Graham High
Graham High ARTIST’S STATEMENT These paintings try to deconstruct the complexities of seeing and feeling while taking their key note from a very specific landscape, the moods and appearances of the North Norfolk coast and the North Sea. Passages of paint suggest at times flourishes of naturalism where the mix and flow of pigment mimics natural manifestations, the splash of the sea, the weather and the changes of light, the solid and the misty, the encroachments of rust and salt water. The process of making marks and laying down colours mimics the natural processes of weather erosion, geological accretion, deformation and creation. My work is about perception and also how we experience that perception. Feelings about the landscape and inner responses prompted by the natural environment result in a superimposition of elements not easily combined, modes of painterly language which do not find a straightforward syntax but which, combine to make a painting which enacts experience. The act of painting brings to plastic form the vertiginous reality of sensation whilst embodying the on‐going awareness of its modes of representation.
