the mainland US is freezing their okole’s off, Sunny Southern California enjoyed temperatures in the upper 70’s for the Annual MOONEYES Xmas Party Show and Drag for 2012 at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday, December 8th. Many car enthusiasts say this one of the best winter shows anywhere and if not already on your bucket list, it should be! It’s now on mine. Tons of Hot Rods, Customs, Sleds and Choppers. Drag Races, a Cackle Fest and Live Bands that included Gambler’s Mark, Dead Beat Daddy, Hot Rod Trio and the Dynotones! Some of those names are enough to make me wanna go. There was also a Pinup Girl contest and Pinstriping and over 100 vendors including West Coast Kustoms, Ed Roth, Von Hot Rod, Dragfink.com,

Project

CUDA In November, we started a Motorhead Garage story called Project Cuda. A 1970 “Barn Find of April & Denny Duquette of Island Performance & Off Road in Kailua-Kona. After being striped down, the suspension and drive train was 1st on the long list of work and improvements to turn this dusty barn find into a prize catch. The tired fish would spend the month at D&L Painting in Kona where

January 2013 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 37 new panels were installed and lots of block sanding was in order to get the body ready for its two-tone paint. Last month we saw Jessie and his crew spray color on the door jams, engine compartment and trunk. This month we get a look at the exterior getting its two-tone blue and silver paint and the signature Plymouth Barracuda hockey stick stripe with an Island Performance twist, as Denny’s brother Darren airbrushed realistic fire inside the stripe. Next month it’s back to Island Performance to reassemble the soon to be fast fish with it’s potent power plant, Foose wheels and updated interior. Stay tuned!

Pearl City’s own Glenn Yahiku without a doubt owns a HOT VW – literally. His ‘HOT-VWS’ license plate attests to its hotness. Of all the VWs in Hawaii, Glenn was surprised that HOT-VWS vanity plate was not taken. What makes Glenn’s toy even more admirable is that Robert K. Smith, Feature Editor of Dune Buggies and Hot VWs Magazine completed a four-page spread for the February 2013 edition. Glenn has done Pearl City and Hawaii proud by sharing his VW passion. After graduating from Pearl City High School, Glenn attended reputable technical schools before landing his current position as one of the top welders at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Like some local boys, Glenn wanted to stay close to home so he attended Honolulu Community College studying Refrigeration. Glenn then decided to attend Hobart Institute of Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio in its 11 months welding program, and then returned home. Glenn has been welding the greatest fighting Navy’s ships for 10 years. In the 80s after tinkering with V8s, a Vega, Glenn made the smart choice and moved to the air cooled Volkswagens. Besides his street legal turbo 2276cc machine, Glenn has the famed Dean Jeffries Manta Ray Kyote II body in his garage. Only 150 of these type bodies were made, and Glenn has a ‘cherry’ one. Perhaps a later project. Glenn hopes to purchase a VW Bus, too, someday. So, Glenn’s stable, like Glenn Nomura of Ewa Beach, is slowly increasing as time and funds permit. Cruising and night cruises. Glenn is an active member of the VW Club of Hawaii and actively participates in most of its sanctioned events.

You can find Glenn and his wife, Marina, Friday nights at Lei Naumu and Bernard Cabral’s Bleizn FX cruise nights at the Pearl City Gateway Center. You would find Glenn and Marina cruising with fellow VW Club of Hawaii members Diovi Baptista, David Alipio, Edge Yuen, Troy Costales, Richard & Leilani Carvalho, Timmy and Raydon Travaso, and Henry Kaluna Kaha Sr. and Irene Ligsay-Vereze just to name a few of the regular Friday Night Cruisers. When not cruising the streets, you can find Glenn and Marina fishing in the deep blue off the Waianae Coast in their 19’ Hawaiian Hawk. When Glenn and Marina are out trolling, their 11-year-old potbelly pig named ‘Porky’ or ‘Pork Chop’ is their Manana property security watch. Both Porky and Marina were there managing Glenn throughout this Meyers Manx 10 month build. Glenn did everything with the exception machine work in his two-car garage. He painted his Buggy the Camaro synergy green and black and bended and welded his custom 1 ¾” drawn over mandrel tubing. Other specifics are as follows: AJ Sims turbo kit – T-3/4 Turbo, intake, Turbonetics wastegate and water methanol injection; 82mm counter weighted crank x 94mm Mahle pistons; AJ Sims Turbo Grind Cam; 40 x 35.5 AJ Sims turbo prepped; 7.5:1 compression; MSD distributor and coil; single Holley 500 cfm; Buggy World s 5” shorten SAW axles; 4.12 ring and pinion; Super Diff heavy duty side plates and covers; Welded 3rd and 4th; cockpit sports Kirkey seats, MSE Vertigate Shifter; 10” steering wheel; and gauges; Centerlines all around with 15” x 10” rears wrapped with Mickey Thompson Sportsman 28 x 12, and 15” x 3.5” fronts wrapped with 135s Nankangs with tube. Racing. When Hawaii Raceway Park was the hot spot back in the day, Glenn raced his Vega there a few times. Since the closure of Hawaii Raceway Park, Oahu racers resorted to outer islands. Glenn is already preparing for Bug-In 4 in Hilo, Big Island. Along with repeat racer from Waipahu, Oahu, Henry Ramiro will make the trek to flash down the ¼ mile. Rumor has it that couple other Oahu VW racers will be showing up in Hilo, too. Glenn is not looking to take the trophy home, but just curious how his 1400 lb machine will perform at its maximum limit. No doubt, Glenn and Marina Yahiku are proud owners of their ‘HOT-VW’.
