Dri ve ‘Em!
His hat said it all “Ya Gotta Drive’Em” as Chucky Lewis pulled up with his latest ride, this beautiful all-steel 1932 Ford Roadster. We featured Chucky’s wild 1932, 5 Window Coupe back in August of 2009 after the 2009 Cruise Paradise event. Chucky tells us he actually started this roadster before the radical 5 window, but stopped the roadster project to finish the coupe for the big event. After Cruise Paradise 2009 Chucky resumed the build on the roadster and showed it off along side his other rides at CP12 this past July. The body is an original ’32 Ford that was just a shell and frame when Chucky stumbled across the rare find. As in the last build, Chucky built the entire car, front to back, top to bottom in his garage at home. Yup! Body, paint, mechanical even the upholstery and the convertible top. cont. pg. 6

Starting with the frame Chucky fabricated and welded in the custom cross members and hung the Ford 9” rear end off a pair of coil overs and a 4-link setup. Up front Chucky used a 4” dropped I beam axel. When he first finished the roadster he had red steel wheels on it for an old school look, but wanted to change things up for CP12 so he bolted up a set of magnesium wheels with the gasser style spindle mounts up front. Chucky replaced the floors, messaged the firewall to except the SBC, added a 1 piece metal hood and hammered out a few dings and dents before blocking out the body and spraying the jet black paint, red ascents and even did the pin striping himself! Those cool taillights are from an old Pontiac. The power plant is a 350 SBC with a 4-speed transmission. Check out all the shell casings that carry through out the build. The dipstick is a 50 caliper round while 30-caliper rounds dress up the valve cover bolts. Chucky was not sure how big the round used for the radiator overflow tank is, but it sure looks like something you’d fire out of a

tank! Chucky used the primer end of 30 caliper casings to plug up the holes on the top edge of the doors where snaps were once used for the roadster top, and the door lock pulls are also a 30 caliper casing. The shifter handle also got the ammunition touch with a custom made piece and the knife is Chucky’s reverse lock out….cool! The trips and the vintage Edelbrock valve covers keep with the old school theme, as do the Sanderson headers. The windshield was chopped 2 ½” and Chucky built the bows for the top as well as sewing up the canvas. Chucky kept the sewing machine humming along as he cut down the Dodge Caravan seat and covered it all in red leather. Believe it or not, as nice as this little roadster is, Chucky drives it just about everyday. As his cap says “You Gotta Drive ‘Em!”

Kalaeloa Raceway Park held The First Annual “West Oahu Summer Festival” at KRP with an event that really had some-
thing for everyone. The all-day affair on Saturday, August 18th featured a car show and competition, chili & BBQ ribs cook-off, a bikini contest, wet t-shirt contest, a bikini car wash, men’s belly flop contest, burnout competition, truck tug-o-war, rock crawling, RC drifting and a lowrider hop-off! There was also live entertainment and choke ono food! As I said, something for everyone! The event raised funds for the parks improvements and expansion. And excitement is building everyday with more and more events on tap like the 1st weekend of Sand Drags at KRP this Labor Day weekend! Bracket racing on Saturday night and Heads-Up Eliminations on Sunday! The stock car guys also have something to be excited about with the announcement of the first free practice on Sunday October 21st. Dane Tanabe of Hilo takes his hobby seriously. He’s not in it to compete with anyone but says “if your gonna do something, do it right!”
You see, Dane’s probably had more than his fare share of cool rides. Tuners, trucks and street bikes, many show winners as well, but tells us this is his “best build so far”. And it’s not even finished. Dane acquired the ’92 Honda Civic SI a little over 3 years ago. He liked the style of the ’92 being the 1st year of this body style. At the end of 2011, and about 9 months away from another Super Car Show, Dane decided it was time for a facelift. The Civic was disassembled down to a bare shell and with credit card in hand, Dane went to town ordering all the OEM and JDM parts. Believe me there is not one screw on this ride from eBay. The body is stock with the exception of the hard to find Mugen front lip and the even harder to find Spoon Carbon Fiber Duck Bill rear wing. Xave Saito (can you have a cooler name than Xave) prepped the body and expertly sprayed the PPG Black. Dane began the re-assembly starting with the Buddy Club racing damper full coil over suspension. Fully polished Function7 lower control arms and rear sub frame brace improve the handling and steering while a Mugen front tower strut keeps things tight up front. Acura GSR disc brakes front and rear allow this tuner to “stop on a dime” say’s Dane. The wheels are also the real deal. Super rare (and very pricey) Mugen M7’s. Fully polished 15x6.5”, 4x100 bolt pattern with off sized special order Yokohama S Drive 195-45-15’s. The Honda SI motor was swapped out for a JDM GSR, B18 C1 motor and trans. DC Sport headers help the power plant breathe, while a Koyo Racing radiator keep it cool. The Mugen valve cover was powder coated by Danes buddy J-Boy at J-Boy’s Powder Coating. Other than that the GSR motor is stock but plenty fast for the small ride, at least for now. But after talking with Dane I don’t think that’s going to last too long. The interior got a handful of upgrades as well with GSR leather back seats, Bride front racing seats, JDM EG6 – SIR gauge cluster and a detachable Momo steering wheel with a $450 Type R NSX horn button! Yup! A $450 horn button! Another rare item and one most guys wouldn’t spend that kinda money on. I know I’d have a hard time with that one. All of Dane’s work paid off as he added another 1st place trophy to his collection with a win in the Foreign Sports class at the Auto Value Super Car Show this past July and wanted to thank a few friends for their role including Ryan Gota, Shane Nakamichi, Randy Nakashima, Bryson Nakamura, Mark K-Aloha and Malcolm Mederios of Triple XXX Towing. Word has it there’s a big Import event coming to the Big Island in October, and I’ll bet the farm that you’ll see Dane Tanabe in the mix!

Ladies Night
At Kaua’i Raceway Park!
It was Ladies Night at Kaua‘i Raceway Park on Saturday, August 4, 2012. PS&D Napa Auto Parts has been a loyal sponsor for over fifteen years to the Garden Isle Racing Association (GIRA) and its mission to keep racing off the streets and on the strip. Napa gave away over sixty admission tickets—treating the ladies to a night out at the track! In keeping with the theme of giving, GIRA donated one dollar from every paid entry to the YWCA Women’s Shelter. For the event, a special ladies race class was created and eleven women entered the competition. It was quite a spectacle to witness an unusual coordination of tag-team racing as many couples and family members literally raced to the hot pit, lapping cars to accommodate the other race member—or for some gals, competing in dual classes. Top honors went to Helen Uemura (Ladies Class) and husband, Ricky Uemura (Sport Compact). My Loew (Ladies Class) and husband, Chris Loew (Pro ET), also took home matching trophies placing second in their respective classes. Garden Isle Racing Association (GIRA) is a non-profit organization, with an all-volunteer board and over 100 members. The association holds monthly familyoriented drag race events at Kaua‘i Raceway Park to promote safe motorsports and safe driving on public roads. Next event is the Jr. Dragster Challenge on September 1 & 2, 2012. For more information, visit www.dragrace-kauai.com or call Bobby Barros, GIRA president at 635-6034.

Tracka
22 | Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | September 2012
The initials B.F. stand for Backyard Fabrication! It also stands for the owner and builder Brian Frasco of Hilo. A true home built bike dubbed “Tracka” got it’s inspiration from Brian’s brother Jason who was buggin’ Brian to build a skinny tire bike, kind of like the old Café Racers or Tracker bikes. Brian had the 21” Ultima Kool Kat wheel that he dusted off thinking it would be a Kool start. Unfortunately he found out the wheels were discontinued, fortunately, Brian found a 19” Kool Kat front wheel on eBay. So he

September 2012it.| And Hawaii Motorhead Magazine | 23 drilled out the hub of the front wheel to mount the sproter or sprokster, you decide what you wanna call Viola! Tracka had some cool ass skinny wheels front and back. The frame is a Kraft Tech ridged with a DNA 4” under stock springer front end. Note the flipped handlebars like the old Café Racers. The solo seat is also remnant of the Café Racers of old. Brian fabricated the fender struts for the skinny front fender that now resides in the rear and modified the oil bag that sports the year of the old Shovel Head. Brian built the 80 cube stroker a bunch of years back for a friend and when opportunity presented itself, Brian bought it back. The trans is one of Ultima’s new 6 speed units with both electric and kick-start. Brian tells us the first bike he learned to ride was one of Carl Kekela’s bikes that was a jockey shift, so all of his bikes since then have been set up with Jockey shifters. The shifter ball is from a Mac truck. Brian also did the paint using a 2007 Peach Orange Pearl with white panels to keep the Old Skool theme while Greg Kobayashi gets the nod for the graphics and gold leaf. Brian thanks Dorilee and their daughter Brilee (the cutie in the picture) and also their parents and brother Jason for all their support. Brian says the bike rides real nice and is definitely no trailer queen as he rides it every chance he gets. In fact, watch for Brian this Labor Day weekend, “Tracka” is on the move!

Aloha racers and fellow car enthusiasts! By the time you read this, summer will have drawn to a close. And our August 26 event will have already have been run. I’ll have to tell you all about it in the next issue (deadlines.) But I can tell you all about our July 29 race. Rain. The great equalizer! It doesn’t matter how fast you & your ride are - rain will make you slower! And those drivers who are usually slower than you, are now faster than you - especially when their runs are in the dry! The day started out with those ugly grey ominous clouds looming on the horizon that we all know too well at the track in Hilo. But ...it wasn’t raining ... yet. The first heat started out dry. The drivers getfour timed runs. During their first run, one driver commented: “I had better make this one count!” And then it got wet ... really wet! Everyone’s first lap in Heat 1 was the fastest - which is never the case. And by the time Heat 2 (my heat!) started, the strength of the showers had weakened, but the damage had already been done. No record breaking times today! It would be challenging enough just to stay on the slick asphalt at any speed. But, by the afternoon; the rain had stopped and the track was reasonably dry. And times were respectable, if you avoided several “water obstacles” that still remained on the course. And there were our usual “fun runs” at the end of the day to put a smile back on the faces of the “slow” & damp morning drivers. So, who was “fast driver” of the day? That would be Michael Oates, in his 1990 Mazda Miata, who captured another 10,000 points towards the RTP Championship Series. He was closely followed by Brandon Wilk, Roy Whitney and Luke McKay. And to date, Roy Whitney (aka The Miniac) is still holding on to his lead in RTP points with Michael Oates & Brandon Wilk close behind, waiting for Roy to make any mistakes. And mahalo to Kevin Kadaoka (Subaru BRZ) and Bill Golisch (Scion FR-S) for letting us “grownup” kids drool all over your new rides! Our next race is Sunday, September 30, 2012. So, come out & see us (spectators free!) or better yet, sign up to drive. Check us out on Facebook, www.bigislandscca.org or sign up at www.motorsportreg.com. We’ll be looking for you! “Keepin’ it off the streets and takin’ it to the track,” F. Brian Dorr, Regional Executive Big Island of Hawaii Region Sports Car Club of America

LAS VEGAS Formula DRIFT Slides into Sin City The world famous Las Vegas Motor Speedway played host to Formula DRIFT – Round 6 – After Dark. The “Diamond in the Desert” is just outside the Vegas Strip and has hosted events such as NASCAR, IndyCar, NHRA and more recently Formula DRIFT. The custom built course is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, drifting circuits in the world. With a very high-speed triple entry, drivers are pushed to put their fears behind them and risk it all when entering the first turn. cont. pg. 28

LAS VEGAS And, DRIFT fans got their money’s worth with each grandstand seat having a great view of all the action. 32 cars made it to the Knockout rounds and when the sun started to set, After Dark was on! The fast course claimed more than a few rides with several drivers putting their cars into the K-Rails and walls. Enough cars did survive the knockout rounds to advance to the Top 16. After the cars and drivers were lined up the national anthem was sung, followed by an awesome fireworks display and then the battle rounds begun.

The win in the final battle went to Rhys “Mad Skills” Millen, #67 of New Zealand in his 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe beating Fredric “The Champkiller” Aasbo, #151 of Norway in his 2011 Team Need For Speed Scion tC. This gives Millin back-to-back wins after he set the Pike’s Peak world record only a week before Vegas. In the consolation battle for 3rd, the iconic Vaughn Gittin, #25 of the U.S. and the current overall Formula DRIFT points leader and Triple Crown leader driving his 2013 Monster Energy - Falken Tire Ford Mustang beat out Japans Robbie Nishida, #31 in his 1993 Bridges Racing, Achilles Radial Lexus SC300. In June we brought you part 1 of our 4 part series, ’32 Delivery. A 1932 Ford Delivery truck that SKG Auto Body Inc. of Kona was commissioned to restore for an Oahu company wanting to use it as a rolling billboard as they delivered their goods on Oahu’s busy streets. Here in part 3, the rebuilt and reskinned doors, running boards, fenders and hood are blocked out and painted as well as the shell of the body. The beige color looks amazing, the panels are laser straight and the finish is better than new! And all that cool woodwork has the final fit and finish. All sanded smooth, cleared and mounted. Damn that looks good. The glass is installed and all 8 doors are hung.
