Well the 2010 Car Show season is off to a fantastic start with the success of the 1st Project Grad “Rod & Custom Car Show & Concert” to help fund Grad Night festivities for the graduating class of 2010, Kealakehe High School ! On Saturday night, February 6 almost 150 custom cars, trucks and motorcycles filled the football field of Kealakehe High School as a fund raiser for this great cause, to keep our kids safe on graduation night by keeping them off the street with grad night festivities that go on from the time they accept their diplomas till the next morning! I also believe that each year this event will be bigger and better now that people know what to expect or have heard what a great show they may have missed out on.

Usually when people come to our car shows we have a DJ, maybe a small band on the back of a flatbed truck. This was so much bigger than that. And it was so cool to hear people talking as they came through the gate and saw the big concert stage like the main stage at the big KWXX Down Town Ho’olaulea! 15 foot video screen and all. The entertainment was great with the Green Machine, Mele Ku, Anuhea and Ekolu jamming on the big stage while the crown checked out all the cool rides and displays from local vendors. Demon
We all have our demons, but they’re probably no where near as much fun as this one! Alvin Villanueva of Kona, a landscaper by trade and the newly appointed Kona Chapter President of the Pilau motorcycle club started to build his Demon in 2005 with Clayton Baltero of Candy Chop Customs in Hilo . The guys started with a ’04 SMW, Southern Motorcycle Works Demonation roller and proceded to add their custom touches to it. The SMW frame with a 46 degree of Rake, Positive 2” on the down tube stretch and a 5” back bone stretch and a 41mm American Suspension front end is also fitted with a 250 fatty rear tire. The wheels are SMW Testament billet units with 18 x 10.5” in the rear and 21’s up front. The tank is an SWM Demonition style while the guys chose to modify fender blanks from Fat Kat for a full fender look. Check the 1939 Ford teardrop taillight that’s been modified with a LED cluster. After the sheet metal was all pau and everything test fitted, Jay Aguiar of Hilo sprayed the purple base while Chris Beckett gets credit for the wicked graphics. Motivation comes via a 100 cube RevTech with Crane Hi 4 ignition and Paul Yaffe X Pipes and is mated to an Unlimited 6 speed transmission with BDL 3” open primary.

The handle bars are from Red Neck Engineering and the controls are Hawg Haulters from SMW while the slick mirrors are from Arlen Ness. Alvin did all the wiring and seeing that it’s a “work in progress” according to Alvin , he recently swapped out the black solo seat for a Crime Scene Choppers solo – Hard Ass and “P Pad” for the rear fender. But Alvin is now thinking he may just do a custom pan and keep the cool solo and “P Pad” that gets a lot of interest from everyone. After moving back to the Big Island after a couple of years in Washington state the Demon, believe it or not is Alvin ’s daily driver. He and Clayton are talking about new projects and the possibilities of expanding Candy Chop Choppers now that business is starting to pick up again. We’ll keep you posted. On Saturday night, February 6th, McDonalds of West Hawaii, Big Island Toyota and KWXX presented the 1st Project Grad “Rod & Custom Car Show & Concert” featuring 150 custom cars, trucks and motorcycles competing for the huge 4 foot tall “Peoples Choice” trophies in 11 different classes while some of Hawaii’s top entertainers hit the big stage including amazing performances from Anuhea, The Green and Ekolu! And, it was all for a great cause, a fundraiser for grad night festivities for the 2010 graduating class of Kealakehe High School . There was lots of eye candy with custom cars, trucks and motorcycles from all over the Big Island . Many seen for the first time in Kona. The VW’s were out in force with nearly 30 VW’s on display from split window bugs to full race bugs and dune buggies to 21 window busses. The trucks were also making a statement with somewhere around 25 entries. Rob from the new West Side Audio wowed the crowd with his H2 Hummer seen on pages 12 & 13 with his massive sounds and 40” LCD screen. West Side Audio will be putting on a sound off competition at our next show, the Transmission Technology “Run to the Sun” Poker Run & Car Show on April 17th from 1-4pm at the Big Kona K-Mart. Get ready for this one its gonna be big!

The Hot Rods, American Classics, American Street , Corvettes and sports car classes also had lots to drool over as well and the people picked the winners. Prizes also included a 42� Plasma TV from Miller Surf & Sports, Nintendo Wi from Transmission Technology, a RC Truck from Lets Go Banners that matched the cool Titan they had on display, a Custom ported RE sub from West Side Audio, an engine stand from NAPA Auto Parts and a bunch of cool beach gear from the Sports Authority. Next years show promises to be even bigger as we look to raise even more money for Project Grad. Thanks again everyone for making our 1st Project Grad Car Show and Concert a great success! Car shows are not the only motorsport events that are off and running in 2010. The Hilo Motor Speedway Association ran their season opener on February 13, 2010 at the Hilo Motor Speedway dirt oval next to the Hilo Drag Strip. Mostly sunny skies with a couple of passing showers to keep the dust down made for great racing conditions. The association worked hard over the winter break to improve the track surface so be expecting more nail bitting, okole sqeezin, fast racing action this season. Some of the season opener winners included Anthony Vicar in the #3 taking the Winged Sprint class, Buck Pope in the X2 in the V8 Modified, and Haweo Vicar in the #2 car winning the V8 Stock class. aturday February 20 2010. The site, HaleKahaKai. Weather conditions, Excelent. Die Hards, regulars, and new drivers made it out here for another fun and dry day for R/C rock crawling competetion. At least 5 breaching whales kept the club company as team A’AMA held their second competetion of the 2010 season. This day, the club saw a few things that was not seen in awhile. Negative Scores and all drivers completing the course’s. Congrats to Ryan U. once again for winning his second competition this season with an impressive score of a -13. A two in a row win for Ryan thus fortifying his points lead. As of February 20 2010. Ryan also became the second driver to pull off a two in-a-row win since the club’s begining nearly three years ago. He said he is not counting his chickens yet being this early in the season but he IS looking foward to three in-a-row at the next one. At a score of 30, Jerome S. finished strong this day by pulling off the only perfect score of the day, but still not good enough to take the #1 spot. Mike S. scored a 47 and held tight to the third spot with consistant driving and a cheerful attidude. And Huge Props to Pocho from Kau for breaking into the top four spot with a 65 score. Being only his fourth time competing, he is quickly moving up to be a contender for the points champion. Our teams first ever driver all the way from Kohala, Alan, shot right into place with the #5 bragging rights. In 6th place, R/C heavens new driving style kept this team alive by being one of the few to have a negative score of the day, totaling a score of 73. Keep in mind comp. #3 will be held at Break Wall (left) coming march 20th 2010. As always, the public is welcome to come down and see what this is all about. THE APOSTLES Well I’ve been doin’ this Club scene article for about a year now and every issue gets more exciting to write as I get to meet a lot of Bikers I’ve seen in passing on the highways, and also meeting in my opinion, some Legends in our Local Biker community. So, at this past Toys for Tots in Hilo, I saw a patch that I had only heard about in talk story sessions with my fellow club Member Gilbert Smith (HHH). I like to sit and talk story about Ol’ days with Gilbert because I was either living in California at the time…..or I wasn’t born yet. LoL. So, I see this patch on this Uncle, a Red & White Patch with the Name “Apostles”, and I thought whoa! I remember Gilbert telling me about these guys. But I thought they were pau. So I asked Gilbert if he could put me in contact with someone from the Crew. So I called up a Braddah by the name of Vernal Veincent, who happens to be the father of a very good friend of mine, Shane Veincent of the Rap Group “Sudden Rush”. And, Uncle Vernal shared with me how The Apostles were formed & how they came back! The Apostles were formed in the early 60’s by a group of 12 friends from Hilo that all rode motorcycles together. Back in those days, anyone riding a motorcycle was looked at as an Outlaw so Bikers grouped together for the common bond and to hang with guys with the same Outlaw attitude. Some of these 12 braddahs are some of today’s legends in our Biker community. Some of the Original members included of course, Uncle Vernal, Frank Dacanay now President of the Ali’i’s, The Calicidan Brothers Rudy, Segundo & John the founder of Red Legion M/C and father of “Hawaiian Johnny” as he’s known as a Member of the Hell’s Angels Oakland Chapter. And, Burt Tagawa , German & Wayne Waipa now of Koa Puna. They were inspired by the Hell’s Angels of course which is why they chose the colors Red & White. Back then there was one other M/C known as the Hilo Motorcycle club & a car club known as the Road Devils. Which led the boys to come up with a similar outlaw style name. They chose the “Apostles” because like in the Bible, there were 12 Apostles and their Club at that time had 12 members. The name, colors & patch just all fit together perfectly. They also had no designated leader or officers. They were Brothers & that’s all that mattered... the “3 B’s” as we say… “Bikes. Beer” & well, u know da rest…lol! After membership grew and years of riding & partying together, they eventually all parted ways with many joining or starting up other clubs. Then about a year ago the Braddahs decided to regroup. Johnny Calicidan who returns to Hawaii from California often and his brother Rudy still had the Original Patch. So John took it to Cali, had it redone then visited the Oakland Chapter of The Hell’s Angels to ask permission to use the Red & White Colors. Then phone calls were made to da Ol’ timers from back then to reform and now with many of the original members’ sons & grandsons riding , there is a new generation added to the original Ohana. I was fortunate to go ride with The Apostles the Saturday after I interviewed Uncle Vernal and I tell you, what a powerful experience to get to cruise & make “Big Body” (LOL) with some true “O.G’s”. I think that’s what sets us Hawaiian Bikers apart from the rest of the world….”TRADITION!” So for all u Bikers out there from my generation & younger. If you see the Apostles at an event, pay your respect, cause they helped paved the way! AUURYYTE!! C-U ON DA ROAD CUZZINS! Jazzy…..

ELECTRONIC VERSUS HYDRAULIC CONTROLS Electronic control of transmissions and transaxles began in the early 1980’s Transmissions and transaxles manufactured during this period used an on-board computer to control the converter lockup clutch. Later, some transmission shifts were made by electrical solenoids controlled by the computer. Pressure and temperature switches, input and output speed sensors. And fluid level sensors were also installed to monitor transmission operations. Since the 1990’s almost all transmissions and transaxles have been comper controlled. In addition to shifts and converter clutch apply, the computer sometimes controls line pressures and detent operation. The computer can also use solenoids to control the initial application pressures of some clutches and bands to improve shift feel. Electronic controls are more precise than hydraulic controls. They can take engine, vehicle and atmospheric conditions into account. They can also precisely control the pressures to the holding members, resulting in smooth shifts that reduce holding member wear. Precise control of shifts reduces transmission fluid overheating, lengthens transmission/transaxle life, and eliminates the need to adjust linkage. Overall vehicle benefits from precisely controlled shifts are better mileage and performance, and decreased emissions. A vehicle with electronic transmission/transaxle controls also operates more smoothly, with shifts that barely perceptible. All automatic transmission and transaxles, whether electronically or hydraulically controlled have similarities. They all use a torque converter, hydraulic pump, planetary gears, clutches and bands, and manual linkage. The main difference is the hydraulic control system. On older transmissions, the shifts valves were operated by governor pressure and throttle pressure. When governor pressure rose above throttle pressure, the shift valve moved to the up shifted posion. When throttle pressure overcame governor pressure, the shift valve moved to the downshifted position. A completely electronic transmission does not have governor and throttle valves. In their place are electrical solenoids that control shifts and pressures, and sensors that monitor transmission, engine, and vehicle conditions. An on-board computer processes the inputs from the sensors and controls the operation of the output solenoids to produce the proper pressures and shift points. Today, all transmission/transaxles are electronically controlled with a TCM (Transmission Control Module) and integrated with all the other vehicles module. When an erratic shift occur, the problem could be caused by a faulty control glitch in the TCM and not necessarily the transmission. For a complimentary road test please call Transmission Technology. Munar and his girlfriend Aysha O’Brien recently opened a new car audio shop in Kona called West Side Audio. They made a big impression last month at the Project Grad Rod & Custom Car Show & Concert with Aysha winning the People’s Choice award for Best Sport Compact with her 2003 Mercedes and Rob taking the People’s Choice award for Best 4x4 Truck with this black beauty. A 2005 Super Charged Hummer H2! The suspension was cranked up a few notches with a 6” Rancho lift kit with dual Rancho shocks at each end up front that make room for the big shoes. Now, for a ride with this much star power its only fitting it be rolling on 24” Rock Stars! The wheels are wrapped in 37”x 24” Toyo M/T Open Country’s and dual chrome nerf bars protect the rocker panels and help Rob and crew climb in and out of the high roller. The interior features Katskin leather seats with Ostridge inserts and lots of carbon fiber. But the real show stopper is the audio/visual package in this baby. The head unit is an Alpine IVA W505 – DVD player with 7” LCD monitor. The Big Island Hot Rod Association ran its second race of the New Year on February 6, 2010 at the Hilo Raceway facility with its monthly “Outlaw Drags” program. Another great turn out of both racers and race fans showed up for a good time. Photographer Jim Riddiford captured some of the highlights of the day’s action.

HOT ROD PARTS TRUCK Here ya go! One sweet little parts getter by SKG Auto Body Inc. Over the last several months we followed the build of Scott Gesling’s Hot Rod Shop Truck. A 1936 Ford pick up that started life as a farm truck in Idaho that’s now been fitted with a 1934 Ford coupe front fenders, hood, radiator shell, running boards and a hand built bed. The Heidt’s frame host a Mustang II front end with tubular A Arms and rack and pinion steering and a Ford 9 inch with 4 link set up in the rear. The 350 crate motor has been treated to a bunch of go fast goodies, billet and chrome. Of course the body modifications are many with the chopped and channeled cab with suicide doors and hand built bed. But the 1934 front sheet metal was no easy task either.

Scotty sprayed the satin finish and outfitted the hand made bed with Koa wood and the slick keg gas tank. There are a few more things that need to be finished up. But, I did want everyone to know that Scotty and his crew busted their butts to get the truck finished in time for the Project Grad show where we had hoped to debut this one off custom. They did manage to get her rolling, but not before the show gates closed at 4:30pm. Unfortunately, it was 9:45pm by the time the truck rolled out of the shop that night. But don’t worry, the truck will be at the Transmission Technology “Run to the Sun” Poker Run & Car Show on April 17th at the Kona Big K-Mart where you’ll get to see it up close and personal. Spikes Waikoloa Clubhouse.
It’s the “Best kept secret in West Hawaii !” But not for long! The good word is quickly spreading about the new Spikes Waikoloa Clubhouse that opened in September of 2009.
Located in the heart of Waikoloa Village on one of the best golf courses on our Big Island , the Waikoloa Village Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course, Spikes Waikoloa Clubhouse is serving up what restaurant manager Kenneth Kwok calls “affordable luxury.” While crusin’ for grinds at Spikes we fell in love with the people, the food and fun atmosphere of being right there on the golf course. Before tasting we were given the grand tour of the newly renovated venue and as we went from the inviting entrance to the first dinning room my head started spinning with ideas and visions of group meetings, intimate parties or even themed events. The larger dinning room opens onto the golf course and the swimming pool and is perfect for larger get togethers or even corporate events or golf tournaments as they are having this month on the 27th in conjunction with their Grand Opening. The bar and open air seating area is also very comfortable and overlooks the golf course with Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in the background! What a great place to get together with friends and family. We then met Executive Chef, Suelynn Bethea and realized why people were raving about the food and the presentation. Spikes has assembled a team of very talented people. platter which you’ll find on their pupu menu which consist of Pipikaula, Keawe Smoked Pork, Teriyaki Beef and House Sausage which that day was a Louisiana Hot Baked Sausage. Sooooo ono. Tender and moist and not at all greasy. A true testament of a local favorite, and a real winner! And yes gang, you can order it with rice and make a meal out of it! We then had Spikes Cobb Salad. The best I’ve ever tasted! From the fresh Waimea greens to Spikes own house dressing and croutons this is a must try for lunch or dinner. They also have their own herb garden there at Spikes. You can’t get fresher than that! Then for our main dish we asked for the special that day, having heard about the how good the fish is at Spikes. A grilled swordfish served with a panko crusted Okinawan sweet potato cake that was to die for, topped with stir fried fresh vegetables including green papaya, Maui onions and bell peppers. Outstanding! The fish was perfection.

Hello race fans, We have to start off with a big thanks to Nelson and the whole Motorhead staff for putting on a great car show last month. Vic from Transmission Technology and Ty from T&T towing also get a thanks for their help and everyone else that helped with Project Grad THANKS. Now, back to racing, with a few months of rubber on the new parts of the track I regeared my kart and went for a new speed record through the chicken turn. After getting the tires good and hot I went for it. I got a good run off the drag strip turn and I was moving as fast as I have ever gone on this track when I reached the chicken turn. I’m so glad that we filled in the Dog Leg with new asphalt because I used all of it backwards. No, I did not make the turn. What a rush to do a 65mph.+ spin, so no record this time maybe I’ll try again next month. If this sounds like your kind of fun come on down to the race track at our next race and give it a try. The next race is on March 13th. and April 3rd. Our fast kids this month were in the Kids class- Klyson Kaiwi, JR1- Cole Prettyman, JR2- Drew Holloway, Sportsman- Mike Holloway, Tags-Tom Sluder.
