11 years ago this month, I lost my baby brother in a traffic accident. He was just 24 years old with a 5 year old daughter. There was no speeding, drugs or alcohol involved. He simply, lost control of his motorcycle going into a turn, crossed the center line and hit an on coming car less than two miles away from my house. It was the saddest day of my life. 11 years later, I’m still sad. As of press time, our Hawai’i Island roads have seen 25 traffic related deaths so far in 2012. On an island with barely 200,000 people, that’s way too many. (Averages about one death every 10 days). At least half of those accidents involved alcohol or drugs or a combination of both. That just breaks my heart. To me, that statistic clearly states that at least 12 deaths this year could have been prevented. How scary is that? As a wife, mother and grandmother that scares me big time. We live right in the middle of our island and both my husband and daughter are constantly driving to one end of the island or the other for their work (normally round trip of about 120 miles). From the time they leave the house until the time they return safely, I’m praying. If I hear sirens or get a Nixle text message, I’m doing roll call. I call everybody’s cell phones to make sure my gang is okay. It’s gotten so that just getting into your car is one of the most dangerous things you can do. In our August 2012 issue we started running ads that I call our “Don’t Be Stupid” ads in hopes that anyone who sees them thinks twice about drinking and driving or texting and driving. In September, we added another ad encouraging people to watch for motorcycles on the roads. Look Twice and Save a Life. I don’t build these ads and put them in our magazine to take up space or to make a page look good. It is my sincere hope that every single person that sees them or that is reading this right now will maybe drive a little slower, or a little more cautiously, or waits until they are stopped to read that text message, or calls a friend for a ride home if they’ve been drinking, or takes away the keys of a friend who has been drinking. If every one of us does our part, our roads will be that much safer for my family and for yours. Please help. Malama Pono, -Monica

Couple Bryan Laguantan and Liz Ulep of Hilo have a pair of show winning tuners both of which did not start out anything like what you see pictured here. In fact, both cars had to be brought back to life, or as Bryan put it, “back from the dead!” Let’s start with Liz’s 1998 Honda Civic. Bryan bought the Civic for Liz in 2008 as a birthday present and proceeded to do a bunch of work on it. Looking pretty sweet! But Liz got rear-ended and that ended life as a daily driver, at least for the moment. So Bryan and his buddy, well known body and paint guy Alex Visaya stripped the Civic to bare metal. New body panels were ordered to replace the damag from the rear-ender, the trunk, quarter panels and back bumper all needed replacing. Bryan and Liz then spent almost 2 years collecting parts for the resurrection. Meanwhile the work on the body continued with the custom front bumper. Custom? Yup, check this out. A popular upgrade with these ’98 Civics is to replace the front bumper cover with a 2000 model cover. But everyone has one like that, so Alex took the top half of the ’98 bumper and the bottom half of the 2000 bumper and Voila! Custom front bumper. A high end Japan Manufactured ChargeSpeed “Kouki” lip was added for a one-off custom touch that is really not detected by the untrained tuner eye. The rest of the ground kit is also Japan ChargeSpeed pieces. The engine compartment was also smoothed out removing everything from the firewall and even hiding all the wiring within the frame rails. A Chase Bays brake line tuck kit tucks the prop valve and brake lines out of sight as well. Alex sprayed the Japan only Toyota color with PPG Deltron Base/Clear. The interior features U.S. Type R front and rear seats and Liz re-upholstered the headliner and rear compartment tray herself. Blox gauges fill the S.I. gauge cluster and tunes come via a Kenwood deck and Alpine speakers. The C-Pillar bar is a JHP unit. Skunk2 coilovers, Acura Integra disc brakes and 16” ROTA wheels reside at all four corners. Under the hood is a B18 LS VTec Integra motor with lots of goodies including 4-2-1 race headers, 70mm Blox throttle body, Type R intake manifold, STR fuel rail and Walbro 255LPH fuel pump. The ported head feature GSR cams, AEM cam gears and a Hondata S300 computer. Chase Augustine from C.A.R.S.S. gets the credit for the engine build.

The stock tranny was swapped out for a B16 transmission with Competition Stage 4 clutch and flywheel. Bryan and Liz send special thanks to Alex & Aries Visaya & the Visaya Boys for the countless hours of help to go from Zero to Hero with this show-winning tuner. Now there’s Bryan and the story behind his ’93 Honda Civic Del Sol. In 2010 Bryan traded his rolling chassis Civic sedan for the stock Del Sol and set out to make an 11 second street car. Many thought he was crazy because the Del Sol is actually heavier than the sedan! What? Yup! But determined Bryan ripped out the stock D16 Z6 and had Chase at C.A.R.S.S. rebuild the motor with a bunch of go fast goodies and a turbo. Well the fastest they could get the car to go was 12.0’s. They tried different tune-ups and even cranked up the boost, only to hurt the motor. So they tried again and again and to make a long story short they blew the motor up 4 times! Chase had a B18c sitting at his shop, so they stripped it down to bare block, and sent it to Golden Eagle Manufacturing to get it bored out to 84mm and had it sleeved. Allen DeMattos of Big Island Machine rebuilt the head with Super Tech valves, & valve train and a Skunk2 Pro1 cam. Allen also did a final hone for the Arias 10 to 1 comp pistons, balanced the crank and replaced the stock I beams for H beam Eagle rods with Clevite race bearings. The turbo setup consists of an AFI top mount turbo manifold with T4 flange, Garrett GT3576R turbo, 45mm turbo smart hyper gate wastegate, Turbo Smart blow off valve and an AFI 4 core back door intercooler. Air & fuel are handled by an Edelbrock intake manifold, 70mm Blox throttle body, BDL industries fuel rail, 1600cc injectors, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and A100 fuel pump, nylon braided -8 fuel lines and a 5 gallon fuel cell. Like Liz’s ride Bryan chose a Hondata S300 computer with the addition of a Hondata boost by gear solenoid. ATI harmonic balancer and T1 full race catch pan round it all off. The transmission is a B16, with Quaife Manufacturing limited slip diff, carbon coated syncros, Competition Stage 4 Ironman street/strip clutch with Type R flywheel. Steve Perreira at Street Strip Performance Fabrication, fabricated the 6-point roll cage. And now for the moment of truth. (Insert drum roll here) Rob Gavel of Redline Racing in Hilo popped the Del Sol on the Dyno and he and Chase from C.A.R.S.S. tuned it to 662 HP. And after only a few shake down passes they got this streetcar down the quarter in 11.5 smoking the tires all the way through

the lights! So now the million-dollar question, how do we get it to stick? Stay tuned! Bryan sends a special thanks again to Liz, Alex and his wife and the Visaya boys for the body and paint, Brad Ratliff from Arizona for all the AFI Turbo stuff, Rob from Redline Racing, Chase from C.A.R.S.S. and to David Lasiter, Mike Okumura & Ronnie Guerpo for help putting in the motor and trans in the wee hours of build week. Never say die! ŠD.ACDAL PHOTOGRAPHY

About 10 years ago Tony & Nani Paul of Hilo had a real nice ’32 roadster that was pretty much what Tony had always wanted, but you know how they say, “everything has a price”, and Tony ended up selling his pride and joy. “I still regret selling the roadster” said Tony while he shared his latest ride with us. Over the last 10 years Tony has had a handful of sweet rides including a sweet little 1926 Ford T 2 Door Sedan and a 1934 Ford Pick Up we featured a few years back. But Tony has always had his eyes open for another ’32 Ford so when this little number previously owned by local musician Tosh Kealoha showed up for sale, Tony jumped on it. The fenderless coupe was disassembled with plans to not only up-grade the power plant and drive train, but for a stint with Chucky Lewis of Hilo for a full fender makeover. Bobbed rear fenders and roll pan give it a real clean “finished” look (I myself was never a big fan of the gas tank hanging off the rear of the early Fords). The coupe was originally painted the Coca Cola Red by Eric Gomes of Aftermath Painting, note the painted headliner and door panel inserts. A lot of time went into that custom touch for sure. After fitting the fenders and running boards Chuck sprayed the new pieces to match, then it was back to Tony’s garage for re-assembly with hopes of finishing the coupe by Cruise Paradise 2012. The low compression small block Chevy was the perfect candidate for the Weiand 144 Blower unit. The snout was modified (shortened) to fit the combination of the blower belt driven accessories and radiator. Before the engine was installed Wayne Rabang went to town on all the custom fabricated stainless steel accessories including the firewall and fan shroud. Tony took on the task of sanding and polishing all the custom pieces like the motor mount plates, the trick spark plug wire hangers that sit high over the valve covers rather than the usual looms or hangers that hug the valve covers. Tony tells us he spent about a week just on the firewall. Other stainless goodies under the hood include the wire harness cover and dip stick mount on the mirror finish firewall and a full custom 2.25” stainless exhaust that blows through a pair of Flowmaster double chamber SS mufflers and exit out back through a pair of SS tips hanging off a one-off, you guessed it, Wayne Rabang SS bracket. Wayne also spread his talents throughout the ride with SS hood and trunk hinges and latches, front license plate and blinker brackets and Tony has him working on a few more pieces I’m sure we’ll get to see at the next local show. You’ll know this sweet little ride by all its shiny stainless steel and the FOXY 32 plates! Stay tuned for a feature on a 409 powered 1961 Chevy Impala “Bubble Top” Tony and his dad were just finishing up and gave us a peek at while we were shooting the ‘32. Its another looker to come out of the Mango Tree Alley Garage, Pana’ewa, Hawaii.

VWCruising
Firstly, by way of introduction since this is my first column of many, my name is Sal Acosta. Like most of us born and raised in Hawaii we grew up around Volkswagens. I’ve owned a VW at the tender age of 16. My first Bug was a ’72 Beetle. Back then cruising in a Bug was cool. To this day it is still cool. I took a lengthy break after high school but recently caught the Bug fever. We either driven, owned, tinkered around, or raced one. For some of us we still do it and have passed it on to our son/daughter, which I call generational. Secondly, as we cruise I will attempt to share images, experience, and ultimately ‘tell our story’. For without our story enthusiasts alike would not know that VW is still strong in Hawaii. Hawaii Motorhead Magazine is definitely a great vehicle to share our story. In this column I will cover the recently completed VW Club of Hawaii 11th Annual Shaka Weekend. The VW Club of Hawaii leadership consists of Todd Matsumoto, President; Angie Cariaga, Vice-President; Kevin Myer, Treasurer; and Gordon Ortiz, Jeff Marzo, Geri Salvador, Hannibal Cabacungan, and Sal Acosta. Every Labor Day holiday VW enthusiasts look forward to the biggest VW show in Hawaii. Unlike previous years this Shaka Weekend took place on Sunday and Monday. This particular event is not only locally recognized, but nationally, and internationally. Oceanic Cable’s Island Driver came took some shots and interviewed Mr. Pres., Todd Matsumoto. Naturally, HotVWs Magazine’s RK Smith worked his magic and took pictures for an upcoming article. Sam and Jodi Smith of Sydney, Australia made the trek to cover our ‘Big Kahuna’ for Australia VW Magazine. Day 1 - Hawaii Food Bank Drive Car Show. My Shaka Weekend started at 4:00 am. Brenda and Tiana dragged themselves to our 21-Window Deluxe Bus, some call it a Samba, but I call it the original SUV. Brenda and Tiana fell back to sleep in the Bus. Arrived Ala Moana Beach Park Key Hole aka Figure-8 at ‘zero-dark-thirty’. The original founders of VWCoH, Todd Matsumoto and Angie Cariaga were already there setting up the tent as they have been for the past 10 years. Soon sister club Vintage VW Club of Hawaii’s Randy Wong arrived and lent a hand. Meanwhile, Tulba and Hannibal Cabacungan, and Robin were setting up the entertainment tent. Early birds – Henry Kaluna Kaha, Sr., and Irene LigsayVereze of Waianae in their his-n-her ’69 pink convertible Bug and ’64 little red convertible Ghia arrived ‘zero-darkthirty’. Chris Johnson of Aiea trailered his white ’57 Oval. Ronald Resuella of Pacific Palisades in his light blue Bus also arrived before sunrise. By 7:00 am VWs were lined up to come in through the gate. By 9:00 am 109 VWs were parked and staged. At 10:00 am Gordon Ortiz held his judges briefing to volunteer judges from sister clubs Vintage VW Club of Hawaii, 706 Ewa Beach VW Club, and Ka’a Hui Brada Hood. By 11:00 am the venue had no parking spot to spare; elec-

tric was in the air; bruddahs were checking each other’s ‘kauwila’; Ace Ramirez and Matt Santiago were busily turning their kalbi – ‘pulehu’ style; Jodi Smith, Anthony Nguyen, David Canella, Edge Yuen among others were snapping away and taking pictures. See the official VWCoH site for list of 45 winners. Rick Hare of Waimanlo in his ’65 Kombi earned Best of Show. Look for Rick’s Bus in an upcoming hotVWs Magazine feature. Day 2 – hotVWs Magazine photo shoot. Venue for the shoot was at Hawaii Pacific University –Windward in Kaneohe. We gathered at Moanalua Gardens. Kevin Myer gave his brief, then we made our trek over the H-3. Anthony Nguyen, Scott Penman, and Dave Coulter took rolling/action shots on the H-3. Although Honolulu’s finest gave RK Smith an ‘autograph’ we charged on. Photo shoot drew 76 VWs. After the photo shoot a group departed for an around the island cruise – North Shore bound, another group cruised through God’s Country ‘Nalo’ to Sandy’s Beach then to Waikiki. This Shaka Weekend would not have been a success without VW Club of Hawaii’s sponsors – Tony Group VW, Hawaii Food Bank, Pierside Parts Unlimited, Wolfsburg West, SCAT Enterprises, Island Vee Dub, Aloha Otto, Frito Lays of Hawaii, Hawaii Import Parts, Hawaii Strongest Dog, hot VWs Magazine, Love’s Bakery, Matsumoto’s Okazuya, Meadow Gold, P&E Foods, Screen Designs. The benefactors of this event are the recipients of Hawaii Food Bank. 512 lbs of canned foods / bag rice doubling last year’s donation; and, $977 tripling last year’s donation. And, finally the 109 VW enthusiasts, 76 cruisers, and 1000s of spectators experienced another Shaka Weekend to remember. My Shaka Weekend ended around 10:00 pm on Day 2, Monday.

I am 49 years old, lives in a suburb of Stockholm called Södertälje, I have always changed and rebuilt bicycles, mopeds, boats, cars and motorcycles, has been difficult to have something that everyone else has, I have to put my own style on it.
October 2012 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 23 We have three Harley Davidson in the family now that I have built, the first one is a FXR Trike to my wife, then I built my Sportster chopper that has been published by many magazines in the United States, England, Germany, Spain, France, Austria and Sweden. Last year my wife’s daughter wanted to ride with us, so I built her a Sportster to this season, the only thing she wanted was purple and that there would be a crown somewhere. So that’s how the name “Purple Queen” became. Her name is Janine Nikula and she is 22 years old. She is studying music, singing, drama and dance. She started to ride a bike late last summer and she got her driving license this summer (2012).She is quite “girly” so when I started to build this bike for her, her only wish was that it should be purple and she wanted a crown somewhere on the bike. She has always liked to ride with us and now with her own license and bike, she has been join us on the roads and bike shows a lot. Janine appreciate her bike and thinks it is nice and smooth to drive. “It’s really a nice sidekick from the daily life” My ideas started when I saw Moons Sportster and thought the style was awesome, I had met on internet Andrea Gallinaro from Italy who engraves. I like the 70s style engraving, flake paint and gold. So I made a mix from Sportster bobber and 70s chopper. I started with an original Sportster that I tore down completely. I cut away the rear bracket for the stock fenders and welded new mounts for turn signals, raised the mounting point for gas tank, cut out and reinforced the frame in front to make a cleaner look. Bracket for the ignition switch was moved and welded to the battery box; bracket for the new rear fender was made. Brackets for solo saddle was welded after that the frame was powder coated satin black. The wheels I tore down, hubs powder coated satin black, then I build up the wheels with twisted spokes and brass nipples and Old style tires mounted. The fork I tore down and all the brackets was cut away from the triple trees, then I sent all the parts from the fork and all engine covers to Andrea in Italy for engraving and polishing. Engine is almost untouched, what’s done is engraving on all covers, cylinders are powder coated, special bracket in polished stainless steel with integrated speedometer to the upper engine mount, all bolts have brass covers. Brass point cover from Indian Larry. The handlebar is Biltwells frisco I welded risers for a cleaner look, Internal throttle installed and electricity was drawn to two mini switches, one in the side of the grip for high /low light and horn and the brass mount from Kustom Tech Italy a mini switch for turn lights. All electricity is newly drawn, mini turn signals in front and Kellermann Micro 1000 for the rear, Reg plate was moved down to the left side with a new bracket from powder coated steel and Brass. All parts were left to Daniel on Air brush studio in Stockholm who painted mini flake paint and text, Have tried to find as much brass parts as possible, I think it has been a good combination The exhaust system is made by my friend Kent, Ace Performance and I have rebuilt the mufflers with brass trumpets. Photos and story submitted by Peter Strom Thanks for sharing your ride with us Peter. Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! By the time you read this, September’s event will already have taken place - and the results will be on our website, on our Facebook page and in Hawaii Motorhead”s October issue. But I will tell you about our August 26 event! Once again, rain was the determining factor. And not a friend to those who had to drive in “wet” conditions..The day started out with those ugly grey ominous clouds looming on the horizon. The first heat started out dry and then it go really wet! By the time Heat 2 (my heat - again!) started, the strength of theshowers had weakened, but the track remained slick and slippery. You definitely had to avoid several “water obstacles” that still remained on the course (check pics for my white Miata parting the waters!) By the afternoon; the rain had stopped and the track was reasonably dry. And once again there were our usual “fun runs” at the end of the day to put a smile back on the faces who ran “wet.” So, who was “fast driver” of the day? That would be James Hains in his 1993 Mazda Miata. You’ll see James at the track wearing a huge smile and occasionally limbering up with a few yoga stretches. Not exactly somebody who is a threat or an aggressive driver. But put him behind the wheel and watch out! He drives with focus and laser precision. Well ... most of the time! He actually almost got lost on the coarse the first lap around, but was able to correct at the last minute resulting in a slow time, but not a DNF (Did Not Finish.) But by his fourth lap he had captured 10,000 points and fastest RTP (Racer’s Theoretical Performance) adjusted time - 69.692 ! Brandon Wilk (coarse designer) captured the fastest “raw” time (83.829) but had to settle for second with an RTP time of 70.249. He was closely followed by Michael Oates(70.665) and Roy Whitney (71.961.) The 2012 RTP Points Championship is still undecided. Roy Whitney finally relinquished his hold on top spot. The new leader is Michael Oates with a points total of 58,755 (out of a possible 60,000.) Michael actually won the championship last year - could he do it again? He is followed by Brandon Wilk (58,738) Roy Whitney (58,627) and Margie Oates (56,159) Margie is our fastest wahine, Michael’s co driver AND his wife! Watch out Michael! There are still four (4) races remaining AND your best six times of the season are counted - so anything can happen! Our next race is Sunday, October 28, 2012. So, come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com.We’ll be looking for you! “Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. HARE AND HOUND
The Garden Isle Motorcycle Club held its 58th Annual Labor Day Hare and Hound Race on Saturday, September 1st at Anahola on the Island of Kaua’i. The grueling Hare & Hound is part of the Labor Day motorcycle events that include the motocross portion of the event hosted by the Kaua’i Motorcross Riders Association on both Saturday and Sunday. The GIMC was started under the direction of Larry Andrade and its history stretches back to 1945! The Labor Day festivities are the longest consecutive motorcycle race in American history, according to Bertram Almeida, president of the GIMC. “People from all around the world have attended,” Almeida said. “It is known by many to be one of the hardest motorcycle races in the world.”
October 2012 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 27
It’s also been said that it’s a triumph just to finish the Kaua’i Hare & Hound with only about a quarter of the entries finishing this survival type ride. Many riders also agree that if it weren’t for the high cost of getting yourself and your bike to Kaua’i, participation from around the islands and the world would probably be much higher. Maybe this is one for your bucket list? It happens every Labor Day Weekend! Photos by Keani Andrade, story by Nelson Ray Parker
