Carlo Mirabasso

Carlo Mirabasso began painting his first metaphysical compositions in the early 90’s, perfecting an original style in oil on wood. His landscapes are typically heaped with pointed roofs, bell towers and leaping arches, all in neat vertical rows that sweep the eye upwards. Mathematical building blocks are reminiscent of children’s toys- the pink, orange and blue shapes are faded like the plastic of buckets and spades left out in the sun. Lighthouses and beach balls give an air of beachy nostalgia, but here the plasticine clouds and iron moons are too dense for the translucent skies; they drop down amongst the cypress trees leaving heavy shadows behind. Born in Italy in 1959, Mirabasso now lives and works in the medieval village setting of Bettona. His stylishly executed paintings are influenced by this enchanting Umbrian landscape. As the only region without a coastline or common border, Umbria takes its name from the ‘Umbr’ tribe who claimed to be the most ancient Italian race as a result of surviving the Greek deluge. Mirabasso’s work combines this renaissance backdrop with his modern technique, telling a beautifully strange story that adds to the mythology of his home town. Mirabasso’s impossible perspectives show abandoned lands where weighty planets sink down silently like blimps and light appears to radiate up from the ground. His weirdly symmetrical moonscapes are like empty stage sets where nobody lives, where boats, eggs and newspaper hats are randomly discovered. Perhaps these are places at the very end of the world, or where the lost things go.
