Hello race fans.! October was a bad month for breakage for me but with help from Aloha Dreams Computers in Ocean View, we’re back on line. I also have to thank the crew at Transmission Technology for getting my old Dodge truck back on the road when the transmission broke.
Now lets talk racing. October’s races were great with no rain and just a few clouds at the Hilo race track. New things this month are the Owens family, Lance, Kimi and a great little 9 year old, Dean. Terry Powell is back from Maui with his TAG kart. Roland Hall had his 16th birthday so he can now race his TAG kart.

Chevy HEAVY
The car port king is at it again! Gordon Tokeshi of Hilo like many of us, has had to get creative during this economic down turn by taking his skills and his passion and making things happen. In January of 2008 we featured Gordon’s blown 1967 RS/SS Camaro that he built from the ground up in his car port! Yes I did say “car port”. As in just a roof with no walls or garage door kinda car port!
Well, since then he sold that one and is now restoring a handful of Heavy Chevy’s for sale and investments including this ‘67 that was being delivered to it’s new owner on the day we took these photos. The car port resto started with a 1967 Camaro RS with the original 327ci mouse with Camel back heads, hopped

up with an Edelbrock intake and carb and hooker headers bolted to a Turbo 350 and 10 bolt rear end with 3:08 gears.
took Gordon just over a year to complete and he’s already working on the next project. A “numbers matching” 1969 Camaro. Interested? We’ll keep you posted!
15x7 rally wheels with Firestones and OE style interior make for a very desirable ride which is why it didn’t take long to find a new home for this beautiful classic.

The build sheet reads like an assembly manual with almost everything being replaced. Example: The Interior! Complete deluxe interior, window cranks, door handles, headlight, ignition, wiper switches, bezels, knobs, instrument cluster housing, lighter housing, sail panel bezel assemblies, gas, brake, emergency brake pedals, brake light switch, emergency brake handle, turn signal arm, flasher knob, glove box lock, inner glove box, rear side panel ashtrays, rear seat divider, seat adjusting knobs, all interior bulbs, rear view mirror……….ok as I come up for air, I think you get the point! The exterior list is just as long and so is the misc. list including the radiator support, grill, headlight bezels, door moldings, front and rear bumpers and the cowl induction hood. After tearing it down to bare bones and replacing all the body panels Gordon fired up the compressor and squirted on the Cortez Silver with Black stripes there in his car port then buffed it to a high luster. The DIY project

And the winner is! The Hilo Motor Speedway Association’s 2010 racing season came to an end in October. And to put an exclamation point on what was a great season for the association, they held another family fun day with racing, games and drivers in women’s undies? OMG! The fun included a few heats of racing for each class and a demolition derby which was a big hit again. The day was capped off with the awards ceremony as the association handed out the hardware for all classes from the Bombers to the Sprints. Special awards each year are also handed out and this year we say congratulations to Driver of the Year “Lawrence Cabral” racing in the Mini Modified Class. Rookie of the Year went to Haweo Vicar who jumped from the V-8 Stock Class to the Winged Sprints, and Sportsman of the year went to Robert Subica of the V-8 Modified class. Way to go guys! The 2011 Stock Car racing season will be here before you know it, February of next year. So get out the torches and your tools, go like crazy over the Holiday season and we’ll see you at the races!

October 2010 / Big Island of Hawaii Region September’s Solo 2 saw some new cars make it to the grid. Toby Olny’s Ariel Atom being the most radical (although perhaps not the most radical we have seen at a Solo 2!), and the long anticipated appearance of Mark Pernell’s new Cobra. While there was plenty of interest in these two exotics, the rest of the crew got down to business as usual, with more earthly bound machines. Nick and Brandon were again responsible for the course, and seemed to find ways to stretch the rev limits and gearing of the smaller cars. Parts of the course were just a little out of reach in low gears, and changing up was just before entry into the braking zones, making for more work. Still, everyone had a good run, but it sure left some of us wishing for a few more revs or some extra torque! Brittni Watanabe and Margie Oates showed the boys a thing or two, both working their cars to the limits. The ladies compete heads up with everyone else, and both these gals looked smooth and fast for their runs. Toby shared the Atom with Jonathan Spiegel, and they both had fun doing a shakedown of the car. It has plenty of power and light weight, and with a short wheelbase, it changes direction quickly. Sometimes very quickly! This was Mark’s first outing in the Cobra, and prudence took precedence over performance as he worked to gain confidence in the car. Another case of high power and relatively low weight, gobs of torque, and pristine paint, he kept the car solidly on the asphalt for his runs. The Miatas were out in force, with Jim Hains, Michael Oates and Jim Cohn representing the class. Brian Dorr, Steve Royston and Rick Bow-
November 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 11
ers also fielded Miatas, but in other classes. Still, we always have a good turnout of these cars, and owners certainly get their enjoyment out of them. Nick Buscher and Brandon Wilk put on their usual performance with the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Jetta, swapping cars to maximize their track time and double their official runs. We usually have time for fun runs, which are extra runs after the days official timed runs are completed, so everyone usually gets their fill. Next event is November 27/28, 2010.

Labor Day Weekend is the biggest bike riding weekend on our Big Island each year, and many builders spend lots of late nights trying to fire up their latest works in time to get in on all the action. So you can imagine the surprise of some as Freaky Tiki Customs Rolled in with not one but 3 new builds! Last month we introduced you to Lloyd Enriquez and his team, including his son Deighton pictured here with his Freaky Tiki Rock Star chopper, another one of the bikes to come rolling out of their shop for Labor Day 2010. Deighton had started on another build when he found out about this Hell Bound Steel roller that his uncle Anthony “Tony” Mayfield had and tried to buy it. Tony wasn’t selling, so Deighton thought that was the end of that. But instead Tony gave him the bike, so Deighton then spread the Aloha by giving his bike to his other uncle who was looking for something to build! Nice how this all worked out huh? The HBS rigid is stretched 6 forward and 4 up with a 45 degree rake and 5 degrees on the 12 over HBS front end. The wheels are PM units wrapped in Avon rubber and the handle bars are from Nohea. “The bars set the whole theme for the bike” says Deighton. “When I bolted up the bars, that’s when the vision of what I wanted it to look like to came us.” The rear hub and belt drive set up is way cool looking and took some time to set up with the belt drive and disc brake on one side. As you can imagine with the belt drive and the brake caliper in board there were lots of clearance issues to deal with! The rear fender is also A Hell Bound Steel piece with custom Freaky Tiki billet struts while the tank is a Jessie James Villain model. Big Boy gets the credit for the paint on all 3 Labor Day builds with this one being 2002 Ford special edition Harley Davidson Black and Silver with Greg Kobayashi lending his talents with the gold leaf and striping. The ’93 HD 80 cube was rebuilt with all the goods including a 550 Crane Cam with roller rockers and ported and flowed heads and topped with a 45 Weber side draft. There’s no “I” in team, and this talented team from Freaky Tiki Customs is the first to give thanks to everyone who helped. Deighton wanted to also thank his grandparents for letting them build at their home, mom and dad and the rest the Ohana for all of your hard work and support. A big Mahalo again to Uncle Tony for the gift and to the rest of the team including Nohea, Uncle Slade, Big Boy Les Castro, Greg Kobayashi and Patrick Crivello! Rock on!

CLUNKERSto

Jim Wulzen Photos & Story
Wow! what a weekend, despite high gusts of wind and some showers the first annual Clunkers to classic car show came on like gang busters! Dorothy and Alii Antolin of Ocean View Auto Parts put together a wonderful program to raise money to buy computers for Naalehu Elementry school. Many businesses in the Ka’u area gave donations, and Dorothy called on many different shops and stores from Ocean View to Naalehu to get sponsors. The car show was hot rods and clunkers, bring um on! We saw everything from beautiful restored hot rods from all over the Island, many from the Hilo side from the Classic Car Club and local entries from the Ocean View area to cars that were pulled out of the weeds and put on display, what a day. They had everything, food booths, raffles, live music and emcee work from KAHU radio 91.7FM from Pahala who also did the trophy presentation and kept the crowd informed throughout the day . Plus an engine elimination contest between a Ford and a Chevy to see how long an engine would last with NO OIL! they drained the oil fired them up and let them go till they expired. The fire

department was on hand just in case something went wrong. People picked a time slot that they thought the car would blow up, they either went with the Chevy or the Ford and made a donation for the school the one with the closest time won a $100.00 Gift certificate. All in all it was a fine day and everybody had a good time. Now everybody is planning for next year with a bigger and better show! Special thanks to KAHU 91.7FM for all their hard work with live radio feed and the emcee work, Tom General Manager from Arrow Hawaii in Ocean View for the land clearing, cinder work on the road and the trailer for the Radio station and the trophies, O-Ka’u-Kakou for their support and “Ra” of Kealakekua for the t-shirt design, Motorhead Magazine for support and help in planning the event, boy scout troop #76, and the LDS church youth group who cleaned up the area before the event, and all the sponsors for the trophies We still need donations to meet our goal for Naalehu Elementry School you can send donations to Ocean View Auto Pars P.O. Box 7063 PMB444 Ocean View ,Hawaii 96737, make out checks to Ka’u Federal Credit Union for Naalehu School. T shirts are still available at $15.00 and $5.00 from each sale goes to Naalehu school, contact Dorothy at 939-8500. Well until next year Mahalo plenty!

win brothers Daran & Daverick Feliciano of Honoka’a both love hot rods and family, so when the twins had a birthday coming up their family and friends helped plan a family cruise! The day started with everyone meeting up at the Parker Ranch Shopping Center where on lookers and passer by’s got a look at some really nice rides. The first stop on the cruise was Spencer Beach Park where they spent a couple of hours cooking and hanging out. My daughter Makana, who took the photos said that at every stop that day, the family was cooking something different! Now that’s my kinda cruise! Hot Rods and good food! The next stop was Mahukona Beach Park on the way to Hawi where they played games and yup,
November 2010 / Hawaii Motorhead Magazine / 19
you guessed it, cooked up another round of ono food. Kamehameha Park in Kohala was next on the list and the sleepy little town rose to the sound of American Muscle as the cruise pulled into town. After resting up (and cooking up more great eats) the twins and their birthday convoy worked their way back to Waimea over the mountain road where they had another short stop at the scenic point before ending at Daran’s house in Waimea to party the rest of the day away. Happy Birthday guys! And thanks for sharing some of your special moments with us.

Cruisin’ at Krua Thai Cuisine On days like these, I love my job! Earlier this year we did a story about Krua Thai Cuisine in Kailua-Kona and the renovation that included fully enclosing the restaurant with air conditioning and a high dollar fresh air filtration system normally found only in high end resorts. Well, the extra time and money was definitely worth it as Krua Thai Cuisine re-opened for business and patrons were treated to authentic Thai cuisine in a healthy dining atmosphere! The authentic Thai Cuisine, created by real Thai chefs from Thailand, is nothing short of amazing and the décor and service really take you to another place when dining at the new Krua. On Crusin’ for Grinds taste test day, owners Sam and Ailyn also had professional photographer Michael Darden there taking photos of the food for their website and advertising and we all got to sample some of Krua’s most popular dishes. We started out with the Emerald Green Curry with bamboo, basil leaves, bell peppers and eggplant that was served with Jasmine Rice and your choice of Tofu, Chicken, Pork, Beef, Duck or seafood with Shrimp or Fish. We had the chicken and it was cooked to perfection. The sauces and the flavor to me is what really sets Krua apart from the others I’ve tasted and the curry is like a staple of Thai food. So you know right away if its the real deal! We then had the sautéed Mahi Mahi, Shrimp and a dish of Soft Shell Crab. WOW! Again the sauce and seasoning was outstanding and the vegetables were perfect. Finally we had a Lobster tail that was to die for! And all of our dishes were just right on the hot and spicy meter! And of course you can order your favorites as hot or as mild as you like. And if you really like um hot, you can try what Sam calls Thai “Local” food. Smokin’ HOT! So, from the presentation to the amazing flavors, great service and comfortable fresh air dining experience, Krua Thai Cuisine on Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona gets a big Motorhead “Shaka!” So get out of the Vog and visit Krua Thai Cuisine, you’ll be glad you did. And be sure to visit them on-line as well at www. kruahawaii.com and join their membership discount where you get 15% off each visit! Outstanding!

UP TO STANDARDS A standard, manual driven, or what we call a stick shift transmission will provide thousands of miles of trouble-free service. Quite often, it will last the life of the vehicle without major repairs. However, driver abuse and normal wear after prolonged service can cause transmission failure. Speed shifting, drag racing, lack of maintenance can damage internal manual transmission parts. With high mileage, parts can also wear and fail. When a grinding sound is heard upon shifting gears, it is called gear clash. Incorrect transmission clutch pedal adjustment, worn shifter linkages, and faulty internal synchronizers may contribute to gear clash. Worn or damaged bearings, cones, and shafts may all prevent the gears from engaging smoothly. Also, wrong fluid type or running the transmission on low fluid level will cause premature wear and internal damage. If your vehicle is equipped with a standard transmission, I recommend to have it serviced at every 30 to 35 thousand miles. A customer told me once that his standard transmission was service free and it didn’t require maintenance. I laughed! There is no such thing as a non serviceable transmission. Every standard transmission where gears are meshed needs to be serviced. Also, when experiencing an immediate change of shift characteristics, address the concern to your favorite technician and get it inspected right away. It might just be low on fluid or a small leak that can be rectified, if not, it will be a leak in your pocket book!!! Transmission Technology specializes in automatic and standard transmissions, high performance modifications and computerized control. We do more than just transmissions so come in for a free road test and check up. Our certified technicians are ready to assist you. In Kona next to Daleco Batteries and Radiator behind Big Island Auto Parts call 331-8310. In Hilo behind Dukes Kilauea Shell Gas Station call 935-1600. On behalf of the entire Transmission Technology team and from my ohana, we would like to wish you and your ohana a wonderful and blessed HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Take care and much aloha. Respectfully, Vic Comesario
