Aloha! The last 11 years have been challenging times for the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) Hawaii chapter. During our early years as an organization, we were known as the Light Gauge Steel Engineers Association (LGSEA) Hawaii chapter. The goal of this chapter was to disseminate the latest cold-formed steel design information to all structural engineers in the state. It was about two years ago that we took another name to better describe our mission. From a group of 12 existing CFSEI members located in the state of Hawaii, the CFSEI Hawaii chapter has grown to almost 50 architects and engineers engaged in the design of CFS structures. In the past years, the Institute achieved the following for our membership: • formed a Young Engineer Education Committee, adding a cold-formed steel design introduction to the civil engineering curriculum at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and tied it together with jobsite visits and touring a roll-forming facility; • created the Field Problems Adhoc Committee to report constructability issues with specific design details, which are presented to a panel of engineers and contractors to determine alternatives to reduce costs and improve efficiency; • maintained a library of cold-formed steel reference books, manuals and catalogs; • served on the BIA (Building Industry Association of Hawaii) Hawaii’s BuiltGreen Hawaii Steering Committee to ensure proper consideration of cold-formed steel as a framing material for green built houses; and • had all four Hawaii counties adopt the AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) Specifications and Standards recognized in the IBC (International Building Code) 2003 prior to the official adoption of the IBC Code. This will ensure that best design practices for cold-formed steel will be followed and enforced. We are keen on continuously providing continuing education programs as well as updated information on cold-formed steel framing to engineers and design professionals. This year, we are currently preparing a number of potential topics for our meetings. Among these are fire/sound acoustic systems and advancements, track-to-stud gap research, mid-rise structures combined with non cold-formed steel (CFS) lateral systems, truss presentation and product standards and span tables in conjunction with the SSMA’s (Steel Stud Manufacturers Association) new catalog. CFSEI Hawaii has been fortunate to have the support and dedication of our board of directors, the Steel Framing Alliance and the Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance, corporate sponsors and volunteers over the past years. They all deserve to be recognized for their commitment, generous contributions and leadership. Join us as we continue to provide a strong environment for educating the design and construction community on cold-formed steel framing. Mahalo,

Brian Enomoto President CFSEI-Hawaii Chapter

Aloha and welcome to the 2007/2008 edition of the Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance (HPSFA) Resource Directory. Responsible management of Hawaii’s resources, energy and materials is more prevalent today than ever before. In Hawaii’s construction industry, cold-formed steel framing meets these objectives. Steel is the most recycled material in the construction industry. Cold-formed steel reduces consumption of fossil fuels with manufacturing locations closer to Hawaii jobsites, and cold-formed steel manufacturing reduces the amount of construction material at the jobsite. The HPSFA is here to provide resources, education, innovations and support to further the use of cold-formed steel construction. This resource guide is a valuable reference on how to get started in cold-formed steel framing and sustain its use for residential and commercial construction projects. First published in 1998, this guide has become a keystone of information on cold-formed steel framing and showcases our membership and their services. 2006 was a challenging year for the Alliance. We renewed our commitment to create value for our industry partners and members by partnering with the newly-organized Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute – Hawaii chapter. Among the major developers and builders, steel remains the preferred building material from walls to floors, and its use in roof trusses continues to grow. Steel occupies this position because of its versatility, its strength, its cost-effectiveness and its recyclability. Our members consistently participate in our programs, learn from and conduct our training sessions and attend meetings to further their knowledge of the industry. We thank them for their generous support in these activities, in particular for their participation in the 2007 Pacific Rim Steel Framing Conference to make this biannual event an overwhelming success. With a new program and leadership team in place for 2007/2008, we are working hard to sustain HPSFA as an organization to be proud of. Through the dissemination of proper information, facilitation of training and education, sponsorship of research and testing, coordination of the sharing of ideas and methods, and participation in trade shows, the HPSFA helps its membership advance to the forefront of home building in the Pacific Rim. The HPSFA stands as a stronger and more focused organization and is poised to help grow your business in 2007 and beyond. As we celebrate our 10th year anniversary, let us all together help open up new opportunities and drive growth with steel framing. Mahalo!

Akira Usami President Aloha! Congratulations to the Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance (HPSFA) for publishing another edition of the Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Resource Directory. This is a valuable tool for consumers and building industry professionals alike looking to build a home using cold-formed steel framing. It is also a great example to all of us in North America, presenting a comprehensive guidebook that acts as a one-stop shopping source for residential steel framing. The Steel Framing Alliance (SFA) exists to develop a market environment in which growth in the use of residential steel framing can be rapidly accelerated. HPSFA plays a key role in this effort by bringing together companies to achieve common goals and increase market potential. This is an exciting time to be in the steel framing industry. New organizations and industries are coming together to bring additional resources to the table for expanding this market. With the huge potential for growth in steel-framed housing, the time is right to aggressively expand its use. With the help of alliances across the country, the network of suppliers and contractors will be provided to achieve these goals. Patronize the members of the HPSFA found in this resource guide. If you have been sitting on the fence, I encourage you to get involved. Mahalo,

Advancing Steel with its Attributes • HSA promoted “Sustainably Green Steel-Framed Homes” at Pacific Building Trade Expo Several company members came together to show their support for “Sustainably Green Steel-Framed Homes,” which was a theme promoted at the AIA/CSI (American Institute of Architects and Construction Specifications Institute) Pacific Building Trade Expo. The Alliance helps to reinforce steel’s positive environmental messages and cost effectiveness, including its recycled content, from start to finish of a project — and beyond.

2006 was a good year for construction, and its activities continued to increase in 2007. Here are highlights of our activities of the year marking the HPSFA 10th anniversary:

• General Membership Meeting: 2006 Holiday Cocktail Party, Dave & Buster’s The members of the HPSFA celebrated the success of 2006 at Dave & Buster’s in Ward Entertainment Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. This fun-filled gathering was highlighted by team building play-offs, and members and guests had a chance to play through a series of games and enjoy the night with cocktails and prizes from games, drawings and a Dave & Buster’s games gave everyone a chance 50/50 raffle. to loosen up and enjoy the evening.

• HPSFA at the BIA Home Building & Remodeling Show HPSFA recently participated in the 13th BIA (Building Industry Association of Hawaii) Home Building & Remodeling Show at Neal Blaisdell Center exhibition hall in Honolulu, Hawaii. Member volunteers constructed a 10foot by 18-foot steel-framed booth highlighting the many advantages of steel framing. We wish to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who donated products, time and efforts for making our promotion possible.

• Support Scholars for Steel In 2003, the HPSFA established an annual scholarship fund through the University of Hawaii Foundation to assist graduate students in the College of Engineering of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The recipients must be enrolled full-time in the graduate program with an emphasis in structural engineering. Candidates are selected by a committee including a representative of the ColdFormed Steel Engineers Institute - Hawaii Chapter.

HPSFA’s booth tangibly illustrated the benefits of steel framing.

• Fifth Steelman Competition At the fifth Steelman Competition (also a part of the BIA event mentioned above), each of the three competitors had to build a 10-foot by 8-foot storage module. The participants (and their modules) were judged on speed, quality of work, adherence to design specifications and appearance. Behind each framer is the support and motivation of his employer. Sponsored annually by the HPSFA, the competition gives steel framers an opportunity to publicly demonstrate their knowledge and speed in the discipline of steel framing. | 8 | 2007 Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance Resource Directory

HPSFA Celebrates 10 Years of Growth and Accomplishments The Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance has made great strides in fulfilling its purpose of stimulating the use of cold-formed steel framing as the enduring building medium. In 10 short years, it has exemplified what an alliance can do when competitors come together with common goals to increase market potential. As we celebrate our years of growth, we have looked back and examined the accomplishments of the HPSFA for the first 10 years of its existence. Today, we benefit from its successes.

Information Resource/ Education Before its formal launching at the Washington Place in 1997, few individuals believed in the huge benefits of steel framing for Hawaii homeowners. Since then, the HPSFA has stayed on track to achieve its goal of becoming a vital steel framing resource for designers, managers, estimators, suppliers and contractors. The HPSFA has assisted the national alliance in establishing important elements such as building codes and standards, prescriptive building methods, tools and software to enable the homebuilding market for steel. As the stage is set, HPSFA has been engaging everyone involved in, or affected by, the building industry through various programs.

tools developed by the national alliance where they are needed the most. The result has been a long list of educational programs offered throughout the islands, acceptance of most building departments of prescriptive design, the successful PACRIM conferences and several dozen networking events and member meetings that have facilitated the spread of news and information about steel framing. In its early years, the HPSFA also distributed the green binders – a product catalog and standards manual on steel framing, which has become the main reference among industry players. For nine years, it is responsible for the production of an annual resource guide in partnership with Trade Publishing which provides the latest updates in steel framing technology and services, past activities and list of members. Please patronize the HPSFA members listed in this guide as they are knowledgeable and experienced in offering products and services for any construction project.

the HPSFA consistently provides members more benefits including enjoying all the new resources and publications that come from the national association. The creation of the Big Island Chapter proves this. With the integration of the ColdFormed Steel Engineers Institute with the national and local alliance, we expect our membership to increase in great number.

Public Awareness/ Promotion The HPSFA continues to educate consumer and industry players on benefits of steel. The HPSFA has reinforced its consumer thrust by participating in various trade shows and placing advertisements on the attributes of steel framing. It continues to strengthen its presence in any public activities, even winning awards as “Best All Around” on booth decorations, and hosting the “Steelman Competition” for five straight years. Year after year, residential steel framing has greatly benefited the housing industry here in Hawaii. Homeowners, more than ever, have been asking the benefits and cost-effectiveness of a steel-framed home for both new construction and remodeling. Every year’s responses have been tremendously overwhelming. The HPSFA has engaged its members in discussions, nationally and locally, covering topics that ultimately grow the building community’s use of steel framing systems. We look forward to offering more new ways to engage all players in the building industry to the future of construction – steel framing.

Market Share Since its inception, the HPSFA faithfully disseminates the latest design information to all building industry players in the state of Hawaii. This was very important in the late ‘90s as about 25 percent of all new construction was being framed with cold-formed steel. The HPSFA worked together with developers and builders in advancing steel framing in the trades. In a few short years, the HPSFA members have increased the steel framing market in the state. In 2006, 70 to 75 percent of new homes

on Oahu are now framed in steel. Today, Hawaii has become the undisputed worldwide leader in the percentage of homes framed with steel. As new players are coming together to bring additional resources to the table for expanding this market, the HPSFA moves forward as a vital force in the Pacific Rim.

intelligent workforce with a high degree of qualifications. The rapid change in technology requires lifelong learning and retraining. To realize this, the HPSFA has conducted several valuable training program geared at helping contractors frame with steel and also building officials who inspect houses framed with steel. The HPSFA consistently aims at encouraging the adoption of standardized building codes that will ensure that the reconstruction will be done according to modern construction standards using higher quality, more durable framing materials. Presently the HPSFA has become a model alliance for the country as the industry strives to continually develop regional efforts to further develop residential and commercial steel framing nationwide. We are proud to have led efforts that developed programs, provided training, promoted networking opportunities and published information that helped realize the many advantages in the use of steel for construction. It is with certainty that we will again look back at these accomplishments as we handle the challenges and changes we will face in the next years. We hope

degraded in the recycling process, steel can be recycled over and over again without ever losing quality.

How to LEED™ with Steel • Go to the U.S. Green Building Council web site, www. usgbc.org to learn about the LEED™ Green Building Rating System • Go to the Steel Recycling Institute web site, www.recycle-steel.org for information on how to earn steel recycled content credit

What About Fire? • Steel-framed houses are fire resistant. • Studs, joists and rafters do not add fuel to a fire. • One-third of all fires start in the wall cavity. • Steel-framed houses do not melt in a fire. Framing members can resist up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. • Actual case studies show steel houses perform very well in house fires, with little or no damage to the framing structure. • Houses framed entirely of steel can qualify for lower insurance rates.

STEEL: An Environmentally-friendly Material

STEEL: The Material of Choice • Cold-formed steel is a recycled material that typically comes from a mill in coils. • Steel is roll-formed into precise, uniform shapes with exacting tolerances. • Steel does not shrink or expand when subjected to moisture changes caused by preservative treatments, rain or fluctuations in humidity. • The sections are straight and do not require sorting or special handling to ensure for crown. • Steel provides excellent quality for the builders and homeowners.

STEEL: The Most Recycled Material in the World • Steel is the most recycled product in the world. It is a LEED™-certified product based on its virtually 100 percent recycled steel content. Adding coldformed steel to your project may add as many as two points towards a LEED™ certification. • A steel-framed house may contain the equivalent of seven scrapped automobiles. • Industrywide, the overall recycling rate for steel is 77 percent — higher than paper, plastic and glass. And while most other materials are | 12 | 2007 Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance Resource Directory

• Steel is North America’s No. 1 recycled material. Each year, more steel is recycled than aluminum, paper, glass and plastic combined! • Scrap has become the steel industry’s single largest source of raw material, because it is economically advantageous to recycle old steel into new steel. In light of this, steelmaking furnaces have been designed to consume steel scrap. In fact, in the past 50 years, approximately 50 percent of the steel produced in this country has been recycled through the steelmaking process. • The average landfill consists of approximately 60 percent construction debris, mostly concrete, wood and plastic. Builders can reduce their disposal costs and divert material from local landfills. • Less than 6 percent of landfill is steel, such as staples, nails in wood and steel rebar inside concrete chunks. • Seventy-six million tons of steel scrap was recycled in 2005. • Every ton of steel recycled conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. • Debris from a steel-framed house accounts for only 2 cubic feet of landfill waste compared to 50 cubic feet from a typical wood-framed home. • It takes seven old cars to produce enough steel to frame a basic residential dwelling.

Termite Facts • There are over 1,900 species of termites in the world. The most commonly found termites in Hawaii are the

Drywood and Formosan Subterranean. • A well-fed Formosan queen can live for 20 years and lay 2,000 eggs a day. • Each nest has three kinds of termites: reproducers, workers and soldiers. • The winged termites are in the reproductive stage of the termite. Termites swarm to find a mate and form new nests usually from March to June.

Termite Prevention: • In Hawaii, termites are a major concern. About $100 million is spent in Hawaii each year for prevention, control and repair. With steel framing, you do not have to worry about insecticides or other treatments. This is a sure guarantee of 50 years minimum. • The best time to protect against termites is during the planning and construction phase. Steel framing provides a termite-proof solution for the structural integrity of your home. • With steel, you will avoid expensive tenting costs and annual treatments.

What About Rust? • In order for galvanized steel to rust, there must be water present. If there is no water, there will be no rust. • Steel framing members in wall cavities, attic spaces or crawl spaces not exposed to water will last over 100 years. • Forensic studies recently conducted on Oahu residences built over 30 and 40 years ago showed steel wall studs with no visible signs of corrosion except in areas with plumbing leaks. • Zinc coating protects steel by providing a physical barrier as well as cathodic protection to the underlying steel. When the base steel is exposed, such as at a cut or scratch, the steel is cathodically protected by the sacrificial corrosion of the zinc coating adjacent to the steel. • “No Water = No Rust”

What About Lightning? • Steel-framed houses do not attract lightning strikes. • In the event of a strike, the steel frame offers occupants more protection with several ground paths. • The steel frame reduces the likelihood of explosions, secondary fires or personal injury. • Steel skyscrapers in Honolulu have provided occupants with safe offices and residences for years.

Earthquakes or Hurricanes? • Yes! A steel-framed home can be engineered for the highest seismic rating given by code. • Steel’s strength and resiliency help it to survive the strongest earthquakes. • A steel-framed home can be engineered for the highest wind loads given by code. • Steel has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any framing material.

• For generations we have relied on the strength and durability of steel in our commercial buildings, hospitals and schools.

How Easy is it to Remodel my Home? • Steel framing can be used for additions and renovations to existing wood houses, especially those with termite damage. • Screwed connections make it easy to move walls and for other renovations in the future.

Breathe Easier • The Healthy House Institute recommends steel framing for good indoor air quality. • Chemically sensitive homeowners and those susceptible to asthma are exposed to fewer chemicals in steelframed homes. • Steel resists mold spores that can lead to chronic illness. • Steel framing materials can replace others that may contain hazardous materials. • The American Lung Association encourages the use of steel framing with its Health House program.

STEEL: Strong and Straight • Steel framing has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any building material. • It does not rot, warp, split, crack or creep. • Steel does not expand or contract with moisture content. • Using steel framing virtually eliminates nail pops and drywall cracking.

Advantages of Steel • Steel provides the possibility for large spans and open spaces. • Steel harmonizes with all materials • Ease of handling and transportation • Ease of fabrication and mass production • Engineering not required for common residential houses (Prescriptive method, 2000/2003 IRC) • Not only are steel panels light in weight and easy to handle, they also are cheaper to ship and convenient to store. Many manufacturers offer valuable training and support in both design and installation. • Steel framing offers a higher thermal performance, dissipating heat quickly in warm climates, like Hawaii. Moreover, steel framing works well with all types of insulation; whatever thicknesses are optimum for the design. • Steel will not burn, making it ideal for applications in areas that are prone to wildfires. In addition, steel’s fire resistance can help slow the spread of fire within a building too. Insurance ratings for builders and homeowners are significantly less because steel is noncombustible.
