It’s been very exciting for our family here at Hawaii Motorhead Magazine with the growth of our publication over the last few months. Now that we’ve expanded our coverage of everything motorsports to the entire state and Las Vegas, we’re making new friends everyday and helping to keep motorheads everywhere in touch with what’s going on in our motorsport world. Thanks to all of you for helping us spread the word to all your friends and family as well. In April we grew to more than 85,500 hits on our website and continue to grow each month. Mahalo plenty for your support. Don’t forget Fathers Day is coming up this month. So, what is a Dad?

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail... Happy Fathers Day! Enjoy the ride! - Nelson

It was supposed to be just a daily driver when Chris Santos and his wife Erin of Hilo purchased the new 2008 Tacoma. They even promised each other it wouldn’t be like Chris’ last toy that was lifted to the moon. Maybe just some nice wheels down the road and maybe a leveling kit, maybe. Well, it still had the paper plates on it when Chris started round one with a lift and well, we all know one thing leads to another and now as you can see its one Crazy Tacoma! The first go around Chris lifted the Tacoma with it’s independent front suspension, with the Fox Racing reservoir shocks all around. But Chris wasn’t satisfied with the truck being just another pretty face in the crowd, just another toy with a lift and wheels. He wanted something different so he called the guys at All Pro Off-Road and together with the guys at Diamond Axles they shipped everything Chris needed to take his ride from cool to Loco!

Chris installed the 3-link solid axle conversion with billet links and had his friend Jay Boy Aguiar paint all the pieces to match the truck. Chris fabricated the steering stabilizer mounts to accommodate the dual Fox reservoir shocks. The loco looking wheels are 20x14 Fuel “Hostage” Off-Road rims with custom Semilocks from OMF Performance wrapped in 35” Nitto Mud Grappler rubber. The motor is the stock 4.0 V-6 with an intake, headers and a complete billet pulley kit and silicone hoses for a super clean look under the hood. The interior features mucho billet goodies, DVD system and pillar gauges to keep an eye on things on and off road. Chris says, “I’m planning on upgrading the sound system next” as we laughed about how it’s never really ever finished! Chris thanks his wife Erin for being the greatest support system anyone could have and also his buddies Shilo, Jaysen Kushi from Top Notch Automotive and Bryce Hamamoto from 808 Tint Factory. Chris, pictured with his daughter Analani also wanted to dedicate his ride to his brother Calsey who past about a month ago. “I’m sure your brother is very proud!”

On May 5th the Maui Motocross Association gave us look at the future of our motocross sport with their bi-monthly “Mini Bike” race at the MMA mini track at Maui Raceway Park in Pu’unene. The keiki kicked up dust and threw roost just like the big boys on their 50cc, 60cc and Pit Bikes. Our cover shot this month is a MMA rider who’s just 3 year old rippin’ it up on an electric dirt bike! The adults got to play too with the adult Pit Bike race, which is always a crowd favorite. Big people on little bikes is always fun to watch. The next race is scheduled for Saturday, June 9th on the MMA’s main track with the keiki getting they’re chance again on July 14th. For more information on the club and motocross racing at Pu’unene visit their website at www.mauimotox.com or call the MMA hotline at 808-573-4100

Once a year the biggest party town in America throws the Biggest Rockabilly Weekend in the World!!!! VIVA LAS VEGAS! “Viva Las Vegas” Rockabilly Weekend at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas presented by Tom Ingram each spring is so many things. Live music, DJ’s, the worlds finest car show, a burlesque competition, vintage fashion show and much, much, more. Heck you can even get married at the Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel! The car show is the best of its kind anywhere. Cars are strictly pre-63 that have to be in the style of that era. Classes include Stock Classics, Finished Cars, Un-Finished Cars, Hot Rods, Customs, Nostalgic Race Cars, Rat Rods and even a class for Motorcycles (pre-63 and period correct of course). The burlesque competition has become one of the major events on the Burlesque calendar. Between October 1st and January 5th, hopeful contestants submit their photos and information onto the Viva Las Vegas website. Once all possible contestants have been submitted, the judging begins! A panel of judges will choose 3 contestants to go to the finals. Followed by the contestants who will pick a fourth finalist. Then the judges will choose another 10 who go into the online voting during January, from which the top four go to the live final at VLV making a total of 8 competitors. The eight competitors will then battle it out on Saturday evening to win the final VLV Burlesque Competition. Prizes include cash, gift vouchers, merchandise, photo shoots, and publicity. Tickets are already on sale for next years event scheduled for March 28th – 31st 2013, and with over 700 cars and more than 20,000 attending Viva Las Vegas each year, if you wanna be there for this amazing party, get your tickets before they sell out! “Aloha race fans & car lovers! On Sunday, April 29, our club had it’s 1st “race incident.” The vehicle lost control near the finish line and slid into our timing tent. Fortunately, of the five people in the timing tent, only one person was hospitalized and he was released the next day. Although all precautions were followed, the unthinkable happened. I have now moved our timing tent behind the safety of a cement barricade and a chain link fence. Hopefully this will prevent a similar incident happening again. Now spectators can watch up close the timing operations. It’s a mental juggling act keeping the times accurate and the cars running in order. Ask “Mr. Timing & Scoring,” Glenn Swanson - he’ll answer all your questions! I want to thank our club members for acting quickly and doing exactly what they were supposed to do in this type of situation. And a special MAHALO to the EMTs, fire and police who responded within minutes. You never know how glad you are to have them until you really need them. So, yes, racing can be dangerous - that’s why we race at the track - in a controlled area - where it’s safe - not on the streetwhere it’s deadly. The results for this race were cancelled. Sunday, May 6, was a picture perfect race day! No rain in sight! Toby Olney took fastest time of day with a blistering 88.125 in his awesome Ariel Atom! I secured the second fastest time in my 1999 supercharged Miata with a 94.334 and won my class. BUT, remember - this is an RTP (Racer’s Theoretical Performance) Championship Series - so handicaps come into play. Toby got bumped to 18th place & I got demoted to 8th spot. So, who came in first? Who was the “best driver?”That would be the ever smiling Brandon Wilks in his 1999 VW Jetta TDI - yup, a diesel - don’t laugh! And he was closely followed by Michael Oates in his 1990 Mazda Miata and Roy Whitney in his 2011 MIni Cooper S.

June 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 11 ©RBCV Photography

With almost thirty drivers competing (yes, you can still join the fun) - these are the top five point holders to date: 1. Roy Whitney (29160pts) 2. Michael Oates (29090pts) 3. Brandon Wilk (29074pts) 4. F. Brian Dorr (28617pts) 5. Allen Stueben (28408pts) If you would like to see the complete results for the May race or the current points standing, go to www.bigislandscca.org And check us out on Facebook at Big Island of Hawaii Region SCCA. Better yet, come on out and check us out - as a spectator (free!) or a worker or a driver! The next event is Sunday, June 10 - we’ll be looking for you! “Keepin’ it off the streets & takin’ it to the track!” F. MEET

J y r Hen

Henry J

The 1951 was first introduced in February 1950 at the Chicago Auto Show. The Henry J was manufactured using funding from a government loan granted by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Part of the agreement was that the car would sell for $1299. To achieve this, features such as trunk lids and glove compartments were not included. The trunk was a $25 option. Today it fits the criteria of many hot rod builders who want to take the smallest car possible and stuff the biggest motor you can find in it! And that’s exactly what John Mills of Klamath Falls, Oregon did. In 2007 John drove the Henry J to Hot August Nights in Reno where Al Canteres of Oahu bought the car and shipped it home to Hawaii. When the Super Ferry started running between Oahu and Maui, Al took the car to Maui to visit his buddies and cruise the Valley Isle, that’s where the current owner Clyde Almeida fell in love with the car. “Everyone on the Super Ferry fell in love with the car too. Everyone was checking it out and talking about the car.” Said Clyde.

J y r n He

MEET

The car is also a real nice driver despite its Pro Street appearance and the rumble of the 468 Big Block Chevy motor popping out of the hood. The under driven Don Hampton 671 Blower feeds “tire frying” horse power to the shortened 9” rear end with steel axles and extra meaty Mickey Thompson 31x18 tires mounted on Weld Racing wheels. Body mods include frenched headlights and taillights, recessed license plate, and shaved door handles and bumpers. The rear fenders were also molded to the body and custom roll pans front and rear make up for the absence of the bumpers. The plush interior is real comfy with its cloth bucket seats, along with modern billet accessories, sound system, power windows and door locks and pops. And how about what Clyde calls the “Love Seat” between the rear wheel tubs. All you need is a chauffeur and a bottle of wine! If you’re looking for a real crowd pleaser, you may be in luck. Clyde has just added a couple of new rides to his collection and is looking to make some room. He’s in the phone book.

Kahuku Style

The Hawaii Motocross Association held its 2nd MX race of the summer, and Round 11 of the 2011/2012 season at the famed Kahuku track on Oahu’s North Shore. Photographer John Moses brings us these great photos of the fast paced action of the May 20th event. The day started with the youngest riders on 50cc mini’s from the Beginner class to the School Boy class where riders race up to 250cc bikes. The big bikes then filled the gates as riders from around the islands raced for points in hopes of finishing the season on top. Bronson Hethcote took the top spot in both the 2500cc Expert and 450cc Expert classes on his Suzuki RMZ’s while Keoki Silva-Vares placed 2nd in the 250 Expert and 4th in the 450cc Expert class on his Kawasaki KX250F. Alex Feyerisen also battled his way to both a 3rd place finish in the 450cc Expert class on his Kawasaki KX250F and 3rd in the 250cc Expert class. I think these guys should get an Ironman trophy for finishing in both classes! The next motocross race is the HMA Invitational State Championship Motocross Race (2011/2012 season, round 12) set for Saturday, July 7th and Sunday July 8th. For more details log on to www.ridehma. com and we’ll see you at Kahuku!

“We

all love our toyz! And Kona’s Jason Shelfow of German Toyz V-Dub Club has a lot to love about his latest toy, a 1959 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia he found on the Samba out of Vacaville, California. With the help of his girl friend Darcy, who drives a ’62 Rag Top Bug, (you gotta love it when your girl loves toyz too!) Jason had the Ghia stripped down, body worked and painted this beautiful Silver Storm Metallic. His buddy Glen Billaber of Kona did the 6 ½” narrowed front beam that drops the nose to the pavement and tucks the Randar wheels and the

155/60 rubber way up in the fenders. In the rear the original Randars are wrapped in 175/60’s. Jason has a knack of finding great deals as he did with interior of his German toy. The seat covers and door panels are from California Pacific JBugs and the carpet kit was also a steal of a deal on the Samba. Scott Marvin got Jason the Hook up for the Kicker components and Kenwood deck. Scott also gets credit for the super clean install with

Kicker Sub and amp behind the rear seat and front kick panels. The trunk also got the same attention with refinished gas tank and carpet liner. The daily driver gets around our island paradise with a built 1641cc engine with an Engle 110 cam and electronic points SVDA distributor. The dual port heads are topped with dual 40 Kadrons and mated to a Freeway Flyer transmission from KRC Transmissions of Riverside, California. Jason also wanted to thank his friend Joey Peardon for helping with the build. Look for Jason and his sweet German Toy all over the Big Island. He’ll be the one behind the wheel with a big ‘ol smile on his face!

It finally stopped raining in Hilo long enough for the 808MX/ATV Association to hold its May 5th race at their Hilo track, but a few days of rain before race day made for mud bog like conditions. But like most kids (4yrs old to 40+) a little mud just meant all the more fun! The muddy conditions did prove to be the most challenging for the youngsters on the mini quads as many needed help from parents and track crew getting through or out off mud that was a foot deep in some places. But overall it was a fun day of racing for everyone. The race also raised much needed food for the Hawaii Island Food Basket as a canned food donation gave you $2 off your admission. Next month we’ll bring you coverage from the May 19th make-up race as the association made the most of great weather. The next scheduled race is June 10th. ‘32 DELIVERY It was quite a sight when T&T Towing delivered this 1932 Ford Delivery to Scotty G and the boys at SKG Auto Body Inc. in Kona. The yellow tie down strap was basically holding the truck together and what little of body that was left was tied to the frame with a mile of rope. When they got it into the shop and took the strap off, the body leaned over to one side due to the lack of most of the original wooden frame and floors that the ‘32 was built with there to hold it up. Oh boy! Scotty was commissioned by an Oahu company that wanted to restore the old delivery to help promote their business by using it once again as a daily delivery truck. So here we go! First the guys laid out all the parts and assessed what was there and what wasn’t. Some old bodywork needed to be cut out and redone and careful measurements made to fit all the doors and panels together. It was very evident that all the wood needed to be replaced, so

while Scotty called around for the wood (and dug up all his old wood working tools) the guys went to work re-skinning the doors, rebuilding pillars and rocker panels. KRP DRAGS!

It was a picture perfect evening as the “supermoon” framed the quarter-mile track at Kaua‘i Raceway Park on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Seemingly, racers were challenged with the view of the moon as it remained a backdrop to the track, perhaps even conflicting with the Christmas tree, at times. As the focus zoomed in to the ladders, it was apparent that the climb to the top was stopped by a few red lights— and break outs, from chasing the moon! In the end, winners in each bracket racing competition not only earned bragging rights and a monetary award, but received the prestigious Wally trophy, in celebration of NHRA National Dragster Challenge. Garden Isle Racing Association (GIRA) is a non-profit organization, with an all-volunteer board and over 100 members. The association holds monthly family-oriented drag race events at Kaua‘i Raceway Park to promote safe motorsports and safe driving on public roads. GIRA is preparing for the upcoming 3rd Annual Rudy Ramos Independence Day Race to be held on Friday and Saturday, July 6 and July 7, 2012 at Kaua‘i Raceway Park. If you are interested in participating in this event or need more information, visit www.dragrace-kauai.com or call Bobby Barros, GIRA president at 635-6034.
