Good bye April! What’s happening May! Man it seems the older I get the faster the days go by. Well ready or not here comes May with the big Memorial Day weekend and all the excitement for the car & bike world. Drag Racing, the Mauna Kea 200 World Class Enduro race, motorcycle runs, and the Rockabilly Rod Reunion in Las Vegas just to name a few. And then there’s all that cruisin’! Lots and lots of cruisin’!
What ever you find yourself doing this busy Memorial Day Weekend, please take a moment to give thanks and remember those who gave their lives so that we don’t have to sacrifice all things we love to do. All the things we too often take for granted. Have a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. Please don’t drink and drive. Enjoy the ride! -Nelson

As Victor Patao of Waikoloa drove his recently acquired ’99 Civic home, he had more than a few concerns! “With every bump I hit it seemed like something was falling off. Both driver and passenger windows fell in off the tracks, interior molding and pieces were popping off and I was thinking to myself, I made a big mistake” tells Victor. But it was the type of tuner he was looking for so he kept on driving while making a list of things in his head that he would do to turn it into a keeper! “The first thing I did was install AC” says Victor. The car was never equipped with AC so it took a lot of hours. Victor and his brother even sanded all the AC lines of a used system so it looked better than new. Then he was on the Internet ordering parts, lots of parts, starting with the suspension. The tuner rode like a truck due to the lack of sleeves on the lowered coilovers. Function & Form coilovers replaced the battered old ones along with ASR Sub-frame connectors. Victor invested a good amount of time and money into the suspension because he planned on driving the car everyday and wanted it to have great street handing qualities. Suspension mods also include lower control arms, strut bars, Beaks Tie Bar, C Pillar Bar and a strut tower bar. The wheels are 16x8 Stance, Mindsets with stretched Falken 205/40/16’s. Good luck ever getting those off with out a saw! The next thing Victor tackled was the interior with the addition of Sparco seats and harnesses, Gucci leather inserts and a custom-built sub enclosure that houses a 12” JL sub. He then sunk the amps in the trunk. One 1200 watt amp and a 600 watt amp power the sub and Alpine speakers. The deck and digital Epi-

center EQ are also Alpine units. The body is stock with JDM lip, side skirts and side marker lights. A carbon fiber wing and side mirrors, JDM style black housing headlights and all red tails round things off on the exterior. Now, when Victor bought the Civic it had an original GSR motor under the hood. “But I blew it up” says Victor, so he replaced it with a re-worked 1.8 Liter Integra Type R! Some of the mods include Skunk II Cam Gears, Carbon Fiber Intake and 70mm Blox throttle body and a hand polished Victor X manifold. OBX headers blow through a 2 ½ inch Cat Back exhaust with an Apex N1 stainless muffler. An aluminum radiator with SamcoSport silicone hoses keep the temperature in check while a 75 Shot Nitrous Express system is at his finger tips for a “little extra” when you need it. Innovative racing motor mounts anchor the power plant in the custom finished engine compartment that Victor painted with a gloss black base followed by Fireball Flakes and what seemed to more than a gallon of clear to cover the massive flakes. I say it was well worth all the time. Cool touch! The trans has been upgraded to handle the added horsepower with carbon-lined synchros, lightened Spoon Sports flywheel and Exedy Clutch. Victor thanks his wife Leah for her support, his brother for all his help and his son KK pictured here with dad for helping to make this one a real keeper!

The 3rd Annual “BUG IN” on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 & 22 once again packed in the racers and the crowd with two full days of drag racing, car show and swap meet at the Hilo Drag Strip. The drags ran along side the Big Island Auto Clubs April race so spectators had plenty of tire smokin’, wheel standing action by VW’s and V8 racers alike. This year tickets were only $5 with a food donation to help with the Hawaii Island Food Basket’s food drive and was a great success as Bug-In was one of the most attended races of the year. The car show and swap meet was a favorite by many with rows and rows of vintage Bugs, Karman Ghias, Busses and Buggies. But it was Marc Tavares’ 1962 Notch Back taking the honors of Best of Show. See Marc’s show winner in the April issue of Hawaii Motorhead Magazine. The Big Island VW Car Club, Big Island Auto Club & Bears Automotive Repair thanks all the sponsors including Bears VW/ Audi Repair, Hawaii Sheetmetal, Vee Dub Parts Unlimited, Aloha Signs, NAPA Auto Parts, Transmission Technology, Alpha Electric, Matco Tools, Kenny Chang, Kona Kustoms and Pacific Radio Group. Next race at the Hilo Drag Strip is the Memorial Day Weekend Drags, May 26 & 27. See you there.

In the “Bug” Bracket Danny Namihira of Keeau in his VW bug (10.55 sec/111 mph) beat Runner-up--Terry Enos of Hilo in his VW digger (12.07 sec/107 mph). “Pyro Pete” Comandini was also on hand with his fire-breathing, jet powered dragster to lay down the fastest run of the weekend while roasting a few marshmallows in the staging lanes before each run Full race results on page 11.

Digger
Diggin’ On Derick’s Digger! Derick Matias made the pages of Hawaii Motorhead Magazine in March of this year with his ’36 Rat Rod Ford Truck we dubbed “Raked, Ratted & Roll”. But, before the Rat Truck, he had another ride that matched the theme of this Hot Rod Digger. Although he has since sold that car to move on to the next project(s) he’s having a hard time parting with this sweet little number. The bike originated in California where a local bike builder put his stamp on the custom hard tail frame. The rear being stretch to fit the big 300 Avon rubber. Lloyd Enriquez of Freaky Tiki Customs in Puna brought the bike to Hawaii and put his twist on it before Derick got his hands on it and proceeded to put his

Dericks‘
Digger own twist on things. Swapping the original wheels for these 120 Fat spoke Ridewright wheels with stainless spokes and black powder-coated rims was one of them. “It changed the whole look of the bike” says Derick as he also “pointed” out all the spiked billet accessories from front to back. “My friends all tell me I’m crazy to have so many pointed things on my bike.” She’s a real hot rod style digger with it’s low stance, clean lines, springer front end, no front brakes and wide drag bars. Just the clean look of that cool ass 21 inch spoke front wheel with it’s white wall tire up front and massive 300 tucked under the fender in the rear. The tire frying 125RW horsepower comes from the 113 cube Ultima Brute engine with a bigger cam, custom pipes and ignition and is mated to a Right Hand Drive Baker 6 speed with a 3 inch open belt drive. The old style oil bag and battery box that is mounted under the frame keeps things clean out back and I really like the old skool flames. Derick says “a lot of people think it would be hard to ride with the rake and the 300 rear tire, but it has a really nice balance and its easy to ride.” The stance is perfect and with the combination of old skool style and new skool technology, in my opinion Derick’s Digger is right on the money!

“Aloha!
I’d love to tell you all about our April 29th event, BUT due to the date you’ll have to catch up in next month’s issue of Hawaii Motorhead. However, I will tell you to come on out for our May 6th event, Sunday in Hilo... as a driver, a worker or a spectator (free!) Check us out on our Facebook page - Big Island Region of Hawaii SCCA ! Or on www.bigislandscca.org Soooo, “What is autocrossing?” Well, I’ll tell you that it is not drag racing (we actually use our steering wheel and take a wild combination of left & right hand corners and slaloms.) And, it is not drifting (drifting, though spectacular, is NOT the fastest way around a course.) Autocrossing is a timed event (down to a thousandths of a second) where you can take your ride (most cases your daily driver) and navigate a course marked by orange rubber traffic cones. The course changes monthly. You get 4 timed runs. Most drivers can complete a run in a little over a minute. It’s fast (around highway speeds!) It’s challenging (you against the timer!) It’s affordable (you can use the car you drive every day!) And it’s fun! Lots of fun! And there are no pedestrians or stray dogs to run down. No angry fellow commuters who can’t appreciate your driving technique. AND no disgruntled officers handing you a speeding ticket & offering you handcufffs. Think of it as a trip to the store - on steroids. When compared to other forms of motorsports, the activity level (measured in discrete turns per minute) can be higher than even Formula One Racing due to the large number of elements packed into each course. And it’s ALL about the driver. It’s driver skill not sheer horsepower. It’s a great way for anyone to really learn the handling characteristics of their vehicle. And especially for beginning drivers - it will teach you how to be a competent & safe driver. So grab a helmet and your favorite driving shoes and come out and join us. Never done it before? No worries! We have many seasoned drivers who would be glad to show you the way around. So, the next time you’re at a stop light and think “Wouldn’t it be fun if I could drive as fast as I want?” Save that thought & bring it out to the track - in Hilo - at the Kart course by the drag strip! We’ll be waiting for you maybe with a trophy! “Keepin’ it off the streets & takin’ it to the track!” F. Brian Dorr Regional Executive Big Island Hawaii Region Sports Car Club of America

“Hello Karters! All the rain this year made us start off slow but, April turned out to be great for racing with just a few clouds to keep things cool. Terry had the fast shifter for the day. Skip was too fast in his T.A.G. for me to catch. Skip had some of his friends that just moved here from Norway come out to the track to check things out. Vegard Fyrileiv and Grete Brandenborg moved here to grow coffee, not knowing we had a kart track here. They told us that they had raced karts in Norway 17 years ago. All I can say is that they were real fast. Grete drove Skip’s kart and was almost as fast as Terry in his shifter. It does not take long to get that feeling of “going fast” back again. Our next race is on May 19th. so get those karts off the wall and come on out for some cheap, fast fun. Racing starts at 10am and goes all day. For more info. call Tom Sluder at 939-9746

18/ Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / May 2012 Finally finished! This 1933 Ford Victoria has spent the last 6 or 7 years being passed around from owner to owner trying to finish what Howard Moreira started so many years ago. The original owner commissioned Howard to build the ’33 Vicky but financing got in the way of completing the build so the car changed hands about a half dozen times with each new owner dreaming of finishing the Vicky that started with all the good stuff. The car was to be a Pro Street car with big meats on a shorty rear end so, an Outlaw chassis was the basis of the build. But when Howard got the car back he decided to put a more modern spin on it with 20 inch billet wheels so he had a one-off set of Boyd Coddington wheels made to fit.

Howard also tossed the motor and automatic trans that one of the previous owners was planning on installing and opted for this worked 355 SBC and Muncie 4 speed! racer, he just loves banging through the gears. The Downs body features a chopped top and those really cool station wagon style grooves in the roof, something I haven’t seen on other Vickys. Howard replaced the black grill for a stainless one and the nerf bars are modeled after the ones used on the original California Kid. The black paint has been color sanded and buffed to a mirror finish and Greg Kobayashi gets credit for the Gold Leaf and pin striping. The interior features black leather with red cloth inserts on the seats, a stunning combination on the jet-black car. Dolphin gauges fill the smoothed dash while power everything buttons are mounted in a custom overhead console. Howard and his wife Ginger said this is their last build, but we’ve heard that song before. We’re just glad this ’33 Vicky found its way back home and to the finish line!

The Extreme Off-Road Event HulaCross & MotoCross Kalaeloa Raceway Park April 14th, 2012 Competitors lined up and had a blast at our recent Extreme Off-Road Event featuring HulaCross & MotoCross. The event was held on April 14th, 2012 at Oahu’s only mixedvehicle motorsports venue, Kalaeloa Raceway Park. The event kicked off with practice sessions from our HulaCross & MotorCross drivers & riders. The track was muddy and traction was scarce as they drifted through the turns and took to the jumps for some hang-time. Once the lights came on, the action got heated. Sedans and SUVs were placed in a mixed class for this event. Davin Kubo led the charge for fastest time of the day as well as placing first after battling it out with the field of his fellow competitors. Curtis Bautista came out in second just over Todd Schuler in third after putting on a fantastic show for our spectators. Only practice races were run for the MotoCross, but we had a nice field of bikes & quads taking it to the muddy track. Competitors like Jeremy Moniz, Nephi Young, and Makana DeSoto took turns carving it up. For this event, the truck class was the dominant force featuring a huge line-up of participants. Each one battled through multiple heats with the eventual victors claiming the much-deserved win. Clifford Vierra came out on top with first place while the veteran stalwart, Kilika Bell, took second. Third place went to Michael Alvarez-O’Tani in his 1986 Mazda Truck. It was an incredibly fun, dirty night of muddy racing. Once again, We’d like to thank our sponsors for their continued support as well as our competitors and spectators for par-

Aloha Gnarly Off Road Riders!
No rocks have been kicked off the trail. Also left in place were limbs and sticks camouflaging the big, slippery Albizia tree boa constrictor like roots that crawl over the mud covered, undulating a’a lava surface trails in Lower Kulani and Upper Waiakea Uka Rainforests. The home setting, for day one of the Rock Island Riders 37th annual Mauna Kea 200. 100 miles of world class trails are near ride-ready and ready for inspection for the MK 200 endurance race. Lots of slippery roots have been exposed from us spinning our knobby tires over them in the past 8 months of riding to keep the trails openly rideable. This year more tree logs that have been blown down by the wind have been added tø the 100 mile course with limbs and sticks lurking in the mud ponds under the tall logs shadows... gulp!... Where skill is needed to gas it over the demanding logs, some doubles and a triple set with big limbs that fan out making it hard to keep up the speed momentum it takes to go faster than the crash to get over’em and through the tenting limbs...good video spot. We had really good, gut laughing fun making 4 miles ride able today, as three ATV quads armed with chain saws, machetes, brush hooks, and limb lopper’s and three KTM motorcycles set off into the rain. We followed the brown water roost off Dennis’ knobby that lead us to a GPS spot that was the entrance into a new log infested section with many, many, long Uluhe fern tunnels that we had to use chainsaws to open up ATV wide, as we race qualified this section and named it Lehua’s trail. The many log’s, were challenging to the ATV’s...plenny lift, push, pull stuff’s Brah!... Dennis and I, and Lehua Lau on her KTM 200 were the bike riders, and first to get to the log’s, each of us intensely looking for the best line/speed/timing for the “faster than the crash” moves it would take to get over the many different height and angled log’s we encountered. Us boyz were really impressed to see how fluidly smooth a rider Lehua was, being “no fear” on the gas, cresting the tall log’s and slipping over with ease...we were all...” W0WED”...now that’s a good riding style! Oh ya, it rained all day. But we were so into the labors job at hand, getting wet was unnoticed as we cheered and laughed at each big log challenge watching Steve, Robert and Ed on ATV’s pulling off some heroic moves to get over the log’s. Watching Ed bust through the uluhi fern covered waiwi clusters that took two chain saws to carve tunnels through, while Lehua was right there in the midst of flailing machetes and swinging chainsaws, as she machete hacked fern and dragged off arm loads of long sawed off waiwi and shoving them deep into the side bushes. Believe me, this is a workout in full motorcycle riding gear with a back pack, stumbling on slippery roots on uneven rocky/muddy ground at the same time dodging sharp tools and not getting poked in the eye by a rouge dead branch...she da gal!...Lehua’s trail, is the name earned. The Rock Island Riders will be out every weekend working all the trails up into race day early mornings of May 26 & 27th to make sure trails are marked with ribbons, open and ride able. To put on this two day endurance race, some of the RIR’s will log in 225 hours labor, 600-700 riding miles, two sets of tires, brake pads, $280 in food, $300 gas/oil and ?$ into riding gear and trail cutting tools. But hey!...The Rock Island Riders are a unique crew and love having this fun recreational mind over matter motorcycle challenging workout in making this world class race happen each year for our mainland and outer island riders to come and show they got the right stuff to ride the Mauna Kea 200 and win their class on a world class designed Enduro trails. Just finishing gives one powerful bench racing bragging rights...dis no bulie Brah! ~Rev high, shift quick, blink rapidly~~~~Gasser~

MOPARS AT THE STRIP is a yearly event catering to the Mopar enthusiast and this was it’s tenth year running. It features drag racing, autocross, car show, manufacturers midway, swap meet, and a fun field for those wanting to show their cars but not necessarily wanting to compete in the judged competition. There is also a show and the Mile of Mopars at the Cannery Hotel and Casino, which hosts the event on Friday night with a concert there on Saturday night. Both evening events are free to everyone attending MATS. The racing action is what a lot of people come for. You will see everything from front wheel drive 4 cylinder cars to vintage nitro funny cars. There are three classes of racing that you will see other brands racing in also: Pony Car Wars which is open to 2006 Mustangs, Challengers, and Camaros. “Mopar vs The World” which is a bracket open to...well basically anything you want to run. Then there’s NSS and A/FX which is open to the all the Nostalgia Super Stock and factory experimental cars of 60’s. This is a very fun and exciting class to watch. Bob Riggle and the Hemi Under Glass have been attending MATS for quite a few years and are always happy to give the fans a treat by making a 12 second pass down the quarter mile on the rear wheels.

Hotchkis Sport Suspension puts on the autocross event for all those who like to go fast around the turns. They also have their team of drivers there giving rides to those who have never done any autocrossing and want to see what the thrill is all about. It’s well worth your time to try it! In the manufacturers midway you not only find a lot of vendors specializing in Mopar specific parts, but also the major manufacturers like Edelbrock, Hoosier, and Hotchkis among them. But, if you’re looking for that one specific part to finish your restoration that no one reproduces, then there is always the swap meet. You never know what you might find among all the hidden treasures there. - Photos and story by Craig Tanaka

MAUI
AutoFest
The 1st Annual University of Hawaii, Maui Collage “Auto Fest” was held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 on the Great Lawn of the University of Hawai‘i Maui College. This was a very successful event, which was a collaboration of our Student Government Council and our Automotive Technology Department. We had over 80 vehicles/bikes in categories such as Classics, Muscle, Race, Import, Kart, Drag Bike, Golf Cart, Race, Street/Race and Mini Trucks.
May 2012 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 33 We also had the Ford and Acura Dealerships bring in their new vehicles. In addition to this we had 9 local food truck vendors who provided discounts to all faculty, staff, and students. It was wonderful to see an event that captured the interest from our youth to senior citizens, including getting our youth interested in motor cross, drag racing, remote control cars, and much more. We were able to meet all of the car owners and thanked them for supporting our event. They loved it and we are planning to add this as an annual event, which will be held each spring semester. We are very happy to add that we had over 1000 people in attendance. Here are some of the comments from the attendees. “Fabulous event!” - “I feel like we are at a carnival!” - “I will definitely bring my classic car next year!” - “What a great venue for the community!” - “Love the food trucks!” - “Awesome bikes!” It was such a great event we can’t wait to start planning the next one. Mahalo to everyone who helped make Auto Fest a great success for our community. Photos and story submitted by the Student Life Office
