ANDY CHEESE
Born in Odstock, Hampshire, Andy Cheese graduated from Ravensbourne College of Art with a BA in Sculpture. On realising that he still knew so little about his chosen specialism, he took matters into his own hands, ringing round all the artists in the yellow pages to ask if he could work for them. Sculptor and exPresident of the Royal Society of British Sculptors John Ravera generously responded by giving him the chance learn as an apprentice. Spending several years working for two internationally renowned sculpture studios (Derek Freeborn and Edward Lawrence Associates) introduced him to a wider range of artistic styles, developing and strengthening his own technique. In the workshop of Philip Jackson F.R.B.S., Cheese had the opportunity to work on various large scale projects from around the world, including the scaling up of three life size sculptures in clay.
The use of unexpected surfaces for his subjects is engaging, and combined with the artist’s detailed studies into movement give the works personality. Taking a figure as his starting point, he plays with the idea of revealing undercurrents of energy inherent within the static. His detailed studies into the movement of everything from dancers to kinetic machines, have led him to produce iconic sculptures such as ‘Breaking Through The Wall Of Words’, a dynamic bronze portrait cast from old printing press letters. On his art pieces the artist comments: I use a broad range of materials, including stone, resin, wood, steel and plaster. Most of my pieces are based around the human figure, or drawn from nature. These are subjects I find intensely interesting, as the varieties of form and texture are infinite. I often use the suggestion of movement in my work, as I feel that this gives the sculpture more 'life' and helps to engage the viewer. I have studied the movement of everything from dancers to kinetic machines, and used them to give me inspiration. Movement Bronze, polyhant stone edition of 8, 76 x 70 x 37 cm
