COMMUNITY Denver’s Old House Society

D enver’s Old House Society is a new nonprofit dedicated to educating owners of old (50+) houses and helping them protect their neighborhoods. They work with local groups and neighborhoods.

They do fun and educational events, such as guided walking tours, workshops on Saturday mornings, dinners in old houses, and all-day fairs with lots of presentations and exhibitors. They do serious business, too, by bringing attention to houses scheduled for demolition, neighborhoods trying to protect themselves from development, and information about Denver’s new zoning code, Blueprint Denver. They offer lots of resources and reference material, and a section on old-houses for sale. Volunteer opportunities are available. They recognize all volunteer efforts and present awards to those who have done an exceptional job in educating home owners, protecting neighborhoods and a grand award for an extraordinary job in elevating the perception and preservation of old houses and neighborhoods.

The autumn “Old House Fair”, Saturday, September 12, 4 p.m. If you join them as a member, your membership gift supports “The Old House Fair” – plus workshops, neighborhood tours and practical information – uniting brand new owners of old houses and veterans who’ve worked for years on their old house or a whole neighborhood. The autumn “Old House Fair” is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, on Denver’s Lowry Campus at the Stanley British Primary School, 350 Quebec Street,

from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per person, payable at the door or fill out the on-line Old House Society Fair Form available at www.denversoldhousesociety.com. The Fair offers 12 workshops on subjects pertinent to old-house owners, exhibits of numerous companies and organizations with products or services for homes build over 50 years ago, and tours of the school, which for many years was open only to Air Force officers and their families. Exhibitors have been requested to provide free 15-minute consultations. Six energy efficiency workshops on topics relatable for old houses, called the green track, will be offered. The other six workshops will present information pertinent to old houses. Topics covered in the green track include: • photovoltaic solar panels • heating an old house and energy efficiency • restoring and maintaining old windows • effective use of water and conservation rebates • caring for old trees • sewers, plumbing and waste water Subjects covered in the other track include: • bricks, mortar and masonry • architectural styles • sensitive additions • updating kitchens with the look of yesteryear • saving wood floors • stained and leaded glass windows Food will be available for sale throughout the day. It will be provided by the school’s students and parents, who are raising money for a trip to London.

Do you have a favorite old house? Would you like to give some recognition to people who have lovingly maintained their beloved old Denver house over the years. Perhaps, you would like to recognize homeowners who have reversed years of neglect to an old house and restored it so that it is now a wonderful asset to the neighborhood. Well, now you can. Nominate your favorite by filling out the Denver’s Old House Society’s Old House nomination form available atwww.denversoldhousesociety.com. Winners will be announced in January at the annual awards reception and dinner. Check out the current nominations on their website:

REAL

Good News For Home Ownership

M ost home owners have taken a hit to their home equity over the past couple of years. Many wonder if it is a smart financial decision to own a home. “Good News” A recent analysis of Federal Reserve data by the National Association of Realtors® shows the answer is a resounding “yes”. In comparison, home owners have a much greater household wealth than renters. In fact, homeowners’ wealth exceeds that of renters by a factor of 50-to-1. The main difference is home equity. Except for a handful of struggling markets in the Midwest, there is no doom and gloom. In all 150 markets tracked by the National Association of Realtors®, including hard-hit markets, households who have owned their home for ten, fifteen, and twenty years have uniformly enjoyed strong equity gains despite the recent downturn.

The data clearly shows that home ownership remains the wisest investment for the typical household!
