NIKOLAI SILIS
Nikolai Silis (06/06/1928–13/11/2018) was born in Moscow, Russia, USSR as Rufim Andreevich Silis, grew up in Leningrad and in 1941 faced the war there. In 1945 he entered the Moscow Higher Art and Industry School (the former Stroganovskoe) the department of monumental sculpture. Nikolai Silis was a Russian artist, draftsman and sculptor, and an influential voice in twentieth century Russian art. He was the youngest in creative group "LeSS" (1954-1968) , where are along with him was part of Vadim Sidur (1924-1986) and Vladimir Lemport (1922-2001). The group name was made of the first letters of the names of participants.
Nikolai never named his sculptures, unless he had to, paying a tribute of tradition. Sometimes he did it if it was necessary somehow to define his work. He qualified a viewer to do this. He considered a viewer as a co-author in some way, and he thought that a viewer needed some freedom of associations of ideas.
